law_n be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o burden_n certain_o in_o those_o respect_v christ_n can_v be_v say_v to_o give_v we_o rest_n in_o what_o respect_n the_o law_n be_v good_a and_o not_o burdensome_a to_o the_o saint_n the_o law_n certain_o be_v good_a as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o rom._n 7._o even_o at_o that_o time_n when_o his_o soul_n be_v mighty_o trouble_v with_o his_o corruption_n and_o he_o even_o cry_v out_o oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o chapter_n but_o yet_o in_o the_o 12._o verse_n he_o profess_v that_o the_o law_n be_v holy_a and_o the_o commandment_n holy_a and_o just_o and_o good_a now_o than_o that_o that_o be_v holy_a and_o just_o and_o good_a certain_o christ_n do_v never_o come_v to_o deliver_v we_o from_o that_o to_o redeem_v we_o from_o that_o it_o can_v never_o be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o those_o that_o be_v holy_a that_o that_o be_v law_n it_o be_v indeed_o the_o very_a glass_n of_o god_n holiness_n i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o glass_n of_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n in_o the_o moral_a law_n we_o may_v see_v the_o lustre_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o holiness_n of_o god_n himself_o and_o therefore_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o as_o it_o be_v the_o glass_n of_o god_n holiness_n wherein_o we_o may_v see_v the_o purity_n of_o god_n nature_n the_o law_n of_o god_n show_v god_n to_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n different_a from_o all_o the_o heathen_n who_o have_v not_o a_o holy_a and_o righteous_a law_n as_o our_o god_n have_v second_o the_o law_n it_o be_v a_o extract_n of_o the_o very_a image_n that_o god_n make_v man_n in_o at_o the_o first_o a_o extract_n of_o god_n image_n as_o it_o be_v a_o copy_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n what_o be_v the_o image_n that_o god_n make_v man_n in_o at_o the_o first_o but_o in_o the_o imperssion_n of_o his_o law_n in_o their_o heart_n the_o very_a writing_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o be_v that_o we_o call_v the_o moral_a law_n in_o that_o consist_v the_o very_a image_n of_o god_n in_o man_n soul_n at_o his_o first_o creation_n when_o he_o be_v in_o his_o innocency_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o as_o it_o be_v a_o copy_n and_o extract_v of_o god_n image_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n it_o be_v rather_o renew_v by_o christ_n than_o abolish_v by_o christ_n three_o the_o law_n it_o be_v a_o glass_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o see_v our_o own_o face_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o see_v how_o far_o we_o be_v decline_v from_o the_o image_n in_o which_o we_o first_o be_v make_v and_o so_o far_o christ_n have_v not_o deliver_v we_o from_o it_o neither_o for_o he_o will_v have_v we_o still_o to_o look_v into_o the_o law_n as_o into_o a_o glass_n to_o see_v how_o far_o we_o be_v come_v short_a of_o that_o that_o god_n do_v require_v of_o we_o and_o that_o god_n do_v enable_v we_o to_o do_v that_o be_v a_o three_o consideration_n of_o the_o law_n four_o the_o law_n be_v a_o revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n it_o reveal_v what_o be_v the_o holy_a and_o righteous_a will_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o creature_n and_o in_o that_o consideration_n we_o be_v not_o deliver_v from_o it_o neither_o we_o be_v to_o look_v into_o that_o to_o see_v what_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v concern_v we_o last_o which_o follow_v from_o thence_o the_o law_n be_v still_o a_o authoritative_a rule_n for_o our_o conversation_n to_o order_v our_o conversation_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v as_o clear_v in_o as_o in_o any_o one_o truth_n that_o be_v in_o the_o book_n of_o god_n it_o be_v indeed_o a_o point_n that_o be_v it_o not_o for_o a_o strange_a kind_n of_o wantonness_n that_o have_v possess_v the_o spirit_n of_o some_o it_o be_v never_o needful_a to_o spend_v one_o quarter_n or_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n upon_o it_o that_o place_n in_o james_n 2.8_o and_o so_o on_o if_o you_o fulfil_v the_o royal_a law_n according_a to_o the_o scripture_n thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o you_o do_v well_o you_o do_v well_o in_o that_o now_o that_o thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o second_o table_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n and_o it_o be_v call_v the_o royal_a law_n the_o law_n of_o the_o great_a king_n but_o if_o you_o have_v respect_n to_o person_n you_o commit_v sin_n that_o be_v you_o offend_v against_o this_o law_n and_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o law_n as_o transgressor_n the_o law_n convince_v you_o as_o transgressor_n for_o whosoever_o shall_v keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o yet_o offend_v in_o one_o point_n be_v guilty_a of_o al._n for_o he_o that_o say_v thou_o shall_v not_o commit_v adultery_n say_v also_o thou_o shall_v not_o kill_v now_o where_o be_v these_o comandement_n but_o in_o the_o ten_o commandment_n do_v not_o commit_v adultery_n do_v not_o kill_v now_o if_o thou_o commit_v no_o adultery_n yet_o if_o thou_o kill_v thou_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n of_o those_o ten_o commandment_n it_o be_v true_a as_o we_o shall_v hear_v afterward_o they_o come_v to_o we_o in_o another_o way_n than_o former_o they_o come_v to_o the_o jew_n but_o still_o it_o be_v apparent_a notwithstanding_o any_o thing_n reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n though_o there_o may_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o grace_n now_o mix_v with_o every_o commandment_n that_o come_v to_o we_o and_o so_o the_o manner_n of_o bring_v it_o to_o we_o may_v be_v a_o by_o st._n john_n but_o this_o sin_n be_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n so_o that_o in_o these_o five_o respect_n as_o the_o law_n be_v the_o glass_n of_o god_n holiness_n as_o it_o be_v the_o very_a copy_n and_o extract_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o which_o god_n make_v man_n at_o the_o first_o as_o it_o be_v the_o glass_n in_o which_o we_o be_v to_o look_v to_o see_v our_o deformity_n as_o it_o be_v the_o revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o authoritative_a rule_n for_o our_o conversation_n so_o christ_n do_v not_o deliver_v we_o from_o it_o but_o it_o stand_v in_o force_n in_o all_o these_o five_o respect_n and_o there_o be_v no_o believer_n no_o gracious_a godly_a soul_n that_o do_v account_v the_o law_n a_o burden_n in_o these_o respect_n but_o bless_v god_n for_o the_o law_n and_o they_o account_v it_o their_o inheritance_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o their_o soul_n they_o bless_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o know_v it_o and_o their_o heart_n lie_v under_o the_o power_n of_o it_o and_o they_o be_v willing_a to_o order_v their_o life_n by_o it_o quest_n but_o then_o what_o be_v we_o deliver_v from_o in_o the_o law_n by_o christ_n first_o from_o the_o rigour_n of_o it_o christ_n deliver_v we_o from_o the_o load_n of_o the_o rigour_n of_o it_o from_o this_o rigour_n that_o it_o require_v perfect_a obedience_n so_o far_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n and_o yet_o this_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v rigorous_a in_o regard_n of_o our_o weakness_n for_o we_o have_v once_o power_n but_o now_o the_o lord_n do_v take_v off_o the_o rigour_n in_o regard_n of_o our_o weakness_n and_o so_o rigorous_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o violent_a and_o rigorous_a way_n that_o it_o do_v take_v to_o force_v on_o man_n unto_o obedience_n we_o shall_v hear_v how_o we_o be_v deliver_v from_o that_o second_o believer_n be_v deliver_v from_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o law_n quest_n you_o will_v say_v how_o be_v the_o
soul_n come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o it_o hear_v the_o voice_n behind_o he_o as_o it_o be_v say_v come_v to_o i_o and_o the_o soul_n be_v enable_v to_o answer_v to_o the_o call_v and_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n it_o do_v now_o perform_v duty_n as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o and_o make_v conscience_n of_o they_o as_o much_o as_o it_o do_v before_o but_o now_o they_o come_v to_o do_v they_o in_o another_o manner_n than_o they_o do_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o be_v easy_a to_o they_o over_o that_o they_o be_v before_o and_o they_o come_v to_o have_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n notwithstanding_o their_o imperfection_n in_o duty_n when_o you_o go_v to_o prayer_n indeed_o sometime_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v much_o enlarge_v in_o prayer_n and_o your_o thought_n be_v take_v up_o whole_o with_o the_o duty_n that_o you_o be_v perform_v than_o you_o think_v you_o have_v some_o comfort_n but_o when_o you_o have_v any_o wander_a thought_n and_o distraction_n in_o prayer_n than_o you_o rise_v up_o with_o a_o mighty_a trouble_a spirit_n and_o can_v have_v no_o rest_n all_o the_o day_n long_o now_o when_o you_o come_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o mystery_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n though_o there_o be_v many_o imperfection_n in_o your_o duty_n yet_o than_o you_o shall_v find_v rest_n unto_o your_o soul_n notwithstanding_o all_o your_o imperfection_n but_o that_o will_v come_v to_o be_v more_o clear_o open_v when_o we_o come_v to_o that_o an_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v those_o that_o have_v labour_v under_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o find_v it_o toilsome_a and_o exceed_o burdensome_a to_o they_o christ_n call_v they_o to_o come_v to_o he_o that_o they_o may_v have_v rest_n the_o burden_n under_o sin_n second_o those_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v under_o the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n the_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n that_o be_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o sin_n this_o be_v another_o thing_n beside_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o other_o labour_n be_v from_o under_o duty_n but_o this_o labour_n be_v from_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o this_o be_v a_o great_a labour_n and_o burden_n oh_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n it_o work_v to_o purpose_n it_o labour_v then_o indeed_o the_o thought_n they_o gather_v together_o and_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v make_v a_o great_a disturbance_n and_o cause_v fear_n and_o tremble_n in_o the_o soul_n the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o be_v before_o slugish_a dull_a heavy_a and_o dead_a when_o god_n come_v to_o make_v it_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n than_o it_o be_v quicken_v enliven_v and_o work_v you_o that_o labour_n and_o be_v heavy_a lade_v you_o that_o feel_v the_o weight_n of_o sin_n upon_o your_o soul_n and_o know_v not_o what_o in_o the_o world_n to_o do_v come_v you_o to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v the_o burden_n of_o corruption_n three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n not_o only_o under_o the_o gild_n of_o your_o sin_n but_o under_o the_o power_n of_o corruption_n that_o feel_v your_o sin_n strong_a in_o you_o and_o you_o will_v fain_o get_v the_o mastery_n of_o they_o you_o that_o carry_v about_o with_o you_o such_o a_o weight_n as_o make_v you_o to_o cry_v out_o with_o st._n paul_n oh_o wretched_a man_n or_o woman_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v deliver_v i_o from_o this_o body_n of_o death_n you_o that_o will_v fain_o overcome_v those_o strong_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o you_o and_o it_o be_v the_o great_a burden_n of_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o can_v overcome_v they_o come_v to_o i_o say_v christ_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n from_o they_o also_o first_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o duty_n and_o find_v they_o toilsome_a second_o you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o find_v your_o soul_n perplex_v by_o it_o three_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o the_o power_n of_o any_o corruption_n and_o can_v overcome_v it_o come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v and_o then_o the_o burden_n of_o affliction_n four_o you_o that_o labour_v under_o any_o outward_a trouble_n or_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n all_o you_o that_o be_v in_o any_o sad_a condition_n that_o have_v any_o burden_n upon_o you_o outward_o if_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n he_o will_v ease_v you_o of_o they_o though_o perhaps_o he_o will_v not_o take_v they_o from_o you_o though_o you_o may_v be_v under_o the_o affliction_n as_o before_o yet_o you_o shall_v have_v rest_n and_o ease_v in_o they_o have_v you_o any_o burden_n of_o poverty_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o child_n have_v you_o any_o burden_n in_o your_o yoke_n fellow_n or_o burden_n by_o reason_n of_o weakness_n in_o body_n if_o you_o will_v have_v rest_n you_o must_v go_v for_o it_o to_o chirst_n many_o when_o they_o be_v under_o any_o outward_a affliction_n they_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o creature_n for_o rest_n oh_o if_o i_o have_v but_o good_a friend_n i_o shall_v be_v happy_a or_o if_o i_o have_v but_o a_o estate_n i_o shall_v be_v well_o but_o if_o thy_o poverty_n do_v work_v upon_o thy_o heart_n kind_o it_o will_v drive_v thou_o to_o chest_n and_o make_v thou_o to_o say_v true_a i_o be_o poor_a in_o this_o world_n but_o there_o be_v enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v i_o rich_a there_o be_v mercy_n enough_o in_o christ_n to_o make_v my_o life_n comfortable_a to_o make_v i_o who_o be_o for_o the_o present_a in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n happy_a for_o ever_o those_o that_o be_v poor_a outward_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o christ_n if_o their_o poverty_n do_v drive_v they_o to_o christ_n it_o be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o the_o lord_n do_v sanctify_v their_o poverty_n unto_o they_o now_o because_o all_o these_o burden_n if_o they_o be_v handle_v distinct_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n the_o burden_n of_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o burden_n of_o outward_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n to_o open_v these_o full_o and_o to_o show_v how_o christ_n call_v those_o that_o be_v under_o these_o to_o himself_o will_v take_v up_o much_o time_n therefore_o i_o will_v pitch_v upon_o the_o second_o at_o present_a and_o handle_v that_o more_o thorough_o and_o that_o be_v the_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n you_o that_o labour_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n come_v to_o i_o and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_v i_o will_v not_o here_o stand_v to_o open_v unto_o you_o what_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n be_v then_o i_o shall_v soon_o slip_v into_o a_o argument_n that_o i_o have_v at_o large_a heretofore_o open_v to_o you_o sin_n out_o of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n only_o thus_o much_o let_v we_o know_v that_o of_o all_o burden_n in_o the_o world_n the_o burden_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v the_o great_a it_o be_v that_o that_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o the_o very_a spirit_n of_o god_n god_n complain_v that_o he_o be_v press_v under_o it_o as_o a_o cart_n be_v press_v that_o be_v full_a of_o sheaf_n it_o be_v that_o which_o press_v down_o the_o angel_n to_o hell_n to_o be_v reserve_v in_o chain_n of_o darkness_n it_o be_v that_o which_o press_v down_o christ_n and_o make_v he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n and_o it_o be_v that_o that_o have_v be_v a_o great_a weight_n and_o burden_n upon_o many_o thousand_o of_o god_n saint_n it_o be_v that_o that_o the_o damn_a in_o hell_n lie_v under_o now_o and_o must_v do_v so_o eternal_o curse_v blaspheme_v of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o that_o make_v the_o whole_a creation_n to_o groan_v and_o travel_v in_o pain_n however_o many_o people_n think_v slight_o and_o mean_o of_o it_o yet_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v lay_v it_o upon_o any_o soul_n such_o a_o soul_n do_v find_v it_o to_o be_v a_o burden_n indeed_o chap._n iii_o the_o burden_n under_o sin_n lay_v open_a in_o nine_o particular_n 1._o when_o the_o soul_n not_o only_o apprehend_v but_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n in_o the_o reality_n of_o it_o 2._o find_v all_o the_o comfort_n that_o do_v attend_v sin_n before_o to_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o 3._o look_v upon_o itself_o as_o loathsome_a and_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n bow_v to_o god_n 4._o tremble_v at_o the_o least_o thought_n and_o temptation_n to_o sin_n 5._o feel_v sin_n heavy_a
christ_n for_o ease_n and_o rest_n four_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o law_n be_v exceed_o great_a in_o this_o respect_n that_o upon_o any_o one_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n the_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v break_v so_o as_o to_o lose_v ability_n to_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v any_o part_n of_o the_o law_n for_o ever_o i_o say_v there_o be_v this_o in_o the_o law_n more_o than_o in_o the_o gospel_n that_o upon_o any_o one_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v so_o break_v as_o to_o loose_v all_o the_o ability_n of_o ever_o keep_v any_o part_n of_o the_o law_n again_o as_o thus_o i_o show_v you_o in_o adam_n adam_n be_v the_o head_n of_o the_o first_o covenant_n of_o work_n of_o the_o law_n now_o adam_n he_o break_v it_o in_o one_o particular_a fail_v in_o one_o particular_a of_o what_o god_n require_v of_o he_o and_o in_o break_v of_o it_o in_o that_o one_o thing_n he_o and_o all_o his_o posterity_n be_v so_o break_v that_o they_o lose_v all_o their_o ability_n of_o keep_v of_o the_o law_n for_o ever_o except_o god_n come_v and_o create_v any_o ability_n they_o have_v lose_v what_o ability_n be_v give_v at_o first_o in_o their_o creation_n so_o than_o this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a mystery_n that_o one_o by_o do_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_n shall_v weaken_v the_o contrary_a habit_n that_o by_o do_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a we_o shall_v quite_o loose_v the_o habit_n that_o be_v quite_o loose_a the_o habit_n by_o one_o act_n and_o not_o only_o loose_v the_o habit_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o particular_a evil_n that_o we_o do_v but_o lose_v all_o habit_n of_o all_o good_a whatsoever_o and_o that_o by_o one_o act_n now_o this_o be_v a_o thing_n above_o nature_n this_o be_v only_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n god_n make_v such_o a_o covenant_n it_o run_v upon_o such_o term_n as_o if_o adam_n do_v but_o sin_n in_o one_o thing_n he_o must_v die_v that_o be_v his_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o his_o body_n must_v die_v a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o so_o loose_a all_o habit_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n dead_a in_o sin_n further_o such_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n that_o suppose_v god_n shall_v restore_v we_o all_o to_o be_v as_o perfect_a as_o ever_o adam_n be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o innocency_n void_a of_o all_o sin_n and_o have_v the_o image_n of_o god_n perfect_a and_o then_o god_n shall_v come_v and_o put_v we_o upon_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n again_o i_o say_v if_o we_o than_o shall_v but_o fail_v in_o any_o one_o thing_n it_o will_v break_v we_o so_o as_o we_o shall_v loose_v all_o our_o ability_n to_o perform_v any_o duty_n ever_o after_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o law_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o the_o gospel_n though_o we_o sin_n against_o the_o gospel_n we_o do_v not_o present_o loose_v all_o our_o habit_n of_o grace_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o difference_n that_o though_o adam_n when_o he_o sin_v against_o the_o law_n he_o lose_v all_o his_o habit_n to_o do_v any_o good_a after_o and_o that_o though_o we_o sin_n against_o the_o gospel_n yet_o we_o do_v not_o loose_v those_o habit_n that_o i_o shall_v show_v afterward_o when_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o show_v that_o the_o yoke_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v easy_a than_o that_o of_o the_o weight_n as_o it_o clear_o apprehend_v that_o no_o creature_n in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n be_v able_a to_o remove_v and_o take_v it_o away_o it_o be_v make_v so_o sensible_a of_o the_o weight_n of_o sin_n that_o it_o feel_v &_o apprehend_v itself_o to_o lie_v under_o such_o a_o weight_n as_o no_o creature_n in_o heaven_n or_o earth_n be_v able_a to_o take_v away_o &_o if_o there_o come_v not_o some_o power_n beyond_o the_o power_n of_o any_o creature_n here_o must_v i_o lie_v down_o and_o be_v press_v eternal_o under_o this_o weight_n as_o suppose_v a_o poor_a man_n shall_v lie_v under_o a_o grievous_a burden_n in_o some_o ditch_n or_o the_o like_a and_o there_o come_v it_o may_v be_v a_o child_n to_o he_o or_o there_o fly_v a_o bird_n over_o he_o or_o there_o run_v a_o dog_n by_o he_o but_o alas_o he_o think_v with_o himself_o i_o may_v lie_v long_o enough_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o there_o must_v come_v some_o other_o strength_n to_o help_v i_o or_o else_o i_o must_v sure_o perish_v so_o the_o soul_n lie_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n and_o think_v lord_n what_o a_o burden_n have_v i_o bring_v myself_o under_o so_o great_a that_o if_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n or_o all_o the_o angel_n in_o heaven_n shall_v come_v to_o i_o they_o can_v help_v i_o they_o may_v speak_v good_a word_n to_o i_o but_o they_o can_v help_v i_o it_o be_v only_o the_o almighty_a power_n of_o god_n that_o be_v able_a to_o help_v i_o now_o the_o soul_n feel_v sin_n to_o some_o purpose_n when_o once_o it_o feel_v that_o there_o be_v no_o create_a power_n no_o finite_a power_n but_o
only_o the_o infinite_a power_n of_o the_o great_a god_n that_o can_v help_v it_o and_o give_v it_o ease_v the_o seven_o burden_n of_o sin_n seven_o and_o then_o in_o the_o next_o place_n the_o soul_n that_o be_v true_o burden_v with_o sin_n have_v rather_o ten_o thousand_o time_n have_v any_o burden_n upon_o it_o than_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o sin_n be_v delightful_a to_o i_o but_o now_o i_o will_v rather_o have_v any_o burden_n upon_o i_o then_o this_o i_o do_v before_o think_v that_o those_o that_o want_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o be_v outward_o poor_a and_o mean_v be_v miserable_a but_o now_o have_v i_o all_o the_o outward_a misery_n in_o the_o world_n upon_o my_o back_n i_o have_v rather_o bear_v they_o all_o then_o this_o burden_n i_o have_v feel_v much_o affliction_n in_o my_o day_n but_o this_o burden_n and_o this_o weight_n be_v most_o grievous_a and_o heavy_a of_o all_o oh_o if_o the_o lord_n will_v but_o take_v off_o this_o weight_n and_o this_o burden_n from_o i_o let_v he_o lay_v what_o weight_n and_o burden_n upon_o i_o he_o wil._n thus_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v right_o burden_v with_o sin_n be_v affect_v the_o eight_o burden_n of_o sin_n eight_o again_o though_o it_o feel_v much_o weight_n of_o sin_n upon_o it_o yet_o in_o all_o this_o it_o justify_v god_n and_o do_v not_o think_v hard_a thought_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o the_o heavy_a hand_n of_o god_n be_v upon_o he_o it_o be_v true_a i_o feel_v god_n heavy_a hand_n be_v upon_o i_o and_o press_v i_o sore_o but_o yet_o god_n hand_n be_v just_a he_o be_v righteous_a in_o all_o this_o let_v he_o have_v glory_n whatsoever_o become_v of_o i_o for_o the_o truth_n be_v i_o have_v bring_v this_o burden_n upon_o myself_o there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o i_o heap_v up_o one_o sin_n after_o another_o as_o if_o i_o can_v never_o have_v have_v weight_n enough_o upon_o i_o but_o now_o i_o find_v it_o heavy_a oh_o the_o sin_n of_o my_o youth_n they_o lie_v heavy_a now_o upon_o my_o soul_n my_o lie_a and_o swear_v and_o the_o loss_n of_o my_o time_n and_o my_o saboth-breaking_a oh_o the_o lord_n be_v righteous_a in_o all_o his_o way_n and_o in_o this_o manner_n do_v the_o heart_n work_n that_o be_v burden_v in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o the_o lord_n do_v intend_v good_a unto_o the_o nine_o burden_n of_o sin_n nine_o and_o last_o though_o it_o be_v under_o such_o a_o burden_n as_o be_v almost_o intolerable_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o sink_v down_o in_o despare_n under_o its_o burden_n as_o a_o beast_n while_o it_o be_v under_o a_o burden_n for_o a_o little_a while_n it_o will_v struggle_v and_o strive_v under_o it_o but_o afterward_o it_o will_v lie_v down_o and_o be_v sullen_a and_o die_v under_o it_o but_o now_o those_o that_o be_v burden_v with_o sin_n in_o such_o a_o manner_n as_o the_o lord_n do_v use_v to_o prepare_v the_o heart_n for_o his_o sonn_n by_o they_o feel_v the_o weight_n indeed_o of_o it_o but_o so_o feel_v the_o weight_n as_o they_o labour_v that_o be_v their_o heart_n be_v yet_o active_a and_o stir_a and_o work_v attend_v still_o upon_o any_o direction_n that_o god_n have_v to_o give_v they_o out_o of_o his_o word_n their_o heart_n do_v keep_v active_a and_o cry_v to_o god_n and_o weight_a to_o know_v what_o the_o mind_n of_o god_n be_v towards_o they_o and_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o god_n shall_v require_v of_o they_o they_o do_v not_o lie_v sullen_a and_o dead_a as_o it_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o soul_n in_o this_o condition_n express_v in_o the_o nine_o particular_n before_o mention_v if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o as_o these_o know_v that_o these_o be_v they_o that_o christ_n do_v in_o a_o more_o especial_a manner_n call_v unto_o and_o say_v come_v to_o i_o you_o that_o be_v thus_o weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o rest_n chap._n iu._n two_o caution_n touch_v the_o burden_n of_o sin_n 1._o that_o it_o be_v no_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n 2_o that_o it_o do_v not_o interest_n the_o soul_n in_o christ_n nor_o give_v it_o rest_n in_o he_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n require_v answ_n to_o that_o i_o answer_v that_o all_o this_o burden_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o sin_n be_v not_o any_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n that_o must_v be_v grant_v there_o be_v no_o other_o condition_n but_o believe_v in_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o look_v upon_o as_o a_o condition_n in_o the_o second_o place_n you_o must_v know_v that_o all_o this_o burden_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o sin_n it_o do_v not_o interest_n the_o soul_n in_o christ_n nor_o give_v it_o rest_n in_o christ_n i_o may_v be_v thus_o burden_v for_o sin_n yet_o except_o i_o do_v believe_v indeed_o that_o there_o be_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n beyond_o this_o i_o shall_v not_o obtain_v rest_n then_o hence_o we_o must_v not_o ground_v our_o faith_n upon_o be_v burden_v for_o sin_n to_o think_v because_o we_o be_v burden_v therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v pardon_v and_o save_v we_o must_v not_o lay_v the_o stress_n and_o weight_n of_o our_o faith_n upon_o the_o feel_n the_o weight_n of_o our_o sin_n that_o which_o we_o must_v pitch_v our_o faith_n upon_o be_v not_o our_o trouble_n the_o trouble_n of_o our_o soul_n for_o our_o sin_n but_o those_o trouble_n that_o the_o soul_n of_o jesus_n christ_n suffer_v for_o sin_n it_o be_v a_o note_n of_o great_a use_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v it_o you_o must_v know_v this_o that_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v trouble_v for_o sin_n you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n nor_o you_o must_v not_o make_v this_o the_o object_n of_o your_o faith_n as_o to_o think_v thus_o because_o i_o be_o thus_o trouble_v therefore_o i_o may_v believe_v that_o my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v no_o i_o must_v not_o pitch_v my_o faith_n upon_o my_o own_o trouble_n but_o upon_o the_o trouble_n of_o jesus_n christ_n those_o trouble_n that_o the_o soul_n of_o jesus_n christ_n do_v endure_v by_o way_n of_o satisfaction_n first_o then_o hence_o will_v follow_v that_o it_o be_v not_o any_o degree_n of_o trouble_n for_o sin_n how_o much_o soever_o one_o have_v be_v trouble_v for_o sin_n or_o how_o little_a soever_o that_o give_v they_o interest_n or_o not_o interest_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v it_o be_v not_o the_o measure_n of_o it_o for_o certain_o if_o we_o can_v come_v to_o christ_n without_o any_o burden_n or_o sense_n of_o our_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o we_o can_v come_v to_o christ_n i_o say_v without_o any_o such_o be_v burden_v for_o sin_n we_o may_v but_o because_o that_o jesus_n christ_n do_v work_v upon_o the_o heart_n in_o a_o rational_a way_n as_o a_o rational_a creature_n although_o he_o do_v work_n above_o reason_n and_o convey_v supernatural_a grace_n that_o be_v beyond_o reason_n yet_o still_o he_o do_v work_n upon_o the_o heart_n as_o a_o rational_a creature_n now_o therefore_o the_o work_n of_o reason_n must_v be_v make_v subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n usual_o when_o the_o lord_n work_v upon_o a_o soul_n he_o make_v use_v of_o the_o work_n of_o reason_n to_o make_v that_o subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o work_n of_o his_o grace_n now_o because_o no_o man_n can_v come_v to_o a_o saviour_n but_o he_o must_v know_v what_o need_n he_o have_v of_o a_o saviour_n therefore_o if_o i_o come_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n to_o save_v my_o soul_n from_o sin_n i_o must_v apprehend_v what_o sin_n be_v that_o i_o may_v be_v sensible_a of_o it_o second_o if_o god_n do_v work_v upon_o the_o soul_n as_o a_o rational_a creature_n than_o he_o make_v use_v of_o this_o to_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o stop_v the_o soul_n in_o the_o course_n of_o sin_n for_o before_o the_o sinner_n be_v make_v sensible_a of_o the_o evil_a of_o his_o sin_n he_o go_v on_o in_o a_o full_a carear_n as_o it_o be_v and_o nothing_o will_v stop_v he_o in_o his_o course_n but_o now_o when_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o be_v thus_o burden_v the_o soul_n it_o stop_v and_o do_v not_o run_v in_o that_o full_a stream_n of_o wickedness_n as_o it_o do_v before_o and_o
that_o be_v one_o good_a mean_n to_o help_v the_o soul_n towards_o christ_n the_o very_a stop_n of_o it_o in_o the_o course_n of_o sin_n three_o this_o be_v the_o mean_n in_o a_o rational_a way_n to_o make_v the_o soul_n attend_v to_o any_o call_n of_o christ_n for_o before_o christ_n may_v call_v to_o sinner_n out_o of_o his_o word_n come_v to_o i_o and_o believe_v in_o i_o but_o they_o do_v not_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v not_o come_v if_o a_o man_n be_v under_o a_o heavy_a burden_n in_o a_o dark_a night_n if_o he_o hear_v the_o least_o noise_n of_o the_o foot_n of_o any_o man_n than_o he_o cry_v out_o for_o help_v so_o the_o soul_n under_o the_o heavy_a burden_n of_o sin_n do_v rejoice_v to_o hear_v of_o any_o direction_n out_o of_o the_o word_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n four_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o prize_v mercy_n and_o mercy_n will_v take_v a_o deep_a impression_n upon_o the_o heart_n that_o be_v burden_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v burden_v with_o sin_n oh_o how_o dear_a and_o sweet_a and_o precious_a be_v mercy_n then_o five_o and_o further_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v burden_v with_o sin_n it_o be_v in_o a_o rational_a way_n prepare_v to_o take_v the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n before_o it_o do_v cast_v it_o off_o but_o now_o feel_v sin_n to_o be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n than_o any_o other_o whatsoever_o it_o be_v more_o prepare_v to_o take_v upon_o it_o the_o yoke_n of_o jesus_n christ_n now_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v under_o this_o burden_n than_o christ_n call_v in_o love_n to_o ease_v and_o give_v rest_n to_o infinite_a god_n in_o he_o when_o he_o shall_v see_v a_o immortal_a soul_n under_o such_o a_o burden_n and_o ready_a to_o perish_v and_o it_o cry_v to_o he_o for_o help_n certain_o christ_n will_v corruption_n prevail_v it_o make_v the_o soul_n sick_a and_o every_o thing_n be_v a_o burden_n to_o it_o and_o i_o beseech_v you_o consider_v here_o be_v a_o reason_n why_o you_o be_v so_o weak_a and_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v no_o other_o burden_n if_o any_o body_n across_o you_o when_o you_o come_v home_o wife_n child_n or_o servant_n cross_v you_o you_o can_v bear_v it_o if_o neighbour_n across_o you_o you_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v nothing_o there_o be_v a_o reason_n in_o this_o that_o you_o do_v not_o think_v of_o you_o have_v weaken_v your_o heart_n by_o some_o sin_n or_o other_o and_o break_v your_o peace_n with_o god_n it_o may_v be_v and_o now_o your_o heart_n come_v to_o be_v weak_a you_o be_v like_o a_o sick_a man_n that_o cry_v out_o upon_o any_o thing_n one_o that_o be_v sick_a cry_n out_o upon_o every_o thing_n whereas_o if_o he_o be_v strong_a &_o healthful_a he_o can_v bear_v a_o hundred_o time_n more_o so_o you_o have_v bring_v a_o sickness_n upon_o your_o soul_n there_o be_v some_o sin_n that_o have_v prevail_v with_o the_o you_o prevail_v over_o you_o and_o by_o that_o have_v weaken_v your_o heart_n and_o your_o spirit_n now_o be_v weak_a you_o can_v bear_v nothing_o every_o thing_n be_v a_o grievous_a burden_n to_o you_o so_o that_o the_o prevail_a of_o corruption_n come_v to_o be_v burdensome_a in_o this_o respect_n because_o it_o weaken_v the_o heart_n and_o make_v every_o thing_n burdensome_a to_o they_o two_o second_o the_o saint_n and_o people_n of_o god_n they_o account_v the_o privilege_n of_o corruption_n to_o be_v the_o great_a mean_n of_o grace_n exceed_v unprofitable_a too_o it_o harden_v there_o heart_n and_o they_o come_v to_o prayer_n hear_v the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o find_v little_a good_a many_o of_o you_o complain_v you_o find_v not_o profit_n by_o prayer_n and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n such_o and_o such_o corruption_n have_v prevail_v over_o you_o it_o may_v be_v there_o be_v some_o sin_n that_o you_o live_v in_o that_o have_v prevail_v over_o you_o and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n you_o do_v not_o profit_v as_o you_o desire_v vi_o six_o the_o prevail_a burdensome_a to_o those_o that_o do_v know_v what_o peace_n with_o god_n do_v mean_v vii_o seven_o the_o prevail_a of_o corruption_n be_v a_o grievous_a burden_n because_o it_o be_v that_o many_o time_n that_o shake_v the_o assurance_n of_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a i_o know_v not_o what_o those_o man_n will_v make_v of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n if_o so_o be_v that_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o almighty_a god_n in_o keep_v grace_n alive_a in_o the_o heart_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n so_o that_o in_o this_o god_n have_v glory_n in_o faith_n in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n i_o beseech_v you_o mark_v the_o difference_n between_o presumption_n and_o faith_n in_o christ_n presumption_n will_v trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n notwithstanding_o their_o sin_n but_o that_o do_v indeed_o foment_n their_o sin_n and_o make_v they_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n make_v they_o the_o more_o secure_a in_o their_o sin_n but_o now_o in_o this_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o work_n of_o repentance_n and_o humility_n the_o keep_v the_o soul_n of_o his_o people_n in_o humility_n and_o the_o contrition_n of_o their_o spirit_n that_o be_v exceed_o please_a to_o god_n the_o lord_n be_v near_o to_o a_o break_a contrite_a heart_n a_o melt_a mourn_a spirit_n the_o lord_n do_v delight_n in_o the_o evangelical_a work_n of_o repentance_n this_o please_v the_o lord_n the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n mourning_n and_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n be_v a_o grace_n that_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n god_n shall_v have_v none_o of_o that_o in_o heaven_n and_o he_o have_v it_o therefore_o here_o 5._o god_n hereby_o exercise_v his_o wisdom_n exceed_o in_o bring_v light_n out_o of_o darkeness_n god_n do_v shall_v see_v that_o the_o godly_a that_o have_v the_o most_o grace_n they_o have_v much_o corruption_n in_o they_o still_o they_o rejoice_v perhaps_o in_o it_o and_o they_o little_o think_v that_o god_n aim_v at_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o just_a judgement_n upon_o they_o that_o it_o shall_v harden_v their_o heart_n many_o wicked_a man_n they_o think_v their_o condition_n to_o be_v very_o good_a because_o they_o see_v so_o much_o corruption_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o they_o be_v harden_v thereby_o but_o they_o little_o think_v

its_o come_n to_o he_o 4._o that_o the_o least_o degree_n of_o faith_n will_v give_v the_o soul_n interest_n in_o christ_n 5._o that_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n be_v supernatural_a 6._o that_o faith_n be_v a_o humble_v grace_n 7._o that_o believer_n after_o their_o come_n to_o christ_n shall_v be_v willing_a to_o do_v and_o suffer_v much_o for_o christ_n 8._o that_o they_o who_o be_v once_o in_o christ_n shall_v never_o be_v cast_v off_o 9_o that_o they_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v when_o they_o lose_v their_o interest_n in_o christ_n now_o the_o three_o thing_n be_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o time_n you_o shall_v have_v your_o pardon_n well_o all_o that_o be_v require_v for_o his_o pardon_n be_v but_o come_v to_o that_o place_n how_o if_o this_o man_n be_v at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o that_o place_n and_o many_o difficulty_n that_o hinder_v he_o storm_n tempestuous_a weather_n and_o many_o friend_n to_o hinder_v he_o this_o be_v employ_v that_o he_o must_v have_v because_o there_o be_v a_o great_a distance_n between_o christ_n and_o we_o many_o difficulty_n in_o the_o way_n many_o thing_n that_o will_v keep_v we_o from_o christ_n the_o wickedness_n of_o our_o heart_n this_o temptation_n and_o that_o lust_n now_o it_o can_v possible_o be_v if_o we_o come_v to_o christ_n but_o we_o must_v know_v and_o become_v apprehensive_a of_o the_o worth_n of_o the_o pardon_n which_o may_v raise_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n such_o strong_a resolution_n to_o pass_v through_o all_o difficulty_n whatsoever_o and_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o god_n trouble_v any_o man_n for_o sin_n but_o only_o this_o that_o he_o may_v have_v such_o a_o apprehension_n of_o the_o good_a of_o the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n as_o may_v stir_v in_o he_o strong_a resolution_n to_o get_v to_o christ_n but_o now_o this_o resolution_n be_v not_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n the_o condition_n be_v only_o to_o come_v the_o condition_n be_v not_o because_o we_o be_v afflict_v because_o we_o see_v our_o sin_n but_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n 2._o it_o follow_v likewise_o from_o hence_o that_o no_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o god_n be_v work_v upon_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n need_v trouble_v themselves_o about_o the_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n or_o the_o time_n of_o humiliation_n you_o have_v a_o great_a many_o that_o be_v ready_a to_o take_v advantage_n and_o to_o cry_v out_o against_o man_n that_o they_o preach_v legal_o when_o they_o say_v they_o must_v be_v humble_v and_o the_o like_a i_o know_v no_o man_n live_v that_o ever_o preach_v so_o that_o they_o must_v be_v first_o under_o the_o law_n thus_o long_o under_o the_o law_n before_o they_o come_v to_o christ_n but_o if_o you_o will_v know_v what_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n be_v sufficient_a only_o so_o much_o as_o can_v bring_v you_o to_o christ_n that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o can_v stir_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o resolve_v to_o pass_v through_o all_o difficulty_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n than_o you_o have_v the_o measure_n and_o the_o time_n of_o humiliation_n sufficient_a and_o you_o need_v not_o trouble_v yourselves_o any_o further_a about_o this_o i_o have_v not_o be_v humble_v so_o long_o as_o another_o man_n or_o such_o a_o time_n but_o if_o you_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o if_o i_o come_v to_o christ_n i_o must_v know_v what_o i_o come_v for_o for_o a_o pardon_n a_o pardon_n of_o what_o for_o my_o sin_n my_o sin_n that_o i_o be_o condemn_v for_o there_o must_v be_v a_o sense_n of_o this_o and_o if_o you_o come_v thus_o far_o you_o need_v not_o be_v afflict_v for_o any_o degree_n or_o time_n of_o humiliation_n or_o the_o like_a for_o you_o have_v that_o that_o be_v sufficient_a and_o god_n will_v accept_v of_o your_o come_n if_o once_o you_o be_v come_v to_o he_o god_n will_v not_o say_v oh_o but_o friend_n how_o have_v you_o be_v humble_v in_o your_o come_n god_n know_v you_o have_v pass_v through_o many_o difficulty_n god_n know_v you_o will_v never_o have_v prise_v christ_n except_o you_o have_v know_v what_o the_o worth_n of_o christ_n be_v by_o know_v what_o a_o miserable_a creature_n you_o be_v without_o he_o god_n will_v not_o do_v this_o but_o will_v welcome_v you_o when_o you_o come_v let_v the_o sinner_n be_v what_o he_o will_v christ_n will_v own_v he_o 3._o this_o help_v we_o about_o interest_n in_o come_v to_o christ_n you_o will_v say_v come_v to_o christ_n but_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o i_o have_v any_o right_a to_o come_v to_o christ_n this_o very_a point_n answer_v it_o that_o nothing_o be_v require_v but_o come_v that_o which_o have_v give_v any_o soul_n from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n any_o interest_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n be_v only_o come_v
say_v to_o it_o regard_v not_o the_o stuff_n let_v your_o heart_n be_v whole_o take_v off_o from_o all_o creature_n comfort_n that_o be_v most_o dear_a unto_o you_o it_o be_v all_o but_o stuff_n here_o be_v heaven_n here_o be_v the_o riches_n of_o heaven_n the_o riches_n of_o christ_n be_v you_o and_o then_o do_v the_o soul_n come_v to_o christ_n indeed_o when_o it_o lay_v all_o upon_o christ_n and_o be_v satisfy_v with_o he_o alone_o rule_n iv._o four_o when_o thy_o soul_n be_v make_v towards_o christ_n labour_v to_o keep_v he_o continual_o in_o thy_o eye_n and_o look_v upon_o he_o in_o his_o excellency_n glory_n and_o beauty_n keep_v the_o object_n before_o thou_o all_o the_o while_o thou_o be_v come_v towards_o he_o as_o it_o be_v in_o any_o journey_n if_o i_o be_o go_v to_o in_o his_o lustre_n beauty_n and_o glory_n that_o so_o i_o may_v see_v a_o great_a good_a in_o jesus_n christ_n than_o in_o all_o thing_n else_o that_o the_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o do_v outbid_v all_o good_a whatsoever_o now_o this_o be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o one_o of_o the_o great_a hindrance_n of_o the_o soul_n in_o come_v to_o christ_n be_v this_o that_o it_o lose_v the_o sight_n of_o christ_n in_o come_v and_o the_o devil_n propound_v other_o spectacle_n before_o its_o eye_n in_o come_v and_o so_o it_o look_v into_o the_o deep_a pit_n of_o its_o own_o heart_n and_o see_v no_o other_o matter_n but_o discouragement_n whereas_o it_o shall_v keep_v up_o its_o eye_n upon_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o be_v open_v his_o arm_n ready_a to_o embrace_v it_o and_o there_o be_v a_o secret_a power_n and_o influence_n that_o come_v from_o christ_n unto_o the_o soul_n to_o draw_v the_o soul_n to_o he_o so_o long_o as_o the_o soul_n keep_v christ_n in_o his_o eye_n as_o the_o poor_a woman_n say_v if_o i_o can_v but_o touch_v the_o hem_n of_o his_o garment_n nay_o you_o may_v go_v further_o than_o so_o and_o have_v a_o degree_n of_o faith_n nay_o if_o i_o may_v have_v but_o a_o sight_n of_o christ_n i_o say_v there_o be_v that_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o christ_n that_o will_v draw_v the_o heart_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n as_o they_o say_v of_o some_o kind_n of_o creature_n the_o very_a sight_n of_o they_o will_v kill_v a_o man_n that_o if_o they_o do_v but_o see_v you_o or_o you_o they_o there_o will_v come_v poison_n from_o they_o that_o will_v kill_v you_o say_v the_o naturalist_n but_o i_o be_o sure_a it_o be_v true_a of_o this_o that_o if_o you_o can_v keep_v christ_n in_o your_o eye_n the_o very_a sight_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n will_v be_v of_o excellent_a virtue_n to_o draw_v the_o soul_n to_o christ_n and_o therefore_o you_o that_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n observe_v this_o some_o that_o be_v come_v to_o christ_n it_o fare_v with_o they_o as_o with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n when_o they_o be_v go_v to_o canaan_n they_o have_v go_v a_o pretty_a way_n and_o make_v some_o progress_n but_o then_o they_o fall_v into_o discontent_n when_o they_o find_v a_o little_a discouragement_n and_o upon_o that_o they_o be_v bring_v back_o again_o and_o wander_v forty_o year_n up_o and_o down_o in_o the_o wilderness_n and_o this_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o their_o murmur_a and_o discontent_a so_o it_o be_v with_o many_o that_o be_v go_v out_o of_o their_o natural_a state_n unto_o jesus_n christ_n they_o be_v come_v very_o near_o to_o he_o many_o time_n and_o then_o fall_v into_o fit_n of_o discontent_n pine_a fret_a and_o discouragement_n and_o so_o be_v bring_v back_o again_o and_o make_v to_o wander_v in_o the_o wilderness_n of_o discouragement_n for_o many_o year_n together_o rule_n v._o five_o labour_n thorough_o to_o convince_v thy_o soul_n of_o this_o thing_n that_o whatsoever_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n whatsoever_o humiliation_n whatsoever_o trouble_n of_o spirit_n keep_v thy_o heart_n from_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v not_o of_o god_n but_o rather_o from_o thy_o own_o corruption_n it_o be_v not_o of_o god_n in_o thou_o except_o you_o will_v say_v it_o be_v of_o god_n as_o a_o affliction_n it_o be_v not_o of_o god_n but_o suffer_v the_o devil_n to_o try_v thou_o but_o whatever_o sorrow_n it_o be_v for_o thy_o own_o wretchedness_n or_o unworthiness_n if_o this_o keep_v thou_o off_o from_o christ_n and_o discourage_v thou_o from_o come_v to_o christ_n convince_v thy_o soul_n of_o this_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o gracious_a work_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o but_o the_o trouble_v of_o the_o devil_n in_o thou_o the_o truth_n be_v many_o poor_a sinner_n when_o they_o be_v once_o trouble_v for_o their_o sin_n they_o take_v a_o kind_n of_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o they_o think_v this_o be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o they_o be_v glad_a of_o it_o i_o grant_v you_o trouble_v for_o sin_n be_v a_o good_a thing_n and_o you_o be_v to_o be_v glad_a of_o it_o but_o if_o your_o trouble_n for_o sin_n hinder_v you_o from_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o make_v you_o think_v because_o you_o be_v so_o unworthy_a you_o may_v not_o come_v to_o he_o this_o trouble_n be_v not_o mix_v with_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v convince_v of_o this_o rule_n vi_o six_o take_v heed_n of_o all_o kind_n of_o discouragement_n and_o hindrance_n in_o your_o come_n to_o christ_n but_o then_o take_v heed_n especial_o of_o all_o determination_n take_v heed_n of_o ensnare_a your_o soul_n by_o determine_v against_o yourselves_o as_o say_v sure_o the_o lord_n will_v never_o show_v mercy_n to_o i_o the_o time_n be_v past_a the_o lord_n have_v forsake_v i_o i_o have_v use_v so_o much_o mean_v so_o long_a time_n and_o god_n be_v not_o yet_o come_v to_o i_o no_o the_o lord_n never_o intend_v good_a to_o i_o oh_o take_v heed_n of_o these_o determination_n for_o they_o be_v sinful_a wherever_o they_o be_v there_o can_v be_v no_o just_a cause_n in_o thy_o heart_n be_v it_o as_o vile_a as_o it_o will_v for_o such_o determination_n as_o these_o be_v and_o know_v when_o be_v upon_o it_o to_o that_o end_n that_o thou_o may_v have_v union_n with_o the_o father_n and_o live_v eternal_o with_o he_o to_o the_o praise_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o his_o son_n i_o say_v in_o this_o act_n though_o thou_o be_v not_o able_a explicit_o to_o conceive_v how_o thou_o look_v at_o god_n above_o thyself_o yet_o god_n see_v it_o there_o be_v that_o work_n of_o god_n in_o thy_o they_o need_v not_o trouble_v themselves_o with_o answer_v any_o further_a that_o temptation_n o_o i_o come_v to_o christ_n but_o it_o be_v only_o that_o i_o may_v be_v save_v i_o do_v not_o know_v that_o in_o all_o the_o book_n of_o god_n to_o give_v you_o this_o one_o note_n about_o it_o and_o then_o we_o pass_v from_o this_o point_n that_o we_o find_v this_o as_o a_o note_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n that_o he_o do_v love_v his_o own_o salvation_n too_o much_o we_o never_o find_v it_o as_o a_o note_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n that_o he_o do_v come_v to_o christ_n that_o he_o may_v be_v save_v and_o see_v the_o word_n of_o god_n do_v not_o set_v it_o out_o as_o the_o note_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n let_v not_o we_o nourish_v this_o temptation_n in_o our_o own_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o hinder_v we_o from_o come_v to_o christ_n thy_o heart_n will_v have_v rest_n in_o come_v to_o christ_n therefore_o come_v to_o he_o that_o thou_o may_v have_v rest_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o soul_n but_o through_o a_o mediator_n in_o christ_n the_o soul_n must_v be_v bring_v to_o this_o mercy_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o christ_n the_o mediator_n thou_o must_v first_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o mediator_n before_o thou_o can_v have_v any_o rest_n even_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n itself_o you_o must_v know_v and_o if_o you_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n you_o must_v know_v this_o that_o though_o god_n be_v a_o infinite_a current_n of_o mercy_n yet_o all_o the_o current_n of_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v by_o man_n sin_n so_o as_o it_o can_v their_o family_n and_o in_o their_o closert_n &_o this_o be_v that_o they_o rest_v in_o but_o the_o rest_n of_o a_o immortal_a soul_n must_v have_v a_o better_a foundation_n than_o this_o than_o all_o the_o duty_n than_o all_o the_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n than_o all_o that_o god_n himself_o work_v in_o they_o it_o must_v be_v somewhat_o without_o they_o that_o must_v be_v rest_n to_o their_o soul_n and_o nothing_o wrought_v in_o we_o no_o not_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o we_o can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n it_o must_v be_v the_o perfect_a righteousness_n of_o a_o mediator_n though_o it_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o by_o faith_n can_v be_v rest_n to_o our_o soul_n yet_o nothing_o in_o we_o so_o that_o you_o may_v mistake_v and_o perform_v duty_n in_o a_o formal_a manner_n wo_n to_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n if_o they_o have_v no_o other_o rest_n but_o what_o their_o duty_n bring_v they_o you_o must_v look_v high_a than_o whatever_o you_o be_v or_o can_v be_v enable_v to_o do_v for_o your_o rest_n you_o will_v say_v what_o be_v there_o that_o can_v be_v high_o than_o what_o we_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v by_o god_n there_o be_v a_o righteousness_n in_o jesus_n christ_n by_o which_o you_o must_v come_v there_o be_v a_o insufficiency_n in_o all_o the_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n to_o give_v rest_n and_o yet_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n make_v all_o their_o rest_n in_o these_o thing_n much_o may_v be_v speak_v concern_v the_o danger_n of_o this_o and_o much_o of_o the_o sign_n when_o our_o soul_n have_v true_a rest_n in_o christ_n but_o we_o shall_v meet_v with_o that_o in_o the_o other_o point_n in_o handle_v the_o rest_n that_o we_o have_v in_o christ_n i_o will_v therefore_o pass_v over_o this_o about_o the_o insufficiency_n of_o the_o rest_n in_o all_o other_o thing_n only_o with_o this_o one_o thing_n know_v this_o that_o that_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n as_o the_o iron_n be_v with_o the_o loadstone_n can_v never_o be_v quiet_a either_o in_o creature_n comfort_n or_o in_o hope_n of_o mercy_n or_o in_o any_o duty_n or_o performance_n it_o can_v never_o be_v quiet_a till_o it_o get_v union_n with_o jesus_n christ_n just_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o needle_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o loadstone_n shake_v it_o which_o way_n you_o will_v it_o will_v never_o be_v at_o rest_n till_o it_o come_v to_o the_o north_n and_o when_o it_o get_v north_n than_o it_o stand_v there_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n there_o be_v the_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n and_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v but_o touch_v with_o jesus_n christ_n it_o shake_v be_v full_o of_o fear_n and_o doubt_n and_o offer_v it_o this_o creature_n comfort_n and_o the_o other_o creature_n comfort_n it_o will_v not_o do_v it_o the_o heart_n be_v not_o at_o rest_n but_o now_o when_o there_o be_v the_o manifestation_n of_o christ_n unto_o the_o soul_n let_v they_o come_v to_o a_o sermon_n where_o some_o bless_a promise_n to_o the_o gospel_n be_v open_v to_o they_o and_o jesus_n christ_n the_o shake_n of_o a_o needle_n in_o the_o compass_n and_o other_o man_n they_o be_v trouble_v too_o there_o be_v some_o people_n trouble_v in_o conscience_n for_o their_o sin_n they_o come_v to_o a_o sermon_n and_o hear_v the_o evil_a of_o sin_n open_v and_o god_n meet_v with_o their_o particular_a sin_n some_o secret_a sin_n that_o they_o live_v in_o they_o be_v trouble_v and_o they_o shake_v too_o i_o but_o they_o be_v like_o a_o fall_v needle_n not_o right_o touch_v that_o shake_v as_o the_o other_o do_v but_o it_o will_v stand_v at_o any_o point_n do_v but_o put_v it_o this_o way_n or_o that_o way_n and_o it_o will_v stand_v here_o and_o there_o will_v mariner_n give_v any_o thing_n for_o such_o a_o needle_n that_o will_v stand_v at_o this_o point_n and_o the_o other_o point_n so_o it_o be_v with_o wicked_a man_n when_o they_o be_v trouble_v the_o devil_n the_o world_n and_o their_o corruption_n come_v and_o quiet_a their_o conscience_n out_o of_o christ_n and_o so_o indeed_o this_o hinder_v they_o from_o come_v to_o jesus_n christ_n because_o they_o find_v quiet_a some_o where_o else_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v trouble_v but_o their_o trouble_n and_o shake_n in_o the_o world_n be_v like_o the_o trouble_n of_o a_o ship_n that_o be_v in_o the_o haven_n at_o shore_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n a_o ship_n that_o lie_v at_o anchor_n though_o the_o wave_n toss_v it_o up_o and_o down_o yet_o it_o be_v toss_v up_o and_o down_o at_o anchor_n so_o here_o be_v the_o difference_n for_o all_o the_o world_n between_o all_o the_o trouble_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o trouble_n of_o ungodly_a man_n now_o when_o you_o have_v a_o ship_n at_o sea_n and_o have_v no_o anchor_n and_o the_o storm_n drive_v it_o any_o way_n when_o there_o come_v a_o mighty_a tempest_n and_o hurry_v it_o up_o and_o down_o and_o you_o do_v not_o know_v but_o you_o may_v light_v upon_o a_o rock_n and_o be_v split_v you_o be_v trouble_v but_o the_o saint_n they_o be_v at_o anchor_n and_o you_o count_v yourselves_o at_o rest_n though_o you_o be_v toss_v by_o the_o wave_n when_o you_o be_v at_o anchor_n chap._n xxviii_o of_o the_o rest_n that_o a_o believer_n have_v by_o christ_n from_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n lay_v out_o in_o ten_o particular_n 1._o
keep_v from_o the_o act_n of_o sin_n so_o much_o as_o to_o find_v that_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v apply_v to_o he_o and_o hence_o you_o never_o read_v of_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o mortification_n in_o any_o heathen_a author_n in_o the_o world_n the_o mortification_n of_o corruption_n be_v a_o riddle_n to_o all_o heathen_a writer_n in_o the_o world_n the_o mortify_n of_o corruption_n and_o the_o mortify_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n this_o be_v a_o peculiar_a expression_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v peculiar_a to_o believer_n many_o man_n through_o good_a education_n be_v so_o restrain_v that_o they_o be_v very_o fair_a in_o their_o course_n other_o as_o they_o come_v to_o more_o understanding_n the_o vanity_n of_o their_o youth_n be_v overcome_v there_o be_v not_o that_o profaneness_n commit_v by_o they_o as_o heretofore_o i_o but_o what_o be_v this_o to_o mortification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o death_n that_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n this_o be_v only_o peculiar_a to_o a_o christian_a and_o it_o be_v from_o the_o application_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n the_o application_n of_o a_o christ_n die_v of_o a_o christ_n crucify_a of_o a_o christ_n shed_v his_o blood_n for_o sin_n this_o have_v a_o virtue_n to_o mortify_v sin_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o a_o mortify_a lust_n and_o a_o restrain_a lust_n a_o mortify_a sin_n and_o a_o restrain_a sin_n the_o difference_n lie_v in_o this_o one_o thing_n for_o i_o must_v not_o go_v out_o to_o handle_v the_o point_n but_o only_o this_o one_o thing_n take_v it_o by_o the_o way_n when_o a_o lust_n be_v mortify_v there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o cease_n from_o the_o act_n of_o it_o but_o there_o be_v now_o a_o unsuitableness_n between_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o sin_n whereas_o there_o may_v be_v much_o restraint_n of_o sin_n and_o yet_o still_o there_o may_v remain_v a_o suitableness_n between_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o sin_n only_o they_o dare_v not_o commit_v it_o but_o when_o sin_n be_v mortify_v the_o heart_n be_v so_o change_v that_o there_o be_v a_o unsuitableness_n wrought_v between_o the_o heart_n and_o corruption_n now_o and_o this_o mortification_n of_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n be_v by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n four_o christ_n be_v our_o sanctification_n and_o he_o only_o because_o it_o be_v by_o he_o that_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o every_o man_n heart_n natural_o be_v take_v away_o it_o be_v christ_n only_o that_o do_v deliver_v the_o soul_n from_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o every_o man_n heart_n natural_o you_o know_v this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o man_n by_o nature_n he_o be_v under_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n curse_a be_v the_o man_n that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v it_o but_o now_o we_o apprehend_v ordinary_o this_o curse_n to_o be_v either_o in_o outward_a misery_n or_o else_o in_o hell_n fire_n curse_v eternal_o but_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o one_o branch_n of_o this_o curse_n be_v that_o that_o be_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n here_o there_o be_v a_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n by_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n and_o that_o be_v god_n give_v they_o up_o unto_o themselves_o unto_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n unto_o their_o own_o counsel_n and_o way_n now_o i_o confess_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o curse_n of_o outward_a affliction_n in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v in_o some_o degree_n upon_o some_o and_o in_o a_o further_a degree_n upon_o other_o but_o all_o be_v under_o it_o natural_o so_o this_o spiritual_a death_n be_v execute_v in_o some_o degree_n upon_o some_o and_o in_o more_o degree_n upon_o other_o but_o every_o soul_n be_v in_o some_o measure_n in_o some_o degree_n or_o other_o give_v up_o to_o the_o lust_n of_o its_o own_o heart_n there_o be_v a_o final_a degree_n of_o give_v the_o soul_n up_o to_o the_o lust_n of_o its_o own_o heart_n sometime_o but_o there_o be_v in_o every_o one_o a_o measure_n a_o degree_n of_o this_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o prevail_a of_o the_o corruption_n of_o man_n heart_n may_v appear_v in_o some_o measure_n by_o this_o it_o be_v strange_a to_o see_v that_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n &_o tell_v man_n of_o the_o dangerousness_n of_o their_o way_n that_o it_o will_v never_o be_v peace_n in_o the_o end_n that_o they_o will_v rue_v it_o at_o the_o last_o and_o their_o conscience_n give_v they_o many_o a_o secret_a nip_n yet_o they_o go_v on_o still_o notwithstanding_o the_o terror_n in_o the_o law_n many_o time_n nay_o notwithstanding_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n have_v be_v strong_a upon_o they_o and_o they_o have_v cry_v out_o against_o their_o sin_n and_o promise_v against_o they_o and_o notwithstanding_o that_o they_o find_v that_o their_o sin_n do_v destroy_v the_o very_a health_n of_o their_o body_n waste_v their_o estate_n take_v away_o their_o good_a name_n and_o thereby_o loose_a all_o their_o friend_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o overcome_v it_o as_o the_o scripture_n speak_v of_o some_o that_o have_v eye_n full_a of_o adultery_n they_o can_v cease_v to_o sin_n now_o sometime_o they_o plead_v this_o as_o a_o excuse_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o say_v they_o will_v fain_o leave_v it_o but_o they_o can_v and_o they_o think_v this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a excuse_n for_o their_o sin_n a_o excuse_n no_o this_o their_o can_v may_v be_v from_o the_o spiritual_a curse_n that_o be_v upon_o their_o soul_n because_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n be_v in_o a_o high_a degree_n upon_o their_o heart_n give_v they_o up_o in_o just_a judgement_n unto_o the_o lust_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n and_o this_o i_o take_v in_o some_o part_n to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o place_n in_o 1._o cor._n 15.56_o verse_n the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n be_v heavy_a to_o the_o very_a death_n and_o that_o he_o begin_v to_o be_v amaze_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n now_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o a_o combat_n and_o strife_n in_o thy_o spirit_n with_o temptation_n know_v that_o christ_n be_v in_o such_o a_o combat_n and_o strife_n he_o sweat_v drop_n of_o blood_n it_o may_v be_v the_o soul_n be_v in_o combat_n and_o in_o
