other_o of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n have_v a_o sight_n of_o their_o sin_n a_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o a_o taste_n of_o the_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n how_o then_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o these_o man_n be_v so_o trouble_v in_o mind_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o their_o trouble_n so_o befall_v they_o either_o for_o fail_v in_o some_o of_o these_o former_a thing_n or_o else_o they_o be_v rather_o afflict_v for_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n than_o for_o punish_v of_o sin_n in_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v it_o always_o provide_v that_o we_o think_v not_o every_o conflict_n of_o conscience_n continual_o and_o chief_o to_o be_v for_o the_o pursue_v of_o our_o sin_n but_o sometime_o and_o principal_o that_o it_o come_v for_o the_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o yet_o secondary_o or_o less_o principal_o for_o the_o scourge_v of_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o job._n whereupon_o let_v all_o man_n be_v admonish_v when_o they_o see_v good_a man_n thus_o humble_v &_o throw_v down_o in_o mind_n to_o lay_v their_o hand_n on_o their_o mouth_n from_o say_v sure_o these_o man_n be_v but_o hypocrite_n doubtless_o these_o man_n be_v great_a sinner_n the_o lord_n have_v find_v out_o their_o hypocrisy_n for_o good_a reason_n there_o be_v that_o such_o silence_n shall_v be_v use_v for_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v as_o well_o make_v trial_n of_o their_o faith_n as_o take_v punishment_n on_o their_o sin_n for_o if_o such_o affliction_n shall_v always_o and_o chief_o be_v send_v for_o sin_n than_o it_o shall_v follow_v that_o all_o other_o as_o they_o exceed_v they_o in_o sin_n shall_v also_o exceed_v they_o in_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n but_o now_o come_v to_o the_o salve_v of_o this_o sore_n sore_a i_o shall_v seem_v very_o strange_a in_o my_o cure_n and_o so_o much_o the_o more_o be_v wonder_v at_o by_o how_o much_o in_o manner_n of_o proceed_v i_o differ_v from_o the_o most_o sort_n of_o man_n herein_o i_o be_o to_o we_o and_o uncertain_a to_o they_o which_o be_v trouble_v with_o such_o blind_a grief_n whereof_o they_o can_v see_v no_o reason_n as_o often_o it_o happen_v to_o god_n child_n in_o secret_a providence_n who_o either_o never_o know_v god_n or_o else_o have_v but_o a_o general_a knowledge_n of_o he_o i_o answer_v that_o as_o i_o deny_v not_o physic_n to_o be_v minister_v if_o it_o in_o part_n proceed_v from_o a_o natural_a cause_n so_o i_o require_v the_o word_n especial_o to_o show_v the_o principal_a and_o original_a cause_n to_o begin_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o this_o i_o do_v the_o rather_o because_o i_o will_v have_v wisdom_n both_o in_o consider_v the_o state_n of_o the_o body_n if_o need_v so_o require_v and_o in_o look_v chief_o to_o the_o â—oule_n which_o so_o few_o think_v of_o if_o a_o man_n trouble_v in_o conscience_n come_v to_o a_o minister_n it_o may_v be_v he_o will_v look_v all_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o nothing_o to_o the_o body_n if_o he_o come_v to_o a_o physician_n he_o only_o consider_v of_o the_o body_n and_o neglect_v the_o soul_n for_o my_o part_n i_o will_v never_o have_v the_o physician_n counsel_v sever_v nor_o the_o minister_n labour_n neglect_v because_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n dwell_v together_o it_o be_v convenient_a that_o as_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v cure_v by_o the_o word_n by_o prayer_n by_o fast_v by_o threaten_v or_o by_o comfort_v so_o the_o body_n also_o shall_v be_v bring_v into_o some_o temperature_n by_o physic_n by_o purge_v by_o diet_n by_o restore_v by_o music_n and_o by_o such_o like_a mean_n provide_v always_o that_o it_o be_v do_v so_o in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o spirit_n as_o we_o think_v not_o by_o these_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o smother_v or_o smoke_v out_o our_o trouble_n but_o as_o purpose_v to_o use_v they_o as_o preparative_n whereby_o both_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n may_v be_v make_v more_o capable_a of_o the_o spiritual_a mean_n to_o follow_v after_o as_o we_o require_v these_o thing_n to_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o ministry_n in_o such_o a_o perplexity_n so_o we_o will_v wish_v the_o person_n minister_a to_o be_v man_n learned_a and_o of_o sound_n judgement_n wise_a and_o of_o godly_a experience_n meek_a and_o of_o most_o love_a spirit_n for_o when_o the_o trouble_a patient_n shall_v be_v well_o persuade_v of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o discretion_n &_o there_o with_o all_o shall_v perceive_v we_o to_o come_v in_o tender_a and_o love_a affection_n i_o think_v a_o entrance_n be_v make_v and_o all_o prejudice_n be_v take_v away_o so_o as_o we_o may_v the_o more_o free_o work_v upon_o the_o conscience_n first_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n as_o to_o some_o cause_n of_o their_o trouble_n herein_o we_o must_v labour_v to_o put_v away_o all_o confusion_n and_o blindness_n of_o sorrrowe_n endevor_v by_o wisdom_n to_o bring_v the_o party_n wound_v to_o some_o certain_a object_n &_o matter_n of_o their_o trouble_n and_o so_o draw_v out_o of_o they_o the_o confession_n of_o some_o several_a especial_a and_o secret_a sin_n i_o say_v several_a &_o secret_a sin_n because_o i_o know_v how_o many_o through_o a_o palpable_a blindness_n or_o disorder_a discern_v of_o sin_n talk_n nothing_o so_o much_o as_o of_o sin_n and_o yet_o they_o either_o can_v not_o descry_v several_a sin_n or_o they_o will_v not_o be_v bring_v to_o acknowledge_v their_o secret_a sin_n whereof_o the_o one_o proceed_v of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o other_o of_o self_n love_n which_o make_v we_o loath_a even_o in_o our_o travel_n of_o mind_n to_o shame_n ourselves_o now_o that_o the_o confession_n of_o particular_a sin_n be_v requisite_a it_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o two_o and_o thirty_o psalm_n 32._o wherein_o be_v a_o psalm_n of_o
start_v for_o the_o best_a we_o have_v reason_n to_o say_v for_o our_o self_n &_o courage_n to_o defend_v ourselves_o against_o all_o they_o that_o do_v deal_v with_o we_o but_o now_o the_o spirit_n draw_v we_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n it_o let_v we_o see_v that_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n and_o that_o our_o strength_n be_v weakness_n in_o respect_n of_o he_o then_o do_v our_o heart_n begin_v to_o fail_v we_o then_o do_v we_o lay_v our_o hand_n on_o our_o mouth_n and_o dare_v not_o answer_v nay_o then_o do_v we_o quick_o take_v up_o our_o cross_n because_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v do_v it_o behold_v here_o how_o the_o spirit_n work_v behold_v how_o sin_n be_v corrupt_v and_o who_o so_o can_v behold_v here_o this_o in_o himself_o may_v assure_o say_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o he_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o vain_a within_o he_o nay_o that_o it_o be_v mighty_a and_o lively_a in_o operation_n in_o his_o heart_n the_o three_o note_n and_o effect_n be_v the_o bring_v on_o forward_o of_o this_o work_n unto_o justification_n for_o when_o the_o spirit_n have_v bring_v we_o thus_o far_o then_o do_v it_o begin_v to_o open_v unto_o we_o a_o door_n unto_o the_o grace_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n it_o do_v put_v into_o our_o mind_n that_o there_o be_v mercy_n with_o god_n and_o therefore_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o seek_v mercy_n at_o his_o hand_n afterward_o it_o do_v let_v we_o see_v how_o christ_n suffer_v to_o take_v away_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o world_n that_o in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n we_o may_v look_v to_o be_v justify_v before_o god_n and_o this_o it_o do_v not_o let_v we_o see_v only_o but_o do_v effectual_o work_v a_o sure_a persuasion_n of_o it_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o confirm_v the_o same_o by_o two_o notable_a effect_n the_o first_o be_v a_o joy_n most_o unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a wherewith_o our_o heart_n must_v needs_o be_v whole_o take_v up_o and_o ravish_v when_o we_o see_v ourselves_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n of_o the_o free_a mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n redeem_v from_o death_n deliver_v from_o hell_n and_o free_v from_o the_o fearful_a condemnation_n of_o the_o wicked_a the_o second_o be_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n which_o indeed_o pass_v all_o understanding_n while_o sin_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n remain_v there_o be_v no_o peace_n nor_o rest_n no_o quietness_n to_o be_v find_v but_o fear_v within_o terror_n without_o and_o trouble_n on_o every_o side_n but_o when_o sin_n be_v once_o nail_v to_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n when_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v out_o of_o our_o conscience_n and_o the_o puninshment_n thereof_o far_o remove_v then_o must_v needs_o ensue_v great_a peace_n for_o our_o accuser_n dare_v not_o proceed_v against_o we_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v we_o and_o god_n be_v at_o one_o with_o we_o and_o for_o this_o we_o have_v the_o warrant_n and_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n can_v flesh_n and_o blood_n persuade_v we_o of_o it_o can_v any_o creature_n assure_v we_o how_o god_n be_v affect_v towards_o we_o no_o doubtless_o and_o therefore_o where_o this_o joy_n and_o peace_n be_v there_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o author_n and_o worker_n of_o the_o same_o for_o as_o no_o man_n know_v what_o be_v in_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n which_o be_v in_o he_o so_o none_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o must_v certify_v our_o hearre_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o same_o and_o hereof_o there_o do_v arise_v that_o which_o we_o take_v as_o the_o four_o note_n when_o we_o find_v it_o in_o ourselves_o to_o wit_n the_o life_n and_o nemblenes_n that_o be_v in_o we_o to_o do_v good_a for_o when_o a_o man_n do_v find_v favour_n from_o god_n for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n than_o the_o love_n of_o god_n constrain_v he_o that_o joy_n which_o he_o conceive_v enforce_v he_o and_o put_v life_n into_o he_o for_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v please_v unto_o god_n then_o he_o begin_v to_o find_v himself_o not_o only_o reclaim_v from_o evil_a but_o also_o apply_v and_o frame_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a then_o be_v his_o understanding_n inlyghten_v to_o see_v into_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o into_o that_o great_a work_n of_o his_o redemption_n and_o into_o whatsoever_o concern_v the_o save_a health_n of_o his_o soul_n then_o be_v his_o judgement_n reform_v and_o he_o be_v make_v able_a to_o judge_v between_o false_a religion_n and_o true_a between_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n between_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o displease_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n then_o be_v his_o affection_n in_o some_o good_a measure_n alter_v his_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o upon_o earthly_a but_o upon_o heavenly_a thing_n his_o joy_n be_v not_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o in_o the_o heaven_n his_o anger_n be_v waste_v and_o spend_v not_o upon_o his_o own_o privae_fw-la cause_n and_o quarrel_n but_o upon_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o upon_o whatsoever_o hinder_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o god_n this_o be_v the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o he_o thus_o he_o live_v that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n and_o thus_o he_o lead_v his_o life_n continual_o for_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o do_v live_v according_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o this_o have_v weakness_n join_v with_o it_o and_o man_n through_o frailty_n may_v soon_o fall_v and_o therefore_o their_o life_n be_v say_v to_o be_v hide_v in_o christ_n because_o in_o full_a and_o perfect_a manner_n it_o do_v not_o appear_v therefore_o if_o notwithstanding_o these_o frailty_n and_o fall_n we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o still_o retain_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n we_o must_v search_v ourselves_o and_o try_v our_o heart_n by_o these_o rule_n first_o if_o when_o through_o frailty_n we_o have_v fall_v for_o who_o be_v he_o that_o fall_v not_o we_o will_v then_o know_v whether_o by_o our_o fall_n we_o have_v lose_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o let_v we_o see_v what_o like_v or_o mislykinge_v we_o have_v of_o sin_n for_o it_o after_o our_o fall_n we_o do_v hold_v our_o former_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o oftenner_a we_o fall_v the_o more_o thorough_a and_o deadly_a hatred_n we_o conceive_v against_o sin_n undoubted_o that_o frailty_n have_v not_o as_o yet_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o spirit_n second_o come_v and_o see_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o thy_o sorrow_n for_o so_o long_o as_o thy_o sorrow_n increase_v for_o thy_o sin_n it_o can_v be_v think_v that_o sin_n and_o the_o flesh_n have_v overcome_v and_o utter_o quench_v the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o three_o try_v thy_o care_n and_o if_o thou_o groan_v in_o a_o godly_a care_n both_o how_o thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o wage_v battle_n against_o sin_n in_o the_o plain_a field_n and_o how_o thou_o may_v prevente_v sin_n in_o all_o his_o policy_n thou_o have_v a_o further_a assurance_n that_o sin_n although_o it_o be_v as_o great_a as_o goliath_n yet_o it_o have_v not_o hitherto_o prevail_v against_o thy_o poor_a and_o little_a david_n i_o say_v against_o those_o few_o and_o small_a grace_n which_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o but_o the_o last_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o that_o be_v this_o when_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o redeem_v that_o which_o by_o thy_o fall_n thou_o have_v lose_v &_o have_v a_o care_n to_o run_v so_o much_o fast_a forward_o by_o how_o much_o more_o thou_o have_v be_v let_v by_o thy_o fall_n than_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o thou_o yea_o lively_a and_o mighty_a in_o operation_n and_o such_o as_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o the_o until_o the_o day_n of_o christ._n thus_o may_v we_o in_o some_o good_a and_o competent_a measure_n try_v and_o prove_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o for_o where_o these_o fruit_n be_v to_o be_v find_v there_o be_v also_o the_o spirit_n of_o god._n never_o know_v god_n in_o christ_n or_o carnal_a professor_n such_o as_o have_v not_o profess_v christianity_n aright_o if_o we_o look_v among_o the_o hearhen_a how_o many_o of_o they_o have_v willing_o go_v under_o poverty_n and_o have_v be_v content_a to_o unburden_v themselves_o of_o all_o worldly_a treasure_n how_o have_v some_o of_o they_o while_o their_o mind_n be_v unappalled_a suffer_v imprisonment_n exile_n and_o extreme_a torture_n of_o body_n rather_o than_o they_o will_v betray_v their_o country_n how_o many_o of_o they_o have_v devour_v many_o injury_n and_o bear_v outward_a trouble_n with_o some_o ease_n and_o with_o no_o resistance_n while_o their_o mind_n be_v at_o liberty_n and_o yet_o look_v not_o into_o the_o mean_a but_o the_o best_a and_o most_o excellent_a man_n among_o they_o even_o their_o wise_a philosopher_n sweet_a orator_n and_o exquisite_a poet_n who_o in_o bear_v and_o forbear_v think_v the_o chief_a point_n of_o virtue_n to_o consist_v and_o you_o shall_v see_v when_o once_o some_o great_a distress_n of_o mind_n do_v wound_n they_o some_o will_v make_v a_o end_n of_o it_o by_o prepare_v a_o cup_n of_o deadly_a poison_n mind_n be_v not_o overmastre_v but_o when_o their_o divine_a and_o supreme_a essence_n which_o they_o accknowledge_v to_o be_v god_n do_v by_o his_o power_n cross_v &_o overturn_v their_o witty_a devise_n and_o headstrong_a attempt_n so_o as_o without_o hope_n of_o remedy_n they_o be_v hamper_v in_o pensivenes_n and_o sorrow_n of_o mind_n than_o not_o be_v able_a to_o turn_v themselves_o under_o so_o heavy_a a_o burden_n they_o shrink_v down_o and_o by_o violent_a death_n will_v rid_v themselves_o of_o that_o disquietness_n &_o impatience_n of_o their_o trouble_a mind_n but_o let_v we_o come_v near_o and_o whether_o we_o behold_v the_o papist_n or_o the_o family_n of_o love_n or_o the_o common_a sort_n of_o christian_n we_o shall_v see_v they_o will_v pass_v quiet_o through_o many_o affliction_n whether_o for_o that_o they_o have_v a_o spirit_n of_o slumber_v and_o numbne_v cast_v upon_o they_o or_o whether_o because_o they_o have_v braw_v themselves_o through_o some_o senseless_a blockishness_n as_o man_n hew_v out_o of_o hard_a oak_n or_o grave_v out_o of_o marble_n stone_n i_o know_v not_o but_o yet_o when_o the_o lord_n shall_v let_v loose_a the_o cord_n of_o their_o conscience_n and_o shall_v set_v before_o their_o face_n their_o sin_n commit_v see_v what_o fearful_a end_n they_o have_v while_o some_o of_o they_o by_o hang_v themselves_o some_o by_o knowledge_n and_o barrenness_n of_o conscience_n to_o speak_v dispute_n and_o declaim_v of_o all_o these_o thing_n very_o skilful_o which_o flicker_a in_o the_o circumference_n of_o the_o brain_n instruction_n concern_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n the_o prophet_n by_o his_o own_o experience_n teach_v we_o that_o he_o can_v find_v no_o relief_n of_o his_o sickness_n until_o he_o have_v remember_v and_o make_v confession_n of_o his_o sin_n what_o shall_v we_o think_v that_o the_o prophet_n of_o god_n teach_v so_o wonderful_o by_o the_o word_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o and_o monstrous_a temptation_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n he_o fear_v least_o in_o time_n by_o long_a suit_n he_o may_v fall_v into_o they_o or_o at_o the_o least_o for_o that_o he_o see_v not_o of_o tentation_n be_v either_o correction_n for_o some_o sin_n past_a or_o punishment_n for_o some_o sin_n present_a or_o forwarner_n of_o some_o sin_n to_o come_v we_o shall_v see_v many_o tempt_v to_o adultery_n who_o no_o doubt_n can_v be_v bring_v to_o commit_v it_o &_o yet_o because_o in_o their_o youth_n they_o have_v commit_v it_o and_o not_o repent_v of_o it_o it_o come_v to_o they_o again_o the_o like_a may_v be_v observe_v in_o theft_n in_o gluttony_n and_o in_o other_o tentation_n which_o be_v not_o so_o much_o send_v unto_o we_o present_o to_o overcome_v we_o as_o to_o put_v the_o body_n through_o some_o extraordinary_a repletion_n have_v get_v some_o great_a surfeit_n not_o so_o much_o to_o the_o weaken_n of_o nature_n as_o to_o the_o threaten_n of_o imminent_a death_n and_o therefore_o require_v rather_o some_o strong_a purgation_n than_o comfortable_a and_o cordial_a medicine_n then_o the_o soul_n bring_v almost_o to_o death_n door_n with_o some_o extraordinary_a sin_n be_v rather_o to_o be_v bore_v and_o pierce_v with_o the_o denounce_v of_o god_n judgement_n than_o otherwise_o but_o because_o we_o will_v deal_v more_o plain_o &_o less_o confuse_o it_o be_v our_o own_o cause_n we_o refer_v ourselves_o unto_o christ_n who_o we_o know_v to_o be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n and_o able_a to_o answer_v all_o that_o can_v possible_o be_v object_v against_o us._n for_o see_v satan_n be_v a_o wrangle_a and_o subtle_a sophister_n it_o be_v our_o fure_a and_o safe_a dispatch_n to_o break_v of_o all_o dispute_n with_o he_o and_o to_o send_v he_o thither_o where_o he_o may_v receive_v his_o best_a answer_n and_o we_o need_v not_o to_o doubt_v but_o he_o that_o have_v answer_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n and_o cancel_a the_o obligation_n that_o be_v against_o we_o before_o his_o heavenly_a father_n will_v easy_o defeat_v whatsoever_o the_o old_a serpent_n our_o accuser_n the_o devil_n be_v able_a to_o allege_v against_o us._n but_o if_o we_o can_v so_o avoid_v his_o assault_n but_o needs_o we_o must_v enter_v the_o combat_n with_o he_o let_v we_o take_v unto_o ourselves_o that_o courage_n that_o become_v the_o soldier_n of_o christ_n and_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n manful_o oppose_v ourselves_o know_v that_o he_o which_o have_v bring_v we_o into_o the_o battle_n will_v both_o save_v we_o and_o deliver_v we_o out_o of_o all_o danger_n then_o if_o the_o enemy_n shall_v say_v that_o we_o have_v no_o faith_n not_o and_o therefore_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o christ_n we_o may_v answer_v that_o our_o believe_v depend_v not_o upon_o his_o testimony_n it_o be_v enough_o that_o ourselves_o do_v know_v and_o feel_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o we_o do_v believe_v as_o for_o he_o we_o do_v the_o rather_o persuade_v
lord_n will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o how_o can_v these_o two_o stand_v together_o first_o to_o pray_v that_o a_o new_a spirit_n may_v be_v create_v in_o he_o and_o then_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o sure_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v still_o in_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o the_o grace_n &_o gracious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o go_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v renew_v in_o he_o by_o this_o than_o we_o see_v that_o the_o very_a chief_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v even_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a when_o they_o fall_v into_o sin_n but_o yet_o that_o no_o liberty_n may_v be_v take_v hereby_o let_v we_o a_o little_a consider_v what_o grief_n and_o punishment_n they_o procure_v to_o themselves_o that_o do_v by_o any_o mean_n loose_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n first_o of_o all_o we_o must_v know_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v be_v get_v by_o our_o labour_n yet_o it_o cause_v we_o much_o labour_n and_o we_o must_v undergo_v much_o travel_n and_o god_n and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n be_v assure_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v forgive_v he_o and_o that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n there_o do_v arise_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o great_a joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n a_o joy_n i_o say_v that_o be_v unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o this_o joy_n be_v lose_v and_o go_v when_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v go_v with_o how_o great_a grief_n and_o woe_n they_o know_v that_o in_o any_o measure_n have_v taste_v of_o it_o again_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v choke_v in_o man_n than_o they_o have_v no_o hart_n to_o do_v good_a they_o have_v no_o affection_n to_o goodness_n but_o all_o be_v go_v and_o they_o be_v make_v for_o the_o time_n as_o it_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a burden_n of_o the_o earth_n what_o grief_n can_v be_v great_a than_o this_o what_o sorrow_n can_v sink_v more_o deep_a then_o that_o a_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v clean_o withhold_v from_o do_v good_a moreover_o it_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o this_o sort_n go_v than_o he_o that_o be_v most_o righteous_a before_o may_v soon_o fall_v into_o great_a sin_n yea_o and_o which_o be_v more_o they_o shall_v also_o suffer_v the_o reproach_n of_o their_o sin_n for_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o god_n make_v with_o he_o that_o though_o he_o will_v not_o take_v his_o mercy_n utter_o from_o they_o yet_o he_o will_v visit_v their_o sin_n with_o the_o rod_n and_o their_o iniquity_n with_o scourge_n and_o what_o grief_n this_o be_v the_o example_n of_o god_n child_n may_v show_v we_o what_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o noah_n become_v a_o laugh_a stock_n to_o his_o own_o son_n what_o heart-breaking_n to_o david_n by_o his_o own_o son_n to_o be_v thrust_v from_o his_o kingdom_n so_o grievous_a be_v those_o punishment_n lay_v upon_o they_o that_o if_o without_o any_o respect_n of_o hell_n or_o heaven_n we_o can_v consider_v of_o they_o we_o have_v rather_o want_v all_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n which_o they_o enjoy_v than_o we_o will_v bear_v the_o reproach_n and_o feel_v the_o pain_n which_o they_o suffer_v last_o of_o all_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v once_o decay_v they_o can_v never_o be_v repair_v and_o recover_v but_o with_o much_o sorrow_n and_o great_a danger_n for_o it_o can_v but_o breed_v much_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n to_o remember_v his_o former_a sin_n to_o examine_v and_o see_v the_o greatness_n of_o they_o to_o apply_v god_n judgement_n to_o they_o and_o to_o provoke_v himself_o to_o sorrow_n for_o they_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v to_o go_v through_o the_o pike_n and_o through_o a_o purgatory_n in_o this_o present_a life_n and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v do_v before_o we_o can_v recover_v god_n grace_n again_o again_o it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n for_o in_o such_o case_n man_n be_v bring_v as_o it_o be_v with_o jonas_n into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o as_o david_n say_v into_o the_o deep_a water_n so_o that_o all_o the_o surge_n and_o wave_n do_v pass_v and_o flow_v over_o he_o now_o we_o know_v what_o danger_n it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v thrust_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n into_o the_o deep_a water_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n wherefore_o all_o these_o thing_n consider_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o our_o labour_n the_o loss_n of_o all_o true_a joy_n the_o unfitnesse_n to_o do_v good_a the_o readiness_n to_o sin_n the_o grief_n and_o danger_n that_o ensue_v thereof_o will_n or_o at_o the_o least_o wise_a may_v cause_v we_o to_o be_v ware_n how_o we_o quench_v the_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n in_o humblinge_a of_o of_o we_o which_o also_o do_v of_o god_n against_o their_o false_a accusation_n and_o have_v preach_v against_o their_o
sin_n than_o they_o leave_v of_o mock_v &_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o heart_n where_o first_o we_o may_v note_v the_o power_n of_o god_n word_n which_o only_o be_v able_a to_o touch_v our_o conscience_n for_o sin_n for_o neither_o the_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n nor_o other_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n can_v prick_v their_o heart_n as_o be_v able_a only_o to_o cast_v they_o into_o a_o admiration_n what_o more_o forcible_a thing_n then_o to_o cause_v a_o goâ—ly_a sorrow_n they_o to_o have_v our_o conscience_n prick_v what_o so_o able_a to_o prick_v our_o conscience_n as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n indeed_o many_o feel_v sorrow_n and_o be_v inward_o prick_v but_o because_o therewith_o be_v not_o join_v the_o power_n of_o god_n word_n they_o be_v either_o senseless_a as_o block_n or_o in_o their_o feel_n they_o be_v murmurer_n this_o come_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o dignity_n of_o god_n his_o word_n in_o that_o no_o wonder_n from_o heaven_n no_o miracle_n on_o earth_n which_o teach_v the_o old_a way_n to_o forsake_v it_o the_o new_a way_n to_o enter_v into_o it_o and_o the_o perfect_v way_n to_o continue_v in_o it_o and_o thus_o much_o for_o the_o general_a scope_n of_o this_o doctrine_n now_o more_o particular_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o this_o first_o part_n three_o thing_n first_o the_o power_n of_o the_o word_n to_o prick_v our_o conscience_n second_o that_o this_o prick_n must_v not_o cause_v in_o we_o a_o more_o rebel_a against_o the_o word_n or_o minister_n thereof_o but_o rather_o a_o great_a reverence_n to_o they_o both_o three_o such_o prick_v must_v prepare_v we_o to_o a_o great_a desire_n to_o profit_n for_o the_o first_o we_o must_v know_v that_o this_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o repentance_n and_o this_o be_v the_o entry_n to_o godliness_n
