idolater_n nor_o adulterer_n nor_o effeminate_a nor_o abuser_n of_o themselves_o with_o mankind_n nor_o thief_n nor_o covetous_a nor_o drunkard_n nor_o reviler_n nor_o extortioner_n shall_v inherit_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 6.9_o 10._o and_o that_o text_n say_v express_o that_o the_o fearful_a and_o unbelieving_a and_o the_o abominable_a and_o murderer_n and_o sorcerer_n and_o not_o believe_v they_o and_o because_o they_o do_v not_o know_v and_o believe_v they_o therefore_o there_o be_v in_o they_o a_o evil_a heart_n of_o unbelief_n to_o depart_v from_o the_o live_a god_n the_o first_o step_n of_o the_o soul_n departure_n from_o god_n be_v by_o unbelief_n so_o the_o first_o step_n of_o the_o soul_n approach_v to_o god_n be_v by_o faith_n unbelief_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o sin_n a_o man_n that_o do_v not_o believe_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o embrace_v they_o nor_o the_o threaten_n of_o god_n to_o fear_v they_o nor_o the_o precept_n of_o god_n to_o obey_v they_o when_o he_o depart_v from_o god_n by_o unbelief_n he_o depart_v to_o other_o sin_n and_o still_o depart_v further_a and_o further_o so_o that_o the_o breach_n between_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v never_o make_v up_o again_o but_o such_o a_o man_n depart_v from_o god_n step_v by_o step_n until_o at_o last_o he_o come_v to_o hear_v that_o thunder-striking_a sentence_n depart_v you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n a_o second_o use_n be_v by_o way_n of_o examination_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o my_o brethren_n to_o call_v yourselves_o to_o a_o account_n and_o examine_v whether_o you_o have_v this_o certainty_n of_o understanding_n this_o assure_a knowledge_n that_o i_o have_v discourse_v of_o may_v be_v you_o will_v say_v to_o i_o but_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v whether_o we_o have_v it_o or_o no_o answ_n i_o will_v tell_v you_o how_o you_o may_v know_v it_o these_o three_o way_n first_o by_o the_o name_n or_o expression_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n give_v it_o second_o by_o the_o property_n of_o it_o three_o by_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o first_o you_o may_v know_v it_o by_o the_o name_n or_o expression_n that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n give_v it_o such_o expression_n as_o these_o now_o first_o it_o be_v call_v a_o knowledge_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v most_o sure_o believe_v luke_n 1.1_o not_o bare_o believe_v but_o certain_o believe_v a_o second_o expression_n be_v a_o be_v teach_v of_o god_n john_n 6.45_o and_o they_o shall_v be_v all_o teach_v of_o god_n three_o it_o be_v know_v by_o this_o expression_n by_o write_v the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n upon_o the_o table_n of_o our_o heart_n jer._n 31.33_o heb._n 8.10_o four_o by_o this_o expression_n by_o receive_v the_o anoint_v that_o teach_v you_o all_o thing_n 1_o joh._n 2.27_o but_o the_o anoint_v which_o you_o have_v receive_v of_o he_o abide_v in_o you_o and_o you_o need_v not_o that_o any_o man_n teach_v you_o but_o as_o the_o same_o anoint_v teach_v you_o of_o all_o thing_n and_o be_v truth_n five_o it_o be_v know_v by_o this_o expression_n by_o have_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n or_o know_v the_o mind_n of_o christ_n 1_o cor._n 2._o ult_n six_o it_o be_v know_v by_o this_o expression_n by_o bring_v high_a thought_n into_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n 2_o cor._n 10.5_o when_o there_o be_v such_o a_o light_n in_o a_o man_n that_o it_o can_v answer_v those_o objection_n that_o be_v make_v against_o the_o truth_n when_o it_o can_v likewise_o so_o stifle_v those_o reason_n and_o cavil_n of_o his_o backslide_n heart_n that_o none_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o beat_v down_o the_o truth_n but_o he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o stick_v to_o the_o truth_n notwithstanding_o such_o a_o man_n have_v this_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n last_o it_o be_v know_v by_o this_o expression_n the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n 1_o cor._n 12.2_o but_o the_o manifestation_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v give_v to_o every_o man_n to_o profit_v withal_o second_o this_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n may_v be_v know_v by_o the_o property_n of_o it_o i_o shall_v name_v but_o these_o four_o property_n first_o this_o assure_v knowledge_n be_v ever_o a_o heart-humbling_a knowledge_n carnal_a knowledge_n natural_a knowledge_n unsanctify_v knowledge_n puff_v a_o those_o glorious_a hope_n that_o be_v lay_v up_o for_o the_o saint_n in_o light_n four_o be_v content_v to_o endure_v some_o hardship_n in_o the_o way_n heaven_n will_v make_v amends_o for_o all_o all_o the_o cost_n discouragement_n and_o difficulty_n that_o you_o meet_v with_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o your_o hope_n will_v be_v abundant_o recompense_v by_o one_o hour_n fruition_n of_o that_o eternal_a happiness_n second_o if_o you_o will_v not_o despise_v or_o undervalue_v that_o heavenly_a inheritance_n learn_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sight_n and_o sense_n if_o you_o the_o text_n and_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n but_o so_o much_o for_o this_o time_n psal._n cvi_o 24._o and_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n i_o have_v speak_v to_o this_o text_n in_o one_o sermon_n already_o as_o you_o may_v remember_v in_o it_o i_o take_v notice_n of_o two_o branch_n first_o israel_n horrible_a ingratitude_n in_o these_o word_n they_o despise_v the_o pleasant_a land_n and_o that_o i_o finish_v last_o day_n now_o i_o come_v to_o the_o second_o branch_n of_o the_o text_n that_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o their_o ingratitude_n in_o these_o word_n they_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n what_o word_n they_o believe_v not_o the_o promise_n that_o god_n have_v make_v unto_o they_o that_o he_o will_v bestow_v the_o land_n of_o canaan_n upon_o they_o nay_o god_n do_v not_o only_o promise_v it_o but_o he_o swear_v unto_o abraham_n isaac_n and_o jacob_n gen._n 50.24_o and_o joseph_n say_v unto_o his_o brethren_n i_o die_v and_o god_n will_v sure_o visit_v you_o and_o bring_v you_o out_o of_o this_o land_n to_o the_o land_n which_o he_o swear_v to_o abraham_n to_o isaac_n and_o jacob._n but_o because_o the_o spy_n forsooth_o come_v and_o tell_v they_o oh_o there_o be_v wall_v city_n and_o giant_n and_o anakim_v to_o fight_v with_o and_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o you_o to_o get_v possession_n of_o the_o land_n therefore_o they_o believe_v the_o spy_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n they_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o those_o that_o tell_v they_o of_o the_o giant_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n report_n they_o will_v not_o believe_v god_n promise_n so_o the_o doctrine_n i_o shall_v commend_v to_o you_o from_o this_o second_o branch_n of_o the_o text_n be_v this_o doct._n one_o main_a reason_n why_o man_n do_v undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n and_o so_o come_v short_a of_o it_o be_v their_o unbelief_n look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n here_o speak_v of_o in_o the_o text_n the_o sin_n that_o make_v they_o despise_v and_o undervalue_v the_o land_n of_o canaan_n and_o so_o be_v debar_v and_o shut_v out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n be_v their_o unbelief_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v express_o heb._n 3._o ult_n so_o we_o see_v they_o can_v not_o enter_v in_o because_o of_o unbelief_n so_o here_o one_o main_a reason_n why_o man_n undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n and_o so_o come_v short_a or_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o heavenly_a canaan_n it_o be_v their_o unbelief_n man_n believe_v lie_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o truth_n they_o believe_v the_o devil_n who_o be_v a_o liar_n and_o tell_v they_o they_o may_v come_v to_o heaven_n with_o a_o wet-finger_n and_o therefore_o they_o may_v live_v as_o they_o listen_v but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o tell_v they_o straight_o be_v the_o gate_n and_o narrow_a be_v the_o way_n that_o lead_v to_o life_n and_o few_o there_o be_v that_o find_v it_o matth._n 7.14_o they_o believe_v the_o father_n of_o lie_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v he_o that_o be_v the_o god_n of_o truth_n who_o say_v strive_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o strait_a gate_n for_o many_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o shall_v seek_v to_o enter_v in_o but_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a luke_n 13.24_o they_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o satan_n but_o they_o will_v not_o believe_v the_o report_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o tell_v we_o express_o 1_o pet._n 4.18_o and_o if_o the_o righteous_a scarce_o be_v save_v where_o shall_v the_o ungodly_a and_o sinner_n appear_v they_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o doctrine_n which_o you_o may_v remember_v prove_v out_o of_o heb._n 4.1_o let_v we_o therefore_o fear_n lest_o a_o promise_n be_v leave_v we_o of_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n any_o of_o you_o shall_v seem_v to_o come_v short_a of_o it_o where_o i_o show_v you_o that_o the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o life_n of_o fear_n and_o that_o in_o matter_n of_o soul-concernment_n christian_n shall_v not_o only_o be_v very_o jealous_a of_o themselves_o but_o of_o other_o also_o i_o also_o show_v you_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o be_v professor_n of_o the_o truth_n or_o true_a religion_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n and_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o that_o be_v confident_a that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n and_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o many_o to_o come_v very_o near_o to_o heaven_n and_o yet_o to_o come_v short_a of_o heaven_n but_o man_n will_v not_o believe_v these_o truth_n now_o their_o unbelief_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o they_o slight_a heaven_n and_o shall_v be_v deprive_v of_o heaven_n for_o the_o better_a explication_n of_o this_o doctrine_n there_o be_v two_o thing_n i_o shall_v open_v to_o you_o first_o what_o this_o unbelief_n be_v that_o make_v man_n so_o undervalue_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n second_o why_o this_o unbelief_n be_v such_o a_o great_a and_o grievous_a sin_n so_o dangerous_a and_o destructive_a that_o it_o deprive_v man_n of_o that_o heavenly_a canaan_n first_o what_o this_o unbelief_n be_v that_o make_v man_n slight_v the_o heavenly_a canaan_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o twofold_a unbelief_n there_o be_v a_o negative_a and_o there_o be_v a_o positive_a unbelief_n first_o there_o be_v a_o negative_a unbelief_n and_o that_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o pagan_n and_o heathen_n that_o never_o hear_v of_o god_n nor_o of_o the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ_n they_o believe_v not_o because_o they_o know_v not_o they_o know_v not_o god_n rom._n 10.14_o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v this_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o pagan_n this_o ignorance_n it_o excuse_v in_o part_n though_o not_o in_o whole_a their_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o great_a by_o far_o as_o the_o sin_n of_o those_o that_o do_v profess_v the_o gospel_n yet_o their_o negative_a unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n because_o god_n commandment_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v believe_v on_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 1_o john_n 3.23_o and_o this_o be_v his_o commandment_n that_o we_o believe_v in_o the_o name_n of_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n but_o this_o be_v the_o negative_a unbelief_n this_o concern_v not_o we_o but_o it_o concern_v those_o that_o know_v not_o god_n second_o there_o
what_o sin_n be_v there_o so_o gross_a and_o grievous_a that_o a_o unbeliever_n will_v not_o run_v into_o if_o a_o man_n believe_v not_o the_o threaten_n he_o will_v practise_v no_o good_a for_o example_n if_o a_o man_n do_v but_o believe_v that_o terrble_n scripture_n rev._n 21.8_o but_o the_o fearful_a and_o unbelieving_a and_o the_o abominable_a and_o murderer_n and_o whoremonger_n and_o sorcerer_n and_o idolater_n and_o all_o liar_n shall_v have_v their_o part_n in_o the_o lake_n which_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n which_o be_v the_o second_o death_n if_o a_o man_n do_v believe_v that_o scripture_n dare_v he_o be_v a_o coward_n to_o betray_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n god_n speak_v of_o the_o fearful_a one_o in_o that_o sense_n to_o be_v cowardly_a christian_n do_v he_o believe_v this_o dare_v he_o be_v such_o a_o abominable_a wretch_n to_o run_v into_o such_o abominable_a blasphemy_n which_o be_v not_o to_o be_v name_v which_o be_v belch_v out_o against_o god_n in_o these_o day_n dare_v he_o be_v a_o idolater_n a_o liar_n a_o swearer_n certain_o he_o dare_v not_o but_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n if_o a_o tyrant_n shall_v threaten_v any_o of_o you_o with_o the_o rack_n or_o strappado_n which_o will_v break_v your_o bone_n oh_o what_o terror_n and_o tremble_a will_v take_v hold_n of_o you_o how_o will_v you_o fall_v down_o at_o his_o foot_n and_o seek_v his_o face_n and_o favour_n yet_o that_o tyrant_n can_v take_v away_o nothing_o but_o a_o poor_a miserable_a mortal_a life_n but_o the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n he_o threaten_v sinner_n with_o the_o punishment_n of_o loss_n the_o loss_n of_o his_o presence_n of_o his_o favour_n of_o fellowship_n with_o he_o in_o glory_n nay_o he_o threaten_v with_o the_o punishment_n of_o sense_n those_o unconceivable_a torture_n and_o torment_n in_o hell_n for_o ever_o to_o all_o eternity_n and_o yet_o sinner_n do_v not_o tremble_v at_o this_o great_a god_n they_o do_v not_o fall_v down_o and_o seek_v his_o face_n and_o savour_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o they_o believe_v not_o if_o so_o be_v a_o faithful_a man_n that_o be_v never_o yet_o know_v to_o break_v his_o word_n and_o a_o man_n of_o a_o great_a estate_n that_o be_v able_a to_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n if_o he_o shall_v promise_v any_o of_o you_o a_o inheritance_n of_o two_o or_o three_o hundred_o by_o the_o year_n you_o will_v believe_v that_o man_n on_o his_o word_n and_o you_o will_v seek_v to_o please_v he_o you_o will_v prize_v his_o favour_n but_o now_o the_o great_a god_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n that_o be_v never_o yet_o know_v to_o break_v his_o word_n he_o tell_v you_o of_o a_o heavenly_a inheritance_n incorruptible_a undefiled_a reserve_v in_o heaven_n and_o yet_o do_v you_o not_o seek_v to_o please_v he_o or_o prize_v his_o favour_n or_o obey_v he_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o you_o believe_v not_o his_o word_n so_o the_o truth_n be_v unbelief_n be_v the_o mother_n of_o all_o disobedience_n that_o be_v the_o second_o reason_n three_o unbelief_n be_v a_o sin_n thus_o dangerous_a and_o destructive_a to_o the_o soul_n because_o god_n have_v provide_v more_o antidote_n and_o remedy_n against_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n than_o against_o any_o other_o sin_n to_o cure_v this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n first_o god_n have_v give_v we_o his_o word_n which_o be_v a_o most_o faithful_a word_n heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v pass_v away_o say_v our_o saviour_n but_o my_o word_n shall_v not_o pass_v away_o matth._n 24.35_o second_o god_n have_v give_v we_o his_o promise_n now_o all_o his_o promise_n be_v sure_a and_o certain_a yea_o and_o amen_o god_n be_v faithful_a and_o will_v make_v good_a his_o promise_n 2_o cor._n 1.20_o for_o he_o that_o be_v a_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n shall_v be_v bless_v in_o his_o deed_n james_n 1.25_o he_o do_v not_o say_v for_o his_o deed_n so_o you_o may_v be_v bless_v in_o your_o good_a work_n
