these_o four_o particular_n first_o that_o all_o believer_n they_o be_v by_o nature_n under_o all_o iniquity_n when_o the_o text_n say_v that_o christ_n give_v himself_o to_o redeem_v they_o from_o all_o iniquity_n this_o impli_v that_o believer_n be_v under_o all_o iniquity_n what_o need_n christ_n give_v himself_o to_o redeem_v they_o from_o that_o under_o which_o they_o be_v not_o you_o shall_v find_v this_o evident_o declare_v rom._n 5._o 12._o by_o one_o man_n sin_n enter_v into_o the_o world_n and_o death_n by_o sin_n and_o so_o death_n pass_v upon_o all_o man_n for_o that_o all_o have_v sin_v and_o ephes_n 2._o 1_o 2._o 3._o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o believer_n he_o say_v of_o they_o as_o well_o as_o of_o other_o that_o they_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n and_o that_o they_o be_v by_o nature_n the_o child_n of_o wrath_n as_o well_o as_o other_o and_o that_o they_o be_v in_o time_n past_a act_v by_o the_o devil_n and_o walk_v after_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n according_a to_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n the_o spirit_n that_o now_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n and_o again_o rom._n 3._o 19_o all_o the_o world_n be_v become_v guilty_a before_o god_n all_o man_n by_o nature_n as_o well_o believer_n as_o unbeliever_n be_v all_o under_o iniquity_n first_o they_o be_v under_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n they_o break_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n continual_o second_o they_o be_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o that_o transgression_n for_o he_o that_o have_v the_o sin_n must_v have_v the_o guilt_n three_o they_o be_v under_o the_o punishment_n that_o belong_v to_o the_o breaker_n of_o the_o law_n for_o he_o that_o committeh_a sin_n and_o have_v the_o guilt_n thereof_o must_v needs_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o punishment_n here_o be_v the_o first_o thing_n considerable_a christ_n give_v himself_o to_o redeem_v believer_n from_o all_o iniquity_n therefore_o they_o be_v by_o nature_n under_o all_o iniquity_n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v how_o believer_n come_v to_o be_v under_o all_o iniquity_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o be_v bear_v under_o the_o power_n of_o iniquity_n psal_n 51._o 5._o behold_v i_o be_v shape_v in_o iniquity_n say_v a_o believer_n that_o be_v david_n and_o in_o sin_n do_v my_o mother_n warm_v i_o they_o be_v warm_v in_o the_o price_n that_o may_v ransom_n all_o believer_n consider_v but_o in_o brief_a these_o thing_n first_o god_n and_o christ_n make_v a_o compact_n or_o a_o covenant_n together_o god_n offer_v christ_n this_o who_o be_v the_o second_o person_n in_o trinity_n that_o he_o will_v become_v man_n and_o in_o man_n nature_n fulfil_v the_o law_n and_o suffer_v all_o that_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a for_o the_o breach_n of_o this_o law_n god_n promise_v christ_n that_o he_o shall_v acquit_v and_o discharge_v all_o such_o as_o believe_v in_o he_o christ_n he_o agree_v to_o this_o covenant_n and_o undertake_v it_o after_o the_o covenant_n be_v make_v he_o come_v and_o perform_v it_o he_o become_v man_n and_o give_v a_o perfect_a price_n for_o the_o full_a payment_n of_o what_o ever_o be_v due_a god_n abate_v he_o not_o a_o farthing_n the_o uttermost_a farthing_n of_o that_o which_o believer_n be_v condemn_v to_o pay_v he_o pay_v it_o he_o perfect_o keep_v the_o law_n he_o perfect_o suffer_v the_o uttermost_a of_o all_o that_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o be_v due_a to_o sin_n and_o all_o this_o be_v do_v by_o christ_n who_o be_v god_n all_o this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o second_o person_n in_o trinity_n so_o that_o now_o the_o person_n obey_v the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v infinite_o better_a than_o the_o person_n break_v the_o law_n of_o god_n the_o person_n that_o do_v suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v infinite_o better_a than_o the_o person_n that_o shall_v have_v suffer_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o they_o be_v but_o man_n but_o this_o be_v the_o very_a son_n of_o god_n so_o that_o now_o god_n satisfi_v god_n god_n pay_v the_o ransom_n to_o god_n therefore_o the_o ransom_n can_v but_o be_v complete_a and_o thus_o come_v christ_n by_o give_v of_o beside_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n so_o by_o righteousness_n be_v mean_v the_o observation_n or_o do_v of_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n thus_o you_o see_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o sin_n and_o what_o by_o righteousness_n but_o it_o be_v more_o difficult_a to_o know_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o body_n and_o what_o by_o the_o spirit_n the_o body_n be_v dead_a because_o of_o sin_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v life_n because_o of_o righteousness_n i_o take_v it_o here_o by_o the_o body_n be_v mean_v the_o body_n of_o corruption_n the_o body_n of_o sin_n that_o same_o original_a corruption_n that_o be_v in_o all_o of_o we_o by_o nature_n it_o can_v be_v understand_v of_o the_o natural_a body_n because_o of_o the_o opposition_n to_o spirit_n for_o by_o the_o spirit_n here_o can_v be_v understand_v our_o soul_n or_o our_o spirit_n for_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o any_o man_n spirit_n or_o soul_n be_v life_n to_o righteousness_n it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o it_o be_v enliven_v to_o righteousness_n but_o it_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v life_n to_o righteousness_n therefore_o seee_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n can_v be_v mean_v i_o think_v it_o be_v clear_a that_o by_o the_o the_o body_n the_o body_n of_o man_n can_v be_v mean_v but_o by_o the_o body_n i_o conceive_v as_o i_o say_v be_v mean_v the_o body_n of_o sin_n for_o so_o saint_n paul_n call_v it_o rom._n 6.6_o that_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n may_v be_v destroy_v now_o this_o original_a corruption_n be_v call_v a_o body_n in_o these_o respect_n 1._o because_o that_o it_o come_v to_o we_o by_o propagation_n from_o the_o parent_n of_o our_o body_n 2._o to_o express_v the_o baseness_n of_o it_o for_o our_o body_n be_v but_o base_a and_o vile_a as_o saint_n paul_n call_v they_o phil._n 3.21_o 3._o to_o express_v the_o fadingness_n of_o it_o for_o that_o be_v our_o comfort_n as_o our_o natural_a body_n be_v mortal_a so_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n original_a corruption_n be_v also_o mortal_a to_o all_o the_o saint_n therefore_o it_o be_v call_v flesh_n
because_o through_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n it_o be_v transitory_a to_o all_o believer_n 4._o last_o it_o be_v call_v a_o body_n because_o as_o our_o body_n be_v make_v up_o of_o many_o integral_n and_o consist_v of_o several_a member_n by_o which_o they_o act_n and_o exercise_v several_a function_n so_o also_o original_a corruption_n be_v one_o thing_n consist_v of_o many_o particular_a sin_n as_o so_o many_o integrall_a part_n or_o several_a member_n whereby_o it_o put_v forth_o itself_o in_o several_a operation_n for_o these_o and_o such_o like_a reason_n original_a corruption_n be_v call_v a_o body_n thus_o you_o see_v what_o be_v here_o mean_v by_o body_n and_o now_o it_o be_v more_o easy_a to_o understand_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n be_v life_n because_o of_o righteousness_n for_o if_o by_o the_o body_n be_v mean_v original_a corruption_n then_o by_o the_o spirit_n must_v be_v mean_v original_a righteousness_n that_o which_o be_v elsewhere_o in_o the_o scripture_n call_v the_o divine_a nature_n or_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n or_o grace_n or_o holiness_n or_o the_o like_a original_a holiness_n or_o righteousness_n be_v that_o which_o i_o take_v it_o be_v here_o mean_v by_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v so_o call_v john_n 3.6_o that_o which_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n be_v spirit_n and_o so_o in_o many_o other_o place_n now_o this_o same_o habit_n of_o holiness_n be_v call_v the_o spirit_n 1._o to_o show_v the_o excellency_n of_o it_o that_o as_o a_o spirit_n be_v a_o excellent_a thing_n far_o above_o all_o bodily_a substance_n so_o be_v holiness_n the_o excellent_a of_o god_n creature_n for_o grace_n be_v also_o a_o creature_n as_o other_o thing_n 2._o to_o show_v the_o durableness_n of_o it_o though_o sin_n shall_v die_v in_o the_o saint_n and_o be_v utter_o destroy_v yet_o grace_n shall_v never_o be_v destroy_v stroy_v nor_o cease_v in_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n 3._o it_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n of_o it_o for_o the_o object_n of_o this_o grace_n be_v spiritual_a thing_n 4._o in_o regard_n of_o the_o author_n of_o it_o it_o you_o see_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o sin_n namely_o the_o transgression_n of_o god_n law_n either_o in_o omission_n or_o commission_n what_o by_o righteousness_n the_o observation_n of_o god_n law_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o and_o second_o table_n what_o by_o the_o body_n original_a corruption_n what_o by_o the_o spirit_n the_o habit_n of_o holiness_n or_o original_a righteousness_n now_o than_o the_o whole_a amount_v to_o this_o that_o if_o so_o be_v the_o lord_n christ_n be_v in_o people_n than_o there_o be_v a_o death_n of_o sin_n in_o they_o and_o a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n thus_o much_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o word_n let_v they_o be_v take_v any_o way_n which_o way_n soever_o expositor_n can_v carry_v they_o this_o must_v be_v the_o sense_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o need_v not_o spend_v further_a time_n in_o the_o exposition_n but_o will_v fall_v direct_o upon_o the_o doctrine_n which_o be_v this_o in_o whosoever_o christ_n be_v there_o there_o be_v no_o rule_n there_o can_v be_v no_o err_v beside_o the_o rule_n thus_o in_o these_o respect_v it_o be_v that_o by_o occasion_n the_o law_n come_v to_o have_v this_o property_n to_o be_v end_n in_o hell_n but_o all_o the_o punishment_n they_o have_v for_o sin_n be_v a_o fatherly_a correcton_n it_o be_v sueh_a a_o punishment_n as_o whereby_o god_n clear_v his_o justice_n to_o the_o world_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o be_v no_o cocker_a father_n it_o be_v such_o a_o punishment_n whereby_o they_o be_v train_v fit_v and_o educate_v for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n to_o which_o christ_n have_v redeem_v they_o so_o that_o though_o god_n punish_v they_o for_o sin_n yet_o he_o never_o lay_v upon_o they_o the_o complete_a punishment_n of_o sin_n christ_n have_v redeem_v they_o from_o the_o fruit_n of_o iniquity_n
of_o it_o again_o it_o be_v constant_a not_o only_o for_o a_o time_n but_o for_o ever_o yea_o and_o there_o be_v a_o progress_n in_o it_o also_o sin_n still_o grow_v weak_a and_o the_o strength_n thereof_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o abate_v but_o where_o be_v not_o such_o progress_n where_o there_o be_v not_o a_o continuance_n in_o the_o deaths-wound_n of_o sin_n there_o the_o deaths-wound_n be_v never_o give_v to_o sin_n by_o the_o bless_a spirit_n of_o christ_n for_o howsoever_o christ_n do_v not_o kill_v the_o old_a man_n present_o yet_o he_o kill_v it_o cortain_o and_o when_o once_o always_o carry_v the_o soul_n wherein_o it_o be_v up_o to_o god_n from_o whence_o it_o come_v as_o the_o fire_n be_v heavenly_a do_v always_o move_v upward_o so_o righteousness_n because_o it_o be_v of_o god_n do_v always_o raise_v up_o the_o soul_n of_o that_o person_n in_o who_o it_o be_v towards_o god_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o righteous_a be_v describe_v to_o be_v a_o generation_n of_o they_o that_o seek_v the_o lord_n psal_n 24._o and_o psal_n 27._o 8._o the_o psalmist_n profess_v that_o he_o will_v seek_v the_o face_n of_o god_n people_z that_o have_v no_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v describe_v rom._n 7_o to_o be_v such_o as_o do_v not_o seek_v after_o god_n but_o wherever_o there_o be_v a_o life_n of_o righteousness_n there_o be_v a_o seek_v after_o god_n god_n in_o himself_o god_n for_o himself_o god_n as_o he_o be_v accomplish_v with_o his_o holy_a excellency_n and_o admirable_a attribute_n and_o perfection_n god_n as_o he_o be_v take_v he_o altogether_o be_v always_o the_o aim_n and_o scope_n end_n and_o object_n of_o the_o desire_n of_o that_o soul_n that_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n so_o that_o when_o he_o pray_v or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n or_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o whatsoever_o he_o do_v he_o seek_v after_o god_n in_o all_o and_o as_o he_o seek_v after_o god_n so_o he_o seek_v after_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n the_o favour_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n the_o presence_n and_o fellowship_n of_o god_n those_o glorious_a inheritance_n which_o be_v god_n and_o be_v call_v his_o because_o they_o be_v with_o he_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n they_o be_v the_o thing_n he_o seek_v after_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n in_o he_o second_o where_o the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n be_v there_o be_v a_o sutableness_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o a_o agreement_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n i_o beteech_v you_o observe_v this_o the_o body_n of_o righteousness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o as_o it_o be_v the_o stamp_n of_o god_n law_n there_o be_v a_o proportion_n and_o conformity_n between_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o resemblance_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o all_o they_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n this_o the_o apostle_n large_o express_v in_o that_o seven_o of_o the_o roman_n from_o the_o 15._o verse_n and_o so_o forward_o i_o consent_v say_v he_o to_o the_o law_n that_o it_o be_v good_a and_o that_o it_o be_v holy_a and_o just_a they_o that_o have_v the_o life_n of_o righteousness_n they_o do_v not_o only_o find_v a_o truth_n and_o a_o justice_n in_o god_n law_n but_o they_o do_v find_v a_o goodness_n a_o loveliness_n in_o god_n law_n there_o be_v a_o sutableness_n and_o a_o agreement_n between_o their_o spirit_n and_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n not_o only_o in_o some_o but_o in_o all_o particular_n those_o branch_n of_o god_n law_n which_o be_v most_o contrary_a to_o their_o custom_n and_o natural_a disposition_n and_o inclination_n they_o see_v they_o good_a they_o behold_v they_o amiable_a they_o find_v a_o disposition_n in_o their_o soul_n suitable_a and_o agreeable_a require_v that_o they_o desperate_o resist_v it_o and_o take_v up_o arm_n against_o it_o you_o have_v another_o passage_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o this_o purpose_n in_o phil._n 3._o many_o say_v he_o be_v the_o enemy_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n but_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v they_o who_o god_n be_v their_o belly_n who_o glory_n be_v their_o shame_n who_o mind_n earthly_a thing_n and_o condition_n he_o will_v discharge_v the_o man_n and_o let_v he_o out_o of_o prison_n he_o will_v pay_v he_o the_o full_a debt_n if_o the_o creditor_n accept_v of_o this_o offer_n and_o the_o party_n same_o death_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v to_o be_v in_o all_o those_o that_o have_v christ_n in_o they_o be_v not_o as_o i_o say_v before_o a_o utter_a destruction_n a_o plenary_a and_o full_a weaken_a and_o lessen_v in_o the_o strength_n of_o it_o therefore_o i_o say_v it_o concern_v we_o much_o to_o know_v the_o difference_n and_o i_o conceive_v you_o may_v know_v it_o by_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v these_o first_o of_o all_o where_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n be_v lessen_v and_o weaken_v
there_o no_o sin_n can_v command_v the_o whole_a soul_n but_o howsoever_o it_o may_v command_v part_n of_o the_o man_n yet_o there_o be_v no_o part_n that_o will_v be_v whole_o command_v by_o it_o this_o saint_n paul_n express_o show_v rom._n 7._o from_o the_o 15._o verse_n to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o chapter_n it_o be_v true_a say_v he_o with_o my_o flesh_n that_o be_v with_o my_o unregenerate_a part_n for_o by_o flesh_n there_o he_o do_v not_o mean_v his_o body_n but_o the_o natural_a part_n both_o of_o soul_n and_o body_n i_o serve_v the_o law_n of_o sin_n but_o with_o my_o mind_n that_o be_v with_o the_o regenerate_a part_n of_o soul_n and_o body_n i_o serve_v the_o law_n of_o god_n wherever_o there_o be_v a_o death_n of_o sin_n there_o will_v be_v a_o part_n in_o every_o part_n of_o a_o man_n that_o will_v not_o be_v subject_v or_o command_v by_o any_o sin_n this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o 1_o joh_fw-mi 3._o 9_o whosoever_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n do_v not_o commit_v sin_n for_o his_o seed_n remain_v in_o he_o and_o he_o can_v sin_v because_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n that_o be_v so_o far_o as_o he_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n that_o same_o part_n in_o he_o which_o be_v the_o seed_n of_o god_n the_o offspring_n of_o god_n it_o can_v sin_v sin_n can_v command_v that_o though_o it_o command_v all_o the_o rest_n thereupon_o it_o be_v call_v the_o divine_a nature_n and_o the_o spirit_n because_o as_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o divine_a nature_n will_v not_o be_v master_v by_o corruption_n so_o the_o regenerate_v part_n of_o a_o man_n will_v not_o be_v command_v by_o any_o sin_n whatsoever_o second_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o fruit_n of_o the_o former_a and_o a_o further_a expression_n of_o it_o where_o there_o be_v this_o death_n of_o sin_n there_o sin_n be_v never_o commit_v with_o full_a consent_n delight_n and_o purpose_n of_o heart_n they_o that_o have_v sin_n alive_a in_o they_o drink_v down_o iniquity_n like_o fruitfulness_n of_o sin_n must_v needs_o be_v diminish_v there_o be_v a_o great_a alteration_n wrought_v in_o their_o will_n and_o affection_n in_o their_o thought_n word_n and_o action_n in_o their_o general_n and_o particular_a call_n in_o their_o duty_n towards_o god_n and_o man_n they_o do_v not_o bring_v forth_o so_o many_o fruit_n of_o sin_n as_o they_o be_v wont_a at_o least_o they_o do_v now_o for_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o their_o life_n refrain_v from_o bear_v the_o fruit_n of_o such_o sin_n as_o be_v gross_a or_o scandalous_a four_o the_o godly_a in_o who_o sin_n be_v dead_a do_v not_o only_o cease_v bear_v the_o fruit_n of_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n but_o oftentimes_o though_o not_o perpetual_o be_v able_a to_o deny_v and_o forbear_v the_o commit_n of_o any_o particular_a sin_n even_o those_o that_o be_v most_o natural_a to_o they_o most_o strong_a in_o they_o that_o be_v wont_a to_o catch_v they_o on_o a_o sudden_a and_o to_o prevail_v over_o they_o even_o those_o the_o godly_a have_v power_n oftentimes_o to_o resist_v and_o overcome_v a_o man_n that_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n that_o have_v sin_n alive_a in_o he_o be_v describe_v ephes_n 2._o 3._o to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o do_v fulfil_v the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o therein_o appear_v the_o life_n of_o sin_n when_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v always_o fulfil_v but_o now_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o imperfect_a death_n of_o sin_n appear_v in_o this_o that_o not_o only_o some_o of_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v never_o fulfil_v but_o even_o all_o the_o desire_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v always_o more_o or_o less_o cross_v and_o not_o fulfil_v and_o this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o that_o gal._n 5._o 17._o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v i_o suppose_v that_o latter_a clause_n you_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o you_o will_v be_v not_o only_o mean_v of_o the_o spirit_n that_o by_o the_o flesh_n the_o spirit_n be_v disable_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o it_o will_v but_o it_o be_v also_o mean_v of_o the_o flesh_n that_o by_o reason_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o flesh_n can_v do_v the_o thing_n it_o will_v that_o look_v as_o sometime_o the_o remnant_n of_o the_o flesh_n do_v hinder_v the_o spirit_n that_o it_o can_v do_v as_o it_o will_v so_o also_o the_o beginning_n of_o the_o spirit_n do_v hinder_v the_o flesh_n that_o in_o nothing_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v the_o thing_n it_o will_v this_o be_v a_o four_o effect_v whereby_o the_o weaken_n of_o corruption_n do_v appear_v that_o sin_n be_v not_o able_a to_o work_v in_o we_o that_o which_o it_o will_v no_o not_o in_o any_o particular_a whatsoever_o but_o in_o those_o sin_n that_o be_v most_o natural_a many_o time_n there_o be_v a_o deny_v of_o they_o and_o a_o forbear_n to_o commit_v they_o and_o to_o fulfil_v the_o desire_n of_o they_o now_o to_o these_o you_o must_v in_o the_o last_o place_n add_v that_o which_o be_v a_o property_n accompany_v all_o of_o they_o and_o be_v the_o last_o particular_a whereby_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n appear_v and_o that_o be_v that_o this_o same_o weaken_n and_o lessen_v of_o corruption_n discover_v in_o these_o effect_n that_o i_o have_v open_v unto_o you_o be_v both_o universal_a and_o also_o durable_a and_o permanent_a first_o it_o be_v universal_a there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o weaken_n and_o lessen_v of_o corruption_n in_o some_o part_n but_o in_o all_o and_o herein_o it_o differ_v from_o all_o counterfeit_a death_n of_o sin_n in_o which_o there_o may_v be_v a_o weaken_n of_o some_o sin_n yet_o not_o of_o all_o but_o though_o some_o happy_o be_v weak_a than_o they_o be_v other_o be_v as_o strong_a as_o ever_o but_o wherever_o this_o death_n of_o sin_n be_v indeed_o there_o sin_n be_v universal_o weaken_v and_o this_o also_o will_v appear_v in_o all_o the_o particular_n and_o part_n
discouragement_n which_o of_o all_o other_o be_v the_o great_a hinderer_n of_o our_o endeavour_n after_o holiness_n and_o may_v happy_o dishearten_v these_o roman_n from_o yield_a obedience_n to_o this_o exhortation_n for_o they_o may_v think_v with_o themselves_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o keep_v sin_n from_o reign_v in_o they_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a for_o they_o to_o endeavour_v to_o do_v what_o he_o have_v exhort_v they_o unto_o to_o prevent_v this_o discouragement_n the_o apostle_n in_o this_o verse_n that_o i_o have_v read_v unto_o you_o annex_v a_o promise_n to_o that_o his_o exhortation_n and_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n asâ—ureth_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v attain_v to_o that_o which_o he_o have_v command_v they_o to_o labour_v for_o he_o have_v exhort_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o let_v sin_n reign_v in_o they_o and_o here_o he_o promise_v that_o sin_n shall_v not_o reign_v over_o they_o before_o i_o come_v give_v you_o divers_a instance_n thereof_o but_o that_o i_o only_o purpose_v to_o touch_v this_o point_n and_o no_o more_o because_o you_o see_v i_o gather_v it_o from_o the_o coherence_n yet_o i_o will_v name_v you_o one_o or_o two_o for_o the_o full_a clear_n thereof_o god_n command_v his_o people_n to_o fear_v his_o name_n as_o you_o have_v it_o often_o in_o the_o scripture_n and_o in_o jer._n 32.39_o he_o promise_v to_o give_v they_o a_o heart_n to_o fear_v he_o i_o will_v give_v they_o say_v he_o there_o one_o heart_n that_o they_o may_v fear_v i_o for_o ever_o for_o the_o good_a of_o they_o and_o their_o child_n after_o they_o the_o lord_n command_v his_o people_n to_o love_v he_o to_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o he_o my_o son_n give_v i_o thy_o heart_n as_o you_o have_v it_o in_o the_o proverb_n and_o the_o lord_n promise_v that_o he_o will_v make_v they_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o he_o hosea_n 2.14_o i_o will_v allure_v she_o and_o bring_v she_o into_o the_o wilderness_n and_o speak_v comfortable_o to_o she_o the_o word_n be_v i_o will_v speak_v to_o her_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v in_o some_o of_o the_o margin_n of_o your_o bibles_n it_o be_v a_o metaphor_n allude_v to_o the_o manner_n of_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o have_v the_o conjugal_a affection_n of_o such_o a_o maid_n do_v so_o set_v himself_o to_o allure_v she_o and_o draw_v she_o as_o to_o bring_v her_o heart_n for_o to_o love_v he_o so_o faith_n the_o lord_n as_o i_o have_v command_v my_o people_n to_o give_v i_o their_o heart_n i_o will_v allure_v they_o and_o speak_v to_o their_o heart_n so_o as_o i_o will_v make_v they_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o i_o i_o need_v not_o give_v you_o any_o further_a instance_n you_o see_v the_o point_n be_v clear_a and_o direct_o issue_v from_o the_o coherence_n of_o the_o text_n with_o the_o forego_n word_n and_o by_o these_o place_n and_o the_o like_a you_o may_v see_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n viz._n god_n gracious_a manner_n of_o deal_n with_o his_o child_n that_o he_o pmise_v to_o make_v they_o able_a to_o do_v whatsoever_o it_o be_v that_o he_o command_v they_o to_o do_v and_o this_o my_o brethren_n be_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o of_o grace_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n in_o the_o law_n which_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o lord_n command_v many_o thing_n but_o promise_v to_o help_v they_o in_o nothing_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n which_o be_v the_o gospel_n the_o lord_n command_v nothing_o but_o he_o promise_v to_o make_v they_o able_a to_o do_v it_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o the_o ground_n or_o reason_n of_o god_n deal_n thus_o with_o his_o child_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v a_o double_a reason_n of_o it_o the_o that_o whatsoever_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o his_o child_n that_o he_o have_v from_o all_o eternity_n purpose_v to_o his_o child_n god_n therefore_o have_v purpose_v this_o that_o his_o child_n shall_v keep_v his_o commandment_n in_o a_o evangelicall_n manner_n he_o must_v make_v they_o able_a to_o do_v it_o for_o except_o god_n help_v they_o to_o perform_v what_o he_o require_v it_o be_v this_o be_v express_v in_o the_o scripture_n to_o the_o end_n that_o no_o man_n may_v glory_v in_o himself_o but_o that_o all_o glory_v may_v be_v in_o christ_n god_n have_v decree_v this_o that_o no_o obedience_n shall_v be_v wrought_v by_o any_o that_o be_v acceptable_a but_o what_o shall_v come_v from_o christ_n by_o faith_n now_o if_o it_o come_v from_o christ_n by_o faith_n than_o it_o must_v come_v by_o a_o promise_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n but_o a_o promise_n and_o a_o divine_a promise_n to_o the_o end_n therefore_o they_o may_v have_v a_o promise_n god_n have_v promise_v to_o enable_v they_o to_o all_o he_o command_v that_o so_o they_o by_o faith_n rest_v upon_o this_o promise_n they_o may_v come_v to_o this_o obedience_n by_o faith_n and_o so_o may_v have_v nothing_o to_o glory_n in_o themselves_o here_o be_v the_o two_o reason_n of_o the_o point_n and_o so_o you_o see_v the_o observation_n clear_a that_o god_n command_v his_o people_n nothing_o but_o he_o promise_v to_o make_v they_o able_a to_o perform_v it_o there_o be_v only_o this_o caution_n to_o be_v add_v that_o howsoever_o god_n promise_v to_o enable_v his_o people_n
obey_v it_o they_o grieve_v when_o they_o can_v obey_v it_o now_o this_o according_a to_o the_o gospel_n be_v count_v obedience_n thus_o christ_n have_v deliver_v we_o from_o the_o law_n as_o it_o do_v occasion_n sin_n to_o reign_v in_o we_o again_o second_o christ_n have_v deliver_v we_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n for_o christ_n have_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n and_o wrath_n of_o god_n for_o our_o transgress_v the_o law_n the_o law_n can_v have_v no_o force_n to_o curse_v we_o here_o be_v the_o first_o reason_n why_o sin_n can_v have_v dominion_n over_o god_n people_n because_o christ_n have_v satisfy_v god_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n redeem_v they_o from_o under_o the_o law_n second_o because_o all_o that_o be_v christ_n people_n must_v be_v like_a unto_o christ_n thereupon_o it_o be_v that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v say_v to_o put_v on_o christ_n they_o be_v say_v to_o live_v the_o life_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v the_o member_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v the_o brethren_n of_o christ_n the_o branch_n of_o christ_n all_o these_o metaphor_n be_v to_o show_v we_o that_o there_o be_v a_o likeness_n between_o christ_n and_o all_o that_o be_v his_o people_n now_o as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v like_o christ_n in_o other_o thing_n so_o in_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o sin_n have_v no_o dominion_n over_o christ_n it_o never_o lord_v over_o he_o to_o obedience_n second_o death_n and_o damnation_n never_o have_v power_n over_o christ_n first_o sin_n have_v no_o dominion_n no_o power_n over_o he_o christ_n indeed_o be_v oft_o tempt_v to_o sin_n but_o he_o never_o obey_v sin_n the_o world_n set_v itself_o to_o ensnare_v he_o the_o devil_n set_v himself_o to_o draw_v he_o into_o sin_n but_o neither_o world_n nor_o devil_n can_v never_o have_v any_o power_n over_o he_o to_o bring_v he_o under_o sin_n indeed_o christ_n be_v under_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n for_o he_o bear_v our_o transgression_n but_o christ_n be_v never_o under_o the_o reign_n of_o sin_n sin_n have_v never_o any_o power_n over_o he_o to_o make_v he_o obey_v it_o in_o this_o must_v all_o the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v like_a unto_o christ_n be_v a_o double_a obedience_n the_o one_o be_v when_o as_o sin_n be_v obey_v at_o all_o the_o other_o be_v when_o as_o sin_n be_v obey_v with_o full_a consent_n of_o the_o will_n the_o first_o when_o sin_n be_v obey_v at_o all_o though_o it_o be_v with_o grief_n and_o opposition_n from_o this_o obedience_n of_o sin_n shall_v the_o people_n of_o god_n be_v deliver_v in_o due_a time_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v after_o death_n than_o they_o shall_v be_v perfect_o like_o christ_n when_o they_o shall_v be_v perfect_o free_v from_o do_v the_o command_n of_o sin_n but_o from_o that_o other_o certain_a company_n of_o widow_n that_o be_v ever_o learning_n certain_o than_o you_o will_v think_v that_o they_o be_v good_a scholar_n no_o that_o they_o be_v not_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n what_o always_o learning_n up_o early_o and_o down_o late_o and_o yet_o never_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n the_o apostle_n tell_v you_o in_o the_o sixth_o verse_n they_o be_v lade_v with_o sin_n and_o lead_v about_o with_o divers_a lust_n and_o vers_fw-la 8._o they_o be_v of_o corrupt_a mind_n reprobate_a concern_v the_o faith_n or_o as_o it_o be_v in_o reason_n why_o they_o thrive_v not_o observe_v it_o they_o be_v lade_v with_o lust_n and_o lead_v about_o with_o divers_a pleasure_n their_o heart_n cleave_v close_o to_o some_o corruption_n they_o harbour_v some_o bosom_n lust_n in_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v a_o form_n of_o godliness_n but_o they_o take_v not_o up_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n because_o it_o will_v remove_v and_o dis-place_n those_o lust_n that_o they_o love_v so_o well_o i_o beseech_v you_o observe_v that_o place_n isa_n 6.9_o 10._o when_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o purpose_n to_o overthrow_v the_o people_n be_v with_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o sinner_n when_o as_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n cleave_v to_o a_o corruption_n when_o as_o a_o man_n affection_n be_v glue_v unto_o it_o so_o that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o it_o let_v it_o be_v what_o lust_n so_o ever_o it_o will_v be_v you_o shall_v ever_o find_v he_o feed_v upon_o it_o the_o proud_a man_n continual_o feed_v himself_o upon_o his_o pride_n his_o mind_n be_v ever_o take_v up_o with_o the_o thought_n of_o this_o or_o that_o fashion_n with_o this_o or_o that_o way_n of_o attire_v and_o adorn_v himself_o the_o adulterer_n be_v still_o rest_v for_o daily_a exercise_n and_o labour_n spend_v a_o man_n and_o therefore_o we_o know_v those_o that_o will_v feed_v any_o creature_n fat_a put_v it_o up_o so_o when_o a_o man_n be_v resolve_v to_o contiune_n in_o that_o course_n wherein_o he_o be_v be_v settle_v on_o his_o lees_n have_v set_v up_o his_o staff_n he_o will_v go_v no_o further_o but_o there_o he_o will_v stay_v such_o a_o man_n heart_n be_v fat_a and_o what_o follow_v his_o eye_n will_v be_v blind_a whatsoever_o shall_v come_v from_o the_o minister_n to_o thwart_v that_o sinful_a disposition_n of_o he_o to_o cross_v that_o lust_n which_o lie_v in_o his_o bosom_n any_o way_n to_o disease_v he_o or_o stir_v he_o off_o his_o dregs_o though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o clear_a and_o plain_a and_o deliver_v with_o never_o so_o much_o evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n itself_o yet_o he_o care_v not_o for_o it_o he_o be_v resolve_v to_o do_v what_o he_o please_v and_o to_o take_v his_o own_o course_n let_v they_o all_o say_v what_o they_o will_n hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o in_o these_o day_n of_o light_n wherein_o the_o mean_n of_o knowledge_n run_v through_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o land_n and_o abound_v as_o the_o river_n from_o the_o sea_n and_o yet_o man_n remain_v stark_o blind_a in_o the_o mystery_n of_o salvation_n and_o altogether_o unreformed_a in_o their_o life_n do_v but_o observe_v a_o little_a the_o temper_n of_o man_n spirit_n and_o you_o shall_v find_v it_o general_o to_o be_v this_o those_o truth_n out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o they_o conceive_v to_o cross_v their_o quiet_n and_o disturb_v their_o peace_n they_o will_v not_o endure_v their_o heart_n be_v resolve_v to_o be_v at_o peace_n and_o at_o liberty_n come_v what_o come_v will_v and_o therefore_o whatsoever_o truth_n it_o be_v that_o cause_v any_o disquietness_n or_o disturbance_n in_o they_o away_o with_o it_o oh_o say_v they_o i_o will_v have_v none_o of_o that_o i_o have_v do_v with_o that_o point_n sure_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n that_o such_o man_n be_v not_o inform_v see_v they_o have_v shut_v their_o eye_n and_o will_v not_o see_v oh_o say_v but_o the_o main_a ground_n of_o his_o contempt_n lie_v here_o he_o must_v have_v his_o sin_n he_o will_v take_v his_o liberty_n he_o will_v enjoy_v himself_o what_o ever_o be_v say_v to_o the_o contrary_n and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o god_n in_o his_o just_a judgement_n see_v that_o such_o man_n will_v not_o entertain_v the_o truth_n in_o the_o â—ove_n thereof_o that_o they_o may_v be_v
