loathsome_a to_o these_o holy_a parent_n it_o vex_v the_o righteous_a soul_n of_o lot_n to_o see_v and_o hear_v the_o filthy_a conversation_n of_o the_o beastly_a sodomite_n how_o grievous_a then_o must_v it_o be_v to_o these_o godly_a parent_n to_o see_v and_o hear_v the_o filthiness_n of_o their_o own_o dear_a child_n it_o be_v a_o grievous_a thing_n to_o a_o man_n that_o love_v god_n and_o godliness_n and_o soul_n to_o see_v a_o drunkard_n stagger_v in_o the_o street_n or_o to_o hear_v any_o man_n blaspheme_v and_o reproach_v his_o maker_n and_o redeemer_n but_o none_o can_v tell_v but_o those_o that_o feel_v it_o what_o a_o sad_a spectacle_n it_o be_v to_o sober_a and_o godly_a parent_n to_o see_v their_o own_o child_n drink_v or_o how_o it_o torment_v they_o to_o hear_v their_o own_o child_n lie_v and_o blaspheme_a god_n and_o his_o saint_n 2._o that_o their_o child_n be_v the_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o under_o the_o power_n of_o satan_n and_o ride_v by_o he_o and_o carry_v captive_a by_o he_o at_o his_o will_n it_o be_v a_o lamentable_a case_n of_o that_o good_a mother_n who_o come_v to_o christ_n say_v matth._n 15.22_o have_v mercy_n upon_o i_o o_o lord_n thou_o son_n of_o david_n my_o daughter_n be_v grievous_o vex_v with_o a_o devil_n yet_o this_o be_v not_o her_o daughter_n sin_n but_o only_o her_o great_a affliction_n but_o how_o doleful_a be_v it_o to_o these_o parent_n who_o have_v renounce_v the_o devil_n themselves_o and_o live_v in_o continual_a warfare_n with_o he_o to_o see_v the_o heart_n and_o mouth_n and_o life_n of_o the_o child_n who_o they_o have_v devote_v to_o god_n fill_v and_o possess_v with_o the_o devil_n who_o child_n they_o be_v and_o who_o lust_n they_o will_v do_v if_o the_o devil_n tempt_v the_o parent_n their_o own_o grace_n will_v resist_v and_o overcome_v his_o temptation_n but_o they_o can_v secure_v their_o child_n from_o be_v overcome_v and_o from_o fall_v into_o the_o condemnation_n of_o the_o devil_n but_o with_o sad_a heart_n do_v see_v the_o lion_n of_o hell_n run_v away_o with_o the_o lamb_n of_o their_o flock_n and_o can_v recover_v they_o 3._o that_o their_o child_n be_v under_o the_o moment_n ready_a to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o live_a god_n when_o such_o parent_n be_v with_o faith_n read_v the_o curse_n of_o god_n law_n how_o do_v it_o cut_v they_o to_o the_o heart_n to_o think_v that_o they_o be_v then_o read_v their_o child_n doom_n 4._o that_o their_o child_n be_v under_o those_o black_a character_n which_o be_v give_v in_o scripture_n to_o ungodly_a man_n for_o the_o faith_n of_o these_o parent_n make_v all_o person_n have_v that_o name_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o they_o have_v in_o the_o word_n and_o as_o god_n be_v no_o respecter_n of_o person_n so_o faith_n so_o far_o as_o it_o prevail_v respect_v not_o the_o person_n of_o any_o no_o not_o of_o a_o man_n own_o child_n but_o because_o they_o be_v more_o under_o their_o notice_n and_o observation_n than_o other_o and_o because_o they_o be_v more_o concern_v for_o they_o therefore_o the_o deep_a impression_n do_v these_o character_n make_v on_o their_o heart_n so_o that_o this_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o these_o parent_n that_o while_o they_o look_v on_o person_n through_o the_o glass_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o see_v many_o to_o be_v the_o
be_v say_v before_o they_o can_v be_v so_o much_o the_o joy_n and_o delight_n of_o one_o another_o but_o when_o they_o lie_v down_o this_o make_v they_o water_v their_o bed_n with_o tear_n and_o they_o awake_v with_o sorrow_n with_o a_o wicked_a child_n on_o their_o heart_n 2._o they_o can_v take_v so_o much_o comfort_n as_o they_o will_v in_o the_o other_o child_n that_o be_v godly_a not_o that_o they_o love_v they_o less_o but_o rather_o more_o but_o their_o joy_n in_o they_o be_v much_o interrupt_v hereby_o suppose_v among_o many_o child_n there_o be_v but_o one_o ungodly_a child_n that_o one_o be_v a_o disturbance_n and_o annoyance_n to_o the_o whole_a family_n that_o one_o sinner_n as_o solomon_n speak_v in_o a_o more_o general_a case_n destroy_v much_o good_a it_o grieve_v they_o to_o think_v that_o whereas_o that_o one_o child_n be_v in_o the_o same_o covenant_n and_o have_v the_o same_o dedication_n to_o god_n by_o baptism_n and_o the_o same_o affection_n and_o education_n from_o the_o parent_n with_o all_o the_o other_o child_n yet_o the_o rest_n be_v vessel_n of_o mercy_n but_o this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o vessel_n of_o wrath_n 3._o they_o can_v take_v so_o much_o comfort_n in_o the_o victory_n over_o their_o own_o sin_n when_o they_o see_v the_o same_o corruption_n which_o be_v abhor_v and_o mortify_v and_o forsake_v by_o the_o parent_n break_v out_o and_o reign_v in_o the_o child_n 4._o this_o interrupt_v their_o joy_n in_o god_n and_o jesus_n christ_n when_o such_o parent_n must_v with_o the_o same_o faith_n believe_v god_n wrath_n to_o their_o they_o starve_v their_o poor_a parent_n so_o that_o they_o can_v feed_v their_o own_o lust_n and_o it_o be_v often_o see_v that_o a_o plentiful_a estate_n be_v consume_v by_o riotous_a child_n 2._o such_o child_n do_v often_o debauch_v and_o corrupt_v the_o other_o child_n and_o make_v their_o brethren_n in_o nature_n to_o be_v their_o brethren_n in_o iniquity_n and_o often_o their_o brother_n and_o sister_n be_v easy_a entice_v to_o sin_n by_o a_o wicked_a brother_n than_o draw_v to_o god_n by_o a_o godly_a father_n and_o if_o any_o of_o the_o other_o child_n be_v godly_a these_o wicked_a one_o do_v hate_n and_o revile_v and_o persecute_v they_o like_o wicked_a cain_n who_o slay_v his_o brother_n because_o his_o work_n be_v righteous_a 3._o they_o bring_v reproach_n upon_o that_o good_a religion_n which_o their_o good_a parent_n profess_v and_o practice_v and_o thus_o eli_n son_n make_v man_n abhor_v the_o offering_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o with_o some_o the_o holy_a life_n of_o the_o parent_n can_v wipe_v off_o the_o reproach_n which_o be_v cast_v on_o religion_n by_o the_o wickedness_n of_o their_o child_n seven_o the_o greatness_n of_o this_o affliction_n appear_v by_o these_o eight_o aggravation_n of_o it_o 1._o it_o aggravate_v their_o grief_n to_o remember_v what_o pleasure_n and_o delight_v these_o child_n be_v to_o they_o in_o their_o childhood_n it_o torment_v they_o now_o to_o see_v their_o sweet_a and_o pleasant_a smile_n turn_v into_o scornful_a and_o disdainful_a look_n at_o their_o parent_n and_o their_o pretty_a break_a word_n turn_v into_o oath_n and_o lie_n and_o other_o rot_a speech_n and_o to_o think_v that_o these_o who_o once_o be_v so_o forward_o to_o clasp_v about_o their_o neck_n and_o to_o kiss_v they_o and_o to_o run_v at_o their_o command_n do_v now_o lift_v up_o the_o heel_n against_o they_o 2._o it_o aggravate_v their_o sorrow_n to_o see_v themselves_o so_o miserable_o disappoint_v in_o their_o former_a hope_n of_o these_o child_n hope_v defer_v say_v solomon_n make_v the_o heart_n sick_a but_o to_o be_v cross_v and_o disappoint_v in_o hope_n of_o so_o great_a mercy_n do_v even_o break_v the_o heart_n when_o these_o parent_n remember_v how_o pleasant_a it_o be_v to_o they_o to_o hear_v these_o child_n lisp_v out_o their_o catechism_n and_o to_o hear_v their_o good_a word_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n it_o can_v but_o be_v very_o grievous_a to_o they_o that_o the_o same_o child_n which_o they_o do_v with_o hannah_n lend_v to_o the_o lord_n shall_v sell_v themselves_o to_o the_o devil_n 3._o it_o aggravate_v their_o sorrow_n that_o their_o child_n be_v so_o void_a of_o love_n to_o their_o parent_n and_o to_o see_v that_o the_o company_n of_o liar_n and_o drunkard_n and_o whoremonger_n and_o thief_n be_v more_o delightful_a to_o they_o than_o the_o company_n of_o their_o parent_n 4._o it_o aggravate_v their_o sorrow_n to_o look_v upon_o the_o holy_a child_n of_o other_o when_o they_o may_v say_v yonder_o be_v child_n that_o make_v a_o glad_a father_n and_o mother_n when_o the_o child_n of_o our_o body_n and_o counsel_n and_o prayer_n and_o vow_n and_o tear_n live_v as_o if_o their_o father_n be_v a_o amorite_n and_o their_o mother_n a_o hittite_n 5._o aggravation_n be_v in_o case_n the_o parent_n have_v but_o one_o child_n and_o that_o prove_v foolish_a and_o disobedient_a and_o of_o this_o there_o be_v many_o instance_n the_o scripture_n to_o set_v forth_o the_o sad_a kind_n of_o mourning_n compare_v it_o to_o the_o mourning_n for_o a_o only_a son_n jer._n 6.26_o make_v thou_o mourning_n as_o for_o a_o only_a son_n most_o bitter_a lamentation_n zech._n 12.10_o they_o shall_v mourn_v as_o one_o that_o mourn_v for_o a_o only_a son_n i_o know_v these_o scripture_n speak_v of_o parent_n mourn_v for_o the_o death_n of_o a_o only_a son_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o sad_a to_o follow_v a_o only_a son_n to_o the_o grave_n as_o to_o see_v a_o only_a child_n live_v to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n to_o be_v a_o curse_n to_o his_o generation_n and_o to_o be_v continual_o destroy_v his_o precious_a soul_n it_o be_v a_o very_a bitter_a case_n when_o as_o much_o love_n and_o kindness_n and_o care_n and_o cost_n and_o pain_n and_o prayer_n and_o fasting_n be_v bestow_v upon_o one_o child_n as_o other_o parent_n bestow_v upon_o many_o child_n and_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o one_o child_n shall_v prove_v such_o a_o monster_n of_o wickedness_n as_o if_o the_o sin_n of_o many_o ungodly_a child_n meet_v in_o he_o 6._o aggravation_n when_o god_n holy_a minister_n be_v the_o father_n of_o fool_n which_o i_o have_v tell_v you_o often_o happen_v and_o this_o be_v a_o most_o dreadful_a case_n for_o such_o who_o have_v the_o key_n of_o the_o multitude_n that_o have_v the_o scripture_n and_o ordinance_n despise_v the_o same_o christ_n and_o the_o same_o gospel_n as_o thy_o child_n do_v and_o why_o shall_v thou_o be_v more_o concern_v for_o one_o or_o more_o of_o thy_o wicked_a child_n than_o for_o the_o whole_a world_n that_o lie_v in_o wickedness_n 5._o let_v your_o sorrow_n be_v guide_v by_o scripture_n and_o reason_n that_o you_o and_o he_o never_o make_v it_o our_o duty_n by_o sorrow_n for_o either_o to_o destroy_v our_o body_n which_o be_v the_o temple_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v that_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o never_o hurt_v the_o body_n for_o grace_n be_v always_o a_o friend_n and_o never_o a_o enemy_n to_o nature_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o deprive_v thyself_o of_o all_o opportunity_n to_o honour_n god_n and_o serve_v his_o church_n do_v not_o make_v thy_o yoke-fellow_n desolate_a nor_o thy_o child_n orphan_n by_o such_o sorrow_n that_o will_v neither_o please_v god_n nor_o ease_v thyself_o nor_o do_v any_o good_a to_o thy_o wicked_a and_o miserable_a child_n 6._o labour_v to_o get_v your_o grace_n strengthen_v under_o this_o great_a affliction_n for_o you_o have_v need_n of_o more_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n and_o faith_n and_o hope_v and_o love_n and_o meekness_n and_o patience_n to_o enable_v and_o fit_v you_o to_o bear_v this_o than_o most_o other_o affection_n and_o you_o must_v see_v and_o enjoy_v more_o of_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o keep_v up_o your_o heart_n under_o this_o than_o under_o most_o other_o trouble_n and_o sense_n of_o the_o infinite_a love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n to_o a_o man_n self_n and_o of_o that_o holy_a and_o glorious_a eternity_n which_o this_o love_n will_v short_o bring_v he_o unto_o to_o tell_v you_o that_o this_o be_v and_o have_v be_v the_o case_n of_o other_o godly_a parent_n may_v allay_v something_o of_o your_o grief_n but_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o tell_v you_o that_o other_o be_v and_o have_v be_v as_o miserable_a as_o you_o or_o to_o tell_v you_o that_o as_o wicked_a child_n as_o you_o have_v be_v sanctify_v and_o save_v yield_v some_o hope_n but_o it_o can_v amount_v to_o no_o more_o than_o to_o think_v they_o may_v be_v save_v or_o thy_o may_v be_v damn_v and_o there_o be_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o fear_v the_o one_o as_o to_o hope_v for_o the_o other_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o see_v a_o gainful_a death_n ready_a to_o loose_v he_o into_o that_o world_n where_o there_o be_v none_o of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o to_o know_v that_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n his_o wicked_a child_n will_v be_v no_o more_o to_o he_o than_o bloody_a bonner_n or_o gardiner_n or_o damn_a devil_n and_o that_o he_o himself_o shall_v sit_v with_o christ_n to_o judge_v they_o and_o that_o he_o shall_v love_v and_o delight_n in_o the_o holiness_n and_o justice_n of_o the_o judge_n of_o all_o the_o world_n in_o pass_v that_o sentence_n upon_o they_o depart_v you_o brute_n to_o defend_v and_o keep_v their_o own_o young_a so_o nature_n itself_o teach_v and_o incline_v parent_n to_o defend_v and_o preserve_v and_o provide_v for_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o own_o body_n and_o for_o this_o end_n to_o supply_v they_o with_o food_n raiment_n and_o physic_n and_o to_o fit_v they_o for_o calling_n and_o seasonable_o to_o provide_v for_o they_o meet_v yokefellow_n and_o every_o way_n to_o take_v care_n that_o they_o neither_o perish_v or_o be_v make_v miserable_a but_o godly_a parent_n in_o who_o natural_a affection_n be_v sanctify_v and_o improve_v by_o bitterness_n and_o sorrow_n of_o his_o wife_n and_o the_o good_a mother_n be_v not_o only_o trouble_v with_o the_o wicked_a child_n but_o also_o for_o the_o grief_n of_o her_o husband_n the_o mother_n heart_n bleed_v to_o see_v the_o tear_n and_o to_o hear_v the_o groan_n of_o the_o afflict_a father_n and_o cry_v out_o oh_o what_o a_o child_n have_v i_o bring_v forth_o that_o so_o much_o deprive_v i_o of_o the_o comfort_n of_o a_o love_a husband_n and_o be_v like_a to_o break_v his_o heart_n and_o to_o make_v i_o a_o desolate_a and_o disconsolate_a widow_n the_o father_n mourn_v to_o see_v that_o their_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v set_v to_o comply_v with_o all_o and_o that_o they_o have_v provoke_v god_n to_o give_v they_o up_o to_o their_o own_o lust_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v in_o continual_a fear_n lest_o these_o poor_a child_n be_v lie_v or_o swear_v or_o curse_v or_o whore_v or_o drink_v and_o defile_v and_o debauch_v and_o destroy_v themselves_o and_o other_o 2._o they_o
