bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o another_o sin_n though_o set_v aside_o that_o declaration_n the_o sole_a justice_n of_o god_n will_v oblige_v we_o to_o a_o abhorrence_n of_o all_o such_o surmise_n for_o what_o i_o beseech_v you_o make_v any_o punishment_n just_a that_o be_v inflict_v either_o by_o god_n or_o man_n be_v it_o any_o other_o than_o a_o right_n in_o the_o judge_n to_o punish_v and_o a_o obligation_n in_o the_o criminal_a to_o suffer_v and_o if_o so_o be_v it_o not_o alike_o evident_a that_o it_o can_v be_v no_o way_n consistent_a with_o god_n justice_n to_o make_v one_o man_n bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o another_o sin_n for_o as_o no_o one_o can_v have_v a_o right_a to_o punish_v where_o a_o fault_n do_v not_o precede_v and_o therefore_o neither_o to_o extend_v it_o to_o be_v the_o peculiar_a of_o another_o and_o indeed_o however_o some_o action_n of_o god_n seem_v to_o proclaim_v the_o contrary_a and_o particular_o his_o impute_v to_o we_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n and_o lay_v on_o christ_n the_o iniquity_n of_o we_o all_o yet_o neither_o do_v the_o one_o nor_o the_o other_o contradict_v it_o in_o the_o least_o if_o they_o be_v serious_o and_o wary_o consider_v not_o the_o former_a because_o the_o same_o scripture_n which_o affirm_v that_o god_n impute_v to_o we_o the_o iniquity_n of_o our_o first_o parent_n do_v also_o assure_v we_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v more_o large_o hereafter_o baptism_n hereafter_o explication_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o particular_o of_o that_o of_o baptism_n that_o we_o all_o offend_v manifest_o to_o deter_v man_n from_o those_o crime_n to_o which_o these_o commination_n be_v affix_v to_o make_v those_o commination_n of_o any_o force_n they_o must_v consequent_o be_v think_v to_o bring_v some_o evil_n to_o that_o criminal_a against_o who_o they_o shall_v be_v find_v to_o be_v denounce_v no_o man_n and_o much_o less_o a_o sinful_a one_o be_v like_a to_o be_v reclaim_v by_o those_o evil_n in_o which_o he_o himself_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o great_a share_n from_o whence_o as_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o the_o principal_a design_n of_o the_o almighty_a be_v to_o let_v those_o idolatrous_a person_n know_v that_o he_o mean_v to_o punish_v they_o in_o their_o
child_n so_o it_o may_v not_o obscure_o be_v collect_v from_o god_n extend_v this_o threat_n of_o his_o no_o further_o than_o to_o the_o three_o and_o four_o generation_n those_o be_v generation_n which_o the_o parent_n may_v live_v to_o see_v and_o therein_o their_o own_o bowel_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v those_o that_o descend_v from_o our_o loin_n torture_v for_o their_o impiety_n against_o their_o maker_n though_o suppose_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o yet_o if_o they_o have_v any_o thing_n of_o natural_a affection_n in_o they_o they_o very_a thought_n that_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o their_o posterity_n can_v but_o stagger_v they_o in_o their_o impiety_n how_o strong_o soever_o they_o may_v be_v tempt_v to_o it_o it_o be_v not_o a_o little_a evil_n to_o die_v with_o a_o apprehension_n of_o our_o posterity_n become_v miserable_a through_o our_o procurement_n now_o though_o this_o be_v true_a and_o in_o part_n also_o satisfactory_a because_o the_o punishment_n be_v proper_o the_o parent_n the_o calamity_n of_o the_o child_n be_v make_v use_n of_o only_a to_o punish_v the_o parent_n by_o yet_o because_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o such_o infliction_n can_v happen_v but_o by_o the_o calamity_n of_o the_o child_n as_o it_o be_v no_o less_o from_o the_o phrase_n of_o god_n visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n upon_o the_o child_n that_o the_o calamity_n of_o the_o child_n must_v happen_v by_o the_o procurement_n of_o the_o parent_n therefore_o to_o show_v the_o full_a importance_n of_o this_o commination_n of_o the_o almighty_a as_o well_o as_o its_o freedom_n from_o involve_v the_o child_n in_o the_o punishment_n of_o the_o parent_n sin_n it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o affirm_v in_o the_o second_o place_n that_o when_o he_o threaten_v to_o visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n upon_o the_o child_n his_o meaning_n be_v not_o only_o that_o god_n will_v punish_v the_o father_n in_o they_o but_o that_o in_o order_n to_o that_o end_n he_o will_v make_v the_o child_n miserable_a and_o that_o too_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o the_o father_n impiety_n but_o yet_o so_o that_o if_o those_o child_n tread_v not_o in_o their_o father_n step_n they_o shall_v be_v free_a from_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o of_o which_o there_o be_v a_o sufficient_a presumption_n from_o ezek._n 18.14_o and_o so_o on_o or_o that_o that_o calamity_n of_o the_o child_n shall_v turn_v to_o their_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a advantage_n for_o so_o st._n paul_n tell_v we_o that_o all_o thing_n shall_v to_o they_o that_o love_n god_n rom._n 8.28_o or_o that_o if_o the_o child_n tread_v in_o their_o father_n step_n or_o be_v any_o other_o way_n irreligious_a yet_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v punish_v even_o by_o occasion_n of_o their_o father_n sin_n but_o for_o their_o own_o and_o according_a to_o the_o demerit_n of_o they_o which_o will_v at_o the_o same_o time_n both_o show_v how_o god_n visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n upon_o the_o child_n and_o how_o far_o that_o visitation_n of_o he_o be_v from_o make_v the_o child_n bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o father_n sin_n a_o familiar_a instance_n will_v clear_v my_o sense_n in_o the_o second_o of_o the_o particular_n beforementioned_a and_o together_o with_o it_o the_o uprightness_n of_o god_n proceed_n for_o let_v we_o suppose_v as_o we_o very_o well_o may_v have_v oftentimes_o observe_v it_o let_v we_o suppose_v i_o say_v a_o fond_a mother_n punish_v in_o the_o sickliness_n of_o that_o son_n towards_o who_o she_o have_v show_v a_o immoderate_a affection_n her_o love_n to_o he_o transport_v she_o into_o the_o neglect_n of_o she_o other_o child_n or_o any_o other_o sinful_a action_n here_o i_o say_v it_o be_v manifest_a suppose_v the_o child_n also_o to_o be_v pious_a and_o no_o way_n to_o desire_v or_o approve_v of_o such_o a_o unreasonable_a fondness_n that_o the_o child_n become_v miserable_a by_o the_o procurement_n of_o the_o mother_n or_o if_o you_o have_v rather_o i_o shall_v speak_v in_o the_o language_n of_o moses_n here_o that_o her_o iniquity_n be_v visit_v upon_o he_o but_o yet_o so_o that_o that_o calamity_n of_o the_o child_n be_v in_o respect_n of_o he_o no_o punishment_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a a_o signal_n advantage_n god_n almighty_a have_v promise_v that_o all_o thing_n shall_v work_v together_o for_o good_a to_o they_o that_o love_v he_o and_o if_o so_o this_o calamity_n also_o by_o mean_n of_o which_o at_o the_o same_o time_n he_o punish_v the_o mother_n yet_o he_o only_o afflict_v the_o in_o their_o step_n or_o at_o least_o be_v irreligious_a another_o way_n in_o which_o case_n the_o calamity_n inflict_v can_v but_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o a_o punishment_n yea_o even_o to_o that_o child_n on_o who_o it_o be_v so_o yet_o even_o so_o a_o way_n may_v be_v find_v out_o to_o verify_v god_n threat_n of_o visit_v the_o iniquity_n of_o the_o father_n upon_o the_o child_n without_o grant_v they_o to_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n of_o their_o parent_n sin_n for_o as_o that_o threat_n can_v no_o way_n be_v verify_v without_o affirm_v the_o punishment_n of_o the_o child_n to_o
