give_v god_n not_o the_o least_o service_n in_o which_o the_o devil_n have_v not_o a_o large_a share_n and_o if_o their_o prayer_n and_o all_o their_o spiritual_a performance_n be_v sinful_a the_o devil_n be_v as_o much_o serve_v by_o they_o in_o these_o as_o god_n and_o in_o most_o of_o they_o much_o more_o since_o they_o confess_v that_o many_o of_o they_o be_v perform_v without_o the_o leading_n and_o influence_n of_o god_n spirit_n now_o who_o will_v not_o account_v he_o a_o foolish_a master_n among_o man_n who_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o and_o also_o desirous_a that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o yet_o will_v not_o provide_v away_o whereby_o his_o child_n and_o servant_n may_v serve_v he_o more_o entire_o than_o his_o avow_v enemy_n or_o will_v not_o guard_v against_o their_o serve_v of_o he_o but_o be_v so_o imprudent_a and_o unadvised_a in_o his_o contrivance_n that_o whatever_o way_n his_o servant_n and_o child_n serve_v he_o they_o shall_v no_o less_o yea_o often_o much_o more_o serve_v his_o enemy_n what_o may_v we_o then_o think_v of_o that_o doctrine_n that_o will_v infer_v this_o folly_n upon_o the_o omnipotent_a and_o only_a wise_a god._n §_o iu._n second_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n for_o since_o he_o require_v purity_n from_o his_o child_n and_o command_v they_o to_o abstain_v from_o every_o iniquity_n so_o frequent_o and_o precise_o as_o shall_v hereafter_o appear_v and_o since_o his_o wrath_n be_v reveal_v against_o all_o ungodliness_n and_o unrighteousness_n of_o man_n it_o must_v needs_o follow_v that_o he_o have_v capacitate_v man_n to_o answer_v his_o will_n or_o else_o that_o he_o require_v more_o than_o he_o have_v give_v power_n to_o perform_v which_o be_v to_o declare_v he_o open_o unjust_a and_o with_o the_o slothful_a servant_n to_o be_v a_o hard_a master_n we_o have_v elsewhere_o speak_v of_o the_o injustice_n these_o man_n ascribe_v to_o god_n in_o make_v he_o to_o damn_v the_o wicked_a to_o who_o they_o allege_v he_o never_o offer_v any_o mean_n of_o be_v good_a but_o this_o be_v yet_o a_o aggravation_n more_o irrational_a and_o inconsistent_a to_o say_v that_o god_n will_v not_o afford_v to_o those_o who_o he_o have_v choose_v to_o be_v his_o own_o who_o they_o confess_v he_o love_v the_o mean_n to_o please_v he_o what_o can_v follow_v then_o from_o so_o strange_a a_o doctrine_n this_o imperfection_n in_o the_o saint_n either_o proceed_v from_o god_n or_o from_o themselves_o if_o it_o proceed_v from_o they_o it_o must_v be_v because_o they_o be_v short_a in_o improve_n or_o make_v use_n of_o the_o power_n give_v they_o whereby_o they_o be_v capable_a to_o obey_v and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n possible_a to_o they_o as_o indeed_o it_o be_v by_o the_o help_n of_o that_o power_n but_o this_o our_o adversary_n deny_v they_o be_v then_o not_o to_o be_v blame_v for_o their_o imperfection_n and_o continue_v in_o sin_n since_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o they_o to_o do_v otherwise_o if_o it_o be_v not_o of_o themselves_o it_o must_v be_v of_o god_n who_o have_v not_o see_v meet_v to_o allow_v they_o grace_n in_o that_o degree_n to_o produce_v that_o effect_n and_o what_o be_v this_o but_o to_o attribute_v to_o god_n the_o height_n of_o injustice_n to_o make_v he_o require_v his_o child_n to_o forsake_v sin_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o afford_v they_o sufficient_a mean_n for_o so_o do_v sure_o this_o make_v god_n more_o unrighteous_a than_o wicked_a man_n who_o if_o as_o christ_n say_v their_o child_n require_v bread_n of_o they_o will_v not_o give_v they_o a_o stone_n or_o instead_o of_o fish_n a_o serpent_n but_o these_o man_n confess_v we_o ought_v to_o seek_v of_o god_n power_n to_o redeem_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o yet_o believe_v they_o be_v never_o to_o receive_v such_o a_o power_n such_o prayer_n than_o can_v be_v in_o faith_n but_o be_v all_o vain_a be_v not_o this_o to_o make_v god_n as_o unjust_a to_o his_o child_n as_o pharaoh_n be_v to_o the_o israelite_n in_o require_v brick_n and_o not_o give_v they_o straw_n but_o bless_v be_v god_n he_o deal_v not_o so_o with_o those_o that_o true_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o wait_v upon_o he_o as_o these_o man_n vain_o imagine_v for_o such_o faithful_a one_o find_v of_o a_o truth_n that_o his_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o they_o and_o know_v how_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n to_o overcome_v the_o evil_a one_o §_o v._o three_o this_o evil_a doctrine_n be_v high_o injurious_a to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o great_o denegate_n from_o the_o power_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n and_o render_v his_o come_n and_o ministry_n as_o to_o the_o great_a end_n of_o it_o ineffectual_a for_o christ_n as_o for_o other_o end_n so_o principal_o he_o appear_v for_o the_o remove_n of_o sin_n for_o gather_v a_o righteous_a generation_n that_o may_v serve_v the_o lord_n in_o purity_n of_o mind_n and_o walk_v before_o he_o in_o fear_n and_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a righteousness_n and_o that_o evangelick_n perfection_n which_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v hence_o he_o be_v say_v tit._n 2.14_o to_o have_v give_v himself_o for_o we_o that_o he_o may_v redeem_v we_o from_o all_o iniquity_n and_o purify_v unto_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n zealous_a of_o good_a work_n this_o be_v certain_o speak_v of_o the_o saint_n while_o upon_o earth_n but_o contrary_a thereunto_o these_o man_n affirm_v that_o we_o be_v never_o redeem_v from_o all_o iniquity_n and_o so_o make_v christ_n give_v of_o himself_o for_o we_o void_a and_o ineffectual_a and_o give_v the_o apostle_n paul_n the_o lie_n plain_o by_o deny_v that_o christ_n purify_v to_o himself_o a_o peculiar_a people_n zealous_a of_o good_a work_n how_o be_v they_o zealous_a of_o good_a work_n who_o be_v ever_o commit_v evil_a one_o how_o be_v they_o a_o purify_a people_n that_o be_v still_o in_o impurity_n as_o be_v they_o that_o daily_a sin_n unless_o sin_n be_v account_v no_o impurity_n moreover_o it_o be_v say_v express_o 1_o joh._n 3.5_o 8._o that_o for_o this_o purpose_n the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v manifest_v that_o he_o may_v destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o you_o know_v that_o he_o be_v manifest_v to_o take_v away_o our_o sin_n but_o these_o man_n make_v this_o purpose_n of_o none_o effect_n for_o they_o will_v not_o have_v the_o son_n of_o god_n to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n in_o his_o child_n in_o this_o world_n neither_o will_v they_o at_o all_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v manifest_a to_o take_v away_o our_o sin_n see_v they_o plead_v a_o necessity_n of_o always_o live_v in_o they_o and_o lest_o any_o shall_v wrest_v this_o place_n of_o the_o apostle_n as_o if_o it_o be_v speak_v only_o of_o take_v away_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n as_o if_o it_o relate_v not_o to_o this_o life_n the_o apostle_n as_o of_o purpose_n to_o obviate_v such_o a_o objection_n add_v in_o the_o two_o follow_a verse_n whosoever_o into_o righteousness_n out_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o satan_n into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o the_o dear_a son_n of_o god_n and_o be_v not_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o gather_v by_o he_o his_o servant_n his_o child_n his_o brethren_n his_o friend_n who_o as_o he_o be_v so_o be_v they_o to_o be_v in_o this_o world_n holy_a pure_a and_o undefiled_a and_o do_v not_o christ_n still_o watch_v over_o they_o stand_v by_o they_o pray_v for_o they_o preserve_v they_o by_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n walk_v in_o they_o and_o dwell_v among_o they_o even_o as_o the_o devil_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n do_v among_o the_o reprobate_a one_o how_o come_v it_o then_o that_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n be_v less_o his_o servant_n than_o the_o devil_n be_v he_o or_o be_v christ_n unwilling_a to_o have_v his_o servant_n thorough_o pure_a which_o be_v gross_a blasphemy_n to_o assert_v contrary_a to_o many_o scripture_n or_o be_v he_o not_o able_a by_o his_o power_n to_o preserve_v and_o enable_v his_o child_n to_o serve_v he_o which_o be_v no_o less_o blasphemous_a to_o affirm_v of_o he_o concern_v who_o the_o scripture_n declare_v that_o he_o have_v overcome_v sin_n death_n hell_n and_o the_o grave_a and_o triumph_v over_o they_o open_o and_o that_o all_o power_n in_o heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v give_v to_o he_o but_o certain_o if_o the_o saint_n sin_n daily_o in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n as_o these_o man_n assert_v they_o serve_v the_o devil_n daily_o and_o be_v subject_a to_o his_o power_n and_o so_o he_o prevail_v more_o than_o christ_n do_v and_o hold_v the_o servant_n of_o christ_n in_o bondage_n whether_o christ_n will_v or_o not_o but_o how_o great_o then_o do_v it_o contradict_v the_o end_n of_o christ_n come_n as_o it_o be_v express_v by_o the_o apostle_n eph._n 5.25_o 26_o 27._o even_o as_o christ_n also_o love_v the_o church_n and_o give_v himself_o for_o it_o that_o he_o may_v sanctify_v and_o cleanse_v it_o with_o the_o wash_n of_o water_n by_o the_o word_n that_o he_o may_v present_v it_o to_o himself_o a_o glorious_a church_n not_o have_v spot_n or_o wrinkle_n or_o any_o such_o thing_n but_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v holy_a and_o without_o blemish_n now_o if_o christ_n have_v real_o thus_o answer_v the_o thing_n he_o come_v for_o than_o the_o member_n of_o this_o church_n be_v not_o always_o sin_v in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed._n or_o there_o be_v no_o difference_n betwixt_o be_v sanctify_a and_o unsanctified_a clean_a and_o unclean_a holy_a and_o unholy_a be_v daily_o blemish_v with_o sin_n and_o be_v without_o blemish_n §_o vi_o four_o this_o doctrine_n render_v the_o work_n of_o the_o ministry_n the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n the_o write_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o holy_a man_n altogether_o useless_a and_o ineffectual_a as_o to_o the_o first_o eph._n 4.11_o pastor_n and_o teacher_n be_v say_v to_o be_v give_v for_o the_o perfection_n of_o the_o saint_n etc._n etc._n till_o we_o all_o come_v in_o the_o unity_n of_o the_o faith_n and_o of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n unto_o a_o perfect_a man_n unto_o a_o measure_n of_o the_o stature_n of_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ._n now_o if_o there_o be_v a_o necessity_n of_o sin_v daily_o and_o in_o all_o thing_n than_o there_o can_v be_v no_o perfection_n for_o such_o as_o do_v so_o can_v be_v esteem_v perfect_a and_o if_o for_o effectuate_a this_o perfection_n in_o the_o saint_n the_o ministry_n be_v appoint_v and_o dispose_v of_o god_n do_v not_o such_o as_o deny_v the_o possibility_n hereof_o render_v the_o ministry_n useless_a and_o of_o no_o profit_n see_v there_o can_v be_v no_o other_o true_a use_n assign_v but_o to_o lead_v people_n out_o of_o sin_n into_o righteousness_n if_o so_o be_v these_o minister_n assure_v we_o that_o we_o need_v never_o expect_v to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o do_v not_o they_o render_v their_o own_o work_n needless_a what_o needs_o preach_v against_o sin_n for_o the_o reprove_v of_o which_o all_o preach_a be_v if_o it_o can_v never_o be_v forsake_v our_o adversary_n be_v exalter_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o word_n much_o cry_v up_o their_o usefulness_n and_o perfection_n now_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o 2_o tim._n 3.17_o that_o the_o scripture_n be_v for_o make_v the_o man_n of_o god_n perfect_a and_o if_o this_o be_v deny_v to_o be_v attainable_a in_o this_o life_n than_o the_o scripture_n be_v of_o no_o profit_n for_o in_o the_o other_o life_n we_o shall_v not_o have_v use_n for_o they_o it_o render_v the_o prayer_n of_o the_o saint_n altogether_o useless_a see_v themselves_o do_v confess_v they_o ought_v to_o pray_v daily_o that_o god_n will_v deliver_v they_o from_o evil_a and_o free_v they_o from_o sin_n by_o the_o help_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o grace_n while_o in_o this_o world_n but_o though_o we_o may_v suppose_v this_o absurdity_n to_o follow_v that_o their_o prayer_n be_v without_o faith_n yet_o be_v not_o that_o so_o much_o if_o it_o do_v not_o infer_v the_o like_a upon_o the_o holy_a apostle_n who_o pray_v earnest_o for_o this_o end_n and_o therefore_o no_o doubt_n believe_v it_o attainable_a col._n 4.12_o labour_v fervent_o for_o you_o in_o prayer_n that_o you_o may_v stand_v perfect_a etc._n etc._n 1_o thes._n 3.13_o &_o 5.23_o etc._n etc._n §_o vii_o but_o five_o this_o doctrine_n be_v contrary_a to_o common_a reason_n and_o sense_n for_o the_o two_o opposite_a principle_n whereof_o the_o one_o rule_n in_o the_o child_n of_o darkness_n the_o other_o in_o the_o child_n of_o light_n be_v sin_n and_o righteousness_n and_o as_o they_o be_v respective_o leaven_v and_o act_v by_o they_o so_o they_o be_v account_v either_o as_o reprobated_a or_o justify_v see_v it_o be_v abomination_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n either_o to_o justify_v the_o wicked_a or_o condemn_v the_o just._n now_o to_o say_v that_o man_n can_v be_v so_o leaven_v with_o the_o one_o as_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o other_o be_v in_o plain_a word_n to_o affirm_v that_o sin_n and_o righteousness_n be_v consistent_a and_o that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v true_o term_v righteous_a though_o he_o be_v daily_o sin_v in_o every_o thing_n he_o do_v and_o then_o what_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a be_v not_o this_o to_o fall_v into_o that_o great_a abomination_n of_o put_v light_n for_o darkness_n and_o call_v good_a evil_n and_o evil_a good_a since_o they_o say_v the_o very_o best_a action_n of_o god_n child_n be_v defile_v and_o pollute_v and_o that_o those_o that_o sin_n daily_o in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n be_v good_a man_n and_o woman_n the_o saint_n and_o holy_a servant_n of_o the_o holy_a pure_a god_n can_v there_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o repugnant_a than_o this_o to_o common_a reason_n since_o the_o subject_n be_v still_o denominate_v from_o that_o accident_n that_o do_v most_o influence_n it_o as_o a_o wall_n be_v call_v white_a when_o there_o be_v much_o whiteness_n and_o black_a when_o there_o be_v much_o blackness_n and_o such_o like_a but_o when_o there_o be_v more_o unrighteousness_n in_o a_o man_n than_o righteousness_n that_o man_n ought_v rather_o to_o be_v denominate_v unrighteous_a than_o righteous_a then_o sure_o if_o every_o man_n sin_n daily_o in_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n and_o that_o in_o his_o sin_n there_o be_v no_o righteousness_n at_o all_o and_o that_o all_o his_o righteous_a action_n be_v pollute_v and_o mix_v with_o sin_n than_o there_o be_v in_o every_o man_n more_o unrighteousness_n than_o righteousness_n and_o so_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v call_v righteous_a no_o man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v sanctify_v or_o wash_v where_o be_v then_o the_o child_n of_o god_n where_o be_v the_o purify_a one_o where_o be_v they_o who_o be_v sometime_o unholy_a but_o now_o holy_a that_o sometime_o be_v darkness_n but_o now_o be_v light_a in_o the_o lord_n there_o can_v none_o such_o be_v find_v then_o at_o this_o rate_n except_o that_o unrighteousness_n be_v esteem_v so_o and_o be_v not_o this_o to_o fall_v into_o that_o abomination_n above_o mention_v of_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a this_o certain_o land_n in_o that_o horrid_a blasphemy_n of_o the_o ranter_n that_o affirm_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_n and_o that_o all_o be_v one_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n i_o can_v show_v many_o more_o gross_a absurdity_n evil_a consequence_n and_o manifest_a contradiction_n ply_v in_o this_o sinful_a doctrine_n but_o this_o may_v suffice_v at_o present_a by_o which_o also_o in_o a_o good_a measure_n the_o probation_n of_o the_o
truth_n we_o affirm_v be_v advance_v yet_o nevertheless_o for_o the_o further_o evidence_v of_o it_o i_o shall_v proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n propose_v by_o i_o to_o wit_n to_o prove_v this_o themselves_o child_n or_o friend_n of_o god_n while_o they_o do_v otherwise_o second_o it_o be_v possible_a because_o we_o receive_v the_o gospel_n and_o law_n thereof_o for_o that_o effect_n and_o it_o be_v express_o promise_v to_o we_o as_o we_o be_v under_o grace_n as_o appear_v by_o these_o scripture_n rom._n 6.14_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o for_o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n and_o rom._n 8.3_o for_o what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v in_o that_o it_o be_v weak_a through_o the_o flesh_n god_n send_v his_o own_o son_n etc._n etc._n that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n may_v be_v fulfil_v in_o we_o etc._n etc._n for_o if_o this_o be_v not_o a_o condition_n both_o requisite_a necessary_a and_o attainable_a under_o the_o roman_n argue_v not_o only_o the_o possibility_n but_o necessity_n of_o be_v free_a from_o sin_n from_o their_o be_v under_o the_o gospel_n and_o under_o grace_n and_o not_o under_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o state_n himself_o and_o those_o to_o who_o he_o write_v in_o that_o condition_n in_o these_o verse_n 2_o 3_o 4_o 5_o 6_o 7._o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o 11_o 12_o 13.16_o 17_o 18_o verse_n he_o argue_v both_o the_o possibility_n and_o necessity_n of_o this_o freedom_n from_o sin_n almost_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n we_o do_v a_o little_a before_o and_o the_o 22_o he_o declare_v they_o in_o measure_n to_o have_v attain_v this_o condition_n in_o these_o word_n but_o now_o be_v make_v free_a from_o sin_n and_o become_v servant_n to_o god_n you_o have_v your_o fruit_n unto_o holiness_n and_o the_o end_n everlasting_a life_n and_o as_o this_o perfection_n or_o freedom_n from_o sin_n be_v attain_v and_o make_v possible_a where_o the_o gospel_n and_o inward_a law_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v receive_v and_o know_v so_o the_o ignorance_n hereof_o have_v be_v and_o be_v a_o occasion_n of_o oppose_v this_o truth_n for_o man_n not_o mind_v the_o light_n and_o law_n within_o his_o heart_n which_o not_o only_o discover_v sin_n but_o lead_v out_o of_o it_o and_o so_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o the_o new_a life_n and_o birth_n that_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n which_o
