from_o perform_v this_o duty_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n that_o they_o will_v rather_o work_v in_o we_o horror_n and_o tremble_a and_o make_v we_o to_o be_v so_o not_o only_o cast_v down_o but_o dismay_v in_o ourselves_o as_o we_o shall_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o admit_v comfort_n the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o law_n separate_v from_o the_o curse_n and_o threaten_v due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n thereof_o will_v indeed_o set_v before_o we_o god_n absolute_a and_o exact_a righteounesse_fw-fr and_o discover_v unto_o we_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o shall_v do_v to_o he_o and_o to_o our_o neighbour_n but_o when_o we_o consider_v withal_o that_o it_o set_v out_o our_o sin_n against_o every_o particular_a precept_n that_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o yield_v we_o consololation_n that_o it_o will_v over_o whelm_v we_o with_o despair_n when_o we_o either_o respect_n god_n absolure_n righteousness_n or_o our_o own_o innumerable_a transgression_n against_o his_o bless_a law_n and_o though_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o these_o former_a thing_n may_v be_v good_a and_o powerful_a to_o humble_v we_o and_o somake_n we_o indeed_o more_o fit_a for_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n even_o as_o preparative_n go_v before_o better_a physic_n for_o the_o scour_n away_o of_o bodily_a disease_n yet_o can_v they_o not_o of_o themselves_o help_v or_o heal_v but_o wound_n and_o terrify_v rather_o for_o that_o be_v the_o peculiar_a both_o office_n and_o work_n of_o god_n promise_n make_v essectuall_a in_o our_o heart_n by_o the_o touch_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o than_o that_o though_o the_o ground_n of_o christian_a religion_n and_o the_o main_a point_n of_o faith_n be_v excellent_a thing_n and_o have_v their_o use_n not_o only_o for_o increase_v of_o knowledge_n but_o even_o for_o the_o build_n of_o we_o up_o in_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o well_o do_v and_o be_v well_o feel_v may_v answer_v many_o temptation_n that_o arise_v in_o a_o scrupulous_a and_o doubtful_a mind_n yet_o still_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o word_n minister_v matter_n of_o assure_a comfort_n and_o comfortable_a assurance_n and_o feeling_n which_o also_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o this_o that_o many_o may_v have_v the_o knowledge_n of_o faith_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o day_n of_o temptation_n not_o be_v able_a to_o strengthen_v their_o own_o hand_n or_o other_o but_o to_o proceed_v a_o little_a further_o in_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o point_n we_o can_v but_o confess_v that_o the_o example_n of_o mercy_n and_o comfort_n in_o the_o word_n be_v full_a of_o strong_a &_o sound_a consolation_n because_o they_o be_v as_o if_o it_o be_v so_o many_o seal_v set_v unto_o the_o writing_n of_o god_n promise_n that_o as_o heretofore_o he_o have_v be_v to_o other_o so_o he_o will_v hereafter_o or_o still_o be_v favourable_a unto_o his_o people_n and_o yet_o we_o shall_v see_v that_o they_o lie_v open_a though_o not_o of_o themselves_o yet_o by_o reason_n of_o man_n corrupt_a heart_n to_o many_o exception_n as_o for_o example_n they_o to_o who_o they_o be_v accomplish_v be_v better_a than_o we_o god_n be_v more_o favourable_a then_o than_o he_o will_v be_v now_o because_o we_o have_v more_o mean_n of_o mercy_n and_o have_v profit_v less_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o proper_o fit_a for_o consolation_n as_o the_o promise_n be_v for_o over_o and_o beside_o that_o they_o be_v but_o in_o man_n and_o therefore_o full_a of_o weakness_n and_o want_n we_o know_v and_o confess_v every_o where_n that_o as_o we_o must_v live_v not_o by_o example_n but_o by_o rule_n so_o we_o must_v be_v comfort_v not_o so_o much_o by_o example_n as_o by_o promise_n and_o therefore_o though_o example_n be_v good_a yet_o not_o so_o strong_a whereas_o the_o truth_n certainty_n and_o power_n of_o the_o promise_n be_v from_o the_o might_n and_o mercy_n of_o he_o that_o have_v make_v they_o who_o also_o be_v both_o great_a than_o all_o exception_n and_o free_a from_o the_o least_o show_n or_o shadow_n of_o turn_v and_o yet_o let_v we_o be_v understand_v i_o beseech_v you_o as_o we_o shall_v namely_o that_o we_o ascribe_v not_o this_o excellent_a for_o instruction_n &_o consolation_n have_v even_o no_o other_o use_n in_o we_o than_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o word_n not_o feel_v or_o obey_v namely_o to_o make_v we_o without_o excuse_n or_o to_o cause_v our_o sorrowefull_a &_o heavy_a estate_n to_o become_v more_o sorrowful_a and_o heavy_a because_o we_o see_v holy_a &_o heavenly_a thing_n propound_v unto_o we_o and_o you_o have_v not_o remember_v they_o through_o want_n of_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n propound_v therein_o they_o have_v be_v unto_o they_o as_o if_o they_o have_v either_o not_o be_v at_o all_o or_o as_o though_o they_o have_v contain_v in_o they_o no_o such_o sweetness_n and_o pleasure_n as_o they_o do_v indeed_o and_o let_v we_o not_o think_v this_o strange_a for_o even_o as_o ignorance_n in_o religion_n and_o carelessness_n to_o obey_v the_o thing_n that_o we_o know_v be_v a_o principal_a cause_n of_o all_o transgression_n and_o loose_a life_n man_n not_o be_v either_o willing_a or_o all_o inward_a and_o outward_a discomfort_n and_o distress_n of_o conscience_n especial_o for_o how_o can_v the_o wound_a conscience_n admit_v comfort_n when_o he_o understand_v not_o the_o comfort_n present_v unto_o he_o or_o if_o he_o forget_v it_o where_o be_v his_o joy_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o forgetfulness_n we_o say_v that_o of_o a_o unknown_a thing_n there_o be_v no_o desire_n &_o we_o may_v in_o proportion_n say_v the_o same_o
yet_o we_o shall_v behold_v the_o same_o still_o the_o apostle_n paul_n be_v a_o elect_a vessel_n &_o choose_v to_o carry_v christ_n name_n among_o the_o gentile_n and_o yet_o his_o state_n and_o ourselves_o spiritual_a i_o mean_v that_o other_o be_v constrain_v to_o employ_v about_o bodily_a ease_n relief_n and_o pleasure_n and_o sure_o they_o these_o inward_a sorrow_n &_o grief_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v good_a not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v occupy_v about_o a_o more_o excellent_a part_n the_o soul_n i_o mean_v which_o god_n no_o doubt_n do_v especial_o regard_n but_o also_o because_o they_o bring_v forth_o better_a at_o least_o sure_a i_o be_o more_o spiritual_a effect_n as_o because_o they_o pinch_v more_o more_o earnest_a prayer_n for_o grace_n to_o bear_v with_o patience_n to_o undergo_v with_o profit_n and_o to_o overcome_v through_o strength_n and_o do_v more_o conform_v we_o unto_o the_o image_n of_o our_o head_n in_o his_o sustringe_n who_o endure_v much_o more_o this_o way_n than_o any_o other_o way_n and_o therefore_o also_o better_a or_o more_o excellent_a where_o we_o must_v yet_o further_o note_n that_o that_o be_v not_o simple_o or_o only_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o affliction_n themselves_o but_o because_o god_n accompany_v they_o with_o the_o power_n of_o his_o sanctify_a spirit_n which_o make_v we_o in_o some_o measure_n not_o respect_n have_v be_v and_o be_v foul_o mislead_v &_o err_v in_o matter_n of_o opinion_n and_o fact_n yet_o none_o of_o these_o thing_n fall_v into_o god_n he_o can_v do_v no_o otherwise_o but_o determine_v according_a to_o right_n so_o absolute_a and_o perfect_a be_v all_o and_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v in_o god_n but_o he_o have_v tell_v we_o that_o he_o like_v well_o of_o &_o will_v the_o soul_n almost_o to_o find_v no_o grief_n as_o in_o the_o martyr_n that_o have_v be_v so_o many_o way_n and_o so_o grievous_o torment_v may_v and_o do_v appear_v but_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v overclogged_a with_o sin_n and_o the_o sense_n thereof_o or_o of_o god_n anger_n against_o it_o for_o the_o same_o the_o very_a body_n be_v taint_v thereby_o with_o sundry_a sort_n of_o sickness_n and_o diverse_a kind_n of_o disease_n some_o recoverable_a and_o some_o unrecoverable_a and_o we_o shall_v find_v it_o much_o use_v in_o the_o scripture_n that_o sin_n itself_o be_v compare_v unto_o a_o burden_n which_o may_v in_o part_n appear_v not_o only_o by_o this_o when_o the_o prophet_n call_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n that_o shall_v fall_v upon_o man_n for_o their_o sin_n burden_n that_o so_o there_o may_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o iniquity_n they_o have_v commit_v &_o the_o punishment_n that_o be_v execute_v upon_o they_o for_o it_o but_o also_o by_o a_o plain_a themselves_o in_o body_n and_o in_o soul_n for_o this_o life_n present_a and_o for_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v as_o terror_n and_o fear_n of_o heart_n shame_n and_o confusion_n of_o face_n discredit_v among_o man_n special_o godly_a discord_n yea_o anarchy_n in_o kingdom_n common_a wealth_n and_o family_n and_o what_o not_o and_o indeed_o this_o be_v a_o point_n well_o worth_a the_o wade_v into_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o grossness_n and_o corruption_n of_o the_o age_n wherein_o we_o live_v make_v so_o small_a or_o no_o conscience_n at_o all_o of_o sin_n and_o transgression_n be_v it_o not_o that_o we_o be_v to_o be_v occupy_v in_o some_o other_o point_n of_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n howbeit_o this_o much_o we_o may_v say_v that_o as_o it_o argue_v small_a conscience_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n that_o mitigate_v &_o minse_v it_o so_o it_o minister_v small_a hope_n of_o comfort_n unto_o themselves_o or_o other_o of_o the_o happy_a recovery_n out_o of_o it_o for_o how_o be_v it_o likely_a that_o they_o shall_v be_v cure_v of_o a_o disease_n that_o either_o know_v it_o not_o or_o feel_v it_o not_o or_o take_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o deadly_a and_o dangerous_a as_o it_o be_v whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o tender_a conscience_n charge_v yea_o surcharge_v itself_o with_o more_o than_o it_o shall_v it_o may_v be_v &_o yet_o that_o can_v hardly_o be_v if_o man_n consider_v right_o the_o height_n and_o the_o haynousnes_n yea_o the_o infiniteness_n &_o innumerablenesse_n of_o their_o own_o sin_n general_a and_o particular_a though_o in_o that_o accusation_n it_o suffer_v much_o grief_n yea_o &_o plunge_v itself_o as_o it_o be_v into_o distrustfulnes_n be_v in_o more_o hope_n of_o a_o gracious_a recovery_n which_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o such_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n shall_v minister_v some_o comfort_n because_o sin_v feel_v be_v more_o likely_a by_o repentance_n to_o be_v cure_v and_o heal_v then_o that_o that_o man_n make_v not_o keep_v or_o account_v of_o but_o to_o let_v this_o point_n pass_v and_o to_o come_v to_o that_o that_o do_v more_o nighly_a concern_v our_o purpose_n at_o this_o present_a now_o there_o follow_v the_o last_o word_n of_o this_o 28._o verse_n and_o i_o will_v refresh_v you_o and_o contain_v in_o they_o the_o second_o part_n thereof_o namely_o a_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n for_o the_o better_a draw_v yea_o allure_a of_o we_o unto_o he_o that_o call_v we_o unto_o himself_o but_o yet_o for_o our_o spiritual_a good_a a_o thirsty_a body_n indeed_o will_v rejoice_v to_o hear_v though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o water_n and_o not_o of_o drink_n to_o slake_v the_o thirst_n withal_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o know_v it_o and_o take_v it_o to_o be_v a_o mean_a to_o maintain_v life_n the_o tiding_n of_o ease_n and_o light_v of_o he_o in_o some_o sort_n of_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a burden_n to_o he_o that_o carry_v it_o be_v no_o doubt_n of_o it_o gladsome_a and_o joyful_a also_o because_o it_o be_v a_o toil_n and_o a_o moil_n a_o wearisomnes_n and_o weakness_n to_o body_n and_o mind_n to_o bear_v a_o weight_n yea_o though_o it_o be_v but_o small_a continual_o reason_n &_o our_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o the_o truth_n hereof_o in_o these_o worldly_a thing_n but_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v this_o be_v find_v true_a as_o in_o
where_o else_o either_o to_o be_v seek_v or_o find_v but_o in_o lesus_fw-la christ_n only_o where_o i_o beseech_v you_o first_o to_o mark_v both_o how_o this_o doctrine_n arise_v from_o hence_o and_o no_o comfort_n to_o be_v find_v for_o meat_n drink_n sleep_n friend_n recreation_n and_o such_o like_a be_v comfort_n i_o confess_v but_o not_o true_a and_o sound_a comfort_n for_o a_o distress_a spirit_n for_o the_o affliction_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v inward_a and_o these_o be_v but_o outward_a &_o therefore_o be_v not_o fit_v for_o a_o person_n or_o party_n so_o affect_v and_o i_o will_v as_o soon_o think_v and_o say_v that_o bodily_a food_n be_v the_o proper_a and_o sound_a nourishment_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o suppose_v that_o these_o outward_a thing_n be_v the_o true_a and_o sound_a comfort_n of_o a_o break_a and_o contrite_a heart_n but_o that_o yet_o we_o may_v be_v the_o better_o persuade_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n let_v we_o proceed_v unto_o some_o further_a proof_n of_o it_o this_o be_v not_o in_o my_o mind_n obscure_o signify_v under_o all_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o old_a law_n whether_o they_o be_v ordinary_a or_o extraordinary_a daily_a or_o yearly_o general_a or_o particular_a all_o and_o every_o one_o of_o they_o in_o measure_n more_o or_o less_o tend_v still_o unto_o he_o who_o they_o do_v prefigure_v and_o signify_v as_o the_o know_v and_o confess_v a_o evident_a prophecy_n concern_v christ_n and_o the_o grace_n that_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o he_o if_o with_o a_o lively_a and_o steadfast_a faith_n we_o labour_v to_o lay_v his_o conflict_n in_o the_o garden_n and_o by_o his_o outcry_n upon_o the_o cross_n say_v my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o and_o though_o these_o have_v be_v be_v and_o be_v very_o good_a indeed_o as_o those_o that_o have_v feel_v and_o do_v feel_v they_o know_v and_o confess_v yet_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o that_o our_o joy_n shall_v match_v they_o he_o say_v our_o consolation_n abound_v through_o he_o for_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o proportion_n betwixt_o our_o heaviness_n and_o our_o comfort_n nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o a_o superaboundance_n of_o our_o joy_n above_o our_o grief_n then_o sure_a what_o by_o reason_n of_o satan_n malice_n against_o we_o and_o the_o dulness_n and_o hardness_n of_o our_o own_o heart_n to_o hugeness_n and_o height_n of_o our_o sin_n we_o say_v with_o the_o apostle_n where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v overabounded_a so_o in_o this_o case_n of_o inward_a affliction_n particular_o we_o say_v our_o sorrow_n may_v be_v sore_a and_o our_o grief_n great_a yet_o our_o light_a affliction_n which_o be_v but_o for_o a_o moment_n cause_v unto_o we_o a_o far_o most_o excellent_a and_o eternal_a weight_n as_o of_o glory_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v so_o of_o joy_n in_o this_o life_n raise_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n by_o the_o comfortable_a feel_n thereof_o and_o he_o that_o know_v sound_o and_o feel_o believe_v the_o name_n nature_n person_n and_o office_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n together_o with_o the_o effect_n that_o from_o he_o in_o they_o be_v communicate_v to_o we_o can_v choose_v but_o see_v feel_v and_o confess_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o point_n he_o be_v good_a &_o in_o he_o there_o be_v not_o or_o can_v be_v any_o thing_n but_o that_o which_o be_v absolute_o good_a as_o in_o who_o face_n and_o presence_n also_o there_o be_v the_o fullness_n of_o joy_n for_o evermore_o and_o at_o his_o right_a hand_n pleasure_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o he_o be_v likewise_o so_o good_a that_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o be_v man_n like_o unto_o we_o in_o every_o respect_n sin_n only_o except_v and_o one_o that_o have_v be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n by_o mean_n whereof_o we_o may_v the_o more_o bold_o come_v unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n &_o so_o receive_v mercy_n and_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o confusion_n of_o face_n horror_n of_o heart_n condemnation_n etc._n etc._n be_v it_o that_o most_o sting_v man_n mind_n and_o soul_n now_o all_o these_o be_v take_v away_o in_o christ_n why_o shall_v they_o not_o as_o well_o and_o comfortable_o sing_v that_o triumphant_a song_n o_o death_n where_o be_v thy_o sting_n o_o grave_n or_o hell_n where_o be_v thy_o victory_n the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n and_o the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law_n but_o thanks_n be_v unto_o god_n which_o have_v give_v we_o victory_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o well_o
the_o attainment_n of_o knowledge_n because_o than_o they_o be_v and_o shall_v be_v a_o degree_n near_o to_o grace_n &_o comfort_n than_o before_o which_o have_v once_o obtain_v and_o hearty_a prayer_n make_v unto_o god_n for_o the_o sanctify_a use_n continuance_n and_o increase_n thereof_o in_o they_o they_o shall_v no_o doubt_n in_o good_a time_n come_v to_o feeling_n but_o till_o then_o the_o remedy_n that_o god_n have_v provide_v &_o give_v they_o there_o against_o as_o oppose_v against_o sin_n christ_n suffering_n and_o the_o merit_n thereof_o which_o be_v strong_a to_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n can_v but_o utter_o remove_v the_o effect_n that_o be_v condemnation_n and_o to_o oppose_v against_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n the_o worthiness_n of_o he_o that_o have_v deserve_v all_o in_o all_o not_o for_o himself_o for_o he_o need_v no_o merit_n as_o never_o have_v offend_v but_o for_o we_o that_o in_o his_o righteousness_n we_o may_v stand_v pure_a and_o clean_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o then_o no_o doubt_n but_o if_o we_o do_v this_o these_o temptation_n shall_v be_v the_o more_o easy_a and_o the_o soon_o overcome_v special_o if_o we_o adjoine_v therewith_o all_o prayer_n for_o the_o increase_n &_o strengthen_v of_o our_o faith_n to_o apply_v unto_o ourselves_o all_o the_o sweet_a promise_n and_o comfortable_a example_n of_o the_o word_n which_o indeed_o be_v not_o only_o as_o many_o sure_a seal_n and_o pledge_n set_v thereunto_o but_o so_o many_o particular_a document_n to_o instruct_v we_o what_o to_o do_v because_o god_n be_v not_o in_o this_o sort_n or_o sense_n a_o general_a god_n to_o all_o but_o a_o particular_a god_n to_o the_o faithful_a &_o a_o special_a god_n to_o every_o one_o of_o they_o as_o may_v appear_v by_o these_o word_n of_o the_o faithful_a i_o thank_v my_o god_n and_o in_o prayer_n my_o god_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o this_o apply_v of_o he_o unto_o ourselves_o do_v not_o straighten_v god_n goodness_n in_o itself_o for_o that_o be_v infinite_o large_a nor_o hinder_v it_o from_o other_o for_o he_o may_v and_o do_v give_v to_o all_o abundant_o and_o yet_o all_o they_o have_v to_o the_o full_a and_o he_o himself_o never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o therefore_o a_o second_o doctrine_n that_o we_o may_v learn_v from_o hence_o be_v this_o that_o the_o estate_n of_o a_o distress_a and_o a_o afflict_a spirit_n be_v not_o so_o hard_a or_o heavy_a so_o dangerous_a deadly_a or_o desperate_a as_o many_o man_n in_o the_o world_n take_v it_o and_o will_v make_v it_o to_o be_v this_o to_o have_v call_v or_o command_v but_o christ_n show_v rather_o the_o quite_o and_o clean_o contrary_a namely_o that_o it_o be_v good_a and_o comfortable_a as_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o this_o that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n so_o tender_o regard_v they_o that_o be_v plunge_v into_o that_o misery_n and_o this_o we_o may_v understand_v also_o by_o many_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o by_o that_o before_o allege_v all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o this_o must_v of_o necessity_n come_v from_o god_n or_o from_o nature_n that_o which_o be_v from_o god_n be_v as_o himself_o good_a yea_o very_o good_a that_o which_o be_v from_o nature_n be_v as_o nature_n vitiate_a and_o corrupt_a but_o this_o indeed_o be_v no_o natural_a thing_n as_o may_v appear_v by_o this_o that_o nature_n in_o the_o corruption_n of_o it_o rather_o soothe_v man_n in_o sin_n than_o any_o manner_n of_o way_n charge_v they_o withal_o yea_o nature_n be_v so_o far_o from_o work_v it_o that_o it_o rather_o for_o or_o in_o outward_a thing_n we_o shall_v reason_v as_o they_o do_v and_o have_v it_o follow_v that_o so_o be_v deliver_v we_o may_v easy_o bring_v all_o disorder_n and_o confusion_n into_o the_o
