to_o that_o strength_n which_o god_n have_v former_o imprint_v in_o prevent_v grace_n which_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o enlargement_n of_o habitual_a grace_n in_o the_o natural_a measure_n of_o it_o as_o when_o health_n be_v make_v to_o rise_v to_o a_o great_a degree_n of_o strength_n or_o whether_o it_o be_v a_o efficacious_a motion_n of_o god_n spirit_n powerful_o strengthen_v the_o inherent_a grace_n to_o the_o act_n of_o aversation_n and_o resistance_n of_o sin_n and_o temptation_n it_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o acute_a and_o disputable_a inquiry_n yet_o whether_o the_o one_o or_o whether_o the_o other_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o either_o more_o confirm_v and_o establish_v and_o uphold_v and_o keep_v from_o sin_n 3._o by_o quicken_a grace_n which_o be_v when_o god_n do_v inlve_v grace_n by_o quicken_a grace_n our_o grace_n to_o manifest_v themselves_o in_o actual_a opposition_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n shall_v not_o yield_v but_o keep_v off_o from_o entertain_v the_o sin_n as_o when_o in_o the_o motion_n of_o sin_n he_o inflame_v the_o heart_n with_o a_o apprehension_n of_o his_o own_o love_n in_o christ_n and_o then_o excite_v our_o love_n exceed_o unto_o himself_o again_o whereby_o the_o heart_n be_v make_v marvellous_o averse_a and_o to_o detest_v any_o closure_n with_o this_o sin_n by_o which_o so_o ample_a and_o gracious_a a_o love_n shall_v be_v wrong_v and_o abuse_v or_o as_o when_o in_o the_o temptation_n to_o sin_n he_o excite_v that_o affection_n of_o holy_a fear_n which_o work_v that_o filial_a and_o awful_a regard_n to_o a_o great_a god_n and_o a_o confer_v that_o effectual_a grace_n by_o direct_v grace_n wisdom_n to_o the_o mind_n tenderness_n to_o the_o conscience_n watchfulness_n to_o the_o heart_n that_o his_o servant_n become_v great_o solicitous_a of_o his_o honour_n scrupulous_o jealous_a of_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o just_o regardful_a of_o the_o honour_n of_o their_o holy_a profession_n and_o therefore_o they_o decline_v all_o occasion_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o may_v over-lay_a their_o own_o strength_n and_o daily_n not_o with_o the_o temptation_n or_o with_o the_o first_o motion_n but_o as_o they_o be_v in_o fear_n of_o themselves_o so_o they_o be_v in_o defiance_n not_o only_o with_o apparent_a sin_n but_o also_o with_o the_o appearance_n of_o they_o and_o shun_v not_o only_o the_o sin_n but_o the_o inlet_n and_o preparation_n to_o the_o sin_n and_o very_o he_o shall_v be_v much_o keep_v from_o the_o secrecy_n of_o sin_n as_o a_o king_n who_o be_v wise_a to_o keep_v off_o parle_n with_o the_o filthy_a fountain_n a_o lewd_a womb_n a_o sin_v sin_n impel_v entice_a egg_v on_o the_o soul_n to_o consent_n and_o act_n unlawful_a and_o that_o upon_o all_o occasion_n without_o any_o distinction_n of_o great_a or_o little_a and_o that_o be_v the_o positive_a nature_n of_o it_o though_o inherent_a grace_n do_v much_o abate_v and_o keep_v under_o that_o sinful_a nature_n as_o a_o naughty_a servant_n may_v be_v hold_v down_o by_o a_o good_a and_o strong_a master_n yet_o it_o be_v of_o a_o false_a deceitful_a and_o capable_a nature_n for_o the_o vile_a impression_n of_o actual_a sin_n 2._o his_o impotency_n and_o self_n inability_n to_o keep_v off_o himself_o from_o sin_n his_o impotency_n to_o keep_v himself_o from_o such_o sin_n such_o sin_n beloved_n it_o be_v true_a that_o grace_n be_v a_o sweet_a and_o enable_v quality_n he_o who_o receive_v grace_n do_v with_o it_o receive_v a_o measure_n of_o strength_n proportion_v to_o the_o degree_n of_o grace_n receive_v and_o no_o man_n be_v so_o vain_a to_o conceive_v that_o a_o person_n receive_v grace_n can_v do_v no_o more_o against_o sin_n than_o he_o who_o note_v be_v never_o arm_v with_o such_o heavenly_a power_n but_o then_o divine_n have_v well_o distinguish_v that_o as_o there_o must_v be_v a_o first_o grace_n which_o they_o call_v gratia_fw-la operans_fw-la to_o change_v the_o nature_n within_o so_o there_o must_v be_v a_o second_o grace_n which_o they_o call_v gratia_fw-la co-operans_a to_o assist_v the_o soul_n and_o the_o first_o grace_n against_o the_o insolency_n of_o corruption_n and_o of_o actual_a temptation_n grace_n can_v do_v much_o but_o of_o itself_o not_o always_o enough_o to_o keep_v off_o a_o sin_n it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o distance_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o sin_n depend_v note_n on_o grace_n but_o that_o the_o soul_n keep_v a_o distance_n from_o such_o a_o sin_n i_o that_o such_o a_o sin_n do_v not_o engage_v and_o lay_v flat_a the_o soul_n this_o do_v not_o owe_v itself_o to_o the_o mere_a and_o natural_a strength_n of_o the_o the_o first_o create_v grace_n but_o to_o that_o grace_n as_o assisted_z and_o support_v by_o a_o high_a hand_n from_o heaven_n so_o far_o as_o i_o yet_o conjecture_v that_o principal_o effectual_a strength_n of_o create_a grace_n be_v more_o in_o its_o dependence_n then_o in_o its_o self_n as_o a_o arm_n be_v strong_a and_o able_a to_o do_v much_o service_n and_o to_o put_v off_o several_a assault_n but_o principal_o by_o reason_n of_o its_o communion_n with_o the_o head_n from_o which_o if_o it_o be_v separate_v it_o can_v from_o above_o from_o its_o head_n which_o be_v christ_n and_o from_o god_n who_o be_v the_o father_n of_o light_n suppose_v grace_n leave_v entire_o and_o sole_o to_o itself_o a_o person_n will_v be_v expose_v to_o many_o and_o foul_a miscarriage_n though_o the_o water_n be_v well_o heat_v yet_o remove_v the_o fire_n and_o the_o natural_a cold_n will_v return_v and_o prevail_v over_o that_o accidental_a heat_n the_o natural_a habit_n of_o sin_n will_v easy_o have_v the_o better_a of_o the_o extrinsical_a habit_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o these_o hold_v up_o and_o back_v by_o a_o high_a arm_n then_o that_o of_o itself_o or_o then_o that_o in_o corruption_n work_v against_o it_o you_o know_v that_o all_o adam_n strength_n be_v not_o canon_n proof_n against_o satan_n temptation_n he_o assault_v and_o enter_v his_o castle_n and_o lay_v he_o flat_a and_o all_o the_o world_n with_o he_o peter_n though_o a_o very_a good_a man_n and_o a_o very_a forward_a disciple_n one_o qualify_v with_o much_o grace_n and_o high_a affection_n yet_o be_v beat_v down_o in_o plain_a field_n he_o can_v not_o preserve_v and_o keep_v back_o himself_o though_o arm_v beforehand_o with_o a_o warn_n from_o his_o master_n but_o deny_v he_o thrice_o and_o that_o with_o some_o high_a qualification_n too_o nay_o the_o great_a fall_n of_o the_o best_a man_n we_o ever_o hear_v of_o in_o scripture_n show_v thus_o much_o that_o it_o be_v not_o their_o sword_n and_o their_o own_o spear_n that_o it_o be_v not_o their_o own_o strength_n which_o can_v keep_v they_o entire_o back_o and_o point_n unto_o we_o not_o only_o the_o impotency_n of_o our_o own_o guard_n but_o also_o the_o name_n by_o which_o we_o stand_v and_o therefore_o be_v it_o that_o david_n pray_v keep_v back_o thy_o servant_n from_o they_o to_o the_o ground_n many_o low_a shrub_n and_o that_o the_o sinning_n of_o good_a man_n be_v easy_o snare_n whereby_o other_o man_n will_v encourage_v and_o deceive_v themselves_o 2._o such_o
