contrary_a nothing_o be_v bitter_a nor_o hurt_n if_o sin_n be_v remove_v paul_n have_v a_o good_a conscience_n because_o sin_n be_v not_o join_v with_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o affliction_n because_o he_o see_v god_n in_o his_o power_n and_o holiness_n and_o sin_n contrary_a unto_o the_o pure_a nature_n of_o god_n and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o the_o jailor_n be_v so_o affright_v be_v it_o because_o the_o prison_n door_n be_v open_v no_o but_o because_o he_o apprehend_v a_o wonderful_a power_n in_o god_n there_o be_v a_o glimpse_n of_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o shine_v into_o his_o heart_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o so_o affright_v he_o so_o you_o see_v that_o the_o more_o that_o any_o man_n see_v into_o the_o power_n and_o majesty_n of_o god_n the_o more_o bitter_a will_v sin_n be_v unto_o the_o soul_n as_o we_o see_v in_o judas_n he_o see_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o then_o sin_n become_v bitter_a unto_o he_o now_o there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o god_n bear_v the_o burden_n of_o his_o child_n and_o keep_v it_o off_o from_o they_o else_o with_o judas_n they_o will_v sink_v under_o they_o again_o sometime_o he_o do_v not_o lay_v disobedient_a unto_o punishment_n the_o three_o reason_n be_v because_o of_o the_o justice_n of_o reason_n god_n if_o he_o shall_v not_o punish_v sinner_n when_o they_o sin_n if_o he_o shall_v not_o make_v they_o to_o feel_v that_o sin_n be_v bitter_a soon_o or_o latter_a he_o shall_v not_o be_v god_n therefore_o say_v abraham_n shall_v not_o the_o god_n of_o all_o the_o earth_n do_v right_a as_o you_o say_v it_o be_v when_o on_o the_o contrary_a the_o godly_a suffer_v much_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o man_n judgement_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n in_o this_o so_o in_o god_n it_o be_v his_o essence_n the_o second_o reason_n be_v this_o he_o bear_v long_o with_o wicked_a man_n for_o the_o propagation_n and_o increase_v of_o reason_n mankind_n for_o if_o he_o shall_v punish_v man_n as_o fast_o as_o they_o offend_v and_o deserve_v death_n how_o shall_v the_o church_n increase_v how_o shall_v the_o church_n stand_v this_o be_v to_o overthrow_v and_o weaken_v his_o own_o power_n but_o god_n be_v wise_a and_o know_v better_o how_o to_o turn_v the_o evil_a intention_n and_o deed_n of_o man_n for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o church_n as_o for_o example_n if_o a_o captain_n upon_o some_o general_a fault_n commit_v by_o his_o soldier_n if_o he_o shall_v execute_v all_o offender_n this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o destroy_v his_o army_n and_o so_o expose_v himself_o unto_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o enemy_n therefore_o he_o take_v but_o a_o few_o here_o one_o and_o there_o one_o to_o make_v the_o rest_n to_o take_v heed_n they_o fall_v not_o again_o thus_o do_v god_n he_o do_v not_o inflict_v punishment_n that_o be_v present_a death_n upon_o all_o sinner_n but_o take_v here_o and_o there_o one_o to_o make_v they_o palpable_a example_n patient_o bear_v with_o offender_n be_v this_o he_o do_v it_o for_o the_o good_a of_o some_o reason_n that_o be_v yet_o to_o be_v call_v and_o therefore_o you_o know_v what_o the_o lord_n say_v unto_o the_o husbandman_n in_o the_o gospel_n when_o he_o will_v have_v pluck_v up_o the_o tare_n let_v they_o alone_o say_v he_o until_o the_o harvest_n yet_o howsoever_o this_o comparison_n do_v not_o reason_n do_v god_n forbear_v long_o to_o punish_v the_o wicked_a lest_o he_o shall_v destroy_v the_o seed_n of_o the_o righteous_a the_o four_o reason_n why_o god_n suffer_v long_o be_v this_o that_o he_o may_v try_v the_o heart_n how_o it_o will_v carry_v it_o reason_n self_n towards_o he_o not_o that_o he_o know_v not_o the_o heart_n before_o but_o that_o the_o heart_n may_v now_o know_v that_o check_v of_o conscience_n after_o to_o reclaim_v they_o i_o say_v if_o man_n do_v but_o consider_v this_o they_o can_v not_o but_o say_v that_o god_n be_v patient_a the_o five_o reason_n be_v this_o although_o they_o be_v not_o reason_n afflict_v as_o other_o man_n be_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o be_v therefore_o not_o afflict_v at_o all_o for_o indeed_o they_o be_v afflict_v with_o grace_n as_o you_o know_v the_o superfluous_a branch_n of_o any_o tree_n hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o the_o other_o branch_n if_o they_o be_v not_o cut_v off_o they_o will_v make_v they_o to_o wither_v and_o die_v thus_o it_o be_v with_o wicked_a man_n because_o they_o be_v not_o afflict_v they_o begin_v to_o wither_v and_o grow_v cold_a unto_o good_a the_o body_n do_v not_o so_o much_o wither_v with_o age_n as_o the_o inward_a man_n do_v by_o these_o lust_n theybreed_a a_o consumption_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o will_v not_o be_v recover_v 4._o respect_n again_o though_o we_o see_v they_o not_o afflict_v respect_n yet_o they_o have_v many_o affliction_n which_o we_o know_v not_o even_o as_o the_o godly_a have_v many_o inward_a joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o wicked_a man_n never_o feel_v so_o wicked_a man_n have_v many_o strong_a fear_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o many_o sudden_a flash_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o hell_n in_o their_o soul_n much_o hollowness_n in_o their_o heart_n much_o sorrow_n mingle_v with_o their_o carnal_a joy_n and_o often_o affright_v with_o the_o jaw_n of_o death_n and_o arrest_v with_o horror_n of_o conscience_n though_o outward_o they_o seem_v to_o the_o world_n to_o be_v the_o joyful_a and_o happy_a man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v the_o most_o miserable_a and_o sorrowful_a man_n in_o the_o world_n for_o as_o the_o inward_a joy_n be_v far_o great_a than_o the_o outward_a joy_n so_o the_o inward_a sorrow_n be_v far_o great_a than_o the_o outward_a sorrow_n alone_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o point_n prove_v the_o use_n of_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o not_o to_o delude_v use_v ourselves_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o affliction_n in_o affliction_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o conclude_v because_o with_o thyself_o therefore_o how_o ill_o once_o thou_o think_v that_o sin_n and_o see_v thy_o own_o judgement_n be_v blind_v help_v thyself_o with_o other_o holy_a man_n judgement_n concern_v that_o sin_n 2._o labour_v to_o abstain_v from_o the_o act_n of_o that_o sin_n and_o so_o will_v light_v come_v in_o again_o by_o a_o little_a and_o a_o little_a and_o then_o thou_o will_v see_v the_o when_o the_o commodity_n cease_v that_o also_o cease_v yea_o and_o often_o turn_v to_o hatred_n as_o ammon_n love_n to_o thamar_n do_v this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o join_v with_o man_n to_o do_v evil_a it_o be_v better_a to_o use_v join_v to_o their_o conscience_n in_o do_v well_o for_o their_o conscience_n will_v continue_v then_o to_o their_o lust_n for_o they_o will_v end_v and_o then_o their_o love_n to_o you_o will_v end_v also_o hence_o it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o proverb_n that_o he_o that_o reprove_v shall_v find_v more_o favour_n in_o the_o end_n than_o this_o horror_n be_v mingle_v with_o faith_n comfort_n and_o the_o assurance_n of_o god_n favour_n so_o god_n child_n may_v have_v such_o sorrow_n and_o be_v so_o drunken_a with_o wormwood_n that_o it_o may_v make_v they_o not_o to_o know_v what_o to_o do_v yet_o in_o all_o this_o grief_n the_o fire_n of_o god_n love_n be_v not_o quite_o extinguish_v but_o there_o be_v some_o spark_n thereof_o with_o grief_n as_o it_o be_v with_o joy_n there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o all_o joy_n 1._o there_o be_v a_o good_a thing_n 2._o there_o be_v the_o conjunction_n of_o that_o good_a thing_n to_o we_o 3._o a_o reflect_v knowledge_n thereof_o so_o also_o in_o grief_n there_o be_v threething_n 1._o there_o be_v a_o bad_a thing_n 2._o the_o conjunction_n of_o that_o to_o we_o 3._o the_o reflect_v of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o we_o know_v the_o hurt_n that_o come_v to_o we_o thereby_o when_o a_o man_n feel_v and_o see_v and_o know_v his_o sin_n then_o be_v it_o unsupportable_a and_o the_o reason_n thereof_o be_v because_o that_o then_o a_o man_n spirit_n be_v wound_v and_o can_v bear_v itself_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o point_n be_v these_o three_o first_o because_o that_o sin_n and_o a_o little_a comfort_n remain_v that_o will_v serve_v to_o hold_v the_o head_n above_o the_o water_n but_o if_o all_o comfort_n be_v go_v it_o then_o present_o sink_v the_o proper_a object_n of_o fear_n and_o grief_n be_v the_o absence_n of_o good_a and_o prelence_n of_o evil_a and_o both_o they_o come_v by_o the_o privation_n of_o god_n presence_n the_o three_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o conscience_n itself_o when_o it_o be_v awaken_v because_o that_o reas._n then_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o least_o sin_n for_o every_o faculty_n as_o it_o be_v large_a so_o it_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o joy_n and_o grief_n therefore_o man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o joy_n and_o grief_n than_o the_o bruit_n beast_n and_o in_o man_n the_o soul_n be_v more_o capable_a than_o the_o body_n and_o in_o the_o soul_n conscience_n of_o all_o other_o part_n most_o capable_a and_o as_o the_o conscience_n be_v capable_a of_o the_o great_a grief_n so_o also_o of_o the_o great_a comfort_n it_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n which_o pass_v all_o understanding_n and_o sure_o this_o horror_n of_o conscience_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o spark_n of_o hell_n fire_n which_o the_o heathen_a have_v some_o inkling_n of_o when_o they_o say_v they_o be_v exagitated_a with_o the_o fury_n see_v then_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v thus_o insuppartable_a this_o shall_v teach_v we_o in_o all_o thing_n especial_o 1_o to_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o to_o labour_v to_o be_v free_a from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n if_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n then_o shall_v the_o whole_a stream_n of_o our_o endeavour_n be_v to_o take_v heed_n thereof_o by_o labour_v for_o to_o keep_v a_o pure_a which_o if_o man_n will_v but_o do_v they_o will_v spend_v more_o time_n about_o it_o then_o they_o d_o you_o for_o now_o these_o thing_n be_v do_v but_o by_o the_o bye_n and_o have_v not_o that_o tithe_n of_o the_o time_n spend_v about_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v which_o we_o spend_v about_o other_o thing_n but_o let_v such_o know_v that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o folly_n to_o go_v about_o that_o work_n with_o a_o finger_n which_o require_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n when_o this_o work_n of_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n do_v require_v the_o whole_a strength_n of_o a_o man_n be_v hot_a and_o soft_a and_o pliable_a and_o this_o change_n be_v throughout_o in_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v iron_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a he_o mingle_v and_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v if_o christ_n be_v in_o and_o attend_v upon_o it_o most_o when_o that_o cross_v holiness_n but_o you_o will_v not_o again_o cross_v it_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o common_a spirit_n without_o life_n second_o you_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v body_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o have_v it_o not_o in_o a_o feel_a manner_n the_o 2._o sanctify_a spirit_n work_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o taste_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n then_o holy_a great_a sin_n give_v once_o consent_n and_o in_o time_n it_o will_v be_v a_o reign_a sin_n and_o when_o it_o be_v thus_o than_o it_o turn_v the_o soul_n into_o evil_n set_v it_o on_o a_o rage_n be_v humble_a and_o that_o you_o may_v do_v this_o you_o must_v do_v these_o thing_n first_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v some_o sense_n of_o holiness_n that_o be_v you_o must_v get_v the_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n for_o except_v a_o man_n get_v the_o spirit_n he_o will_v not_o be_v humble_v but_o when_o there_o be_v holiness_n breed_v in_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o will_v see_v sin_n to_o be_v humble_a he_o will_v see_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o place_n take_v any_o heavy_a thing_n especial_o water_n and_o in_o its_o place_n it_o be_v not_o heavy_a but_o let_v it_o be_v remove_v out_o of_o its_o place_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n even_o so_o will_v sin_n be_v unto_o you_o when_o you_o have_v once_o get_v the_o spirit_n you_o will_v then_o see_v sin_n a_o case_n as_o they_o be_v in_o lest_o they_o shall_v be_v humble_v which_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o they_o will_v but_o let_v the_o gospel_n have_v his_o full_a force_n at_o their_o conscience_n it_o will_v work_v this_o effect_n to_o humble_v they_o but_o i_o say_v it_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o persuade_v man_n to_o see_v sin_n as_o present_v and_o a_o hard_a matter_n to_o persuade_v man_n to_o be_v humble_a and_o consequent_o a_o difficult_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o make_v they_o to_o bear_v this_o blow_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o to_o persuade_v they_o that_o humiliation_n be_v unto_o poison_n which_o yet_o cause_v other_o tree_n to_o be_v fruitful_a such_o be_v unregenerate_a man_n continue_v in_o their_o old_a sin_n without_o repentance_n those_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o be_v perform_v by_o they_o be_v turn_v into_o poison_n unto_o they_o though_o be_v perform_v by_o a_o holy_a man_n they_o be_v as_o a_o sweet_a odor_n that_o make_v he_o more_o perform_v without_o the_o spirit_n though_o they_o may_v carry_v a_o scent_n and_o smell_v well_o yet_o they_o hurt_v the_o soul_n because_o they_o make_v you_o to_o rest_v only_o in_o the_o outward_a action_n but_o if_o you_o will_v do_v good_a and_o have_v your_o action_n acceptable_a unto_o god_n then_o labour_v to_o get_v regenerate_v heart_n because_o otherwise_o you_o will_v not_o please_v god_n jehu_n perform_v a_o good_a action_n but_o yet_o he_o be_v brand_v for_o it_o if_o the_o end_n be_v not_o good_a the_o action_n be_v not_o good_a to_o you_o and_o therefore_o let_v no_o man_n rest_n in_o the_o outward_a action_n but_o remember_v what_o the_o lord_n account_v of_o the_o action_n of_o wicked_a man_n he_o that_o kill_v 3._o a_o ox_n be_v as_o if_o he_o slay_v a_o man_n he_o christ_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o christian_n have_v this_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a turbulent_a sorrow_n that_o break_v the_o heart_n answ._n and_o mollify_v and_o soften_v it_o but_o there_o be_v another_o sorrow_n which_o i_o call_v a_o temper_a sorrow_n and_o that_o sorrow_n have_v in_o it_o both_o a_o sight_n of_o hell_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o heaven_n a_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o sight_n of_o grace_n in_o christ_n which_o far_o exceed_v this_o sorrow_n for_o as_o it_o be_v with_o joy_n the_o great_a joy_n be_v not_o express_v by_o laughter_n for_o that_o be_v the_o great_a joy_n that_o be_v the_o joy_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n so_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a grief_n that_o be_v express_v by_o tear_n and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o the_o great_a fire_n that_o make_v the_o most_o crackle_v and_o noise_n nor_o that_o the_o deep_a water_n that_o make_v the_o most_o roar_a so_o be_v it_o not_o the_o great_a grief_n or_o sorrow_n that_o express_v itself_o by_o this_o turbulent_a passion_n of_o the_o mind_n but_o the_o great_a grief_n be_v nothing_o when_o a_o sinner_n apprehend_v sin_n within_o and_o see_v it_o in_o its_o own_o colour_n than_o it_o humble_v he_o second_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v degree_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o this_o arise_v from_o the_o nature_n answ._n of_o man_n some_o man_n be_v of_o a_o more_o hardy_a nature_n than_o other_o and_o again_o some_o be_v of_o a_o more_o soft_a and_o tender_a disposition_n for_o example_n some_o man_n flesh_n will_v heal_v soon_o than_o other_o though_o the_o wound_n be_v the_o same_o so_o some_o have_v more_o soft_a and_o gentle_a nature_n and_o therefore_o soon_o wrought_v upon_o again_o some_o god_n other_o that_o see_v he_o not_o thus_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o discourage_v though_o thou_o find_v that_o thy_o humiliation_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o other_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v the_o same_o and_o the_o apprehension_n the_o same_o but_o christ_n the_o condition_n of_o thy_o peace_n be_v apprehend_v near_o thou_o by_o faith_n and_o this_o qualify_v the_o tempest_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o christ_n be_v not_o see_v of_o the_o other_o as_o a_o saviour_n and_o this_o make_v the_o difference_n as_o for_o example_n there_o be_v two_o man_n set_v upon_o by_o robber_n the_o one_o see_v no_o help_n or_o no_o way_n to_o escape_v and_o hereupon_o he_o be_v marvellous_o afflict_a and_o astonish_v because_o he_o find_v himfelfe_n unable_a to_o resist_v or_o make_v his_o party_n good_a with_o they_o but_o the_o other_o man_n beset_v with_o robber_n see_v another_o near_a hand_n that_o will_v stand_v close_o to_o he_o and_o thereupon_o he_o trust_v hope_n and_o depend_v upon_o the_o man_n to_o help_v he_o this_o man_n see_v the_o danger_n aswell_o as_o the_o other_o and_o fear_n but_o his_o fear_n be_v not_o a_o distract_a fear_n neither_o be_v it_o so_o great_a as_o the_o other_o because_o it_o be_v mix_v with_o joy_n and_o confidence_n in_o that_o he_o see_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v yet_o he_o fear_v the_o same_o that_o the_o other_o fear_n and_o be_v true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a unto_o he_o that_o save_v he_o from_o the_o danger_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o many_o christian_n they_o that_o have_v a_o turbulent_a kind_n of_o sorrow_n see_v death_n and_o hell_n and_o sin_n and_o damnation_n but_o he_o see_v christ_n so_o far_o off_o that_o he_o can_v depend_v upon_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o hence_o for_o the_o present_a be_v marvellous_o cast_v down_o but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o mix_a sorrow_n speak_v of_o see_v the_o same_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n but_o withal_o he_o apprehend_v christ_n as_o a_o helper_n as_o a_o saviour_n and_o here_o upon_o be_v not_o so_o much_o deject_v and_o cast_v do_v wne_z as_o the_o other_z and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o be_v as_o true_o humble_v and_o thankful_a as_o the_o other_o therefore_o labour_v to_o get_v a_o heart_n sensible_a of_o sin_n that_o be_v labour_v to_o know_v sin_n and_o the_o evil_a of_o it_o and_o withal_o labour_v to_o see_v christ_n or_o else_o you_o will_v be_v have_v no_o comfort_n in_o your_o knowledge_n labour_v therefore_o to_o get_v the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n
