this_o no_o religion_n can_v be_v make_v out_o to_o be_v rational_a in_o the_o theory_n much_o less_o persuade_v into_o practice_n without_o the_o establishment_n of_o this_o principle_n which_o be_v establish_v do_v certain_o infer_v a_o necessity_n of_o keep_v godâ—s_a commandment_n in_o order_n to_o the_o hope_n of_o eternal_a life_n which_o be_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v demonstrate_v but_o against_o this_o doctrine_n many_o thing_n may_v be_v object_v as_o 1._o that_o it_o seem_v to_o evacuate_v the_o distinction_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a covenant_n by_o confound_v the_o condition_n of_o they_o which_o by_o this_o hypothesis_n seem_v to_o be_v the_o same_o viz._n do_v this_o and_o live_v 2._o that_o it_o lay_v a_o burden_n upon_o christian_n as_o heavy_a as_o that_o which_o the_o jew_n be_v never_o able_a to_o bear_v and_o give_v occasion_n for_o the_o disciple_n question_v who_o then_o can_v be_v save_v 3._o that_o it_o seem_v to_o contradict_v saint_n paul_n doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n 4.44_o rom._n 4.44_o without_o work_n 4._o and_o to_o favour_v the_o popish_a doctrine_n of_o merit_n these_o objection_n will_v be_v most_o convenient_o this_o as_o we_o find_v by_o the_o frequent_a complaint_n of_o the_o prophet_n nor_o be_v christian_n any_o better_o affect_v to_o this_o wholesome_a cure_n for_o sin_n but_o every_o whit_n as_o much_o incline_v to_o elude_v the_o necessity_n of_o it_o or_o at_o least_o to_o cheat_v their_o own_o soul_n in_o the_o hypocritical_a pretence_n of_o it_o but_o the_o more_o evidence_n there_o be_v for_o the_o necessity_n of_o repentance_n unto_o salvation_n the_o more_o necessary_a it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o right_a notion_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o because_o the_o mistake_n in_o this_o point_n be_v no_o less_o dangerous_a than_o in_o that_o of_o faith_n nor_o be_v man_n less_o apt_a to_o be_v deceive_v in_o the_o one_o than_o in_o the_o other_o and_o if_o there_o be_v indeed_o a_o indispensable_a necessity_n of_o repentance_n as_o well_o as_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v not_o so_o solicitous_a to_o find_v out_o the_o true_a as_o the_o easy_a notion_n of_o they_o both_o that_o be_v such_o a_o one_o sa_o be_v practicable_a with_o the_o least_o restraint_n to_o his_o lust_n or_o most_o consi_v with_o his_o licentious_a liberty_n such_o a_o notion_n
gross_a act_n of_o moral_a impiety_n such_o as_o profane_v swear_v curse_a and_o all_o kind_n of_o uncleanness_n riot_n and_o drunkenness_n may_v be_v profess_o do_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n be_v no_o more_o than_o have_v be_v own_v and_o assert_v by_o our_o ranter_n and_o libertine_n not_o to_o mention_v the_o horrid_a opinion_n and_o expression_n of_o god_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o sin_n by_o necessitate_v effectual_o and_o irresistible_o move_v and_o determine_v the_o will_n of_o man_n to_o the_o worst_a of_o sin_n by_o a_o efficacious_a decree_n first_o ordain_v parallel_v they_o to_o the_o forementioned_a rank_n of_o profane_a mocker_n of_o god_n and_o his_o glory_n only_o i_o hearty_o wish_v such_o teacher_n will_v sad_o consider_v whether_o those_o doctrine_n be_v like_a to_o produce_v any_o such_o glorious_a conception_n of_o god_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o other_o man_n as_o they_o pretend_v they_o do_v in_o they_o 4._o but_o my_o reprehension_n can_v without_o partiality_n determine_v in_o such_o a_o list_n of_o person_n as_o i_o have_v hitherto_o describe_v because_o it_o may_v most_o just_o be_v extend_v to_o a_o better_a sort_n of_o carnal_a vain_a and_o worldly_a in_o our_o common_a action_n so_o negligent_a cold_a lazy_a and_o slight_a in_o our_o religious_a action_n be_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n more_o precious_a to_o we_o other_o end_n will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o over-sought_a by_o we_o we_o have_v all_o cause_n to_o be_v humble_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o this_o general_a sin_n of_o neglect_v his_o glory_n have_v the_o lord_n deserve_v so_o to_o be_v slight_v by_o we_o nay_o which_o of_o we_o can_v say_v but_o he_o have_v infinite_o deserve_v we_o shall_v have_v have_v all_o the_o zeal_n that_o be_v possible_a for_o his_o glory_n shall_v he_o regard_v we_o and_o our_o welfare_n no_o more_o than_o we_o do_v he_o and_o his_o glory_n what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o with_o what_o face_n do_v we_o expect_v to_o appear_v before_o this_o glorious_a god_n who_o we_o have_v so_o much_o slight_v how_o can_v we_o pretend_v we_o love_v he_o with_o all_o our_o heart_n and_o all_o our_o might_n while_o we_o have_v and_o sincere_o design_v to_o this_o end_n be_v hallow_v and_o without_o it_o the_o most_o religious_a action_n be_v profane_v herein_o consist_v the_o form_n essence_n and_o spirit_n of_o religion_n proper_o so_o call_v godliness_n both_o name_n and_o thing_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o religious_a affection_n to_o god_n express_v by_o such_o act_n as_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o will_n the_o world_n with_o a_o devote_v of_o a_o thing_n to_o the_o sacred_a majesty_n of_o god_n look_v how_o much_o a_o man_n be_v sequester_v from_o sin_n and_o from_o the_o world_n and_o devote_v to_o god_n and_o his_o glory_n so_o much_o holiness_n be_v there_o in_o he_o holiness_n be_v common_o distinguish_v into_o inherent_a and_o relative_a but_o to_o speak_v strict_o all_o holiness_n in_o a_o creature_n be_v relative_a import_v a_o singular_a consignation_n unto_o god_n not_o but_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o inherent_a quality_n as_o that_o which_o be_v call_v holiness_n in_o all_o this_o salvation_n mean_v that_o be_v right_o understand_v and_o unfeigned_o believe_v contain_v so_o powerful_a a_o motive_n of_o the_o duty_n which_o the_o text_n require_v as_o make_v it_o scarce_o wherein_o he_o understand_v and_o believe_v his_o only_a happiness_n to_o consist_v so_o that_o the_o general_a reason_n why_o this_o work_n be_v so_o much_o neglect_v seem_v to_o be_v because_o either_o the_o end_n or_o the_o work_n which_o be_v necessary_a to_o it_o be_v not_o right_o understand_v or_o not_o due_o believe_v my_o business_n therefore_o shall_v be_v as_o plain_o as_o i_o can_v to_o inform_v the_o understanding_n in_o each_o particular_a that_o be_v both_o what_o this_o salvation_n be_v and_o what_o work_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o the_o attainment_n thereof_o but_o when_o this_o be_v do_v to_o undertake_v also_o to_o persuade_v the_o belief_n of_o it_o by_o any_o other_o evidence_n than_o will_v be_v contain_v in_o the_o respective_a explication_n and_o declaration_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o from_o scripture_n from_o whence_o only_o it_o can_v be_v declare_v be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v by_o christian_n because_o their_o be_v such_o suppose_v their_o belief_n of_o that_o evidence_n and_o be_v no_o less_o than_o a_o contradiction_n to_o the_o want_n of_o that_o faith_n come_v we_o then_o to_o the_o first_o of_o our_o inquiry_n viz._n what_o this_o salvation_n be_v which_o the_o text_n speak_v of_o for_o the_o understanding_n of_o that_o word_n a_o fit_a rise_n may_v be_v take_v from_o the_o interpretation_n of_o the_o bless_a name_n of_o jesus_n give_v by_o the_o archangel_n to_o the_o mother_n of_o our_o saviour_n the_o author_n of_o this_o salvation_n matth._n 1.21_o thou_o shall_v call_v his_o name_n jesus_n for_o he_o shall_v save_v his_o people_n from_o their_o sin_n there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o this_o be_v the_o salvation_n which_o our_o text_n speak_v of_o for_o salvation_n proper_o signify_v preservation_n or_o deliverance_n from_o evil_n and_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n be_v either_o sin_n or_o the_o consequent_a and_o punishment_n of_o sin_n the_o first_o and_o the_o great_a evil_n be_v that_o of_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o punishment_n that_o also_o be_v comprehend_v under_o the_o name_n of_o sin_n by_o a_o ordinary_a metonymy_n but_o then_o to_o confine_v the_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n sin_n in_o the_o angel_n speech_n to_o this_o secondary_a and_o figurative_a sense_n wherein_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n with_o exclusion_n of_o the_o first_o and_o most_o proper_a sense_n can_v be_v reasonable_a except_o it_o may_v appear_v to_o be_v necessary_a which_o can_v be_v unless_o the_o design_n of_o this_o jesus_n be_v only_o to_o deliver_v man_n from_o the_o punishment_n and_o not_o at_o all_o from_o the_o dominion_n and_o practice_n of_o sin_n the_o contrary_a whereof_o be_v same_o penance_n again_o when_o time_n serve_v for_o their_o new_a sin_n and_o this_o be_v take_v by_o the_o vulgar_a people_n to_o be_v the_o business_n of_o repentance_n sufficient_a to_o save_v they_o from_o hell_n at_o least_o though_o not_o from_o purgatory_n so_o that_o if_o they_o be_v not_o prevent_v at_o last_o by_o sudden_a death_n of_o time_n or_o opportunity_n to_o act_v this_o which_o prayer_n go_v out_o of_o feign_a lip_n as_o they_o must_v needs_o do_v while_o the_o thing_n pray_v for_o be_v neither_o design_v nor_o desire_v be_v turn_v into_o sin_n be_v a_o open_a flatter_a of_o god_n with_o their_o lip_n while_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o from_o he_o what_o else_o can_v it_o be_v but_o a_o plain_a mock_n of_o god_n and_o take_v his_o holy_a name_n in_o vain_a for_o a_o man_n with_o such_o seem_a devotion_n to_o pretend_v a_o humble_a and_o earnest_a desire_n of_o his_o grace_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o perform_v such_o thing_n as_o he_o never_o intend_v to_o go_v about_o this_o repentance_n therefore_o consist_v only_o in_o such_o formal_a confession_n and_o petition_n be_v nothing_o but_o a_o addition_n to_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o hypocritical_a penitent_n and_o therefore_o far_o enough_o from_o the_o right_a notion_n of_o repentance_n to_o salvation_n but_o hitherto_o i_o have_v insist_v only_o upon_o some_o gross_a mistake_n about_o the_o matter_n of_o repentance_n which_o remain_v to_o be_v rectify_v by_o a_o right_a description_n of_o the_o true_a nature_n of_o that_o duty_n wherein_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o the_o repentance_n towards_o or_o unto_o god_n act._n 20.21_o the_o former_a be_v signify_v by_o the_o same_o apostle_n he._n 6.1_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n that_o be_v from_o sinful_a work_n call_v dead_a work_n because_o they_o be_v the_o act_n of_o a_o man_n spiritual_o dead_a and_o destitute_a of_o spiritual_a and_o divine_a life_n these_o two_o thing_n make_v up_o the_o entire_a most_o full_o and_o plain_o express_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n ezek._n 18.21_o but_o if_o the_o wicked_a man_n will_v turn_v from_o all_o his_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v commit_v and_o keep_v all_o my_o statute_n and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v lawful_a and_o right_a he_o shall_v sure_o live_v he_o shall_v not_o die_v this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o of_o the_o plain_a and_o as_o amount_n to_o repentance_n for_o a_o true_a godly_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n as_o offensive_a to_o god_n and_o repugnant_a to_o his_o just_a and_o holy_a will_n can_v be_v separate_v from_o a_o real_a purpose_n of_o forsake_v the_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v sincere_o sorry_a for_o that_o which_o the_o will_n allow_v either_o as_o already_o do_v or_o to_o be_v do_v hereafter_o and_o therefore_o also_o such_o confession_n of_o sin_n as_o proceed_v from_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n do_v necessary_o imply_v a_o conversion_n or_o change_n of_o the_o will_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o radicate_v and_o fix_v as_o will_v prove_v effectual_a upon_o the_o trial_n which_o god_n only_o know_v be_v nothing_o less_o than_o a_o true_a repentance_n begin_v in_o repentance_n which_o can_v be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o work_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n see_v the_o work_n of_o repentance_n can_v only_o be_v say_v to_o be_v begin_v by_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o confession_n of_o sin_n and_o that_o only_a when_o those_o thing_n be_v join_v with_o a_o firm_a and_o sincere_a purpose_n of_o reformation_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o entire_a duty_n can_v not_o otherwise_o be_v wrought_v out_o than_o by_o a_o constant_a and_o faithful_a performance_n of_o that_o godly_a purpose_n have_v now_o lay_v down_o from_o scripture_n the_o nature_n of_o repentance_n i_o come_v to_o the_o answer_n of_o the_o objection_n before_o mention_v consist_v of_o two_o branch_n 1._o that_o the_o urge_a necessity_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o commandment_n as_o part_v of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n destroy_v the_o distinction_n of_o it_o from_o the_o old_a make_v both_o of_o they_o to_o in_o these_o general_a term_n of_o do_v this_o and_o live_v and_o the_o consequence_n of_o this_o be_v 2._o that_o the_o burden_n hereby_o lay_v upon_o christian_n be_v intolerable_a in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o commandment_n be_v a_o yoke_n too_o heavy_a for_o the_o shoulder_n of_o lapse_v nature_n though_o strengthen_v by_o grace_n my_o answer_n to_o this_o objection_n shall_v be_v ground_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n as_o that_o be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o peculiar_a precept_n and_o privilege_v of_o the_o new_a covenant_n repentance_n as_o have_v be_v show_v in_o the_o complete_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n and_o extent_n of_o the_o duty_n require_v obedience_n to_o the_o commandment_n as_o faith_n also_o do_v but_o not_o the_o same_o obedience_n which_o the_o law_n require_v i_o say_v therefore_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o second_o covenant_n and_o not_o of_o the_o first_o a_o precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n not_o of_o the_o law_n as_o such_o for_o to_o repent_v suppose_v sin_n which_o by_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o first_o covenant_n suppose_v to_o be_v make_v with_o mankind_n in_o his_o innocency_n be_v indispensable_o exclude_v repentance_n can_v become_v a_o duty_n till_o
a_o man_n have_v break_v the_o law_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v a_o direct_a and_o absolute_a precept_n of_o the_o law_n i_o say_v a_o direct_a or_o absolute_a precept_n of_o the_o law_n in_o its_o can_v sin_v no_o more_o because_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n but_o that_o law_n that_o bind_v a_o man_n to_o perpetual_a obedience_n do_v not_o only_o bind_v a_o man_n from_o sin_v once_o but_o suppose_v that_o he_o have_v do_v so_o it_o must_v needs_o oblige_v he_o to_o cease_v from_o continue_v in_o his_o sin_n but_o proper_o and_o direct_o repentance_n be_v a_o precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n direct_v to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n as_o a_o remedy_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o and_o a_o condition_n of_o pardon_n not_o allow_v by_o the_o original_a law_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o a_o precept_n only_o but_o a_o privilege_n peculiar_a to_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o gracious_a dispensation_n and_o mitigation_n of_o the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n act._n 11.18_o god_n have_v grant_v to_o the_o gentile_n repentance_n unto_o life_n that_o a_o sinner_n upon_o his_o repentance_n through_o faith_n in_o a_o mediator_n that_o have_v expiate_v his_o sin_n shall_v obtain_v remission_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o be_v discharge_v from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v a_o new_a grant_n grace_n and_o privilege_v of_o the_o second_o covenant_n the_o difference_n therefore_o between_o the_o first_o and_o second_o covenant_n lie_v not_o in_o the_o common_a sense_n of_o those_o general_a term_n do_v this_o and_o live_v as_o if_o the_o second_o covenant_n require_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o be_v do_v which_o be_v contrary_a to_o our_o text_n and_o all_o those_o which_o have_v be_v allege_v for_o the_o explication_n thereof_o but_o partly_o in_o the_o special_a signification_n of_o the_o word_n this_o and_o partly_o in_o a_o gracious_a promise_n of_o grace_n sufficient_a to_o enable_v a_o man_n to_o perform_v what_o ever_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v by_o that_o word_n this_o which_o can_v be_v so_o interpret_v as_o to_o signify_v the_o same_o thing_n in_o reference_n to_o both_o covenant_n because_o though_o something_o be_v require_v to_o be_v do_v as_o a_o condition_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o old_a yet_o not_o the_o same_o for_o something_o be_v require_v in_o the_o old_a which_o be_v not_o in_o the_o new_a and_o something_o be_v require_v in_o the_o new_a which_o be_v not_o in_o the_o old_a and_o something_o be_v require_v in_o both_o for_o instance_n the_o old_a covenant_n indispensable_o require_v perfect_a innocence_n in_o a_o entire_a fulfil_v the_o whole_a law_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n or_o declare_v or_o to_o be_v declare_v by_o divine_a revelation_n leave_v no_o place_n for_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o repentance_n to_o be_v admit_v for_o a_o remedy_n of_o sin_n but_o this_o perfect_a innocence_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v require_v in_o the_o new_a covenant_n as_o the_o very_a supposition_n of_o it_o prevent_v and_o destroy_v the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o the_o new_a which_o import_v a_o plain_a contradiction_n to_o such_o sinless_a innocence_n in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o new_a covenant_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o remedy_n provide_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o the_o want_n of_o such_o innocence_n be_v it_o possible_a to_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o old_a covenant_n the_o new_a can_v have_v no_o place_n because_o that_o suppose_v a_o man_n a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o old_a and_o if_o now_o saviour_n to_o save_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n which_o also_o import_v a_o plain_a repugnance_n to_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o first_o in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o imply_v a_o violation_n of_o it_o faith_n in_o a_o saviour_n to_o save_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n can_v be_v no_o precept_n of_o the_o old_a covenant_n because_o that_o do_v neither_o declare_v nor_o admit_v any_o such_o saviour_n these_o be_v two_o main_a thing_n whereby_o the_o two_o covenant_n be_v distinguish_v in_o their_o condition_n and_o it_o be_v not_o requisite_a in_o this_o place_n to_o name_v any_o more_o but_o with_o these_o difference_n there_o be_v also_o something_o common_a to_o both_o and_o that_o be_v the_o general_a obligation_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o commandment_n according_a to_o the_o express_a word_n of_o our_o saviour_n before_o allege_a if_o thou_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n keep_v the_o commandment_n and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v a_o duty_n of_o such_o necessity_n as_o can_v not_o be_v discharge_v or_o dispense_v with_o by_o any_o positive_a will_n or_o covenant_n of_o god_n upon_o any_o consideration_n whatsoever_o no_o not_o upon_o that_o of_o a_o most_o perfect_a satisfaction_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n with_o a_o entire_a fulfil_n of_o it_o by_o a_o surety_n for_o and_o in_o the_o stead_n of_o the_o transgressor_n i_o say_v that_o neither_o upon_o this_o nor_o any_o other_o consideration_n the_o duty_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o moral_a law_n of_o god_n can_v be_v discharge_v or_o dispense_v with_o for_o these_o reason_n 1._o because_o such_o a_o discharge_n or_o dispensation_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o sovereignty_n of_o god_n which_o import_v a_o authority_n to_o command_v all_o creature_n that_o be_v capable_a of_o receive_v and_o obey_v any_o command_n this_o authority_n be_v essential_a to_o the_o divine_a nature_n he_o can_v divest_v himself_o of_o by_o any_o positive_a will_n no_o more_o than_o he_o can_v destroy_v his_o own_o essence_n but_o to_o discharge_v a_o creature_n capable_a of_o the_o duty_n of_o obedience_n from_o all_o obligation_n thereunto_o be_v to_o put_v off_o that_o authority_n because_o where_o there_o be_v no_o obligation_n to_o obedience_n there_o can_v be_v no_o authority_n to_o command_v if_o therefore_o god_n shall_v discharge_v a_o creature_n of_o his_o duty_n of_o obey_v his_o command_n he_o shall_v thereby_o quit_v his_o sovereignty_n over_o that_o creature_n which_o be_v altogether_o impossible_a 2._o because_o such_o a_o liberty_n grant_v to_o any_o part_n of_o mankind_n licence_n 3._o because_o this_o liberty_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n as_o he_o be_v a_o reasonable_a creature_n because_o as_o he_o be_v reasonable_a he_o be_v capable_a of_o receive_v command_n and_o law_n from_o his_o creator_n and_o as_o he_o be_v a_o creature_n he_o be_v natural_o bind_v to_o be_v subject_a to_o they_o the_o relation_n of_o a_o creature_n natural_o import_v such_o a_o debt_n of_o subjection_n to_o the_o creator_n as_o can_v never_o be_v discharge_v 4._o and_o last_o because_o there_o be_v some_o divine_a law_n which_o be_v in_o themselves_o indispensable_a to_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n such_o be_v that_o which_o be_v common_o call_v the_o moral_a law_n in_o the_o strict_a sense_n signify_v not_o all_o precept_n that_o concern_v the_o manner_n of_o man_n but_o the_o same_o thing_n with_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o right_a reason_n which_o as_o it_o teach_v a_o distinction_n
of_o good_a and_o evil_a contain_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o some_o action_n antecedent_n to_o any_o positive_a or_o express_a law_n of_o god_n or_o man_n so_o do_v it_o indispensable_o oblige_v to_o
