something_o else_o but_o this_o object_n be_v more_o than_o adequate_a to_o the_o large_a understanding_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o understanding_n be_v fill_v with_o it_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o rest_n in_o it_o with_o the_o most_o absolute_a complacence_n and_o delight_n that_o that_o power_n be_v capable_a of_o 2._o but_o though_o the_o understanding_n be_v able_a to_o read_v all_o thereunto_o and_o to_o his_o subsistence_n as_o a_o man_n or_o whither_o and_o how_o can_v this_o happiness_n be_v acquire_v or_o enjoy_v by_o man_n in_o this_o life_n since_o his_o soul_n now_o act_n and_o move_v organical_o and_o according_a to_o the_o temper_n and_o accommodation_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o that_o clear_a and_o undisturbed_a knowledge_n of_o god_n or_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n and_o if_o it_o be_v how_o can_v that_o accommodate_v the_o necessity_n of_o his_o outward_a man_n these_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v to_o answer_v this_o question_n 1._o what_o be_v the_o degree_n of_o happiness_n attainable_a by_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v 2_o what_o happiness_n be_v attainable_a for_o the_o whole_a compositum_fw-la or_o frame_n of_o man_n in_o this_o life_n and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v touch_v the_o former_a we_o say_v 1._o there_o be_v not_o the_o same_o degree_n of_o happiness_n to_o be_v expect_v for_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n as_o there_o be_v when_o either_o it_o be_v free_v from_o the_o body_n or_o the_o body_n free_v from_o those_o imperfection_n of_o mix_a body_n which_o we_o carry_v about_o we_o the_o reason_n be_v evident_a in_o both_o the_o great_a faculty_n in_o that_o of_o the_o understanding_n it_o work_v now_o by_o organ_n and_o instrument_n of_o the_o body_n and_o be_v straiten_v in_o its_o operation_n according_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o those_o organ_n and_o instrument_n it_o see_v now_o with_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n though_o it_o work_v out_o of_o that_o sight_n high_a conclusion_n and_o if_o it_o have_v as_o once_o it_o have_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o immediate_a vision_n of_o god_n yet_o it_o can_v not_o be_v so_o capacious_a within_o the_o limit_n of_o the_o body_n as_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v mere_o spiritual_a or_o the_o body_n spiritualise_v again_o as_o to_o the_o will_n it_o can_v exercise_v the_o utmost_a of_o his_o activity_n in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n because_o the_o necessity_n of_o the_o humane_a condition_n require_v some_o of_o its_o thought_n provision_n and_o motion_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v so_o receptive_a of_o that_o infinite_a love_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v confine_v and_o straiten_v with_o a_o corruptible_a body_n as_o if_o it_o be_v at_o large_a 2._o that_o the_o wise_a god_n do_v provide_v a_o proportionable_a degree_n of_o happiness_n to_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n and_o this_o upon_o the_o reason_n already_o give_v now_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n be_v more_o incomplete_a and_o imperfect_a that_o happiness_n that_o be_v so_o ordain_v for_o it_o though_o it_o be_v full_o proportionable_a to_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n here_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_a as_o that_o consummate_v happiness_n which_o be_v provide_v for_o it_o hereafter_o it_o be_v perfect_o proportionable_a to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n though_o not_o proportionable_a to_o that_o enjoyment_n which_o the_o soul_n may_v have_v when_o free_v from_o the_o straitness_n of_o the_o body_n and_o as_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n be_v inferior_a to_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n separate_v so_o questionless_a as_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n receive_v improvement_n and_o abatement_n in_o its_o act_n in_o the_o body_n by_o the_o conjunction_n with_o it_o according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o temper_n frame_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o body_n so_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o happiness_n in_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v more_o or_o less_o if_o man_n have_v continue_v in_o his_o perfection_n a_o child_n have_v not_o have_v the_o same_o measure_n of_o internal_a happiness_n as_o a_o man_n bad_a for_o though_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o same_o its_o operation_n in_o the_o body_n be_v diversify_v in_o their_o perfection_n according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o the_o temper_n of_o the_o body_n which_o natural_o the_o soul_n exercise_v in_o its_o operation_n 3._o that_o though_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la man_n be_v ordain_v to_o temporal_a happiness_n in_o his_o soul_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o somewhat_o have_v intervene_v and_o daily_o do_v intervene_v whereby_o that_o fruition_n be_v divert_v and_o disturb_v what_o ever_o it_o be_v of_o this_o more_o infra_fw-la the_o high_a degree_n of_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o this_o life_n consist_v in_o these_o thing_n 1._o in_o a_o anticipation_n or_o expectation_n or_o prevision_n of_o that_o happiness_n which_o it_o shall_v enjoy_v this_o though_o it_o be_v not_o a_o real_a fruition_n yet_o it_o be_v very_o near_o it_o in_o the_o soul_n if_o a_o miserable_a pilgrim_n shall_v have_v a_o certain_a assurance_n that_o after_o twenty_o year_n walk_n he_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v invest_v in_o a_o perpetual_a kingdom_n wherein_o he_o shall_v have_v perfection_n of_o ease_n and_o delight_n this_o prevision_n of_o this_o happiness_n be_v so_o present_a in_o his_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v in_o effect_n present_o enjoy_v and_o over-weighs_a the_o present_a tediousness_n of_o his_o journey_n 2._o in_o a_o conjunction_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n in_o knowledge_n of_o he_o love_n unto_o he_o and_o return_v of_o his_o love_n to_o we_o in_o a_o measure_n proportionable_a to_o the_o capacity_n of_o our_o understanding_n and_o will._n this_o though_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_a but_o admit_v of_o increase_v yet_o ex_fw-la natura_fw-la rei_fw-la may_v be_v proportionable_a to_o the_o most_o perfect_a operation_n of_o our_o soul_n in_o the_o body_n happiness_n viz._n that_o no_o temporal_a thing_n no_o carnal_a pleasure_n no_o contemplation_n of_o the_o creature_n be_v commensurate_a to_o the_o nature_n and_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o best_a part_n of_o man_n and_o consequent_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v his_o end._n yet_o this_o though_o it_o take_v he_o off_o from_o the_o wrong_a way_n it_o set_v he_o not_o in_o the_o right_a way_n but_o leave_v he_o at_o a_o stand_n therefore_o 2._o the_o second_o impediment_n be_v the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o object_n of_o this_o happiness_n the_o want_n of_o the_o knowledge_n till_o it_o be_v spiritualise_v in_o the_o species_n which_o be_v refine_v more_o and_o more_o the_o near_o they_o come_v to_o the_o soul_n first_o in_o the_o organ_n then_o in_o the_o fantasy_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o soul_n make_v use_v of_o they_o to_o any_o purpose_n be_v receive_v till_o by_o abstraction_n it_o have_v make_v they_o of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o herself_o and_o from_o this_o disproportion_n between_o the_o soul_n and_o those_o external_a enjoyment_n do_v arise_v that_o unsatisfactoriness_n that_o come_v by_o they_o to_o the_o soul_n for_o though_o they_o be_v useful_a to_o the_o body_n and_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v desirable_a by_o the_o soul_n itself_o in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n yet_o they_o reach_v not_o so_o far_o as_o the_o soul_n their_o end_n fall_v short_a of_o it_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n rest_v not_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o they_o nay_o though_o it_o see_v not_o its_o proper_a end_n yet_o it_o find_v a_o nauseum_fw-la in_o the_o excess_n of_o these_o and_o therefore_o be_v restless_a and_o move_v from_o one_o pleasure_n to_o another_o and_o this_o be_v likewise_o the_o reason_n why_o every_o outward_a pleasure_n be_v great_a in_o the_o expectation_n than_o in_o the_o fruition_n because_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o creature_n that_o the_o soul_n form_n can_v bring_v it_o near_o to_o the_o soul_n than_o the_o creature_n when_o it_o be_v enjoy_v can_v come_v and_o this_o imagination_n as_o it_o do_v delude_v the_o soul_n so_o it_o likewise_o take_v off_o much_o of_o that_o content_a which_o may_v be_v lawful_o find_v and_o use_v in_o the_o creature_n it_o make_v the_o pursuit_n too_o eager_a and_o fruition_n flat_a in_o that_o it_o be_v over_o expect_v 2._o the_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v consequent_o immortal_a and_o its_o felicity_n can_v therefore_o consist_v in_o that_o which_o can_v be_v co-extended_n with_o it_o be_v there_o a_o good_a imaginable_a that_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n hold_v proportion_n with_o the_o value_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o be_v perishable_a it_o be_v impossible_a that_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o good_a can_v the_o felicity_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v and_o that_o upon_o these_o reason_n 1._o because_o the_o duration_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o divisible_a and_o successive_a take_v it_o apart_o from_o the_o body_n a_o temporary_a felicity_n will_v be_v no_o felicity_n it_o be_v true_a we_o measure_v out_o our_o time_n by_o parcel_n as_o year_n and_o week_n and_o day_n and_o hour_n and_o minute_n but_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o so_o for_o though_o the_o duration_n thereof_o be_v not_o simple_o indivisible_a as_o in_o the_o duration_n of_o eternity_n yet_o it_o be_v far_o more_o swift_a than_o we_o and_o so_o will_v be_v almost_o insensible_a of_o a_o temporary_a good_a though_o of_o long_a continuance_n 2._o because_o the_o determination_n of_o that_o good_a will_v consequent_o determine_v its_o felicity_n so_o it_o can_v be_v no_o perfect_a happiness_n 3._o the_o very_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o most_o perfect_a good_a that_o the_o soul_n look_v upon_o as_o determinable_a be_v in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n mingle_v with_o a_o discontent_n grief_n and_o fear_v which_o be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o rob_v the_o soul_n of_o felicity_n in_o that_o very_a enjoyment_n when_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v take_v up_o with_o such_o sad_a preapprehension_n and_o preexpectation_n as_o these_o i_o now_o enjoy_v a_o good_a answerable_a to_o my_o desire_n and_o that_o fill_v up_o every_o the_o least_o vacuity_n and_o crave_v of_o my_o will_n yet_o i_o foresee_v that_o it_o be_v not_o last_v a_o time_n must_v come_v when_o i_o must_v lose_v it_o and_o it_o will_v die_v under_o my_o hand_n and_o yet_o my_o immortal_a be_v shall_v have_v continuance_n to_o all_o eternity_n when_o my_o present_a enjoyment_n shall_v serve_v but_o to_o increase_v my_o emptiness_n and_o misery_n with_o the_o sense_n of_o what_o i_o have_v and_o lose_v this_o handwriting_n upon_o the_o wall_n be_v enough_o to_o turn_v the_o high_a enjoyment_n that_o be_v but_o temporary_a into_o bitterness_n in_o the_o very_a enjoyment_n much_o more_o those_o vain_a and_o thin_a pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n that_o never_o come_v near_o the_o soul_n but_o in_o a_o deceitful_a imagination_n so_o then_o to_o the_o constitution_n of_o true_a happiness_n for_o a_o immortal_a substance_n there_o be_v re-required_n a_o immortal_a good._n 3._o it_o must_v be_v a_o good_a divide_v in_o its_o own_o nature_n from_o the_o soul._n there_o can_v nothing_o be_v the_o end_n and_o supreme_a good_a to_o itself_o but_o the_o first_o cause_n which_o alone_o be_v self-sufficient_a and_o that_o be_v manifest_a in_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o if_o itself_o be_v the_o end_n of_o itself_o it_o have_v its_o end_n and_o consequent_o will_v cease_v to_o move_v but_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o a_o pure_a act_n but_o receptive_a of_o something_o distinct_a from_o itself_o to_o which_o it_o move_v as_o to_o its_o end_n and_o perfection_n 4._o it_o must_v be_v a_o true_a and_o real_a good_a for_o since_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v in_o these_o two_o active_a faculty_n the_o understanding_n who_o anxious_a trouble_a crave_v unsatisfied_a mind_n now_o when_o the_o soul_n true_o know_v and_o be_v true_o set_v upon_o his_o supreme_a end_n it_o know_v its_o duty_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o idle_a it_o know_v the_o power_n of_o his_o maker_n therefore_o be_v not_o anxious_a and_o know_v the_o use_n and_o value_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o therefore_o value_v it_o no_o far_o than_o it_o be_v useful_a to_o its_o proper_a end_n it_o know_v the_o love_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o maker_n and_o therefore_o refer_v all_o to_o he_o as_o he_o that_o want_v neither_o power_n to_o provide_v for_o it_o nor_o wisdom_n to_o proportion_n nor_o love_n to_o communicate_v according_a to_o the_o exigence_n of_o my_o condition_n and_o admit_v he_o do_v his_o will_n must_v be_v do_v and_o not_o angelical_a way_n or_o how_o far_o it_o be_v able_a to_o retain_v or_o improve_v those_o conception_n and_o species_n that_o it_o have_v here_o and_o whether_o it_o have_v a_o complete_a operation_n or_o what_o degree_n of_o fruition_n it_o have_v of_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n it_o be_v above_o our_o reach_n to_o determine_v only_o this_o we_o may_v conjecture_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o place_v in_o that_o perfect_a degree_n of_o be_v and_o subsistence_n as_o be_v the_o angel_n in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v make_v in_o order_n to_o a_o body_n by_o which_o in_o it_o it_o exercise_v every_o thing_n to_o his_o proper_a mediate_a or_o ultimate_a end_n without_o the_o intervention_n of_o any_o mean_n yet_o as_o it_o be_v his_o own_o peculiar_a prerogative_n by_o his_o will_n to_o appoint_v every_o thing_n to_o its_o proper_a end_n wherein_o be_v see_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o goodness_n so_o the_o same_o will_n of_o he_o have_v order_v have_v appoint_v every_o thing_n to_o move_v to_o this_o end_n by_o a_o certain_a rule_n and_o certain_a mean_n and_o herein_o be_v see_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o wisdom_n such_o be_v the_o instinct_n and_o inclination_n of_o the_o creature_n by_o which_o they_o move_v to_o their_o special_a end_n and_o perfection_n and_o as_o these_o inclination_n be_v plant_v by_o god_n in_o the_o inferior_a creature_n the_o like_a be_v do_v though_o in_o a_o different_a manner_n in_o man_n at_o first_o in_o all_o probability_n of_o reason_n the_o difference_n be_v only_o thus_o in_o the_o creature_n all_o that_o be_v conduce_v to_o man_n may_v be_v create_v a_o intellectual_a creature_n yet_o till_o such_o time_n as_o natural_o through_o the_o sense_n or_o supernatural_o by_o the_o immediate_a infusion_n or_o demonstration_n of_o god_n he_o be_v but_o rasa_fw-la tabula_fw-la the_o first_o thing_n therefore_o that_o be_v put_v into_o the_o understanding_n in_o order_n to_o his_o supreme_a end_n be_v a_o stock_n of_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o that_o will_n of_o god_n which_o concern_v man._n and_o this_o will_n of_o god_n concern_v man_n be_v that_o mean_n which_o if_o know_v and_o pursue_v will_v guide_v a_o man_n to_o true_a happiness_n for_o as_o be_v before_o observe_v every_o thing_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o beautiful_a and_o happy_a as_o it_o hold_v conformity_n with_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o such_o be_v his_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n that_o when_o the_o creature_n move_v according_a to_o the_o law_n and_o will_n of_o its_o maker_n it_o do_v without_o fail_v attain_v that_o happiness_n whereof_o it_o be_v capable_a because_o it_o move_v to_o that_o end_n for_o which_o it_o be_v appoint_v by_o the_o first_o cause_n now_o because_o god_n have_v make_v man_n a_o rational_a and_o intellectual_a creature_n he_o appoint_v a_o rational_a and_o intellectual_a way_n to_o move_v he_o to_o this_o end_n viz._n the_o knowledge_n of_o himself_o and_o of_o that_o rule_n or_o law_n the_o will_n sub_fw-la ratione_fw-la legis_fw-la a_o thing_n not_o only_o show_v to_o the_o understanding_n as_o the_o mean_n to_o bring_v he_o to_o happiness_n but_o also_o enjoin_v to_o the_o man_n as_o his_o duty_n under_o pain_n of_o gild_n and_o vengeance_n for_o herein_o consist_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o instinct_n in_o the_o inferior_a creature_n and_o this_o law_n give_v to_o man_n in_o those_o it_o be_v not_o proper_o a_o law_n because_o they_o be_v not_o intellectual_a nor_o voluntary_a agent_n therefore_o their_o recede_a from_o that_o
and_o rational_a deduction_n and_o from_o hence_o among_o mere_a natural_a man_n the_o contemplative_a be_v the_o most_o happy_a because_o he_o fit_v his_o soul_n with_o food_n in_o some_o measure_n end_n answerable_a to_o the_o soul_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o double_a reason_n 1._o in_o the_o fruition_n the_o very_a enjoyment_n of_o a_o suitable_a good_a which_o i_o be_o sure_a must_v leave_v i_o mingle_v fear_n and_o preapprehension_n of_o the_o loss_n of_o my_o present_a enjoyment_n and_o consequent_o can_v possible_o be_v happiness_n and_o from_o hence_o likewise_o grow_v that_o vexation_n which_o be_v dip_v in_o the_o high_a enjoyment_n every_o man_n in_o the_o very_a enjoyment_n have_v the_o present_a apprehension_n of_o a_o inevitable_a future_a loss_n of_o they_o especial_o in_o whereby_o it_o be_v enable_v to_o move_v to_o that_o end._n and_o these_o have_v a_o threefold_a use_n 1._o first_o they_o serve_v as_o fit_a receptacle_n to_o entertain_v and_o be_v unite_v unto_o that_o good_a which_o be_v the_o proper_a end_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o hold_v some_o proportion_n with_o that_o object_n wherein_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n consist_v 2._o they_o serve_v carry_v they_o on_o to_o that_o good_a according_a to_o that_o rule_n or_o propension_n the_o two_o great_a affection_n that_o every_o be_v be_v endue_v with_o be_v the_o truth_n of_o its_o be_v and_o the_o goodness_n of_o it_o answerable_a to_o those_o be_v the_o two_o great_a faculty_n or_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o understanding_n which_o be_v conversant_a about_o the_o former_a and_o the_o will_n which_o be_v conversant_a about_o the_o latter_a yet_o in_o the_o very_a same_o faculty_n both_o these_o be_v conjoin_v under_o their_o distinct_a notion_n the_o understanding_n take_v impression_n from_o without_o whether_o it_o be_v by_o the_o ordinary_a and_o natural_a way_n of_o the_o sense_n or_o by_o a_o supernatural_a impression_n or_o by_o artificial_a mean_n as_o speech_n or_o read_v or_o other_o sign_n and_o thus_o it_o receive_v not_o only_o simple_a apprehension_n but_o likewise_o complex_n or_o proposition_n now_o without_o this_o receptive_a power_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o knowledge_n to_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n because_o our_o knowledge_n be_v not_o by_o intuition_n as_o the_o divine_a knowledge_n be_v but_o by_o reception_n of_o the_o thing_n know_v into_o the_o soul._n and_o hence_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o all_o knowledge_n be_v extrinsical_a to_o the_o soul_n for_o though_o it_o be_v apta_fw-la nata_fw-la to_o receive_v the_o species_n or_o object_n into_o it_o yet_o without_o such_o reception_n it_o can_v actual_o know_v it_o 2._o a_o retentive_a power_n of_o the_o object_n or_o proposition_n receive_v without_o this_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o the_o discursive_a power_n of_o the_o understanding_n to_o hammer_v any_o thing_n out_o of_o it_o 3._o a_o active_a and_o discursive_a power_n whereby_o the_o understanding_n be_v able_a to_o work_v upon_o those_o object_n thus_o receive_v and_o retain_v and_o deduce_v conclusion_n and_o consequence_n from_o they_o so_o that_o though_o the_o foundation_n of_o this_o intellectual_a motion_n be_v from_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v impress_v from_o without_o upon_o the_o soul_n yet_o when_o they_o be_v once_o there_o this_o active_a and_o discursive_a part_n of_o the_o understanding_n can_v draw_v million_o of_o conclusion_n create_v million_o of_o mixture_n and_o entia_fw-la rationis_fw-la which_o present_v not_o themselves_o at_o first_o to_o the_o passive_a understanding_n the_o rule_n whereby_o this_o active_a power_n of_o the_o understanding_n work_v be_v that_o we_o call_v reason_n which_o be_v but_o a_o beam_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n a_o part_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man_n and_o of_o singular_a use_n in_o all_o his_o action_n if_o right_o use_v de_fw-fr hoc_fw-la infra_fw-la now_o as_o all_o receptive_a or_o passive_a power_n two_o kind_n 1._o passive_a knowledge_n which_o answer_v to_o the_o passive_a part_n of_o the_o understanding_n such_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o simple_a apprehension_n which_o come_v through_o
