brief_o clear_v this_o in_o two_o thing_n 1._o it_o be_v grant_v it_o be_v true_a that_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o adam_n state_n of_o innocency_n to_o rely_v upon_o christ_n and_o to_o believe_v on_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n to_o save_v he_o from_o sin_n for_o he_o have_v no_o sin_n he_o be_v innocent_a therefore_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o state_n to_o believe_v on_o christ_n as_o a_o saviour_n yea_o it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o require_v adam_n to_o believe_v on_o christ_n to_o command_v such_o a_o duty_n of_o adam_n yet_o notwithstanding_o mark_v i_o pray_v adam_n have_v a_o principle_n and_o a_o virtual_a power_n for_o to_o have_v believe_v on_o christ_n if_o god_n have_v require_v it_o of_o he_o though_o its_o true_a it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o state_n that_o god_n shall_v require_v it_o of_o he_o yet_o adam_n have_v this_o principle_n this_o virtual_a power_n put_v into_o he_o with_o his_o first_o he_o whatever_o god_n shall_v reveal_v to_o be_v his_o will_n he_o have_v power_n to_o believe_v it_o and_o yield_v obedience_n to_o it_o though_o it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v inconsistent_a with_o his_o state_n actual_o to_o believe_v yet_o he_o have_v a_o power_n to_o have_v believe_v on_o christ_n if_o god_n have_v require_v it_o of_o he_o for_o adam_n have_v a_o power_n to_o do_v that_o of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o commandment_n to_o help_v to_o convince_v a_o soul_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n no_o more_o than_o the_o second_o commandment_n be_v a_o mean_n and_o instrument_n to_o convince_v we_o of_o our_o neglect_n of_o gospel_n worship_n because_o it_o be_v not_o express_o command_v there_o but_o implicit_o and_o consequential_o therefore_o i_o say_v it_o must_v be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n alone_o to_o convince_v of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n the_o law_n and_o conscience_n may_v help_v to_o convince_v the_o soul_n of_o other_o sin_n but_o none_o but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v convince_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n this_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n that_o the_o spirit_n do_v in_o the_o soul_n in_o order_n to_o the_o convince_a of_o it_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n namely_o to_o open_v the_o eye_n of_o the_o understanding_n and_o to_o reveal_v and_o discover_v to_o the_o soul_n the_o evil_a that_o eph._n 1.6_o say_v the_o apostle_n wherein_o he_o have_v make_v we_o accept_v in_o the_o belove_a our_o person_n be_v accept_v in_o the_o belove_a and_o our_o service_n be_v accept_v in_o the_o be_v diligent_a in_o its_o call_n to_o be_v careful_a in_o all_o its_o deal_n to_o be_v abundant_a in_o duty_n and_o service_n give_v attendance_n to_o the_o word_n wait_v upon_o god_n in_o every_o ordinance_n the_o soul_n go_v on_o in_o this_o way_n and_o think_v now_o it_o be_v in_o a_o way_n of_o salvation_n i_o will_v not_o discourage_v and_o dishearten_v any_o from_o go_v on_o in_o such_o a_o way_n but_o still_o without_o faith_n this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n we_o be_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n and_o we_o be_v all_o of_o we_o natural_o incline_v to_o seek_v for_o salvation_n in_o this_o way_n in_o walk_v exact_o and_o be_v conscientious_a in_o the_o performance_n of_o duty_n and_o be_v diligent_a in_o our_o vocation_n and_o calling_n this_o be_v the_o way_n wherein_o the_o poor_a israelite_n do_v miscarry_v and_o perish_v say_v the_o apostle_n rom._n 9.30.31_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v that_o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n a_o wrong_a course_n all_o this_o time_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n begin_v to_o be_v amaze_v to_o think_v he_o have_v lose_v all_o his_o time_n and_o all_o his_o labour_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n see_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o life_n and_o salvation_n but_o the_o way_n of_o salvation_n be_v in_o the_o way_n of_o believe_v on_o christ_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n be_v set_v in_o that_o way_n and_o course_n of_o believe_v on_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v the_o word_n behind_o we_o which_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n speak_v of_o isa_n 30.21_o thou_o shall_v hear_v a_o voice_n behind_o thou_o say_v this_o be_v the_o way_n walk_v in_o it_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o whisper_v in_o our_o ear_n and_o tell_v we_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o life_n and_o salvation_n there_o be_v little_a real_a humiliation_n for_o that_o and_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n because_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n only_o to_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o do_v desire_v more_o and_o more_o to_o see_v the_o evil_n of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n true_o we_o have_v need_v to_o look_v up_o for_o the_o spirit_n to_o discover_v it_o to_o we_o that_o all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v can_v never_o please_v god_n unless_o we_o do_v believe_v on_o christ_n whatever_o prayer_n we_o make_v whatever_o duty_n we_o perform_v yet_o all_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v and_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n therefore_o look_v up_o for_o the_o spirit_n and_o wait_v for_o the_o spirit_n to_o be_v give_v out_o to_o pray_v consider_v serious_o of_o it_o for_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n to_o convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n objection_n you_o will_v say_v have_v the_o spirit_n discover_v to_o you_o i_o tell_v you_o brethren_n if_o so_o be_v you_o have_v not_o be_v convince_v and_o see_v something_o of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n true_o you_o have_v cause_n to_o question_v whether_o ever_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o you_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n let_v i_o tell_v you_o plain_o and_o i_o pray_v bear_v with_o i_o you_o may_v have_v be_v convince_v of_o sin_n and_o yet_o the_o spirit_n have_v never_o be_v at_o work_n upon_o you_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n no_o when_o the_o spirit_n do_v work_v in_o order_n to_o salvation_n it_o do_v soon_o or_o late_a convince_v of_o this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n therefore_o if_o you_o be_v persuade_v that_o the_o spirit_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o your_o heart_n in_o convince_a you_o of_o sin_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n then_o wait_v for_o it_o and_o look_v that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v discover_v this_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n to_o you_o wait_v for_o it_o no_o further_o there_o may_v be_v conviction_n where_o no_o conversion_n follow_v and_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o he_o shall_v also_o convince_v unbeliever_n that_o be_v elect_v convince_v they_o effectual_o so_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o to_o conversion_n and_o i_o think_v especial_o and_o chief_o our_o saviour_n here_o mean_v those_o unbeliever_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v elect_v though_o i_o will_v not_o exclude_v the_o other_o but_o those_o especial_o that_o be_v elect_v and_o shall_v be_v bring_v on_o through_o conviction_n and_o conversion_n to_o salvation_n for_o christ_n do_v speak_v these_o word_n by_o way_n of_o comfort_n to_o the_o disciple_n that_o the_o spirit_n shall_v come_v and_o assist_v they_o in_o their_o ministry_n it_o be_v some_o comfort_n indeed_o if_o any_o be_v convince_v but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o much_o comfort_n as_o to_o be_v convince_v and_o effectual_o wrought_v upon_o to_o take_v some_o occasion_n or_o other_o to_o come_v together_o again_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o a_o sinner_n so_o long_o as_o his_o affection_n be_v not_o take_v off_o from_o sin_n and_o till_o a_o soul_n be_v convince_v of_o sin_n his_o affection_n remain_v to_o it_o and_o though_o it_o may_v be_v affright_v and_o restrain_v for_o a_o time_n yet_o it_o will_v return_v again_o just_o as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o bowl_n it_o will_v run_v on_o so_o long_o as_o the_o force_n of_o the_o hand_n remain_v but_o it_o will_v return_v again_o to_o its_o natural_a bias_n so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o sinner_n possible_o he_o may_v be_v under_o some_o restraint_n through_o some_o fright_n and_o amazement_n by_o some_o eminent_a danger_n it_o be_v in_o but_o when_o that_o fear_n or_o fright_v be_v over_o as_o long_o as_o the_o affection_n hold_v and_o be_v never_o disengage_v and_o break_v off_o from_o sin_n the_o sinner_n will_v return_v and_o be_v as_o eager_a and_o as_o violent_a upon_o righteousness_n now_o then_o brief_o for_o the_o application_n of_o it_o in_o a_o word_n application_n here_o than_o we_o may_v come_v to_o understand_v whether_o or_o no_o the_o spirit_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o our_o soul_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n it_o be_v a_o great_a question_n i_o suppose_v you_o will_v think_v it_o so_o when_o you_o come_v to_o lie_v upon_o your_o deathbed_n whether_o for_o no_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o my_o heart_n in_o order_n to_o my_o salvation_n well_o you_o see_v it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n to_o convince_v of_o sin_n and_o to_o convince_v of_o righteousness_n then_o consider_v i_o pray_v consider_v serious_o between_o the_o lord_n and_o your_o own_o soul_n and_o let_v we_o not_o willing_o deceive_v our_o own_o soul_n have_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n ever_o be_v thus_o at_o work_n upon_o my_o heart_n have_v the_o spirit_n ever_o come_v and_o convince_v i_o spirit_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n his_o conviction_n of_o sin_n may_v be_v no_o argument_n to_o he_o that_o the_o spirit_n have_v be_v at_o work_n upon_o his_o heart_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n indeed_o when_o a_o soul_n come_v to_o that_o discovery_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v convince_v of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n than_o there_o be_v the_o great_a hope_n that_o such_o a_o soul_n be_v not_o like_a to_o miscarry_v for_o i_o be_o persuade_v that_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n never_o convince_v a_o soul_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o unbelief_n but_o it_o be_v in_o order_n to_o his_o salvation_n you_o shall_v never_o have_v a_o carnal_a heart_n to_o understand_v the_o evil_n of_o unbelief_n that_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n now_o consider_v i_o pray_v have_v the_o lord_n discover_v to_o you_o and_o convince_v you_o of_o sin_n especial_o of_o the_o sin_n of_o unbelief_n objection_n you_o will_v say_v possible_o i_o hope_v the_o spirit_n you_o may_v be_v convince_v that_o this_o be_v a_o truth_n that_o there_o be_v no_o salvation_n but_o by_o christ_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n may_v be_v convince_v of_o this_o notional_o he_o may_v have_v this_o knowledge_n in_o his_o head_n that_o the_o only_a way_n whereby_o i_o must_v attain_v to_o salvation_n must_v be_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o believe_v on_o christ_n but_o i_o pray_v consider_v whether_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n have_v thorough_o convince_v you_o of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n question_n you_o will_v say_v how_o shall_v i_o know_v that_o answer_n brief_o by_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v convince_v a_o soul_n of_o righteousness_n in_o order_n to_o salvation_n it_o do_v as_o you_o hear_v take_v a_o soul_n
for_o a_o supply_n of_o they_o and_o be_v unsatisfied_a without_o they_o whosoever_o he_o be_v that_o be_v thus_o let_v he_o come_v to_o i_o now_o i_o say_v this_o same_o spiritual_a thirst_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v very_o necessary_a else_o the_o soul_n will_v hardly_o ever_o come_v to_o christ_n for_o to_o be_v supply_v like_a as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n that_o have_v no_o ailment_n at_o
