or_o in_o his_o death_n or_o in_o other_o word_n whether_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o reward_n be_v not_o so_o ground_v upon_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n as_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n be_v upon_o his_o expiatory_a sacrifice_n and_o if_o those_o reason_n which_o we_o have_v already_o or_o shall_v hereafter_o offer_v do_v prove_v that_o in_o justice_n and_o reason_n it_o be_v so_o then_o the_o objection_n vanish_v i_o may_v add_v that_o the_o objection_n only_o speak_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o fact_n that_o there_o be_v a_o promise_v make_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n which_o no_o one_o so_o far_o as_o i_o know_v deny_v but_o it_o do_v not_o speak_v as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o right_n and_o justice_n how_o such_o a_o promise_n can_v be_v just_o and_o reasonable_o make_v without_o any_o violence_n offer_v to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n which_o be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o gospel_n be_v so_o and_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o god_n law_n do_v not_o either_o contradict_v each_o other_o or_o control_v any_o the_o law_n or_o rule_n of_o true_a justice_n or_o reason_n that_o then_o which_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n which_o be_v at_o present_a maintain_v be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o reward_n in_o the_o gospel_n to_o a_o imperfect_a obedience_n have_v never_o be_v make_v to_o man_n at_o all_o because_o it_o can_v not_o have_v be_v make_v just_o if_o the_o law_n of_o work_n give_v to_o man_n have_v never_o be_v fulfil_v by_o man_n and_o that_o the_o gospel-promise_a be_v grant_v in_o consideration_n that_o our_o saviour_n fulfil_v that_o law_n and_o to_o this_o the_o objection_n so_o call_v be_v real_o no_o objection_n at_o all_o it_o be_v confess_v indeed_o that_o the_o eternal_a life_n promise_v to_o believer_n in_o the_o gospel_n will_v be_v attend_v with_o a_o happiness_n inconceivable_o great_a than_o the_o eternal_a life_n promise_v in_o the_o law_n to_o adam_n and_o it_o may_v be_v thereupon_o surmise_v that_o the_o reward_v promise_v in_o the_o gospel_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o obedience_n require_v in_o the_o law_n and_o if_o it_o have_v not_o that_o then_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n of_o believer_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n to_o the_o law_n to_o which_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o at_o present_a than_o this_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v agree_v that_o our_o saviour_n by_o his_o death_n take_v away_o death_n the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o make_v good_a such_o his_o achievement_n by_o a_o resurrection_n now_o the_o life_n after_o the_o resurrection_n be_v a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n not_o in_o a_o natural_a i_o speak_v the_o apostle_n word_n and_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o a_o life_n in_o a_o spiritual_a body_n be_v a_o more_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n than_o a_o life_n in_o a_o natural_a body_n and_o that_o in_o multitude_n of_o circumstance_n it_o must_v needs_o differ_v from_o it_o perhaps_o in_o so_o many_o that_o it_o may_v be_v as_o inconceivable_a to_o we_o now_o as_o the_o future_a happiness_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o yet_o this_o refine_a and_o exalt_a life_n be_v no_o good_a argument_n that_o it_o be_v not_o purchase_v by_o our_o saviour_n death_n nor_o that_o such_o his_o death_n have_v no_o eye_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n in_o such_o purchase_n and_o so_o say_v we_o though_o the_o happiness_n of_o the_o bless_a be_v great_a vast_o great_a than_o what_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o work_n promise_v to_o adam_n upon_o his_o obedience_n yet_o that_o can_v never_o make_v it_o out_o that_o such_o happiness_n be_v not_o the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n or_o that_o such_o his_o obedience_n be_v not_o a_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n of_o work_n it_o may_v indeed_o convince_v we_o of_o the_o supereminent_a dignity_n of_o his_o person_n and_o of_o the_o inconceivable_a value_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o by_o be_v purchase_v by_o he_o derive_v such_o its_o value_n from_o such_o his_o dignity_n as_o we_o observe_v before_o and_o which_o be_v direct_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n it_o may_v furthermore_o convince_v we_o that_o the_o reward_n of_o believer_n be_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o saviour_n obedience_n make_v over_o to_o they_o but_o not_o a_o reward_n that_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o their_o own_o at_o the_o very_o best_a imperfect_a righteousness_n i_o know_v very_o well_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v deny_v by_o many_o divine_n and_o other_o learned_a man_n and_o those_o too_o not_o only_o such_o who_o do_v utter_o deny_v that_o god_n bestow_v salvation_n upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n and_o purchase_n but_o even_o by_o the_o generality_n of_o those_o who_o yet_o do_v ascribe_v the_o salvation_n of_o man_n to_o such_o purchase_n and_o merit_n what_o reason_n they_o offer_v for_o such_o their_o denial_n we_o shall_v speak_v to_o hereafter_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n we_o shall_v go_v on_o to_o make_v good_a the_o imputation_n against_o each_o party_n that_o deny_v it_o and_o after_o that_o shall_v show_v that_o the_o reason_n of_o such_o their_o denial_n have_v not_o that_o weight_n which_o they_o seem_v to_o have_v 1._o and_o first_o we_o shall_v speak_v to_o they_o who_o do_v not_o bare_o acknowledge_v but_o even_o contend_v that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n be_v obtain_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n that_o be_v in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o man_n of_o who_o we_o now_o speak_v do_v maintain_v that_o in_o order_n to_o man_n redemption_n our_o saviour_n die_v for_o man_n sin_n and_o that_o by_o such_o his_o death_n he_o puchase_v for_o man_n a_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a wage_n of_o such_o sin_n now_o what_o they_o so_o maintain_v we_o believe_v to_o be_v true_a and_o be_v ready_a to_o join_v hand_n with_o they_o to_o make_v it_o good_a against_o all_o the_o adversary_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n so_o far_o therefore_o we_o be_v agree_v but_o then_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o our_o saviour_n can_v possible_o suffer_v for_o man_n sin_n if_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o he_o for_o in_o order_n to_o his_o suffering_n for_o man_n sin_n he_o must_v take_v upon_o he_o such_o sin_n and_o the_o take_n upon_o he_o man_n sin_n be_v the_o have_v man_n sin_n account_v as_o his_o own_o that_o be_v in_o effect_n and_o in_o other_o word_n the_o have_v man_n sin_n impute_v to_o he_o and_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n how_o can_v man_n have_v any_o pretence_n of_o benefit_n from_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n if_o the_o merit_n of_o such_o suffering_n be_v not_o impute_v to_o man_n for_o without_o such_o imputation_n the_o merit_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v can_v only_o belong_v to_o the_o saviour_n himself_o it_o be_v evident_a therefore_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v in_o short_a but_o may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n that_o they_o who_o assert_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n in_o man_n stead_n do_v therefore_o entitle_v man_n to_o the_o benefit_n of_o such_o expiation_n because_o man_n sin_n be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n suffering_n at_o least_o impute_v to_o man._n thing_n therefore_o stand_v thus_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o expiation_n it_o may_v be_v reasonable_o and_o further_o demand_v why_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n or_o obedience_n may_v not_o as_o warrantable_o be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o man_n sin_n may_v be_v impute_v to_o his_o saviour_n or_o why_o the_o eternal_a happiness_n which_o be_v assign_v as_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n by_o the_o law_n may_v not_o be_v bestow_v upon_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n obedience_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n as_o well_o as_o a_o release_n from_o punishment_n may_v be_v grant_v to_o man_n in_o consideration_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o saviour_n punishment_n be_v impute_v to_o man_n for_o there_o be_v the_o very_a selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n salvation_n that_o there_o be_v that_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o our_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o such_o saviour_n condemnation_n and_o there_o be_v the_o selfsame_a reason_n why_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n obtain_v eternal_a life_n as_o there_o be_v
if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v absolute_o just_a and_o necessary_a then_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o god_n do_v in_o his_o counsel_n design_n and_o in_o his_o wisdom_n appoint_v a_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n for_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n the_o design_n of_o pardon_n must_v be_v antecedent_n to_o thâ—_n design_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v as_o it_o be_v laâ—_n down_o both_o just_a and_o necessary_a god_n design_n of_o pardon_n go_v counter_a to_o this_o law_n shall_v seem_v to_o be_v unjust_a for_o how_o can_v he_o justâ—_n design_n to_o pardon_v that_o which_o in_o justice_n anâ—_n necessity_n he_o stand_v oblige_v to_o punish_v now_o to_o this_o several_a thing_n may_v be_v answer_v as_o 1._o first_o that_o god_n do_v never_o design_n 〈◊〉_d pardon_n sin_n but_o only_o in_o and_o through_o a_o saviour_n and_o how_o far_o such_o his_o design_n undeâ—_n such_o a_o restriction_n and_o limitation_n be_v juâ—â—_n be_v very_o much_o the_o business_n of_o that_o part_n of_o thâ—_n discourse_n which_o in_o its_o place_n be_v to_o follow_v anâ—_n therefore_o must_v not_o be_v forestall_v here_o 2._o that_o notwithstanding_o a_o saviour_n yeâ—_n god_n do_v never_o pardon_v any_o sinful_a creature_n all_o the_o sinner_n that_o we_o know_v be_v the_o falâ—_n angel_n and_o men._n what_o the_o scripture_n acquaint_v we_o with_o concern_v the_o first_o we_o know_v well_o enough_o and_o among_o such_o thing_n 〈◊〉_d know_v also_o that_o it_o give_v we_o a_o account_n 〈◊〉_d the_o punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o foâ—_n man_n those_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v aâ—_n last_o in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n do_v yet_o in_o this_o world_n suffer_v loss_n anâ—_n cross_n and_o pain_n and_o disease_n and_o death_n all_o which_o be_v undoubted_a punishment_n of_o sinâ—_n and_o for_o the_o rest_n who_o shall_v by_o a_o final_a impenitence_n reject_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o saviour_n purchase_n beside_o the_o calamity_n which_o they_o suffer_v in_o common_a with_o the_o good_a in_o this_o world_n the_o scripture_n do_v acquaint_v we_o sufficient_o with_o their_o doom_n in_o the_o next_o so_o that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n that_o punishment_n be_v the_o necessary_a reward_n of_o sin_n because_o all_o sinner_n have_v do_v and_o shall_v suffer_v punishment_n then_o god_n design_v of_o a_o saviour_n for_o mankind_n in_o order_n to_o their_o pardon_n do_v not_o take_v off_o the_o force_n of_o such_o argument_n because_o notwithstanding_o such_o his_o design_n and_o such_o saviour_n no_o sinner_n whatsoever_o do_v or_o ever_o will_v go_v unpunished_a 3._o but_o then_o three_o it_o be_v a_o mistake_n that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n from_o punishment_n be_v the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a design_n in_o god_n counsel_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n for_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v hereafter_o see_v chap._n 12._o the_o business_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v be_v to_o bring_v back_o mankind_n to_o his_o father_n kingdom_n who_o have_v be_v draw_v into_o a_o revolt_n from_o his_o dominion_n and_o jurisdiction_n by_o the_o solicitation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o have_v thereby_o put_v a_o slight_a upon_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o so_o in_o some_o sense_n lessen_v the_o extent_n of_o his_o kingdom_n now_o those_o who_o our_o saviour_n shall_v so_o bring_v back_o to_o their_o allegiance_n by_o restore_v they_o to_o their_o lose_a holiness_n shall_v indeed_o be_v save_v but_o then_o their_o salvation_n be_v a_o consequence_n of_o their_o return_n to_o holiness_n and_o so_o be_v not_o proper_o the_o design_n of_o god_n send_v a_o saviour_n but_o the_o consequence_n of_o the_o success_n of_o such_o design_n chap._n ii_o the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a or_o unconditional_a pardon_n no_o nor_o yet_o a_o arbitrary_a pardon_n the_o next_o and_o second_o proposition_n offer_v to_o be_v make_v good_a in_o order_n to_o our_o main_a design_n be_v this_o that_o the_o gospel_n hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n which_o proposition_n i_o therefore_o lie_v down_o here_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v introductive_a to_o some_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v but_o also_o to_o obviate_v the_o conceit_n of_o those_o man_n who_o think_v they_o do_v sufficient_o wipe_v away_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n may_v without_o any_o more_o ado_n pardon_v such_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o free_a grace_n 1._o but_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n that_o what_o god_n may_v do_v and_o what_o he_o have_v declare_v he_o will_v do_v be_v two_o very_a different_a and_o distinct_a thing_n though_o therefore_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o god_n may_v grant_v we_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n yet_o if_o in_o those_o very_a revelation_n in_o which_o he_o have_v discover_v to_o we_o his_o intention_n of_o pardon_v we_o he_o do_v express_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v so_o it_o will_v be_v proper_a and_o modest_a in_o we_o to_o acquiesce_v in_o what_o he_o so_o tell_v we_o rather_o than_o to_o raise_v in_o our_o imagination_n conceit_a possibility_n which_o do_v direct_o contradict_v such_o his_o declaration_n 2._o but_o second_o he_o who_o bring_v we_o the_o gospel-dispensation_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v in_o that_o dispensation_n require_v our_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o such_o our_o pardon_n now_o if_o repentance_n be_v a_o condition_n of_o the_o pardon_n then_o for_o that_o reason_n alone_o the_o pardon_n can_v be_v absolute_a because_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n be_v a_o inconditional_a pardon_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o same_o pardon_n shall_v be_v a_o conditional_a and_o a_o inconditional_a pardon_n too_o 3._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n fight_v direct_o against_o all_o that_o we_o have_v say_v under_o our_o last_o head_n concern_v the_o necessary_a justice_n of_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o till_o all_o that_o be_v wipe_v away_o we_o may_v upon_o those_o ground_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o sort_n of_o pardon_n for_o it_o look_v a_o little_a too_o harsh_a and_o that_o too_o to_o natural_a reason_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n will_v be_v reconcile_v to_o the_o enemy_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o that_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o mere_a mercy_n and_o compassion_n and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o his_o be_v so_o he_o will_v throw_v away_o all_o consideration_n of_o his_o justice_n which_o in_o this_o case_n we_o may_v adventure_v to_o call_v his_o natural_a displeasure_n 4._o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v or_o allow_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n then_o we_o must_v also_o allow_v that_o it_o may_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n whether_o a_o man_n have_v be_v the_o best_a or_o the_o worst_a man_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n in_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v extend_v to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o the_o other_o for_o let_v what_o reason_n soever_o be_v assign_v why_o it_o may_v not_o and_o that_o very_a reason_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v will_v prove_v the_o forgiveness_n not_o to_o be_v absolute_a for_o that_o forgiveness_n can_v be_v so_o that_o be_v limit_v or_o restrain_v by_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o 5._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n do_v throw_v a_o slur_n upon_o god_n wisdom_n no_o less_o than_o it_o do_v so_o upon_o his_o justice_n for_o the_o law_n be_v his_o against_o which_o we_o have_v transgress_v and_o he_o have_v in_o that_o very_a law_n threaten_v vengeance_n upon_o such_o as_o shall_v transgress_v it_o if_o after_o the_o transgression_n he_o shall_v grant_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n to_o such_o transgression_n he_o will_v by_o such_o a_o pardon_n as_o much_o void_a and_o annul_v the_o law_n as_o he_o have_v by_o his_o threaten_v establish_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o so_o it_o may_v come_v to_o the_o same_o pass_n as_o to_o the_o final_a event_n whether_o he_o have_v make_v any_o law_n or_o no._n for_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n not_o to_o make_v a_o law_n and_o not_o to_o execute_v it_o and_o therefore_o st._n paul_n pointblank_o to_o our_o purpose_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o roman_n the_o fifth_z and_o six_o verse_n that_o if_o god_n shall_v not_o execute_v vengeance_n he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o that_o also_o he_o can_v not_o judge_v the_o world_n and_o we_o may_v add_v that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o consider_v the_o contrariety_n that_o will_v be_v between_o his_o practice_n
such_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n as_o we_o ought_v in_o our_o prosecution_n of_o the_o first_o of_o which_o thing_n i_o will_v desire_v all_o christian_n serious_o to_o consider_v that_o they_o ought_v the_o more_o hearty_o and_o devout_o to_o praise_n god_n our_o saviour_n that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o take_v upon_o he_o our_o flesh_n in_o order_n to_o our_o redemption_n because_o our_o condition_n by_o reason_n of_o our_o sin_n be_v so_o desperate_a and_o forlorn_a that_o neither_o our_o own_o repentance_n nor_o our_o own_o punishment_n no_o nor_o the_o punishment_n or_o interposition_n of_o the_o angel_n can_v ever_o have_v redeem_v we_o from_o that_o curse_n which_o we_o by_o such_o our_o sin_n have_v bring_v upon_o ourselves_o for_o as_o for_o ourselves_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o we_o be_v less_o able_a to_o return_v to_o our_o innocence_n after_o we_o have_v sin_v than_o we_o be_v to_o retain_v our_o innocence_n before_o we_o have_v lose_v it_o for_o every_o sin_n as_o our_o sad_a experience_n may_v easy_o inform_v we_o weaken_v our_o ability_n to_o resist_v sin_n and_o it_o be_v far_o more_o easy_a to_o preserve_v our_o innocence_n than_o to_o restore_v it_o and_o then_o when_o our_o ability_n be_v make_v weak_a and_o our_o business_n be_v become_v great_a we_o may_v easy_o judge_v that_o such_o our_o business_n be_v very_o likely_a to_o go_v undo_v for_o which_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o for_o several_a other_o former_o mention_v we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o when_o we_o have_v once_o bring_v ourselves_o into_o a_o sinful_a and_o for_o that_o reason_n into_o a_o miserable_a condition_n we_o have_v by_o the_o same_o mean_n put_v it_o out_o of_o our_o power_n to_o redeem_v ourselves_o from_o such_o sin_n and_o from_o such_o misery_n and_o it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o no_o man_n ever_o be_v or_o will_v beâ—_n able_a so_o to_o do_v as_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o all_o man_n be_v mortal_a for_o death_n be_v the_o wage_n of_o sin_n and_o as_o the_o experiment_n have_v pass_v the_o test_n that_o mankind_n can_v save_v itself_o from_o its_o sin_n so_o it_o have_v as_o good_a as_o do_v so_o that_o neither_o can_v the_o angel_n save_v it_o for_o if_o they_o can_v than_o they_o will_v in_o nature_n first_o have_v do_v such_o a_o kindness_n for_o themselves_o but_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o fall_a angel_n discover_v to_o we_o by_o revelation_n assure_v we_o that_o there_o be_v no_o possibility_n for_o they_o to_o do_v such_o a_o kindness_n for_o themselves_o and_o then_o reason_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o neither_o can_v they_o do_v it_o for_o man._n herein_o then_o be_v the_o love_n of_o our_o saviour_n manifest_v and_o mighty_o enhance_v that_o he_o be_v please_v to_o step_v in_o for_o our_o rescue_n when_o we_o can_v discover_v no_o other_o way_n for_o our_o escape_n and_o if_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o than_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o our_o great_a praise_n and_o acknowledgement_n be_v due_a to_o he_o who_o alone_o can_v bring_v we_o salvation_n and_o who_o alone_o have_v bring_v it_o and_o so_o have_v not_o refuse_v we_o that_o mercy_n which_o he_o alone_o be_v qualify_v to_o bestow_v 2._o we_o ought_v to_o magnify_v and_o praise_v our_o saviour_n not_o only_o because_o he_o be_v please_v to_o undertake_v our_o redemption_n when_o he_o alone_o can_v of_o life_n from_o all_o which_o and_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o that_o may_v be_v offer_v both_o from_o reason_n and_o from_o revelation_n some_o of_o which_o thing_n we_o have_v already_o speak_v to_o and_o some_o of_o which_o we_o shall_v have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o hereafter_o we_o may_v be_v not_o only_o inform_v but_o assure_v that_o the_o great_a merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n make_v for_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n do_v arise_v from_o hence_o that_o his_o divinity_n be_v personal_o unite_v to_o that_o body_n which_o undergo_v such_o death_n or_o speak_v and_o 1._o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o appear_v plain_o that_o though_o our_o saviour_n make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n yet_o that_o such_o his_o purchase_n shall_v not_o be_v full_o make_v over_o to_o we_o till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n that_o he_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n his_o resurrection_n be_v a_o demonstration_n for_o because_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n and_o because_o he_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o not_o for_o his_o own_o and_o because_o after_o such_o his_o death_n he_o rise_v again_o and_o because_o such_o his_o resurrection_n be_v a_o discharge_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o those_o sin_n for_o which_o he_o die_v i_o say_v from_o all_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o accomplish_v his_o design_a purchase_n that_o be_v he_o make_v good_a his_o expiation_n by_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n but_o then_o on_o the_o other_o side_n because_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o we_o be_v not_o redeem_v from_o the_o curse_n or_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n till_o we_o be_v redeem_v from_o death_n and_o because_o we_o be_v not_o redeem_v from_o death_n till_o we_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a that_o be_v till_o our_o own_o resurrection_n therefore_o it_o be_v as_o evident_a that_o till_o such_o our_o resurrection_n we_o be_v not_o put_v into_o the_o possession_n of_o such_o his_o purchase_n and_o therefore_o strict_o speak_v no_o man_n be_v he_o who_o he_o will_v be_v â—actually_o justify_v in_o this_o life_n for_o because_o every_o man_n that_o must_v be_v save_v it_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o imprudent_a at_o least_o to_o refuse_v to_o admit_v our_o own_o salvation_n in_o and_o by_o he_o and_o it_o be_v a_o doubt_n at_o least_o whether_o they_o who_o deny_v his_o expiation_n the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n in_o
he_o do_v not_o deserve_v that_o death_n which_o he_o suffer_v but_o then_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n do_v therefore_o permit_v he_o to_o undergo_v such_o a_o cruel_a and_o hard_a treatment_n that_o he_o may_v be_v a_o example_n of_o patience_n submission_n and_o resignation_n to_o all_o man_n in_o any_o circumstance_n under_o which_o they_o shall_v be_v bring_v by_o god_n providence_n to_o be_v crucify_v and_o slay_v by_o the_o determinate_a counsel_n and_o foreknowledge_n of_o god_n for_o so_o st._n peter_n express_o tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o of_o the_o act_n and_o the_o twenty_o three_o verse_n and_o again_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o the_o four_o of_o the_o act_n the_o twenty_o seven_o and_o twenty_o eight_o verse_n that_o herod_n and_o pontius_n pilate_n with_o the_o give_v a_o example_n to_o mankind_n under_o any_o affliction_n of_o a_o entire_a resignation_n to_o the_o counsel_n and_o will_n of_o god_n in_o all_o case_n whatsoever_o 4._o but_o then_o in_o the_o last_o place_n it_o may_v be_v reasonable_o demand_v how_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o these_o selfsame_a suffering_n this_o selfsame_a death_n of_o our_o saviour_n do_v then_o become_v unjust_a when_o they_o be_v affirm_v to_o have_v be_v undergo_v by_o he_o for_o the_o expiation_n of_o man_n sin_n they_o be_v just_a because_o he_o undergo_v they_o willing_o and_o they_o be_v honourable_a because_o they_o be_v exemplary_a and_o we_o be_v sure_o they_o be_v merciful_a and_o charitable_a if_o they_o be_v expiatory_a and_o then_o shall_v what_o be_v just_a in_o itself_o and_o honourable_a because_o it_o be_v design_v for_o a_o example_n or_o for_o any_o other_o end_n i_o say_v shall_v such_o a_o thing_n therefore_o become_v unjust_a because_o it_o be_v over_o and_o above_o design_v for_o a_o charity_n and_o a_o mercy_n the_o same_o thing_n we_o know_v may_v be_v direct_v to_o more_o end_n and_o purpose_n than_o one_o and_o those_o several_a end_n and_o purpose_n may_v all_o be_v good_a and_o warrantable_a and_o where_o they_o be_v so_o there_o if_o the_o thing_n be_v good_a and_o just_a in_o itself_o we_o may_v in_o reason_n rest_v satisfy_v that_o one_o of_o those_o good_a endswill_n no_o more_o vitiate_v and_o corrupt_v it_o than_o any_o other_o end_v will_n if_o therefore_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v just_a without_o be_v design_v for_o a_o expiation_n it_o will_v remain_v just_a still_o though_o it_o be_v design_v for_o aâ—_n expiation_n for_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n which_o be_v undoubted_o include_v in_o such_o expiation_n be_v most_o very_o tragical_a expression_n and_o some_o of_o those_o expresnon_n so_o indecent_a and_o irreverent_a to_o say_v no_o worse_o as_o not_o fit_a to_o be_v mention_v exclaim_v against_o the_o injustice_n of_o the_o expiation_n it_o be_v notorious_a that_o they_o quit_v their_o reason_n and_o fly_v to_o harangue_n that_o be_v they_o hope_v in_o this_o case_n to_o prevail_v by_o their_o rhetoric_n rather_o than_o by_o their_o argument_n for_o i_o can_v hardly_o persuade_v myself_o to_o believe_v they_o so_o shortsighted_a as_o not_o to_o perceive_v that_o any_o argument_n against_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v not_o contradict_v such_o their_o own_o position_n which_o maintain_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n and_o passion_n one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v remark_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v proceed_v and_o that_o be_v that_o because_o the_o objection_n under_o this_o head_n be_v only_o lay_v against_o the_o justice_n but_o not_o at_o all_o against_o the_o value_n merit_n or_o extensive_a influence_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n therefore_o i_o have_v precise_o stick_v to_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n without_o mix_v other_o thing_n with_o it_o relate_v to_o the_o expiation_n that_o be_v i_o have_v here_o only_o assert_v the_o justice_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n 2._o the_o second_o objection_n against_o our_o saviour_n expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o death_n stand_v thus_o and_o that_o be_v that_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o he_o have_v power_n over_o his_o own_o life_n that_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o lay_v down_o that_o life_n and_o that_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o accept_v it_o yet_o all_o this_o will_v amount_v but_o to_o part_v of_o payment_n for_o first_o the_o death_n that_o we_o deserve_v by_o our_o sin_n be_v eternal_a but_o that_o which_o he_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n be_v but_o transient_a and_o temporal_a it_o be_v confess_v that_o as_o the_o socinian_o do_v deny_v the_o expiation_n so_o do_v they_o also_o a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n but_o yet_o that_o do_v not_o at_o all_o take_v off_o from_o the_o â—orce_n of_o the_o objection_n because_o if_o they_o who_o maintain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n do_v also_o assert_v a_o eternity_n of_o punishment_n it_o be_v sufficient_a for_o their_o confutation_n to_o show_v that_o their_o several_a doctrine_n do_v contradict_v and_o so_o overthrow_v each_o other_o the_o objection_n then_o be_v so_o far_o lay_v right_a it_o go_v on_o further_a thus_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n be_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o of_o thousand_o of_o million_o of_o myriad_o nay_o of_o multitude_n of_o myriad_n but_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o the_o death_n of_o one_o so_o that_o if_o either_o we_o consider_v the_o extent_n of_o our_o gild_n or_o the_o malignity_n of_o it_o it_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n seem_v reasonable_a and_o therefore_o neither_o just_a that_o the_o single_a death_n of_o our_o saviour_n shall_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o proportionats_n expiation_n of_o it_o nor_o indeed_o will_v it_o according_a to_o those_o who_o make_v the_o objection_n who_o though_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o one_o place_n that_o in_o he_o dwell_v all_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o godhead_n bodily_a and_o in_o another_o place_n that_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o god_n he_o think_v it_o no_o robbery_n to_o be_v equal_a
that_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n shall_v be_v impute_v to_o man_n in_o order_n to_o man_n release_n from_o death_n that_o be_v imputation_n be_v as_o reasonable_a and_o as_o justifiable_a in_o one_o case_n as_o in_o the_o other_o for_o they_o both_o stand_v upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o foot_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n he_o who_o throw_v down_o one_o throw_v down_o both_o and_o therefore_o whoever_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n to_o man_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o imputation_n of_o man_n sin_n to_o our_o saviour_n and_o all_o the_o consequence_n of_o it_o or_o in_o other_o word_n he_o who_o reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o imputation_n do_v by_o so_o do_v reject_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o expiation_n likewise_o 2._o those_o man_n who_o do_v so_o far_o maintain_v man_n salvation_n to_o depend_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n alone_o as_o to_o deny_v impute_v righteousness_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o salvation_n do_v not_o seem_v to_o i_o sufficient_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n 1._o the_o death_n itself_o and_o 2._o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n in_o submit_v himself_o to_o such_o a_o death_n now_o because_o death_n be_v proper_o speak_v what_o he_o undergo_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o man_n sin_n for_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n do_v express_o assign_v death_n as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n hence_o it_o be_v as_o i_o conceive_v that_o most_o of_o those_o who_o have_v discourse_v of_o man_n redemption_n for_o the_o sake_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n have_v place_v the_o merit_n of_o the_o purchase_n only_o in_o such_o death_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n have_v whole_o lay_v aside_o all_o consideration_n of_o the_o merit_n of_o that_o obedience_n concern_v our_o saviour_n therefore_o lay_v aside_o at_o present_a all_o scheme_n of_o humane_a reason_v or_o contrivance_n we_o shall_v entire_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o they_o for_o such_o instruction_n take_v we_o notice_n therefore_o that_o they_o inform_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v deliver_v to_o death_n by_o the_o determinate_a counsel_n and_o foreknowledge_n of_o god_n so_o st._n peter_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o second_o of_o act_n and_o twenty_o three_o verse_n and_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o other_o place_n from_o which_o we_o infer_v that_o the_o suffering_n and_o must_v make_v a_o opposition_n between_o his_o death_n and_o his_o obedience_n and_o to_o ascribe_v man_n happiness_n to_o his_o death_n but_o not_o to_o his_o obedience_n do_v make_v such_o a_o opposition_n but_o i_o say_v if_o there_o must_v be_v a_o opposition_n make_v between_o they_o it_o seem_v much_o more_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n nay_o indeed_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o ascribe_v such_o merit_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n than_o to_o his_o death_n for_o it_o be_v the_o voice_n of_o natural_a justice_n that_o duty_n and_o obedience_n may_v deserve_v a_o reward_n but_o it_o be_v a_o strain_n beyond_o conceit_n that_o punishment_n shall_v do_v so_o too_o for_o if_o that_o be_v allow_v than_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v just_o meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n as_o well_o as_o obedience_n to_o the_o command_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o at_o long_o run_v it_o will_v come_v to_o the_o same_o event_n to_o break_v the_o law_n as_o to_o keep_v it_o but_o because_o that_o can_v be_v allow_v therefore_o if_o people_n will_v have_v a_o opposition_n in_o the_o case_n where_o the_o scripture_n have_v make_v none_o we_o shall_v rather_o ascribe_v man_n eternal_a happiness_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n than_o to_o the_o death_n itself_o and_o then_o if_o our_o eternal_a happiness_n may_v be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n in_o one_o case_n why_o may_v it_o not_o be_v so_o in_o more_o for_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o a_o believer_n may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o death_n he_o may_v be_v interest_v in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n too_o since_o then_o in_o the_o present_a case_n it_o be_v allow_v that_o a_o believer_n have_v his_o interest_n by_o imputation_n in_o the_o first_o case_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o he_o may_v and_o consider_v what_o have_v already_o be_v say_v that_o he_o must_v have_v it_o so_o in_o the_o last_o that_o be_v in_o a_o few_o word_n that_o the_o obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n both_o in_o his_o life_n and_o in_o his_o death_n must_v purchase_v for_o man_n that_o happiness_n which_o by_o the_o tenor_n of_o justice_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o appropriate_v reward_n of_o obedience_n it_o be_v evident_a then_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n for_o which_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n may_v belong_v to_o believer_n the_o merit_n of_o his_o obedience_n may_v do_v so_o too_o and_o that_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o do_v therefore_o belong_v to_o they_o because_o they_o be_v impute_v to_o they_o our_o next_o business_n must_v be_v with_o those_o man_n who_o deny_v all_o imputation_n whatsoever_o and_o therefore_o neither_o allow_v the_o merit_n of_o his_o life_n or_o death_n to_o have_v any_o thing_n to_o do_v in_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o large_o discourse_v of_o the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o death_n our_o only_a business_n at_o present_a will_v be_v to_o inquire_v concern_v the_o purchase_n make_v by_o his_o obedience_n and_o because_o the_o man_n we_o have_v now_o to_o do_v with_o do_v deny_v all_o imputation_n of_o what_o our_o saviour_n do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o therefore_o we_o shall_v lay_v down_o and_o attempt_v the_o saviour_n obedience_n 3._o but_o yet_o in_o what_o be_v now_o to_o follow_v we_o shall_v find_v that_o his_o mercy_n have_v not_o stop_v here_o because_o in_o the_o three_o place_n he_o will_v in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n endow_v man_n with_o a_o perfect_a and_o inherent_a holiness_n by_o which_o i_o mean_v such_o a_o holy_a angelical_a and_o withal_o durable_a frame_n of_o spirit_n that_o shall_v for_o ever_o secure_v he_o from_o all_o possible_a sin_n and_o shall_v for_o ever_o engage_v he_o in_o a_o vigorous_a and_o cheerful_a discharge_n of_o all_o holy_a duty_n and_o in_o so_o do_v shall_v both_o accompany_v and_o secure_v his_o happiness_n to_o all_o eternity_n for_o though_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o believer_n do_v by_o the_o communication_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o spirit_n arrive_v to_o a_o degree_n of_o such_o a_o holiness_n in_o this_o life_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v also_o that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o imperfect_a degree_n for_o it_o be_v not_o vigorous_a nor_o uniform_a nor_o constant_a but_o irresolute_a and_o weak_a and_o therefore_o have_v its_o frequent_a intermission_n and_o fail_n but_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o what_o be_v to_o follow_v the_o holiness_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o glory_n be_v like_o their_o happiness_n firm_a last_a and_o immutable_a and_o therefore_o will_v be_v find_v to_o be_v a_o gift_n to_o follow_v we_o lay_v it_o down_o first_o that_o god_n by_o his_o almighty_a power_n have_v make_v the_o world_n and_o all_o particular_a being_n in_o it_o have_v by_o virtue_n of_o such_o his_o break_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o his_o contradict_v the_o vindictive_a part_n that_o be_v we_o shall_v suppose_v he_o to_o break_v both_o part_n of_o the_o law_n proceed_v to_o our_o 2._o second_o proposition_n which_o be_v that_o the_o holiness_n of_o those_o who_o shall_v inherit_v eternal_a life_n and_o happiness_n do_v not_o come_v from_o themselves_o nor_o be_v either_o the_o archievement_n or_o fruit_n of_o their_o own_o power_n this_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a of_o because_o a_o clean_a thing_n can_v come_v out_o of_o a_o unclean_a and_o all_o man_n here_o be_v unclean_a because_o all_o man_n be_v sinner_n and_o since_o man_n in_o his_o innocence_n do_v not_o keep_v himself_o holy_a it_o be_v unreasonable_a to_o expect_v that_o after_o the_o fall_n when_o man_n ability_n be_v lessen_v that_o any_o man_n shall_v make_v himself_o so_o and_o we_o be_v moreover_o assure_v that_o no_o man_n do_v make_v himself_o so_o because_o all_o man_n do_v die_v and_o we_o be_v further_o assure_v that_o no_o man_n can_v carry_v any_o more_o of_o his_o own_o holiness_n with_o he_o into_o another_o world_n than_o what_o he_o be_v owner_n of_o in_o this_o and_o last_o we_o be_v infallible_o assure_v that_o no_o man_n can_v secure_v to_o himself_o a_o holiness_n to_o eternity_n which_o he_o have_v not_o from_o which_o thing_n run_v over_o in_o short_a we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v that_o that_o holiness_n which_o shall_v for_o ever_o attend_v those_o of_o mankind_n who_o shall_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n be_v not_o their_o own_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n but_o it_o need_v not_o and_o therefore_o 3._o since_o that_o holiness_n with_o which_o man_n shall_v be_v endow_v in_o heaven_n own_o holiness_n to_o another_o for_o upon_o such_o supposition_n whatever_o they_o shall_v contribute_v towards_o the_o perfect_a of_o another_o creature_n holiness_n will_v be_v so_o much_o pare_v off_o from_o their_o own_o and_o so_o a_o defect_n of_o their_o own_o holiness_n will_v be_v the_o consequence_n of_o that_o other_o perfection_n and_o a_o abatement_n at_o least_o if_o not_o the_o loss_n of_o their_o own_o happiness_n a_o consequence_n of_o such_o defect_n but_o than_o it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n to_o conceive_v that_o one_o creature_n can_v make_v over_o its_o own_o inherent_a holiness_n to_o another_o and_o it_o be_v as_o vain_a a_o thing_n to_o think_v that_o it_o can_v bestow_v on_o that_o other_o a_o holiness_n which_o it_o have_v not_o to_o bestow_v and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o have_v no_o holiness_n but_o it_o be_v own_o but_o neither_o shall_v i_o pursue_v this_o any_o far_a because_o i_o shall_v at_o one_o view_v offer_v a_o short_a prospect_n of_o all_o that_o have_v be_v already_o lay_v down_o in_o order_n to_o make_v it_o good_a that_o our_o saviour_n have_v make_v provision_n that_o believer_n shall_v be_v endow_v with_o a_o indefectible_a holiness_n in_o a_o future_a and_o happy_a life_n take_v we_o notice_n therefore_o that_o as_o a_o gospel-salvation_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o not_o only_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n but_o the_o reward_n of_o righteousness_n too_o so_o the_o reward_n of_o righteousness_n as_o the_o gospel_n and_o as_o he_o who_o be_v both_o the_o author_n of_o that_o gospel_n and_o of_o that_o reward_n do_v set_v it_o forth_o be_v to_o be_v eternal_a and_o everlasting_a now_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o heaven_n and_o happiness_n be_v in_o itself_o the_o just_a reward_n of_o duty_n and_o obedience_n yet_o it_o can_v be_v so_o free_o grant_v that_o a_o eternity_n of_o happiness_n be_v so_o unless_o that_o duty_n or_o obedience_n to_o which_o that_o happiness_n be_v assign_v be_v eternal_a also_o and_o the_o reason_n why_o such_o a_o thing_n can_v be_v grant_v be_v ground_v upon_o matter_n of_o fact_n and_o that_o matter_n of_o fact_n authorize_v by_o god_n own_o judicial_a proceed_n for_o we_o may_v safe_o affirm_v that_o the_o fall_v angel_n be_v once_o holy_a and_o we_o may_v affirm_v it_o so_o much_o the_o more_o safe_o because_o be_v in_o their_o nature_n creature_n capable_a of_o so_o noble_a a_o qualification_n there_o can_v no_o doubt_n be_v make_v but_o that_o they_o come_v forth_o such_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o most_o holy_a creator_n though_o the_o same_o ver_fw-la 26_o &_o 30._o the_o ten_o ver_fw-la 40._o the_o seventeen_o ver_fw-la 31._o the_o ten_o to_o the_o roman_n ver_fw-la 9_o the_o first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n chap._n 6._o compare_v with_o their_o context_n not_o so_o categorical_a which_o yet_o ascribe_v his_o resurrection_n to_o himself_o such_o be_v that_o in_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o st._n john_n v._o 19_o destroy_v this_o temple_n and_o in_o three_o day_n i_o will_v raise_v it_o up_o and_o so_o again_o in_o the_o ten_o of_o st._n john_n v._o 18._o no_o man_n take_v it_o from_o i_o but_o i_o lay_v it_o down_o of_o myself_o i_o have_v power_n to_o lay_v it_o down_o and_o i_o have_v power_n to_o take_v it_o again_o now_o as_o we_o make_v it_o out_o just_a now_o that_o after_o the_o expiation_n before_o we_o be_v both_o the_o priest_n and_o the_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n and_o his_o resurrection_n be_v the_o first_o testimony_n or_o declaration_n of_o the_o acceptance_n of_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n we_o can_v in_o any_o congruity_n suppose_v that_o such_o testimony_n or_o declaration_n shall_v be_v ascribe_v to_o any_o other_o but_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o therefore_o as_o all_o those_o text_n which_o ascribe_v our_o saviour_n resurrection_n to_o god_n do_v in_o this_o case_n speak_v strict_o and_o proper_o so_o we_o may_v now_o by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v perceive_v that_o they_o be_v no_o prejudice_n to_o his_o divinity_n because_o he_o have_v oblige_v himself_o to_o offer_v that_o body_n to_o which_o his_o deity_n be_v unite_v a_o sacrifice_n for_o sin_n he_o have_v by_o the_o same_o act_n oblige_v himself_o to_o expect_v from_o god_n the_o approbation_n and_o allowance_n of_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o receive_v from_o he_o his_o resurrection_n which_o be_v a_o effectual_a declaration_n of_o such_o allowance_n and_o therefore_o 2._o i_o do_v offer_v it_o to_o consideration_n that_o the_o resurrection_n of_o our_o saviour_n from_o the_o dead_a be_v a_o undoubted_a argument_n that_o he_o have_v finish_v and_o complete_v that_o expiation_n which_o he_o have_v undertake_v to_o make_v by_o criminal_a so_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o same_o scripture_n that_o he_o do_v not_o die_v for_o his_o own_o crime_n for_o it_o be_v utter_o impossible_a and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o he_o shall_v die_v for_o his_o own_o sin_n who_o yet_o do_v no_o sin_n neither_o be_v guile_n find_v in_o his_o mouth_n that_o be_v who_o have_v no_o sin_n of_o his_o own_o to_o die_v for_o now_o because_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o scripture_n and_o as_o we_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o because_o our_o reason_n guide_v by_o they_o do_v fall_v in_o with_o they_o and_o so_o both_o do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n that_o be_v that_o there_o be_v a_o natural_a justice_n in_o the_o case_n that_o death_n shall_v be_v inflict_v as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o because_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o the_o same_o natural_a reason_n that_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v unjust_a to_o inflict_v the_o same_o punishment_n upon_o a_o innocent_a person_n which_o be_v the_o just_a punishment_n of_o a_o criminal_a i_o say_v for_o this_o reason_n we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v that_o our_o saviour_n though_o he_o be_v in_o himself_o a_o lamb_n without_o spot_n yet_o do_v die_v for_o some_o sin_n or_o other_o be_v those_o sin_n who_o they_o will_v at_o present_a and_o therefore_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v by_o his_o our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o performance_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o such_o condition_n we_o shall_v learn_v hereafter_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o we_o dismiss_v this_o chapter_n we_o must_v not_o dissemble_v that_o it_o may_v be_v surmise_v and_o therefore_o also_o that_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o alsolute_a gospel-pardon_a that_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o arbitrary_a gospel-pardon_a and_o that_o there_o be_v some_o expression_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o lean_a that_o way_n and_o may_v at_o least_o incline_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n but_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o pardon_n can_v come_v from_o god_n but_o what_o be_v just_a and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o arbitrary_a justice_n be_v only_o one_o branch_n of_o arbitrary_a power_n and_o therefore_o be_v in_o reality_n no_o justice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o be_v only_o a_o resolute_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n without_o any_o reason_n for_o such_o determination_n therefore_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v belong_v to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o action_n be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o his_o holiness_n that_o be_v by_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n and_o he_o only_o therefore_o will_v what_o he_o please_v because_o he_o neither_o do_v not_o can_n please_v to_o will_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v just_o chap._n iii_o a_o gospel-salvation_n contain_v in_o it_o 1._o pardon_v of_o sin_n 2._o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n to_o these_o two_o other_o thing_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n negative_o the_o several_a way_n how_o such_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v from_o whence_o a_o inference_n of_o the_o doctrine_n assert_v with_o some_o practical_a inference_n have_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n make_v it_o good_a that_o misery_n and_o death_n that_o be_v in_o one_o word_n that_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o second_o that_o the_o gospel_n itself_o hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o either_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n our_o next_o proposition_n must_v be_v that_o because_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o very_a case_n be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n will_n and_o because_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o gospel_n reveal_v be_v the_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o therefore_o man_n sin_n be_v to_o be_v pardon_v though_o not_o by_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n and_o then_o because_o it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v pardon_v some_o way_n or_o other_o it_o will_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o that_o way_n be_v for_o by_o such_o enquiry_n it_o may_v perhaps_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o gospel-truth_n and_o that_o too_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o jesus_n christ_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o here_o because_o the_o gospel_n promise_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o do_v from_o thence_o in_o the_o first_o place_n conclude_v that_o the_o pardon_n must_v be_v conditional_a so_o we_o must_v in_o the_o next_o place_n inquire_v what_o that_o condition_n or_o what_o those_o condition_n be_v upon_o which_o this_o pardon_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v now_o if_o in_o order_n to_o our_o more_o rational_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o this_o enquiry_n we_o do_v first_o look_v into_o the_o gospel_n there_o to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o a_o gospel-salvation_n mean_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o learn_v that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o second_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o two_o thing_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o this_o matter_n two_o other_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o our_o lose_a holiness_n for_o as_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o second_o proposition_n that_o though_o the_o gospel_n do_v allow_v a_o pardon_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o allow_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o therefore_o something_o will_v be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n so_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o first_o proposition_n that_o because_o punishment_n for_o sin_n be_v necessary_a therefore_o some_o punishment_n be_v that_o what_o it_o will_v at_o present_a must_v be_v suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o then_o if_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o discourse_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o consideration_n of_o any_o such_o punishment_n so_o suffer_v the_o gospel-pardon_a of_o our_o sin_n do_v afterward_o ensue_v then_o such_o pardon_n may_v be_v so_o far_o ascribe_v to_o such_o punishment_n as_o that_o our_o gild_n and_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o such_o our_o gild_n may_v be_v true_o esteem_v to_o be_v expiate_v by_o it_o now_o in_o order_n to_o find_v out_o what_o punishment_n it_o be_v that_o can_v make_v such_o a_o expiation_n we_o shall_v first_o inquire_v what_o punishment_n can_v do_v it_o and_o because_o repentance_n do_v not_o so_o whole_o consist_v in_o action_n but_o that_o it_o must_v have_v something_o of_o suffer_v mix_v with_o it_o therefore_o in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o design_n let_v our_o first_o negative_a proposition_n be_v this_o 1._o that_o our_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v out_o a_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o gospel-condition_n require_v of_o we_o without_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel-expiation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n make_v out_o that_o expiation_n for_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n necessary_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n repentance_n so_o exact_a and_o complete_a as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o all_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v and_o so_o after_o all_o he_o must_v remain_v a_o sinner_n as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v i_o say_v beside_o that_o his_o very_a manner_n of_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n be_v a_o demonstrative_a proof_n that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o we_o may_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o then_o expiate_v and_o so_o neither_o pardon_v when_o god_n himself_o lay_v on_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o when_o god_n give_v his_o law_n to_o mankind_n in_o their_o universal_a father_n and_o representative_a adam_n we_o know_v that_o he_o ratify_v such_o law_n by_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n and_o we_o know_v also_o that_o every_o man_n let_v he_o be_v as_o pemtent_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v do_v still_o suffer_v that_o penalty_n and_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o also_o know_v that_o for_o that_o reason_n no_o man_n repentance_n can_v so_o save_v because_o he_o be_v a_o true_a penitent_n he_o must_v be_v save_v by_o some_o other_o expiation_n than_o by_o such_o his_o repentance_n forasmuch_o as_o his_o repentance_n can_v at_o the_o most_o but_o qualify_v he_o to_o be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n 2._o as_o man_n repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o voluntary_a punishment_n for_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o punishment_n of_o sinful_a man_n can_v therefore_o never_o expiate_v his_o sin_n because_o it_o can_v never_o purchase_v a_o just_a release_n from_o punishment_n and_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o can_v do_v that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v just_o continue_v to_o eternity_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o because_o the_o law_n of_o grace_n be_v god_n law_n as_o well_o as_o the_o law_n of_o work_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v just_a and_o we_o be_v assure_v by_o this_o law_n as_o much_o as_o word_n can_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o punishment_n which_o it_o denounce_v against_o those_o who_o do_v not_o fulfil_v the_o condition_n of_o it_o be_v eternal_a and_o that_o it_o shall_v so_o prove_v beside_o the_o express_a word_n of_o the_o law_n we_o have_v this_o far_a reason_n which_o be_v that_o the_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n threaten_v by_o the_o law_n to_o those_o who_o neglect_v to_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o sense_n or_o reason_n pass_v for_o the_o performance_n of_o such_o condition_n so_o neglect_v and_o that_o the_o neglect_v of_o this_o law_n shall_v and_o that_o in_o reason_n and_o justice_n be_v repay_v with_o a_o additional_a vengeance_n for_o the_o refusal_n of_o the_o mercy_n offer_v in_o it_o which_o design_n to_o free_v we_o from_o the_o punishment_n of_o all_o our_o other_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o with_o that_o punishment_n which_o be_v due_a to_o such_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v reason_n and_o justice_n that_o a_o more_o heinous_a sin_n easy_a or_o at_o worst_a the_o very_a feasible_a condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n yet_o if_o man_n will_v neglect_v such_o salvation_n so_o place_v within_o their_o reach_n and_o so_o leave_v the_o eternal_a life_n purchase_v for_o they_o in_o order_n to_o their_o happiness_n expose_v to_o the_o vengeance_n which_o be_v the_o just_a and_o necessary_a reward_n of_o all_o their_o other_o sin_n and_o of_o such_o their_o neglect_n they_o must_v impute_v it_o to_o their_o own_o folly_n if_o such_o vengeance_n in_o stead_n of_o happiness_n be_v the_o continue_a companion_n of_o their_o eternal_a life_n for_o in_o the_o case_n so_o put_v the_o restoration_n from_o death_n to_o life_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o make_v that_o life_n eternal_a come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o design_v to_o make_v that_o eternal_a life_n happy_a come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o grant_v mean_n to_o man_n and_o those_o not_o very_o hard_o one_o neither_o of_o obtain_v that_o happiness_n come_v from_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o foolish_a man_n defeat_v the_o counsel_n of_o god_n by_o a_o obstinate_a and_o unrelenting_a perseverance_n in_o sin_n and_o do_v in_o this_o case_n as_o he_o do_v in_o most_o other_o turn_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n into_o a_o curse_n upon_o himself_o that_o be_v he_o make_v that_o life_n which_o be_v design_v and_o that_o pure_a and_o unmixed_a vengeance_n will_v be_v their_o portion_n even_o such_o vengeance_n which_o will_v only_o revenge_v upon_o they_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o their_o god_n but_o will_v never_o so_o much_o as_o pretend_v to_o make_v up_o such_o breach_n to_o our_o present_a purpose_n then_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n shall_v without_o the_o interposition_n of_o a_o saviour_n be_v eternal_a and_o if_o this_o appear_v to_o be_v so_o by_o the_o testimony_n of_o that_o very_a gospel_n in_o which_o however_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n of_o salvation_n hold_v forth_o and_o if_o reason_n do_v vouch_v for_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o case_n teach_v and_o last_o if_o a_o eternity_n of_o to_o be_v continue_v then_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n for_o his_o sin_n can_v no_o more_o expâ—ate_a his_o sin_n under_o this_o head_n than_o his_o repentance_n as_o we_o there_o make_v it_o good_a can_v do_v so_o under_o the_o last_o anâ—_n then_o because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o possible_a way_n for_o mankind_n to_o expiate_v their_o sin_n but_o by_o their_o repentance_n or_o by_o their_o punishment_n wâ—_n do_v conclude_v that_o there_o be_v no_o possible_a way_n for_o they_o to_o make_v any_o expiation_n of_o it_o at_o all_o 3._o as_o man_n can_v himself_o be_v only_a type_n and_o shadow_n of_o that_o great_a propitiatory_a sacrifice_n that_o be_v to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n and_o therefore_o though_o they_o may_v serve_v to_o inform_v we_o that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n ought_v to_o be_v in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o because_o they_o do_v prefigure_v such_o a_o sacrifice_n they_o may_v over_o and_o above_o foretell_v that_o such_o a_o sacrifice_n shall_v be_v yet_o because_o they_o themselves_o
that_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o fall_a angel_n and_o among_o they_o one_o of_o they_o son_n of_o the_o morning_n whatever_o that_o signify_v but_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v that_o it_o signify_v something_o excellent_a but_o i_o say_v we_o know_v that_o the_o dignity_n of_o the_o fall_a angel_n do_v not_o so_o far_o avail_v they_o but_o that_o god_n provide_v and_o accept_v a_o expiation_n for_o fall_a man_n whereas_o he_o leave_v they_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o justice_n to_o attend_v the_o event_n of_o their_o own_o desert_n so_o that_o for_o aught_o we_o can_v discover_v either_o by_o revelation_n or_o reason_n the_o dignity_n of_o no_o creature_n whatsoever_o do_v qualify_v he_o to_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o those_o sin_n which_o he_o shall_v commit_v against_o the_o creator_n for_o in_o this_o case_n the_o distance_n between_o the_o party_n offend_v and_o the_o party_n offend_v be_v infinite_a there_o can_v possible_o be_v any_o mediation_n or_o expiation_n that_o can_v extend_v itself_o to_o both_o the_o extreme_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v at_o last_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v upon_o this_o head_n conclude_v that_o no_o creature_n though_o never_o so_o much_o above_o man_n can_v ever_o make_v a_o expiation_n to_o god_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man._n 5._o five_o and_o last_o as_o no_o sinful_a creature_n can_v ever_o by_o its_o punishment_n expiate_v its_o own_o sin_n or_o the_o sin_n of_o any_o other_o creature_n so_o no_o innocent_a creature_n can_v do_v the_o last_o that_o be_v no_o innocent_a creature_n can_v ever_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o any_o sinful_a creature_n for_o in_o such_o a_o case_n it_o must_v in_o order_n to_o its_o undergo_n the_o punishment_n just_o first_o take_v upon_o it_o the_o sin_n willing_o and_o so_o by_o put_v itself_o into_o the_o place_n of_o the_o sinner_n must_v first_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v such_o a_o sinner_n itself_o before_o it_o can_v undergo_v the_o punishment_n due_a to_o its_o sin_n but_o then_o when_o any_o creature_n be_v suppose_v to_o lie_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o such_o sin_n it_o be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n suppose_v to_o be_v in_o the_o same_o condition_n with_o the_o original_a sinner_n himself_o for_o when_o the_o punishment_n come_v to_o be_v transfer_v from_o the_o last_o to_o the_o first_o it_o be_v therefore_o so_o transfer_v because_o the_o law_n allow_v the_o act_n of_o the_o surety_n by_o which_o he_o have_v own_v and_o accept_v the_o sin_n to_o be_v his_o own_o and_o then_o the_o law_n in_o such_o a_o case_n make_v no_o difference_n between_o the_o surety_n and_o the_o principal_a and_o if_o the_o law_n make_v no_o difference_n then_o as_o to_o the_o business_n of_o punishment_n we_o may_v be_v therefore_o sure_a that_o there_o be_v none_o because_o both_o be_v creature_n and_o both_o be_v sinner_n if_o therefore_o as_o we_o show_v before_o the_o principal_a can_v not_o by_o his_o punishment_n have_v he_o undergo_v it_o himself_o have_v expiate_v his_o gild_n then_o for_o the_o selfsame_a reason_n the_o surety_n will_v also_o be_v unable_a to_o expiate_v the_o selfsame_a gild_n so_o that_o the_o conclusion_n of_o this_o head_n will_v be_v that_o as_o no_o sinful_a creature_n be_v able_a to_o unload_v its_o self_n of_o its_o sin_n by_o its_o punishment_n so_o no_o creature_n be_v it_o never_o so_o innocent_a will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o by_o be_v punish_v for_o its_o fellow-creature_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o do_v not_o know_v that_o any_o of_o the_o bless_a angel_n who_o retain_v their_o innocence_n do_v ever_o interpose_v for_o the_o redemption_n of_o those_o that_o fall_v so_o we_o do_v most_o assure_o know_v that_o though_o they_o do_v interpose_v the_o event_n do_v not_o answer_v because_o we_o know_v a_o perfect_a and_o unspotted_a innocence_n such_o as_o that_o of_o the_o holy_a angel_n be_v will_v be_v incline_v to_o engage_v itself_o one_o way_n or_o other_o for_o the_o redemption_n of_o their_o fall_a brethren_n do_v not_o their_o prudence_n check_v and_o control_v such_o a_o possible_a inclination_n and_o then_o if_o such_o their_o prudence_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o one_o of_o condition_n thereupon_o be_v become_v desperate_a but_o the_o scripture_n have_v not_o acquaint_v we_o that_o they_o have_v any_o mediator_n to_o intercede_v with_o god_n in_o their_o behalf_n or_o to_o make_v expiation_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o we_o may_v be_v satisfy_v that_o be_v a_o expiation_n make_v their_o sin_n must_v in_o justice_n be_v remit_v so_o may_v we_o that_o if_o any_o of_o the_o good_a angel_n have_v take_v upon_o himself_o to_o make_v such_o expiation_n he_o must_v in_o order_n to_o his_o so_o do_v have_v take_v upon_o himself_o the_o sin_n and_o so_o he_o must_v have_v bring_v himself_o into_o the_o very_a same_o condition_n with_o those_o that_o fall_v and_o that_o therefore_o he_o will_v have_v be_v just_a as_o unable_a as_o they_o to_o free_v himself_o from_o such_o condition_n no_o no_o we_o do_v or_o may_v know_v well_o enough_o that_o sin_n have_v weight_n enough_o in_o it_o to_o crush_v both_o man_n and_o angel_n experience_n have_v acquaint_v we_o with_o the_o first_o and_o revelation_n have_v assure_v we_o of_o both_o and_o then_o the_o conclusion_n be_v easy_a that_o he_o who_o in_o such_o a_o case_n can_v relieve_v either_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v more_o powerful_a than_o both_o and_o when_o we_o come_v to_o make_v it_o out_o that_o he_o who_o do_v so_o be_v so_o we_o shall_v then_o begin_v more_o plain_o to_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o though_o most_o of_o what_o we_o have_v hitherto_o offer_v have_v direct_o tend_v to_o the_o same_o design_n but_o before_o we_o proceed_v any_o far_a we_o shall_v make_v some_o few_o remark_n upon_o what_o have_v be_v already_o lay_v down_o that_o may_v have_v a_o induence_n upon_o our_o practice_n 1._o and_o first_o from_o what_o may_v think_v the_o plague_n the_o sword_n the_o famine_n great_a destroyer_n they_o be_v indeed_o the_o beesom_n of_o destruction_n and_o where_o they_o come_v make_v great_a devastation_n among_o mankind_n but_o when_o we_o have_v take_v a_o view_n of_o the_o desolation_n cause_v by_o they_o and_o by_o all_o other_o misery_n and_o mischief_n beside_o we_o must_v know_v that_o as_o sin_n have_v in_o any_o degree_n pious_a to_o be_v extraordinary_a good_a and_o not_o a_o few_o of_o we_o put_v such_o a_o value_n upon_o our_o good_a deed_n that_o we_o spoil_v that_o little_a goodness_n that_o john_n and_o the_o eighteen_o verse_n i_o have_v power_n to_o lay_v down_o my_o life_n and_o i_o have_v power_n to_o take_v it_o again_o and_o reason_n tell_v we_o the_o same_o thing_n for_o because_o he_o make_v the_o world_n and_o because_o all_o thing_n be_v create_v by_o he_o and_o for_o he_o and_o because_o for_o these_o reason_n alone_o he_o be_v the_o almighty_a god_n therefore_o there_o can_v be_v no_o question_n but_o that_o he_o may_v just_o challenge_v to_o himself_o that_o power_n which_o the_o supreme_a god_n claim_v as_o his_o most_o undoubted_a prerogative_n i_o kill_v and_o to_o his_o own_o wisdom_n if_o he_o be_v please_v so_o to_o dispose_v of_o such_o his_o life_n as_o to_o lay_v it_o down_o in_o our_o stead_n and_o for_o our_o sake_n there_o can_v not_o possible_o lie_v any_o obligation_n of_o justice_n upon_o god_n to_o bind_v he_o up_o from_o accept_v the_o offer_n of_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n because_o such_o a_o power_n do_v in_o itself_o suppose_v that_o there_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v any_o injury_n that_o shall_v forbid_v such_o a_o offer_v and_o we_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o any_o thing_n may_v be_v lawful_o do_v against_o the_o do_n of_o which_o there_o be_v no_o just_a law_n and_o therefore_o the_o case_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o the_o present_a instance_n do_v so_o far_o forth_o differ_v from_o all_o the_o case_n of_o all_o other_o imaginary_a innocent_n in_o the_o world_n for_o though_o another_o man_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v innocent_a yet_o he_o have_v no_o such_o power_n over_o his_o own_o life_n as_o to_o dispose_v of_o it_o as_o he_o himself_o shall_v please_v and_o if_o he_o shall_v by_o any_o mean_n destroy_v it_o without_o his_o own_o demerit_n it_o will_v be_v in_o he_o self-murder_n and_o that_o too_o though_o he_o shall_v offer_v it_o for_o a_o criminal_a but_o if_o he_o shall_v so_o order_v his_o life_n as_o to_o deserve_v death_n then_o that_o very_a crime_n that_o forfeit_v his_o life_n will_v spoil_v his_o innocence_n too_o and_o therefore_o shall_v a_o magistrate_n who_o be_v invest_v with_o the_o lawful_a power_n of_o the_o sword_n accept_v the_o life_n of_o a_o innocent_a in_o lieu_n of_o the_o forfeit_a life_n of_o a_o criminal_a he_o will_v therefore_o become_v a_o criminal_a himself_o because_o in_o such_o a_o commutation_n he_o allow_v the_o innocent_a man_n to_o become_v a_o criminal_a by_o usurp_v upon_o the_o prerogative_n of_o god_n himself_o which_o may_v serve_v to_o show_v the_o fraud_n and_o deceit_n of_o that_o way_n of_o argue_v which_o will_v not_o therefore_o true_o affirm_v of_o the_o life_n of_o any_o other_o innocent_a person_n in_o the_o world_n if_o yet_o we_o shall_v suppose_v such_o a_o person_n from_o the_o day_n of_o the_o creation_n to_o the_o consummation_n of_o all_o thing_n as_o therefore_o we_o learn_v by_o the_o last_o head_n that_o god_n may_v have_v refuse_v to_o accept_v our_o saviour_n death_n in_o our_o stead_n because_o the_o life_n offer_v be_v not_o the_o same_o that_o be_v forfeit_v but_o another_o so_o by_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v under_o that_o head_n and_o this_o we_o may_v now_o perceive_v that_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n in_o law_n or_o justice_n why_o he_o may_v not_o accept_v it_o for_o if_o our_o saviour_n may_v have_v become_v surety_n for_o the_o discharge_v of_o that_o debt_n which_o by_o the_o he_o be_v willing_a and_o full_o impower_v to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n in_o order_n to_o our_o release_n and_o discharge_v and_o if_o god_n may_v in_o justice_n accept_v the_o offer_n of_o such_o his_o life_n for_o so_o gracious_a and_o merciful_a a_o purpose_n then_o the_o whole_a objection_n against_o the_o justice_n of_o his_o suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n and_o for_o our_o sake_n vanish_v they_o make_v death_n a_o natural_a thing_n which_o by_o the_o way_n be_v but_o a_o heathen-notion_n of_o it_o for_o it_o do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o agree_v with_o what_o the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o about_o it_o but_o i_o say_v they_o themselves_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o they_o must_v allow_v that_o
with_o god_n will_v yet_o in_o spite_n of_o these_o and_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o express_a declaration_n to_o the_o contrary_a still_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mankind_n and_o though_o this_o of_o itself_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o recollect_v some_o few_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v to_o and_o make_v good_a already_o we_o may_v still_o be_v far_o satisfy_v that_o the_o objection_n against_o the_o value_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o order_n to_o the_o not_o of_o angel_n that_o he_o do_v therefore_o die_v for_o man_n and_o not_o for_o angel_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o fall_v angel_n be_v leave_v without_o any_o hope_n of_o escape_n from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o final_a judgement_n which_o man_n be_v not_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o vengeance_n which_o the_o fall_a angel_n shall_v then_o suffer_v will_v never_o work_v out_o their_o redemption_n or_o forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n because_o that_o vengeance_n shall_v be_v eternal_a if_o we_o consider_v that_o neither_o will_v eternal_a vengeance_n god_n and_o man_n be_v personal_o

sin_n so_o far_o we_o have_v only_o discourse_v of_o that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o do_v that_o we_o have_v not_o at_o all_o discourse_v of_o that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o upon_o our_o neglect_n to_o follow_v such_o direction_n god_n do_v for_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o forgive_v we_o the_o penalty_n which_o we_o incur_v by_o such_o our_o neglect_n and_o nothing_o more_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o by_o such_o a_o way_n of_o proceed_v all_o care_n of_o the_o directive_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o law_n be_v throw_v away_o for_o because_o all_o man_n be_v sinner_n that_o be_v because_o none_o do_v obey_v the_o law_n though_o god_n upon_o eternal_a happiness_n as_o well_o as_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n now_o that_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o reason_n nor_o justice_n pass_v for_o our_o performance_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n will_v appear_v notorious_a from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o because_o forgiveness_n do_v imply_v in_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o it_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n and_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o no_o man_n can_v be_v true_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o upon_o the_o same_o account_n to_o esteem_v a_o man_n innocent_a and_o yet_o a_o criminal_a must_v needs_o be_v absurd_a because_o it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n and_o then_o because_o in_o contradiction_n only_o one_o part_n can_v be_v true_a therefore_o so_o sure_a as_o we_o be_v that_o he_o who_o be_v true_o forgive_v must_v be_v a_o sinner_n so_o sure_o we_o be_v also_o that_o he_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v true_o suppose_v to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o when_o god_n forgive_v as_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o reason_n and_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v sin_n and_o be_v so_o express_v in_o general_a in_o the_o scripture_n so_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o the_o same_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v those_o sin_n to_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n do_v forgive_v we_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v in_o the_o law_n 2._o nor_o can_v we_o be_v so_o second_o because_o shall_v we_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v yet_o we_o can_v not_o by_o so_o do_v ever_o fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o it_o be_v notorious_a in_o itself_o that_o the_o suffering_n what_o the_o law_n threaten_v be_v not_o the_o do_v what_o the_o law_n command_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o that_o punishment_n which_o we_o have_v deserve_v can_v give_v we_o no_o
other_o sort_n of_o natural_a philosophy_n they_o have_v be_v very_o well_o satisfy_v and_o content_v without_o that_o new_a and_o uncouth_a article_n of_o their_o christian_n faith_n other_o instance_n may_v be_v produce_v to_o show_v that_o gross_a foolery_n and_o corruption_n have_v creep_v into_o religion_n at_o this_o door_n whereas_o a_o due_a consideration_n that_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v a_o covenant_n and_o the_o treat_v of_o it_o as_o such_o will_v acquaint_v we_o much_o better_a with_o the_o nature_n and_o engage_v we_o more_o effectual_o to_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o but_o this_o useful_a remark_n be_v leave_v in_o this_o place_n we_o proceed_v 2._o the_o second_o objection_n therefore_o against_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n to_o believer_n in_o order_n to_o their_o obtain_v the_o promise_a reward_n of_o the_o covenant_n stand_v thus_o that_o suppose_v that_o our_o saviour_n do_v provide_v for_o the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o that_o he_o do_v also_o fulfil_v the_o vindictive_a part_n by_o his_o death_n in_o such_o case_n there_o do_v therefore_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o superfluity_n in_o his_o provision_n because_o shall_v his_o obedience_n alone_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o we_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_n be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o then_o there_o have_v be_v no_o need_n of_o his_o death_n to_o expiate_v our_o sin_n because_o than_o we_o shall_v have_v have_v no_o sin_n to_o be_v expiate_v and_o that_o which_o may_v add_v some_o strength_n to_o what_o be_v thus_o allege_a be_v this_o that_o our_o saviour_n pay_v that_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n the_o obedience_n so_o pay_v be_v pay_v before_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o course_n of_o thing_n it_o shall_v seem_v that_o it_o may_v be_v impute_v before_o his_o death_n and_o in_o the_o course_n of_o justice_n without_o it_o for_o when_o by_o such_o imputation_n we_o be_v once_o entitle_v to_o his_o righteousness_n the_o plea_n of_o his_o death_n in_o order_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o happiness_n must_v needs_o be_v useless_a and_o superfluous_a now_o though_o it_o may_v seem_v indeed_o that_o thing_n may_v have_v go_v so_o if_o we_o only_o have_v a_o regard_v to_o the_o order_n of_o time_n yet_o if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o order_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o they_o can_v not_o for_o we_o can_v by_o any_o estimation_n of_o justice_n whatsoever_o be_v reckon_v righteous_a so_o long_o as_o our_o gild_n lie_v upon_o we_o and_o when_o once_o by_o our_o sin_n we_o have_v make_v ourselves_o guilty_a such_o gild_n must_v needs_o lie_v upon_o we_o till_o it_o be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o expiate_v now_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o full_o make_v it_o out_o that_o it_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v expiate_v any_o other_o way_n than_o by_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n therefore_o the_o death_n of_o such_o saviour_n must_v in_o the_o order_n of_o justice_n first_o expiate_v such_o our_o gild_n before_o we_o can_v possible_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a engage_v as_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o god_n to_o love_v holiness_n and_o hate_v wickedness_n one_o part_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o be_v in_o justice_n to_o be_v provide_v for_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o and_o then_o if_o neither_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n nor_o the_o imperfect_a obedience_n of_o man_n on_o the_o other_o and_o if_o our_o saviour_n undertake_v for_o man_n sake_n to_o supply_v man_n defect_n then_o there_o be_v the_o same_o necessity_n in_o justice_n that_o he_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o man_n who_o it_o seize_v now_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n who_o die_v because_o they_o be_v sinner_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o safe_o conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n who_o be_v not_o a_o sinner_n shall_v undertake_v by_o his_o own_o death_n to_o make_v good_a the_o ransom_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n from_o death_n and_o after_o that_o shall_v make_v good_a his_o undertake_n i_o say_v if_o any_o man_n shall_v do_v this_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o his_o death_n or_o his_o life_n which_o you_o will_v be_v therefore_o of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n or_o death_n
