must_v know_v of_o our_o infirmity_n as_o first_o a_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o want_n of_o age_n for_o want_v of_o time_n to_o gather_v strength_n the_o lord_n christ_n you_o must_v know_v have_v lamb_n in_o his_o fold_n as_o well_o as_o sheep_n and_o he_o have_v plant_n in_o his_o orchard_n as_o well_o as_o strong_a tree_n and_o babe_n as_o well_o as_o strong_a men._n now_o say_v the_o apostle_n i_o write_v to_o you_o babe_n and_o little_a child_n because_o your_o sin_n be_v pardon_v for_o his_o namesake_n 1_o john_n 2.12_o observe_v there_o that_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v bestow_v not_o only_o upon_o young_a man_n that_o be_v strong_a to_o resist_v temptation_n not_o only_o upon_o age_a man_n that_o be_v well_o experience_v in_o the_o way_n of_o grace_n but_o it_o be_v bestow_v even_o upon_o babe_n i_o write_v unto_o you_o little_a child_n because_o your_o sin_n be_v pardon_v for_o his_o namesake_n second_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v also_o from_o a_o want_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n either_o when_o man_n want_v milk_n or_o the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n 1_o pet._n 2.2_o or_o have_v but_o little_a of_o it_o three_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o some_o secret_a corruption_n that_o be_v undiscovered_a in_o our_o first_o conversion_n this_o may_v be_v a_o occasion_n of_o a_o infirmity_n for_o that_o may_v both_o weaken_v the_o soul_n and_o exceed_o distemper_v and_o disquiet_v it_o four_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o forsake_v sound_n and_o solid_a truth_n and_o disquiet_v our_o thought_n with_o doubtful_a disputation_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v they_o rom._n 14.1_o when_o man_n trouble_v their_o head_n with_o trifle_n or_o with_o matter_n of_o less_o moment_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n neglect_v the_o marrow_n of_o religion_n even_o as_o little_a child_n that_o forsake_v wholesome_a food_n and_o feed_v on_o green_a apple_n and_o so_o put_v their_o body_n into_o distemper_n five_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o this_o when_o our_o affection_n be_v too_o much_o carry_v out_o after_o the_o world_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n for_o certain_a it_o be_v look_v how_o much_o the_o soul_n be_v carry_v out_o after_o the_o world_n so_o much_o the_o weak_a it_o be_v the_o strong_a our_o love_n to_o the_o world_n be_v the_o weak_a be_v our_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o grace_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n six_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o the_o not_o right_a order_n of_o our_o company_n dead_a company_n dead_a and_o barren_a company_n many_o time_n make_v dead_a and_o barren_a heart_n seven_o our_o infirmity_n may_v arise_v from_o our_o lose_v our_o first_o love_n remit_v of_o the_o zeal_n and_o intention_n and_o forwardness_n that_o once_o we_o have_v in_o the_o way_n of_o grace_n when_o we_o grow_v loose_a and_o slothful_a in_o the_o service_n of_o our_o god_n and_o do_v not_o stir_v up_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o we_o 2_o tim._n 1.6_o exercise_v you_o know_v increase_v strength_n but_o want_v of_o exercise_n many_o time_n occasion_n weakness_n when_o a_o man_n pray_v cold_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n cold_o communicate_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n cold_o the_o more_o coldness_n there_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n the_o more_o weakness_n there_o will_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n these_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o infirmity_n three_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v what_o be_v the_o sign_n and_o symptom_n of_o a_o infirmity_n brief_o i_o shall_v give_v you_o these_o four_o first_o where_o there_o be_v infirmity_n there_o be_v spiritual_a life_n though_o there_o be_v want_n of_o spiritual_a strength_n this_o be_v a_o certain_a sign_n of_o a_o infirmity_n you_o know_v there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o a_o dead_a man_n and_o a_o weak_a man_n a_o dead_a man_n that_o have_v not_o life_n and_o a_o weak_a man_n that_o have_v life_n and_o want_v strength_n it_o can_v be_v say_v of_o any_o wicked_a man_n that_o he_o be_v a_o weak_a man_n but_o he_o be_v a_o dead_a man_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o do_v any_o thing_n weak_o but_o he_o do_v it_o wicked_o observe_v what_o our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o a_o bruise_a reed_n he_o speak_v of_o it_o as_o a_o thing_n that_o yet_o have_v some_o life_n in_o it_o for_o a_o reed_n though_o it_o be_v exceed_o weak_a that_o it_o be_v shake_v with_o every_o wind_n yet_o by_o the_o side_n of_o the_o water_n it_o grow_v it_o have_v life_n in_o it_o make_v this_o sure_a to_o thyself_o that_o thou_o have_v life_n in_o thou_o or_o else_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o doctrine_n can_v belong_v to_o thou_o if_o so_o be_v thou_o have_v life_n in_o thou_o though_o thy_o grace_n be_v weak_a yet_o if_o thou_o have_v life_n it_o be_v but_o a_o infirmity_n but_o you_o will_v say_v how_o may_v i_o know_v i_o have_v life_n in_o i_o i_o answer_v you_o may_v know_v it_o thus_o first_o thou_o may_v know_v it_o by_o thy_o spiritual_a feel_n thou_o will_v feel_v what_o hurt_v thou_o thou_o will_v feel_v sin_n to_o be_v a_o great_a burden_n and_o thou_o will_v groan_v under_o it_o and_o thou_o will_v bemoan_v thyself_o like_o ephraim_n jer._n 31.18_o i_o have_v sure_o hear_v ephraim_n bemoan_v himself_o thus_o thou_o have_v chastise_v i_o and_o i_o be_v chastise_v as_o a_o bullock_n unaccustomed_a to_o the_o yoke_n turn_v thou_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v be_v turn_v for_o thou_o be_v the_o lord_n my_o god_n sure_o after_o that_o i_o be_v turn_v i_o repent_v and_o after_o that_o

corrupt_v that_o doctrine_n in_o this_o second_o chapter_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o minister_n to_o give_v wholesome_a food_n unto_o their_o people_n but_o they_o must_v also_o give_v they_o antidote_n against_o the_o poison_n of_o corrupt_a doctrine_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o minister_n to_o feed_v their_o people_n but_o they_o must_v also_o fence_v their_o people_n against_o wolf_n that_o will_v devour_v the_o flock_n thus_o do_v the_o holy_a apostle_n here_o he_o forewarn_v these_o colossian_n and_o so_o fore-arm_n they_o against_o those_o seducer_n that_o will_v beguile_v they_o with_o philosophy_n with_o legal_a ceremony_n and_o worship_v of_o angel_n and_o other_o such_o corrupt_a doctrine_n mention_v here_o in_o this_o second_o chapter_n to_o that_o end_n he_o lay_v down_o this_o weighty_a rule_n for_o they_o to_o observe_v as_o you_o have_v therefore_o receive_v the_o lord_n christ_n so_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o in_o the_o text_n you_o may_v take_v notice_n of_o two_o thing_n first_o you_o have_v here_o a_o holy_a rule_n prescribe_v in_o these_o word_n as_o you_o have_v receive_v christ_n jesus_n the_o lord_n second_o a_o practice_n answer_v that_o rule_n here_o enjoin_v so_o also_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o as_o you_o have_v the_o word_n will_v admit_v of_o a_o twofold_a interpretation_n either_o take_v the_o sense_n thus_o as_o you_o have_v receive_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n by_o epaphras_n who_o be_v a_o faithful_a minister_n of_o christ_n chap._n 1_o 7_o so_o do_v you_o persevere_v in_o that_o doctrine_n and_o live_v according_a to_o it_o this_o be_v the_o usual_a interpretation_n give_v of_o the_o word_n or_o else_o they_o may_v be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n as_o you_o have_v receive_v the_o lord_n christ_n that_o be_v as_o you_o have_v receive_v he_o into_o your_o heart_n by_o faith_n who_o be_v the_o way_n to_o eternal_a life_n so_o walk_v you_o in_o he_o and_o as_o you_o have_v receive_v grace_n from_o christ_n so_o according_o act_v that_o grace_n that_o you_o have_v receive_v this_o be_v the_o interpretation_n that_o some_o give_v i_o shall_v stick_v rather_o to_o this_o latter_a interpretation_n in_o the_o handle_n of_o this_o text._n many_o doctrine_n may_v be_v gather_v from_o this_o verse_n but_o because_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o dispatch_v it_o in_o one_o sermon_n as_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o seasonable_a text_n a_o suitable_a subject_n for_o a_o day_n wherein_o we_o have_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o precious_a ordinance_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n i_o will_v name_v but_o two_o or_o three_o doctrine_n and_o pitch_n upon_o the_o principal_n first_o as_o you_o have_v receive_v christ_n jesus_n observe_v where_o the_o gospel_n be_v right_o receive_v jesus_n repentance_n to_o israel_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n jesus_n christ_n will_v be_v a_o saviour_n to_o none_o but_o those_o to_o who_o he_o be_v a_o prince_n bishop_n davenant_n in_o his_o commentary_n upon_o the_o colossian_n say_v the_o false_a apostle_n preach_v christ_n and_o their_o disciple_n likewise_o receive_v christ_n but_o neither_o do_v the_o false_a apostle_n preach_v he_o nor_o their_o disciple_n receive_v he_o as_o lord_n but_o they_o receive_v he_o as_o a_o fellow-servant_n with_o moses_n therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n if_o you_o receive_v christ_n right_o you_o must_v receive_v he_o as_o a_o lord_n three_o here_o i_o may_v observe_v walk_v you_o in_o he_o that_o christ_n be_v the_o way_n the_o live_a way_n the_o only_a way_n wherein_o we_o shall_v walk_v receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n even_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n but_o than_o second_o there_o be_v a_o gradual_a receive_n of_o he_o and_o of_o this_o speak_v the_o apostle_n in_o this_o chapter_n col._n 2.19_o and_o not_o hold_v the_o head_n from_o which_o all_o the_o body_n by_o joint_n and_o band_n have_v nourishment_n minister_v and_o knit_v together_o increase_v with_o the_o increase_n of_o god_n the_o whole_a body_n that_o be_v the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o every_o member_n be_v knit_v to_o the_o head_n that_o be_v to_o jesus_n christ_n have_v nourishment_n supply_v from_o the_o head_n so_o the_o member_n of_o christ_n be_v supply_v with_o nourishment_n from_o god_n increase_v with_o the_o increase_n of_o
