sin_n but_o such_o as_o have_v faith_n answ_n answ_n such_o elect_a infant_n though_o they_o can_v have_v actual_a faith_n because_o they_o want_v understanding_n and_o knowledge_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o young_a age_n yet_o they_o have_v a_o certain_a seed_n or_o beginning_n of_o faith_n wrought_v in_o they_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o will_v in_o time_n come_v to_o be_v actual_a faith_n and_o this_o be_v sufficient_a unto_o such_o for_o the_o obtain_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n but_o actual_a faith_n of_o which_o i_o now_o speak_v be_v necessary_a for_o they_o that_o be_v of_o ripe_a age._n use_v 1_o use_v 1._o see_v by_o this_o doctrine_n the_o miserable_a estate_n of_o all_o unbeliever_n and_o wicked_a man_n who_o be_v destitute_a of_o faith_n they_o have_v no_o part_n in_o this_o excellent_a benefit_n of_o remission_n of_o sin_n but_o remain_v still_o in_o the_o guilt_n of_o all_o their_o sin_n and_o under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n joh._n 3._o ult_n woeful_a be_v the_o state_n of_o such_o though_o they_o have_v never_o so_o many_o outward_a privilege_n in_o this_o life_n as_o honour_n wealth_n preferment_n favour_n with_o man_n etc._n etc._n yet_o if_o they_o remain_v in_o unbelief_n all_o their_o sin_n remain_v upon_o they_o and_o so_o they_o be_v for_o the_o present_a in_o a_o damnable_a condition_n yea_o further_o though_o some_o be_v civil_o honest_a and_o just_a dealer_n with_o man_n yea_o though_o they_o be_v such_o as_o profess_v religion_n and_o come_v to_o church_n and_o outward_o conform_v to_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n yet_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o condemn_v if_o they_o want_v faith_n because_o without_o this_o they_o be_v still_o in_o the_o guilt_n of_o their_o sin_n god_n will_v never_o say_v to_o their_o soul_n that_o their_o sin_n be_v forgive_v till_o he_o see_v their_o faith_n use_v 2_o use_v 2._o how_o shall_v we_o labour_v to_o get_v some_o measure_n of_o this_o precious_a faith_n as_o the_o apostle_n peter_n call_v it_o by_o which_o we_o may_v apply_v christ_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n by_o he_o unto_o ourselves_o else_o in_o vain_a do_v god_n reach_v out_o and_o offer_v to_o we_o this_o benefit_n withal_o that_o god_n may_v be_v please_v to_o make_v his_o ordinance_n powerful_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o thou_o etc._n etc._n object_n object_n but_o my_o sin_n have_v be_v so_o great_a that_o it_o be_v hard_o for_o i_o to_o believe_v the_o pardon_n of_o they_o i_o fear_v that_o i_o shall_v not_o attain_v to_o it_o though_o i_o use_v the_o mean_n answ_n answ_n let_v not_o this_o discourage_v thou_o though_o thy_o sin_n be_v never_o so_o great_a yet_o if_o thou_o be_v true_o humble_v and_o break_v in_o heart_n for_o they_o and_o do_v unfeigned_o turn_v to_o god_n from_o they_o he_o be_v all_o man_n be_v not_o neither_o shall_v be_v actual_o pardon_v but_o only_o the_o sin_n of_o so_o many_o as_o believe_v in_o christ_n and_o repent_v true_o of_o their_o sin_n turn_v from_o they_o and_o forsake_v they_o act._n 10._o 43._o through_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n so_o many_o as_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v receive_v remission_n of_o sin_n and_o prov._n 28._o 13._o he_o that_o great_a comfort_n to_o stay_v the_o mind_n of_o such_o as_o be_v tempt_v by_o satan_n to_o think_v that_o their_o sin_n be_v so_o great_a that_o they_o can_v be_v forgive_v thus_o think_v wicked_a cain_n and_o thus_o many_o good_a christian_n though_o weak_a be_v tempt_v by_o satan_n to_o entertain_v the_o like_a thought_n such_o must_v know_v there_o be_v no_o sin_n so_o great_a but_o god_n mercy_n be_v sufficient_a to_o pardon_v it_o and_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n sufficient_a to_o purge_v away_o the_o guilt_n of_o it_o neither_o be_v it_o the_o multitude_n or_o greatness_n of_o temporal_a plague_n and_o judgement_n to_o keep_v from_o we_o a_o impenitent_a heart_n not_o to_o leave_v we_o to_o our_o own_o heart_n to_o harden_v ourselves_o in_o our_o sin_n as_o he_o suffer_v pharaoh_n and_o as_o he_o suffer_v many_o wicked_a one_o if_o there_o be_v cause_n to_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o keep_v we_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o fire_n and_o water_n and_o from_o bodily_a disease_n famine_n sword_n of_o the_o enemy_n etc._n etc._n much_o more_o cause_n to_o pray_v against_o hardness_n of_o heart_n the_o cause_n and_o forerunner_n of_o all_o judgement_n this_o be_v of_o the_o soul_n of_o their_o own_o child_n let_v all_o parent_n be_v admonish_v to_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o grievous_a sin_n that_o they_o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o it_o mark_v 10._o 14._o but_o discommendable_a that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o commendable_a be_v their_o readiness_n and_o forwardness_n to_o partake_v with_o he_o in_o suffer_v the_o cross_n which_o readiness_n they_o show_v and_o discover_v by_o this_o that_o when_o he_o ask_v they_o whether_o they_o can_v suffer_v with_o he_o that_o be_v whether_o they_o be_v able_a and_o fit_a to_o suffer_v with_o he_o they_o do_v not_o hereupon_o show_v any_o sign_n of_o unwillingness_n to_o suffer_v with_o he_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a they_o present_o profess_v their_o ability_n to_o suffer_v with_o he_o whereby_o they_o imply_v also_o their_o willingness_n etc._n etc._n that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o discommendable_a in_o their_o answer_n be_v that_o they_o discover_v too_o much_o confidence_n in_o themselves_o and_o presumption_n of_o their_o own_o strength_n and_o ability_n to_o suffer_v the_o cross_n as_o if_o they_o can_v by_o their_o own_o power_n or_o of_o themselves_o drink_v of_o that_o bitter_a cup_n when_o it_o be_v nothing_o so_o but_o all_o the_o ability_n they_o have_v be_v from_o god_n and_o from_o his_o spirit_n strengthen_v they_o thereunto_o in_o this_o respect_n therefore_o their_o answer_n be_v rash_a and_o unadvised_a when_o they_o be_v so_o ready_a to_o affirm_v that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o drink_v of_o the_o same_o cup_n with_o he_o etc._n etc._n now_o one_o cause_n as_o be_v probable_a of_o their_o forwardness_n thus_o to_o profess_v both_o their_o ability_n and_o willingness_n to_o suffer_v with_o he_o be_v the_o earnest_a desire_n they_o have_v by_o this_o mean_n if_o it_o may_v be_v to_o obtain_v their_o suit_n and_o petition_n at_o his_o hand_n observe_v 1_o observe_v 1._o from_o that_o which_o be_v commendable_a here_o in_o the_o disciple_n viz._n their_o readiness_n and_o willingness_n to_o suffer_v the_o cross_n with_o christ_n etc._n etc._n this_o teach_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v after_o their_o example_n be_v ready_a willing_a and_o forward_o to_o suffer_v the_o cross_n and_o affliction_n in_o this_o world_n for_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n when_o we_o be_v call_v to_o it_o herein_o we_o be_v to_o imitate_v these_o two_o disciple_n of_o christ_n who_o here_o profess_v and_o show_v themselves_o forward_o to_o drink_v of_o the_o cup_n of_o the_o cross_n etc._n etc._n the_o like_a forwardness_n peter_n and_o the_o rest_n show_v also_o afterward_o luke_n 22._o 33._o peter_n profess_v himself_o ready_a to_o go_v with_o he_o both_o into_o prison_n and_o to_o death_n and_o matth._n 26._o 35._o they_o all_o profess_a that_o if_o they_o
