rather_o take_v it_o thus_o and_o however_o it_o be_v that_o with_o particular_a circumstance_n be_v not_o to_o be_v too_o much_o strain_v when_o we_o have_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o parable_n yet_o remember_v that_o this_o we_o be_v now_o upon_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n if_o i_o understand_v it_o aright_o for_o this_o sleep_v here_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o that_o watch_v which_o be_v a_o duty_n so_o often_o and_o so_o much_o press_v upon_o the_o disciple_n in_o the_o former_a chapter_n and_o this_o and_o many_o other_o place_n and_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v the_o scope_n by_o our_o saviour_n wind_v up_o all_o in_o that_o exhortation_n therefore_o watch_n for_o you_o know_v not_o what_o â—our_n he_o will_v come_v the_o foolish_a virgin_n and_o wise_a both_o be_v too_o foolish_a in_o this_o when_o he_o tarry_v they_o sleep_v and_o while_o they_o sleep_v he_o come_v and_o what_o prejudice_n it_o be_v to_o they_o afterward_o likely_a you_o may_v hear_v more_o full_o therefore_o say_v our_o saviour_n watch_n therefore_o this_o if_o i_o do_v insist_v a_o little_a upon_o it_o i_o hope_v it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o it_o be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o parable_n they_o all_o the_o kind_n you_o must_v know_v brethren_n we_o be_v 40._o not_o speak_v of_o a_o bodily_a sleep_n whether_o ordinary_a or_o extraordinary_a from_o a_o natural_a or_o a_o supernatural_a cause_n a_o spiritual_a be_v in_o its_o natural_a capacity_n proper_o never_o sleep_v but_o the_o body_n it_o be_v never_o weary_a of_o its_o act_n but_o the_o body_n be_v which_o it_o use_v as_o its_o instrument_n as_o it_o never_o grow_v old_a so_o it_o never_o grow_v sleepy_a and_o therefore_o we_o do_v not_o consider_v the_o soul_n neither_o in_o a_o natural_a capacity_n only_o as_o it_o be_v a_o spiritual_a be_v but_o in_o a_o supernatural_a capacity_n that_o be_v to_o say_v as_o it_o have_v some_o divine_a quality_n put_v upon_o it_o whereby_o it_o act_n and_o work_n towards_o god_n and_o towards_o christ_n as_o natural_a agent_n act_v by_o their_o quality_n the_o fire_n by_o its_o heat_n so_o the_o soul_n by_o its_o faith_n and_o by_o its_o love_n and_o by_o its_o humility_n so_o then_o we_o be_v here_o consider_v not_o a_o naked_a soul_n but_o a_o soul_n as_o it_o have_v either_o in_o reality_n or_o else_o in_o appearance_n put_v on_o christ_n for_o righteousness_n and_o such_o a_o sleep_n so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n this_o spiriritual_a sleep_n there_o be_v degree_n a_o nap_v and_o nod_v now_o asleep_a and_o then_o awake_v again_o we_o be_v neither_o awake_a nor_o asleep_a there_o be_v interruption_n successive_o in_o our_o sleep_a and_o wake_v but_o when_o a_o man_n be_v asleep_a he_o go_v on_o away_o with_o it_o continue_v so_o great_a a_o while_n discernible_a they_o will_v be_v this_o be_v hint_v before_o in_o the_o argument_n of_o the_o point_n and_o this_o will_v put_v a_o end_n to_o many_o sad_a complaint_n that_o a_o child_n of_o god_n preach_v most_o plausible_o may_v make_v long_a prayer_n with_o those_o hypocrite_n though_o they_o grow_v not_o inward_o at_o all_o therefore_o take_v heed_n of_o stick_v here_o or_o because_o thou_o grow_v more_o civil_o escape_v the_o pollution_n of_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o alas_o be_v the_o same_o in_o disposition_n a_o swine_n in_o nature_n yea_o there_o may_v be_v a_o grow_v in_o assent_n to_o the_o truth_n such_o a_o say_v as_o the_o devil_n have_v which_o make_v they_o tremble_v and_o some_o kind_n of_o affection_n too_o as_o herod_n have_v but_o by_o how_o much_o we_o see_v there_o more_o need_n have_v we_o to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o in_o this_o respect_n consider_v how_o many_o grow_v worse_o and_o worse_o nine_o the_o strong_a we_o grow_v in_o the_o habit_n of_o grace_n how_o quick_o be_v some_o man_n spirit_n up_o in_o duty_n like_o tinder_n to_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o like_o the_o spirit_n of_o wine_n or_o oil_n quick_o fire_v therefore_o god_n will_v have_v the_o fat_a offer_v up_o it_o will_v quick_o take_v fire_n and_o when_o our_o service_n come_v off_o with_o delight_n and_o cheerfulness_n than_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v with_o it_o often_o be_v roll_a thyself_o and_o thy_o burden_n poor_a burden_a soul_n upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n cast_v thyself_o upon_o he_o and_o thou_o shall_v find_v as_o much_o rest_n in_o it_o for_o the_o present_a so_o also_o a_o increase_n of_o faith_n and_o a_o feel_n also_o that_o thou_o do_v believe_v after_o a_o time_n and_o so_o for_o other_o thing_n alas_o be_v there_o a_o day_n that_o go_v over_o our_o head_n but_o there_o be_v use_v for_o faith_n it_o be_v the_o very_a life_n of_o a_o christian_a the_o life_n i_o now_o live_v i_o live_v by_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o 20._o son_n of_o a_o man_n of_o much_o grace_n of_o much_o courage_n and_o zeal_n and_o faith_n and_o diligence_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o that_o famous_a servant_n of_o god_n mr._n bolton_n it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o that_o six_o time_n a_o day_n he_o pray_v and_o so_o other_o observe_v it_o when_o you_o will_v where_o you_o see_v a_o grow_a christian_a indeed_o follow_v he_o to_o his_o closet_n persuade_v we_o it_o be_v so_o in_o this_o case_n we_o shall_v visit_v he_o more_o the_o great_a treasurer_n of_o heaven_n the_o lord_n jesus_n in_o who_o all_o treasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n be_v hide_v yea_o and_o of_o faith_n and_o all_o grace_n for_o of_o his_o fullness_n we_o receive_v grace_n for_o grace_n o_o how_o 3._o will_v we_o ply_v he_o give_v he_o no_o rest_n he_o will_v have_v much_o more_o of_o our_o company_n but_o that_o we_o have_v slight_a persuasion_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o make_v use_n of_o prayer_n as_o a_o duty_n and_o a_o task_n many_o of_o we_o and_o not_o a_o singular_a mean_n of_o improve_n our_o grace_n brethren_n be_v we_o but_o as_o much_o in_o communion_n with_o god_n as_o david_n we_o may_v have_v the_o strength_n of_o david_n it_o be_v but_o ask_v and_o have_v knock_v and_o it_o shall_v be_v open_v the_o spirit_n which_o work_v all_o this_o will_v not_o be_v 9_o deny_v if_o you_o ask_v and_o ask_v not_o amiss_o as_o you_o hear_v late_o god_n 3._o will_v expend_v willing_o his_o treasure_n of_o grace_n upon_o we_o and_o pour_v out_o the_o fullness_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o we_o but_o he_o will_v be_v inquire_v of_o for_o these_o thing_n well_o then_o if_o we_o will_v grow_v in_o grace_n we_o must_v be_v much_o in_o prayer_n i_o do_v believe_v some_o of_o we_o can_v speak_v it_o but_o too_o experimental_o that_o when_o we_o have_v find_v corruption_n prevail_v and_o ourselves_o foil_v and_o bring_v under_o this_o have_v be_v the_o reason_n we_o have_v restrain_v prayer_n from_o the_o almighty_a either_o we_o have_v neglect_v this_o duty_n or_o else_o we_o have_v be_v slight_a and_o slubber_v shuffle_v it_o if_o not_o out_o of_o door_n yet_o to_o the_o very_a door_n and_o general_o observe_v it_o we_o can_v more_o easy_o find_v time_n for_o any_o thing_n then_o for_o prayer_n every_o other_o business_n have_v its_o hour_n to_o attend_v upon_o but_o if_o any_o thing_n be_v neglect_v it_o must_v be_v prayer_n or_o else_o post_v over_o whereas_o alas_o it_o will_v no_o more_o hinder_v our_o business_n then_o our_o meal-time_n do_v which_o must_v be_v have_v and_o i_o know_v brethren_n that_o some_o of_o we_o be_v able_a to_o say_v it_o that_o we_o have_v see_v when_o the_o prosper_a presence_n of_o the_o lord_n have_v be_v with_o we_o we_o have_v come_v on_o more_o and_o do_v more_o in_o a_o short_a time_n then_o at_o another_o time_n in_o many_o time_n as_o long_o a_o time_n and_o yet_o so_o wretched_a heart_n we_o have_v that_o we_o content_v ourselves_o with_o any_o thing_n in_o this_o duty_n if_o we_o appear_v before_o the_o lord_n we_o think_v it_o be_v enough_o we_o do_v not_o strive_v unto_o prayer_n and_o watch_v unto_o prayer_n and_o labour_n by_o blow_v the_o green_a wood_n that_o will_v hardly_o kindle_v to_o get_v it_o on_o a_o flame_n before_o we_o go_v out_o of_o his_o presence_n o_o jacob_n will_v not_o let_v he_o go_v without_o a_o blessing_n brethren_n in_o what_o we_o can_v find_v our_o heart_n wrought_v up_o to_o such_o a_o frame_n it_o be_v the_o very_a growth_n itself_o in_o a_o great_a part_n therefore_o thou_o be_v mistake_v second_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o find_v it_o may_v be_v sometime_o such_o warning_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o pain_n thou_o have_v sometime_o be_v blow_v at_o the_o coal_n until_o thy_o arm_n ache_v with_o hold_v the_o bellows_o and_o thy_o heart_n ache_v and_o yet_o thou_o can_v not_o get_v thy_o faith_n and_o thy_o affection_n into_o a_o frame_n but_o thou_o be_v as_o dead_a and_o dull_a as_o before_o now_o in_o such_o a_o case_n observe_v it_o do_v thou_o not_o gain_v thus_o much_o by_o it_o to_o have_v vile_a
plant_v a_o tree_n or_o plant_n in_o such_o a_o dark_a place_n where_o the_o sun_n never_o come_v but_o be_v keep_v off_o by_o this_o or_o that_o hindrance_n it_o will_v not_o grow_v and_o so_o under_o tree_n that_o shade_v the_o sun_n and_o keep_v the_o rain_n from_o the_o seed_n most_o herb_n will_v not_o grow_v and_o so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n therefore_o look_v to_o this_o brethren_n in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n as_o ever_o you_o hope_v to_o recover_v yourselves_o and_o to_o grow_v indeed_o six_o labour_v to_o make_v special_a use_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n that_o particular_o concern_v this_o matter_n i_o know_v this_o be_v reducible_a to_o that_o former_a head_n of_o exercising-grace_n and_o particular_o the_o grace_n of_o faith_n because_o this_o be_v a_o special_a object_n whereupon_o the_o act_n be_v to_o be_v exercise_v but_o for_o order_n sake_n we_o shall_v put_v it_o distinct_o by_o itself_o in_o this_o place_n be_v this_o the_o grievance_n of_o thy_o soul_n indeed_o that_o thou_o grow_v not_o why_o here_o be_v a_o rich_a treasury_n in_o the_o promise_n which_o if_o it_o be_v draw_v out_o can_v but_o much_o further_a our_o growth_n first_o then_o search_v out_o these_o promise_n they_o be_v many_o i_o can_v give_v you_o they_o all_o a_o taste_n i_o will_v to_o help_v the_o weak_a what_o a_o sweet_a promise_n be_v that_o in_o the_o first_o psalm_n look_v upon_o it_o as_o such_o they_o shall_v be_v like_o the_o tree_n plant_v by_o the_o river_n of_o water_n brethren_n nothing_o ordinary_o kill_v tree_n more_o than_o they_o shall_v flourish_v this_o in_o the_o text_n they_o shall_v go_v forth_o it_o be_v 12._o a_o promise_n they_o shall_v grow_v up_o as_o calf_n of_o the_o stall_n and_o that_o in_o hos_n 14._o 5._o god_n will_v be_v as_o the_o dew_n unto_o israel_n and_o he_o shall_v grow_v up_o as_o the_o lily_n and_o spread_v his_o root_n as_o lebanon_n grow_v in_o rootedness_n and_o grow_v quick_o and_o grow_v in_o beauty_n and_o sweetness_n the_o smell_n shall_v be_v as_o lebanon_n here_o the_o growth_n be_v set_v forth_o under_o that_o metaphor_n of_o a_o tree_n or_o plant_v the_o dew_n you_o know_v upon_o the_o mow_v grass_n make_v it_o spring_n again_o else_o it_o will_v wither_v and_o the_o corn_n for_o a_o time_n as_o dead_a under_o the_o clod_n yet_o the_o dew_n make_v it_o grow_v up_o or_o as_o the_o corn_n that_o seem_v to_o wither_v away_o the_o dew_n refresh_v it_o and_o make_v it_o revive_v indeed_o i_o will_v not_o burden_n your_o memory_n take_v but_o one_o more_o and_o that_o be_v in_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n to_o they_o that_o have_v no_o might_n he_o increase_v strength_n and_o he_o give_v power_n to_o they_o 29._o that_o faint_a to_o they_o that_o have_v no_o might_n the_o original_n be_v very_o emphatical_a the_o plural_a with_o the_o hebrew_n as_o some_o note_n when_o it_o be_v affirmative_a set_v forth_o the_o abundancy_n the_o eminency_n or_o excellency_n of_o any_o quaility_n or_o virtue_n as_o wisdom_n for_o wisdom_n in_o many_o place_n in_o the_o proverb_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o most_o excellent_a wisdom_n or_o abundance_n so_o in_o the_o negative_a it_o often_o signify_v the_o great_a want_n in_o a_o eminent_a degree_n of_o such_o or_o such_o a_o qualification_n as_o here_o such_o as_o have_v no_o strength_n that_o be_v to_o say_v very_o little_a none_o at_o all_o such_o as_o faint_v and_o languish_v than_o you_o know_v strength_n be_v very_o little_a so_o again_o they_o be_v a_o people_n of_o no_o understanding_n in_o the_o plural_a 11._o number_n and_o again_o there_o be_v no_o safety_n or_o salvation_n or_o deliverance_n wrought_v in_o the_o earth_n there_o be_v no_o deliverance_n at_o all_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o there_o be_v not_o many_o deliverance_n but_o there_o be_v not_o any_o at_o all_o and_o so_o here_o such_o as_o have_v no_o might_n it_o be_v in_o the_o original_a and_o we_o read_v such_o as_o have_v no_o might_n alas_o they_o have_v no_o strength_n to_o those_o he_o will_v increase_v might_n now_o i_o say_v gather_v together_o such_o promise_n as_o these_o second_o not_o only_o so_o but_o dwell_v upon_o they_o in_o your_o thought_n it_o may_v be_v at_o the_o first_o or_o second_o sight_n of_o they_o there_o will_v be_v little_o arise_v to_o the_o soul_n from_o they_o but_o you_o must_v dwell_v upon_o they_o as_o the_o bee_n do_v that_o will_v not_o off_o the_o flower_n until_o she_o have_v get_v some_o sweetness_n from_o it_o so_o do_v you_o make_v these_o promise_v the_o object_n of_o your_o meditation_n can_v you_o have_v any_o thing_n sweet_a to_o meditate_v upon_o then_o a_o promise_n in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o this_o be_v sure_a david_n when_o he_o meditate_a upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o his_o meditation_n be_v sweet_a to_o he_o be_v not_o only_o the_o command_n but_o the_o promise_n these_o indeed_o be_v the_o honey-suckle_n to_o dwell_v upon_o these_o 34._o you_o shall_v find_v much_o refresh_n in_o break_v the_o bone_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o marrow_n in_o they_o you_o will_v not_o be_v able_a at_o first_o to_o find_v
