whereof_o hatred_n be_v the_o root_n and_o the_o rest_n be_v the_o branch_n three_o christ_n lay_v 3_o down_o the_o cause_n for_o which_o this_o persecution_n shall_v be_v inflict_v namely_o for_o my_o sake_n or_o as_o s._n luke_n say_v for_o the_o son_n of_o man_n sake_n which_o expound_v this_o phrase_n for_o righteousness_n sake_n v_o 10._o to_o wit_n for_o profess_v believe_v and_o maintain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n teach_v by_o christ_n touch_v remission_n of_o sin_n and_o life_n everlasting_a to_o they_o that_o believe_v the_o use_n in_o general_a we_o see_v that_o christ_n urge_v this_o rule_n of_o blessedness_n more_o large_o than_o the_o former_a this_o he_o do_v for_o special_a cause_n first_o hereby_o he_o will_v teach_v his_o disciple_n and_o we_o in_o they_o that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n afdict_v of_o god_n his_o church_n in_o this_o world_n shall_v be_v under_o the_o cross_n in_o such_o affliction_n and_o persecution_n as_o their_o blood_n shall_v be_v seek_v for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o faith_n and_o this_o he_o will_v have_v to_o be_v the_o state_n of_o his_o church_n for_o special_a cause_n first_o that_o the_o member_n thereof_o by_o their_o affliction_n may_v be_v acquaint_v with_o their_o own_o want_n and_o infirmity_n which_o they_o will_v not_o much_o regard_n if_o they_o be_v free_v from_o the_o cross_n second_o that_o by_o affliction_n they_o may_v be_v keep_v from_o many_o grievous_a sin_n into_o which_o they_o will_v fall_v if_o they_o live_v in_o peace_n three_o that_o other_o see_v the_o correction_n of_o the_o church_n for_o sin_n may_v learn_v thereby_o to_o hate_v and_o avoid_v sin_n and_o last_o that_o the_o church_n may_v glorify_v god_n in_o a_o constant_a and_o courageous_a maintenance_n of_o his_o truth_n unto_o death_n for_o even_o in_o persecution_n be_v god_n truth_n preserve_v against_o the_o reason_n of_o man_n wisdom_n patient_a suffering_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v faithful_a witnes-bearing_a thereunto_o second_o christ_n have_v new_o call_v the_o twelve_o out_o of_o all_o his_o disciple_n to_o be_v apostle_n whereupon_o they_o may_v think_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v 1â—_n advance_v to_o some_o outward_a honour_n ease_n and_o peace_n but_o christ_n hereby_o call_v they_o from_o that_o conceit_n &_o put_v they_o in_o mind_n of_o affliction_n which_o shall_v befall_v they_o in_o time_n to_o come_v that_o when_o it_o come_v they_o may_v the_o better_o endure_v it_o and_o thus_o he_o prepare_v all_o church_n to_o suffer_v affliction_n yea_o and_o we_o ourselves_o must_v hereby_o learn_v in_o time_n of_o peace_n to_o prepare_v ourselves_o against_o the_o day_n of_o trial_n because_o his_o will_n be_v that_o whosoever_o will_v live_v godly_a in_o christ_n jesus_n must_v suffer_v affliction_n three_o hereby_o christ_n intend_v to_o lay_v a_o ground_n of_o comfort_n to_o his_o disciple_n in_o their_o persecution_n by_o a_o plain_a and_o full_a declaration_n of_o their_o happiness_n that_o suffer_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n in_o that_o they_o have_v sure_a title_n to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n out_o of_o which_o estate_n no_o sound_a comfort_n can_v be_v have_v and_o this_o same_o must_v we_o lay_v up_o in_o store_n against_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o we_o live_v now_o in_o peace_n by_o god_n mercy_n but_o we_o know_v not_o how_o long_o it_o will_v continue_v we_o have_v be_v threaten_v and_o dangerous_o assault_v by_o our_o enemy_n many_o a_o time_n beside_o the_o rod_n of_o god_n shake_v with_o his_o own_o hand_n against_o we_o and_o we_o may_v not_o think_v our_o peace_n will_v last_v always_o but_o see_v our_o sin_n increase_v we_o may_v be_v sure_a our_o joy_n and_o peace_n will_v one_o day_n be_v turn_v into_o sorrow_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v good_a to_o have_v this_o rule_n engrave_v in_o our_o heart_n that_o they_o be_v bless_v which_o suffer_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n if_o therefore_o tribulation_n come_v for_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o this_o promise_n of_o blessedness_n and_o that_o will_v be_v our_o comfort_n more_o particular_o in_o the_o word_n of_o this_o rule_n bless_a be_v they_o etc._n etc._n â—_o christ_n will_v let_v we_o see_v that_o deadly_a hatred_n which_o the_o world_n bear_v unto_o god_n church_n for_o so_o much_o the_o word_n persecute_v import_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o hatred_n may_v be_v these_o first_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o the_o ministry_n 1_o of_o the_o gospel_n seek_v the_o ruin_n of_o the_o devil_n kingdom_n who_o be_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o world_n the_o devil_n therefore_o rage_v and_o inflame_v the_o heart_n of_o his_o instrument_n with_o malice_n against_o god_n church_n that_o they_o may_v persecute_v and_o quite_o destroy_v it_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a second_o god_n 2_o church_n be_v a_o peculiar_a people_n sever_v from_o the_o world_n in_o profession_n doctrine_n and_o conversation_n and_o therefore_o the_o world_n hate_v they_o joh._n 15._o 19_o and_o this_o very_a point_n may_v serve_v to_o stay_v our_o heart_n when_o we_o shall_v be_v persecute_v for_o the_o profession_n and_o embrace_v of_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n for_o the_o world_n do_v hate_n god_n church_n and_o will_v do_v to_o the_o end_n there_o must_v be_v enmity_n between_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o serpent_n and_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o 3._o woman_n as_o than_o he_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o flesh_n persecute_v he_o that_o be_v bear_v after_o the_o spirit_n so_o be_v it_o now_o gal._n 4._o 29._o second_o observe_v that_o this_o hatred_n of_o the_o world_n be_v not_o only_o against_o the_o member_n of_o god_n church_n but_o even_o against_o christ_n holy_a religion_n so_o christ_n say_v for_o my_o sake_n or_o for_o my_o religion_n sake_n this_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v as_o a_o most_o excellent_a argument_n to_o persuade_v our_o conscience_n that_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n which_o we_o profess_v be_v the_o true_a and_o bless_a doctrine_n of_o god_n because_o the_o wicked_a world_n do_v always_o hate_v it_o yea_o it_o hate_v we_o also_o for_o the_o gospel_n sake_n now_o if_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o man_n it_o will_v fit_v their_o nature_n well_o and_o they_o will_v love_v it_o for_o the_o world_n do_v love_v his_o own_o joh._n 15._o 19_o three_o if_o they_o be_v bless_v that_o suffer_v persecution_n then_o how_o may_v any_o man_n lawful_o fly_v in_o persecution_n answer_n a_o man_n may_v fly_v in_o persecution_n with_o good_a conscience_n these_o two_o thing_n observe_v first_o that_o he_o be_v persecution_n not_o hinder_v by_o his_o particular_a call_n second_o that_o he_o have_v liberty_n offer_v by_o god_n providence_n to_o escape_v the_o hand_n of_o his_o enemy_n the_o intent_n of_o this_o verse_n be_v not_o to_o forbid_v flight_n but_o to_o comfort_v such_o as_o be_v in_o persecution_n and_o can_v escape_v for_o the_o word_n signify_v such_o persecution_n as_o be_v by_o pursuit_n and_o oppression_n which_o can_v be_v avoid_v last_o see_v they_o be_v bless_v that_o suffer_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n whether_o be_v they_o always_o curse_v that_o suffer_v deserve_o for_o a_o evil_a cause_n for_o the_o contrary_a reason_n be_v in_o contrary_n ans._n they_o be_v always_o accurse_v save_v in_o one_o case_n to_o wit_n unless_o they_o repent_v for_o their_o unrighteousness_n for_o which_o they_o be_v afflict_v but_o by_o true_a repentance_n they_o become_v bless_v the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n have_v live_v in_o theft_n and_o be_v therefore_o attach_v condemn_v and_o crucify_v and_o so_o he_o suffer_v for_o unrighteousness_n but_o yet_o he_o be_v save_v because_o he_o repent_v and_o believe_v in_o christ._n it_o be_v add_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n in_o this_o clause_n we_o be_v teach_v a_o special_a lesson_n namely_o that_o when_o god_n shall_v lay_v upon_o we_o any_o affliction_n or_o persecution_n as_o imprisonment_n banishment_n loss_n of_o good_n or_o of_o life_n itself_o we_o must_v always_o look_v that_o the_o cause_n be_v good_a and_o then_o suffer_v willing_o this_o be_v a_o necessary_a rule_n for_o we_o must_v suffer_v affliction_n either_o public_o or_o private_o if_o we_o will_v live_v godly_a in_o christ_n jesus_n now_o it_o be_v not_o the_o punishment_n but_o the_o cause_n that_o make_v a_o martyr_n and_o to_o this_o purpose_n peter_n 15._o say_v let_v none_o of_o you_o suffer_v as_o a_o murderer_n a_o thief_n or_o a_o busybody_n but_o if_o any_o man_n suffer_v as_o a_o christian_a let_v he_o not_o be_v ashamed_a but_o glorify_v god_n in_o this_o behalf_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v be_v sure_a the_o cause_n be_v good_a yea_o this_o we_o must_v look_v unto_o in_o our_o particular_a private_a cross_n verse_n 11._o bless_a be_v you_o when_o man_n revile_v you_o and_o
among_o they_o both_o for_o doctrine_n and_o manner_n for_o though_o a_o people_n do_v what_o in_o they_o lie_v to_o cut_v off_o themselves_o from_o god_n yet_o till_o god_n cut_v they_o off_o from_o he_o they_o cease_v not_o to_o be_v his_o people_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v they_o to_o be_v no_o people_n of_o god_n till_o we_o see_v that_o god_n have_v cut_v they_o off_o and_o to_o apply_v this_o to_o our_o own_o church_n put_v case_n we_o have_v forsake_v god_n and_o have_v among_o we_o all_o those_o abuse_n which_o some_o will_v fasten_v upon_o we_o as_o make_v we_o to_o be_v no_o church_n bâ—â—â—nists_n yet_o this_o prove_v we_o not_o to_o be_v no_o church_n neither_o ought_v we_o for_o all_o this_o to_o be_v so_o repute_v for_o though_o we_o have_v deserve_v indeed_o that_o god_n shall_v cut_v we_o off_o yet_o see_v he_o vouchsafe_v unto_o we_o the_o doctrine_n of_o life_n and_o the_o pledge_n of_o salvation_n it_o can_v true_o be_v say_v that_o we_o be_v no_o church_n if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o by_o this_o reason_n we_o will_v make_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o be_v god_n church_n because_o they_o have_v some_o sign_n of_o god_n favour_n as_o baptism_n and_o the_o word_n though_o grievous_o corrupt_v ans._n though_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o god_n have_v his_o company_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o popery_n yet_o if_o we_o understand_v by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n a_o company_n of_o man_n who_o profess_v and_o hold_v the_o pope_n for_o their_o head_n and_o embrace_v the_o doctrine_n establish_v church_n by_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n than_o i_o say_v they_o be_v no_o church_n for_o christ_n have_v cut_v they_o off_o and_o give_v they_o a_o bill_n of_o divorcement_n in_o his_o holy_a word_n revel_v 18._o 4._o come_v out_o of_o she_o my_o people_n hence_o also_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o carry_v a_o charitable_a opinion_n of_o such_o particular_a impenitent_a person_n as_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n without_o remorse_n for_o though_o they_o for_o their_o part_n have_v forsake_v god_n yet_o we_o know_v not_o whether_o god_n have_v forsake_v they_o he_o may_v in_o mercy_n call_v they_o to_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o rash_o give_v sentence_n of_o judgement_n against_o they_o quest._n but_o what_o if_o a_o man_n give_v himself_o to_o the_o devil_n by_o covenant_n as_o many_o have_v do_v and_o do_v daily_a may_v we_o not_o then_o give_v sentence_n against_o they_o or_o they_o against_o themselves_o ans._n no_o very_o for_o though_o this_o case_n be_v most_o fearful_a yet_o they_o have_v not_o absolute_a power_n over_o themselves_o manasses_n 12._o king_n of_o juda_n have_v most_o wicked_o forsake_v god_n and_o bind_v himself_o in_o league_n to_o the_o devil_n but_o yet_o when_o he_o humble_v convert_v he_o when_o he_o go_v to_o persecute_v this_o must_v not_o embolden_v any_o to_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n for_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o be_v merciful_a unto_o such_o deu._n 29._o 19_o neither_o shall_v thou_o swear_v by_o thy_o head_n this_o be_v the_o last_o form_n of_o 36._o swear_v forbid_v by_o christ_n the_o reason_n because_o thou_o can_v not_o make_v one_o hair_n white_a or_o black_a that_o be_v thou_o shall_v not_o swear_v by_o thy_o head_n because_o thou_o have_v not_o power_n over_o thy_o own_o head_n thou_o aâ—t_v not_o able_a to_o make_v thy_o head_n nay_o thou_o observe_v the_o honour_n give_v to_o god_n not_o only_o to_o make_v the_o hair_n of_o man_n head_n but_o even_o to_o give_v the_o natural_a colour_n to_o every_o one_o of_o they_o man_n can_v not_o do_v the_o least_o of_o these_o thing_n this_o teach_v we_o first_o that_o there_o be_v a_o particular_a providence_n of_o god_n prove_v whereby_o he_o dispose_v of_o all_o thing_n even_o of_o the_o least_o and_o base_a thing_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n for_o what_o be_v more_o base_a than_o the_o hair_n of_o a_o man_n head_n and_o what_o be_v less_o to_o be_v regard_v then_o the_o colour_n thereof_o and_o yet_o the_o lord_n providence_n reach_v hereunto_o this_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o endless_a comfort_n to_o god_n child_n for_o when_o we_o be_v once_o persuade_v of_o the_o particular_a providence_n of_o god_n over_o so_o base_a and_o light_a thing_n we_o shall_v easy_o be_v resolve_v that_o all_o thing_n which_o befall_v we_o in_o this_o life_n whether_o in_o prosperity_n or_o adversity_n come_v by_o god_n special_a providence_n which_o will_v move_v we_o to_o a_o patient_a bear_n of_o all_o misery_n and_o to_o contentment_n in_o every_o estate_n because_o it_o be_v the_o creature_n no_o not_o over_o creature_n the_o hair_n of_o his_o head_n then_o doubtless_o he_o may_v not_o lawful_o swear_v by_o any_o creature_n though_o he_o have_v relation_n to_o god_n therein_o for_o if_o he_o may_v lawful_o swear_v by_o a_o creature_n it_o be_v because_o he_o may_v present_v that_o creature_n unto_o god_n as_o a_o pledge_n of_o his_o presence_n wherein_o he_o desire_v god_n ashamed_a of_o second_o the_o paint_n of_o 2_o face_n and_o colour_v of_o the_o hair_n be_v another_o abuse_n of_o god_n name_n set_v therein_o this_o practice_n be_v abhor_v of_o the_o heathen_a who_o in_o their_o write_n 12._o have_v brand_v poppaea_n nero_n wife_n because_o she_o use_v a_o ointment_n make_v of_o ass_n milk_n to_o make_v her_o face_n fair_a and_o bright_a what_o then_o shall_v we_o say_v of_o our_o lady_n and_o gentlewoman_n who_o paint_v their_o face_n with_o spanish_a white_a and_o colour_v their_o hair_n these_o doubtless_o believe_v not_o god_n word_n which_o use_n of_o they_o continue_v no_o more_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o we_o both_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n with_o the_o faculty_n power_n and_o grace_n thereof_o for_o â—_o what_o settle_v our_o heart_n distrust_n in_o all_o estate_n in_o affliction_n temptation_n and_o death_n itself_o namely_o on_o the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n by_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n look_v to_o the_o prayer_n of_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n and_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o make_v this_o their_o rock_n and_o anchor_n of_o stay_n in_o all_o distress_n dan._n 9_o 18_o 19_o o_o lord_n hear_v and_o behold_v not_o for_o our_o own_o righteousness_n but_o for_o thy_o great_a tender_a mercy_n defer_v not_o for_o thy_o own_o sake_n oh_o my_o god_n this_o we_o must_v observe_v to_o arm_v we_o against_o the_o damnable_a doctrine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n for_o they_o will_v grant_v that_o in_o his_o when_o as_o we_o must_v every_o day_n ask_v mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n for_o to_o ask_v mercy_n and_o to_o plead_v merit_n be_v contrary_n now_o by_o our_o daily_a sin_n we_o add_v debt_n to_o debt_n and_o so_o must_v still_o plead_v mercy_n and_o not_o merit_n even_o after_o we_o be_v convert_v and_o sanctify_v ever_o praise_v god_n that_o have_v deliver_v we_o from_o the_o slavish_a bondage_n of_o that_o proud_a synagogue_n three_o here_o we_o see_v what_o we_o must_v do_v in_o respect_n of_o our_o daily_a sin_n humiliation_n whereunto_o we_o fall_v we_o must_v not_o lie_v in_o they_o but_o renew_v our-estate_n by_o true_a humiliation_n and_o repentance_n also_o if_o thou_o be_v cross_v in_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n the_o way_n of_o comfort_n and_o deliverance_n be_v to_o be_v learn_v here_o for_o as_o thou_o do_v daily_o ask_v bread_n so_o thou_o must_v ask_v forgiveness_n for_o thy_o sin_n and_o when_o they_o be_v pardon_v thou_o have_v title_n and_o interest_n to_o all_o god_n blessing_n now_o this_o daily_a humiliation_n stand_v in_o three_o thing_n 1._o in_o examination_n of_o ourselves_o for_o our_o debt_n unto_o god_n by_o sin_n 2._o in_o confess_v our_o debt_n unto_o our_o creditor_n yield_v ourselves_o into_o his_o hand_n 3._o in_o humble_v ourselves_o unto_o he_o crave_v pardon_n and_o remission_n earnest_o for_o christ_n sake_n as_o for_o life_n and_o death_n herein_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v precedent_n unto_o we_o psal._n 32._o 5_o 6._o david_n in_o great_a distress_n find_v no_o release_n while_o he_o hold_v his_o tongue_n but_o when_o he_o humble_v himself_o and_o confess_v against_o himself_o than_o he_o find_v mercy_n and_o ease_v whereupon_o he_o profess_v that_o he_o will_v be_v a_o pattern_n to_o every_o godly_a man_n for_o their_o behaviour_n in_o the_o time_n of_o distress_n four_o here_o we_o have_v a_o notable_a remedy_n against_o desparie_n wherewith_o despair_n the_o devil_n assault_v many_o a_o child_n of_o god_n when_o through_o infirmity_n they_o fall_v into_o some_o grievous_a sin_n or_o commit_v the_o same_o sin_n often_o which_o great_o wound_v the_o conscience_n for_o here_o christ_n bid_v we_o ask_v forgiveness_n of_o our_o daily_a sin_n whatsoever_o they_o be_v or_o how_o often_o so_o ever_o commit_v and_o no_o doubt_n he_o that_o bid_v we_o forgive_v our_o brethren_n that_o sin_n of_o remission_n to_o his_o child_n as_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o pray_v unto_o god_n public_o and_o private_o endeavour_v to_o resist_v all_o temptation_n and_o to_o glorify_v god_n by_o new_a obedience_n for_o it_o be_v gross_a hypocrisy_n to_o ask_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o still_o to_o live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o last_o here_o we_o see_v we_o must_v pray_v not_o only_o for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o own_o other_o sin_n but_o of_o our_o brethren_n also_o forgive_v we_o whereby_o christ_n will_v teach_v we_o to_o be_v careful_a of_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o brethren_n and_o neighbour_n the_o good_a estate_n of_o their_o soul_n shall_v be_v dear_a and_o precious_a unto_o we_o and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o happy_a will_v it_o be_v with_o the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o alas_o man_n be_v so_o far_o from_o care_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o neighbour_n that_o man_n of_o the_o same_o family_n be_v careless_a of_o one_o a_o other_o soul_n master_n regard_v not_o their_o servant_n nor_o parent_n their_o child_n indeed_o they_o will_v provide_v for_o their_o body_n and_o outward_a state_n but_o for_o their_o soul_n they_o have_v no_o care_n wherein_o they_o bewray_v themselves_o to_o be_v cruel_a and_o merciless_a have_v more_o care_n of_o their_o hog_n and_o bruit_n beast_n then_o of_o their_o child_n and_o servant_n propound_v as_o a_o condition_n of_o the_o former_a petition_n and_o they_o include_v a_o reason_n thereof_o as_o luk._n 11._o 4._o forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n for_o even_o we_o forgive_v every_o man_n that_o be_v indebt_v unto_o us._n and_o this_o christ_n add_v for_o weighty_a cause_n even_o to_o cross_v the_o fraud_n and_o hypocrisy_n of_o our_o corrupt_a heart_n who_o will_v have_v forgiveness_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o will_v not_o forgive_v our_o brethren_n nor_o yet_o leave_v off_o the_o practice_n of_o sin_n ourselves_o but_o this_o condition_n import_v that_o we_o must_v exercise_v mercy_n towards_o our_o brethren_n and_o so_o break_v off_o the_o course_n of_o our_o sin_n if_o we_o look_v for_o mercy_n at_o god_n hand_n now_o the_o word_n here_o use_v be_v comparative_a betoken_v a_o likelihood_n and_o similitude_n between_o god_n forgive_a and_o we_o which_o must_v be_v right_o understand_v because_o our_o forgiveness_n be_v mingle_v with_o much_o corruption_n through_o want_n against_o the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n as_o in_o some_o it_o will_v not_o then_o fast_v must_v be_v use_v in_o which_o the_o body_n be_v to_o be_v afflict_v and_o the_o soul_n humble_v for_o the_o subdue_a of_o the_o rebellious_a flesh_n but_o yet_o herein_o we_o must_v beware_v that_o we_o destroy_v not_o our_o health_n our_o strength_n or_o our_o constltution_n for_o thus_o we_o neglect_v our_o life_n which_o be_v a_o sin_n of_o murder_n wherein_o though_o few_o yet_o some_o do_v offend_v who_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o soul_n and_o gross_a sin_n otherways_o five_o here_o note_v how_o far_o the_o pharisy_n go_v in_o outward_a humiliation_n duty_n they_o be_v content_a to_o afflict_v their_o body_n even_o to_o the_o disfigure_v of_o their_o complexion_n but_o yet_o they_o will_v not_o repent_v and_o leave_v their_o sin_n no_o though_o joh._n baptist_n &_o christ_n preach_v repentance_n unto_o they_o wherein_o behold_v the_o property_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n in_o god_n service_n if_o outward_a action_n and_o bodily_a exercise_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n we_o can_v be_v content_a to_o bestow_v much_o cost_n to_o take_v great_a pain_n and_o to_o endure_v some_o affliction_n but_o yet_o still_o we_o desire_v to_o live_v in_o our_o sin_n this_o be_v evident_a in_o popery_n for_o who_o be_v more_o austere_a to_o their_o own_o body_n in_o watch_n wander_v in_o whip_v themselves_o fast_v etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o where_o be_v more_o abominable_a filthiness_n then_o among_o they_o &_o this_o make_v that_o religion_n so_o embrace_v because_o in_o dispense_n with_o sin_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o these_o bodily_a action_n it_o fit_v so_o well_o to_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n wherefore_o let_v we_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o our_o corruption_n &_o though_o we_o must_v not_o neglect_v the_o humble_v of_o the_o body_n upon_o just_a occasion_n yet_o let_v we_o principal_o look_v to_o the_o mortify_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o heart_n vers_fw-la 17._o but_o when_o thou_o fast_o anoint_v thy_o head_n and_o wash_v thy_o face_n 18._o that_o thou_o seem_v not_o unto_o cheerfulness_n use_v to_o anoint_v their_o head_n with_o sweet_a ointment_n and_o to_o wash_v their_o face_n as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o naomies_n command_n to_o 3_o ruth_n &_o by_o 10_o david_n practice_n when_o he_o perceive_v his_o child_n be_v dead_a &_o will_v testify_v that_o he_o have_v cease_v from_o mourning_n for_o it_o as_o also_o by_o the_o speech_n of_o christ_n justify_v the_o
