providence_n of_o god_n secure_v to_o they_o if_o they_o be_v not_o want_v to_o themselves_o one_o of_o these_o two_o way_n either_o by_o proportion_v the_o temptation_n to_o their_o strength_n or_o if_o it_o exceed_v that_o by_o minister_a new_a strength_n and_o support_v to_o they_o by_o the_o secret_a and_o extraordinary_a aid_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n first_o by_o proportion_v the_o temptation_n to_o their_o strength_n order_v thing_n so_o by_o his_o secret_a and_o wise_a providence_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v assault_v by_o any_o temptation_n which_o be_v beyond_o their_o strength_n to_o resist_v and_o overcome_v and_o herein_o the_o security_n of_o good_a man_n do_v ordinary_o consist_v and_o the_o very_o best_a of_o we_o those_o who_o have_v the_o firm_a and_o most_o resolute_a virtue_n be_v in_o infinite_a danger_n if_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n do_v not_o take_v this_o care_n of_o we_o for_o a_o temptation_n may_v set_v upon_o the_o best_a man_n with_o so_o steadfast_a and_o confirm_v in_o resolution_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n to_o try_v if_o he_o can_v work_v upon_o their_o fear_n and_o shake_v their_o constancy_n and_o fidelity_n to_o god_n and_o goodness_n that_o way_n and_o all_o this_o he_o do_v with_o a_o direct_a design_n and_o earnest_a desire_n to_o seduce_v man_n from_o their_o duty_n and_o to_o betray_v they_o to_o sin_n but_o thus_o god_n tempt_v no_o man_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n mean_v that_o no_o man_n when_o he_o be_v tempt_v be_v tempt_v of_o god_n god_n have_v no_o design_n to_o seduce_v any_o man_n to_o sin_n he_o often_o prove_v the_o obedience_n of_o man_n and_o suffer_v they_o to_o fall_v into_o divers_a temptation_n for_o the_o trial_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o exercise_v of_o their_o obedience_n and_o other_o virtue_n and_o he_o permit_v bad_a man_n to_o be_v assault_v with_o great_a temptation_n and_o as_o a_o punishment_n of_o their_o former_a obstinacy_n and_o impiety_n withdraw_v the_o aid_n and_o assistance_n of_o his_o grace_n from_o they_o and_o leave_v they_o to_o their_o own_o weakness_n and_o folly_n but_o not_o so_o as_o to_o take_v away_o all_o restraint_n of_o his_o grace_n even_o from_o bad_a man_n unless_o it_o be_v upon_o very_o high_a provocation_n and_o a_o long_a and_o obstinate_a continuance_n in_o sin_n but_o god_n never_o tempt_v any_o man_n with_o any_o intention_n to_o seduce_v he_o to_o sin_n and_o with_o a_o desire_n he_o shall_v do_v wicked_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o instrument_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v far_o from_o god_n to_o tempt_v any_o man_n and_o whenever_o in_o the_o ordinary_a course_n and_o by_o the_o common_a permission_n of_o his_o providence_n man_n fall_v into_o namely_o that_o god_n tempt_v man_n and_o have_v show_v as_o clear_o as_o i_o can_v how_o it_o be_v to_o be_v limit_v and_o understand_v i_o now_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n which_o i_o propound_v to_o consider_v viz._n the_o manner_n in_o which_o the_o apostle_n reject_v this_o proposition_n let_v no_o man_n say_v when_o he_o be_v tempt_v i_o be_o tempt_v of_o god_n by_o which_o manner_n of_o speak_v he_o insinuate_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o lay_v their_o fault_n upon_o god_n for_o when_o he_o say_v let_v no_o man_n say_v so_o he_o intimate_v that_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o say_v thus_o and_o it_o be_v probable_a some_o do_v say_v so_o to_o excuse_v themselves_o for_o their_o desert_v their_o religion_n upon_o the_o temptation_n of_o persecution_n and_o suffer_v it_o be_v not_o unlikely_a that_o man_n may_v lay_v the_o fault_n upon_o god_n providence_n which_o expose_v they_o to_o these_o difficult_a trial_n and_o thereby_o tempt_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o religion_n but_o however_o this_o be_v we_o find_v it_o very_o natural_a to_o man_n to_o transfer_v their_o fault_n upon_o other_o man_n be_v natural_o sensible_a when_o they_o offend_v and_o do_v contrary_a to_o their_o duty_n and_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n of_o which_o man_n will_v be_v glad_a to_o ease_v themselves_o as_o much_o as_o they_o can_v and_o they_o think_v it_o be_v a_o mitigation_n and_o excuse_n of_o their_o fault_n if_o they_o do_v not_o proceed_v only_o from_o themselves_o but_o from_o the_o violence_n and_o compulsion_n the_o give_v to_o be_v with_o i_o she_o give_v i_o of_o the_o tree_n and_o i_o do_v eat_v the_o woman_n who_o thou_o give_v to_o be_v with_o i_o he_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o derive_v the_o fault_n upon_o god_n and_o though_o this_o be_v very_o unreasonable_a yet_o it_o seem_v it_o be_v very_o natural_a man_n will_v fain_o have_v the_o pleasure_n of_o commit_v sin_n but_o then_o they_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o remove_v as_o much_o of_o the_o trouble_n and_o guilt_n of_o it_o from_o themselves_o as_o they_o can_v second_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n which_o the_o apostle_n here_o use_v do_v insinuate_v further_o to_o we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o false_a but_o a_o impious_a assertion_n to_o say_v that_o god_n tempt_v man_n to_o sin_n he_o speak_v of_o it_o not_o only_o as_o a_o thing_n unfit_a to_o be_v say_v but_o fit_a to_o be_v reject_v with_o the_o great_a indignation_n let_v no_o man_n say_v that_o be_v far_o be_v it_o from_o we_o to_o affirm_v any_o thing_n so_o impious_a and_o so_o dishonourable_a to_o god_n for_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o contrary_a to_o the_o holy_a and_o righteous_a nature_n of_o god_n and_o to_o those_o plain_a declaration_n which_o he_o have_v make_v of_o himself_o than_o to_o seduce_v man_n to_o wickedness_n and_o therefore_o no_o man_n that_o have_v any_o regard_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n can_v entertain_v the_o least_o suspicion_n of_o his_o have_v any_o hand_n in_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n or_o give_v heed_n to_o any_o principle_n or_o doctrine_n from_o whence_o so_o odious_a and_o abominable_a a_o consequence_n may_v be_v draw_v i_o proceed_v to_o the_o three_o thing_n i_o propound_v to_o consider_v viz._n the_o reason_n or_o argument_n which_o the_o apostle_n bring_v against_o this_o impious_a suggestion_n that_o god_n can_v be_v tempt_v with_o evil_a and_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v imagine_v that_o he_o shall_v tempt_v any_o man_n to_o it_o let_v no_o man_n say_v when_o he_o be_v tempt_v i_o be_o tempt_v of_o god_n for_o god_n can_v be_v tempt_v with_o evil_a neither_o tempt_v he_o any_o man._n and_o in_o speak_v to_o this_o i_o shall_v first_o consider_v the_o strength_n and_o force_n of_o this_o argument_n and_o second_o the_o nature_n and_o kind_a of_o it_o first_o the_o strength_n and_o force_n of_o this_o argument_n god_n can_v be_v tempt_v with_o evil_a neither_o tempt_v he_o any_o which_o it_o be_v ground_v that_o god_n can_v be_v tempt_v by_o evil_a second_o the_o consequence_n that_o clear_o follow_v from_o it_o and_o that_o be_v that_o because_o god_n can_v be_v tempt_v by_o evil_a therefore_o he_o can_v tempt_v any_o man_n to_o it_o first_o we_o will_v consider_v the_o proposition_n upon_o which_o this_o argument_n be_v build_v and_o that_o be_v that_o god_n can_v be_v other_o as_o above_o any_o occasion_n of_o be_v contemn_v by_o they_o he_o grudge_v no_o man_n happiness_n and_o therefore_o can_v tempt_v man_n to_o sin_n out_o of_o a_o desire_n to_o see_v they_o tempt_v he_o any_o man._n he_o do_v not_o reject_v this_o impious_a proposition_n bare_o upon_o his_o own_o authority_n but_o he_o argue_v against_o it_o from_o the_o nature_n and_o perfection_n of_o god_n and_o therein_o appeal_v to_o the_o common_a notion_n of_o mankind_n concern_v god_n we_o may_v very_o well_o have_v rest_v in_o his_o authority_n be_v a_o apostle_n commissioned_n by_o our_o saviour_n and_o extraordinary_o assist_v and_o witness_v to_o by_o the_o miraculous_a gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n wherewith_o he_o be_v endow_v but_o he_o condescend_v to_o give_v a_o reason_n of_o what_o he_o say_v and_o appeal_v to_o the_o common_a principle_n of_o mankind_n for_o all_o man_n will_v ready_o agree_v to_o this_o that_o god_n have_v all_o imaginable_a perfection_n but_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a imperfection_n to_o be_v liable_a to_o be_v tempt_v to_o evil_a and_o therefore_o god_n can_v be_v tempt_v to_o evil._n and_o if_o so_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a that_o he_o shall_v now_o in_o this_o method_n of_o argue_v the_o apostle_n teach_v we_o one_o of_o the_o sure_a way_n of_o reason_v in_o religion_n namely_o from_o the_o natural_a notion_n which_o man_n have_v of_o god_n so_o that_o all_o doctrine_n plain_o contrary_a to_o those_o natural_a notion_n which_o man_n have_v of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v reject_v what_o authority_n soever_o they_o pretend_v to_o whatever_o plain_o derogate_v from_o the_o goodness_n or_o justice_n of_o god_n or_o any_o other_o of_o his_o perfection_n be_v certain_o false_a what_o authority_n soever_o it_o may_v claim_v from_o the_o judgement_n of_o learned_a and_o pious_a man_n yea_o though_o it_o pretend_v to_o be_v countenance_v from_o the_o text_n and_o expression_n of_o holy_a scripture_n because_o nothing_o can_v be_v entertain_v as_o a_o divine_a revelation_n which_o plain_o contradict_v the_o common_a natural_a notion_n which_o mankind_n have_v of_o god_n for_o all_o reason_v about_o divine_a revelation_n and_o the_o natural_a notion_n which_o man_n have_v of_o god_n such_o as_o clear_o contradict_v his_o holiness_n or_o goodness_n or_o justice_n or_o do_v by_o plain_a and_o undeniable_a consequence_n make_v god_n the_o author_n of_o sin_n or_o the_o like_a because_o the_o very_a attempt_n to_o prove_v any_o such_o thing_n out_o of_o scripture_n do_v strike_v at_o the_o divine_a authority_n of_o those_o book_n for_o if_o they_o be_v from_o god_n it_o be_v certain_a they_o can_v contain_v no_o such_o thing_n so_o that_o no_o man_n ought_v to_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v seduce_v into_o any_o such_o opinion_n upon_o pretence_n that_o there_o be_v expression_n in_o scripture_n which_o seem_v to_o countenance_v they_o for_o if_o they_o real_o do_v so_o the_o consequence_n will_v not_o be_v the_o confirm_v of_o such_o opinion_n but_o the_o weaken_n of_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o scripture_n itself_o for_o just_a so_o many_o argument_n as_o any_o man_n can_v draw_v from_o scripture_n for_o any_o such_o opinion_n so_o many_o weapon_n he_o put_v into_o the_o hanâ—s_n of_o atheist_n against_o the_o scripture_n itself_o i_o do_v not_o speak_v this_o as_o if_o i_o think_v there_o be_v any_o ground_n from_o scripture_n for_o any_o such_o doctrine_n i_o be_o very_o certain_a there_o be_v not_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o particular_a expression_n which_o to_o prejudice_v man_n may_v seem_v to_o import_v any_o such_o thing_n every_o man_n ought_v to_o govern_v himself_o in_o the_o interpretation_n of_o such_o passage_n by_o what_o be_v clear_a and_o plain_a and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o main_a scope_n and_o tenor_n of_o the_o bible_n and_o to_o those_o natural_a notion_n which_o man_n have_v of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o perfection_n for_o when_o all_o be_v do_v this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o sure_a way_n of_o reason_v in_o religion_n and_o whoever_o guide_v himself_o and_o steer_v by_o this_o compass_n can_v never_o err_v much_o but_o whoever_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v lead_v away_o by_o the_o appearance_n of_o some_o more_o obscure_a phrase_n in_o the_o expression_n of_o scripture_n and_o the_o gloss_n of_o man_n upon_o they_o without_o regard_n to_o this_o rule_n may_v run_v into_o the_o great_a delusion_n may_v wander_v eternal_o and_o lose_v himself_o in_o one_o mistake_v after_o another_o and_o shall_v never_o find_v his_o way_n out_o of_o this_o endless_a labyrinth_n but_o by_o this_o clue_n if_o st._n james_n have_v not_o be_v a_o apostle_n the_o argument_n which_o he_o use_v will_v have_v convince_v any_o reasonable_a man_n that_o god_n tempt_v no_o man_n to_o sin_n because_o he_o can_v be_v tempt_v with_o evil_a himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v unreasonable_a to_o imagine_v he_o shall_v tempt_v any_o man._n for_o he_o argue_v from_o such_o with_o ease_n be_v a_o great_a temptation_n to_o they_o to_o quit_v their_o religion_n by_o this_o bait_n they_o be_v catch_v when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v proportionable_o in_o all_o other_o sort_n of_o temptation_n man_n be_v betray_v by_o themselves_o and_o the_o temptation_n without_o have_v a_o party_n within_o they_o with_o which_o it_o hold_v a_o secret_a correspondence_n and_o which_o be_v ready_a to_o yield_v and_o give_v consent_n to_o it_o so_o that_o it_o be_v our_o own_o consent_n and_o treachery_n to_o ourselves_o that_o make_v any_o temptation_n master_n of_o we_o and_o without_o that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v overcome_v every_o man_n be_v tempt_v when_o he_o be_v draw_v aside_o of_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o entice_v it_o be_v the_o lust_n of_o man_n comply_v with_o the_o temptation_n which_o be_v offer_v to_o we_o which_o render_v they_o effectual_a and_o give_v they_o the_o victory_n over_o we_o in_o the_o handle_n of_o this_o argument_n i_o shall_v from_o these_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n observe_v to_o you_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n do_v here_o acquit_v god_n from_o any_o hand_n in_o tempt_a man_n to_o sin_n so_o he_o do_v not_o ascribe_v the_o prevalency_n of_o temptation_n to_o the_o devil_n second_o that_o he_o ascribe_v the_o prevalency_n of_o temptation_n to_o the_o lust_n and_o vicious_a inclination_n of_o man_n which_o seduce_v they_o to_o a_o compliance_n with_o the_o temptation_n that_o be_v present_v to_o they_o every_o man_n be_v tempt_v when_o he_o be_v draw_v aside_o of_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o entice_v these_o two_o observation_n shall_v be_v the_o subject_n of_o my_o present_a discourse_n first_o that_o as_o the_o apostle_n do_v here_o acquit_v god_n from_o any_o hand_n in_o tempt_a mâ—n_z to_o sin_n so_o he_o do_v not_o ascribe_v the_o prevalency_n and_o efficacy_n of_o temptation_n to_o the_o devil_n that_o he_o acquit_v god_n i_o have_v show_v at_o large_a in_o my_o former_a discourse_n it_o be_v evident_a likewise_o that_o he_o do_v not_o ascribe_v the_o efficacy_n and_o prevalency_n of_o temptation_n to_o the_o devil_n for_o the_o apostle_n in_o this_o discourse_n of_o his_o concern_v temptation_n make_v no_o express_a mention_n of_o the_o devil_n he_o suppose_v indeed_o that_o bait_n be_v lay_v for_o man_n every_o man_n be_v tempt_v when_o he_o be_v draw_v aside_o of_o his_o own_o lust_n and_o entice_v i_o e._n when_o he_o play_v with_o the_o bait_n that_o be_v lay_v for_o he_o and_o swallow_v they_o and_o the_o scripture_n elsewhere_o frequent_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o devil_n be_v very_o active_a and_o busy_a to_o tempt_v man_n and_o be_v continual_o lay_v bait_n before_o they_o but_o their_o own_o lust_n be_v the_o cause_n why_o they_o be_v catch_v by_o they_o and_o i_o do_v the_o rather_o insist_v upon_o this_o because_o man_n be_v apt_a to_o lay_v great_a load_n upon_o the_o devil_n in_o the_o business_n of_o temptation_n hope_v thereby_o either_o whole_o or_o at_o least_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n to_o excuse_v themselves_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v here_o consider_v how_o far_o the_o devil_n by_o his_o temptation_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o sin_n which_o man_n by_o compliance_n with_o those_o temptation_n be_v draw_v into_o first_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o devil_n be_v very_o active_a and_o busy_a to_o minister_v to_o they_o the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o temptation_n to_o it_o for_o ever_o since_o he_o fall_v from_o god_n partly_o out_o of_o enmity_n to_o he_o and_o partly_o out_o of_o envy_n and_o malice_n to_o mankind_n he_o have_v make_v it_o his_o great_a business_n and_o employment_n to_o seduce_v man_n to_o sin_n and_o to_o this_o end_n he_o walk_v up_o and_o down_o the_o earth_n and_o watch_v all_o occasion_n and_o opportunity_n to_o tempt_v man_n to_o sin_n and_o so_o far_o as_o his_o power_n reach_v and_o god_n permit_v he_o he_o lay_v bait_n and_o temptation_n before_o they_o in_o all_o their_o way_n present_v they_o wiâ—h_v the_o occasion_n and_o opportunity_n to_o sin_n and_o with_o such_o bait_n and_o allurement_n as_o be_v most_o suitable_a to_o their_o temper_n and_o most_o likely_a to_o prevail_v with_o their_o particular_a inclination_n and_o as_o often_o as_o he_o can_v surprise_v man_n with_o these_o at_o the_o easy_a time_n of_o access_n and_o with_o such_o circumstance_n as_o may_v give_v his_o temptation_n the_o great_a force_n and_o advantage_n of_o this_o the_o scripture_n assure_v we_o in_o general_a when_o it_o tell_v we_o of_o these_o wile_n and_o device_n of_o satan_n and_o of_o the_o method_n of_o his_o temptation_n so_o that_o though_o we_o do_v not_o particular_o discern_v how_o and_o when_o he_o do_v this_o yet_o we_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o doubt_v of_o the_o thing_n if_o we_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o spirit_n in_o the_o world_n as_o the_o scripture_n particular_o tell_v we_o there_o be_v that_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n and_o that_o god_n from_o who_o nothing_o be_v hide_v and_o who_o see_v all_o the_o secret_a engine_n which_o be_v at_o work_n in_o the_o world_n to_o do_v we_o good_a or_o harm_n have_v in_o mercy_n to_o mankind_n give_v we_o particular_a warning_n of_o it_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a of_o our_o enemy_n and_o their_o malicious_a design_n upon_o we_o and_o that_o we_o may_v be_v continual_o upon_o our_o guard_n aware_a of_o our_o danger_n and_o arm_v against_o it_o second_o the_o devil_n do_v not_o only_o present_a to_o man_n the_o temptation_n and_o occasion_n of_o sin_n but_o when_o he_o be_v permit_v to_o make_v near_a approach_n to_o they_o do_v excite_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o to_o comply_v with_o these_o temptation_n and_o to_o yield_v to_o they_o and_o this_o he_o do_v not_o only_o by_o employ_v his_o instrument_n to_o solicit_v for_o he_o and_o to_o draw_v man_n to_o sin_n by_o bad_a counsel_n and_o example_n which_o we_o see_v frequent_o do_v and_o probable_o very_o often_o by_o the_o devil_n instigation_n those_o who_o be_v very_o wicked_a themselves_o and_o consequent_o more_o enslave_v to_o the_o devil_n and_o under_o his_o power_n be_v as_o it_o be_v factor_n for_o he_o to_o seduce_v other_o but_o beside_o this_o it_o be_v not_o improbable_a but_o the_o devil_n himself_o do_v many_o time_n immediate_o excite_v man_n to_o sin_n by_o work_v upon_o the_o humour_n of_o their_o body_n or_o upon_o their_o imagination_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n infuse_v and_o suggest_v evil_a motion_n into_o they_o or_o by_o divert_v they_o from_o those_o thought_n and_o consideration_n which_o may_v check_v and_o restrain_v they_o from_o that_o wickedness_n to_o which_o he_o be_v tempt_v they_o or_o by_o some_o other_o way_n and_o mean_n
more_o secret_a and_o unknown_a to_o we_o for_o the_o power_n of_o spirit_n whether_o good_a or_o bad_a and_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o operation_n upon_o our_o mind_n be_v thing_n very_o secret_a and_o of_o which_o we_o can_v give_v little_a or_o no_o account_n but_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o we_o have_v many_o time_n reason_v sufficient_a to_o believe_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v so_o when_o we_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a of_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o and_o there_o be_v reason_n from_o what_o be_v say_v in_o scripture_n to_o believe_v that_o the_o devil_n in_o some_o case_n have_v a_o more_o immediate_a power_n and_o influence_n upon_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n to_o excite_v they_o to_o sin_n and_o where_o he_o discover_v a_o very_a bad_a inclination_n or_o resolution_n to_o help_v it_o forward_o and_o to_o keep_v man_n to_o it_o as_o when_o it_o be_v say_v john_n 13._o 27._o that_o the_o devil_n enter_v into_o judas_n to_o push_v he_o on_o in_o that_o ill_a design_n which_o he_o have_v already_o engage_v in_o of_o betray_v our_o saviour_n and_o act_v 5._o 3._o satan_n be_v say_v to_o have_v fill_v the_o heart_n of_o ananias_n to_o lie_v to_o the_o holy-ghost_n and_o to_o keep_v back_o part_n of_o the_o price_n for_o which_o he_o have_v sell_v his_o estate_n which_o expression_n do_v seem_v to_o intimate_v to_o we_o some_o more_o immediate_a power_n and_o influence_n which_o the_o devil_n have_v upon_o those_o person_n but_o then_o it_o be_v very_o observable_a that_o this_o power_n be_v never_o ascribe_v to_o the_o devil_n but_o in_o the_o case_n of_o great_a and_o horrid_a sin_n and_o whâ—re_v man_n be_v beforehand_o notorious_o deprave_v and_o either_o by_o the_o actual_a commission_n of_o some_o former_a great_a sin_n or_o by_o entertain_v some_o very_a wicked_a design_n have_v provoke_v god_n to_o permit_v the_o devil_n a_o near_a access_n to_o they_o for_o judas_n have_v first_o take_v council_n how_o to_o betray_v christ_n before_o it_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n enter_v into_o he_o to_o push_v he_o on_o to_o the_o execution_n of_o it_o and_o ananias_n his_o covetousness_n have_v first_o tempt_v he_o to_o keep_v back_o part_n of_o his_o estate_n act_n and_o inspire_v the_o child_n of_o unbelief_n that_o be_v those_o who_o continue_v in_o their_o infidelity_n and_o will_v not_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n when_o man_n be_v notorious_o wicked_a and_o disobedient_a to_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n the_o devil_n be_v say_v to_o act_n and_o inspire_v they_o which_o certain_o signify_v some_o more_o immediate_a power_n and_o influence_n which_o he_o have_v over_o such_o person_n for_o as_o it_o be_v very_o probable_a that_o the_o devil_n be_v sometime_o permit_v to_o come_v near_o good_a man_n so_o as_o to_o tempt_v they_o so_o by_o notorious_a wickedness_n and_o impiety_n man_n do_v give_v admission_n to_o he_o and_o he_o be_v permit_v by_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n to_o exercise_v great_a dominion_n over_o they_o by_o resist_v his_o temptation_n we_o drive_v he_o from_o we_o so_o st._n james_n tell_v we_o chap._n 4._o ver_fw-la 7._o resist_v the_o devil_n and_o he_o will_v flee_v from_o you_o but_o as_o we_o yield_v to_o his_o temptation_n he_o continual_o make_v near_a approach_n to_o we_o and_o gain_v a_o great_a power_n over_o we_o three_o but_o for_o all_o this_o the_o devil_n can_v force_v no_o man_n to_o sin_n his_o temptation_n may_v move_v and_o excite_v man_n to_o sin_n but_o that_o they_o be_v prevalent_a and_o effectual_a proceed_v from_o our_o own_o will_n and_o consent_n it_o be_v our_o own_o lust_n close_v with_o his_o temptation_n that_o produce_v sin_n the_o devil_n have_v more_o or_o less_o power_n over_o man_n according_a as_o they_o give_v way_n to_o he_o but_o never_o so_o much_o as_o to_o force_v their_o will_n and_o to_o compel_v they_o to_o consent_v to_o and_o comply_v with_o his_o temptation_n the_o grace_n of_o god_n do_v hardly_o offer_v this_o violence_n to_o man_n for_o their_o good_a in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o much_o less_o will_v he_o permit_v the_o devil_n to_o have_v this_o power_n over_o man_n to_o their_o ruin_n and_o destruction_n god_n command_v we_o to_o resist_v the_o devil_n suppose_v that_o his_o temptation_n be_v not_o irresistible_a four_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o appear_v that_o though_o the_o devil_n be_v frequent_o accessary_a to_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n yet_o we_o ourselves_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o he_o tempt_v we_o many_o time_n to_o sin_n but_o it_o be_v we_o that_o commit_v it_o his_o temptation_n may_v sometime_o be_v so_o violent_a as_o to_o extenuate_v our_o fault_n but_o never_o so_o forcible_a as_o whole_o to_o excuse_v we_o for_o we_o be_v so_o far_o guilty_a of_o sin_n as_o we_o give_v our_o consent_n to_o it_o and_o how_o powerful_a soever_o the_o temptation_n be_v to_o any_o kind_n of_o evil_n there_o be_v always_o enough_o of_o our_o own_o will_n in_o it_o to_o render_v we_o guilty_a i_o be_o far_o from_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n tempt_v man_n to_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o they_o do_v i_o rather_o think_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o wickedness_n that_o be_v commit_v in_o the_o world_n spring_v from_o the_o evil_a motion_n of_o man_n own_o mind_n man_n own_o lust_n be_v general_o to_o they_o the_o worst_a devil_n of_o the_o two_o and_o do_v more_o strong_o incline_v they_o to_o sin_n than_o any_o devil_n without_o they_o can_v tempt_v they_o to_o it_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v that_o the_o devil_n do_v all_o the_o mischief_n he_o can_v to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n so_o far_o as_o god_n permit_v he_o and_o though_o the_o number_n of_o evil_a angel_n be_v probable_o very_o great_a yet_o it_o be_v but_o finite_a and_o every_o one_o of_o they_o have_v a_o limit_a power_n and_o though_o they_o be_v very_o active_a yet_o they_o can_v be_v but_o one_o where_o at_o once_o so_o that_o his_o malice_n at_o the_o utmost_a do_v only_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o it_o can_v not_o all_o that_o it_o will_v he_o ply_v where_o he_o have_v the_o best_a custom_n where_o he_o have_v the_o fair_a opportunity_n and_o the_o great_a hope_n he_o leave_v man_n many_o time_n for_o a_o season_n as_o it_o be_v say_v he_o do_v our_o saviour_n because_o he_o despair_n of_o success_n at_o that_o time_n and_o it_o may_v be_v sometime_o when_o he_o be_v go_v these_o person_n grow_v secure_a and_o through_o their_o own_o security_n and_o folly_n fall_v into_o those_o sin_n which_o the_o devil_n with_o all_o his_o bait_n and_o wile_n whilst_o they_o be_v upon_o their_o guard_n can_v not_o tempt_v they_o to_o commit_v other_o after_o he_o have_v make_v they_o sure_o and_o put_v they_o into_o the_o way_n of_o it_o will_v go_v on_o of_o themselves_o and_o be_v as_o mad_a of_o sin_v and_o as_o forward_o to_o destroy_v themselves_o as_o the_o devil_n himself_o can_v wish_v so_o that_o he_o can_v hardly_o tempt_v man_n to_o any_o wickedness_n which_o he_o do_v not_o find_v they_o incline_v to_o of_o themselves_o these_o he_o can_v trust_v with_o themselves_o and_o leave_v they_o to_o their_o own_o inclination_n and_o conduct_n find_v by_o experience_n that_o they_o will_v do_v as_o ill_a thing_n of_o their_o own_o motion_n as_o if_o satan_n stand_v continual_o at_o their_o right_a hand_n to_o prompt_v they_o and_o put_v they_o on_o so_o that_o he_o can_v go_v into_o a_o far_a country_n and_o employ_v himself_o elsewhere_o and_o leave_v they_o for_o a_o long_a time_n be_v confident_a that_o in_o his_o absence_n they_o will_v not_o bury_v their_o talon_n and_o hide_v it_o in_o a_o napkin_n but_o will_v improve_v it_o to_o a_o great_a advantage_n and_o i_o wish_v
that_o our_o own_o age_n do_v not_o afford_v we_o too_o many_o instance_n of_o this_o kind_n of_o such_o forward_a and_o expert_a sinner_n as_o need_v no_o tempter_n either_o to_o instruct_v or_o excite_v they_o to_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a now_o in_o this_o case_n the_o devil_n betake_v himself_o to_o other_o person_n and_o remove_v his_o snare_n and_o bait_n where_o he_o think_v there_o be_v more_o need_n and_o occasion_n for_o they_o so_o that_o we_o may_v reasonable_o conclude_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o wickedness_n commit_v in_o the_o world_n which_o the_o devil_n have_v no_o immediate_a hand_n in_o though_o he_o always_o rejoice_v in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v do_v and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o reason_n to_o attribute_v all_o good_a to_o the_o motion_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n than_o to_o ascribe_v all_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n in_o the_o world_n to_o the_o devil_n because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v more_o powerful_a and_o be_v always_o every_o where_o and_o be_v more_o intent_n upon_o his_o design_n and_o as_o forward_o to_o promote_v it_o as_o the_o devil_n can_v be_v to_o carry_v on_o his_o work_n nay_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o he_o be_v more_o active_a to_o excite_v man_n to_o good_a than_o the_o devil_n can_v be_v to_o tempt_v they_o to_o evil._n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o i_o think_v there_o be_v no_o great_a reason_n to_o doubt_v but_o that_o good_a man_n do_v many_o good_a action_n of_o their_o own_o inclination_n without_o any_o special_a and_o immediate_a motion_n from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o be_v indeed_o at_o first_o regenerate_v and_o sanctify_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o be_v continual_o afterward_o under_o the_o conduct_n of_o the_o same_o spirit_n but_o where_o there_o be_v a_o new_a nature_n it_o be_v of_o itself_o inclinable_a to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o will_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n and_o do_v action_n answerable_a much_o less_o do_v i_o think_v that_o the_o devil_n tempt_v every_o man_n to_o all_o the_o evil_a that_o he_o do_v or_o the_o great_a part_n when_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n and_o the_o habit_n of_o vice_n be_v grow_v strong_a and_o confirm_v the_o devil_n may_v spare_v his_o temptation_n in_o a_o great_a measure_n for_o after_o wicked_a man_n be_v wind_v up_o to_o such_o a_o pitch_n of_o impiety_n they_o will_v go_v a_o great_a while_n of_o themselves_o i_o have_v do_v with_o the_o first_o observation_n that_o as_o the_o apostle_n acquit_v god_n from_o have_v any_o hand_n in_o tempt_a man_n danger_n of_o treachery_n from_o within_o than_o of_o assault_n from_o without_o all_o the_o power_n of_o our_o enemy_n can_v not_o destroy_v we_o if_o we_o be_v but_o true_a to_o ourselves_o so_o that_o the_o apostle_n have_v great_a reason_n to_o ascribe_v the_o efficacy_n of_o temptation_n to_o the_o irregular_a desire_n and_o vicious_a inclination_n of_o man_n rather_o than_o to_o those_o temptation_n which_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n permit_v they_o to_o be_v assault_v with_o and_o consequent_o to_o lay_v the_o blame_n of_o man_n sin_n chief_o upon_o themselves_o and_o that_o chief_o upon_o these_o two_o account_n first_o because_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n voluntary_a second_o god_n have_v put_v it_o in_o our_o power_n to_o resist_v these_o temptation_n and_o overcome_v they_o now_o so_o far_o as_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n be_v voluntary_a it_o be_v their_o own_o fault_n that_o they_o be_v seduce_v by_o they_o and_o if_o god_n have_v put_v it_o in_o our_o power_n to_o resist_v and_o overcome_v temptation_n we_o may_v blame_v ourselves_o if_o we_o be_v overcome_v and_o foil_v by_o they_o first_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n be_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n voluntary_a by_o the_o lust_n of_o man_n i_o mean_v their_o irregular_a desire_n and_o vicious_a inclination_n i_o grant_v that_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v very_o much_o corrupt_v and_o degenerate_v from_o its_o primitive_a integrity_n and_o perfectionâ—_n but_o we_o who_o be_v christian_n have_v receive_v that_o grace_n in_o baptism_n whereby_o our_o nature_n be_v so_o far_o heal_v as_o if_o we_o be_v not_o want_v to_o ourselves_o and_o do_v not_o neglect_v the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v to_o we_o we_o may_v mortify_v our_o lust_n and_o live_v a_o power_n to_o they_o we_o forfeit_v the_o grace_n which_o we_o receive_v in_o baptism_n and_o bring_v ourselves_o again_o under_o the_o power_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n and_o no_o wonder_n then_o if_o our_o lust_n seduce_v we_o and_o make_v we_o ready_a to_o comply_v with_o the_o temptation_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o devil_n nay_o and_o after_o this_o it_o be_v still_o our_o own_o fault_n if_o we_o do_v not_o mortify_v our_o lust_n for_o if_o we_o will_v hearken_v to_o the_o counsel_n of_o god_n and_o obey_v his_o call_n to_o repentance_n and_o sincere_o beg_v his_o grace_n and_o holy_a spirit_n to_o this_o purpose_n we_o may_v yet_o recover_v ourselves_o and_o by_o the_o spirit_n mortify_v the_o lâ—sts_n of_o the_o flesh_n for_o though_o we_o have_v leave_v god_n he_o have_v not_o quite_o forsake_v we_o but_o be_v ready_a to_o afford_v his_o grace_n again_o to_o we_o though_o we_o have_v neglect_v and_o abuse_v it_o and_o to_o give_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o those_o that_o ask_v he_o though_o they_o have_v forfeit_v it_o so_o that_o though_o our_o lust_n spring_n from_o something_o which_o be_v natural_a yet_o that_o they_o live_v and_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o be_v voluntary_a because_o we_o â—ight_a remedy_n it_o if_o we_o will_v and_o make_v use_n of_o those_o mean_n which_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n offer_v to_o we_o second_o god_n have_v put_v it_o in_o our_o power_n to_o resist_v these_o temptation_n and_o overcome_v they_o so_o that_o it_o be_v our_o own_o fault_n if_o we_o yield_v to_o they_o and_o be_v overcome_v by_o they_o it_o
