much_o from_o that_o law_n of_o the_o regenerate_a part_n which_o fight_v against_o the_o law_n of_o sin_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v we_o know_v it_o because_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a moment_n therefore_o i_o regenerate_a will_v show_v you_o the_o difference_n in_o these_o five_o thing_n first_o of_o all_o when_o the_o natural_a conscience_n the_o law_n that_o the_o apostle_n there_o speak_v of_o which_o show_v the_o effect_n in_o the_o conscience_n when_o that_o strive_v against_o the_o law_n in_o the_o member_n it_o be_v no_o more_o but_o the_o contention_n of_o that_o one_o part_n of_o the_o soul._n there_o may_v be_v a_o light_n which_o discover_v that_o which_o be_v evil_a which_o may_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o approve_v combatant_n of_o that_o which_o manner_n there_o may_v be_v many_o spark_n of_o truth_n which_o may_v lie_v in_o the_o conscience_n of_o a_o natural_a man_n there_o he_o see_v they_o and_o observe_v they_o but_o they_o do_v not_o enlighten_v the_o whole_a soul_n that_o be_v this_o light_n be_v not_o shed_v into_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n the_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v not_o wrought_v upon_o by_o it_o therefore_o contend_v with_o god_n for_o it_o as_o a_o matter_n of_o such_o great_a moment_n whereas_o it_o be_v the_o pretious_a mercy_n of_o all_o other_o it_o be_v the_o immediate_a door_n that_o open_v into_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n and_o then_o no_o good_a thing_n can_v be_v withhold_v from_o you_o foâ—_n it_o be_v your_o sin_n that_o keep_v good_a thing_n from_o you_o now_o if_o your_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o what_o need_v you_o fear_v either_o disease_n or_o death_n or_o revile_n and_o disgrace_n for_o your_o profession_n or_o imprisonment_n or_o poverty_n if_o you_o have_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o your_o sin_n you_o may_v enjoy_v the_o prosperity_n you_o have_v free_o and_o as_o for_o cross_n either_o you_o shall_v be_v free_v from_o they_o or_o else_o they_o shall_v be_v as_o serpent_n without_o a_o sting_n or_o as_o great_a bulk_n without_o burden_n and_o weight_n this_o you_o shall_v have_v if_o you_o have_v the_o forgiveness_n fresh_a so_o do_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o set_v a_o deep_a die_v upon_o all_o our_o action_n put_v a_o grace_n upon_o they_o and_o make_v they_o beautiful_a nothing_o without_o it_o will_v hold_v trial_n every_o thing_n that_o have_v the_o tincture_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n will_v hold_v good_a it_o set_v the_o stamp_n of_o holiness_n weakness_n insensible_a and_o be_v such_o as_o can_v be_v feel_v and_o this_o be_v when_o man_n change_v their_o opinion_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v when_o they_o have_v think_v otherwise_o of_o it_o the_o second_o degree_n be_v a_o particular_a weakness_n and_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v general_o strong_a and_o yet_o weak_a in_o some_o part_n as_o for_o example_n a_o ship_n may_v be_v strong_a build_v or_o general_o strong_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o leak_n in_o it_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o part_n because_o it_o have_v that_o in_o it_o which_o will_v at_o last_o destroy_v it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o christian_a if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o leak_n that_o be_v a_o weakness_n in_o one_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n he_o be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n therefore_o a_o man_n must_v take_v heed_n of_o all_o weakness_n though_o a_o man_n may_v be_v general_o strong_a that_o he_o be_v not_o weak_a in_o some_o thing_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v these_o the_o first_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o 1._o inner_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o will_v fit_v we_o for_o many_o employment_n that_o be_v it_o will_v make_v we_o go_v through_o much_o work_n with_o great_a ease_n to_o perform_v the_o weighty_a duty_n in_o religion_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o otherwise_o we_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v and_o this_o shall_v persuade_v man_n the_o rather_o to_o pray_v earnest_o for_o this_o because_o god_n reward_v man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n that_o be_v it_o be_v not_o for_o beauty_n riches_n or_o dignity_n that_o move_v god_n to_o give_v grace_n and_o glory_n unto_o any_o but_o according_a to_o their_o work_n a_o good_a reason_n it_o be_v therefore_o to_o persuade_v man_n to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inner_a man_n that_o they_o may_v be_v able_a to_o go_v through_o great_a matter_n for_o god_n and_o that_o with_o great_a strength_n and_o this_o shall_v make_v man_n to_o beg_v the_o spirit_n because_o he_o work_v in_o we_o effectual_o to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o we_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o reason_n why_o you_o shall_v desire_v to_o be_v strong_a 2._o in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o bring_v most_o comfort_n and_o chearfulnes_n into_o the_o natural_a man_n do_v not_o hate_v the_o evil_a of_o sin_n otherwise_o then_o as_o it_o bring_v punishment_n second_o i_o do_v delight_n in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o be_v howsoever_o i_o be_o captivate_v and_o violent_o carry_v unto_o the_o commit_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o be_v against_o the_o desire_n of_o my_o soul_n he_o have_v no_o pleasure_n he_o can_v take_v no_o delight_n in_o it_o for_o his_o delight_n be_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n look_v upon_o the_o law_n of_o god_n as_o burden_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v not_o submit_v himself_o unto_o they_o because_o he_o be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n he_o promise_v but_o he_o perform_v not_o he_o yield_v and_o yield_v not_o that_o be_v to_o some_o thing_n but_o no_o to_o every_o thing_n &_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o last_o difference_n betwixt_o natural_a strength_n and_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n second_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v to_o be_v desire_v above_o all_o thing_n then_o in_o the_o second_o place_n use._n it_o may_v serve_v for_o exhortation_n to_o all_o man_n that_o they_o will_v labour_v to_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o that_o they_o will_v now_o at_o the_o last_o gather_v the_o fragment_n of_o their_o thought_n and_o desire_n which_o have_v be_v former_o set_v strength_n but_o i_o beseech_v you_o above_o all_o thing_n labour_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o be_v the_o folly_n weakness_n and_o sickness_n of_o man_n they_o look_v all_o without_o door_n and_o upon_o outward_a thing_n that_o be_v to_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o they_o seldom_o or_o never_o look_v within_o at_o all_o that_o be_v to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n oh_o that_o i_o can_v persuade_v you_o as_o i_o say_v before_o to_o gather_v up_o your_o thought_n and_o desire_n together_o and_o set_v the_o soul_n in_o assurance_n of_o grace_n that_o you_o may_v mortify_v these_o inordinate_a affection_n which_o keep_v back_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o covetousness_n pride_n pleasure_n self-love_n vain_a glory_n and_o the_o like_a then_o it_o will_v be_v a_o easy_a work_n and_o no_o burden_n unto_o you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o here_o man_n stick_v the_o way_n be_v too_o narrow_a it_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o persuade_v man_n to_o it_o that_o be_v to_o make_v they_o believe_v there_o be_v such_o excellency_n in_o the_o one_o &_o not_o in_o the_o other_o that_o grace_n be_v the_o better_a part_n therefore_o that_o i_o may_v the_o better_o prevail_v with_o you_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o motive_n to_o incite_v more_o of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o have_v the_o more_o light_a and_o joy_n now_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n bring_v the_o more_o comfort_n be_v because_o it_o be_v the_o great_a faculty_n and_o the_o great_a the_o faculty_n be_v the_o great_a be_v the_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n as_o for_o example_n take_v a_o man_n that_o be_v trouble_v in_o mind_n none_o so_o humble_a none_o so_o penitent_a none_o so_o sorrowful_a as_o he_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o a_o sound_a heart_n will_v bear_v his_o infirmity_n but_o a_o wound_a in_o these_o outward_a thing_n it_o be_v but_o according_a to_o the_o opinion_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o be_v the_o comfort_n be_v no_o more_o than_o they_o be_v esteem_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n if_o the_o inward_a man_n do_v not_o esteem_v they_o as_o worthy_a the_o rejoice_v in_o they_o will_v not_o bring_v comfort_n again_o all_o the_o pain_n and_o labour_n and_o all_o thing_n else_o and_o immovable_a that_o be_v it_o will_v so_o establish_v the_o heart_n in_o grace_n that_o he_o will_v stand_v firm_a unto_o christ_n in_o all_o estate_n it_o be_v with_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sea_n though_o he_o strength_n of_o the_o stream_n run_v one_o way_n yet_o the_o wind_n blow_v contrary_a it_o move_v and_o stir_v and_o strive_v and_o disquiet_v it_o when_o loss_n and_o cross_n come_v they_o break_v the_o frame_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v like_o the_o firm_a ground_n let_v the_o wind_n blow_v never_o so_o violent_a yet_o it_o move_v not_o it_o stand_v fast_o again_o in_o the_o abundance_n of_o outward_a thing_n there_o be_v no_o true_a contentment_n neither_o in_o the_o want_n of_o they_o but_o where_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v there_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o dejectedness_n this_o difference_n we_o shall_v see_v in_o adam_n and_o paul_n adam_n though_o he_o be_v lord_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o have_v the_o rule_n of_o all_o the_o creature_n yet_o when_o he_o be_v weak_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n what_o joy_n have_v he_o nay_o what_o fear_n have_v he_o when_o he_o hide_v himself_o in_o the_o garden_n again_o look_v upon_o paul_n who_o in_o the_o want_n of_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v not_o deject_v at_o all_o as_o in_o act_n 16._o it_o be_v say_v that_o when_o paul_n and_o 16._o silas_n be_v in_o prison_n in_o the_o stock_n the_o prisoner_n sing_v for_o joy_n now_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o but_o this_o because_o they_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o man_n that_o at_o such_o a_o time_n will_v have_v be_v hot_a and_o zealous_a where_o be_v the_o generation_n of_o these_o man_n sure_o they_o be_v all_o go_v for_o there_o be_v no_o heat_n nor_o zeal_n leave_v it_o be_v true_a we_o abound_v in_o knowledge_n that_o be_v we_o have_v the_o same_o knowledge_n that_o they_o have_v but_o we_o want_v their_o zeal_n and_o spirit_n and_o we_o have_v the_o same_o gift_n but_o we_o want_v their_o spirit_n therefore_o let_v we_o now_o show_v ourselves_o to_o be_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o be_v to_o have_v the_o spirit_n in_o we_o by_o our_o zeal_n against_o evil_n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o many_o holy_a man_n that_o have_v the_o object_n spirit_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o so_o hot_a and_o zealous_a against_o evil_n but_o be_v marvellous_a mild_a and_o patient_a first_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o holy_a man_n may_v have_v pit_n answ._n wherein_o they_o may_v be_v fall_v i_o say_v they_o may_v have_v dross_n as_o well_o as_o gold_n that_o he_o be_v dead_a so_o if_o the_o word_n will_v not_o work_v in_o you_o but_o you_o remain_v senseless_a and_o dead_a without_o spiritual_a heat_n in_o you_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v more_o than_o in_o a_o swoon_n that_o be_v you_o be_v already_o dead_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o adamant_n that_o it_o will_v not_o be_v heat_v with_o fire_n so_o i_o say_v of_o you_o if_o the_o word_n will_v not_o heat_v you_o when_o you_o be_v rub_v with_o it_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o you_o be_v like_o the_o adamant_n dead_a unto_o grace_n second_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o howsoever_o some_o man_n answ._n that_o be_v faithful_a be_v not_o so_o zealous_a it_o be_v true_a yet_o i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o good_a argument_n to_o say_v that_o because_o counterfeit_v drug_n and_o ware_n have_v the_o same_o send_v and_o smell_v that_o good_a ware_n have_v therefore_o they_o be_v as_o good_a or_o that_o the_o good_a ware_n have_v not_o the_o they_o do_v not_o so_o burn_v in_o the_o spirit_n as_o other_o do_v it_o be_v not_o therefore_o good_a to_o conclude_v that_o it_o matter_n not_o whether_o you_o be_v zealous_a or_o no_o for_o howsoever_o it_o be_v true_a in_o he_o it_o may_v be_v false_a in_o thou_o and_o know_v also_o that_o this_o weakness_n be_v join_v with_o much_o holy_a zeal_n though_o it_o be_v not_o outward_o express_v for_o certain_o as_o where_o true_a fire_n be_v there_o be_v heat_n so_o where_o there_o be_v the_o spirit_n there_o be_v zeal_n therefore_o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v heat_n in_o you_o if_o you_o have_v not_o you_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n the_o second_o sign_n whereby_o you_o shall_v know_v whether_o you_o sign_n have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n or_o no_o be_v this_o if_o you_o find_v that_o you_o be_v not_o only_o able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o you_o will_v natural_o do_v but_o you_o have_v also_o holiness_n join_v with_o it_o this_o sign_n i_o make_v of_o two_o lamb_n that_o be_v he_o have_v more_o than_o natural_a patience_n also_o this_o be_v true_a in_o paul_n peter_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o saint_n also_o it_o work_v in_o we_o love_v above_o a_o natural_a love_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o christ_n be_v full_a of_o love_n and_o have_v compassion_n on_o the_o multitude_n again_o it_o work_v joy_n in_o a_o man_n beyond_o natural_a joy_n this_o we_o see_v in_o paul_n and_o silas_n when_o they_o be_v in_o prison_n they_o sing_v for_o joy_n and_o the_o disciple_n in_o act_n 4._o rejoice_v that_o 4._o they_o be_v think_v worthy_a to_o because_o it_o cross_v his_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o some_o such_o thing_n again_o he_o may_v have_v some_o taste_n or_o relish_n o_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o he_o be_v not_o cleanse_v or_o purge_v by_o they_o again_o they_o may_v walk_v as_o a_o live_a man_n walk_v that_o be_v perform_v holy_a duty_n but_o they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o holy_a duty_n neither_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o in_o obedience_n but_o out_o of_o self_n love_n that_o be_v they_o be_v still_o ebb_v and_o seldom_o flow_v they_o omit_v ostner_o than_o they_o perform_v therefore_o let_v i_o exhort_v you_o say_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o good_a meaning_n deal_v righteous_o and_o serve_v god_n he_o shall_v be_v accept_v all_o which_o be_v nothing_o without_o christ_n for_o the_o more_o a_o man_n go_v on_o in_o good_a intention_n before_o he_o be_v in_o christ_n by_o faith_n all_o his_o performance_n be_v but_o curse_a abomination_n and_o so_o further_o off_o from_o faith_n and_o that_o which_o god_n have_v most_o severe_o punish_v as_o he_o do_v saul_n his_o good_a intention_n without_o obedience_n unto_o he_o but_o may_v some_o say_v if_o it_o be_v so_o than_o it_o be_v better_a
