under_o his_o affliction_n may_v lie_v heavy_a upon_o his_o conscience_n and_o he_o may_v be_v so_o whole_o take_v up_o with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n and_o a_o implacability_n in_o god_n towards_o he_o that_o god_n will_v never_o show_v he_o mercy_n who_o have_v be_v so_o much_o and_o so_o long_o provoke_v that_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o return_v now_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n 7._o the_o vanity_n of_o a_o corrupt_a judgement_n which_o delude_v judgement_n from_o the_o vanity_n of_o a_o corrupt_a judgement_n the_o sinner_n as_o if_o he_o can_v be_v not_o only_o mean_n but_o grace_n itself_o not_o only_o the_o rod_n and_o word_n but_o likewise_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o his_o mighty_a operation_n not_o only_o a_o voice_n say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n but_o also_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o must_v cause_v we_o to_o walk_v in_o that_o way_n there_o must_v be_v heal_a medicine_n put_v within_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o hand_n of_o name_n with_o infamy_n and_o yet_o yet_o after_o all_o and_o under_o all_o that_o a_o person_n shall_v hold_v fast_o his_o wickedness_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o and_o will_v not_o let_v course_n be_v perish_v you_o must_v return_v or_o perish_v a_o by-path_n and_o lead_v to_o death_n it_o be_v sinful_a and_o you_o know_v it_o and_o be_v sinful_a it_o must_v be_v miserable_a to_o what_o end_n do_v the_o patient_n excuse_v the_o take_n of_o the_o receipt_n the_o wholesome_a balm_n he_o must_v die_v if_o he_o do_v not_o receive_v it_o so_o consider_v to_o what_o end_n do_v i_o thus_o vary_v my_o path_n and_o shuffle_v and_o seek_v support_n there_o be_v nothing_o strong_a enough_o to_o secure_v a_o sinner_n and_o let_v i_o sad_o consider_v that_o i_o must_v one_o time_n or_o other_o leave_v these_o sinning_n or_o else_o farewell_o my_o soul_n and_o salvation_n 3._o it_o can_v but_o be_v best_a the_o soon_o it_o be_v i_o must_v return_v or_o perish_v too_o soon_o i_o can_v return_v and_o the_o soon_o the_o better_a a_o safety_n our_o return_n be_v best_a the_o soon_o it_o be_v best_a for_o safety_n soldier_n of_o a_o middle_a age_n a_o counsellor_n of_o a_o grave_a age_n and_o a_o penitent_a of_o a_o young_a age_n be_v still_o the_o best_a the_o work_n which_o must_v be_v do_v be_v best_a do_v when_o soon_a best_o for_o safety_n for_o thy_o life_n be_v very_o uncertain_a and_o if_o thou_o do_v not_o leave_v thy_o sin_n to_o day_n thou_o may_v be_v in_o hell_n for_o aught_o thou_o know_v for_o thy_o sin_n to_o morrow_n for_o acceptance_n the_o lord_n like_v it_o best_o when_o acceptance_n for_o acceptance_n one_o word_n of_o mercy_n can_v cause_v we_o to_o trust_v and_o one_o shake_v of_o the_o rod_n can_v cause_v we_o to_o tremble_v and_o when_o one_o command_n suffice_v to_o turn_v we_o when_o upon_o the_o first_o arrest_n we_o give_v up_o our_o weapon_n it_o please_v sovereignty_n best_o for_o quietness_n for_o we_o do_v hereby_o deliver_v not_o only_o our_o soul_n but_o body_n also_o from_o many_o trouble_n quietness_n for_o quietness_n the_o soon_o we_o do_v repent_v and_o plain_o yield_v why_o conscience_n speak_v peace_n the_o joab_n and_o he_o will_v present_o remove_v the_o siege_n if_o a_o man_n have_v health_n he_o may_v take_v sleep_v the_o better_a but_o as_o long_o as_o the_o body_n be_v disease_v it_o be_v unquiet_a 4._o strive_v against_o those_o divert_v principle_n which_o do_v draw_v thou_o from_o the_o right_n and_o only_a way_n and_o put_v thou_o on_o by-thought_n and_o power_n strive_v against_o divert_v principle_n as_o presumption_n of_o mercy_n or_o of_o thy_o own_o power_n by-path_n and_o a_o vain_a assayment_n of_o mean_n to_o support_v we_o as_o 1._o presumption_n either_o of_o mercy_n though_o thou_o do_v add_v drunkenness_n to_o thirst_n and_o still_o find_v out_o thy_o own_o invention_n or_o thy_o own_o power_n thou_o may_v be_v hinder_v of_o the_o time_n which_o thou_o do_v project_n and_o may_v want_v strength_n to_o execute_v thy_o purpose_n for_o sinful_a practice_n do_v altogether_o weaken_v our_o power_n while_o they_o delude_v we_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o strength_n hereafter_o 2._o stoutness_n and_o pride_n of_o spirit_n do_v not_o in_o a_o bravery_n of_o villainy_n dispute_v with_o the_o almighty_a spirir_fw-fr stoutness_n and_o pride_n of_o spirir_fw-fr god_n it_o may_v prove_v a_o sad_a victory_n to_o thou_o that_o thou_o be_v able_a to_o reject_v good_a counsel_n and_o to_o quench_v all_o good_a motion_n 3._o delight_n sin_n delight_n in_o sin_n in_o sin_n which_o drown_v the_o errand_n of_o all_o affliction_n etc._n etc._n 5._o beseech_v the_o lord_n at_o the_o very_a first_o to_o circumcise_v the_o stubbornness_n heart_n beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o circumcise_v the_o stubbornness_n of_o your_o heart_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o to_o give_v you_o the_o understand_a ear_n and_o the_o obedient_a spirit_n that_o when_o in_o the_o word_n he_o call_v upon_o you_o to_o turn_v from_o your_o sin_n your_o heart_n may_v fall_v down_o and_o cry_v out_o o_o lord_n turn_v i_o and_o when_o by_o affliction_n he_o call_v upon_o you_o to_o turn_v you_o the_o lord_n be_v displease_v with_o we_o and_o we_o have_v hitherto_o harden_v our_o heart_n against_o the_o lord_n god_n have_v deal_v with_o we_o once_o twice_o often_o in_o public_a in_o private_a way_n and_o still_o we_o seek_v our_o own_o way_n delude_v the_o work_n of_o repentance_n set_v nothing_o to_o heart_n nor_o repent_v of_o our_o evil_a do_n i_o i._n now_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n which_o be_v the_o final_a convert_v the_o final_a disappointment_n of_o all_o the_o prodigal_n design_n doct._n 2._o nothing_o shall_v avail_v the_o shuffle_a sinner_n till_o he_o return_v but_o god_n will_v disappoint_v all_o his_o project_n some_o thing_n premise_v this_o be_v mean_v of_o a_o sinner_n who_o god_n intend_v to_o convert_v disappointment_n of_o the_o prodigal_n assay_n and_o design_n in_o these_o word_n and_o no_o man_n give_v unto_o he_o whence_o i_o observe_v that_o nothing_o shall_v avail_v the_o shuffle_a sinner_n until_o he_o do_v turn_v from_o his_o sin_n but_o god_n will_v disappoint_v all_o his_o project_n batter_v down_o all_o his_o confidence_n frustrate_v all_o his_o expectation_n drive_v he_o out_o of_o all_o his_o harbour_n and_o overthrow_v all_o the_o mean_n and_o way_n which_o he_o fly_v unto_o before_o i_o confirm_v this_o assertion_n let_v i_o premise_v a_o few_o particular_n that_o so_o you_o may_v right_o conceive_v the_o scope_n of_o it_o thus_o then_o 1._o i_o intend_v the_o assertion_n of_o a_o sinner_n who_o god_n do_v intend_v to_o convert_v other_o he_o may_v leave_v to_o prosper_v in_o their_o imagination_n for_o you_o see_v it_o raise_v from_o the_o disappointment_n of_o a_o prodigal_n one_o who_o conversion_n at_o length_n attend_v his_o manifold_a affliction_n and_o as_o manifold_a contrivance_n to_o keep_v up_o his_o sinful_a conversation_n though_o such_o a_o person_n know_v not_o it_o nor_o think_v on_o it_o yet_o god_n be_v secret_o against_o he_o and_o thrust_v he_o off_o from_o all_o the_o city_n of_o refuge_n
2._o 7._o then_o shall_v she_o say_v i_o will_v go_v and_o return_v to_o my_o first_o husband_n for_o than_o be_v it_o better_a with_o i_o then_o now_o the_o condition_n in_o which_o the_o church_n then_o be_v be_v a_o condition_n of_o much_o misery_n and_o affliction_n her_o way_n of_o sin_n be_v hedge_v up_o with_o thorn_n vers_fw-la 6._o and_o the_o way_n of_o obedience_n she_o consider_v of_o to_o be_v a_o path_n of_o mercy_n and_o much_o prosperity_n and_o compare_v the_o one_o condition_n with_o the_o other_o hereupon_o resolve_v to_o return_v to_o her_o first_o husband_n i_o to_o turn_v unto_o god_n by_o true_a repentance_n 3._o it_o may_v be_v clear_v by_o argument_n and_o reason_n that_o these_o two_o viz._n solid_a consideration_n and_o right_a comparison_n be_v step_n unto_o argument_n by_o argument_n repentance_n 1._o for_o solid_a consideration_n thus_o if_o inconsideration_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o impenitency_n or_o of_o go_v on_o in_o a_o sinful_a course_n than_o consideration_n consideration_n for_o solid_a consideration_n be_v a_o proper_a mean_n and_o way_n for_o repentance_n for_o as_o much_o as_o these_o two_o be_v contrary_n and_o contrary_a cause_n produce_v contrary_a effect_n but_o inconsideration_n be_v a_o cause_n of_o impenitency_n so_o the_o prophet_n repentance_n if_o inconsideration_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o impenitency_n than_o consideration_n be_v a_o proper_a mean_n for_o repentance_n jer._n 8._o 6._o no_o man_n repent_v he_o of_o his_o wickedness_n say_v what_o have_v i_o do_v every_o one_o turn_v to_o his_o course_n as_o the_o horse_n rush_v into_o the_o battle_n they_o mind_v not_o what_o they_o do_v whether_o lawful_a or_o unlawful_a or_o what_o will_v be_v the_o issue_n of_o these_o thing_n but_o like_o the_o horse_n which_o without_o fear_n or_o wit_n rush_v into_o the_o battle_n among_o sword_n and_o pike_n 2._o consideration_n of_o sin_n remove_v many_o quality_n which_o keep_v the_o as_o consideration_n of_o sin_n remove_v many_o quality_n of_o sin_n which_o keep_v the_o heaâ—t_o â—n_a impenitency_n as_o heart_n in_o impenitency_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o good_a step_n and_o way_n unto_o repentance_n there_o be_v three_o quality_n which_o hold_v fast_o the_o soul_n from_o return_v 1._o ignorance_n therefore_o darken_a understanding_n and_o heart_n alienate_v from_o the_o life_n of_o god_n be_v conjoin_v eph._n 4._o 18._o a_o blind_a mind_n and_o a_o wicked_a life_n be_v inseparable_a yea_o greediness_n to_o sin_n and_o ignorance_n be_v there_o also_o couple_v vers_fw-la 18_o 19_o no_o man_n so_o forward_o ignorance_n ignorance_n to_o sin_n as_o he_o who_o know_v it_o not_o now_o solid_a consideration_n remove_v ignorance_n it_o open_v the_o eye_n of_o our_o understanding_n and_o make_v we_o to_o see_v and_o behold_v that_o evil_n in_o sin_n which_o we_o never_o see_v before_o in_o a_o right_a consideration_n there_o be_v 1._o lumen_fw-la scientiae_fw-la 2._o conscientiae_fw-la 3._o experientiae_fw-la 2._o security_n for_o presumptuous_a man_n will_v never_o leave_v sin_n if_o they_o may_v be_v safe_a he_o who_o fear_v not_o miserable_a evil_n will_v not_o be_v security_n security_n persuade_v to_o forsake_v his_o sinful_a evil_n he_o who_o think_v that_o he_o may_v be_v wicked_a and_o safe_a will_v be_v wicked_a still_o nay_o he_o add_v falsehood_n and_o error_n we_o be_v deceive_v and_o err_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o therefore_o we_o continue_v in_o sinful_a way_n but_o as_o truth_n do_v rise_v in_o the_o mind_n so_o reformation_n will_v appear_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o way_n know_v therefore_o that_o sin_n appear_v unto_o we_o two_o way_n either_o erroneous_o as_o invest_v and_o clothe_v with_o pleasure_n profit_n much_o serviceableness_n to_o our_o end_n and_z as_o satisfaction_n of_o our_o desire_n as_o judas_n look_v on_o his_o sin_n in_o the_o money_n and_o go_v on_o and_o thus_o they_o tend_v to_o impenitency_n in_o the_o lamb_n arm_n and_o foot_n which_o come_v from_o unsound_a humour_n in_o the_o brain_n so_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n man_n go_v on_o confident_o in_o sin_n and_o be_v take_v excessive_o with_o those_o poor_a bait_n of_o sensual_a pleasure_n and_o profit_n as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o pleasure_n delight_n gain_n acquirable_a or_o to_o be_v find_v but_o in_o the_o way_n and_o service_n of_o sin_n as_o they_o in_o hell_n think_v there_o be_v no_o other_o heaven_n or_o as_o foolish_a child_n who_o conceive_v no_o other_o sport_n or_o delight_n like_o a_o rattle_n or_o dirt_v their_o hand_n etc._n etc._n but_o now_o when_o by_o a_o comparison_n and_o true_a survey_n of_o either_o estate_n it_o shall_v appear_v unto_o the_o soul_n that_o all_o these_o sinful_a pleasure_n and_o profit_n
repentance_n never_o to_o be_v repent_v of_o have_v thou_o right_o consider_v of_o sin_n why_o what_o be_v thou_o now_o do_v where_o may_v thou_o now_o be_v find_v what_o course_n do_v thou_o take_v actual_a inconsideration_n may_v arise_v either_o from_o want_n of_o light_n or_o evidence_n the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v not_o yet_o so_o full_o open_v they_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_o acquaint_v with_o the_o law_n which_o discover_v sin_n much_o sin_n they_o see_v but_o not_o all_o not_o that_o they_o will_v not_o but_o because_o they_o can_v so_o a_o weak_a eye_n have_v not_o wilful_a and_o affect_a will_v be_v interpret_v for_o impenitency_n because_o the_o person_n will_v not_o endeavour_v faithful_o the_o way_n of_o repentance_n 2._o that_o the_o latitude_n of_o the_o object_n consider_v do_v not_o so_o immediate_o discover_v and_o decide_v as_o the_o efficacy_n and_o influence_n flow_v from_o consideration_n itself_o though_o i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o find_v out_o every_o particular_a wherein_o i_o do_v offend_v yet_o if_o by_o the_o consideration_n of_o those_o sin_n which_o i_o do_v consider_v of_o my_o heart_n do_v melt_v and_o mourn_v and_o strive_v to_o loath_a and_o forsake_v they_o because_o they_o be_v sinful_a if_o these_o drive_v i_o out_o of_o myself_o unto_o christ_n if_o these_o occasion_n i_o earnest_o to_o acquaint_v myself_o with_o god_n to_o beg_v for_o reconciliation_n for_o grace_n for_o mercy_n for_o strength_n etc._n etc._n though_o there_o be_v many_o sin_n which_o i_o have_v not_o actual_o think_v on_o yet_o this_o may_v and_o the_o act_n of_o it_o grace_n or_o quality_n of_o repentance_n and_o betwixt_o the_o act_n or_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n the_o grace_n be_v wrought_v only_o by_o god_n spirit_n the_o exercise_n or_o operation_n be_v wrought_v and_o occasion_v by_o consideration_n these_o thing_n be_v premise_v i_o conjecture_v thus_o much_o 1._o that_o solemn_a consideration_n be_v necessary_a to_o initial_a repentance_n repentance_n solemn_a consideration_n necessary_a to_o initial_a repentance_n the_o heart_n be_v not_o effectual_o excite_v to_o the_o actual_a leave_v of_o sin_n until_o consideration_n i_o do_v not_o mean_v a_o slight_a and_o perfunctory_a view_n of_o they_o but_o a_o daily_a view_n though_o not_o in_o length_n of_o time_n yet_o have_v the_o same_o disposition_n of_o heart_n to_o condemn_v and_o abhor_v they_o and_o quicken_a we_o more_o fervent_o to_o seek_v god_n for_o strength_n and_o to_o decline_v the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o grow_v more_o watchful_a and_o tender_a etc._n etc._n if_o you_o do_v not_o ordinary_o consider_v of_o the_o vileness_n of_o sin_n you_o will_v be_v ordinary_o ensnare_v by_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n if_o you_o will_v enjoy_v constant_a victory_n and_o deliverance_n you_o must_v admit_v of_o frequent_a consideration_n as_o for_o the_o solemn_a consideration_n that_o i_o conjecture_n be_v not_o necessary_a at_o all_o time_n but_o upon_o special_a occasion_n either_o 1._o before_o we_o necessary_a solemn_a consideration_n not_o necessary_a at_o all_o time_n the_o time_n when_o it_o be_v necessary_a enter_v into_o some_o weighty_a business_n 2._o when_o we_o lie_v under_o some_o weighty_a affliction_n 3._o when_o we_o be_v to_o die_v and_o make_v straight_o our_o weighty_a account_n 4._o when_o we_o be_v more_o solemn_o to_o meet_v the_o lord_n and_o renew_v our_o covenant_n with_o he_o as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o humiliation_n or_o when_o we_o be_v to_o come_v unto_o the_o sacrament_n now_o be_v we_o more_o solemn_o and_o serious_o to_o consider_v of_o our_o sin_n partly_o 1._o because_o now_o the_o lord_n it_o reason_n of_o it_o consider_v they_o who_o come_v into_o his_o special_a presence_n how_o you_o come_v 2._o because_o you_o be_v serious_o to_o renew_v your_o repentance_n which_o you_o can_v serious_o do_v without_o serious_a consideration_n 3._o because_o you_o be_v to_o renew_v your_o covenant_n with_o god_n to_o keep_v a_o more_o serious_a watch_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o now_o let_v we_o search_v our_o heart_n try_v and_o consider_v of_o our_o way_n renew_v our_o repentance_n turn_v with_o all_o our_o strength_n unto_o the_o lord_n put_v away_o iniquity_n far_o from_o we_o humble_v ourselves_o low_a before_o the_o lord_n confess_v our_o sin_n judge_v ourselves_o thus_o if_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v find_v more_o strength_n in_o our_o repentance_n more_o peace_n in_o our_o conscience_n more_o sweetness_n in_o the_o sacrament_n more_o confidence_n towards_o christ_n and_o may_v comfortable_o expect_v the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o salvation_n by_o his_o blood_n the_o three_o
life_n and_o maintain_v the_o bent_n and_o inclination_n of_o the_o will_n it_o do_v arise_v from_o and_o depend_v upon_o mature_a consideration_n and_o upon_o deep_a conviction_n the_o sinner_n do_v first_o look_v into_o and_o serious_o peruse_v and_o weigh_v a_o impenitent_a and_o sinful_a course_n and_o see_v the_o strong_a and_o forcibl_a and_o just_a cause_n to_o renounce_v it_o for_o ever_o and_o also_o upon_o due_a trial_n and_o search_v and_o weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n he_o do_v find_v the_o way_n of_o new_a obedience_n to_o be_v the_o 〈◊〉_d and_o only_a way_n not_o divide_v will_n a_o strong_a purpose_n of_o the_o will_n but_o unite_v or_o when_o they_o be_v root_v in_o a_o habit_n or_o principle_n and_o not_o only_o in_o a_o occasion_n and_o accident_n or_o when_o they_o be_v absolute_a and_o not_o conditional_a if_o the_o operation_n be_v divide_v they_o be_v weak_a as_o river_n etc._n etc._n so_o when_o a_o man_n partly_o will_v this_o and_o partly_o that_o he_o be_v incline_v somewhat_o to_o leave_v his_o sin_n and_o yet_o he_o be_v incline_v to_o keep_v it_o this_o division_n hinder_v right_a resolution_n which_o be_v not_o so_o indifferent_a so_o indeterminate_a so_o divide_v but_o centre_n the_o inclination_n of_o the_o will_n only_o one_o way_n viz._n to_o a_o peremptory_a rejection_n of_o evil_n and_o a_o peremptory_a election_n of_o good_a the_o soul_n go_v down_o and_o it_o be_v not_o a_o grain_n which_o will_v turn_v it_o again_o if_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o will_v arise_v only_o from_o occasion_n which_o be_v busy_v in_o alterable_a circumstance_n they_o can_v never_o be_v strong_a as_o the_o colour_n in_o the_o face_n which_o arise_v from_o violent_a exercise_n only_o go_v off_o present_o so_o that_o resolution_n if_o it_o may_v be_v so_o call_v which_o arise_v from_o changeable_a impression_n be_v always_o weak_a and_o fade_a a_o deceitful_a bow_n unsteadfast_a in_o their_o affliction_n they_o
