consist_v in_o the_o desert_n of_o punishment_n or_o that_o which_o consist_v in_o the_o voluntary_a appointment_n of_o it_o unto_o punishment_n or_o both_o answer_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v pardon_v must_v needs_o die_v in_o the_o womb_n that_o conceive_v it_o but_o as_o it_o be_v conceive_v by_o his_o temptation_n so_o be_v it_o bring_v forth_o by_o his_o industry_n and_o diligence_n second_o natural_a corruption_n itself_o be_v of_o a_o thrive_a grow_a nature_n if_o any_o lust_n have_v seize_v strong_o on_o the_o thought_n and_o boil_v there_o it_o will_v vent_v itself_o in_o discourse_n a_o bad_a heart_n as_o well_o as_o a_o bad_a liver_n will_v break_v out_o at_o the_o lip_n and_o if_o the_o discourse_n be_v poisonous_a the_o venom_n will_v spread_v itself_o into_o the_o life_n and_o conversation_n for_o out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o the_o heart_n the_o mouth_n speak_v and_o evil_a word_n corrupt_v good_a manner_n sinful_a thought_n form_v themselves_o into_o word_n and_o word_n will_v consolidate_v themselves_o into_o action_n and_o then_o sin_n be_v perfect_v and_o have_v attain_v its_o full_a growth_n and_o if_o you_o will_v know_v what_o the_o next_o degree_n or_o step_n be_v that_o sin_n take_v the_o apostle_n st._n james_n tell_v you_o jam._n 1.15_o when_o lust_n have_v conceive_v it_o bring_v forth_o sin_n and_o sin_n when_o it_o be_v perfect_v bring_v forth_o death_n you_o can_v no_o more_o set_v bound_n to_o your_o corruption_n than_o to_o the_o rage_a sea_n nor_o say_v to_o it_o hitherto_o shall_v thy_o proud_a wave_n go_v and_o no_o further_o thought_n be_v set_v on_o fire_n of_o hell_n this_o will_v inflame_v the_o tongue_n and_o that_o will_v inflame_v the_o life_n and_o unless_o god_n infinite_a mercy_n prevent_v this_o burn_a will_v stop_v no_o where_o short_a of_o everlasting_a burn_n ask_v but_o your_o own_o experience_n this_o have_v you_o not_o often_o find_v it_o so_o have_v not_o the_o devil_n drill_v you_o on_o from_o little_a sin_n to_o great_a sin_n and_o from_o these_o to_o far_o great_a abomination_n believe_v it_o there_o be_v a_o bottomless_a deceit_n in_o every_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o desperate_a issue_n of_o it_o that_o if_o once_o you_o come_v to_o account_v any_o sin_n small_a you_o will_v soon_o reckon_v the_o great_a sin_n to_o be_v no_o more_o we_o common_o reckon_v the_o greatness_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o abruptness_n of_o our_o advance_n to_o it_o possible_o it_o will_v seem_v a_o horrid_a thing_n at_o the_o first_o rise_v of_o a_o temptation_n in_o our_o heart_n if_o we_o shall_v present_o perpetrate_v the_o utmost_a of_o it_o into_o act_n therefore_o the_o method_n of_o sin_n be_v more_o smooth_a and_o deceitful_a it_o count_v a_o sinful_a thought_n a_o little_a transgression_n and_o sinful_a discourse_n to_o have_v but_o a_o little_a more_o guilt_n in_o it_o than_o a_o sinful_a thought_n and_o sinful_a action_n to_o have_v but_o a_o little_a more_o guilt_n in_o they_o than_o sinful_a word_n a_o great_a sin_n but_o in_o a_o little_a degree_n exceed_v a_o less_o and_o so_o compare_v sin_n with_o sin_n and_o not_o with_o the_o law_n we_o at_o length_n come_v by_o invisible_a advances_n to_o look_v upon_o the_o great_a impiety_n in_o the_o world_n to_o be_v but_o little_a sin_n and_o so_o to_o commit_v they_o if_o satan_n prevail_v with_o we_o to_o go_v with_o he_o one_o step_v out_o of_o our_o way_n we_o be_v in_o danger_n to_o stop_v no_o where_o till_o we_o come_v to_o the_o height_n of_o all_o profaneness_n he_o will_v make_v we_o take_v a_o second_o and_o a_o three_o and_o so_o to_o travel_v on_o to_o destruction_n for_o each_o of_o these_o be_v but_o one_o step_n the_o last_o step_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o one_o step_n as_o well_o as_o the_o first_o and_o if_o the_o devil_n prevail_v with_o we_o to_o take_v one_o step_n why_o shall_v he_o not_o prevail_v with_o we_o to_o take_v the_o last_o step_n as_o well_o as_o the_o first_o step_n see_v it_o be_v but_o one_o your_o second_o sin_n no_o more_o exceed_v your_o first_o than_o your_o first_o do_v your_o duty_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n we_o shall_v not_o therefore_o account_v any_o sin_n small_a but_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o the_o spawn_n of_o all_o the_o vile_a abomination_n and_o as_o you_o will_v abhor_v death_n and_o hell_n so_o abhor_v the_o least_o sin_n infamy_n be_v such_o as_o make_v he_o that_o commit_v they_o a_o scandalous_a person_n and_o these_o be_v common_o repute_v great_a and_o cry_a sin_n by_o the_o world_n if_o a_o man_n be_v a_o swearer_n or_o a_o drunkard_n a_o
of_o thy_o vain_a thought_n and_o of_o thy_o idle_a word_n or_o thou_o must_v for_o ever_o perish_v under_o they_o four_o if_o there_o be_v so_o great_a evil_n and_o use_v 4_o danger_n in_o little_a sin_n hence_o see_v then_o what_o cause_n we_o have_v to_o bemoan_v and_o humble_v ourselves_o before_o god_n with_o tear_n in_o our_o eye_n and_o sorrow_n in_o our_o heart_n even_o for_o our_o little_a sin_n we_o shall_v never_o approach_v before_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n in_o prayer_n but_o before_o the_o close_a thereof_o we_o shall_v in_o confession_n mourn_v over_o and_o beg_v think_v with_o yourself_o now_o i_o ought_v to_o be_v as_o fervent_a as_o affectionate_a and_o penitent_a as_o if_o i_o be_v confess_v drunkenness_n or_o murder_n for_o possible_o the_o little_a sin_n motion_n without_o intermission_n or_o cessation_n and_o yet_o every_o one_o of_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o thought_n of_o our_o heart_n be_v only_a â—vil_n and_o that_o continual_o gen._n 6.5_o 6.5_o gen._n 6.5_o certain_o do_v we_o serious_o consider_v what_o â—t_a be_v we_o say_v when_o we_o confess_v to_o god_n â—hat_n our_o whole_a life_n be_v nothing_o but_o one_o continue_a course_n of_o sin_n those_o moment_n every_o one_o of_o which_o bring_v fresh_a gild_n upon_o â—s_n will_v not_o slide_v away_o so_o pleasant_o with_o we_o as_o they_o do_v but_o because_o our_o sin_n seem_v small_a to_o we_o we_o regard_v they_o not_o and_o so_o our_o time_n waste_v and_o our_o gild_n increase_v till_o eternity_n put_v a_o period_n anâ—_n full_a end_n to_o those_o sin_n to_o which_o little_a sin_n â—_o flow_v from_o when_o at_o any_o time_n we_o be_v sensible_a of_o a_o vain_a and_o sinful_a though_o rise_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n we_o shall_v trace_v â—_o along_o to_o the_o light_n the_o damn_a in_o hell_n have_v not_o worse_a nature_n in_o they_o than_o we_o have_v there_o be_v no_o sin_n how_o horrid_a so_o ever_o that_o they_o commit_v on_o earth_n or_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o commit_v now_o in_o hell_n but_o we_o also_o shall_v run_v into_o it_o do_v not_o god_n powerful_a restraint_n withhold_v we_o now_o do_v little_a sin_n proceed_v from_o such_o a_o corrupt_a and_o curse_a fountain_n and_o have_v we_o not_o then_o great_a cause_n to_o be_v humble_v before_o the_o lord_n for_o they_o and_o say_v lord_n here_o be_v sin_n a_o little_a sin_n it_o be_v but_o yet_o it_o proceed_v from_o a_o heart_n that_o have_v in_o it_o the_o spawn_n of_o all_o the_o great_a and_o vile_a sin_n that_o ever_o be_v or_o can_v be_v commit_v and_o that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o vain_a thought_n and_o not_o blasphemy_n murder_n or_o adultery_n or_o any_o of_o the_o great_a and_o most_o cry_a sin_n that_o ever_o be_v commit_v in_o the_o world_n be_v to_o be_v acknowledge_v and_o attribute_v only_o to_o the_o powerful_a restraint_n of_o thy_o free_a grace_n for_o the_o same_o corrupt_a fountain_n that_o send_v forth_o this_o vain_a thought_n and_o that_o idle_a word_n will_v have_v send_v forth_o blasphemy_n
and_o quicken_v it_o the_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v inquire_v into_o be_v how_o god_n keep_v man_n back_o from_o presumptuous_a sin_n even_o then_o when_o their_o proneness_n to_o they_o be_v most_o violent_a and_o eager_a now_o for_o satisfaction_n to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v god_n have_v two_o hand_n whereby_o he_o hold_v man_n back_o from_o their_o sin_n first_o the_o strong_a hand_n of_o his_o providence_n second_o the_o powerful_a hand_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o sometime_o god_n put_v both_o these_o hand_n to_o it_o in_o a_o mix_a way_n of_o providence_n and_o grace_n together_o these_o be_v as_o it_o be_v god_n left_a hand_n and_o his_o right_a hand_n by_o the_o one_o he_o overrule_v the_o action_n and_o by_o the_o other_o he_o overrule_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o both_o almighty_o sin_n god_n by_o his_o providence_n keep_v man_n from_o sin_n first_o god_n frequent_o withhold_v man_n from_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n by_o a_o strong_a hand_n of_o providence_n upon_o they_o frequent_o he_o do_v so_o and_o that_o he_o do_v not_o so_o always_o be_v not_o because_o he_o be_v defective_a either_o in_o power_n or_o goodness_n whereby_o he_o shall_v restrain_v they_o from_o evil_a but_o because_o he_o be_v infinite_a in_o wisdom_n whereby_o he_o know_v how_o to_o bring_v good_a out_o of_o evil_a and_o therefore_o before_o i_o proceed_v to_o lay_v down_o those_o several_a way_n that_o providence_n take_v to_o hinder_v the_o commission_n of_o sin_n i_o shall_v premise_v this_o that_o it_o be_v no_o taint_n at_o all_o to_o the_o pure_a holiness_n of_o god_n that_o he_o do_v by_o his_o providence_n concur_v to_o those_o wickedness_n of_o man_n that_o if_o he_o please_v he_o may_v prevent_v and_o hinder_v that_o god_n do_v so_o be_v clear_a for_o providence_n be_v not_o so_o often_o a_o restraint_n from_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v a_o powerful_a temptation_n unto_o sin_n it_o be_v a_o temptation_n as_o it_o administer_v object_n and_o opportunity_n and_o as_o it_o suit_n they_o both_o unto_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n thus_o cain_n kill_v his_o brother_n abel_n by_o a_o providence_n and_o achan_n steal_v the_o wedge_n of_o gold_n judas_n betray_v his_o master_n and_o the_o jew_n crucify_a he_o by_o a_o providence_n yea_o all_o that_o villainy_n that_o ever_o be_v act_v under_o the_o sun_n be_v all_o bring_v forth_o out_o of_o the_o curse_a womb_n of_o man_n lust_n and_o make_v fruitful_a by_o god_n providence_n neither_o be_v it_o hard_o to_o conceive_v how_o god_n shall_v without_o sin_n himself_o concur_v to_o sin_n in_o other_o since_o his_o most_o sovereign_a will_n be_v above_o all_o law_n can_v possible_o fall_v under_o any_o guilt_n we_o be_v oblige_v to_o keep_v back_o man_n from_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n when_o it_o be_v in_o our_o power_n to_o do_v it_o but_o no_o such_o obligation_n lie_v upon_o god_n though_o he_o can_v easy_o keep_v all_o wicked_a man_n in_o the_o world_n from_o ever_o sin_v more_o yea_o though_o they_o be_v so_o tie_v up_o that_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o sin_n without_o his_o permission_n and_o concurrence_n yet_o he_o permit_v wise_o concur_v holy_o and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o at_o last_o punish_v just_o in_o brief_a god_n do_v whatever_o man_n do_v for_o as_o the_o prophet_n say_v he_o work_v all_o our_o work_n in_o we_o and_o for_o we_o and_o in_o he_o we_o live_v move_v and_o have_v our_o being_n and_o yet_o in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o action_n man_n sin_n and_o god_n be_v holy_a because_o man_n act_v contrary_a to_o that_o law_n which_o god_n have_v set_v he_o but_o god_n himself_o be_v subject_a to_o no_o law_n beside_o his_o own_o sovereign_a will_n and_o where_o there_o be_v no_o law_n there_o be_v no_o transgression_n as_o the_o now_o there_o be_v four_o remarkable_a way_n whereby_o the_o alwise_a providence_n of_o god_n hinder_v the_o commission_n of_o a_o sin_n even_o then_o when_o man_n be_v most_o bend_v and_o eager_a upon_o it_o sinner_n providence_n prevent_v sin_n by_o shorten_v the_o life_n of_o the_o sinner_n first_o sometime_o where_o his_o grace_n do_v not_o sanctify_v the_o heart_n his_o providence_n shorten_v the_o life_n of_o the_o sinner_n where_o he_o do_v not_o cleanse_v the_o fountain_n yet_o there_o he_o remove_v the_o foundation_n of_o a_o sin_n that_o be_v he_o take_v away_o the_o very_a life_n and_o be_v of_o the_o sinner_n many_o time_n when_o wicked_a man_n have_v imagine_v some_o presumptuous_a sin_n and_o go_v big_a with_o it_o god_n sudden_o cut_v they_o off_o from_o the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n and_o give_v they_o no_o space_n to_o bring_v it_o forth_o unless_o it_o be_v in_o hell_n among_o these_o devil_n that_o inspire_v it_o psal_n 64.6_o 7._o say_v the_o psalmist_n there_o they_o search_v out_o iniquity_n they_o accomplish_v a_o diligent_a search_n but_o what_o follow_v god_n shall_v shoot_v at_o they_o with_o a_o arrow_n sudden_o shall_v they_o be_v be_v resolve_v to_o glorify_v both_o of_o these_o attribute_n of_o his_o in_o their_o several_a demand_n this_o now_o put_v he_o upon_o ransack_v of_o the_o deep_a counsel_n that_o ever_o lodge_v in_o his_o heart_n even_o of_o a_o adore_v mediator_n in_o who_o justice_n receive_v full_a satisfaction_n and_o mercy_n triumph_v in_o a_o full_a pardon_n and_o both_o be_v infinite_o glorious_a for_o this_o end_n god_n send_v down_o his_o son_n from_o heaven_n to_o earth_n to_o become_v a_o propitiation_n for_o we_o and_o so_o through_o the_o shed_n of_o his_o blood_n to_o obtain_v remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n for_o we_o god_n mercy_n and_o his_o belove_a son_n can_v not_o rest_v together_o in_o his_o bosom_n and_o therefore_o his_o purpose_n of_o pardon_v sin_n be_v so_o efficacious_a that_o to_o make_v room_n for_o the_o display_v of_o his_o mercy_n he_o send_v his_o own_o son_n out_o of_o heaven_n never_o to_o enter_v again_o there_o till_o by_o his_o merit_n and_o that_o dung_n and_o filth_n of_o corruption_n under_o which_o it_o lay_v bury_v and_o then_o it_o flow_v forth_o into_o actual_a grace_n habitual_a and_o exciting_a grace_n must_v both_o concur_v to_o the_o produce_v of_o actual_a grace_n as_o necessary_o as_o there_o must_v be_v the_o concurrence_n both_o of_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o of_o life_n in_o the_o seed_n to_o produce_v a_o that_o there_o be_v true_o any_o forgetfulness_n in_o god_n no_o his_o memory_n retain_v every_o sin_n we_o have_v commit_v sure_a and_o firm_a than_o if_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v write_v in_o leave_n of_o brass_n but_o god_n speak_v here_o as_o he_o do_v elsewhere_o frequent_o in_o scripture_n by_o a_o gracious_a condescension_n and_o after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o it_o be_v to_o be_v interpret_v only_o by_o the_o effect_n i_o will_v not_o remember_v their_o sin_n that_o be_v i_o will_v deal_v so_o merciful_o with_o they_o as_o if_o indeed_o i_o do_v not_o remember_v the_o least_o of_o their_o provocation_n i_o will_v be_v to_o they_o as_o one_o that_o have_v utter_o forget_v all_o their_o injury_n so_o that_o this_o not_o remember_v of_o sin_n deny_v not_o the_o eminent_a act_n of_o god_n knowledge_n but_o only_o the_o transient_a act_n of_o his_o justice_n and_o be_v no_o more_o than_o his_o promise_a not_o to_o punish_v sin_n as_o if_o god_n have_v say_v i_o will_v not_o be_v avenge_v on_o they_o nor_o punish_v they_o for_o their_o sin_n and_o here_o we_o may_v see_v what_o abundant_a security_n god_n give_v his_o people_n that_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v implead_v for_o those_o sin_n which_o once_o they_o have_v attain_v the_o pardon_n of_o they_o be_v blot_v out_o of_o his_o book_n of_o remembrance_n and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o fear_v he_o will_v accuse_v they_o without_o book_n he_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o be_v utter_o forget_v and_o shall_v never_o be_v remember_v by_o he_o against_o they_o any_o more_o three_o consider_v the_o impulsive_a cause_n that_o move_v god_n hand_n as_o it_o be_v to_o blot_v out_o our_o transgression_n and_o that_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n without_o himself_o but_o say_v god_n i_o will_v do_v it_o because_o i_o will_v do_v it_o and_o indeed_o this_o be_v the_o royal_a prerogative_n of_o god_n alone_o to_o render_v his_o will_n for_o his_o reason_n for_o because_o his_o will_n be_v altogether_o
