absolute_a perfection_n in_o this_o life_n of_o any_o such_o condition_n as_o shall_v not_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o continual_a cleanse_n and_o pardon_n wherefore_o there_o be_v or_o may_v be_v such_o sin_n in_o believer_n yea_o many_o of_o they_o which_o yet_o under_o a_o due_a application_n unto_o god_n for_o purify_n and_o pardon_v grace_n shall_v neither_o deprive_v we_o of_o peace_n here_o nor_o endanger_v our_o salvation_n hereafter_o but_o he_o speak_v immediate_o of_o another_o sort_n of_o sin_n which_o partly_o from_o their_o nature_n or_o what_o they_o be_v in_o themselves_o and_o partly_o from_o their_o operation_n and_o power_n will_v certain_o prove_v destructive_a unto_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n wherever_o they_o be_v v._o 13._o keep_v back_o thy_o servant_n also_o sin_n which_o be_v in_o you_o shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o that_o be_v none_o of_o they_o who_o be_v not_o sensible_a of_o it_o who_o groan_v not_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o it_o as_o experience_n concur_v herein_o so_o a_o supposition_n of_o it_o be_v the_o only_a ground_n of_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n of_o evangelical_n mortification_n that_o this_o be_v a_o duty_n a_o duty_n incumbent_n on_o believer_n all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life_n such_o a_o duty_n as_o without_o which_o they_o can_v never_o perform_v any_o other_o in_o a_o due_a manner_n will_v not_o be_v deny_v by_o any_o but_o either_o such_o as_o be_v whole_o under_o the_o power_n of_o atheistical_a blindness_n or_o such_o as_o by_o the_o fever_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n have_v lose_v the_o understanding_n it_o so_o abide_v in_o believer_n in_o various_a degree_n may_v put_v forth_o its_o power_n in_o they_o to_o obtain_v victory_n and_o dominion_n over_o they_o it_o be_v first_o suppose_v that_o it_o have_v this_o dominion_n in_o some_o that_o it_o do_v bear_v rule_n over_o all_o unbeliever_n all_o that_o be_v under_o the_o law_n and_o than_o that_o it_o will_v strive_v to_o do_v the_o same_o in_o they_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v under_o grace_n for_o affirm_v that_o it_o shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o he_o grant_v that_o it_o may_v or_o do_v contend_v for_o it_o only_o it_o shall_v not_o have_v success_n it_o shall_v not_o prevail_v hence_o it_o be_v say_v to_o fight_v and_o war_n in_o we_o rom._n seven_o 23._o and_o to_o fight_v against_o our_o soul_n 1_o pet._n ij_o 12._o now_o it_o thus_o fight_v and_o war_n and_o contend_v in_o we_o for_o dominion_n for_o that_o be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o war_n whatever_o fight_v it_o do_v it_o for_o power_n and_o rule_n this_o therefore_o be_v the_o general_a design_n of_o sin_n in_o all_o its_o act_n these_o act_n be_v various_a according_a to_o the_o variety_n of_o lust_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n but_o its_o general_a design_n in_o they_o all_o be_v dominion_n where_o any_o one_o be_v tempt_v and_o seduce_v of_o his_o own_o lust_n as_o the_o apostle_n james_n speak_v be_v it_o in_o a_o matter_n never_o so_o small_a or_o so_o unusual_a or_o the_o temptation_n thereunto_o may_v never_o occur_v again_o the_o design_n of_o sin_n lie_v not_o in_o the_o particular_a temptation_n but_o to_o make_v it_o a_o mean_n to_o obtain_v dominion_n over_o the_o soul._n and_o the_o consideration_n hereof_o shall_v keep_v believer_n always_o on_o their_o guard_n against_o all_o the_o motion_n of_o sin_n though_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o seem_v but_o small_a and_o the_o occasion_n of_o they_o such_o as_o be_v not_o like_a to_o return_v for_o the_o aim_n and_o tendancy_n of_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v dominion_n and_o death_n which_o they_o will_v compass_v if_o not_o stop_v in_o their_o progress_n as_o the_o apostle_n there_o decalre_n james_n i_o 14_o 15._o believe_v not_o its_o flattery_n be_v aim_v at_o in_o all_o 3._o there_o be_v two_o way_n in_o general_a whereby_o sin_n act_v its_o power_n and_o aim_v at_o the_o obtain_v this_o dominion_n and_o they_o be_v the_o two_o only_a way_n whereby_o any_o may_v design_n or_o attain_v a_o unjust_a dominion_n and_o they_o be_v deceit_n and_o force_n both_o of_o which_o i_o have_v full_o describe_v in_o another_o discourse_n with_o respect_n whereunto_o it_o be_v promise_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n shall_v deliver_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o poor_a that_o cry_n unto_o he_o from_o deceit_n and_o violence_n psal._n lxxii_o 14._o these_o be_v the_o two_o only_a way_n of_o obtain_v a_o unjust_a
dominion_n and_o where_o they_o be_v in_o conjunction_n they_o must_v have_v a_o mighty_a prevalency_n and_o such_o as_o will_v render_v the_o contest_v hazardous_a there_o be_v few_o believer_n but_o have_v find_v it_o so_o at_o least_o in_o their_o own_o apprehension_n they_o have_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v at_o one_o time_n or_o another_o we_o shall_v one_o day_n fall_v by_o the_o hand_n of_o we_o against_o though_o it_o will_v abide_v in_o we_o though_o it_o will_v contend_v for_o rule_n by_o deceit_n and_o force_n yet_o it_o shall_v not_o prevail_v it_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o dominion_n and_o this_o be_v a_o case_n of_o the_o high_a importance_n unto_o we_o our_o soul_n be_v and_o must_v be_v under_o the_o rule_n of_o some_o principle_n or_o law._n and_o from_o this_o rule_n our_o state_n be_v determine_v and_o denominate_v we_o be_v either_o servant_n of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o this_o be_v the_o acceptation_n with_o god._n chap._n ii_o the_o inquiry_n for_o understand_v the_o text_n propose_v the_o first_o speak_v to_o viz._n what_o be_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n which_o we_o be_v free_v from_o and_o discharge_v of_o by_o grace_n we_o shall_v inquire_v into_o three_o thing_n from_o the_o word_n of_o this_o text._n i._o what_o be_v that_o dominion_n of_o sin_n which_o we_o be_v free_v from_o and_o discharge_v of_o by_o grace_n ii_o how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n in_o we_o or_o no._n iii_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n and_o evidence_n of_o the_o assurance_n here_o give_v we_o that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o namely_o because_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n 1._o as_o unto_o the_o first_o of_o these_o i_o shall_v only_o recount_v some_o such_o property_n of_o it_o as_o will_v discover_v its_o nature_n in_o general_a the_o particular_n wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v will_v be_v consider_v afterward_o 1._o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v perverse_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o on_o both_o the_o account_n which_o render_v any_o rule_n or_o dominion_n so_o to_o be_v for_o 1._o it_o be_v usurp_v sin_n have_v no_o right_a to_o rule_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o men._n man_n have_v no_o power_n to_o give_v sin_n a_o right_a to_o rule_v over_o they_o they_o may_v voluntary_o enslave_v themselves_o unto_o it_o but_o this_o give_v sin_n no_o right_a or_o title_n all_o man_n have_v original_o another_o lord_n unto_o who_o they_o owe_v all_o obedience_n nor_o can_v any_o thing_n discharge_v they_o from_o their_o allegiance_n thereunto_o and_o this_o be_v the_o law_n of_o god._n the_o apostle_n say_v indeed_o that_o unto_o who_o man_n yield_v themselves_o servant_n to_o obey_v his_o servant_n they_o be_v to_o who_o they_o obey_v whether_o of_o sin_n unto_o death_n or_o of_o obedience_n unto_o righteousness_n v_o 19_o and_o so_o it_o be_v man_n be_v thereby_o the_o proper_a servant_n of_o sin_n they_o become_v so_o by_o their_o own_o voluntary_a subjection_n unto_o it_o but_o this_o give_v sin_n no_o title_n against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n who_o right_a alone_a it_o be_v to_o bear_v sway_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n for_o all_o that_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o sin_n do_v live_v in_o actual_a rebellion_n against_o their_o natural_a liege_n lord._n hence_o sundry_a thing_n do_v follow_v first_o the_o great_a aggravation_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o a_o state_n of_o sin._n man_n who_o live_v therein_o do_v voluntary_o wrest_v themselves_o what_o lie_v in_o they_o from_o under_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o give_v up_o themselves_o to_o be_v slave_n unto_o this_o tyrant_n can_v it_o lay_v any_o claim_n to_o this_o dominion_n have_v it_o any_o title_n to_o plead_v it_o be_v some_o alleviation_n of_o gild_n in_o they_o that_o give_v up_o themselves_o unto_o it_o but_o man_n yield_v up_o themselves_o to_o the_o slavery_n of_o sin_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v they_o reject_v the_o rule_n of_o god_n law_n and_o choose_v this_o foreign_a yoke_n which_o can_v but_o be_v a_o aggravation_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o misery_n yet_o so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n do_v visible_o and_o open_o profess_v themselves_o the_o servant_n and_o slave_n of_o sin._n they_o wear_v its_o livery_n and_o do_v all_o its_o drudgery_n yea_o they_o boast_v themselves_o in_o their_o bondage_n and_o never_o think_v themselves_o so_o brave_a and_o gallant_a as_o when_o by_o profane_a swear_v drunkenness_n uncleanness_n covetousness_n and_o scoff_v at_o religion_n they_o open_o disavow_v the_o lord_n who_o they_o serve_v the_o master_n to_o who_o they_o do_v belong_v but_o their_o damnation_n sleep_v not_o whatever_o they_o may_v dream_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n 2._o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o ordinary_o all_o man_n have_v a_o right_n in_o themselves_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o rule_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o vindicate_v themselves_o into_o liberty_n they_o may_v when_o they_o will_v plead_v the_o right_n and_o title_n of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n unto_o the_o rule_n of_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o utter_a exclusion_n of_o all_o plea_n and_o pretence_n of_o sin_n for_o its_o power_n they_o have_v right_o to_o say_v unto_o it_o get_v thou_o hence_o what_o have_v i_o to_o do_v any_o more_o with_o idol_n all_o man_n i_o say_v have_v this_o right_n in_o themselves_o because_o of_o the_o natural_a allegiance_n they_o owe_v to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o they_o have_v not_o power_n of_o themselves_o to_o execute_v this_o right_n and_o actual_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n of_o sin_n but_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n sin_n be_v dominion_n be_v break_v only_o by_o grace_n but_o you_o will_v say_v then_o unto_o what_o end_n serve_v this_o right_a if_o they_o have_v not_o power_n in_o themselves_o to_o put_v it_o in_o execution_n and_o how_o can_v it_o be_v charge_v as_o a_o aggravation_n of_o their_o sin_n that_o they_o do_v not_o use_v the_o right_n which_o they_o have_v see_v they_o have_v no_o power_n so_o to_o do_v will_v you_o blame_v a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o right_a to_o a_o estate_n if_o he_o do_v not_o recover_v it_o when_o he_o have_v no_o mean_n so_o to_o do_v i_o answer_v brief_o three_o thing_n one_a no_o man_n live_v neglect_v the_o use_n of_o this_o right_n to_o cast_v off_o the_o yoke_n and_o dominion_n of_o sin_n because_o he_o can_v of_o himself_o make_v use_v of_o it_o but_o mere_o because_o he_o will_v not_o he_o do_v voluntary_o choose_v to_o continue_v under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o look_n on_o every_o thing_n as_o his_o enemy_n that_o will_v deliver_v he_o the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v enmity_n against_o god_n it_o be_v not_o subject_a unto_o his_o law_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v rom._n viij_o 7._o when_o the_o law_n come_v at_o any_o time_n to_o claim_v its_o right_n and_o rule_v over_o the_o soul_n a_o man_n under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n look_v on_o it_o as_o his_o enemy_n that_o come_v to_o disturb_v his_o peace_n and_o fortify_v his_o mind_n against_o it_o and_o when_o the_o gospel_n come_v and_o tender_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n for_o the_o soul_n delivery_n offer_v its_o aid_n and_o assistance_n unto_o that_o end_n this_o also_o be_v look_v on_o as_o a_o enemy_n and_o be_v reject_v and_o all_o
by_o his_o actual_a adultery_n but_o of_o his_o heart_n by_o impure_a imagination_n so_o it_o may_v be_v in_o case_n of_o other_o temptation_n whilst_o man_n be_v entangle_v with_o any_o temptation_n of_o what_o sort_n soever_o it_o be_v it_o will_v multiply_v thought_n about_o it_o in_o the_o mind_n yea_o its_o whole_a power_n consist_v in_o a_o multiplication_n of_o evil_a imagination_n by_o they_o it_o blind_v the_o mind_n draw_v it_o off_o from_o the_o consideration_n of_o its_o duty_n and_o entice_v it_o unto_o a_o full_a conception_n of_o sin_n jam._n i._n 14._o wherefore_o in_o this_o case_n of_o a_o prevalent_a temptation_n which_o may_v befall_v a_o true_a believer_n the_o corrupt_a work_n of_o the_o imagination_n do_v not_o prove_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v inquire_v how_o the_o mind_n may_v be_v free_v and_o clear_v of_o these_o perplex_v defile_v imagination_n which_o arise_v from_o the_o urgency_n of_o some_o present_a temptation_n suppose_v opposition_n unto_o the_o thing_n above_o that_o be_v that_o we_o will_v not_o fill_v our_o imagination_n and_o thereby_o our_o affection_n with_o they_o but_o what_o be_v the_o way_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v enable_v so_o to_o do_v that_o be_v say_v he_o the_o universal_a mortification_n of_o sin_n v_o 5._o for_o want_n of_o the_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n hereof_o or_o for_o want_v of_o its_o practice_n through_o a_o secret_a unwillingness_n to_o come_v up_o unto_o a_o full_a mortification_n of_o sin_n some_o be_v gall_v and_o perplex_v yea_o and_o defile_v with_o foolish_a and_o vain_a imagination_n all_o their_o day_n and_o although_o they_o prove_v not_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n yet_o they_o will_v deprive_v the_o soul_n of_o that_o peace_n and_o comfort_n which_o otherwise_o sin_n consist_v in_o put_v a_o force_n on_o the_o mind_n and_o soul_n by_o its_o temptation_n there_o it_o have_v no_o dominion_n it_o may_v perplex_v they_o it_o do_v not_o rule_v over_o they_o hand_n will_v make_v a_o great_a pretence_n and_o appearance_n of_o a_o opposition_n in_o the_o will_n unto_o sin_n by_o their_o unavoidable_a impression_n on_o it_o when_o it_o be_v not_o so_o and_o disturb_a affection_n under_o temptation_n will_v plead_v that_o the_o will_n itself_o be_v give_v up_o unto_o the_o choice_n and_o service_n of_o sin_n when_o it_o be_v not_o so_o the_o will_n in_o this_o matter_n be_v like_o the_o theban_n shield_n whilst_o that_o be_v safe_a they_o conceit_v themselves_o victorious_a even_o in_o death_n however_o this_o case_n be_v determinable_a by_o the_o light_n of_o scripture_n and_o experience_n and_o it_o be_v here_o propose_v unto_o a_o determination_n 3_o it_o be_v require_v unto_o this_o dominion_n of_o sin_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o back-drivings_a by_o cross_a wind_n and_o storm_n so_o be_v it_o with_o a_o soul_n under_o the_o conduct_n of_o grace_n its_o fix_a design_n be_v to_o live_v unto_o god_n but_o in_o its_o course_n it_o meet_v with_o storm_n and_o cross_a wind_n of_o temptation_n and_o various_a artifices_fw-la of_o sin._n these_o disturb_v he_o disorder_n he_o drive_v he_o backward_o sometime_o as_o if_o it_o will_v take_v a_o contrary_a course_n and_o return_v unto_o the_o coast_n of_o sin_n from_o whence_o it_o set_v out_o but_o where_o grace_n have_v the_o rule_n and_o conduct_v it_o will_v weather_v all_o these_o opposition_n and_o obstruction_n it_o will_v restore_v the_o soul_n bring_v it_o again_o into_o order_n recover_v it_o from_o the_o confusion_n and_o evil_a frames_n that_o it_o be_v draw_v into_o it_o will_v give_v a_o fresh_a predominancy_n unto_o its_o prevalent_a design_n of_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v do_v this_o constant_o as_o often_o as_o the_o soul_n meet_v with_o such_o ruffle_n from_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n when_o there_o be_v a_o radical_a firmitude_n and_o strength_n in_o a_o cause_n or_o design_n it_o will_v work_v itself_o out_o through_o all_o change_n and_o variation_n but_o when_o the_o strength_n of_o any_o cause_n be_v but_o occasion_n the_o first_o opposition_n and_o disorder_n will_v ruin_v we_o so_o if_o man_n purpose_n of_o live_v unto_o god_n be_v only_o occasional_a from_o present_a conviction_n the_o first_o vigorous_a opposition_n or_o temptation_n will_v disorder_v it_o and_o overthrow_v it_o but_o where_o this_o be_v the_o radical_a design_n of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n it_o will_v break_v through_o all_o such_o opposition_n and_o recover_v its_o prevalency_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o affection_n hereby_o do_v it_o evidence_n its_o rule_n and_o that_o the_o whole_a interest_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o rebellion_n and_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o dominion_n 2._o it_o do_v so_o by_o keep_v up_o a_o constant_a exercise_n of_o grace_n in_o all_o religious_a duty_n or_o at_o least_o a_o sincere_a endeavour_n that_o so_o it_o may_v be_v where_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n it_o can_v allow_v the_o soul_n to_o perform_v religious_a duty_n yea_o in_o some_o case_n to_o abound_v in_o they_o but_o it_o will_v take_v care_n that_o divine_a grace_n be_v not_o exercise_v in_o they_o whatever_o there_o may_v be_v of_o delight_n in_o duty_n or_o other_o motion_n of_o affection_n which_o light_n and_o gift_n and_o affliction_n and_o superstition_n will_v occasion_v there_o be_v no_o exercise_n of_o divine_a faith_n and_o love_n in_o they_o this_o belong_v essential_o and_o inseparable_o unto_o the_o rule_n of_o grace_n wherever_o that_o bear_v sway_v the_o soul_n will_v endeavour_v the_o constant_a exercise_n of_o grace_n in_o all_o its_o duty_n and_o never_o be_v satisfy_v in_o the_o work_n do_v without_o some_o sense_n of_o it_o where_o it_o fail_v therein_o it_o will_v judge_v itself_o and_o watch_v against_o the_o like_a surprisal_n yea_o unless_o it_o be_v in_o case_n of_o some_o great_a temptation_n the_o present_a sense_n of_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v the_o high_a obstruction_n against_o that_o
spiritual_a boldness_n which_o be_v require_v unto_o the_o due_a exercise_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v of_o faith_n and_o love_n in_o holy_a duty_n shall_v not_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o endeavour_v after_o it_o or_o the_o use_n of_o it_o if_o by_o these_o mean_n and_o the_o like_a inseparable_a operation_n of_o grace_n we_o can_v have_v a_o assure_v experience_n that_o we_o be_v under_o the_o rule_n and_o conduct_v of_o it_o we_o may_v be_v free_a in_o our_o mind_n from_o disturb_v apprehension_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n for_o both_o can_v bear_v sway_n in_o the_o same_o soul._n 4thly_a it_o be_v require_v hereunto_o that_o sin_n make_v the_o soul_n sensible_a of_o its_o power_n and_o rule_n at_o least_o do_v that_o which_o may_v do_v so_o unless_o conscience_n be_v utter_o sear_v and_o harden_v and_o so_o past_a feeling_n there_o be_v no_o rule_n nor_o dominion_n but_o they_o be_v or_o may_v be_v sensible_a of_o it_o who_o be_v subject_a thereunto_o and_o there_o be_v two_o way_n whereby_o sin_n in_o its_o dominion_n will_v make_v they_o sensible_a of_o it_o in_o who_o it_o rule_v 1._o in_o repress_v and_o overcome_v the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o mind_n those_o who_o be_v under_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o immediate_o may_v have_v light_n into_o and_o conviction_n of_o their_o duty_n in_o many_o thing_n and_o this_o light_n and_o conviction_n they_o may_v follow_v ordinary_o notwithstanding_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n as_o a_o tyrant_n will_v permit_v his_o slave_n and_o subject_n ordinary_o to_o follow_v their_o own_o occasion_n but_o if_o what_o they_o will_v do_v come_v either_o in_o matter_n or_o manner_n to_o enterfere_v with_o or_o oppose_v his_o interest_n he_o will_v make_v they_o sensible_a of_o his_o power_n so_o sin_n where_o it_o have_v the_o dominion_n if_o man_n have_v light_a and_o conviction_n it_o will_v allow_v they_o ordinary_o and_o in_o many_o thing_n to_o comply_v therewithal_o it_o will_v allow_v they_o to_o pray_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n to_o abstain_v from_o sundry_a sin_n to_o perform_v many_o duty_n as_o be_v express_o affirm_v in_o the_o scripture_n of_o many_o that_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o see_v it_o in_o experience_n how_o much_o work_n do_v we_o see_v about_o religion_n and_o religious_a duty_n what_o constant_a observation_n of_o the_o time_n and_o season_n of_o they_o how_o many_o duty_n perform_v moral_o good_a in_o themselves_o and_o useful_a by_o they_o who_o on_o many_o other_o account_n do_v proclaim_v themselves_o to_o be_v under_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n but_o if_o the_o light_n and_o conviction_n of_o this_o sort_n of_o person_n do_v rise_v up_o in_o opposition_n unto_o the_o principal_a interest_n of_o sin_n in_o those_o lust_n and_o way_n wherein_o it_o exercise_v its_o rule_n it_o will_v make_v they_o in_o who_o they_o be_v sensible_a of_o its_o power_n they_o that_o stifle_v or_o shut_v their_o eye_n against_o or_o cast_v out_o of_o mind_n or_o go_v direct_o contrary_a unto_o their_o conviction_n light_n in_o such_o case_n will_v first_o repine_v and_o they_o relieve_v itself_o with_o resolution_n for_o other_o time_n and_o season_n but_o sin_n will_v carry_v the_o cause_n by_o virtue_n of_o its_o dominion_n hence_o two_o thing_n do_v follow_v 1._o a_o constant_a self-judging_a with_o respect_n thereunto_o as_o the_o apostle_n declare_v rom._n ij_o 15._o and_o herein_o many_o do_v satisfy_v themselves_o when_o their_o light_n condemn_v sin_n they_o suppose_v they_o hate_v it_o but_o they_o do_v not_o when_o conviction_n call_v for_o duty_n they_o suppose_v they_o love_v they_o but_o they_o do_v not_o that_o which_o they_o look_v on_o as_o the_o rule_n of_o light_n in_o they_o in_o opposition_n unto_o sin_n be_v but_o the_o rebellion_n of_o a_o natural_a enlighten_v conscience_n against_o the_o dominion_n of_o it_o in_o the_o heart_n in_o brief_a light_n may_v condemn_v every_o know_a sin_n keep_v from_o many_o press_v for_o every_o know_a duty_n lead_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o yet_o sin_n have_v a_o full_a dominion_n in_o the_o soul._n and_o this_o it_o will_v evidence_n when_o it_o come_v to_o the_o trial_n in_o those_o instance_n where_o it_o exercise_v its_o roll_a power_n 2._o that_o miserable_a be_v their_o condition_n who_o mind_n be_v ground_n continual_o between_o the_o conduct_n of_o their_o light_n with_o the_o urgency_n of_o conviction_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o the_o rule_n or_o dominion_n of_o sin_n on_o the_o other_o wherever_o light_n be_v it_o be_v its_o due_a to_o have_v the_o rule_n and_o conduct_n it_o be_v that_o act_n whereby_o the_o mind_n load_v itself_o for_o man_n to_o be_v force_v by_o the_o power_n of_o their_o lust_n to_o act_v for_o the_o most_o part_n against_o their_o light_n as_o they_o do_v where_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n it_o be_v a_o sad_a and_o deplorable_a condition_n such_o person_n be_v say_v to_o rebel_v against_o the_o light_n job_n xxiv_o 13._o because_o of_o its_o right_a to_o rule_v in_o they_o where_o it_o be_v depose_v by_o sin._n this_o make_v mind_n towards_o those_o sin_n it_o will_v level_v the_o bend_v of_o the_o whole_a soul_n towards_o such_o sin_n or_o the_o circumstance_n of_o they_o nor_o be_v there_o a_o more_o pregnant_a discovery_n of_o the_o rule_n of_o sin_n in_o any_o than_o this_o that_o it_o habitual_o engage_v the_o mind_n and_o affection_n unto_o a_o constant_a exercise_n of_o themselves_o about_o this_o or_o that_o some_o sin_n and_o evil_a way_n or_o other_o but_o yet_o we_o must_v add_v that_o notwithstanding_o these_o indication_n of_o the_o roll_a power_n of_o sin_n they_o be_v but_o few_o in_o who_o it_o have_v this_o dominion_n that_o be_v convince_v of_o their_o state_n and_o condition_n many_o be_v so_o under_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n of_o supine_n sloth_n and_o negligence_n and_o be_v so_o desperate_o wicked_a as_o that_o they_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o this_o rule_n of_o sin._n such_o be_v those_o describe_v by_o the_o apostle_n ephes._n four_o 18_o 19_o and_o whereas_o they_o be_v the_o vile_a slave_n that_o live_v on_o the_o earth_n they_o judge_v none_o to_o be_v free_a but_o themselves_o they_o look_v on_o other_o as_o in_o bondage_n to_o foolish_a and_o superstitious_a fear_n whilst_o they_o be_v at_o liberty_n to_o drink_v swear_v scoff_v at_o religion_n whore_n and_o defile_v themselves_o without_o control_n this_o be_v their_o liberty_n and_o they_o may_v have_v that_o which_o be_v as_o good_a in_o hell_n a_o liberty_n to_o curse_n and_o blaspheme_n god_n and_o to_o fly_v with_o revengeful_a thought_n on_o themselves_o and_o the_o whole_a creation_n the_o light_n in_o such_o person_n be_v darkness_n itself_o so_o as_o that_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o rise_v up_o in_o opposition_n unto_o the_o rule_n of_o sin_n whence_o alone_o a_o sense_n of_o its_o power_n do_v arise_v other_o as_o we_o observe_v before_o live_v in_o some_o compliance_n with_o their_o light_n and_o conviction_n abstain_v from_o many_o sin_n and_o perform_v many_o duty_n though_o they_o live_v in_o some_o know_a sin_n or_o other_o and_o allow_v themselves_o in_o it_o yet_o will_v not_o allow_v that_o sin_n have_v the_o dominion_n in_o they_o wherefore_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n hard_a and_o difficult_a in_o this_o case_n 1._o to_o convince_v those_o in_o who_o sin_n evident_o have_v the_o dominion_n that_o such_o indeed_o be_v their_o state_n and_o condition_n they_o unto_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o when_o they_o have_v opportunity_n and_o advantage_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o most_o cloister_v recluse_n may_v live_v in_o constant_a adultery_n whereby_o multitude_n of_o they_o become_v actual_o the_o sink_n of_o uncleanness_n this_o be_v that_o which_o in_o the_o root_n of_o it_o be_v severe_o condemn_v by_o our_o saviour_n matth._n v._n 28._o 3._o of_o prayer_n and_o be_v constant_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o it_o but_o the_o love_n of_o sin_n and_o live_v in_o it_o have_v devour_v their_o gift_n and_o whole_o take_v off_o their_o mind_n from_o the_o duty_n itself_o which_o be_v the_o proper_a character_n of_o hypocrite_n will_v he_o delight_v himself_o in_o the_o almighty_a will_v he_o always_o call_v upon_o god_n job_n xxvij_o 10._o he_o may_v do_v so_o for_o a_o season_n but_o fall_v under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n he_o will_v not_o continue_v so_o to_o do_v now_o because_o sin_n use_v great_a deceit_n herein_o in_o a_o gradual_a progress_n for_o attain_v its_o end_n and_o thereby_o secure_v its_o dominion_n we_o may_v in_o a_o way_n of_o warning_n or_o caution_n take_v notice_n of_o some_o of_o its_o step_n that_o the_o spiritual_a light_n unto_o the_o mind_n which_o be_v to_o be_v improve_v so_o the_o entrance_n of_o sin_n the_o first_o act_n of_o it_o on_o the_o mind_n towards_o the_o neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n bring_v a_o deceive_a darkness_n with_o they_o which_o be_v to_o be_v oppose_v 1._o it_o will_v produce_v in_o the_o mind_n a_o unreadiness_n unto_o this_o duty_n in_o its_o proper_a season_n the_o heart_n shall_v always_o rejoice_v in_o the_o approach_n of_o such_o season_n because_o of_o the_o delight_n in_o god_n which_o it_o have_v in_o they_o to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v glad_a in_o all_o our_o approach_n unto_o god_n be_v every_o way_n require_v of_o we_o and_o therefore_o with_o the_o thought_n of_o and_o in_o the_o approach_n of_o such_o season_n we_o ought_v to_o groan_v in_o all_o thing_n will_v be_v unready_a and_o out_o of_o order_n strange_a tergiversation_n will_v rise_v in_o the_o mind_n either_o as_o unto_o the_o duty_n itself_o or_o as_o unto_o the_o manner_n of_o its_o performance_n customariness_n and_o formality_n be_v the_o principle_n which_o act_n themselves_o in_o this_o case_n the_o body_n seem_v to_o carry_v the_o mind_n to_o the_o duty_n whether_o it_o will_v or_o no_o rather_o than_o the_o mind_n to_o lead_v the_o body_n in_o its_o part_n of_o it_o and_o it_o will_v employ_v itself_o in_o any_o thing_n rather_o than_o in_o the_o work_n and_o duty_n that_o lie_v before_o it_o herein_o then_o lie_v a_o great_a part_n of_o our_o wisdom_n in_o obviate_a the_o power_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o let_v we_o keep_v our_o heart_n continual_o in_o a_o gracious_a disposition_n and_o readiness_n for_o this_o duty_n in_o all_o its_o proper_a season_n if_o you_o lose_v this_o ground_n you_o will_v yet_o go_v more_o backward_o continual_o know_v therefore_o that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o effectual_a preservative_n of_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n than_o a_o gracious_a readiness_n for_o and_o disposition_n unto_o this_o compliance_n with_o custom_n and_o conviction_n 3._o sin_n will_v at_o length_n prevail_v unto_o a_o total_a neglect_n of_o this_o duty_n this_o be_v a_o observation_n confirm_v by_o long_a experience_n if_o prayer_n do_v not_o constant_o endeavour_v the_o ruin_n of_o sin_n sin_n will_v ruin_v prayer_n and_o utter_o alienate_v the_o soul_n from_o it_o this_o be_v the_o way_n of_o backslider_n in_o heart_n as_o they_o grow_v in_o sin_n they_o decay_n in_o prayer_n until_o they_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o and_o utter_o relinquish_v it_o so_o they_o speak_v mal._n i._n 13._o behold_v what_o a_o weariness_n it_o be_v and_o you_o have_v snuff_v at_o it_o they_o look_v on_o it_o
to_o they_o that_o be_v sincere_a but_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n there_o be_v uncontrollable_a evidence_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n in_o man_n some_o whereof_o i_o shall_v mention_v and_o persecution_n to_o their_o apostasy_n or_o 7._o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o sanctify_a principle_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o christian_a religion_n or_o 8._o be_v despiser_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o conversion_n or_o 9_o live_v in_o security_n under_o open_a providential_a warning_n and_o call_n to_o repentance_n or_o 10._o be_v enemy_n in_o their_o mind_n unto_o the_o true_a interest_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o world._n where_o these_o thing_n and_o the_o like_a be_v find_v there_o be_v no_o question_n what_o it_o be_v that_o have_v dominion_n and_o bear_v rule_n in_o the_o mind_n of_o men._n this_o all_o man_n may_v easy_o know_v as_o the_o apostle_n declare_v rom._n vi_fw-la 16._o chap._n iii_o the_o three_o enquiry_n handle_v viz._n what_o be_v the_o assurance_n give_v we_o and_o what_o be_v the_o ground_n thereof_o that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v dominion_n over_o we_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o assurance_n be_v that_o we_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o grace_n the_o it_o shall_v never_o have_v dominion_n over_o they_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o assurance_n be_v that_o believer_n be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n and_o the_o force_n of_o this_o reason_n we_o may_v manifest_v in_o some_o few_o instance_n 1._o the_o law_n give_v no_o strength_n against_o sin_n unto_o they_o that_o be_v under_o it_o but_o grace_n do_v sin_n will_v neither_o be_v cast_v nor_o keep_v out_o of_o its_o throne_n but_o by_o a_o spiritual_a power_n and_o strength_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o oppose_v conquer_v and_o dethrow_v it_o where_o it_o be_v not_o conquer_v it_o will_v reign_v and_o conquer_v it_o will_v not_o be_v without_o a_o mighty_a prevail_a power_n this_o the_o law_n will_v not_o can_v give_v the_o law_n be_v take_v two_o way_n 1._o for_o the_o whole_a revelation_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o will_n of_o god_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o have_v grace_n in_o it_o and_o so_o do_v give_v both_o life_n and_o 〈◊〉_d and_o strength_n against_o sin_n as_o the_o psalmist_n declare_v psal._n nineteeen_o 7_o 8_o 9_o in_o that_o sense_n it_o contain_v not_o only_o the_o law_n of_o precept_n but_o the_o promise_n also_o and_o the_o covenant_n which_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o convey_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n unto_o the_o church_n in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v not_o here_o speak_v of_o nor_o be_v any_o where_o oppose_v unto_o grace_n 2._o for_o the_o covenant_n rule_n of_o perfect_a obedience_n do_v this_o and_o live_v in_o this_o sense_n man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v under_o it_o in_o opposition_n unto_o be_v under_o grace_n they_o be_v under_o its_o power_n rule_n condition_n and_o authority_n as_o a_o covenant_n and_o in_o this_o sense_n all_o man_n be_v under_o it_o who_o be_v not_o enstate_v in_o the_o new_a covenant_n through_o faith_n in_o christ_n jesus_n who_o set_v up_o in_o they_o and_o over_o they_o the_o rule_n of_o grace_n for_o all_o man_n must_v be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o under_o the_o rule_n of_o god_n and_o he_o rule_v only_o by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o grace_n and_o none_o can_v be_v under_o both_o at_o the_o same_o time_n in_o this_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v never_o ordain_v of_o god_n to_o convey_v grace_n or_o spiritual_a strength_n unto_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n have_v it_o be_v so_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o gospel_n have_v be_v needless_a if_o there_o have_v be_v a_o law_n give_v which_o can_v have_v give_v life_n very_o righteousness_n shall_v have_v be_v by_o the_o law_n gal._n iij._o 21._o if_o it_o can_v have_v give_v life_n or_o strength_n it_o will_v have_v produce_v righteousness_n we_o shall_v have_v be_v justify_v by_o it_o it_o discover_v sin_n and_o condemn_v it_o but_o give_v no_o strength_n to_o oppose_v it_o it_o be_v not_o god_n ordinance_n for_o the_o dethrow_n of_o sin_n nor_o for_o the_o destruction_n of_o its_o dominion_n this_o law_n fall_v under_o a_o double_a consideration_n but_o in_o neither_o of_o they_o be_v design_v to_o to_o cast_v it_o out_o when_o it_o be_v once_o enthrone_v 2_o as_o it_o be_v renew_v and_o enjoin_v unto_o the_o church_n of_o israel_n on_o mount_n sinai_n and_o with_o they_o unto_o all_o that_o will_v join_v themselves_o unto_o the_o lord_n out_o of_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o world._n yet_o neither_o be_v it_o then_o nor_o as_o such_o design_v unto_o any_o such_o end_n as_o to_o destroy_v or_o dethrone_v sin_n by_o a_o administration_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o grace_n it_o have_v some_o new_a end_n give_v then_o unto_o it_o which_o it_o have_v not_o in_o its_o original_a of_o men._n as_o it_o discover_v sin_n as_o it_o irritate_v and_o provoke_v it_o by_o its_o severity_n as_o it_o judge_v and_o condemn_v it_o as_o it_o denounce_v a_o curse_n on_o sinner_n it_o strength_n in_o its_o due_a exercise_n now_o this_o be_v communicate_v by_o the_o gospel_n it_o give_v life_n and_o power_n with_o such_o continual_a supply_n of_o grace_n as_o be_v able_a to_o dethrone_v sin_n and_o for_o ever_o to_o prohibit_v its_o return_n this_o than_o be_v the_o present_a case_n suppose_v and_o determine_v by_o the_o apostle_n you_o that_o be_v believer_n be_v all_o of_o you_o conflict_v with_o sin._n you_o find_v it_o always_o restless_a and_o disquiet_v sometime_o strong_a and_o powerful_a when_o it_o be_v in_o conjunction_n with_o any_o urgent_a temptation_n you_o be_v afraid_a it_o will_v utter_o prevail_v over_o you_o to_o the_o ruin_n of_o your_o soul_n hence_o you_o be_v weary_v with_o it_o groan_n under_o it_o and_o cry_v out_o for_o deliverance_n from_o it_o all_o these_o thing_n the_o apostle_n at_o large_a insist_o on_o in_o this_o and_o the_o next_o chapter_n but_o now_o say_v he_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n notwithstanding_o all_o these_o thing_n and_o all_o your_o fear_n upon_o they_o sin_n shall_v not_o prevail_v it_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o dominion_n it_o shall_v never_o ruin_v your_o soul_n but_o what_o ground_n have_v we_o for_o this_o hope_n what_o assurance_n of_o this_o success_n this_o you_o have_v say_v the_o apostle_n you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n or_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o grace_n it_o what_o then_o shall_v we_o do_v this_o tyrant_n this_o enemy_n be_v too_o hard_a for_o we_o what_o aid_n and_o assistance_n against_o it_o will_v it_o afford_v unto_o we_o what_o power_n will_v it_o communicate_v unto_o its_o destruction_n here_o the_o law_n be_v utter_o silent_a or_o say_v that_o nothing_o of_o this_o nature_n be_v commit_v unto_o it_o of_o god._n nay_o the_o strength_n it_o have_v it_o give_v unto_o sin_n for_o the_o condemnation_n of_o the_o sinner_n the_o strength_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o law._n but_o the_o gospel_n or_o the_o grace_n of_o it_o be_v the_o mean_n and_o instrument_n of_o god_n for_o the_o communication_n of_o internal_a spiritual_a strength_n unto_o believer_n by_o it_o do_v they_o receive_v supply_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o aid_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o subdue_a of_o sin_n and_o the_o destruction_n of_o its_o dominion_n by_o it_o they_o may_v say_v they_o can_v do_v all_o thing_n through_o he_o that_o enable_v they_o hereon_o then_o depend_v in_o the_o first_o place_n the_o assurance_n of_o the_o apostle_n assertion_n that_o sin_n shall_v not_o have_v the_o dominion_n over_o we_o because_o we_o be_v under_o grace_n we_o be_v in_o such_o a_o state_n as_o wherein_o we_o have_v supply_n in_o readiness_n to_o defeat_v all_o the_o attempt_v of_o sin_n for_o rule_n and_o dominion_n in_o we_o but_o some_o may_v say_v hereon_o they_o great_o fear_v they_o be_v not_o in_o this_o state_n for_o they_o do_v not_o find_v such_o supply_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o grace_n as_o to_o give_v they_o a_o conquest_n over_o sin_n they_o be_v still_o perplex_v with_o it_o and_o it_o be_v ready_a to_o invade_v the_o throne_n in_o their_o mind_n if_o it_o be_v not_o already_o possess_v of_o it_o wherefore_o they_o fear_v lest_o they_o be_v stranger_n from_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o answer_n hereunto_o the_o thing_n ensue_v be_v propose_v 1._o remember_v what_o have_v be_v declare_v concern_v the_o dominion_n of_o sin._n if_o it_o be_v not_o know_v what_o it_o be_v and_o wherein_o it_o do_v consist_v as_o some_o may_v please_v themselves_o whilst_o their_o condition_n be_v deplorable_a as_o it_o be_v with_o that_o we_o live_v in_o expectation_n of_o continual_a communication_n of_o life_n grace_n and_o strength_n from_o jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v our_o life_n and_o from_o who_o fullness_n we_o receive_v and_o grace_n for_o grace_n we_o may_v therefore_o in_o this_o case_n continual_o expostulate_v with_o our_o soul_n as_o david_n do_v why_o go_v you_o mourning_n because_o of_o the_o oppression_n of_o the_o enemy_n why_o be_v you_o cast_v down_o and_o why_o be_v you_o disquiet_v within_o we_o still_o hope_v in_o god_n he_o be_v the_o health_n of_o my_o countenance_n we_o may_v be_v sensible_a of_o great_a oppression_n from_o the_o power_n of_o this_o enemy_n this_o may_v cause_v we_o to_o go_v mourn_v all_o the_o day_n long_o and_o in_o some_o sense_n it_o ought_v so_o to_o do_v howbeit_o we_o gospel_n and_o when_o they_o be_v not_o cherish_v when_o they_o be_v not_o keep_v
any_o thing_n of_o a_o future_a reward_n hereafter_o something_o may_v be_v speak_v to_o alleviate_v their_o present_a misery_n but_o the_o wage_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n eternal_a death_n under_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o great_a god_n be_v all_o they_o be_v to_o look_v for_o the_o end_n of_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o give_v they_o up_o unto_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n and_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n for_o evermore_o four_o it_o keep_v man_n off_o from_o the_o participation_n of_o all_o real_a good_a here_o and_o hereafter_o what_o man_n under_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n do_v enjoy_v will_v quick_o appear_v to_o be_v as_o a_o thing_n of_o nought_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o have_v not_o the_o least_o taste_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o alone_o take_v out_o the_o poison_n of_o their_o enjoyment_n they_o have_v not_o the_o least_o view_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o christ_n without_o which_o they_o live_v in_o perpetual_a darkness_n like_o those_o who_o never_o behold_v the_o light_n nor_o sun._n they_o have_v no_o experience_n of_o the_o sweetness_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o gracious_a influence_n of_o life_n and_o strength_n and_o comfort_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n nor_o of_o that_o satisfaction_n and_o reward_n which_o be_v in_o holy_a obedience_n nor_o shall_v ever_o come_v to_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o god._n all_o these_o thing_n and_o sundry_a other_o of_o the_o like_a sort_n may_v be_v insist_v on_o and_o enlarge_v to_o manifest_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o mercy_n and_o privilege_n which_o be_v in_o a_o freedom_n from_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v here_o propose_v by_o the_o apostle_n but_o the_o principal_a design_n i_o intend_v be_v accomplish_v and_o i_o do_v but_o touch_v on_o these_o thing_n i_o hereof_o we_o may_v observe_v the_o thing_n that_o follow_v 1._o the_o conflict_n with_o sin_n make_v continual_a repentance_n and_o mortification_n absolute_o necessary_a will_v continue_v in_o we_o whilst_o we_o be_v in_o this_o world._n pretence_n of_o perfection_n here_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o scripture_n contrary_a to_o the_o universal_a experience_n of_o all_o believer_n and_o contrary_a to_o the_o sense_n and_o conscience_n of_o they_o by_o who_o they_o be_v plead_v as_o they_o make_v it_o evident_a every_o day_n we_o pray_v against_o it_o strive_v against_o it_o groan_n for_o deliverance_n from_o it_o and_o that_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n heal_v our_o nature_n not_o without_o success_n howbeit_o this_o success_n extend_v not_o unto_o its_o absolute_a abolition_n whilst_o we_o be_v in_o this_o world._n it_o will_v abide_v in_o we_o until_o the_o union_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n wherein_o it_o have_v incorporate_v itself_o be_v dissolve_v this_o be_v our_o lot_n and_o portion_n this_o be_v the_o consequent_a of_o our_o apostasy_n from_o god_n and_o the_o depravation_n of_o our_o nature_n thereby_o you_o will_v say_v then_o whereto_o serve_v the_o gospel_n and_o the_o grace_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o this_o case_n if_o it_o be_v not_o able_a to_o give_v we_o deliverance_n herein_o i_o answer_v it_o do_v give_v we_o a_o fourfold_a relief_n which_o amount_v virtual_o to_o a_o constant_a deliverance_n though_o sin_n will_v abide_v in_o we_o whilst_o we_o be_v in_o this_o world._n 1._o it_o be_v so_o order_v that_o the_o continuance_n of_o sin_n in_o we_o shall_v be_v the_o ground_n reason_n and_o occasion_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o put_v a_o lustre_n on_o our_o obedience_n some_o excellent_a grace_n as_o repentance_n and_o mortification_n can_v have_v no_o exercise_n if_o it_o be_v otherwise_o and_o whilst_o we_o be_v in_o this_o world_n there_o be_v a_o beauty_n in_o they_o that_o be_v a_o overbalance_n for_o the_o evil_a of_o the_o remainder_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o difficulty_n which_o be_v hereby_o put_v on_o our_o obedience_n call_v continual_o for_o the_o exercise_n and_o improvement_n of_o all_o grace_n render_v it_o the_o more_o valuable_a herein_o lie_v the_o spring_n of_o humility_n and_o self-resignation_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god._n this_o make_v we_o love_n and_o long_a for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o christ_n put_v a_o excellency_n on_o his_o mediation_n whence_o the_o apostle_n on_o the_o consideration_n of_o it_o fall_v into_o that_o ejaculation_n i_o thank_v god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n my_o lord_n rom._n seven_o 25._o this_o sweeten_v unto_o we_o our_o future_a rest_n and_o reward_n wherefore_o the_o continuance_n of_o we_o in_o this_o state_n and_o condition_n in_o this_o world_n a_o state_n of_o spiritual_a warfare_n be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o high_o suit_v unto_o divine_a wisdom_n consider_v the_o office_n and_o care_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n for_o our_o relief_n let_v we_o not_o complain_v or_o repine_v or_o faint_a but_o go_v on_o with_o christian_a fortitude_n unto_o the_o end_n and_o we_o shall_v have_v success_n for_o 2._o there_o be_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n such_o supply_n and_o aid_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n grant_v unto_o believer_n that_o sin_n shall_v never_o proceed_v further_o in_o they_o than_o be_v useful_a and_o needful_a for_o the_o exercise_n of_o their_o grace_n it_o shall_v never_o have_v its_o will_n upon_o they_o nor_o dominion_n over_o they_o as_o we_o have_v before_o declare_v 3._o there_o be_v mercy_n administer_v in_o and_o by_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o all_o that_o be_v evil_a in_o itself_o or_o in_o any_o of_o its_o effect_n there_o be_v no_o condemnation_n unto_o they_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n pardon_v mercy_n according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n do_v always_o disarm_v this_o sin_n in_o believer_n of_o its_o condemn_a power_n so_o that_o notwithstanding_o the_o utmost_a endeavour_n of_o it_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n they_o have_v peace_n with_o god._n 4._o there_o be_v a_o season_n when_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n it_o shall_v be_v utter_o abolish_v namely_o at_o death_n when_o the_o course_n of_o our_o obedience_n be_v finish_v wherefore_o to_o affirm_v that_o this_o sin_n and_o consequent_o a_o conflict_n with_o it_o do_v abide_v in_o believer_n whilst_o they_o be_v in_o this_o world_n be_v no_o disparagement_n unto_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n which_o give_v such_o a_o bless_a deliverance_n from_o it_o second_o there_o be_v a_o double_a conflict_n with_o and_o against_o sin._n the_o one_o be_v in_o those_o that_o be_v unregenerate_a consist_v in_o the_o rebellion_n of_o light_n and_o conscience_n against_o the_o rule_n of_o sin_n in_o many_o particular_a instance_n for_o although_o sin_n be_v enthrone_v in_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n yet_o the_o knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_n in_o the_o mind_n excite_v by_o the_o hope_n and_o fear_n of_o thing_n eternal_a will_v make_v head_n against_o it_o as_o unto_o the_o performance_n of_o sundry_a duty_n and_o abstinence_n from_o sin._n this_o conflict_n may_v be_v where_o sin_n be_v in_o the_o throne_n and_o may_v deceive_v themselves_o suppose_v it_o may_v be_v from_o the_o rule_n of_o grace_n when_o it_o be_v only_o from_o the_o rebellion_n of_o light_n and_o the_o charge_n of_o a_o conscience_n yet_o unsear_v but_o there_o be_v a_o conflict_n with_o sin_n where_o grace_n have_v the_o rule_n and_o be_v enthrone_v for_o although_o grace_n have_v the_o sovereignty_n in_o the_o mind_n and_o heart_n yet_o the_o remainder_n of_o sin_n especial_o in_o the_o corrupt_a affection_n will_v be_v continual_o rebel_a against_o it_o now_o this_o we_o say_v be_v the_o interest_n of_o all_o namely_o to_o inquire_v of_o what_o sort_n and_o kind_n that_o conflict_n with_o sin_n be_v which_o be_v in_o they_o if_o it_o be_v of_o the_o first_o sort_n they_o may_v yet_o be_v under_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n if_o of_o the_o latter_a they_o be_v free_v from_o it_o wherefore_o whilst_o the_o mind_n be_v dubious_a in_o this_o case_n and_o undetermined_a many_o evil_a consequence_n it_o will_v be_v perplex_v withal_o i_o shall_v name_v some_o of_o they_o 1._o such_o a_o soul_n can_v have_v no_o solid_a peace_n because_o it_o have_v not_o satisfaction_n what_o state_n it_o do_v belong_v unto_o 2._o it_o can_v receive_v refreshment_n by_o gospel_n consolation_n in_o any_o condition_n
