to_o be_v do_v and_o practise_v by_o we_o the_o brief_a whereof_o be_v in_o the_o decalogue_n describe_v unto_o we_o the_o rule_n of_o 1._o piety_n in_o god_n worship_n 2._o of_o charity_n in_o righteousness_n towards_o man_n within_o these_o bound_n we_o must_v seek_v for_o the_o utmost_a extent_n of_o the_o mere_a natural_a man_n knowledge_n which_o we_o will_v do_v begin_v with_o the_o industrious_a use_n of_o 1._o all_o nature_n help_n attain_v unto_o any_o the_o least_o knowledge_n of_o god_n as_o he_o be_v man_n redeemer_n in_o christ._n this_o be_v most_o apparent_a by_o the_o scripture_n whole_o ascribe_v the_o knowledge_n of_o this_o mystery_n to_o the_o son_n of_o god_n reveal_v it_o from_o the_o bosom_n of_o 12._o the_o father_n and_o to_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n but_o utter_o deny_v so_o much_o as_o a_o thought_n of_o it_o to_o any_o of_o the_o great_a or_o wise_a of_o this_o world_n yea_o unto_o the_o bless_a angel_n themselves_o and_o it_o be_v no_o less_o agreeable_a to_o good_a reason_n which_o forbid_v to_o imagine_v that_o a_o man_n fall_v &_o corrupt_v by_o sin_n shall_v ever_o attain_v to_o the_o understanding_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o adam_n they_o they_o for_o some_o descent_n in_o this_o mystery_n yet_o wickedness_n increase_v in_o man_n as_o fast_o as_o man_n multiply_v in_o the_o earth_n and_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o darksome_a obscurity_n of_o this_o mystery_n in_o those_o first_o time_n of_o the_o world_n it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o this_o knowledge_n quick_o decrease_v be_v almost_o decay_v even_o among_o the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o few_o of_o god_n church_n who_o therefore_o god_n be_v fain_o by_o new_a revelation_n continual_o to_o instruct_v but_o for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n the_o rest_n of_o the_o wicked_a world_n it_o be_v utter_o extinct_a and_o no_o spark_n of_o it_o leave_v alive_a they_o soon_o forget_v what_o they_o care_v not_o to_o believe_v wherefore_o we_o must_v confine_v the_o mere_a natural_a man_n knowledge_n within_o these_o two_o limit_n 1._o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n as_o creator_n 2._o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o beyond_o these_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o he_o to_o go_v the_o knowledge_n of_o which_o though_o very_o much_o eclipse_v in_o adam_n himself_o but_o more_o and_o more_o darken_a in_o his_o posterity_n as_o they_o further_o degenerate_v from_o his_o original_a purity_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o so_o far_o obscure_v except_o in_o such_o who_o brutish_a and_o savage_a education_n have_v make_v they_o equal_a to_o the_o beast_n that_o perish_v but_o that_o by_o careful_a education_n and_o vigilant_a industry_n in_o the_o use_n of_o all_o help_n it_o may_v be_v somewhat_o repair_v though_o this_o some_o what_o be_v but_o a_o have_v to_o do_v with_o more_o than_o man_n in_o this_o business_n it_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o do_v all_o in_o all_o in_o this_o sacred_a ordinance_n when_o therefore_o we_o go_v to_o hear_v let_v we_o put_v on_o all_o holy_a humble_a obedient_a and_o tractable_a affection_n a_o proud_a disdainful_a self-conceited_a contentious_a mind_n be_v unâ—it_v for_o man_n instruction_n most_o opposite_a to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n teach_v who_o must_v needs_o scorn_v to_o be_v their_o master_n that_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v too_o good_a to_o be_v his_o scholar_n again_o a_o malicious_a unclean_a worldly_a voluptuous_a heart_n stand_v contradictory_n to_o the_o holiness_n of_o this_o bless_a spirit_n those_o proud_a affection_n hinder_v we_o in_o know_v these_o impure_a lust_n in_o do_v our_o master_n will_n both_o together_o or_o each_o alone_o make_v the_o word_n utter_o unprofitable_a unto_o we_o 2._o what_o the_o duty_n of_o minister_n be_v in_o preach_v the_o word_n this_o be_v threefold_a one_o respect_v the_o work_n two_o the_o issue_n of_o it_o for_o the_o work_n itself_o the_o nature_n and_o spiritual_a quality_n thereof_o shall_v teach_v they_o that_o a_o man_n can_v be_v too_o diligent_a in_o do_v god_n work_v or_o that_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o define_v precise_o what_o and_o how_o far_o humane_a help_n be_v to_o be_v use_v in_o divinity_n but_o yet_o this_o be_v apparent_a a_o singular_a fault_n there_o be_v in_o man_n preparation_n to_o this_o work_n who_o either_o intend_v not_o at_o all_o the_o save_n of_o man_n soul_n or_o if_o assistance_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o his_o preach_n to_o bless_v his_o meditation_n that_o he_o have_v put_v into_o his_o heart_n to_o make_v they_o effectual_a in_o the_o hearer_n etc._n etc._n when_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n his_o conscience_n tell_v he_o that_o in_o his_o study_a preparation_n he_o seek_v for_o nothing_o less_o than_o the_o aid_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o his_o preach_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o publish_v the_o word_n not_o of_o god_n but_o of_o man_n wisdom_n in_o the_o issue_n of_o this_o work_n there_o be_v a_o double_a duty_n 1._o if_o it_o succeed_v well_o thankful_a humility_n oppose_v to_o pride_n that_o 10._o when_o man_n be_v convert_v by_o his_o ministry_n he_o ascribe_v all_o to_o god_n nothing_o to_o himself_o who_o be_v but_o the_o saw_n in_o according_a to_o the_o instinct_n of_o nature_n in_o brute_n beast_n and_o according_a to_o the_o same_o instinct_n of_o nature_n in_o man_n but_o guide_v and_o moderate_v by_o right_a reason_n reasonable_a affection_n be_v then_o due_o stir_v up_o when_o their_o motion_n about_o all_o spiritual_a and_o moral_a good_a or_o evil_n be_v conformable_a to_o the_o quality_n of_o the_o object_n affect_v and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o a_o right_o inform_v understanding_n let_v we_o now_o see_v what_o affection_n they_o be_v that_o grace_n work_v upon_o and_o how_o they_o be_v excite_v before_o man_n be_v convert_v for_o sensual_a affection_n tend_v to_o a_o mere_a natural_a good_a or_o evil_n albeit_o it_o be_v most_o true_a that_o grace_n sanctify_v we_o throughout_o have_v a_o singular_a work_n upon_o they_o too_o in_o moderate_v the_o excess_n and_o repress_v the_o distemper_a motion_n of_o such_o passion_n as_o arise_v from_o our_o natural_a or_o personal_a temper_n as_o of_o choler_n lust_n etc._n etc._n yet_o we_o will_v not_o be_v so_o uncharitable_a as_o to_o think_v our_o adversary_n mean_v these_o affection_n in_o this_o business_n for_o 1._o it_o be_v a_o strange_a fancy_n to_o think_v that_o grace_n shall_v begin_v to_o rectify_v the_o inferior_a faculty_n in_o a_o man_n before_o it_o have_v put_v in_o order_n the_o superior_a to_o rectify_v the_o sensitive_a their_o motion_n about_o natural_a and_o bodily_a thing_n i_o confess_v it_o be_v good_a they_o shall_v be_v so_o but_o what_o special_a virtue_n have_v that_o to_o procure_v unto_o man_n will_n a_o free_a exercise_n of_o its_o liberty_n in_o heavenly_a or_o spiritual_a thing_n as_o the_o arminian_n affirm_v the_o excitation_n of_o the_o affection_n do_v unless_o we_o shall_v go_v further_o and_o as_o be_v spiritual_o good_a or_o evil_n the_o arminian_n give_v a_o very_a large_a allowance_n of_o grace_n to_o a_o unregenerate_a man_n and_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o beside_o the_o knowledge_n of_o sin_n a_o sorrow_n for_o it_o in_o regard_n of_o punishment_n a_o fear_n of_o god_n wrath_n a_o desire_n to_o be_v free_a from_o it_o all_o which_o we_o confess_v may_v be_v in_o a_o man_n affection_n move_v he_o towards_o grace_n and_o godliness_n be_v true_a or_o counterfeit_n if_o these_o motion_n be_v indeed_o true_a and_o right_a so_o that_o a_o unconverted_a man_n do_v true_o sorrow_n for_o his_o sinful_a state_n true_o grieve_v for_o god_n displeasure_n true_o desire_v the_o grace_n of_o regeneration_n hearty_o thirst_v after_o righteousness_n unfeigned_o love_v the_o truth_n if_o he_o be_v true_o humble_a can_v pray_v confess_v sin_n purpose_n amendment_n and_o all_o this_o true_o without_o hypocrisy_n than_o we_o desire_v to_o be_v resolve_v in_o these_o doubt_n 1._o what_o can_v be_v do_v by_o a_o man_n after_o his_o conversion_n more_o than_o he_o can_v do_v in_o these_o thing_n before_o he_o be_v convert_v at_o all_o time_n he_o can_v but_o do_v they_o true_o that_o be_v spiritual_o and_o this_o he_o may_v do_v as_o well_o before_o as_o after_o conversion_n 2._o whether_o it_o be_v not_o admirable_a and_o unconceivable_a to_o any_o man_n understanding_n how_o the_o affection_n can_v be_v thus_o move_v and_o yet_o the_o will_v remain_v untouched_a for_o whereas_o they_o say_v that_o a_o sinner_n may_v out_o of_o true_a sense_n and_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n true_o desire_v grace_n and_o freedom_n by_o christ_n before_o such_o time_n as_o his_o will_n do_v assent_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n it_o be_v most_o strange_a how_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v hearty_o and_o unfeigned_o desire_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n and_o yet_o at_o the_o same_o time_n not_o assent_v be_v true_a thus_o first_o that_o they_o annihilate_v and_o overthrow_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o whereas_o the_o understanding_n will_n and_o affection_n be_v in_o our_o conversion_n chief_o to_o be_v respect_v it_o be_v manifest_a that_o by_o their_o doctrine_n grace_n have_v no_o work_n upon_o any_o of_o these_o not_o upon_o the_o understanding_n to_o enlighten_v it_o for_o say_v they_o that_o be_v do_v by_o the_o clear_a evidence_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v not_o upon_o the_o affection_n to_o rectify_v their_o motion_n for_o say_v they_o the_o affection_n follow_v the_o understanding_n and_o be_v present_o in_o order_n as_o soon_o as_o that_o be_v inform_v last_o not_o upon_o the_o will_v to_o incline_v that_o to_o embrace_v the_o promise_n for_o that_o say_v they_o be_v leave_v absolute_o to_o its_o own_o liberty_n and_o of_o itself_o it_o may_v consent_v or_o dissent_v where_o then_o be_v any_o work_n leave_v for_o grace_n unless_o that_o glorious_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o bring_v a_o sinner_n unto_o himself_o so_o much_o magnify_v in_o scripture_n and_o by_o all_o man_n be_v now_o at_o last_o nothing_o but_o only_o the_o revelation_n amend_v final_o our_o will_n have_v not_o rebellious_a inclination_n in_o they_o but_o they_o can_v of_o themselves_o without_o further_a help_n choose_v that_o which_o be_v good_a so_o that_o if_o arminius_n be_v not_o deceive_v in_o his_o we_o may_v now_o change_v our_o opinion_n of_o ourselves_o and_o think_v that_o we_o be_v at_o lest_o something_o but_o what_o then_o be_v become_v of_o that_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o we_o of_o that_o universal_a corruption_n and_o disorder_n of_o our_o whole_a nature_n so_o much_o speak_v of_o so_o much_o complain_v of_o be_v it_o vanish_v it_o be_v not_o so_o well_o but_o these_o man_n have_v vanish_v away_o in_o their_o imagination_n and_o have_v dispute_v so_o long_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o man_n corruption_n till_o in_o conclusion_n they_o have_v lose_v both_o and_o be_v become_v wilful_o ignorant_a of_o the_o one_o and_o malicious_a enemy_n to_o the_o other_o hitherto_o the_o explication_n of_o their_o opinion_n their_o error_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o man_n power_n so_o to_o resist_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n as_o final_o to_o hinder_v his_o own_o conversion_n we_o maintain_v the_o negative_a that_o where_o god_n purpose_v those_o mean_n as_o 1._o knowledge_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o main_a matter_n of_o religion_n concern_v faith_n and_o practice_n 2._o touch_v of_o conscience_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n arise_v from_o a_o clear_a discovery_n and_o conviction_n of_o a_o man_n forlorn_a estate_n 3._o a_o fear_n and_o horror_n of_o god_n punish_v vengeance_n join_v with_o a_o natural_a grief_n of_o heart_n that_o he_o be_v bring_v into_o so_o much_o unavoidable_a misery_n 4._o a_o thought_n and_o wish_n for_o freedom_n by_o some_o mean_n or_o other_o 5._o some_o slight_a hope_n of_o help_n from_o the_o promise_n of_o grace_n so_o general_o make_v as_o none_o seem_v to_o be_v exclude_v upon_o the_o apprehension_n whereof_o some_o kind_n of_o joy_n will_v also_o arise_v in_o the_o heart_n regard_n 1._o of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n themselves_o which_o be_v good_a and_o our_o very_a necessary_a obedience_n to_o do_v they_o be_v strict_o enjoin_v by_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n 2._o of_o the_o event_n that_o follow_v upon_o they_o according_a to_o god_n promise_n and_o his_o ordinary_a proceed_n in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v such_o that_o he_o bestow_v not_o his_o grace_n ordinary_o but_o upon_o those_o that_o conform_v themselves_o to_o the_o do_v of_o those_o thing_n nevertheless_o our_o divine_n teach_v this_o also_o which_o be_v true_a and_o
