and_o refuse_v to_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o great_a the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v plain_a from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v before_o for_o one_o be_v only_o fail_v to_o do_v a_o duty_n so_o well_o as_o man_n shall_v and_o aught_o to_o do_v it_o but_o the_o other_o be_v refuse_v the_o duty_n altogether_o and_o choose_v rather_o to_o live_v in_o a_o total_a disregard_n of_o it_o and_o man_n that_o do_v their_o duty_n though_o not_o so_o well_o as_o they_o shall_v yet_o certain_o be_v more_o excusable_a than_o those_o that_o altogether_o disregard_n and_o neglect_v it_o the_o universal_a reason_n as_o i_o hint_v before_o of_o all_o the_o world_n will_v allow_v this_o every_o man_n judge_v by_o this_o measure_n himself_o and_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o god_n will_v do_v so_o too_o if_o i_o be_o a_o tutor_n or_o a_o master_n or_o a_o parent_n i_o can_v much_o easy_o forgive_v my_o scholar_n or_o servant_n or_o child_n that_o out_o of_o some_o regard_n to_o not_o according_a to_o what_o he_o have_v not_o wilful_a design_a failure_n in_o duty_n be_v extreme_o provoke_v i_o confess_v and_o he_o that_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o that_o sense_n i_o be_o far_o from_o excuse_v or_o extenuate_v his_o crime_n but_o fail_n that_o be_v almost_o unavoidable_a the_o effect_n of_o human_a infirmity_n and_o frailty_n only_o or_o defect_n only_o of_o knowledge_n and_o skill_n be_v great_o pitiable_a and_o scarce_o ever_o severe_o reckon_v for_o by_o god_n or_o man._n sect_n iii_o these_o premise_n be_v now_o lay_v i_o advance_v the_o conclusion_n that_o result_v from_o they_o that_o therefore_o the_o sin_n and_o danger_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o can_v never_o excuse_v a_o man_n from_o not_o eat_v at_o all_o 1._o for_o first_o one_o sin_n can_v never_o excuse_v for_o another_o and_o much_o less_o can_v the_o possibility_n of_o sin_v become_v a_o good_a reason_n for_o actual_o do_v so_o apply_v it_o to_o the_o case_n before_o we_o and_o the_o thing_n be_v plain_a a_o man_n may_v sin_v in_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o he_o certain_o do_v so_o in_o not_o eat_v at_o all_o and_o therefore_o deserve_v something_o a_o worse_a character_n than_o a_o fool_n only_o if_o he_o can_v think_v that_o the_o possible_a danger_n of_o the_o one_o can_v expiate_v and_o atone_v for_o the_o certainty_n of_o the_o other_o he_o do_v ill_a enough_o that_o commit_v one_o sin_n but_o he_o that_o commit_v another_o upon_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o first_o do_v much_o worse_a 2._o second_o it_o be_v altogether_o unreasonable_a and_o default_n and_o be_v what_o with_o competent_a care_n we_o may_v redress_v the_o plain_a english_a of_o what_o i_o mean_v be_v this_o if_o man_n be_v unfit_a for_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o in_o any_o danger_n of_o communicate_v unworthy_o in_o it_o it_o be_v their_o fault_n and_o it_o be_v such_o a_o fault_n as_o they_o both_o shall_v and_o may_v redress_v and_o therefore_o they_o can_v reasonable_o expect_v to_o be_v excuse_v from_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o it_o be_v not_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v for_o a_o good_a reason_n of_o their_o all_o i_o purpose_v to_o say_v in_o these_o four_o that_o follow_v 1._o that_o man_n be_v in_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o be_v pure_o and_o sole_o their_o own_o fault_n so_o that_o they_o can_v be_v excuse_v from_o eat_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o 2._o this_o danger_n ought_v to_o be_v remove_v and_o care_v take_v to_o put_v themselves_o into_o better_a circumstance_n in_o any_o proportion_n to_o this_o in_o the_o text_n be_v allow_v to_o be_v so_o yet_o still_o i_o say_v this_o be_v owe_v pure_o to_o their_o own_o fault_n if_o it_o be_v upon_o they_o and_o incur_v sole_o by_o their_o own_o carelessness_n there_o be_v i_o confess_v some_o little_a imperfection_n and_o fail_n incident_a to_o man_n which_o it_o may_v be_v their_o utmost_a industry_n and_o care_n while_o in_o this_o lapse_v state_n can_v get_v free_a from_o but_o these_o be_v such_o as_o need_v not_o come_v into_o our_o present_a account_n for_o they_o neither_o put_v man_n person_n out_o of_o show_v this_o in_o some_o other_o instance_n beside_o that_o under_o present_a consideration_n be_v not_o the_o truth_n too_o visible_a in_o this_o alone_a for_o by_o this_o mean_n man_n have_v be_v fright_v from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o as_o i_o observe_v before_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o total_a disregard_n and_o neglect_n of_o it_o choose_v rather_o and_o think_v it_o the_o safe_a side_n of_o the_o question_n not_o to_o communicate_v at_o all_o than_o to_o run_v a_o apparent_a hazard_n of_o damnation_n by_o do_v so_o and_o i_o must_v confess_v be_v this_o real_o the_o case_n they_o that_o minister_n before_o the_o lord_n may_v by_o the_o sin_n and_o punishment_n of_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n learn_v to_o be_v very_o careful_a in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o sacred_a function_n so_o every_o christian_n by_o consider_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o corinthian_n and_o what_o befall_v they_o for_o it_o may_v learn_v how_o great_o it_o concern_v he_o to_o be_v devout_a and_o reverend_a at_o the_o lord_n table_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o look_v like_o a_o profanation_n of_o that_o sacred_a ordinance_n but_o as_o i_o do_v not_o know_v any_o reason_n why_o he_o shall_v think_v every_o little_a failure_n of_o he_o to_o be_v the_o same_o unworthy_a eat_n and_o drink_v that_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o no_o more_o do_v i_o know_v any_o cause_n why_o he_o shall_v present_o dread_v the_o same_o punishment_n that_o be_v inflict_v upon_o they_o 2._o but_o i_o advance_v a_o second_o proposition_n in_o further_a answer_n to_o this_o question_n viz._n that_o although_o this_o be_v the_o only_a true_a notion_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o this_o text_n yet_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o man_n may_v fix_v that_o notion_n upon_o other_o thing_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o analogy_n and_o proportion_n i_o mean_v there_o may_v perhaps_o be_v some_o other_o thing_n that_o may_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o some_o proportion_n to_o what_o the_o corinthian_n do_v so_o that_o i_o be_o far_o from_o say_v that_o no_o man_n needs_o fear_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o he_o that_o be_v drink_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n there_o may_v possible_o be_v other_o thing_n to_o bring_v a_o man_n within_o that_o guilt_n as_o well_o as_o that_o and_o this_o be_v as_o much_o i_o think_v as_o can_v be_v require_v in_o this_o objection_n but_o then_o i_o say_v withal_o these_o two_o thing_n which_o i_o will_v have_v always_o consider_v as_o the_o condition_n of_o this_o concession_n 1._o that_o whatever_o those_o thing_n be_v that_o man_n think_v to_o bring_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o this_o guilt_n they_o do_v it_o but_o reductive_o and_o as_o i_o say_v but_o only_o by_o analogy_n and_o proportion_n those_o sin_n whatever_o they_o be_v be_v not_o primary_o intend_v in_o this_o place_n but_o bring_v in_o only_o by_o our_o own_o art_n of_o deduction_n and_o reason_v in_o which_o we_o and_o threaten_v it_o with_o a_o very_a sharp_a and_o severe_a punishment_n and_o yet_o three_o after_o all_o this_o he_o do_v not_o give_v they_o any_o the_o least_o allowance_n or_o liberty_n to_o stay_v from_o this_o holy_a service_n till_o they_o have_v repent_v of_o and_o reform_v sufficient_o this_o miscarriage_n he_o do_v not_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o unworthiness_n render_v they_o unfit_a to_o come_v to_o the_o table_n of_o the_o lord_n or_o give_v they_o a_o dispensation_n from_o it_o he_o do_v not_o advise_v they_o to_o stay_v away_o for_o the_o future_a till_o they_o have_v better_o fit_v themselves_o for_o fear_v of_o damnation_n by_o come_v unworthy_o you_o do_v not_o read_v one_o word_n speak_v by_o he_o to_o any_o such_o purpose_n but_o rather_o direct_o the_o such_o thought_n of_o this_o matter_n then_o as_o some_o man_n have_v now_o he_o never_o think_v that_o the_o sin_n or_o danger_n of_o do_v a_o duty_n amiss_o may_v be_v make_v a_o exception_n against_o do_v it_o at_o all_o or_o that_o threaten_a damnation_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o shall_v scare_v man_n from_o eat_v and_o drink_v at_o all_o he_o take_v what_o care_n he_o can_v extreme_o faulty_a in_o this_o thing_n not_o only_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o eat_v unworthy_o but_o actual_o do_v so_o in_o the_o gross_a manner_n and_o yet_o the_o apostle_n say_v not_o one_o word_n of_o their_o stay_n away_o upon_o that_o reason_n which_o he_o certain_o will_v have_v do_v have_v he_o think_v this_o cause_n of_o just_a exception_n and_o that_o it_o have_v be_v better_a for_o they_o to_o stay_v whole_o away_o from_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n than_o to_o contract_v so_o great_a a_o guilt_n and_o incur_v so_o dreadful_a a_o punishment_n by_o their_o come_n amiss_o and_o not_o peremptory_a precept_n and_o make_v matter_n of_o their_o necessary_a and_o fix_a duty_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o christian_n may_v look_v upon_o and_o esteem_v it_o as_o such_o i_o beg_v that_o these_o few_o thing_n among_o many_o other_o may_v be_v consider_v by_o they_o 1._o that_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v institute_v ordain_v and_o command_v by_o our_o lord_n in_o word_n as_o express_v and_o plain_a as_o ever_o any_o thing_n can_v or_o ever_o be_v command_v by_o he_o i_o shall_v need_v for_o your_o satisfaction_n in_o this_o but_o bare_o to_o repeat_v the_o word_n of_o the_o evangelist_n three_o of_o who_o mention_n the_o institution_n of_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n mat._n 26.26_o 27_o 28._o and_o as_o they_o be_v eat_v jesus_n take_v bread_n and_o
blood_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o whatever_o that_o expression_n may_v seem_v to_o imply_v it_o do_v real_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o the_o expression_n in_o this_o text_n that_o i_o be_o all_o this_o while_n consider_v it_o mean_v only_o this_o in_o plain_a english_a that_o such_o person_n be_v guilty_a of_o a_o great_a disrespect_n and_o dishonour_n to_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n of_o which_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n in_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n be_v the_o representative_n and_o symbol_n for_o a_o profanation_n of_o these_o reflect_v upon_o he_o who_o they_o represent_v and_o be_v ever_o interpret_v and_o think_v to_o do_v so_o the_o sense_n be_v well_o express_v in_o this_o text_n not_o discern_v the_o lord_n body_n i._n e._n not_o consider_v what_o a_o sacred_a and_o venerable_a thing_n they_o represent_v and_o signify_v and_o therefore_o use_v they_o with_o as_o little_a respect_n or_o religious_a regard_n as_o man_n do_v common_a bread_n and_o wine_n in_o their_o own_o house_n this_o i_o have_v show_v the_o corinthian_n do_v and_o something_o worse_o and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o guilt_n of_o such_o a_o gross_a profanation_n can_v well_o be_v represent_v in_o too_o terrible_a a_o phrase_n so_o that_o still_o for_o any_o thing_n either_o say_v in_o this_o text_n or_o that_o can_v reasonable_o be_v deduce_v from_o the_o phrase_n of_o it_o my_o argument_n stand_v firm_a viz._n that_o there_o be_v no_o great_a punishment_n threaten_v to_o a_o failure_n in_o this_o than_o may_v be_v dread_v upon_o the_o like_a failure_n in_o other_o service_n of_o our_o religion_n damnation_n signify_v here_o only_o divine_a judgement_n and_o punishment_n at_o large_a and_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o restrain_v it_o only_o to_o that_o tremendous_a punishment_n in_o hell_n yea_o there_o be_v that_o plain_a in_o the_o context_n which_o be_v evident_o against_o that_o sense_n of_o it_o for_o when_o the_o apostle_n have_v speak_v of_o damnation_n here_o he_o present_o instance_v in_o temporal_a infliction_n be_v sick_a and_o weak_a and_o fall_a asleep_a all_o which_o he_o not_o only_o call_v be_v chastened_a in_o this_o world_n but_o be_v chastened_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n and_o then_o consonant_o to_o this_o the_o eat_n and_o drink_v this_o damnation_n to_o a_o man_n self_n signify_v no_o more_o than_o expose_v a_o man_n self_n and_o become_v obnoxious_a to_o these_o punishment_n and_o chastening_n of_o the_o lord_n these_o thing_n i_o think_v be_v plain_a sufficient_a to_o make_v out_o the_o truth_n of_o my_o argument_n and_o in_o consequence_n of_o that_o to_o show_v how_o much_o wide_a of_o the_o apostle_n mean_v here_o those_o man_n argue_v that_o talk_v so_o dreadful_o of_o everlasting_a damnation_n be_v eminent_o due_a to_o every_o failure_n in_o man_n receive_v the_o holy_a sacrament_n and_o that_o they_o stand_v accountable_a to_o god_n for_o a_o great_a sin_n and_o a_o high_a profanation_n of_o religion_n in_o this_o than_o they_o do_v by_o their_o miscarriage_n in_o other_o duty_n and_o service_n of_o it_o sect_n iii_o well_o but_o because_o it_o may_v yet_o be_v object_v against_o the_o purpose_n of_o this_o argument_n that_o whatever_o the_o minute_n and_o prime_a signification_n be_v yet_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o can_v but_o be_v account_v a_o great_a sin_n high_o affrontive_a to_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o therefore_o a_o high_a provocation_n of_o god_n and_o a_o fault_n that_o he_o may_v most_o just_o punish_v with_o eternal_a damnation_n therefore_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o propose_v on_o this_o argument_n that_o whatever_o the_o meaning_n of_o damnation_n be_v in_o this_o place_n yet_o man_n do_v not_o deal_v fair_o in_o urge_v it_o against_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a sacrament_n or_o stay_v from_o it_o upon_o that_o reason_n and_o this_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v good_a upon_o these_o two_o reason_n among_o other_o first_o because_o if_o it_o shall_v mean_v eternal_a damnation_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o threaten_v to_o every_o degree_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o but_o only_o to_o that_o gross_a and_o monstrous_a do_v this_o that_o the_o corinthian_n be_v guilty_a of_o and_o second_o because_o this_o damnation_n do_v not_o restrain_v man_n from_o other_o sin_n which_o they_o must_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v as_o damn_v as_o this_o 1._o the_o first_o of_o these_o i_o need_v but_o just_a name_n because_o i_o have_v insist_v upon_o it_o the_o signification_n of_o it_o beyond_o the_o proper_a intendment_n and_o meaning_n or_o to_o take_v a_o liberty_n of_o fright_v people_n with_o the_o danger_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o upon_o every_o failure_n when_o the_o apostle_n use_v that_o phrase_n only_o in_o the_o case_n of_o such_o a_o prodigious_a profanation_n of_o the_o sacrament_n as_o the_o corinthian_n be_v now_o guilty_a of_o i_o have_v already_o say_v their_o miscarriage_n may_v well_o be_v count_v eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o indeed_o but_o therefore_o to_o infer_v that_o every_o failure_n to_o eat_v and_o drink_v so_o reverent_o so_o fit_o and_o so_o becoming_o as_o man_n shall_v be_v present_o eat_v and_o drink_v unworthy_o in_o proportion_n to_o they_o be_v put_v our_o own_o sense_n upon_o scripture_n and_o judge_v the_o thing_n of_o religion_n by_o our_o own_o measure_n only_o and_o second_o i_o add_v that_o it_o be_v unreasonable_a as_o well_o as_o uncharitable_a to_o affright_v man_n with_o danger_n of_o the_o same_o punishment_n when_o they_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o the_o same_o sin_n it_o be_v god_n prerogative_n to_o apportion_n punishment_n unto_o sin_n and_o not_o we_o and_o as_o much_o our_o duty_n as_o it_o be_v our_o interest_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n there_o where_o it_o be_v plain_a the_o divine_a mercy_n do_v it_o be_v great_o for_o our_o comfort_n and_o the_o ease_n of_o our_o guilty_a mind_n that_o we_o have_v a_o god_n to_o serve_v who_o transact_v with_o we_o by_o the_o measure_n of_o a_o great_a mercy_n and_o a_o infinite_a goodness_n that_o weigh_v we_o not_o as_o i_o observe_v before_o by_o grain_n and_o scruple_n but_o rate_v our_o service_n and_o our_o life_n too_o by_o the_o general_a frame_n and_o bent_n of_o they_o and_o provide_v we_o be_v industrious_a and_o honest_a in_o the_o main_a and_o sincere_o endeavour_v to_o do_v our_o best_a will_v accept_v they_o and_o not_o be_v extreme_a and_o rigorous_a to_o mark_v every_o yea_o who_o tremble_v at_o the_o very_a thought_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o amuse_v and_o perplex_v with_o apprehension_n and_o fear_n of_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o it_o i_o know_v not_o i_o
