offering_n for_o the_o people_n iniquity_n no_o marvel_v though_o shift_n and_o excuse_n will_v not_o serve_v nay_o that_o which_o be_v more_o a_o man_n that_o walk_v most_o civil_o and_o can_v be_v charge_v by_o man_n to_o be_v a_o offensive_a liver_n but_o shall_v be_v take_v for_o the_o most_o innocent_a of_o many_o yet_o if_o he_o stand_v upon_o that_o and_o see_v not_o inward_o into_o his_o themselves_o who_o receive_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n as_o his_o messenger_n to_o who_o as_o unto_o mean_a person_n i_o wish_v no_o worse_o than_o this_o that_o both_o they_o may_v enjoy_v such_o receive_v a_o prophet_n in_o the_o name_n of_o a_o prophet_n 10_o they_o may_v have_v a_o prophet_n reward_n now_o follow_v after_o samuel_n long_o traverse_v the_o matter_n with_o saul_n his_o confession_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o since_o he_o be_v bring_v after_o so_o many_o shameful_a and_o fearful_a denial_n of_o that_o which_o samuel_n have_v charge_v he_o with_o at_o length_n to_o confess_v and_o for_o that_o here_o be_v other_o thing_n of_o weight_n to_o be_v consider_v of_o i_o will_v stay_v a_o while_n and_o refer_v that_o which_o i_o have_v to_o say_v about_o this_o matter_n of_o saul_n confession_n to_o these_o four_o point_n first_o i_o will_v show_v the_o odiousness_n of_o this_o sin_n in_o that_o he_o have_v so_o oft_o and_o bold_o deny_v his_o be_v in_o fault_n yet_o do_v now_o confess_v it_o second_o i_o will_v declare_v how_o and_o by_o what_o mean_n he_o be_v bring_v to_o confess_v it_o three_o see_v he_o do_v so_o which_o he_o be_v very_o unlike_a to_o come_v to_o whether_o in_o confess_v he_o repent_v also_o and_o four_a because_o it_o shall_v appear_v that_o he_o do_v not_o therefore_o even_o his_o very_a confession_n shall_v be_v see_v to_o be_v another_o note_n of_o hypocrisy_n in_o he_o doct._n 21._o a_o hypocrite_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o lie_v concern_v the_o first_o of_o the_o foulness_n of_o his_o sin_n in_o that_o he_o have_v so_o oft_o justify_v himself_o as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lay_v about_o the_o accusation_n which_o the_o prophet_n bring_v against_o he_o who_o do_v not_o see_v how_o odious_a it_o be_v in_o he_o and_o who_o will_v not_o have_v be_v persuade_v that_o he_o speak_v the_o truth_n be_v so_o great_a a_o person_n as_o he_o be_v and_o so_o bold_o and_o resolute_o affirm_v it_o when_o he_o say_v he_o have_v fulfil_v the_o commandment_n of_o the_o lord_n when_o yet_o samuel_n charge_v he_o from_o god_n that_o he_o have_v break_v it_o and_o who_o almost_o may_v a_o man_n believe_v if_o he_o may_v not_o be_v rest_v in_o and_o give_v credit_n unto_o this_o be_v therefore_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v a_o most_o shameful_a and_o grievous_a offence_n when_o man_n hyd_fw-we their_o sin_n and_o deny_v that_o they_o be_v guilty_a when_o yet_o they_o shall_v after_o confess_v it_o free_o and_o be_v contrary_a to_o themselves_o and_o so_o lie_v out_o their_o shame_n to_o they_o that_o live_v with_o they_o when_o they_o shall_v affirm_v bold_o that_o they_o be_v innocent_a yea_o with_o oath_n and_o protestation_n that_o it_o be_v so_o inasmuch_o as_o he_o that_o hear_v they_o shall_v say_v doubtless_o they_o speak_v the_o truth_n and_o yet_o afterward_o they_o themselves_o shall_v deny_v that_o which_o they_o so_o vehement_o affirm_v oh_o how_o fearful_a a_o thing_n it_o be_v example_n and_o instance_n a_o notable_a example_n we_o have_v of_o this_o in_o the_o old_a prophet_n of_o bethel_n who_o when_o he_o have_v for_o his_o own_o vain_a credit_n draw_v the_o man_n of_o god_n who_o come_v from_o luda_n contrary_a to_o the_o express_a commandment_n of_o god_n to_o eat_v in_o that_o place_n 13._o yet_o to_o his_o own_o great_a shame_n he_o be_v force_v to_o confess_v that_o he_o have_v make_v a_o lie_n in_o say_v that_o a_o angel_n appear_v to_o he_o and_o bid_v he_o do_v so_o it_o be_v the_o common_a practice_n of_o man_n 2._o to_o say_v and_o unsay_v to_o affirm_v and_o deny_v the_o same_o thing_n though_o it_o have_v be_v affirm_v with_o oath_n and_o protestation_n so_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v have_v peaceable_a and_o fair_a word_n of_o his_o neighbour_n and_o yet_o falsehood_n in_o his_o deal_n 27_o as_o joab_n salute_v abner_n friendly_a and_o yet_o smite_v he_o so_o that_o he_o die_v this_o sin_n be_v so_o breed_v in_o nature_n and_o extenuate_v they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v none_o &_o asif_v none_o be_v wholer_n and_o sound_a than_o they_o when_o yet_o afterward_o when_o the_o lord_n see_v good_a to_o unskirt_n they_o they_o be_v force_v to_o cry_v out_o as_o the_o prophet_n do_v but_o in_o a_o far_o better_a case_n when_o he_o have_v see_v the_o lord_n of_o glory_n 6._o woe_n be_v i_o i_o be_o undo_v such_o be_v the_o case_n of_o jonas_n when_o the_o lord_n give_v he_o his_o charge_n to_o go_v and_o to_o cry_v against_o nineveh_n he_o flee_v from_o his_o presence_n and_o go_v another_o way_n to_o tarshish_n and_o lest_o he_o shall_v have_v be_v bring_v back_o again_o so_o little_o be_v he_o trouble_v for_o his_o sin_n he_o make_v all_o possible_a haste_n to_o be_v go_v and_o pay_v for_o his_o carriage_n before_o hand_n and_o go_v down_o into_o the_o ship_n &_o sleep_v sound_o so_o that_o the_o fierce_a wind_n &_o sore_a tempest_n that_o make_v the_o mariner_n afraid_a can_v not_o awake_v he_o then_o the_o ship_n master_v rouse_v he_o up_o so_o that_o he_o see_v the_o great_a danger_n that_o he_o with_o the_o rest_n be_v in_o for_o all_o that_o he_o bewail_v not_o neither_o cry_v out_o of_o his_o sin_n corrupt_a nature_n when_o we_o have_v offend_v against_o his_o majesty_n even_o fly_v from_o his_o presence_n if_o we_o can_v as_o adam_n do_v and_o shake_v off_o all_o thought_n and_o go_v from_o all_o desire_n of_o confess_v it_o to_o god_n but_o that_o shall_v be_v with_o the_o great_a shame_n
to_o we_o when_o god_n shall_v pluck_v we_o out_o of_o our_o den_n and_o corner_n wherein_o we_o have_v hide_v ourselves_o and_o thus_o david_n who_o have_v not_o accuse_v himself_o for_o his_o foul_a and_o gross_a adultery_n and_o murder_n till_o nathan_n the_o prophet_n from_o god_n have_v challenge_v he_o for_o it_o yet_o after_o that_o cry_v out_o of_o his_o imborne_a corruption_n and_o affirm_v that_o to_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o other_o say_v i_o be_v bear_v in_o sin_n and_o by_o that_o be_v carry_v to_o sin_n against_o thou_o in_o secret_a and_o so_o tell_v to_o shameful_a and_o open_a sin_n in_o the_o fight_n of_o man_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v use_v that_o we_o shall_v be_v wary_a against_o willing_a offending_n and_o if_o yet_o through_o frailty_n we_o be_v overtake_v any_o way_n to_o espy_v it_o speedy_o and_o expel_v it_o and_o in_o no_o sort_n to_o set_v a_o bold_a face_n upon_o it_o as_o though_o nothing_o be_v amiss_o which_o if_o we_o do_v may_v be_v the_o beginning_n of_o we_o know_v not_o what_o trouble_n but_o see_v the_o further_a use_n of_o this_o be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o next_o point_n i_o refer_v the_o reader_n thither_o of_o his_o fault_n doct._n 22._o few_o such_o man_n to_o be_v find_v as_o may_v be_v believe_v upon_o on_o their_o word_n now_o follow_v the_o second_o to_o wit_n how_o he_o be_v bring_v to_o it_o &_o that_o be_v by_o the_o lord_n himself_o it_o be_v he_o that_o wring_v this_o confession_n from_o saul_n and_o to_o make_v he_o see_v his_o sin_n whereby_o this_o he_o bring_v to_o pass_v that_o he_o make_v saul_n eat_v his_o own_o word_n by_o confess_v his_o fault_n yea_o even_o that_o which_o he_o have_v so_o stiff_o defend_v to_o be_v no_o fault_n at_o all_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v but_o be_v it_o credible_a will_v some_o say_v that_o when_o he_o have_v bold_o and_o open_o and_o oft_o time_n deny_v that_o he_o have_v displease_v god_n in_o that_o with_o which_o he_o be_v charge_v that_o he_o can_v be_v bring_v to_o confess_v the_o contrary_a may_v it_o be_v think_v that_o he_o can_v bear_v such_o shame_n and_o reproach_n be_v so_o great_a a_o person_n when_o a_o mean_a and_o inferior_a body_n will_v hardly_o have_v go_v under_o it_o what_o shall_v we_o then_o say_v if_o he_o come_v to_o confess_v it_o as_o it_o be_v clear_a he_o do_v but_o this_o who_o may_v a_o man_n believe_v when_o he_o speak_v good_a word_n as_o saul_n do_v here_o who_o if_o thousand_o have_v hear_v he_o they_o will_v have_v think_v he_o have_v answer_v a_o most_o sound_a truth_n unto_o the_o prophet_n indeed_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v etc._n that_o this_o and_o such_o like_a example_n do_v teach_v that_o there_o be_v much_o falsehood_n and_o deceit_n in_o man_n heart_n and_o that_o further_a than_o we_o have_v proof_n and_o experience_n of_o man_n truth_n and_o sincerity_n in_o good_a conscience_n keep_v we_o ought_v not_o to_o be_v too_o credulous_a nor_o too_o ready_a to_o believe_v they_o in_o their_o own_o case_n when_o they_o pretend_v to_o tell_v a_o truth_n and_o go_v about_o to_o clear_v themselves_o from_o accusation_n and_o most_o of_o all_o if_o it_o be_v in_o a_o matter_n concern_v their_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n aswell_o as_o their_o credit_n for_o man_n will_v lie_v most_o gross_o to_o enrich_v themselves_o and_o to_o seek_v their_o pleasure_n and_o estimation_n and_o therefore_o when_o these_o be_v in_o jeopardy_n and_o can_v be_v uphold_v but_o by_o a_o lie_n he_o be_v a_o rare_a man_n which_o in_o such_o a_o case_n will_v not_o strain_v his_o conscience_n yea_o and_o go_v direct_o against_o it_o both_o secret_o in_o do_v and_o open_o in_o defend_v evil_a such_o a_o sway_n sin_n bear_v in_o a_o man_n and_o so_o dear_a it_o be_v to_o he_o that_o nothing_o can_v separate_v they_o two_o but_o death_n they_o be_v swear_v friend_n and_o even_o as_o two_o twin_n which_o go_v together_o and_o grow_v together_o so_o that_o hurt_v one_o and_o hurt_n both_o green_a one_o and_o grieve_v both_o so_o that_o ruth_n be_v not_o so_o near_o knit_v to_o naomi_n her_o mother_n in_o law_n as_o these_o when_o she_o say_v 1._o god_n do_v so_o and_o so_o to_o i_o if_o any_o thing_n but_o death_n separate_v we_o twain_o now_o therefore_o 2._o they_o be_v thus_o fast_o knit_v and_o link_v together_o they_o do_v as_o it_o be_v swear_v each_o to_o other_o even_o like_o a_o band_n of_o thief_n together_o that_o they_o will_v never_o bewray_v one_o another_o and_o hereby_o it_o do_v come_v to_o pass_v that_o when_o man_n have_v sin_v grievous_o just_a and_o upright_o who_o come_v against_o they_o may_v be_v justify_v god_n do_v oft_o time_n himself_o when_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n to_o be_v wray_v they_o bring_v their_o wickedness_n to_o light_n or_o force_v they_o to_o confess_v their_o guiltiness_n at_o length_n even_o as_o we_o see_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v here_o in_o saul_n and_o daily_o do_v and_o have_v do_v in_o sundry_a other_o but_o the_o devil_n hold_v they_o at_o this_o point_n as_o long_o as_o he_o can_v in_o the_o hide_v or_o deny_v of_o the_o same_o till_o a_o strong_a than_o he_o who_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v constrain_v they_o to_o say_v we_o have_v sin_v and_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o saul_n themselves_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v the_o secret_n of_o his_o heart_n disclose_v who_o have_v so_o long_o and_o stiff_o deny_v his_o sin_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v bring_v he_o to_o confession_n of_o it_o though_o to_o no_o benefit_n of_o his_o own_o yet_o for_o the_o instruction_n of_o his_o church_n to_o the_o world_n end_n it_o be_v neither_o wring_v from_o he_o by_o force_n for_o what_o man_n may_v constrain_v he_o neither_o be_v he_o bring_v to_o it_o by_o flattery_n for_o he_o that_o deal_v with_o he_o to_o confess_v be_v samuel_n the_o lord_n faithful_a prophet_n no_o neither_o do_v the_o most_o weighty_a convince_a he_o by_o the_o same_o prophet_n prevail_v with_o he_o the_o lord_n therefore_o that_o draw_v he_o to_o confess_v and_o it_o may_v teach_v we_o that_o god_n who_o do_v wonderful_a thing_n he_o also_o force_v liar_n dissembler_n and_o such_o as_o none_o can_v wring_v from_o they_o the_o least_o acknowledgement_n of_o sin_n which_o yet_o be_v well_o know_v that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o it_o and_o do_v with_o tooth_n and_o nail_n as_o they_o say_v deny_v it_o yet_o after_o all_o this_o the_o lord_n will_v make_v even_o themselves_o to_o bring_v it_o to_o light_n &_o confess_v it_o and_o this_o he_o do_v for_o these_o end_n 1._o first_o that_o all_o may_v know_v how_o bad_a and_o vile_a the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v and_o how_o stiff_o wilful_a and_o subtle_a it_o be_v yea_o and_o harden_v which_o will_v not_o easy_o be_v believe_v except_o the_o lord_n shall_v by_o some_o mean_n bewray_v it_o no_o other_o being_n more_o available_a hereto_o than_o the_o party_n own_o confession_n which_o be_v more_o than_o many_o witness_n second_o 2._o the_o lord_n do_v it_o to_o this_o end_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o hide_v deny_v or_o extenuate_v our_o sin_n when_o we_o be_v convict_v of_o they_o or_o when_o we_o ought_v free_o to_o confess_v they_o for_o by_o so_o do_v
much_o under_o the_o cross_n but_o by_o constraint_n and_o violence_n not_o willing_o and_o humble_o to_o justify_v god_n in_o his_o punish_n of_o they_o nor_o for_o that_o they_o be_v persuade_v he_o love_v they_o and_o therefore_o they_o can_v show_v none_o to_o he_o again_o and_o therefore_o if_o man_n can_v do_v no_o more_o but_o so_o idest_fw-la confess_v in_o theit_n affliction_n some_o fault_n to_o god_n as_o the_o boy_n under_o the_o rod_n if_o neither_o before_o their_o affliction_n they_o give_v true_a testimony_n of_o their_o repentance_n nor_o after_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n of_o amendment_n they_o be_v in_o no_o better_a account_n with_o god_n than_o they_o who_o never_o make_v any_o profession_n or_o protestation_n of_o amendment_n at_o all_o quest_n if_o you_o ask_v sudden_a pang_n that_o cause_v he_o to_o utter_v they_o but_o yet_o we_o see_v god_n force_v he_o thereto_o to_o the_o end_n that_o he_o may_v thereby_o bewray_v his_o hypocrisy_n when_o it_o may_v be_v see_v that_o he_o amend_v not_o for_o all_o that_o and_o also_o to_o leave_v good_a instruction_n thereby_o to_o all_o posterity_n in_o time_n to_o come_v doct._n 24._o the_o most_o careless_a hearer_n shall_v one_o day_n condemn_v themselves_o for_o thereby_o we_o may_v see_v and_o learn_v that_o how_o little_a regard_n soever_o man_n have_v of_o good_a lesson_n exhortation_n and_o admonition_n for_o the_o time_n when_o they_o receive_v they_o as_o too_o common_o we_o see_v it_o to_o be_v so_o yet_o so_o much_o the_o more_o they_o show_v themselves_o to_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o bewray_v themselves_o to_o be_v far_o from_o a_o teachable_a mind_n who_o do_v so_o for_o the_o time_n shall_v come_v in_o which_o they_o shall_v find_v great_a fault_n with_o themselves_o for_o their_o so_o do_v and_o for_o their_o sleeveless_a regard_n that_o they_o have_v have_v thereof_o even_o as_o we_o see_v that_o saul_n here_o do_v or_o else_o they_o shall_v show_v themselves_o to_o be_v in_o worse_a case_n towards_o god_n then_o if_o they_o do_v so_o the_o many_o sermon_n that_o be_v slight_o hear_v and_o little_o regard_v even_o as_o if_o they_o be_v also_o as_o little_a worth_n their_o loose_a and_o negligent_a hear_n of_o they_o shall_v one_o day_n be_v cry_v out_o of_o as_o fast_o and_o the_o committer_n of_o the_o sin_n shall_v cast_v it_o up_o as_o unsavoury_a morsel_n which_o man_n shall_v wish_v most_o hearty_o that_o they_o have_v never_o take_v they_o in_o even_o so_o they_o shall_v wish_v a_o thousand_o time_n that_o they_o have_v never_o commit_v the_o sin_n for_o such_o may_v not_o think_v that_o the_o remember_v of_o a_o sin_n afterward_o when_o god_n shall_v load_v the_o offender_n with_o it_o shall_v be_v like_o the_o time_n wherein_o it_o be_v commit_v which_o ought_v worthy_o to_o vex_v the_o conscience_n of_o such_o as_o can_v rush_v violent_o into_o many_o sin_n but_o be_v trouble_v for_o few_o and_o lay_v on_o load_n upon_o another_o but_o cast_v off_o none_o who_o if_o they_o judge_v not_o themselves_o before_o the_o lord_n judge_v they_o the_o burden_n will_v press_v they_o down_o so_o 11._o and_o in_o such_o wise_a as_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v it_o and_o it_o shall_v be_v as_o much_o to_o the_o comfort_n of_o those_o who_o with_o honest_a and_o good_a heart_n hear_v and_o receive_v the_o word_n now_o while_o it_o be_v preach_v to_o they_o and_o fear_v their_o own_o frailty_n that_o they_o may_v not_o offend_v they_o shall_v not_o have_v such_o after_o reckon_n bring_v against_o they_o as_o saul_n here_o have_v when_o he_o say_v to_o samuel_n i_o have_v transgress_v against_o thy_o word_n and_o as_o many_o other_o have_v who_o hoard_v up_o sorrow_n against_o themselves_o for_o long_a time_n after_o because_o they_o will_v not_o receive_v instruction_n a_o long_a time_n before_o and_o this_o of_o the_o first_o of_o the_o two_o speech_n which_o saul_n utter_v when_o he_o beside_o the_o confession_n of_o his_o sin_n against_o god_n say_v also_o to_o samuel_n i_o have_v transgress_v against_o thy_o word_n doct._n 25._o the_o least_o hope_n of_o concealment_n harden_v the_o hypocrite_n in_o sin_n the_o second_o follow_v which_o be_v this_o i_o be_v afraid_a of_o the_o people_n how_o he_o bewray_v his_o hypocrisy_n in_o these_o word_n even_o when_o he_o confess_v his_o sin_n i_o have_v show_v before_o the_o thing_n that_o i_o note_v out_o of_o they_o here_o be_v this_o that_o he_o think_v samuel_n can_v not_o find_v out_o this_o that_o he_o
