turn_v himself_o unto_o god_n but_o he_o seem_v to_o hide_v his_o face_n from_o he_o and_o therefore_o pray_v so_o instant_o that_o god_n will_v not_o cast_v he_o away_o be_v his_o servant_n in_o displeasure_n yet_o david_n have_v the_o true_a fear_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n although_o he_o be_v a_o little_a shake_v with_o doubt_v for_o the_o absence_n of_o god_n presence_n and_o necessary_a it_o be_v that_o we_o shall_v sometime_o feel_v the_o want_n of_o god_n presence_n with_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o too_o much_o presume_v upon_o our_o own_o worthiness_n power_n and_o strength_n to_o stand_v firm_a without_o he_o for_o if_o he_o leave_v we_o be_v it_o never_o so_o little_a such_o be_v our_o frailty_n that_o we_o begin_v to_o faint_v and_o our_o spiritual_a strength_n sail_v we_o which_o if_o we_o can_v apprehend_v it_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o we_o be_v not_o altogether_o destitute_a of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n for_o if_o we_o be_v so_o carry_v away_o with_o our_o own_o corruption_n as_o we_o never_o feel_v our_o own_o want_n of_o spiritual_a grace_n we_o have_v no_o grace_n at_o all_o the_o wicked_a and_o such_o as_o sin_n without_o touch_n of_o conscience_n they_o never_o feel_v the_o want_n of_o that_o they_o never_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n &_o therefore_o run_v on_o still_o in_o their_o impiety_n follow_v every_o kind_n of_o carnal_a destres_z with_o greediness_n it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o they_o that_o god_n have_v choose_v and_o enlighten_v for_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o the_o least_o of_o god_n absence_n if_o but_o for_o a_o moment_n for_o they_o be_v seldom_o idle_a in_o one_o kind_n of_o holy_a duty_n or_o another_o they_o either_o meditate_v on_o the_o word_n and_o work_n of_o god_n they_o pray_v or_o offer_v the_o sacrifice_n of_o thanks_n to_o god_n and_o when_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o a_o dulness_n to_o pray_v or_o ignorance_n how_o to_o pray_v they_o present_o suspect_v that_o they_o have_v deserve_v by_o some_o mean_n that_o god_n have_v leave_v they_o to_o themselves_o who_o of_o their_o own_o power_n without_o the_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v think_v a_o good_a thought_n much_o less_o faithful_o and_o seruent_o pray_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o feel_v the_o grief_n of_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o can_v be_v comfort_v by_o the_o exercise_n of_o these_o holy_a duty_n find_v the_o fault_n to_o be_v in_o themselves_o and_o that_o god_n for_o some_o sin_n commit_v or_o some_o good_a duty_n omit_v be_v angry_a with_o they_o and_o therefore_o as_o david_n do_v here_o they_o cry_v out_o unto_o god_n o_o hide_v not_o thy_o face_n from_o i_o nor_o cast_v thy_o servant_n away_o in_o displeasure_n so_o fearful_a be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n to_o lose_v the_o benefit_n of_o his_o presence_n as_o they_o think_v nothing_o so_o irksome_a unto_o they_o as_o his_o absence_n and_o therefore_o have_v always_o a_o kind_n of_o holy_a jealousy_n that_o the_o least_o sin_n they_o do_v commit_v will_v cause_v the_o lord_n to_o hide_v himself_o from_o they_o therefore_o when_o david_n consider_v his_o infirmity_n he_o can_v confess_v and_o say_v wicked_a serve_v he_o nay_o that_o seek_v he_o not_o with_o a_o pure_a heart_n and_o that_o continual_o for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o sin_n and_o serve_v he_o by_o turn_n as_o if_o he_o allow_v we_o a_o time_n for_o ourselves_o to_o take_v our_o carnal_a pleasure_n &_o delight_n in_o and_o a_o time_n again_o for_o he_o to_o have_v our_o time_n wherein_o we_o can_v sin_v either_o be_v glut_v with_o sin_n or_o unable_a to_o sin_n how_o can_v he_o but_o hide_v his_o face_n from_o such_o how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o he_o must_v cast_v away_o such_o in_o his_o displeasure_n david_n that_o thus_o cry_v out_o that_o god_n have_v hide_v his_o face_n from_o he_o never_o take_v such_o profane_a liberty_n and_o yet_o through_o his_o humane_a frailty_n fall_v and_o that_o grievous_o but_o he_o lay_v not_o in_o it_o as_o the_o reprobate_n do_v he_o examine_v his_o heart_n and_o find_v it_o corrupt_v and_o fault_v it_o with_o the_o tear_n of_o repentance_n thou_o have_v feed_v i_o with_o the_o and_o though_o he_o seem_v to_o cast_v we_o off_o in_o displeasure_n it_o be_v but_o as_o a_o love_a father_n that_o dissemble_v extreme_a anger_n to_o his_o child_n that_o have_v offend_v he_o and_o make_v a_o show_n as_o if_o he_o will_v utter_o cast_v he_o off_o determine_v yet_o nothing_o less_o so_o though_o god_n the_o most_o love_a father_n to_o his_o child_n seem_v often_o angry_a with_o we_o as_o he_o seem_v to_o be_v with_o david_n it_o be_v more_o in_o show_n than_o in_o deed_n which_o we_o may_v not_o
slight_o regard_v for_o so_o we_o may_v indeed_o turn_v his_o fatherly_a displeasure_n into_o just_a revenge_n let_v we_o observe_v in_o wisdom_n the_o lord_n way_n how_o indeed_o he_o never_o wink_v long_o at_o our_o least_o sin_n for_o many_o little_a sin_n make_v a_o great_a cry_n and_o when_o god_n hear_v their_o clamour_n he_o turn_v away_o his_o face_n as_o a_o thing_n loathsome_a unto_o he_o as_o he_o do_v from_o david_n for_o a_o time_n who_o feel_v it_o run_v cry_v again_o unto_o god_n o_o hide_v not_o thy_o face_n from_o i_o o_o lord_n nor_o cast_v thy_o servant_n away_o in_o without_o his_o desert_n he_o will_v not_o cast_v he_o off_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o humane_a frailty_n incident_a to_o all_o man_n even_o to_o y_z e_z best_o man_n but_o will_v rather_o renew_v maintain_v and_o confirm_v those_o divine_a grace_n which_o it_o have_v please_v god_n before_o to_o plant_v in_o he_o and_o so_o will_v return_v again_o unto_o he_o in_o love_n and_o turn_v his_o man_n as_o well_o as_o one_o and_o that_o at_o a_o instant_n but_o we_o may_v not_o limit_v the_o holy_a one_o of_o israel_n for_o he_o know_v the_o time_n and_o season_n fit_a for_o every_o of_o his_o intention_n shall_v we_o think_v that_o david_n in_o his_o extreme_a danger_n do_v not_o pray_v for_o delivery_n yet_o though_o his_o say_v be_v great_a he_o be_v not_o present_o set_v free_a though_o he_o cry_v out_o how_o long_a lord_n how_o long_o will_v thou_o absent_v thyself_o for_o ever_o joseph_n likewise_o in_o his_o captivity_n and_o imprisonment_n shall_v we_o think_v that_o advance_v they_o both_o we_o may_v not_o therefore_o murmur_v or_o repine_v at_o god_n correction_n though_o they_o continue_v in_o our_o opinion_n long_o it_o be_v not_o only_o that_o it_o be_v unsavoury_a to_o our_o carnal_a mind_n but_o for_o want_v of_o faith_n for_o where_o faith_n be_v strong_a it_o produce_v hope_n and_o in_o hope_n we_o wait_v with_o patience_n and_o we_o find_v by_o experience_n that_o hope_n and_o patience_n shall_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a then_o whosoever_o be_v afflict_v let_v they_o cry_v unto_o god_n to_o have_v mercy_n upon_o they_o and_o that_o in_o a_o lively_a faith_n and_o he_o will_v at_o least_o case_n they_o if_o he_o do_v not_o altogether_o deliver_v they_o he_o will_v keep_v his_o own_o under_o his_o own_o hand_n and_o not_o suffer_v they_o and_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o any_o impiety_n as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o holy_a david_n himself_o when_o god_n permit_v he_o but_o to_o have_v a_o little_a liberty_n a_o small_a breathe_a time_n from_o his_o trouble_n into_o what_o sin_n do_v he_o run_v yet_o a_o man_n choose_v of_o god_n if_o he_o so_o far_o forget_v himself_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o have_v not_o his_o spiritual_a gift_n refrain_v ourselves_o from_o offend_a god_n more_o gross_o in_o our_o security_n trouble_n and_o affliction_n fall_v not_o upon_o we_o without_o god_n providence_n though_o satan_n work_v what_o he_o can_v to_o trouble_v we_o as_o appear_v in_o his_o try_v of_o job_n to_o draw_v we_o from_o god_n but_o howsoeruer_n he_o aim_v to_o make_v we_o distrust_n god_n by_o his_o tentation_n and_o afflict_v we_o the_o more_o do_v the_o child_n of_o god_n clean_o unto_o god_n for_o succour_n and_o cry_v unto_o he_o for_o mercy_n and_o that_o which_o satan_n intend_v to_o be_v for_o our_o hurt_n god_n work_v it_o for_o our_o good_a for_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o the_o good_a of_o they_o that_o love_n god_n and_o be_v call_v of_o his_o purpose_n namely_o his_o own_o elect_a who_o as_o they_o be_v true_o god_n own_o so_o they_o depend_v upon_o he_o alone_o and_o know_v that_o what_o cross_n or_o affliction_n soever_o befall_v they_o it_o come_v from_o none_o but_o from_o their_o own_o love_a father_n for_o their_o especial_a good_a to_o prevent_v great_a danger_n as_o the_o holy_a apostle_n paul_n himself_o confess_v y_z t_o lest_o he_o shall_v be_v exalt_v out_o of_o restrain_v from_o what_o that_o sin_n desire_v as_o for_o example_n take_v game_n from_o the_o covetous_a man_n he_o will_v become_v even_o cut_v of_o his_o wit_n bar_v the_o drunkard_n of_o his_o liquor_n and_o he_o will_v rage_v like_o a_o shéebeare_n rob_v of_o her_o whelp_n prevent_v the_o lascivious_a man_n of_o his_o harlot_n he_o will_v swagger_v swear_v and_o adventure_v his_o life_n to_o have_v they_o and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n if_o therefore_o a_o man_n fall_v into_o any_o of_o these_o dominant_a sin_n and_o live_v in_o it_o what_o a_o advantage_n be_v it_o unto_o his_o enemy_n it_o be_v a_o double_a advantage_n first_o it_o make_v he_o scandalous_a in_o the_o world_n who_o good_a opinion_n with_o the_o virtuous_a and_o religious_a he_o lose_v it_o offend_v god_n who_o hand_n be_v always_o over_o the_o righteous_a to_o defend_v they_o &_o against_o the_o wicked_a to_o confound_v they_o how_o sottish_a then_o be_v these_o man_n that_o will_v give_v entertainment_n at_o the_o first_o to_o such_o servant_n as_o at_o last_o shall_v become_v their_o master_n sin_n in_o the_o beginning_n be_v weak_a and_o with_o ease_n may_v be_v subdue_v but_o when_o it_o have_v be_v cherish_v and_o nurse_v up_o awhile_o in_o our_o breast_n as_o belove_v and_o feed_v as_o it_o will_v require_v it_o beconune_v predominant_a face_v as_o it_o be_v a_o man_n and_o as_o if_o it_o shall_v say_v i_o have_v thus_o long_o overrule_v thou_o i_o will_v yet_o make_v thou_o my_o slave_n o_o fearful_a estate_n yet_o not_o a_o few_o live_v in_o this_o miserable_a servility_n and_o do_v not_o that_o enemy_n satan_n triumph_v to_o observe_v his_o vassal_n thus_o subject_v and_o do_v he_o not_o stir_v up_o enemy_n to_o upbraid_v they_o some_o to_o mock_v and_o scorn_v they_o some_o to_o reproach_n and_o revile_v they_o and_o final_o do_v he_o not_o laugh_v at_o their_o destruction_n have_v not_o holy_a david_n they_o good_a cause_n to_o be_v afraid_a to_o right_a path_n because_o of_o my_o enemy_n where_o it_o appear_v that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o know_v the_o way_n of_o god_n unless_o we_o walk_v in_o it_o and_o what_o power_n have_v we_o of_o ourselves_o to_o walk_v aright_o unless_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n lead_v we_o we_o may_v think_v we_o be_v right_a when_o we_o be_v clean_o out_o of_o the_o way_n as_o many_o deceive_v silly_a soul_n do_v that_o think_v themselves_o right_a and_o other_o out_o of_o the_o way_n when_o indeed_o they_o walk_v in_o darkness_n and_o have_v no_o light_n at_o all_o enemy_n be_v always_o envious_a against_o the_o prosperity_n &_o good_a that_o the_o godly_a receive_v and_o rejoice_v when_o any_o disgrace_n misery_n or_o misfortune_n befall_v they_o when_o my_o foot_n slip_v say_v david_n my_o wicked_a and_o then_o again_o to_o move_v and_o instigate_v the_o wicked_a to_o reproach_v we_o for_o our_o sin_n so_o that_o we_o must_v not_o look_v to_o live_v here_o secure_o even_o in_o our_o seem_n most_o quiet_a estate_n for_o when_o we_o think_v of_o none_o and_o deserve_v least_o disgrace_n satan_n will_v raise_v up_o one_o rail_a and_o revile_v shemei_n some_o one_o traitorous_a judas_n or_o one_o treacherous_a achithophel_n or_o another_o to_o trouble_v us._n and_o if_o we_o have_v commit_v any_o know_a sin_n be_v it_o never_o so_o small_a whether_o in_o our_o place_n conversation_n or_o profession_n we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o hear_v it_o let_v we_o live_v never_o so_o wary_o never_o so_o civil_o never_o so_o sincere_o we_o have_v enemy_n enough_o to_o espy_v out_o our_o secret_a action_n to_o hear_v our_o most_o private_a speech_n for_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a little_a sin_n seem_v great_a and_o be_v soon_o discover_v and_o great_a sin_n in_o the_o wicked_a seem_v no_o sin_n therefore_o have_v the_o wicked_a few_o enemy_n who_o they_o fear_v to_o see_v their_o way_n but_o the_o godly_a many_o it_o be_v no_o disgrace_n to_o a_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v wicked_a it_o be_v his_o profession_n as_o it_o be_v no_o blemish_n to_o the_o beauty_n of_o a_o aethiopian_a to_o be_v black_a it_o be_v his_o natural_a
paul_n hope_n and_o patience_n aim_v to_o heavenly_a not_o to_o earthly_a accomplishment_n not_o look_v for_o the_o event_n of_o his_o hope_n in_o this_o life_n how_o then_o may_v his_o hope_n of_o heavenly_a glory_n and_o david_n hope_n to_o be_v defend_v and_o reléeve_v here_o in_o the_o land_n of_o the_o live_a concur_v they_o may_v well_o stand_v together_o even_o as_o christ_n by_o heal_v of_o corporal_a disease_n make_v man_n heavenly_a mind_v and_o clean_o by_o forgive_a their_o sin_n so_o david_n pray_v not_o so_o simple_o for_o corporal_a delivery_n but_o he_o pray_v also_o for_o the_o light_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o he_o may_v dwell_v in_o the_o temple_n of_o god_n for_o mercy_n and_o the_o like_a and_o although_o paul_n seem_v by_o his_o word_n to_o hope_v only_o for_o heavenly_a glory_n necessary_n for_o this_o life_n be_v necessary_o include_v he_o that_o due_o and_o true_o pray_v for_o heavenly_a can_v be_v frustrate_a of_o earthly_a and_o he_o that_o pray_v faithful_o for_o earthly_a can_v but_o therewith_o join_v heavenly_a blessing_n for_o true_a and_o sincere_a hope_n include_v both_o he_o therefore_o that_o through_o faith_n in_o christ_n do_v hope_n in_o the_o lord_n and_o become_v strong_a in_o he_o he_o will_v comfort_v his_o heart_n with_o the_o supply_n both_o of_o heavenly_a and_o earthly_a blessing_n as_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o pray_v unto_o god_n for_o corporal_a necessary_n so_o be_v we_o bind_v to_o hope_n and_o wait_v for_o they_o without_o hope_n of_o victory_n david_n will_v never_o have_v enter_v the_o combat_n with_o goliath_n we_o must_v therefore_o hope_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v strong_a trust_v in_o god_n and_o our_o heart_n shall_v be_v comfort_v we_o may_v not_o look_v back_o or_o about_o we_o for_o help_v our_o help_n come_v from_o heaven_n therefore_o must_v we_o not_o hope_n and_o hope_v a_o hope_n partly_o from_o above_o and_o partly_o from_o beneath_o but_o our_o hope_n must_v be_v in_o god_n alone_o yet_o not_o to_o contemn_v or_o despise_v the_o inferior_a mean_n that_o god_n use_v here_o below_o as_o his_o instrument_n for_o our_o good_a in_o who_o we_o may_v have_v a_o kind_n confidence_n must_v be_v in_o god_n alone_o what_o god_n have_v promise_v in_o his_o word_n he_o will_v assure_o perform_v to_o they_o that_o true_o believe_v and_o that_o do_v david_n find_v even_o he_o take_v courage_n he_o hope_v in_o the_o lord_n he_o be_v strong_a in_o faith_n and_o the_o lord_n do_v comfort_v his_o heart_n he_o seek_v not_o as_o the_o wicked_a do_v sinister_a and_o forbid_a mean_n to_o be_v deliver_v for_o when_o saul_n his_o mortal_a enemy_n pursue_v he_o with_o deadly_a malice_n to_o take_v away_o his_o life_n yet_o when_o saul_n fall_v into_o his_o hand_n and_o have_v he_o twice_o in_o his_o power_n and_o may_v have_v end_v the_o quarrel_n and_o free_v himself_o of_o danger_n he_o will_v not_o do_v it_o no_o though_o he_o may_v have_v make_v present_a way_n for_o he_o so_o shall_v we_o not_o need_v to_o be_v afraid_a of_o enemy_n to_o faint_v in_o affliction_n but_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v comfort_n in_o all_o our_o trouble_n solomon_n say_v that_o hope_v that_o be_v defer_v be_v the_o faint_a of_o the_o heart_n but_o that_o be_v but_o to_o the_o fainthearted_a for_o if_o we_o wait_v not_o it_o be_v no_o hope_n but_o if_o we_o abide_v with_o strong_a by_o the_o effect_n of_o god_n goodness_n former_o hope_v for_o and_o have_v which_o saint_n paul_n affirm_v encourage_v the_o corinthian_n as_o david_n do_v himself_o and_o other_o to_o hope_v to_o be_v strong_a to_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o the_o hope_n that_o be_v set_v before_o we_o which_o hope_v we_o have_v as_o a_o anchor_n of_o the_o soul_n sure_a and_o steadfast_a and_o this_o be_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o david_n mean_v even_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n whereby_o we_o take_v hold_v of_o the_o assure_a performance_n of_o his_o promise_n not_o only_o of_o temporal_a and_o corporal_a but_o of_o spiritual_a and_o celestial_a blessing_n and_o the_o patient_a wait_a for_o they_o be_v our_o hope_n how_o then_o can_v it_o be_v that_o god_n who_o have_v promise_v unto_o the_o faithful_a the_o life_n to_o come_v that_o with_o patience_n in_o hope_n wait_v for_o it_o under_o the_o cross_n shall_v not_o consider_v &_o regard_v their_o danger_n trouble_n affliction_n even_o in_o this_o life_n for_o if_o he_o have_v give_v his_o son_n to_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n how_o shall_v he_o not_o with_o he_o give_v we_o all_o thing_n to_o enjoy_v though_o we_o must_v wait_v his_o time_n he_o be_v not_o slack_a as_o some_o man_n count_v slackness_n but_o be_v always_o ready_a and_o at_o hand_n he_o that_o have_v promise_v
