because_o christ_n say_v unto_o he_o thou_o be_v peter_n and_o on_o this_o rock_n will_v i_o build_v my_o church_n and_o i_o will_v give_v unto_o thou_o the_o key_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n prove_v from_o scripture_n that_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n succeed_v in_o all_o the_o right_n and_o prerogative_n of_o st._n peter_n for_o unless_o this_o be_v prove_v whatever_o prerogative_n st._n peter_n have_v it_o signify_v nothing_o to_o they_o and_o yet_o this_o can_v be_v prove_v but_o by_o institution_n for_o though_o christ_n have_v bestow_v a_o primacy_n on_o s._n peter_n yet_o unless_o he_o express_o grant_v it_o to_o his_o successor_n too_o nay_o to_o his_o successor_n in_o the_o see_v of_o rome_n his_o pramacy_n as_o be_v a_o personal_a prerogative_n must_v die_v with_o his_o person_n as_o a_o prince_n may_v grant_v a_o priority_n to_o person_n in_o the_o same_o office_n and_o power_n may_v make_v a_o first_o colonel_n or_o a_o first_o captain_n but_o if_o these_o man_n to_o who_o the_o precedency_n be_v give_v die_v or_o be_v remove_v those_o who_o succeed_v in_o their_o office_n and_o power_n to_o the_o same_o regiment_n or_o company_n do_v not_o therefore_o usurpation_n and_o encroachment_n of_o a_o pretend_a infallibility_n but_o yet_o dispute_v they_o do_v and_o attempt_v to_o prove_v their_o doctrine_n from_o scripture_n and_o because_o it_o be_v they_o get_v more_o by_o but_o if_o you_o will_v not_o believe_v this_o till_o they_o produce_v a_o scripture-proof_n of_o it_o you_o may_v let_v they_o dispute_v on_o about_o the_o place_n of_o purgatory_n and_o keep_v your_o money_n in_o your_o pocket_n thus_o it_o be_v in_o most_o other_o case_n if_o you_o take_v their_o whole_a doctrine_n together_o and_o demand_v a_o proof_n of_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o not_o take_v a_o proof_n of_o some_o little_a branch_n of_o it_o for_o a_o proof_n of_o the_o whole_a you_o will_v quick_o find_v that_o they_o will_v not_o be_v so_o fond_a of_o dispute_v as_o some_o of_o they_o now_o be_v 3._o another_o way_n our_o roman_a adversary_n have_v of_o prove_v their_o doctrine_n from_o scripture_n be_v instead_o of_o plain_a and_o positive_a to_o send_v penitent_a sinner_n to_o purgatory_n there_o be_v two_o extravagant_a notion_n whereon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n be_v found_v which_o overthrow_n all_o the_o natural_a notion_n have_v a_o jail_n of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o purgatory_n where_o for_o several_a year_n he_o torment_v those_o who_o he_o pretend_v to_o have_v pardon_v and_o who_o be_v grow_v very_o good_a man_n and_o good_a subject_n and_o need_v no_o correction_n or_o discipline_n i_o believe_v all_o the_o world_n will_v laugh_v at_o those_o who_o shall_v call_v this_o love_n and_o goodness_n pardon_n or_o good_a to_o suffer_v they_o so_o that_o a_o popish_a purgatory_n be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o belief_n of_o god_n great_a love_n and_o goodness_n to_o sinner_n in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o destroy_v the_o hope_n and_o confidence_n of_o sinner_n for_o if_o they_o may_v lie_v in_o purgatory_n for_o some_o thousand_o year_n as_o they_o may_v do_v notwithstanding_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n if_o the_o pope_n or_o the_o priest_n or_o their_o money_n be_v not_o more_o merciful_a unto_o they_o they_o have_v no_o great_a reason_n to_o glory_n much_o in_o for_o sin_n if_o we_o confess_v our_o sin_n to_o a_o priest_n and_o receive_v absolution_n put_v we_o into_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n now_o contrition_n or_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v not_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o therefore_o this_o doctrine_n overthrow_v the_o necessity_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n because_o man_n may_v be_v save_v by_o the_o sacrament_n of_o penance_n without_o it_o and_o then_o i_o know_v no_o necessity_n there_o be_v of_o mortify_v their_o lust_n for_o if_o they_o sin_v again_o it_o be_v only_o repeat_v the_o same_o remedy_n confess_v their_o sin_n and_o be_v sorry_a for_o neck_n etc._n etc._n that_o no_o man_n can_v doubt_v of_o it_o who_o can_v believe_v his_o own_o eye_n and_o read_v their_o office_n and_o see_v what_o the_o daily_a practice_n of_o their_o church_n be_v whoever_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o be_v satisfy_v about_o it_o needs_o only_o read_v dr._n brevint'_v saul_n and_o samuel_n at_o endor_n chap._n 15._o these_o thing_n look_v more_o like_a charm_n than_o christian_n worship_n and_o be_v a_o great_a profanation_n of_o the_o divine_a grace_n and_o spirit_n indeed_o they_o argue_v that_o such_o man_n do_v not_o understand_v what_o grace_n and_o sanctification_n mean_v who_o think_v that_o little_a image_n of_o wax_n that_o candle_n that_o oil_n that_o water_n and_o salt_n that_o bell_n that_o cross_n can_v be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o convey_v grace_n and_o sanctification_n by_o the_o sight_n or_o sound_n or_o touch_v or_o such_o external_a application_n christ_n have_v give_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o dwell_v in_o we_o which_o work_v immediate_o upon_o our_o mind_n and_o rational_a power_n and_o require_v our_o concurrence_n to_o make_v his_o grace_n effectual_a to_o cleanse_v and_o purify_v our_o soul_n sanctification_n to_o we_o by_o some_o divine_a and_o invisible_a effluvium_n of_o grace_n may_v as_o well_o lodge_v reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o will_v and_o passion_n in_o senseless_a matter_n and_o receive_v it_o from_o they_o again_o by_o a_o kiss_n or_o touch_v to_o be_v sure_a man_n who_o know_v what_o the_o sanctification_n of_o the_o spirit_n mean_v must_v despise_v such_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n and_o a_o cloak_n for_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o great_a immorality_n though_o they_o be_v never_o intend_v by_o god_n for_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n for_o such_o external_n rite_n be_v so_o much_o easy_a to_o carnal_a man_n than_o to_o subdue_v their_o lust_n and_o live_v a_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a life_n that_o they_o be_v willing_a to_o abound_v in_o such_o external_n observance_n and_o hope_v that_o these_o will_v make_v expiation_n for_o their_o other_o sin_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o typical_a use_n of_o these_o ceremony_n be_v fulfil_v by_o christ_n the_o external_n rite_n be_v abrogate_a that_o man_n may_v no_o long_o place_v any_o hope_n or_o confidence_n in_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v mere_o external_n and_o fill_v up_o their_o story_n but_o these_o be_v the_o glorious_a accomplishment_n especial_o of_o the_o more_o modern_a saint_n for_o no_o man_n must_v be_v a_o saint_n at_o rome_n who_o be_v not_o a_o famous_a example_n of_o popish_a superstition_n monkery_n be_v think_v the_o most_o perfect_a state_n of_o religion_n among_o they_o and_o have_v even_o monopolise_v the_o name_n for_o no_o other_o person_n be_v call_v the_o religious_a but_o those_o who_o belong_v to_o one_o order_n or_o other_o and_o wherein_o do_v the_o perfection_n of_o monkery_n consist_v 1._o in_o the_o vow_n of_o caelibacy_n poverty_n and_o obedience_n to_o the_o superior_n of_o their_o order_n which_o be_v all_o external_n thing_n no_o virtue_n in_o themselves_o and_o very_o often_o the_o occasion_n of_o great_a wickedness_n 2._o in_o the_o strict_a observance_n of_o the_o external_n rite_n and_o ceremony_n of_o their_o religion_n of_o mass_n and_o ave-maries_n and_o fast_n and_o penance_n and_o many_o of_o they_o will_v be_v glad_a if_o they_o can_v go_v pilgrimage_n too_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o perfection_n in_o their_o monastery_n and_o nunnery_n with_o such_o additional_a superstition_n as_o be_v peculiar_a to_o particular_a order_n as_o for_o other_o true_a christian_a virtue_n they_o may_v as_o soon_o be_v find_v without_o the_o wall_n of_o the_o monastery_n as_o within_o now_o when_o such_o external_n rite_n and_o observance_n shall_v be_v judge_v satisfaction_n and_o expiation_n for_o sin_n shall_v be_v think_v the_o most_o high_o meritorious_a shall_v be_v make_v the_o character_n of_o their_o great_a saint_n and_o the_o most_o perfect_a state_n of_o religion_n i_o can_v see_v how_o any_o true_a thorough-paced_n romanist_n can_v aim_v at_o any_o thing_n but_o a_o ceremonial_a righteousness_n indeed_o the_o true_a reason_n why_o any_o think_v man_n be_v so_o fond_a of_o a_o external_n and_o ceremonial_a righteousness_n be_v to_o excuse_v they_o from_o true_a and_o real_a holiness_n of_o life_n all_o man_n know_v that_o if_o they_o mortify_v their_o lust_n they_o need_v not_o afflict_v their_o body_n with_o fast_n and_o other_o severity_n that_o if_o they_o have_v their_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n they_o need_v not_o travel_v in_o pilgrimage_n to_o jerusalem_n or_o loretto_n that_o if_o they_o take_v care_n to_o obey_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o need_v no_o satisfaction_n for_o their_o sin_n nor_o no_o work_n of_o merit_n or_o supererogation_n which_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o meritorious_a and_o supererogate_a satisfaction_n for_o all_o man_n know_v that_o in_o the_o office_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n they_o can_v never_o do_v more_o than_o be_v their_o duty_n and_o therefore_o as_o nothing_o can_v be_v matter_n of_o merit_n which_o be_v our_o duty_n so_o the_o true_a intention_n of_o all_o merit_n and_o work_v of_o supererogation_n be_v to_o supply_v the_o place_n of_o duty_n and_o to_o satisfy_v for_o their_o sin_n or_o to_o purchase_v a_o reward_n which_o they_o have_v no_o title_n to_o by_o do_v their_o duty_n but_o a_o good_a man_n who_o by_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o obey_v he_o have_v a_o interest_n in_o his_o merit_n and_o a_o title_n to_o the_o gospel-promises_a of_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n needs_o none_o of_o these_o satisfaction_n merit_n or_o supererogation_n now_o will_v any_o man_n who_o believe_v that_o he_o can_v be_v save_v without_o mortify_v his_o lust_n be_v at_o the_o trouble_n of_o whip_n and_o fast_n etc._n etc._n not_o to_o mortify_v his_o lust_n but_o to_o keep_v they_o and_o to_o make_v satisfaction_n for_o they_o will_v any_o man_n travel_n to_o jerusalem_n or_o the_o shrine_n of_o any_o saint_n who_o believe_v he_o shall_v not_o be_v forgive_v unless_o he_o leave_v his_o sin_n behind_o he_o which_o he_o may_v as_o well_o have_v part_v with_o at_o home_n the_o true_a notion_n of_o superstition_n be_v when_o man_n think_v to_o
