delight_n but_o because_o the_o object_n that_o be_v know_v be_v not_o adequate_a to_o the_o extent_n of_o the_o understanding_n it_o return_v not_o a_o answerable_a return_n to_o the_o understanding_n and_o therefore_o though_o it_o take_v some_o delight_n in_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o faint_a and_o weak_a but_o at_o utmost_a it_o rest_v not_o in_o it_o but_o move_v to_o something_o else_o but_o this_o object_n be_v more_o than_o adequate_a to_o the_o large_a understanding_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o understanding_n be_v fill_v with_o it_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o rest_n in_o it_o with_o the_o most_o absolute_a complacence_n and_o delight_n that_o that_o power_n be_v capable_a of_o 2._o but_o though_o the_o understanding_n be_v able_a to_o read_v all_o the_o infinite_a perfection_n of_o god_n yet_o if_o that_o other_o great_a faculty_n be_v not_o satisfy_v as_o it_o be_v impossible_a the_o soul_n shall_v be_v complete_o happy_a so_o it_o be_v possible_a it_o may_v be_v extreme_o miserable_a if_o while_o the_o understanding_n contemplate_v the_o greatness_n power_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n the_o soul_n shall_v not_o partake_v of_o it_o but_o that_o power_n engage_v against_o it_o therefore_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o communication_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n whereof_o it_o be_v capable_a and_o which_o the_o will_n desire_v by_o let_v in_o upon_o the_o soul_n the_o beam_n and_o light_n of_o his_o love_n his_o favour_n his_o acceptation_n his_o delight_n happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n separate_v but_o how_o can_v this_o be_v say_v to_o be_v the_o happiness_n of_o man_n which_o consist_v of_o a_o body_n and_o inferior_a faculty_n subservient_fw-fr thereunto_o and_o to_o his_o subsistence_n as_o a_o man_n or_o whither_o and_o how_o can_v this_o happiness_n be_v acquire_v or_o enjoy_v by_o man_n in_o this_o life_n since_o his_o soul_n now_o act_n and_o move_v organical_o and_o according_a to_o the_o temper_n and_o accommodation_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o that_o clear_a and_o undisturbed_a knowledge_n of_o god_n or_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n and_o if_o it_o be_v how_o can_v that_o accommodate_v the_o necessity_n of_o his_o outward_a man_n these_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v to_o answer_v this_o question_n 1._o what_o be_v the_o degree_n of_o happiness_n attainable_a by_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v 2_o what_o happiness_n be_v attainable_a for_o the_o whole_a compositum_fw-la or_o frame_n of_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v touch_v the_o former_a we_o say_v 1._o there_o be_v not_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o happiness_n to_o be_v expect_v for_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n as_o there_o be_v when_o either_o it_o be_v free_v from_o the_o body_n or_o the_o body_n free_v from_o those_o imperfection_n of_o mix_a body_n which_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o the_o reason_n be_v evident_a in_o both_o the_o great_a faculty_n in_o that_o of_o the_o understanding_n it_o work_v now_o by_o organ_n and_o instrument_n of_o the_o body_n and_o be_v straiten_v in_o its_o operation_n according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o those_o organ_n and_o instrument_n it_o see_v now_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n though_o it_o work_v out_o of_o that_o sight_n high_a conclusion_n and_o if_o it_o have_v as_o once_o it_o have_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o immediate_a vision_n of_o god_n yet_o it_o can_v not_o be_v so_o capacious_a within_o the_o limit_n of_o the_o body_n as_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v mere_o spiritual_a or_o the_o body_n spiritualise_v again_o as_o to_o the_o will_n it_o can_v exercise_v the_o utmost_a of_o his_o activity_n in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n because_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o humane_a condition_n require_v some_o of_o its_o thought_n provision_n and_o motion_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v so_o receptive_a of_o that_o infinite_a love_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v confine_v and_o straiten_v with_o a_o corruptible_a body_n as_o if_o it_o be_v at_o large_a 2._o that_o the_o wise_a god_n do_v provide_v a_o proportionable_a degree_n of_o happiness_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n and_o this_o upon_o the_o reason_n already_o give_v now_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n be_v more_o incomplete_a and_o imperfect_a that_o happiness_n that_o be_v so_o ordain_v for_o it_o though_o it_o be_v full_o proportionable_a to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n here_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_a as_o that_o consummate_v happiness_n which_o be_v provide_v for_o it_o hereafter_o it_o be_v perfect_o proportionable_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n though_o not_o proportionable_a to_o that_o enjoyment_n which_o the_o soul_n may_v have_v when_o free_v from_o the_o straitness_n of_o the_o body_n and_o as_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n be_v inferior_a to_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n separate_v so_o questionless_a as_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n receive_v improvement_n and_o abatement_n in_o its_o act_n in_o the_o body_n by_o the_o conjunction_n with_o it_o according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o temper_n frame_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o happiness_n in_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v more_o or_o less_o if_o man_n have_v continue_v in_o his_o perfection_n a_o child_n have_v not_o have_v the_o same_o measure_n of_o internal_a happiness_n as_o a_o man_n bad_a for_o though_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o same_o its_o operation_n in_o the_o body_n be_v diversify_v in_o their_o perfection_n according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n which_o natural_o the_o soul_n exercise_v in_o its_o operation_n 3._o that_o though_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la man_n be_v ordain_v to_o temporal_a happiness_n in_o his_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o somewhat_o have_v intervene_v and_o daily_o do_v intervene_v whereby_o that_o fruition_n be_v divert_v and_o disturb_v what_o ever_o it_o be_v of_o this_o more_o infra_fw-la the_o high_a degree_n of_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n consist_v in_o these_o thing_n 1._o in_o a_o anticipation_n or_o expectation_n or_o prevision_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o it_o shall_v enjoy_v this_o though_o it_o be_v not_o a_o real_a fruition_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o near_o it_o in_o the_o soul_n if_o a_o miserable_a pilgrim_n shall_v have_v a_o certain_a assurance_n that_o after_o twenty_o year_n walk_n he_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v invest_v in_o a_o perpetual_a kingdom_n wherein_o he_o shall_v have_v perfection_n of_o ease_n and_o delight_n this_o prevision_n of_o this_o happiness_n be_v so_o present_a in_o his_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v in_o effect_n present_o enjoy_v and_o over-weighs_a the_o present_a tediousness_n of_o his_o journey_n 2._o in_o a_o conjunction_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n in_o knowledge_n of_o he_o love_n unto_o he_o and_o return_v of_o his_o love_n to_o we_o in_o a_o measure_n proportionable_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o our_o understanding_n and_o will._n this_o though_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_a but_o admit_v of_o increase_v yet_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la may_v be_v proportionable_a to_o the_o most_o perfect_a operation_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n though_o all_o good_a be_v the_o object_n of_o the_o will_n in_o its_o latitude_n yet_o the_o will_n fasten_v particular_o upon_o that_o good_a which_o by_o the_o understanding_n be_v present_v to_o be_v his_o chief_a good_a and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o union_n unto_o this_o good_a be_v the_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n and_o subservient_fw-fr to_o this_o motion_n be_v the_o several_a passion_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v but_o the_o impression_n of_o the_o action_n of_o the_o will_n upon_o the_o blood_n and_o spirit_n whereby_o the_o will_n excit_v and_o produce_v those_o external_a action_n in_o the_o body_n which_o tend_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o its_o command_n and_o therefore_o i_o omit_v they_o upon_o what_o have_v be_v say_v may_v appear_v wherein_o this_o set_v the_o understanding_n a_o work_n which_o if_o not_o right_o principled_a take_v up_o that_o for_o his_o good_a which_o either_o the_o temper_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o body_n and_o fleshly_a appetite_n or_o the_o present_a opportunity_n suggest_v and_o affect_v and_o put_v the_o intention_n of_o the_o will_n upon_o it_o as_o pleasure_n or_o profit_n or_o honour_n or_o empty_a speculation_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o these_o a_o man_n that_o have_v almost_o any_o intellectual_n though_o it_o may_v be_v he_o arrive_v not_o to_o the_o true_a and_o positive_a knowledge_n of_o what_o be_v his_o supreme_a end_n most_o common_o find_v that_o this_o be_v not_o and_o though_o sometime_o he_o know_v not_o why_o yet_o he_o be_v sick_a and_o weary_a of_o they_o as_o unsatisfy_v and_o deceive_a thing_n wheraa_v the_o true_a cause_n be_v that_o disproportion_n they_o bear_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v not_o that_o end_n to_o which_o it_o be_v ordain_v and_o will_v move_v if_o it_o know_v it_o and_o how_o to_o attain_v it_o again_o though_o the_o understanding_n do_v sometime_o find_v that_o these_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n will_v make_v i_o happy_a but_o i_o spy_v the_o true_a and_o everlasting_a happiness_n yet_o the_o conviction_n be_v not_o so_o strong_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o dare_v conclude_v the_o pursuit_n thereof_o to_o be_v prefer_v before_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o those_o delight_n which_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o and_o from_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o competition_n of_o these_o present_a enjoyment_n will_v soon_o starve_v and_o famish_v these_o uncompleat_a conviction_n and_o all_o pursuit_n in_o the_o will_n of_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n happen_v in_o the_o understanding_n 2._o in_o the_o will_n which_o have_v lose_v her_o liberty_n to_o follow_v her_o light_n and_o be_v captivate_v by_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n the_o understanding_n be_v right_o enlighten_v present_v to_o the_o will_v several_a end_n the_o subordinate_a end_n preservation_n of_o the_o compositum_fw-la by_o meat_n and_o drink_n acquisition_n of_o wealth_n to_o provide_v these_o convenience_n obtain_v of_o power_n to_o secure_v that_o wealth_n the_o supreme_a end_n blessedness_n and_o that_o wherein_o it_o consist_v show_v the_o will_n that_o the_o value_n of_o these_o end_n must_v be_v the_o measure_n of_o her_o pursuit_n of_o they_o viz._n with_o subordination_n to_o the_o supreme_a end_n in_o order_n to_o it_o and_o bid_v she_o beware_v of_o turn_v the_o subordinate_a end_n to_o ultimate_a end_n but_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n either_o before_o the_o counsel_n of_o the_o understanding_n have_v precipitate_v the_o will_n into_o a_o violent_a pursuit_n of_o those_o present_a and_o sensible_a good_n or_o so_o bewitch_v she_o after_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n thereof_o that_o it_o can_v no_o more_o listen_v to_o the_o entertainment_n of_o the_o pursuit_n of_o a_o future_a spiritual_a good_a than_o if_o it_o have_v no_o reason_n the_o beast_n in_o man_n have_v get_v the_o man_n upon_o his_o back_n and_o run_v away_o with_o he_o contrary_a to_o the_o cry_n and_o dictate_v even_o of_o reason_n that_o shall_v rule_v it_o and_o of_o these_o and_o the_o like_a defect_n all_o mankind_n be_v sick_a both_o in_o his_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o cure_v we_o must_v be_v before_o we_o can_v clear_o and_o uniform_o move_v to_o our_o supreme_a end_n which_o what_o it_o be_v as_o the_o next_o inquiry_n chap._n iu._n of_o the_o supreme_a end_n of_o man._n what_o be_v that_o good_a for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n as_o it_o be_v the_o great_a inquiry_n of_o the_o wise_a of_o man_n so_o it_o be_v that_o problem_n that_o have_v torture_v the_o wit_n and_o weary_v the_o pursuit_n of_o most_o of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n that_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world._n the_o universality_n of_o the_o question_n grow_v from_o that_o restless_a motion_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n after_o some_o end_n which_o put_v every_o man_n at_o last_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o somewhat_o as_o his_o end_n though_o it_o may_v be_v not_o upon_o the_o speculative_a and_o critical_a inquiry_n concern_v it_o as_o the_o ordinary_a rational_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n teach_v a_o man_n to_o conclude_v rational_o though_o he_o have_v not_o that_o artificial_a reason_n of_o reason_n which_o be_v acquire_v by_o speculation_n and_o study_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o put_v many_o upon_o the_o inquiry_n and_o all_o upon_o the_o prosecution_n of_o some_o end_n so_o the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o decision_n do_v produce_v that_o variety_n of_o judgement_n and_o practice_n concern_v this_o which_o be_v impossible_a all_o to_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a but_o possible_o they_o may_v be_v all_o false_a in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o supreme_a good_a and_o adequate_a end_n of_o man_n which_o be_v his_o happiness_n and_o from_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o among_o the_o several_a determination_n of_o man_n concern_v this_o matter_n each_o do_v abundant_o convince_v the_o other_o to_o be_v error_n and_o mistake_n and_o though_o none_o do_v sufficient_o satisfy_v and_o convince_v a_o man_n that_o it_o be_v the_o right_n yet_o do_v abundant_o satisfy_v that_o the_o adverse_a opinion_n be_v mistake_v concern_v this_o point_n because_o the_o truth_n be_v but_o one_o the_o rest_n be_v all_o error_n and_o though_o some_o carry_v more_o likelihood_n of_o reason_n than_o other_o yet_o it_o carry_v so_o much_o distance_n from_o truth_n that_o it_o be_v discernible_a not_o to_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o the_o mistake_n be_v not_o only_o evident_a to_o reason_n but_o even_o to_o sense_n itself_o that_o man_n that_o will_v go_v about_o to_o persuade_v i_o that_o happiness_n consist_v in_o corporal_a pleasure_n outward_a good_a of_o body_n or_o fortune_n wealth_n or_o honour_n knowledge_n of_o all_o create_a being_n practice_n of_o moral_a virtue_n etc._n etc._n i_o need_v no_o other_o conviction_n of_o the_o falsity_n of_o these_o but_o this_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o any_o or_o all_o of_o these_o i_o still_o find_v those_o affection_n in_o my_o soul_n that_o can_v consist_v with_o happiness_n but_o mingle_v misery_n with_o this_o thin_a and_o empty_a happiness_n 1._o desire_v of_o somewhat_o more_o or_o somewhat_o else_o which_o i_o have_v not_o which_o arise_v not_o from_o the_o goodness_n of_o what_o i_o enjoy_v but_o from_o the_o emptiness_n and_o narrowness_n of_o it_o 2._o consequent_o grief_n for_o what_o i_o want_v and_o have_v not_o 3._o fear_v of_o loss_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o never_o any_o man_n in_o this_o world_n in_o all_o the_o enjoyment_n he_o ever_o have_v or_o be_v capable_a of_o except_o that_o which_o we_o now_o intend_v to_o speak_v of_o but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o have_v these_o three_o affection_n about_o he_o actual_o work_v which_o can_v never_o consist_v with_o happiness_n now_o the_o general_a ground_n of_o these_o mistake_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n be_v 1._o the_o error_n of_o solemn_a and_o serious_a use_n of_o this_o duty_n interrupt_v a_o custom_n of_o sin_n by_o degree_n weaken_v the_o old_a man_n and_o will_v in_o time_n make_v a_o strangeness_n between_o our_o lust_n
