but_o original_a sin_n infuse_v into_o every_o man_n heart_n the_o seed_n of_o all_o corruption_n many_o man_n stand_v much_o upon_o their_o good_a meaning_n and_o upright_o heart_n and_o brag_v of_o a_o good_a nature_n but_o they_o be_v foul_o deceive_v for_o take_v the_o civil_a man_n upon_o the_o earth_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o all_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n be_v in_o he_o by_o nature_n but_o to_o explain_v this_o point_n full_o observe_v these_o 2._o clause_n first_o i_o say_v not_o the_o practice_n of_o all_o sin_n but_o the_o seed_n for_o all_o man_n practise_v not_o all_o sin_n the_o seed_n be_v in_o their_o nature_n but_o the_o practice_n be_v restrain_v sometime_o by_o education_n sometime_o by_o good_a and_o wholesome_a law_n sometime_o the_o constitution_n of_o man_n body_n deny_v the_o practice_n of_o some_o sin_n sometime_o the_o country_n a_o man_n dwell_v in_o or_o call_v a_o man_n live_v in_o keep_v he_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o some_o sin_n and_o always_o a_o general_a and_o limit_v grace_n of_o god_n restrain_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o man_n from_o run_v into_o many_o sin_n which_o hand_n of_o god_n if_o god_n shall_v take_v away_o and_o leave_v every_o man_n to_o his_o nature_n we_o shall_v see_v that_o every_o man_n will_v practice_v any_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n yea_o even_o the_o great_a sin_n that_o ever_o we_o hear_v to_o be_v do_v in_o the_o world_n all_o man_n which_o know_v themselves_o know_v this_o to_o be_v true_a and_o the_o more_o a_o man_n know_v his_o own_o heart_n the_o more_o he_o see_v that_o his_o heart_n be_v a_o sea_n of_o all_o wickedness_n and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o he_o have_v not_o fall_v into_o the_o mighty_a and_o most_o monstrous_a sin_n in_o the_o world_n second_o i_o say_v by_o nature_n for_o i_o know_v by_o good_a education_n and_o by_o grace_n it_o be_v otherwise_o grace_n rectify_v nature_n but_o that_o be_v no_o thanks_n to_o nature_n for_o it_o be_v as_o evil_a and_o corrupt_a still_o be_v sever_v from_o grace_n and_o therefore_o nature_n must_v be_v full_o abolish_v afore_o man_n come_v to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o though_o all_o this_o be_v true_a i_o say_v not_o that_o sin_n break_v out_o in_o all_o nature_n alike_o though_o all_o nature_n be_v alike_o corrupt_a for_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n be_v restrain_v in_o some_o more_o than_o other_o by_o the_o mean_v aforesaid_a but_o this_o be_v the_o truth_n that_o whereas_o some_o be_v not_o so_o angry_a some_o not_o so_o wanton_a some_o not_o so_o cruel_a some_o not_o so_o covetous_a some_o not_o so_o ambitious_a etc._n etc._n as_o other_o that_o come_v not_o from_o any_o goodness_n of_o nature_n in_o they_o above_o the_o other_o originallie_o but_o from_o god_n hand_n which_o temper_v restrain_v and_o moderate_v every_o man_n nature_n as_o he_o see_v good_a and_o if_o god_n do_v not_o thus_o moderate_a &_o restrain_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n but_o suffer_v they_o to_o break_v out_o to_o the_o full_a there_o will_v then_o be_v no_o order_n but_o all_o confusion_n in_o the_o world_n therefore_o as_o especial_o for_o his_o church_n quietness_n so_o also_o for_o the_o preservation_n of_o public_a peace_n and_o the_o uphold_v of_o society_n in_o the_o world_n between_o man_n and_o man_n the_o lord_n hold_v a_o hand_n over_o every_o man_n nature_n and_o keep_v every_o one_o in_o a_o certain_a compass_n limit_v by_o the_o wisdom_n of_o his_o power_n which_o restrain_v hand_n of_o he_o if_o the_o lord_n shall_v take_v away_o all_o society_n and_o commonwealth_n will_v be_v turn_v up-side_n down_o because_o every_o man_n by_o the_o universal_a corruption_n of_o his_o nature_n will_v break_v out_o into_o every_o sin_n i_o end_v this_o point_n with_o appeal_n to_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o conscience_n of_o all_o man_n and_o especial_o of_o the_o best_a and_o holy_a man_n of_o who_o i_o will_v ask_v this_o question_n whether_o they_o find_v not_o in_o their_o nature_n a_o inclination_n even_o to_o the_o foul_a sin_n in_o the_o world_n if_o shame_n or_o fear_v or_o else_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n restrain_v they_o not_o so_o that_o the_o best_a man_n do_v know_v well_o enough_o what_o ado_n they_o have_v with_o their_o corrupt_a nature_n to_o keep_v they_o within_o the_o compass_n of_o obedience_n nay_o i_o yet_o add_v further_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n &_o of_o all_o man_n be_v so_o corrupt_a since_o adam_n that_o even_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o a_o proneness_n to_o it_o be_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o every_o man_n though_o not_o one_o man_n among_o many_o thousand_o do_v commit_v that_o sin_n for_o see_v in_o that_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o heap_n or_o sea_n of_o all_o sin_n gather_v together_o he_o therefore_o that_o have_v in_o his_o nature_n the_o seed_n of_o all_o sin_n have_v
believe_v in_o christ_n and_o forsake_v sin_n it_o be_v therefore_o manifest_a that_o they_o have_v not_o yet_o begin_v to_o believe_v or_o repent_v nor_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o first_o step_n of_o grace_n which_o lead_v to_o repentance_n for_o that_o they_o have_v not_o learn_v this_o lesson_n which_o the_o prophet_n teach_v that_o be_v to_o search_v themselves_o furthermore_o let_v we_o in_o the_o second_o place_n observe_v better_o the_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n it_o signify_v to_o search_v narrowe_o as_o a_o man_n will_v do_v for_o a_o piece_n of_o gold_n or_o a_o precious_a jewel_n which_o be_v lose_v in_o a_o great_a house_n or_o as_o a_o man_n may_v search_v for_o gold_n in_o a_o mine_n of_o the_o earth_n where_o be_v much_o earth_n and_o but_o very_o little_a gold_n oar_n here_o we_o may_v learn_v that_o in_o true_a repentance_n and_o conversion_n we_o must_v not_o search_v so_o only_o as_o to_o find_v the_o gross_a and_o palpable_a sin_n of_o our_o life_n but_o so_o as_o we_o may_v find_v those_o sin_n which_o the_o world_n account_v lesser_a sin_n and_o espy_v our_o secret_a sault_n &_o privy_a corruption_n some_o corruption_n seem_v more_o near_o a_o kin_n of_o our_o nature_n &_o therein_o man_n hope_v to_o be_v excuse_v when_o they_o forsake_v many_o other_o great_a sin_n but_o a_o true_a penitent_a sinner_n must_v search_v for_o such_o so_o as_o a_o good_a magistrate_n search_v for_o a_o lurk_a traitor_n which_o be_v convey_v into_o some_o close_a and_o secret_a corner_n and_o he_o must_v ransack_v his_o heart_n for_o such_o corruption_n as_o wherein_o his_o heart_n take_v special_a delight_n and_o must_v think_v that_o no_o sin_n can_v be_v so_o small_a but_o it_o be_v too_o great_a to_o be_v spare_v and_o that_o every_o sin_n great_a or_o little_a must_v be_v search_v for_o as_o be_v all_o traitor_n to_o god_n majesty_n but_o alas_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n be_v far_o otherwise_o great_a sin_n be_v little_a sin_n little_a sin_n be_v no_o sin_n nay_o after_o a_o little_a custom_n great_a sin_n be_v so_o little_a or_o nothing_o and_o so_o at_o last_o man_n make_v no_o bone_n of_o gross_a and_o service_n no_o sin_n lip_n labour_n in_o pray_v vain_a and_o customable_a swear_n mock_v of_o religion_n and_o the_o professor_n thereof_o no_o sin_n profane_v of_o the_o sabbaoth_n contemn_v of_o preacher_n abuse_v of_o parent_n no_o sin_n pride_n in_o apparel_n superfluity_n in_o meat_n beastly_a &_o ordinary_a drunkenness_n fornication_n no_o sin_n nay_o deceit_n cosonage_n oppress_v usury_n notorious_a bribery_n and_o covetousness_n that_o mother_n sin_n these_o be_v count_v no_o sin_n these_o beam_n be_v make_v but_o moat_n by_o profane_a man_n &_o they_o be_v so_o mince_v and_o carve_v or_o there_o be_v some_o such_o necessity_n of_o they_o or_o some_o such_o other_o flourish_n or_o varnish_n must_v be_v cast_v upon_o they_o as_o that_o they_o be_v little_a or_o none_o at_o all_o alas_o alas_o be_v not_o that_o a_o simple_a and_o a_o silly_a search_n where_o such_o block_n as_o these_o be_v lie_v unespy_v what_o be_v moul-hille_n when_o such_o mountain_n be_v not_o see_v moat_n will_v be_v little_o regard_v where_o such_o beam_n be_v not_o discern_v but_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o true_a trial_n nor_o diligent_a search_n make_v for_o a_o true_a convert_n will_v search_v his_o hart_n for_o all_o and_o will_v spare_v none_o he_o deal_v in_o search_v his_o own_o heart_n as_o a_o good_a justice_n of_o peace_n in_o search_v for_o traitor_n or_o seminary_n priest_n he_o seek_v not_o superficial_o but_o most_o exact_o &_o leave_v never_o a_o corner_n unsought_a and_o he_o think_v great_a sin_n to_o be_v infinite_a and_o little_a sin_n great_a and_o judge_v no_o sin_n so_o small_a but_o that_o it_o deserve_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o he_o wonder_v at_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n which_o throw_v we_o not_o all_o down_o to_o hell_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o he_o cry_v out_o with_o holy_a jeremie_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n mercy_n that_o we_o be_v not_o consume_v away_o then_o with_o this_o superficial_a and_o hypocritical_a search_n where_o so_o many_o sin_n be_v spare_v and_o not_o find_v out_o it_o be_v pharisaical_a for_o even_o so_o the_o pharisie_n when_o he_o come_v into_o the_o temple_n to_o reckon_v with_o god_n and_o to_o tell_v what_o traitor_n he_o have_v find_v that_o be_v what_o sin_n upon_o good_a search_n he_o have_v espy_v he_o return_v his_o precept_n all_o be_v well_o he_o have_v find_v never_o a_o one_o but_o begin_v to_o thank_v god_n that_o he_o be_v so_o good_a &_o so_o good_a and_o not_o so_o ill_a and_o so_o ill_a nor_o yet_o like_o the_o publican_n the_o world_n be_v full_a of_o pharisy_n not_o only_o the_o popish_a church_n but_o even_o our_o church_n swarm_n with_o these_o superficial_a search_n who_o can_v because_o they_o will_v not_o find_v any_o sin_n to_o present_v unto_o god_n man_n think_v in_o the_o country_n a_o church_n officer_n hazard_v his_o oath_n if_o he_o present_v all_o well_o and_o find_v no_o fault_n in_o his_o parish_n to_o present_a as_o punishable_a to_o the_o ordinary_a for_o man_n think_v it_o unpossible_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v none_o in_o a_o whole_a parish_n then_o how_o do_v that_o man_n hazard_v his_o own_o soul_n who_o be_v make_v overseer_n &_o searcher_n of_o his_o heart_n find_v nothing_o in_o it_o to_o present_v to_o the_o lord_n for_o it_o be_v no_o more_o easy_a to_o espy_v outward_a and_o actual_a transgression_n in_o a_o whole_a parish_n than_o it_o be_v to_o find_v a_o heap_n of_o corruption_n in_o a_o man_n heart_n if_o a_o man_n will_v search_v into_o the_o bottom_n of_o it_o with_o the_o light_n of_o god_n law_n therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o keep_v his_o visitation_n what_o shall_v become_v of_o such_o a_o man_n but_o to_o undergo_v the_o strict_a &_o severe_a search_n of_o the_o almighty_a because_o he_o will_v not_o search_v himself_o our_o body_n &_o life_n be_v free_a from_o spanish_a inquisition_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o last_o prop_n of_o it_o for_o the_o papist_n do_v not_o think_v we_o protestant_n great_a enemy_n to_o their_o superstition_n than_o the_o inward_a corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v to_o our_o salvation_n therefore_o it_o may_v be_v a_o godly_a policy_n for_o every_o man_n even_o to_o erect_v a_o inquisition_n over_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o not_o to_o spare_v his_o most_o secret_a &_o dear_a sin_n and_o such_o as_o be_v near_o ally_v to_o his_o own_o nature_n for_o that_o be_v the_o true_a search_n here_o command_v by_o the_o prophet_n &_o practise_v by_o all_o godly_a and_o holy_a man_n when_o a_o man_n purpose_v to_o find_v all_o that_o be_v &_o to_o espy_v even_o all_o his_o sin_n for_o a_o godly_a man_n be_v never_o satisfy_v in_o his_o search_n but_o still_o the_o more_o he_o find_v he_o suspect_v the_o more_o be_v still_o behind_o and_o therefore_o he_o continue_v ing_z his_o own_o heart_n all_o his_o life_n long_o therefore_o let_v every_o professor_n look_v to_o it_o betwixt_o god_n and_o his_o conscience_n that_o he_o dally_v not_o with_o himself_o in_o this_o case_n for_o it_o he_o do_v then_o when_o god_n come_v with_o his_o privy_a search_n his_o
hypocrisy_n shall_v be_v discover_v and_o his_o nakedness_n shall_v be_v lay_v open_a in_o the_o view_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n to_o his_o eternal_a confusion_n three_o search_v say_v the_o prophet_n but_o not_o so_o content_a he_o force_v it_o again_o even_o search_v you_o in_o thus_o repeat_v and_o urge_v this_o exhortation_n the_o holy_a ghost_n give_v they_o and_o we_o to_o understand_v that_o in_o that_o this_o duty_n of_o search_v be_v both_o the_o begin_n of_o all_o true_a grace_n and_o the_o mean_n to_o stay_v god_n judgement_n and_o therefore_o be_v so_o pithelie_o and_o forceable_o urge_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n it_o must_v teach_v we_o all_o a_o necessary_a lesson_n namely_o to_o make_v great_a conscience_n of_o search_v ourselves_o first_o because_o god_n have_v so_o command_v and_o we_o be_v to_o make_v conscience_n of_o obedience_n to_o every_o commandment_n second_o because_o thereby_o we_o shall_v reap_v two_o so_o great_a commodity_n as_o first_o thereby_o we_o shall_v lay_v a_o sure_a foundation_n for_o the_o good_a work_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o second_o shall_v stay_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o his_o judgement_n from_o be_v execute_v upon_o us._n let_v we_o therefore_o hearken_v to_o this_o counsel_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n let_v we_o take_v the_o fan_n of_o the_o law_n and_o there_o with_o search_n and_o winnow_v our_o heart_n and_o life_n our_o heart_n for_o secret_a and_o hide_a corruption_n our_o life_n for_o commit_v of_o evil_n and_o omit_v of_o good_a do_v with_o your_o heart_n as_o man_n do_v with_o their_o wheat_n they_o will_v not_o suffer_v their_o corn_n to_o lie_v long_o in_o the_o chaff_n lest_o the_o chaff_n hurt_v it_o but_o commit_v it_o to_o the_o fan_n that_o the_o wind_n may_v separate_v they_o so_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n be_v but_o corn_n our_o sin_n and_o corruption_n be_v chaff_n look_v well_o and_o thou_o shall_v find_v in_o thyself_o much_o chaff_n and_o but_o little_a corn_n deserve_v evil_a of_o we_o and_o that_o therefore_o we_o ought_v malicious_o to_o requite_v he_o if_o any_o man_n make_v doubt_n of_o this_o and_o therefore_o think_v i_o speak_v too_o hardly_o of_o our_o church_n i_o will_v they_o deal_v plain_o and_o particular_o and_o rip_v up_o the_o sore_n of_o our_o nation_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v heal_v to_o the_o bottom_n the_o common_a sin_n of_o england_n wherewith_o the_o lord_n be_v requite_v be_v these_o first_o ignorance_n of_o god_n will_v and_o worship_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o that_o compel_a ignorance_n in_o many_o corner_n of_o our_o land_n which_o be_v to_o be_v pity_v because_o they_o want_v the_o mean_n but_o wilful_a and_o affect_a ignorance_n man_n be_v ignorant_a even_o because_o they_o will_v be_v ignorant_a mean_n of_o knowledge_n be_v never_o so_o plentiful_a and_o yet_o never_o more_o gross_a ignorance_n be_v not_o he_o wilful_o blind_a who_o will_v not_o open_v his_o eye_n in_o the_o light_n &_o can_v there_o be_v any_o darkness_n at_o noon_n day_n but_o it_o must_v be_v wilful_a but_o our_o nation_n be_v dark_a and_o blind_a in_o the_o sunshine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o gross_o ignorant_a when_o the_o gospel_n beat_v their_o ear_n and_o light_n shine_v round_o about_o they_o so_o as_o if_o they_o close_v not_o their_o eye_n and_o stop_v not_o their_o ear_n they_o can_v not_o but_o both_o hear_v and_o see_v who_o will_v look_v for_o ignorance_n after_o thirty_o five_o year_n preach_v and_o yet_o many_o be_v as_o ignorant_a as_o if_o they_o have_v be_v bear_v and_o bring_v up_o under_o
they_o shall_v fly_v away_o with_o the_o wind_n of_o god_n justice_n of_o all_o these_o point_n in_o order_n for_o the_o first_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v search_v yourselves_o the_o word_n be_v common_o read_v thus_o gather_v yourselves_o which_o though_o it_o be_v good_a for_o that_o in_o repentance_n a_o man_n gather_v himself_o &_o all_o his_o wit_n together_o which_o afore_o be_v disperse_v &_o wander_v up_o and_o down_o in_o vanity_n yet_o i_o rather_o allow_v their_o translation_n who_o read_v thus_o search_v or_o fan_v yourselves_o but_o either_o of_o they_o may_v stand_v because_o the_o word_n in_o the_o original_n do_v comprehend_v both_o signification_n yet_o it_o seem_v that_o to_o search_v or_o sift_v fit_v this_o place_n better_o consider_v the_o same_o manner_n of_o speech_n be_v afterwards_o continue_v in_o the_o word_n chaff_n so_o that_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n seem_v to_o be_v this_o search_v try_v and_o fan_v yourselves_o lest_o you_o be_v find_v light_a chaff_n and_o so_o fly_v away_o and_o be_v consume_v before_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n concern_v this_o duty_n of_o search_v let_v we_o observe_v first_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n urge_v the_o jew_n to_o repent_v use_v not_o the_o word_n repentance_n but_o bid_v they_o search_v themselves_o yet_o meaning_n he_o will_v have_v they_o to_o repent_v give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o no_o man_n can_v have_v true_a &_o sound_a repentance_n but_o he_o who_o have_v first_o of_o all_o search_v and_o examine_v himself_o and_o this_o stand_v with_o good_a reason_n for_o no_o man_n can_v repent_v who_o first_o of_o all_o do_v not_o know_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o wretchedness_n but_o no_o man_n can_v see_v into_o himself_o nor_o know_v himself_o but_o he_o that_o do_v diligent_o search_v himself_o so_o that_o the_o begin_n of_o all_o grace_n be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o search_v &_o try_v and_o fan_v himself_o that_o thereby_o he_o may_v know_v what_o be_v in_o himself_o that_o so_o upon_o the_o search_n see_v his_o fearful_a and_o damnable_a estate_n he_o may_v forsake_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o way_n and_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n thus_o speak_v the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o holy_a man_n 3_o let_v we_o search_v and_o try_v our_o way_n and_o mark_v what_o follow_v and_o turn_v again_o to_o the_o lord_n as_o though_o there_o be_v no_o turn_n again_o unto_o the_o lord_n but_o after_o a_o search_n of_o ourselves_o with_o this_o testimony_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n agree_v the_o testimony_n of_o all_o holy_a man_n conscience_n who_o all_o know_v that_o the_o first_o beginning_n of_o their_o turn_n unto_o the_o lord_n be_v a_o search_n of_o themselves_o let_v any_o repentant_a sinner_n ask_v his_o conscience_n &_o call_v to_o mind_v his_o first_o calling_n and_o conversion_n and_o he_o will_v remember_v that_o the_o first_o thing_n in_o his_o repentance_n be_v this_o that_o he_o search_v into_o himself_o and_o look_v narrow_o into_o his_o way_n and_o find_v his_o way_n dangerous_a &_o his_o case_n fearful_a do_v thereupon_o resolve_v to_o take_v a_o new_a course_n &_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n for_o pardon_n &_o mercy_n and_o for_o grace_n to_o enter_v into_o more_o holy_a and_o more_o comfortable_a course_n the_o man_n that_o pass_v upon_o ridge_n of_o mountain_n and_o side_n of_o hill_n or_o that_o go_v over_o a_o narrow_a bridge_n or_o some_o dangerous_a and_o steep_a rock_n at_o midnight_n fear_v not_o because_o he_o see_v no_o danger_n but_o bring_v the_o same_o man_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o let_v he_o see_v the_o narrow_a bridge_n he_o go_v over_o in_o the_o night_n under_o which_o run_v a_o violent_a stream_n and_o a_o bottomless_a gulf_n and_o the_o dangerous_a mountain_n and_o rock_n he_o pass_v over_o and_o he_o will_v wonder_v at_o his_o own_o boldness_n and_o shrink_v for_o fear_n to_o think_v of_o it_o and_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n venture_v the_o same_o way_n again_o for_o now_o he_o see_v the_o height_n of_o the_o mountain_n the_o steepenesse_n of_o the_o hill_n the_o cragginesse_n of_o the_o rock_n the_o fearful_a downfall_n and_o the_o furious_a violence_n of_o the_o stream_n underneath_o and_o thereby_o see_v the_o extreme_a danger_n which_o afore_o he_o see_v not_o therefore_o he_o wonder_v and_o rejoice_v that_o he_o have_v escape_v so_o great_a a_o danger_n and_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v draw_v to_o go_v that_o way_n in_o the_o day_n which_o he_o go_v most_o careless_o in_o the_o darkness_n of_o the_o night_n but_o seek_v another_o way_n though_o it_o shall_v be_v far_o about_o so_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o first_o estate_n which_o be_v natural_a and_o corrupt_a as_o we_o be_v breed_v and_o bear_v have_v a_o veil_n before_o his_o face_n so_o that_o he_o see_v nothing_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o the_o curse_n due_a for_o sin_n hell_n &_o damnation_n seek_v to_o devour_v he_o he_o see_v they_o not_o although_o live_v always_o in_o sin_n he_o walk_v in_o the_o very_a jaw_n of_o hell_n itself_o and_o because_o he_o see_v not_o this_o fearful_a danger_n therefore_o he_o refuse_v no_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o rush_v secure_o into_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n the_o night_n of_o impenitency_n and_o the_o mist_n of_o ignorance_n so_o blind_a his_o eye_n that_o he_o see_v not_o the_o narrow_a bridge_n of_o this_o life_n from_o which_o if_o he_o slide_v he_o fall_v immediate_o into_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o hell_n but_o when_o as_o god_n spirit_n have_v by_o the_o light_n of_o god_n word_n open_v his_o eye_n and_o touch_v his_o heart_n to_o consider_v his_o estate_n than_o he_o see_v the_o frail_a bridge_n of_o this_o narrow_a life_n and_o how_o little_a a_o step_n there_o be_v between_o he_o and_o damnation_n then_o he_o see_v hell_n open_a due_a for_o his_o sin_n and_o himself_o in_o the_o highway_n to_o it_o sin_n be_v the_o craggy_a rock_n and_o hell_n the_o gape_a gulf_n under_o it_o this_o life_n be_v the_o narrow_a bridge_n and_o damnation_n the_o stream_n that_o run_v under_o it_o then_o he_o wonder_v at_o his_o miserable_a estate_n admire_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o keep_v he_o from_o fall_v into_o the_o bottom_n of_o hell_n wonder_v at_o the_o presumptuous_a boldness_n of_o his_o corruption_n which_o so_o secure_o plod_v on_o towards_o destruction_n and_o be_v ashamed_a of_o himself_o and_o these_o his_o way_n he_o turn_v his_o heart_n to_o the_o god_n that_o save_v he_o from_o these_o danger_n and_o set_v himself_o into_o more_o holy_a way_n and_o more_o comfortable_a course_n and_o confess_v that_o ignorance_n make_v he_o bold_a and_o blindness_n make_v he_o so_o presumptuous_a but_o now_o he_o see_v the_o danger_n &_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n go_v the_o same_o way_n again_o &_o thus_o the_o search_a and_o see_v into_o the_o foulness_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o danger_n thereof_o be_v the_o first_o beginning_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o first_o step_n into_o grace_n this_o doctrine_n teach_v we_o what_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v general_o in_o the_o world_n all_o man_n say_v they_o believe_v and_o have_v repent_v long_o ago_o but_o try_v it_o well_o and_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o the_o body_n of_o our_o nation_n but_o a_o lip_n faith_n and_o a_o lip_n repentance_n for_o even_o when_o they_o say_v so_o they_o be_v blind_a and_o ignorant_a of_o their_o own_o estate_n and_o know_v not_o themselves_o that_o because_o they_o be_v baptize_v and_o live_v in_o the_o church_n therefore_o they_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n &_o in_o very_o good_a estate_n when_o as_o they_o never_o yet_o be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o be_v so_o far_o from_o it_o that_o they_o never_o yet_o see_v any_o sin_n in_o themselves_o whereof_o they_o shall_v repent_v as_o a_o man_n travel_v in_o the_o night_n see_v no_o danger_n but_o plod_v on_o without_o fear_n so_o the_o most_o part_n of_o our_o common_a people_n in_o the_o night_n of_o their_o ignorance_n think_v and_o presume_v they_o love_v and_o fear_n god_n and_o love_v their_o neighbour_n and_o that_o they_o have_v ever_o do_v so_o nay_o it_o be_v the_o common_a opinion_n that_o a_o man_n may_v do_v so_o by_o nature_n and_o that_o he_o be_v not_o worthy_a to_o live_v who_o do_v not_o love_n god_n with_o all_o his_o heart_n and_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ._n but_o alas_o poor_a simple_a soul_n they_o never_o know_v what_o sin_n be_v never_o search_v nor_o see_v into_o their_o own_o heart_n with_o the_o light_n of_o god_n law_n for_o if_o they_o have_v they_o shall_v have_v see_v such_o a_o sea_n of_o corruption_n that_o then_o they_o will_v confess_v it_o to_o be_v the_o hard_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o love_n god_n &_o to_o
same_o grave_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o death_n have_v like_o dominion_n over_o they_o all_o 3._o but_o afterward_o at_o the_o last_o day_n at_o god_n great_a harvest_n and_o great_a winnow_v time_n he_o then_o with_o the_o wind_n of_o his_o power_n sever_v they_o asunder_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n wheat_n from_o the_o chaff_n sheep_n from_o the_o goat_n and_o separate_v they_o never_o to_o be_v mingle_v again_o for_o ever_o and_o ever_o and_o then_o with_o the_o wind_n of_o his_o wrath_n he_o blow_v the_o chaff_n into_o fire_n unquenchable_a and_o with_o his_o love_a favour_n gather_v his_o wheat_n into_o the_o everlasting_a and_o glorious_a garner_n of_o heaven_n so_o then_o the_o first_o sever_v they_o in_o affection_n the_o second_o in_o soul_n for_o a_o time_n the_o three_o actual_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o now_o of_o these_o three_o winnow_v time_n the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v here_o proper_o of_o the_o second_o namely_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n judgement_n so_o that_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o metaphor_n be_v this_o search_v yourselves_o and_o repent_v betimes_o lest_o god_n come_v upon_o you_o with_o some_o fearful_a judgement_n because_o you_o have_v so_o long_o contemn_v the_o fan_n of_o the_o word_n and_o find_v you_o too_o light_a to_o abide_v the_o trial_n do_v take_v you_o away_o in_o the_o judgement_n and_o cast_v you_o into_o hell_n for_o as_o sure_a as_o the_o fan_n of_o the_o word_n have_v make_v difference_n of_o you_o which_o be_v chaff_n and_o which_o be_v wheat_n so_o sure_o shall_v the_o fan_n of_o his_o judgement_n blow_v away_o the_o chaff_n to_o hell_n and_o damnation_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o meaning_n now_o for_o the_o use_n for_o we_o in_o england_n the_o case_n stand_v thus_o our_o church_n doubtless_o be_v god_n corn_n field_n and_o we_o be_v the_o corn_n heap_n of_o god_n and_o those_o brownist_n and_o sectary_n be_v blind_a and_o besot_v who_o can_v see_v that_o the_o church_n of_o england_n be_v a_o godly_a heap_n of_o god_n corn_n but_o withal_o we_o must_v confess_v we_o be_v full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o profane_a and_o wicked_a hypocrite_n who_o heart_n and_o mind_n abound_v in_o sin_n and_o rebellion_n and_o many_o of_o our_o best_a professor_n be_v also_o too_o full_a of_o chaff_n that_o be_v of_o corruption_n and_o do_v give_v themselves_o too_o much_o liberty_n in_o many_o sin_n but_o alas_o the_o pure_a wheat_n how_o thin_a be_v it_o scatter_v how_o hard_o to_o find_v a_o man_n at_o least_o a_o family_n which_o dedicate_v themselves_o to_o the_o lord_n in_o holy_a and_o sincere_a obedience_n and_o labour_n to_o make_v conscience_n of_o all_o sin_n now_o therefore_o see_v we_o be_v god_n corn_n field_n and_o we_o have_v some_o pure_a wheat_n among_o much_o chaff_n therefore_o god_n will_v winnow_v we_o to_o find_v out_o the_o corn_n if_o he_o have_v but_o one_o corn_n of_o wheat_n in_o a_o handful_n of_o chaff_n but_o one_o good_a man_n of_o many_o he_o will_v stir_v all_o the_o heap_n for_o those_o few_o corner_n he_o will_v not_o care_v to_o blow_v all_o the_o chaff_n to_o hell_n to_o find_v out_o those_o few_o corn_n of_o wheat_n to_o lay_v they_o up_o in_o heaven_n so_o that_o out_o of_o all_o question_n england_n be_v so_o full_a of_o chaff_n must_v look_v to_o be_v winnow_v now_o for_o the_o first_o fan_n of_o his_o word_n it_o have_v be_v use_v in_o this_o land_n these_o five_o and_o thirty_o year_n and_o that_o as_o powerful_o and_o as_o plentiful_o as_o any_o where_o in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o alas_o many_o be_v more_o godless_a more_o ignorant_a more_o profane_a than_o ever_o they_o be_v yea_o wickedness_n grow_v and_o the_o chaff_n increase_v above_o the_o wheat_n be_v sure_a therefore_o that_o god_n will_v bring_v his_o second_o fan_n upon_o we_o because_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o first_o and_o mild_a and_o gentle_a fan_n of_o his_o word_n to_o try_v and_o search_v we_o therefore_o we_o will_v bring_v the_o fearful_a fan_n of_o his_o judgement_n and_o with_o it_o he_o will_v blow_v soul_n and_o body_n into_o hell_n with_o those_o our_o sin_n and_o corruption_n which_o we_o will_v not_o suffer_v the_o fan_n of_o god_n word_n to_o blow_v from_o us._n the_o first_o have_v so_o long_o blow_v in_o vain_a that_o the_o second_o must_v needs_o come_v unto_o we_o and_o it_o have_v already_o begin_v to_o blow_v three_o or_o four_o blast_n have_v blow_v over_o we_o famine_n pestilence_n earthquake_n fire_n water_n wind_n these_o have_v so_o blow_v some_o of_o we_o that_o they_o have_v take_v away_o a_o great_a number_n of_o we_o for_o we_o that_o remain_v week_n this_o only_a remain_v that_o we_o strengthen_v ourselves_o by_o grace_n to_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v against_o the_o next_o blast_n for_o come_v it_o will_v and_o when_o it_o come_v no_o wealth_n nor_o worldly_a thing_n can_v enable_v we_o to_o endure_v it_o only_a faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n will_v stand_v at_o that_o day_n now_o therefore_o in_o that_o so_o fearful_a a_o fan_a abide_v we_o see_v it_o be_v so_o near_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o blast_n already_o past_a over_o we_o which_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o forerunner_n of_o a_o great_a tempest_n what_o shall_v be_v our_o care_n except_o we_o care_v not_o to_o be_v blow_v body_n and_o soul_n into_o hell_n but_o to_o labour_v to_o eschew_v this_o fearful_a fan_n of_o god_n wrath_n or_o at_o least_o if_o it_o come_v upon_o we_o that_o it_o may_v not_o blow_v we_o to_o hell_n but_o hasten_v we_o to_o heaven_n if_o thy_o heart_n be_v touch_v to_o ask_v how_o this_o may_v be_v i_o answer_v thou_o only_o to_o follow_v the_o prophet_n advice_n in_o this_o place_n by_o search_v and_o try_v ourselves_o the_o way_n to_o escape_v god_n trial_n be_v to_o try_v thyself_o &_o to_o escape_v god_n iugdement_n to_o be_v a_o judge_n to_o thy_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o the_o way_n to_o escape_v the_o fearful_a fan_n of_o god_n be_v to_o fan_v their_o own_o heart_n by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o whosoever_o the_o first_o fan_n that_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n do_v work_v upon_o these_o man_n be_v never_o blow_v away_o with_o the_o fan_n of_o god_n judgement_n o_o then_o entertain_v the_o word_n of_o god_n into_o thy_o heart_n submit_v thy_o soul_n unto_o it_o let_v it_o pierce_v and_o try_v &_o ransack_v thy_o heart_n and_o lay_v before_o thou_o thy_o wretched_a estate_n by_o thy_o sin_n and_o when_o thou_o see_v thy_o nakedness_n and_o misery_n confess_v it_o bewail_v it_o and_o be_v humble_v for_o it_o cry_v thou_o untouched_a as_o over_o lot_n in_o the_o destruction_n of_o sodom_n or_o else_o shall_v fan_v out_o all_o thy_o corruption_n and_o blow_v thou_o up_o to_o heaven_n to_o be_v lay_v up_o as_o pure_a wheat_n in_o the_o heavenly_a garner_n and_o mansion_n of_o glory_n which_o christ_n ascribe_v to_o prepare_v for_o thou_o now_o then_o among_o those_o many_o business_n with_o which_o this_o world_n do_v cumber_v every_o of_o we_o all_o which_o shall_v perish_v with_o the_o world_n itself_o let_v we_o good_a brethren_n spare_v sometime_o for_o this_o great_a business_n martha_n may_v be_v ruin_n o_o therefore_o how_o happy_a be_v we_o if_o we_o can_v entertain_v this_o doctrine_n &_o practice_v it_o for_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v prevent_v god_n judgement_n we_o shall_v continue_v the_o gospel_n to_o this_o land_n and_o preserve_v this_o glorious_a nation_n from_o be_v destroy_v or_o dispeople_v by_o some_o fearful_a judgement_n belove_a fair_a you_o come_v hither_o to_o this_o place_n purposely_o to_o buy_v and_o sell_v and_o thereby_o to_o better_v your_o estate_n in_o this_o world_n how_o happy_a then_o be_v you_o if_o beside_o the_o good_a market_n you_o make_v for_o
