by_o his_o own_o power_n why_o do_v he_o not_o declare_v so_o much_o to_o they_o and_o tell_v they_o that_o the_o thing_n be_v even_o so_o as_o they_o apprehend_v that_o no_o man_n nor_o creature_n conceive_v in_o which_o contest_v with_o they_o he_o assert_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o god_n to_o who_o it_o belong_v to_o pardon_v sin_n therefore_o christ_n charge_v they_o with_o evil_a thought_n of_o he_o as_o it_o be_v express_v by_o matthew_n in_o his_o relate_n of_o the_o story_n matth._n 9_o 4._o not_o because_o they_o imagine_v that_o he_o exercise_v that_o power_n which_o he_o do_v that_o christ_n to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o error_n in_o restrain_v and_o straightn_v he_o in_o his_o power_n which_o they_o will_v grant_v to_o god_n but_o not_o to_o he_o speak_v these_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n as_o he_o be_v god_n i_o say_v he_o can_v not_o be_v but_o one_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n for_o so_o many_o if_o he_o have_v not_o be_v god_n he_o also_o say_v he_o can_v not_o have_v suffer_v the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n but_o as_o he_o be_v man_n but_o i_o say_v and_o shall_v prove_v it_o i_o hope_v before_o i_o finish_v this_o work_n that_o if_o the_o have_v be_v no_o more_o but_o man_n he_o can_v not_o have_v suffer_v the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n for_o so_o many_o man_n the_o conclusion_n be_v this_o that_o though_o a_o creature_n obey_v the_o law_n and_o a_o creature_n suffer_v the_o curse_n of_o it_o yet_o the_o person_n that_o do_v both_o the_o one_o and_o other_o be_v not_o a_o mere_a creature_n but_o more_o than_o a_o creature_n therefore_o the_o righteousness_n of_o this_o person_n be_v more_o than_o a_o mere_a creature_n righteousness_n but_o he_o say_v he_o make_v haste_n to_o the_o seven_o instance_n and_o it_o appear_v he_o make_v more_o haste_n then_o good_a speed_n when_o he_o leave_v the_o main_a work_n behind_o he_o undo_v when_o he_o do_v outrun_v the_o scripture_n wherein_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o instance_n and_o argument_n lay_v yet_o as_o hasty_a as_o he_o be_v though_o i_o take_v a_o little_a more_o leisure_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o to_o overtake_v he_o at_o last_o instance_n 7._o if_o christ_n be_v a_o mere_a creature_n then_o to_o pardon_v sin_n belong_v not_o to_o he_o because_o the_o scripture_n testify_v that_o none_o can_v forgive_v sin_n but_o god_n because_o all_o sin_n be_v against_o god_n 7._o jer._n 31._o 34._o yea_o certain_o when_o i_o use_v those_o word_n which_o the_o scripture_n testify_v i_o mind_v such_o like_a scripture_n as_o these_o yet_o i_o will_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o the_o say_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharise_n be_v in_o my_o mind_n and_o if_o i_o have_v quote_v the_o place_n where_o they_o assert_v it_o as_o the_o prerogative_n of_o god_n to_o forgive_v sin_n i_o need_v not_o be_v ashamed_a because_o as_o dark_a as_o they_o be_v in_o other_o thing_n they_o be_v clear_a enough_o in_o this_o and_o assert_v nothing_o but_o what_o the_o scripture_n clear_o be_v also_o the_o son_n of_o man_n on_o earth_n and_o therefore_o he_o use_v these_o word_n that_o you_o may_v know_v that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n have_v power_n on_o earth_n this_o contest_v of_o christ_n with_o the_o scribe_n put_v it_o out_o of_o doubt_n that_o christ_n challenge_v to_o be_v principal_a and_o equal_a with_o the_o father_n in_o pardon_v sin_n and_o will_v not_o own_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o false_a conceit_n of_o christ_n after_o this_o manner_n do_v we_o charge_v this_o person_n with_o blasphemy_n because_o he_o forgive_v sin_n be_v but_o a_o man_n and_o not_o god_n as_o we_o have_v think_v and_o yet_o he_o know_v the_o thought_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o discover_v that_o which_o we_o have_v only_o conceive_v and_o have_v not_o utter_v and_o who_o can_v do_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o this_o but_o god_n whether_o be_v it_o easy_a to_o say_v thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o or_o to_o say_v wherefore_o think_v you_o evil_a in_o your_o heart_n before_o their_o eye_n for_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v confute_v those_o evil_a thought_n they_o have_v conceive_v and_o harbour_v in_o their_o heart_n concern_v he_o viz._n that_o he_o have_v blaspheme_v because_o be_v but_o a_o man_n he_o have_v arrogate_a and_o assume_v that_o power_n to_o himself_o which_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n have_v this_o be_v the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n error_n that_o they_o think_v he_o take_v to_o himself_o that_o power_n which_o indeed_o he_o do_v not_o viz._n a_o absolute_a and_o independent_a power_n in_o remit_v sin_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v but_o a_o derive_v power_n which_o he_o have_v from_o another_o and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o his_o own_o which_o he_o exercise_v then_o in_o the_o work_n of_o this_o miracle_n that_o they_o may_v know_v that_o they_o err_v in_o their_o conception_n concern_v his_o manner_n of_o work_v he_o shall_v at_o this_o time_n especial_o rather_o than_o at_o another_o time_n by_o invocation_n upon_o his_o father_n have_v effect_v it_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o christ_n design_n be_v in_o work_v this_o miracle_n to_o teach_v they_o somewhat_o which_o they_o understand_v not_o and_o to_o rectify_v their_o apprehension_n concern_v himself_o as_o these_o word_n import_v that_o you_o may_v know_v that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n have_v power_n on_o earth_n to_o forgive_v sin_n i_o say_v unto_o thou_o who_o be_v sick_a etc._n etc._n arise_v and_o walk_v now_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v teach_v they_o be_v this_o it_o that_o he_o do_v act_v dependent_o upon_o his_o father_n and_o have_v no_o such_o power_n of_o his_o own_o to_o forgive_v sin_n but_o derive_v it_o from_o his_o father_n if_o so_o be_v this_o the_o mean_n or_o the_o way_n to_o convince_v they_o of_o it_o to_o command_v in_o his_o own_o name_n the_o impotent_a man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o so_o deadly_a a_o disease_n to_o arise_v and_o walk_v without_o any_o look_v up_o to_o heaven_n or_o groan_v in_o his_o spirit_n or_o speak_v unto_o god_n his_o father_n to_o effect_v it_o in_o he_o or_o by_o he_o be_v it_o not_o rather_o the_o way_n to_o confirm_v they_o in_o their_o error_n if_o that_o be_v their_o error_n then_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n therefore_o it_o be_v manifest_a and_o clear_a that_o he_o will_v teach_v they_o some_o other_o thing_n wherein_o indeed_o they_o err_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n to_o be_v rectify_v they_o think_v he_o but_o a_o man_n and_o that_o he_o usurp_v that_o power_n which_o belong_v not_o unto_o he_o but_o be_v proper_a to_o god_n and_o that_o be_v to_o forgive_v sin_n in_o his_o own_o name_n and_o not_o ministerial_o but_o by_o and_o from_o himself_o this_o they_o call_v blasphemy_n now_o he_o will_v in_o this_o rectify_v their_o err_a judgement_n by_o work_v a_o miracle_n in_o his_o own_o name_n and_o by_o a_o command_a word_n accompany_v with_o answerable_a power_n and_o therefore_o say_v that_o you_o may_v know_v that_o the_o son_n of_o man_n even_o he_o himself_o have_v power_n in_o himself_o and_o not_o derive_v from_o any_o other_o to_o forgive_v sin_n i_o say_v even_o i_o speak_v it_o as_o one_o that_o have_v authority_n in_o myself_o and_o need_v not_o to_o seek_v out_o to_o any_o other_o i_o say_v arise_v and_o walk_v this_o absolute_a and_o independent_a way_n and_o manner_n of_o work_v this_o miracle_n be_v a_o good_a demonstration_n in_o what_o way_n and_o after_o what_o manner_n he_o forgive_v sin_n and_o both_o by_o the_o one_o and_o by_o the_o other_o he_o will_v convince_v the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n that_o he_o though_o clothe_v in_o flesh_n and_o appear_v only_o as_o a_o man_n be_v yet_o god_n equal_a with_o his_o father_n and_o can_v work_v the_o same_o work_n of_o his_o father_n now_o though_o christ_n seem_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o act_n of_o forgive_a sin_n as_o a_o easy_a work_n than_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v to_o the_o sick_a man_n arise_v and_o walk_v as_o these_o word_n of_o his_o seem_v to_o import_v whether_o be_v it_o easy_o etc._n etc._n yet_o the_o work_n be_v both_o alike_o though_o one_o not_o easy_a than_o the_o other_o nor_o do_v christ_n look_v upon_o the_o one_o as_o easy_a than_o the_o other_o nor_o do_v the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n look_v upon_o one_o as_o easy_a than_o the_o other_o for_o they_o look_v upon_o the_o act_n of_o absolve_v from_o sin_n as_o proper_a to_o god_n and_o not_o appertain_v to_o man_n but_o withal_o they_o think_v that_o he_o delude_v the_o people_n when_o he_o speak_v the_o word_n thy_o sin_n be_v forgive_v thou_o because_o the_o effect_n be_v inward_a and_o not_o to_o be_v discern_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o the_o people_n can_v not_o
have_v deny_v he_o to_o be_v god_n in_o his_o pardon_v of_o man_n sin_n his_o three_o scripture_n be_v act_n 5._o 30_o 31._o the_o god_n of_o our_o father_n raise_v up_o jesus_n who_o you_o slay_v and_o hang_v on_o a_o tree_n he_o have_v god_n exalt_v with_o his_o right_a hand_n to_o be_v a_o prince_n and_o a_o saviour_n for_o to_o give_v repentance_n unto_o israel_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o consideration_n in_o scripture_n he_o may_v be_v look_v upon_o absolute_o as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o second_o person_n in_o the_o trinity_n as_o jehovah_n and_o as_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d very_a god_n or_o he_o may_v be_v look_v upon_o relative_o as_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d god_n man_n as_o â—mmanuel_n god_n with_o we_o or_o in_o our_o nature_n as_o god_n manifest_a in_o the_o flesh_n and_o as_o send_v into_o the_o world_n and_o execute_v the_o office_n of_o mediator_n if_o he_o be_v consider_v in_o the_o former_a acception_n he_o be_v essential_o lord_n and_o that_o one_o lawgiver_n in_o all_o the_o creature_n be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o giver_n hand_n and_o subject_n to_o he_o and_o every_o transgression_n and_o sin_n that_o be_v commit_v be_v against_o he_o and_o it_o belong_v to_o he_o with_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o be_v one_o god_n with_o himself_o to_o pardon_v sin_n to_o acquit_v from_o the_o guilt_n and_o to_o deliver_v from_o the_o curse_n thereof_o because_o he_o can_v turn_v away_o his_o wrath_n and_o have_v power_n over_o all_o plague_n and_o can_v save_v from_o they_o and_o so_o he_o receive_v no_o power_n to_o forgive_v sin_n but_o it_o belong_v to_o he_o and_o can_v be_v separate_v from_o his_o godhead_n but_o be_v natural_o essential_o and_o eternal_o he_o but_o if_o he_o be_v consider_v in_o the_o latter_a acception_n than_o many_o thing_n be_v derive_v to_o he_o as_o the_o office_n of_o mediatorship_n and_o a_o lordship_n and_o the_o name_n saviour_n be_v give_v he_o upon_o that_o account_n which_o be_v a_o name_n above_o every_o name_n of_o the_o creature_n and_o prince_n and_o captain_n of_o our_o salvation_n be_v a_o name_n put_v upon_o he_o and_o belong_v to_o he_o in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v give_v to_o he_o to_o give_v repentance_n unto_o israel_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n now_o it_o must_v be_v understand_v as_o i_o have_v express_v in_o my_o former_a treatise_n that_o the_o give_v of_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o deny_v any_o intrinsical_n or_o inward_a perfection_n which_o christ_n have_v but_o rather_o suppose_v it_o and_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v that_o christ_n to_o who_o these_o thing_n be_v give_v according_a to_o his_o due_a nature_n have_v all_o his_o perfection_n without_o the_o gift_n of_o these_o and_o that_o these_o be_v but_o declarative_a and_o do_v it_o effectual_o and_o spiritual_o pronounce_v and_o discharge_v the_o conscience_n from_o all_o sin_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o difference_n they_o do_v it_o as_o man_n therefore_o in_o weakness_n and_o can_v speak_v but_o be_v not_o able_a to_o effect_v what_o they_o speak_v but_o christ_n do_v it_o as_o the_o son_n of_o god_n yea_o as_o the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n as_o the_o apostle_n testify_v heb._n 7._o 3._o so_o that_o the_o very_a priesthood_n of_o christ_n that_o it_o may_v be_v effectual_a in_o the_o work_n of_o it_o and_o this_o of_o pardon_v of_o of_o of_o he_o that_o he_o walk_v but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v of_o his_o body_n only_o and_o not_o of_o his_o mind_n yet_o because_o of_o the_o union_n betwixt_o body_n and_o soul_n both_o
