of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n faith_n but_o the_o inward_a practice_n of_o faith_n so_o to_o convert_v unto_o the_o lord_n so_o to_o pray_v so_o to_o presume_v of_o god_n favour_n that_o thy_o prayer_n shall_v please_v he_o and_o that_o he_o will_v hear_v the_o same_o that_o be_v a_o hard_a matter_n in_o deed_n for_o fearful_a conscience_n many_o time_n feel_v not_o this_o certainty_n and_o the_o sense_n &_o feeling_n of_o their_o own_o unworthiness_n but_o here_o thou_o must_v not_o regard_v what_o thou_o be_v but_o rather_o look_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n the_o necessity_n of_o prayer_n the_o danger_n that_o follow_v the_o neglect_v thereof_o and_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o the_o which_o thou_o ought_v to_o pray_v set_v these_o thing_n before_o thine_o eye_n albeit_o which_o he_o have_v in_o his_o own_o strength_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o god_n suffer_v his_o people_n so_o to_o be_v exercise_v for_o it_o be_v not_o hear_v read_v talk_a or_o teach_v nor_o speculation_n only_o which_o make_v a_o christian_a man_n but_o practice_n be_v that_o which_o special_o be_v require_v in_o a_o true_a christian_a that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o cross_n to_o pluck_v down_o the_o flesh_n and_o bring_v it_o to_o nothing_o that_o man_n despair_v of_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o see_v no_o succour_n in_o himself_o shall_v resign_v himself_o whole_o unto_o the_o lord_n look_v with_o patience_n and_o hope_n for_o help_v at_o his_o hand_n for_o this_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n neither_o must_v we_o imagine_v to_o ourselves_o any_o other_o god_n than_o such_o a_o one_o as_o will_v help_v the_o afflict_a and_o oppress_v with_o desperation_n and_o other_o calamity_n to_o know_v this_o doctrine_n be_v one_o piece_n of_o the_o victory_n for_o they_o that_o know_v it_o not_o when_o tentation_n assail_v they_o either_o do_v despair_n or_o seek_v other_o help_n let_v we_o learn_v then_o out_o of_o this_o psalm_n that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o exercise_v his_o saint_n with_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n who_o suffer_v great_a flood_n of_o water_n to_o run_v over_o their_o head_n who_o also_o permit_v they_o to_o fall_v into_o the_o snare_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o try_v every_o way_n not_o to_o destroy_v they_o but_o to_o show_v they_o what_o they_o be_v of_o themselves_o &_o so_o to_o teach_v they_o to_o trust_v in_o his_o save_a health_n but_o the_o flesh_n look_v to_o the_o power_n and_o multitude_n of_o the_o adversary_n and_o her_o own_o infirmity_n but_o to_o look_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o hope_v for_o his_o help_n and_o succour_n it_o be_v not_o able_a wherefore_o this_o be_v a_o necessary_a conclusion_n our_o help_n be_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v a_o short_a sentence_n but_o it_o set_v forth_o most_o worthy_a doctrine_n and_o consolation_n whereof_o â–ª_o special_o in_o these_o latter_a day_n we_o have_v great_a need_n see_v the_o pope_n together_o with_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o prince_n &_o ruler_n of_o the_o world_n so_o cruel_o do_v persecute_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o respect_n of_o these_o huge_a mountain_n what_o be_v we_o small_a molehill_n yea_o though_o there_o be_v no_o force_n nor_o power_n of_o man_n for_o we_o to_o fear_v how_o be_v we_o able_a to_o stand_v against_o not_o only_o so_o many_o devil_n but_o even_o the_o very_a gate_n of_o hell_n also_o and_o yet_o this_o experience_n we_o have_v of_o the_o great_a mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n that_o when_o we_o be_v even_o in_o their_o hand_n and_o never_o so_o much_o oppress_v yet_o be_v we_o not_o forsake_v but_o be_v safe_a through_o our_o confidence_n and_o trust_n in_o his_o help_n but_o to_o this_o wisdom_n it_o be_v unpossible_a for_o we_o to_o attain_v without_o continual_a affliction_n affliction_n whereby_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o confidence_n of_o all_o worldly_a succour_n shall_v be_v beat_v down_o for_o vexation_n and_o trouble_n bring_v understanding_n as_o isaiah_n say_v whereby_o we_o be_v compel_v to_o cry_v help_v lord_n for_o else_o we_o perish_v so_o in_o the_o last_o hour_n when_o death_n approach_v there_o righteousness_n or_o unrighteousness_n but_o if_o thou_o will_v mark_v our_o iniquity_n if_o thou_o in_o judgement_n will_v demand_v whether_o we_o be_v righteous_a then_o must_v we_o needs_o perish_v wherefore_o we_o appeal_v from_o thy_o judgement_n unto_o the_o throne_n of_o thy_o mercy_n if_o we_o have_v do_v any_o thing_n well_o it_o be_v thy_o free_a gift_n alone_o look_v upon_o we_o take_v away_o according_a to_o that_o say_n bless_a be_v they_o who_o sin_n be_v forgive_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n than_o be_v that_o heaven_n under_o the_o which_o we_o dwell_v through_o our_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o he_o that_o believe_v shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v but_o shall_v pass_v from_o death_n to_o eternal_a life_n david_n add_v here_o no_o express_a mention_n of_o christ_n and_o yet_o because_o he_o hope_v for_o mercy_n therefore_o he_o look_v straight_o to_o this_o mercy_n seat_n that_o afterward_o shall_v more_o clear_o be_v reveil_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n for_o you_o see_v that_o he_o signify_v no_o less_o but_o if_o god_n shall_v mark_v his_o iniquity_n he_o must_v needs_o despair_v for_o without_o remission_n of_o sin_n or_o knowledge_n of_o grace_n what_o have_v we_o to_o rest_v upon_o what_o safety_n may_v we_o find_v they_o therefore_o that_o put_v not_o their_o trust_n herein_o alone_o that_o by_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n their_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o and_o god_n eye_n close_v that_o he_o will_v not_o see_v their_o sin_n must_v needs_o perish_v for_o this_o only_o do_v the_o scripture_n set_v forth_o that_o our_o life_n rest_v whole_o and_o alone_o in_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o that_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o see_v our_o sin_n but_o in_o mercy_n cover_v they_o and_o will_v not_o remember_v they_o or_o lay_v they_o to_o our_o charge_n so_o that_o we_o must_v acknowledge_v &_o confess_v that_o we_o know_v nothing_o but_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n not_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o now_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n not_o that_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o we_o or_o that_o god_n do_v not_o hate_v the_o same_o but_o because_o god_n say_v and_o promise_v that_o he_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o transgression_n because_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o put_v our_o trust_n in_o he_o this_o shield_n whosoever_o hold_v out_o for_o what_o can_v all_o their_o work_n their_o merit_n their_o righteousness_n do_v see_v david_n say_v if_o thou_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n oh_o lord_n who_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o thy_o sight_n in_o this_o verse_n therefore_o consist_v altogether_o which_o hereafter_o follow_v verse_n 4._o but_o mercy_n be_v with_o thou_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v fear_v this_o mercy_n thou_o that_o we_o may_v see_v how_o that_o this_o doctrine_n be_v found_v upon_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o that_o all_o the_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o man_n can_v have_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o work_n or_o of_o the_o law_n be_v utter_o cut_v of_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n for_o this_o doctrine_n make_v all_o man_n alike_o and_o before_o god_n leave_v no_o difference_n alike_o for_o if_o by_o imputation_n only_o we_o be_v righteous_a it_o follow_v that_o not_o only_o we_o be_v all_o sinner_n but_o that_o also_o there_o be_v no_o differenee_n between_o the_o learned_a &_o unlearned_a the_o wise_a and_o the_o simple_a the_o marry_a and_o unmarried_a the_o prince_n and_o the_o ploughman_n etc_n etc_n for_o this_o difference_n of_o degree_n in_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n avail_v nothing_o but_o this_o only_a avail_v before_o god_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v wherefore_o if_o this_o doctrive_v have_v be_v heretofore_o diligent_o teach_v all_o monkry_n &_o such_o other_o monstrous_a kind_n of_o life_n have_v not_o be_v bring_v into_o the_o church_n which_o the_o foolish_a people_n have_v believe_v to_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o other_o for_o what_o soever_o kind_a of_o life_n a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o we_o all_o that_o we_o have_v need_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n as_o paul_n teach_v in_o the_o act_n where_o he_o show_v that_o god_n suffer_v the_o manner_n of_o our_o father_n 13._o like_v as_o a_o good_a husband_n suffer_v and_o bear_v with_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o wife_n the_o master_n of_o his_o scholar_n the_o prince_n of_o his_o subject_n now_o if_o this_o evil_a life_n have_v need_n of_o such_o discretion_n and_o moderation_n that_o man_n shall_v not_o be_v always_o extreme_a and_o rigorous_a in_o deal_v one_o towards_o a_o other_o how_o much_o more_o need_n have_v we_o that_o god_n shall_v bear_v with_o we_o in_o this_o our_o great_a weakness_n and_o corruption_n if_o god_n shall_v deal_v sharp_o with_o we_o than_o shall_v our_o transgression_n daily_a and_o continual_o move_v he_o to_o mark_v strait_o and_o sharp_o to_o punish_v we_o but_o he_o will_v not_o mark_v our_o iniquity_n this_o he_o require_v that_o we_o believe_v in_o christ_n then_o will_v he_o bear_v with_o we_o then_o will_v he_o wink_v at_o our_o weakness_n and_o pardon_v our_o transgression_n yea_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o christ_n he_o will_v accept_v we_o as_o righteous_a thus_o david_n turn_v himself_o from_o desperation_n to_o a_o assure_a hope_n and_o trust_v in_o god_n mercy_n for_o when_o we_o look_v to_o our_o sin_n it_o can_v not_o be_v but_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v vex_v and_o fall_v to_o desperation_n â–ª_o but_o we_o must_v not_o that_o be_v not_o diligent_a in_o hold_v fast_o this_o knowledge_n of_o mercy_n for_o this_o satan_n seek_v and_o busy_o go_v about_o either_o public_o to_o take_v away_o the_o word_n or_o private_o to_o hinder_v this_o hope_n in_o those_o that_o have_v the_o word_n so_o the_o pope_n have_v the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o he_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v lead_v away_o to_o pilgrimage_n rule_n vow_n superstition_n idolatry_n etc_n etc_n what_o trouble_v we_o have_v have_v with_o sect_n we_o have_v before_o declare_v and_o who_o be_v able_a to_o recite_v the_o tentation_n wherewith_o man_n be_v private_o assail_v &_o tempt_v to_o depart_v from_o the_o word_n to_o strange_a opinion_n which_o reason_n devise_v and_o imagine_v so_o great_a a_o matter_n be_v it_o to_o avoid_v these_o subtle_a sleight_n of_o satan_n david_n say_v therefore_o i_o will_v not_o suffer_v myself_o to_o be_v lead_v from_o the_o word_n but_o in_o the_o word_n i_o will_v trust_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o frame_v my_o faith_n after_o my_o own_o imagination_n but_o after_o the_o word_n there_o be_v then_o a_o double_a tentation_n against_o the_o which_o press_v still_o upon_o the_o enemy_n so_o the_o turk_n although_o he_o have_v have_v many_o overthrow_n yet_o because_o he_o still_o go_v on_o and_o never_o give_v over_o therefore_o he_o prevail_v in_o this_o continuance_n diligence_n &_o travail_n all_o they_o must_v constant_o persevere_v which_o will_v hold_v this_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n &_o righteousness_n and_o here_o david_n set_v forth_o his_o own_o example_n that_o like_o as_o the_o enemy_n have_v his_o continual_a assault_n and_o never_o give_v over_o so_o he_o also_o never_o cease_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n &_o to_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n that_o not_o only_a with_o a_o strong_a &_o a_o valiant_a but_o also_o with_o a_o constant_a faith_n &_o invincible_a hope_n he_o may_v gain_v the_o victory_n us._n wherefore_o we_o must_v learn_v by_o the_o policy_n of_o our_o enemy_n to_o play_v the_o good_a soldier_n for_o he_o be_v never_o weary_a in_o devise_v and_o practise_v all_o the_o mean_n possible_a notwithstanding_o do_v not_o then_o first_o begin_v to_o spring_v up_o but_o the_o old_a enemy_n who_o as_o he_o be_v never_o weary_a so_o lack_v he_o no_o subtlety_n and_o policy_n to_o do_v mischief_n raise_v up_o again_o such_o error_n and_o heresy_n as_o have_v be_v convict_v and_o confound_v long_o ago_o to_o the_o end_n that_o the_o poor_a afflict_a church_n may_v have_v no_o breathe_a time_n for_o we_o see_v what_o swarm_n of_o epicure_n be_v now_o every_o where_o and_o there_o be_v no_o small_a number_n also_o of_o such_o as_o seek_v to_o revive_v the_o heresy_n of_o arius_n this_o continual_a diligence_n and_o importunity_n of_o the_o enemy_n it_o behove_v we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o fall_v not_o into_o security_n for_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o have_v once_o overcome_v but_o one_o battle_n follow_v a_o other_o and_o one_o victory_n a_o other_o this_o earnest_n and_o continual_a travel_n of_o the_o enemy_n we_o do_v not_o only_o see_v in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o church_n but_o we_o have_v experience_n thereof_o also_o in_o ourselves_o and_o in_o our_o own_o private_a exercise_n wherefore_o if_o by_o prayer_n thou_o have_v this_o day_n overcome_v be_v not_o negligent_a and_o secure_a for_o to_o morrow_n he_o will_v come_v again_o more_o strong_o arm_v and_o prepare_v than_o he_o do_v before_o wherefore_o do_v thou_o also_o prepare_v thyself_o to_o a_o new_a battle_n so_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o same_o tentation_n which_o to_o day_n we_o be_v able_a easy_o to_o overcome_v to_o morrow_n shall_v overcome_v we_o and_o give_v we_o the_o overthrow_n a_o christian_a therefore_o must_v be_v ready_o prepare_v not_o only_o with_o strength_n to_o stand_v against_o the_o enemy_n but_o with_o steadfast_a purpose_n also_o our_o child_n or_o our_o friend_n die_v or_o else_o fall_v into_o some_o great_a danger_n it_o be_v a_o minifest_z token_n that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o devil_n be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o death_n
