god_n to_o follow_v she_o own_o inclination_n to_o content_v her_o sense_n and_o to_o employ_v herself_o in_o what_o she_o please_v make_v herself_o hereby_o unworthy_a to_o feel_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o to_o bear_v the_o effect_n of_o truth_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o deduce_v all_o into_o particular_n if_o it_o be_v necessary_a but_o not_o to_o trouble_v myself_o with_o all_o the_o fail_n that_o happen_v in_o this_o exercise_n it_o suffice_v that_o i_o say_v that_o the_o first_o study_n of_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v to_o know_v god_n according_a to_o the_o light_n and_o truth_n of_o faith_n to_o adhere_v strong_o to_o this_o knowledge_n to_o enter_v into_o a_o esteem_n of_o his_o greatness_n and_o then_o to_o honour_v and_o adore_v he_o with_o a_o honour_n worthy_a of_o god_n these_o word_n express_v much_o and_o include_v the_o first_o duty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o show_v wherein_o she_o must_v employ_v herself_o with_o care_n before_o all_o thing_n hence_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o their_o practice_n be_v not_o good_a who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o enter_v into_o some_o knowledge_n and_o esteem_n of_o god_n and_o receive_v some_o light_n in_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n whereby_o they_o feel_v themselves_o move_v and_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v by_o a_o humble_a respect_n and_o inward_a reverence_n before_o god_n instead_o of_o stay_v and_o receive_v at_o leisure_n this_o little_a touch_n this_o sweet_a beam_n of_o heaven_n follow_v this_o little_a interior_a light_n and_o annihilate_v themselves_o before_o the_o supreme_a majesty_n of_o god_n they_o retire_v from_o it_o under_o pretence_n of_o a_o false_a humility_n to_o apply_v themselves_o to_o other_o thought_n and_o fear_v evil_a on_o purpose_n to_o lose_v time_n and_o be_v deceive_v or_o to_o lose_v themselves_o in_o their_o estate_n they_o shut_v the_o ear_n to_o god_n and_o their_o eye_n to_o the_o light_n to_o entertain_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o conception_n and_o imagination_n and_o in_o the_o consideration_n of_o themselves_o we_o see_v by_o experience_n that_o this_o way_n be_v ill_a we_o may_v easy_o observe_v that_o such_o soul_n never_o advance_v or_o if_o there_o appear_v some_o advancement_n it_o be_v but_o in_o appearance_n beside_o that_o it_o be_v always_o in_o fear_n and_o in_o a_o spirit_n of_o self-love_n never_o in_o solid_a virtue_n the_o reason_n be_v manifest_a if_o prayer_n be_v a_o elevation_n and_o union_n of_o our_o heart_n a_o speak_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n it_o be_v hard_o to_o conceive_v how_o we_o may_v advise_v to_o quit_v this_o application_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o god_n to_o torment_v her_o imagination_n and_o cast_v she_o into_o the_o consideration_n of_o exterior_a drive_v god_n out_o of_o she_o and_o out_o of_o her_o spirit_n to_o cause_v she_o own_o love_n to_o reign_v there_o her_o own_o satisfaction_n and_o will_n a_o vanity_n ordinary_a to_o such_o soul_n to_o practice_v virtue_n she_o shall_v always_o choose_v those_o where_o there_o shall_v be_v privation_n and_o self-denial_n as_o the_o most_o assure_a way_n and_o the_o most_o acceptable_a to_o god_n most_o for_o the_o honour_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o most_o conformable_a to_o his_o humane_a life_n four_o she_o shall_v pray_v to_o jesus_n christ_n to_o vouchsafe_v to_o operate_v and_o put_v into_o she_o all_o that_o he_o will_v and_o to_o annihilate_v in_o she_o all_o that_o he_o require_v to_o prevent_v in_o she_o by_o his_o light_n and_o love_n the_o time_n of_o death_n and_o judgement_n whereto_o he_o must_v annihilate_v the_o thought_n and_o judgement_n of_o man_n the_o abridgement_n of_o the_o three_o part._n chap._n fourteen_o treat_v of_o the_o dependence_n of_o the_o soul_n upon_o god_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o see_v that_o among_o christian_n even_o those_o who_o think_v they_o have_v virtue_n enough_o to_o fave_v they_o many_o deceive_v and_o altogether_o lose_v themselves_o take_v the_o shadow_n of_o virtue_n for_o the_o substance_n appearance_n for_o truth_n like_o the_o dog_n in_o the_o fable_n who_o let_v go_v the_o good_a morsel_n he_o have_v hold_v of_o to_o catch_v a_o shadow_n these_o neglect_n the_o solid_a virtue_n and_o principal_a foundation_n of_o piety_n to_o insist_v on_o certain_a exterior_a action_n which_o have_v no_o substance_n but_o in_o the_o air_n of_o imagination_n they_o exercise_v themselves_o in_o moral_a virtue_n and_o despise_v the_o christian_a they_o compose_v the_o exterior_a and_o form_v their_o demeanour_n and_o neglect_v the_o interior_a they_o fear_v to_o displease_v man_n and_o endeavour_v to_o satisfy_v their_o kindred_n and_o friend_n but_o care_v no_o more_o to_o please_v god_n than_o they_o fear_v to_o displease_v he_o they_o will_v seem_v good_a but_o care_v not_o to_o be_v so_o in_o a_o word_n in_o all_o thing_n they_o choose_v the_o most_o beautiful_a and_o best_a and_o will_v have_v nothing_o but_o what_o be_v good_a but_o for_o their_o soul_n that_o which_o be_v least_o best_a content_v they_o they_o seek_v but_o that_o which_o be_v necessary_a what_o give_v they_o great_a liberty_n and_o satisfaction_n they_o embrace_v with_o all_o their_o heart_n god_n who_o be_v truth_n be_v not_o satisfy_v with_o these_o feign_n and_o will_n that_o we_o serve_v he_o in_o spirit_n and_o truth_n he_o detest_v a_o lie_n and_o curse_n those_o that_o serve_v he_o with_o the_o mouth_n only_o if_o he_o love_v 29.13_o he_o will_v be_v belove_v and_o as_o his_o love_n be_v most_o pure_a and_o perfect_a he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o be_v such_o also_o whence_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o comprehend_v that_o to_o be_v a_o perfect_a christian_n and_o friend_n to_o god_n require_v great_a quality_n he_o must_v have_v a_o golden_a key_n that_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o king_n chamber_n he_o that_o will_v come_v to_o a_o royal_a feast_n must_v be_v clothe_v with_o a_o wedding_n garment_n 13._o lest_o he_o be_v bind_v hand_n and_o foot_n and_o cast_v into_o prison_n and_o utter_a darkness_n to_o be_v a_o perfect_a christian_a be_v not_o so_o slight_a a_o business_n as_o some_o think_v it_o it_o belong_v to_o god_n only_o to_o make_v a_o man_n just_a it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o hand_n and_o great_a than_o the_o creation_n of_o the_o world_n at_o least_o in_o this_o god_n show_v himself_o more_o powerful_a in_o his_o love_n and_o more_o admirable_a in_o his_o mercy_n therefore_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o a_o good_a and_o perfect_a christian_a we_o speak_v of_o god_n handiwork_n of_o a_o man_n worthy_a to_o be_v a_o saint_n for_o to_o be_v save_v and_o to_o be_v saint_n be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n now_o what_o ought_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o saint_n to_o be_v who_o must_v one_o day_n see_v god_n live_v with_o god_n say_v st._n bernard_n in_o his_o meditation_n and_o be_v eternal_o in_o unity_n with_o god_n what_o must_v the_o perfection_n of_o a_o soul_n be_v that_o shall_v become_v worthy_a so_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a a_o happiness_n whereto_o all_o aspire_v that_o will_v be_v save_v i_o leave_v it_o to_o their_o thought_n who_o know_v how_o to_o esteem_v efficacious_a draw_v we_o to_o god_n purity_n make_v we_o worthy_a of_o god_n and_o self-deniall_n bring_v to_o the_o fullness_n of_o god_n he_o that_o have_v god_n have_v all_o he_o be_v perfect_a and_o he_o that_o have_v not_o god_n be_v nothing_o and_o have_v nothing_o do_v what_o he_o can_v though_o he_o shall_v do_v miracle_n as_o judas_n probable_o do_v he_o can_v do_v nothing_o that_o be_v perfect_a no_o work_n worthy_a of_o heaven_n for_o it_o be_v god_n only_o that_o work_v in_o we_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o who_o be_v the_o principle_n of_o our_o merit_n which_o must_v be_v well_o note_v therefore_o he_o that_o will_v be_v save_v and_o become_v a_o perfect_a christian_a must_v aim_v only_o at_o this_o point_n all_o that_o we_o have_v propose_v serve_v hereunto_o the_o first_o thing_n demand_v be_v to_o endeavour_v to_o have_v a_o good_a foundation_n and_o a_o sincere_a uncorrupted_a interior_a to_o conduct_v we_o according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o maxim_n of_o christianity_n to_o regard_n god_n in_o all_o thing_n to_o please_v he_o or_o at_o least_o not_o to_o displease_v he_o with_o particular_a care_n to_o annihilate_v the_o spirit_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o world_n for_o they_o be_v enemy_n to_o god_n they_o can_v no_o more_o dwell_v together_o then_o jacob_n and_o esau._n after_o all_o these_o disposition_n the_o soul_n must_v depend_v upon_o god_n and_o be_v whole_o leave_v to_o his_o operation_n and_o conduct_n and_o be_v very_o vigilant_a to_o show_v herself_o faithful_a to_o correspond_v with_o the_o grace_n and_o operation_n of_o god_n and_o not_o to_o withdraw_v herself_o from_o his_o conduct_n and_o the_o order_n he_o will_v take_v with_o she_o this_o last_o point_n be_v of_o great_a consequence_n and_o deserve_v to_o be_v a_o little_a more_o insist_v upon_o for_o it_o be_v the_o last_o touch_n we_o shall_v give_v to_o the_o image_n of_o a_o perfect_a christian._n we_o must_v observe_v that_o in_o the_o order_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v not_o as_o in_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n in_o nature_n that_o which_o be_v most_o dependent_a on_o its_o cause_n be_v the_o most_o imperfect_a as_o the_o sound_n and_o voice_n which_o be_v so_o dependent_a on_o its_o cause_n that_o it_o cease_v to_o be_v when_o it_o cease_v to_o be_v produce_v in_o nature_n that_o be_v esteem_v most_o perfect_a which_o have_v the_o least_o dependence_n it_o be_v otherwise_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v most_o perfect_a which_o be_v near_a and_o the_o most_o dependent_a on_o its_o cause_n and_o principle_n god_n so_o that_o he_o that_o tend_v to_o perfection_n must_v be_v in_o a_o great_a dependence_n on_o god_n and_o not_o act_v but_o in_o this_o disposition_n and_o by_o a_o general_a resignation_n of_o himself_o to_o god_n to_o put_v and_o establish_v himself_o in_o this_o estate_n he_o must_v have_v a_o pure_a regard_n of_o god_n that_o be_v he_o must_v hold_v all_o of_o god_n and_o have_v no_o other_o object_n but_o god_n in_o his_o thought_n or_o action_n when_o he_o perceive_v any_o care_n desire_v motion_n etc._n etc._n arise_v in_o he_o which_o he_o believe_v not_o to_o be_v of_o god_n he_o must_v annihilate_v and_o renounce_v it_o protest_v to_o will_v nothing_o but_o he_o and_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o his_o divine_a will_n a_o soul_n that_o will_v live_v in_o resignation_n and_o in_o a_o true_a dependence_n on_o god_n must_v live_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o object_n that_o be_v have_v regard_n only_o to_o god_n herein_o consist_v the_o true_a dependence_n whereof_o we_o speak_v she_o must_v not_o go_v out_o of_o this_o disposition_n to_o regard_v what_o she_o do_v or_o what_o she_o shall_v do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o what_o may_v happen_v to_o she_o upon_o any_o manner_n of_o occasion_n she_o shall_v have_v all_o care_n possible_o that_o she_o enter_v not_o into_o these_o thought_n contradiction_n and_o affliction_n wherein_o she_o be_v or_o which_o may_v happen_v to_o she_o but_o she_o must_v receive_v all_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n with_o gentleness_n and_o patience_n regard_v he_o as_o attention_n in_o her_o self_n but_o feel_v her_o self_n whole_o estrange_v from_o god_n even_o in_o the_o most_o holy_a exercise_n of_o her_o vocation_n be_v in_o this_o condition_n she_o be_v
