adam_n view_n to_o whatever_o part_n of_o the_o garden_n he_o move_v and_o by_o so_o do_v must_v constant_o or_o at_o least_o frequent_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o tenure_n viz._n that_o he_o hold_v it_o of_o he_o who_o have_v settle_v he_o in_o the_o possession_n and_o use_v of_o all_o the_o rest_n so_o that_o as_o the_o law_n be_v positive_a if_o we_o only_o look_v upon_o the_o express_a word_n of_o it_o so_o it_o be_v moral_a if_o we_o consider_v what_o be_v imply_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o as_o the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a transgression_n of_o the_o law_n be_v the_o eat_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n so_o the_o couch_a immorality_n of_o such_o transgression_n be_v a_o usurpation_n upon_o god_n prerogative_n in_o this_o low_a world_n and_o a_o encroachment_n upon_o the_o reserve_a right_n and_o demean_n of_o the_o supreme_a lord_n the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n then_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n command_n but_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o imply_v law_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o his_o natural_a and_o supreme_a right_n the_o first_o be_v a_o sin_n because_o it_o do_v what_o god_n have_v express_o forbid_v the_o last_o be_v implicit_o forbid_v because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v a_o sin_n though_o god_n do_v not_o express_o forbid_v it_o the_o first_o be_v therefore_o only_o unlawful_a because_o forbid_a the_o last_o be_v unlawful_a in_o itself_o to_o sum_v up_o all_o in_o a_o few_o word_n though_o the_o designation_n of_o the_o particular_a thing_n viz._n the_o tree_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o garden_n be_v arbitrary_a and_o therefore_o positive_a yet_o the_o designation_n of_o something_o be_v as_o just_a and_o wise_a so_o i_o may_v add_v moral_a and_o necessary_a too_o at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v so_o that_o god_n supreme_a right_a aught_o to_o be_v assert_v and_o own_a for_o so_o far_o forth_o the_o prohibition_n give_v to_o man_n of_o eat_v of_o the_o fruit_n of_o any_o tree_n mark_v out_o or_o of_o meddle_v with_o any_o thing_n else_o be_v ground_v upon_o the_o antecedent_n and_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n that_o be_v of_o morality_n and_o therefore_o though_o the_o express_a prohibition_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o positive_a yet_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o prohibition_n be_v at_o least_o so_o far_o moral_a as_o it_o be_v so_o that_o man_n by_o some_o mean_n or_o other_o shall_v acknowledge_v god_n to_o be_v his_o supreme_a lord_n and_o that_o he_o receive_v from_o he_o whatsoever_o he_o enjoy_v and_o that_o if_o god_n do_v express_o appoint_v the_o way_n and_o mean_n of_o his_o so_o do_v he_o ought_v to_o do_v it_o by_o the_o way_n and_o means_n so_o appoint_v and_o i_o therefore_o say_v express_o because_o so_o far_o as_o the_o word_n of_o the_o law_n under_o our_o present_a consideration_n do_v go_v it_o be_v notorious_a that_o what_o be_v express_o prohibit_v by_o it_o be_v only_o arbitrary_a and_o that_o the_o sin_n express_o prohibit_v by_o the_o law_n may_v therefore_o true_o be_v esteem_v a_o lesser_a sin_n because_o it_o be_v only_o a_o sin_n against_o a_o positive_a law_n for_o such_o a_o sin_n be_v a_o sin_n only_o against_o god_n authority_n whereas_o a_o sin_n that_o contain_v a_o natural_a immorality_n in_o it_o if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v be_v a_o sin_n both_o against_o god_n authority_n and_o against_o his_o purity_n and_o holiness_n too_o 2._o that_o the_o express_a penalty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v only_o a_o punishment_n threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a prohibition_n of_o the_o law_n for_o it_o do_v not_o look_v like_o justice_n to_o assign_v a_o express_a punishment_n in_o the_o law_n for_o the_o transgression_n of_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o express_o contain_v in_o the_o law_n 3._o such_o punishment_n so_o threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n be_v express_v absolute_a and_o peremptory_a adam_n then_o do_v therefore_o fatal_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n because_o he_o sin_v against_o a_o express_a prohibition_n which_o be_v ratify_v by_o a_o absolute_a peremptory_a and_o express_v threat_n for_o god_n may_v therefore_o be_v think_v to_o be_v oblige_v by_o his_o truth_n to_o punish_v adam_n transgression_n according_a to_o the_o express_a threat_n of_o the_o law_n because_o he_o have_v pass_v his_o more_o solemn_a word_n that_o he_o will_v do_v so_o and_o as_o he_o be_v oblige_v by_o his_o truth_n to_o punish_v it_o as_o the_o law_n have_v threaten_v so_o he_o be_v oblige_v to_o punish_v it_o because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n for_o so_o undoubted_o be_v the_o transgression_n of_o any_o of_o god_n law_n from_o hence_o it_o may_v be_v conclude_v that_o we_o all_o die_v a_o temporal_a death_n for_o adam_n sin_n for_o as_o we_o be_v in_o the_o loin_n of_o he_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o transgression_n so_o god_n have_v not_o by_o any_o other_o law_n assign_v a_o universal_a mortality_n as_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o speak_v the_o scripture_n in_o adam_n all_o die_v 4._o as_o the_o moral_a law_n couch_v in_o the_o positive_a law_n be_v not_o express_v so_o neither_o be_v there_o any_o express_a punishment_n threaten_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o such_o couch_v law_n for_o while_o man_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o innocence_n as_o there_o be_v no_o need_n that_o god_n shall_v prescribe_v he_o any_o express_a law_n to_o guide_v he_o in_o such_o thing_n which_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n good_a because_o the_o dictate_v of_o his_o own_o reason_n be_v of_o themselves_o sufficient_a for_o such_o his_o guidance_n for_o moral_a goodness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o dictate_v of_o right_a reason_n employ_v about_o the_o action_n of_o rational_a creature_n so_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n there_o be_v no_o occasion_n to_o threaten_v he_o in_o that_o case_n with_o any_o express_a penalty_n because_o the_o threaten_n of_o a_o express_a penalty_n antecedent_n to_o the_o commission_n of_o the_o crime_n can_v only_o be_v proper_a there_o where_o there_o be_v a_o express_a law_n command_v a_o duty_n whereas_o man_n have_v never_o by_o his_o reason_n know_v that_o it_o have_v be_v a_o sin_n to_o eat_v of_o any_o fruit_n which_o kind_o offer_v itself_o to_o his_o view_n and_o natural_a inclination_n if_o such_o fruit_n have_v not_o be_v forbid_v by_o some_o express_a law_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_a it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o penalty_n of_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_v too_o 5._o as_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o moral_a duty_n which_o be_v only_o imply_v in_o the_o law_n be_v that_o duty_n suppose_v to_o be_v express_a law_n be_v great_a than_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o express_a but_o positive_a law_n so_o be_v there_o a_o punishment_n to_o be_v express_o assign_v to_o such_o sin_n it_o must_v in_o justice_n be_v great_a than_o the_o punishment_n assign_v to_o the_o less_o sin_n that_o be_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o positive_a law_n the_o punishment_n therefore_o assign_v by_o the_o express_a law_n to_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v only_a death_n and_o that_o too_o as_o appear_v from_o the_o nineteenth_o verse_n of_o the_o three_o chapter_n of_o genesis_n a_o temporal_a death_n our_o reason_n and_o that_o natural_a sense_n we_o have_v of_o the_o proportion_n of_o justice_n will_v assure_v we_o that_o the_o law_n which_o forbid_v a_o great_a sin_n than_o this_o law_n do_v must_v in_o reason_n and_o equity_n assign_v a_o heavy_a punishment_n to_o such_o great_a sin_n 6._o such_o heavy_a punishment_n must_v suppose_v a_o resurrection_n for_o a_o great_a punishment_n than_o death_n can_v therefore_o be_v inflict_v upon_o a_o dead_a man_n without_o a_o resurrection_n because_o no_o punishment_n at_o all_o can_v be_v so_o inflict_v upon_o he_o for_o where_o there_o be_v no_o sensation_n
and_o his_o law_n he_o will_v be_v unwise_a also_o and_o therefore_o 6._o last_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o that_o description_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o of_o it_o in_o god_n word_n do_v full_o assure_v we_o that_o he_o have_v no_o such_o design_n in_o his_o counsel_n as_o to_o throw_v away_o his_o law_n to_o gratify_v his_o enemy_n with_o impunity_n from_o all_o which_o reason_n and_o as_o we_o do_v believe_v from_o each_o of_o they_o in_o particular_a it_o seem_v satisfactory_o evident_a that_o a_o gospel-pardon_a of_o sin_n be_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o god_n do_v in_o the_o gospel_n promise_v pardon_n of_o sin_n there_o must_v be_v some_o previous_a condition_n that_o must_v be_v observe_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n and_o what_o share_v our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o performance_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o such_o condition_n we_o shall_v learn_v hereafter_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o we_o dismiss_v this_o chapter_n we_o must_v not_o dissemble_v that_o it_o may_v be_v surmise_v and_o therefore_o also_o that_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o alsolute_a gospel-pardon_a that_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o arbitrary_a gospel-pardon_a and_o that_o there_o be_v some_o expression_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o lean_a that_o way_n and_o may_v at_o least_o incline_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n but_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o pardon_n can_v come_v from_o god_n but_o what_o be_v just_a and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o arbitrary_a justice_n be_v only_o one_o branch_n of_o arbitrary_a power_n and_o therefore_o be_v in_o reality_n no_o justice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o be_v only_o a_o resolute_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n without_o any_o reason_n for_o such_o determination_n therefore_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v belong_v to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o action_n be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o his_o holiness_n that_o be_v by_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n and_o he_o only_o therefore_o will_v what_o he_o please_v because_o he_o neither_o do_v not_o can_n please_v to_o will_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v just_o chap._n iii_o a_o gospel-salvation_n contain_v in_o it_o 1._o pardon_v of_o sin_n 2._o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n to_o these_o two_o other_o thing_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n negative_o the_o several_a way_n how_o such_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v from_o whence_o a_o inference_n of_o the_o doctrine_n assert_v with_o some_o practical_a inference_n have_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n make_v it_o good_a that_o misery_n and_o death_n that_o be_v in_o one_o word_n that_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o second_o that_o the_o gospel_n itself_o hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o either_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n our_o next_o proposition_n must_v be_v that_o because_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o very_a case_n be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n will_n and_o because_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o gospel_n reveal_v be_v the_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o therefore_o man_n sin_n be_v to_o be_v pardon_v though_o not_o by_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n and_o then_o because_o it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v pardon_v some_o way_n or_o other_o it_o will_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o that_o way_n be_v for_o by_o such_o enquiry_n it_o may_v perhaps_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o gospel-truth_n and_o that_o too_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o jesus_n christ_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o here_o because_o the_o gospel_n promise_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o do_v from_o thence_o in_o the_o first_o place_n conclude_v that_o the_o pardon_n must_v be_v conditional_a so_o we_o must_v in_o the_o next_o place_n inquire_v what_o that_o condition_n or_o what_o those_o condition_n be_v upon_o which_o this_o pardon_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v now_o if_o in_o order_n to_o our_o more_o rational_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o this_o enquiry_n we_o do_v first_o look_v into_o the_o gospel_n there_o to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o a_o gospel-salvation_n mean_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o learn_v that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o second_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o two_o thing_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o this_o matter_n two_o other_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o our_o lose_a holiness_n for_o as_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o second_o proposition_n that_o though_o the_o gospel_n do_v allow_v a_o pardon_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o allow_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o therefore_o something_o will_v be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n so_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o first_o proposition_n that_o because_o punishment_n for_o sin_n be_v necessary_a therefore_o some_o punishment_n be_v that_o what_o it_o will_v at_o present_a must_v be_v suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o then_o if_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o discourse_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o consideration_n of_o any_o such_o punishment_n so_o suffer_v the_o gospel-pardon_a of_o our_o sin_n do_v afterward_o ensue_v then_o such_o pardon_n may_v be_v so_o far_o ascribe_v to_o such_o punishment_n as_o that_o our_o gild_n and_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o such_o our_o gild_n may_v be_v true_o esteem_v to_o be_v expiate_v by_o it_o now_o in_o order_n to_o find_v out_o what_o punishment_n it_o be_v that_o can_v make_v such_o a_o expiation_n we_o shall_v first_o inquire_v what_o punishment_n can_v do_v it_o and_o because_o repentance_n do_v not_o so_o whole_o consist_v in_o action_n but_o that_o it_o must_v have_v something_o of_o suffer_v mix_v with_o it_o therefore_o in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o design_n let_v our_o first_o negative_a proposition_n be_v this_o 1._o that_o our_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v out_o a_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o gospel-condition_n require_v of_o we_o without_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel-expiation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n make_v out_o that_o expiation_n for_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n necessary_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n repentance_n so_o exact_a and_o complete_a as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o all_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v and_o so_o after_o all_o he_o must_v remain_v a_o sinner_n as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v i_o say_v beside_o that_o his_o very_a manner_n of_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n be_v a_o demonstrative_a proof_n that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o we_o may_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o then_o expiate_v and_o so_o neither_o pardon_v when_o god_n himself_o lay_v on_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o when_o god_n give_v his_o law_n to_o mankind_n in_o their_o universal_a father_n and_o representative_a adam_n we_o know_v that_o he_o ratify_v such_o law_n by_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n and_o we_o know_v also_o that_o every_o man_n let_v he_o be_v as_o pemtent_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v do_v still_o suffer_v that_o penalty_n and_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o also_o know_v that_o for_o that_o reason_n no_o man_n repentance_n can_v so_o christian_a religion_n for_o to_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o such_o a_o man_n as_o other_o man_n be_v but_o only_o conceive_v in_o a_o different_a and_o therefore_o more_o wonderful_a manner_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o die_v patient_o though_o wrongful_o only_o that_o he_o may_v give_v we_o a_o example_n of_o a_o exact_a patience_n and_o of_o a_o entire_a submission_n to_o god_n providence_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o be_v slay_v a_o sacrifice_n only_o to_o confirm_v the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o design_n in_o the_o scripture_n exact_o be_v direct_v to_o and_o do_v centre_n in_o the_o saviour_n and_o that_o redemption_n which_o he_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n by_o his_o death_n and_o merit_n have_v therefore_o thus_o in_o short_a take_v notice_n of_o what_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o concern_v the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o sussering_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o 1._o that_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o any_o mean_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o 2._o that_o our_o saviour_n be_v god_n incarnate_a or_o god_n and_o man_n unite_v in_o one_o person_n we_o do_v in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o main_a design_n lay_v it_o down_o in_o the_o 3._o three_o place_n that_o the_o way_n and_o method_n of_o man_n salvation_n as_o it_o be_v express_o and_o frequent_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v by_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n be_v agreeable_a to_o right_a reason_n and_o exact_o congruous_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o truth_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n and_o in_o order_n to_o our_o make_v this_o plain_a and_o clear_a we_o take_v notice_n 1._o that_o that_o law_n about_o the_o transgression_n of_o which_o and_o the_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o such_o transgression_n the_o gospel-forgiveness_n be_v only_o concern_v be_v give_v to_o man._n for_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o no_o account_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o breach_n of_o any_o other_o law_n but_o only_o of_o that_o law_n which_o god_n have_v prescribe_v to_o mankind_n and_o therefore_o though_o in_o the_o scripture_n we_o have_v several_a broad_a hint_n of_o the_o fall_n of_o the_o angel_n and_o though_o our_o reason_n tell_v we_o that_o that_o which_o put_v they_o under_o the_o displeasure_n of_o god_n must_v needs_o be_v sin_n in_o the_o general_a yet_o we_o be_v therefore_o ignorant_a what_o their_o sin_n be_v because_o we_o be_v ignorant_a what_o that_o law_n be_v against_o which_o they_o sin_v 2._o we_o take_v notice_n that_o as_o that_o law_n about_o which_o alone_o the_o gospel-forgiveness_n be_v concern_v be_v the_o law_n give_v by_o god_n to_o man_n so_o the_o gospel_n take_v no_o other_o or_o far_a notice_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o that_o law_n than_o as_o that_o law_n be_v break_v by_o man._n from_o whence_o we_o infer_v in_o the_o 3._o three_o place_n that_o that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v against_o those_o who_o transgress_v it_o can_v only_o in_o justice_n belong_v to_o those_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o direct_v for_o they_o can_v never_o transgress_v a_o law_n who_o have_v no_o law_n assign_v they_o and_o they_o can_v never_o be_v just_o punish_v for_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n who_o can_v never_o transgress_v the_o law_n the_o law_n therefore_o about_o which_o alone_o a_o gospel-forgiveness_n be_v concern_v be_v the_o law_n give_v to_o man_n and_o transgress_v by_o man_n man_n alone_o can_v just_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o such_o transgression_n from_o whence_o we_o infer_v in_o the_o 4._o four_o place_n that_o if_o any_o penalty_n can_v ever_o just_o expiate_v that_o gild_n which_o be_v contract_v by_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n that_o penalty_n that_o must_v make_v such_o expiation_n must_v be_v a_o penalty_n lay_v upon_o man._n and_o therefore_o our_o common_a sense_n of_o justice_n will_v not_o allow_v we_o to_o think_v that_o either_o angel_n which_o be_v rank_v above_o mankind_n nor_o beast_n which_o be_v rank_v below_o they_o can_v by_o any_o suffering_n whatsoever_o expiate_v or_o atone_v for_o the_o breach_n of_o such_o law_n which_o be_v give_v by_o god_n to_o man_n do_v so_o far_o forth_o concern_v man_n alone_o and_o though_o we_o have_v before_o make_v it_o out_o that_o neither_o angel_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n nor_o brute_n beast_n on_o the_o other_o can_v expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n as_o both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o be_v creature_n yet_o what_o we_o now_o say_v be_v that_o they_o can_v do_v it_o as_o they_o be_v different_a creature_n for_o it_o seem_v necessary_a and_o that_o
world_n be_v restore_v to_o that_o holiness_n which_o be_v lose_v by_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n and_o because_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v complete_o and_o actual_o justify_v till_o he_o be_v so_o restore_v 2._o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n and_o by_o consequence_n the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n by_o god_n be_v not_o absolute_a but_o conditional_a and_o because_o some_o of_o those_o condition_n upon_o which_o such_o pardon_n do_v depend_v be_v to_o be_v perform_v by_o we_o such_o be_v our_o repentance_n conversion_n and_o the_o like_a and_o because_o last_o our_o condition_n in_o this_o world_n be_v such_o that_o there_o will_v of_o necessity_n be_v require_v time_n for_o our_o performance_n of_o such_o condition_n therefore_o we_o do_v conclude_v that_o as_o our_o saviour_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o such_o condition_n in_o order_n to_o our_o redemption_n so_o have_v he_o also_o purchase_v for_o we_o a_o long_a term_n in_o which_o we_o may_v perform_v such_o condition_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o denunciation_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v and_o in_o strict_a justice_n and_o reason_n the_o punishment_n be_v then_o to_o be_v inflict_v when_o it_o become_v due_a and_o it_o then_o become_v due_a so_o soon_o as_o the_o law_n be_v break_v for_o be_v it_o not_o due_a then_o it_o will_v never_o become_v due_a at_o all_o now_o because_o we_o find_v and_o that_o too_o by_o experience_n that_o notwithstanding_o not_o only_a adam_n sin_n but_o our_o own_o sin_n too_o we_o do_v not_o present_o die_v but_o that_o god_n wait_v our_o return_n that_o he_o may_v be_v gracious_a to_o we_o and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o such_o his_o patience_n and_o forbearance_n be_v therefore_o extend_v to_o we_o that_o we_o may_v by_o our_o repentance_n qualify_v ourselves_o to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o that_o expiation_n which_o be_v make_v by_o our_o saviour_n for_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o therefore_o we_o do_v at_o last_o conclude_v that_o the_o grant_v of_o a_o space_n for_o repentance_n be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o it_o will_v have_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o our_o saviour_n to_o have_v make_v no_o purchase_n for_o we_o at_o all_o if_o such_o his_o purchase_n have_v be_v clog_v with_o such_o condition_n on_o our_o part_n which_o it_o be_v utter_o impossible_a for_o we_o to_o perform_v and_o it_o have_v be_v utter_o impossible_a for_o we_o to_o make_v out_o our_o repentance_n and_o amendment_n if_o we_o have_v not_o be_v allow_v a_o competent_a time_n to_o make_v they_o out_o in_o and_o what_o we_o have_v say_v concern_v god_n allow_v of_o a_o competent_a time_n in_o which_o sinner_n may_v perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n purchase_v by_o the_o saviour_n that_o we_o say_v also_o concern_v the_o mean_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o such_o their_o performance_n such_o be_v his_o word_n the_o succour_n and_o assistance_n of_o his_o spirit_n his_o sacrament_n and_o whatever_o else_o do_v usual_o come_v under_o the_o title_n of_o mean_n of_o grace_n for_o it_o be_v not_o conceivable_a that_o our_o saviour_n shall_v purchase_v for_o we_o the_o end_n and_o yet_o leave_v we_o without_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o bring_n about_o such_o end_n but_o yet_o because_o the_o mean_n to_o enable_v we_o to_o perform_v the_o condition_n require_v of_o we_o in_o order_n to_o our_o salvation_n be_v not_o nor_o indeed_o can_v possible_o be_v that_o very_a salvation_n for_o which_o they_o be_v design_v or_o employ_v as_o mean_n and_o because_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n we_o be_v require_v and_o it_o be_v necessary_a in_o itself_o that_o we_o always_o have_v and_o also_o employ_v such_o mean_n to_o the_o purpose_n of_o our_o justification_n and_o last_o because_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v necessary_a that_o it_o be_v neither_o proper_a no_o nor_o wise_a to_o employ_v any_o mean_n for_o any_o end_n already_o attain_v therefore_o what_o we_o observe_v under_o our_o last_o head_n will_v still_o remain_v true_a and_o that_o be_v that_o no_o man_n be_v actual_o justify_v in_o this_o life_n 3._o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v we_o take_v notice_n that_o though_o affliction_n in_o this_o life_n be_v undoubted_o the_o execution_n of_o justice_n yet_o which_o be_v owe_v to_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n there_o be_v always_o couch_v in_o such_o affliction_n least_o to_o our_o restraint_n for_o have_v we_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n according_a to_o the_o law_n we_o have_v be_v both_o immediate_o punish_v for_o our_o sin_n past_a and_o have_v by_o the_o same_o mean_v be_v prevent_v from_o ever_o sin_v for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o a_o death_n without_o a_o resurrection_n have_v prove_v a_o sure_a and_o everlasting_a prevention_n but_o as_o we_o have_v see_v our_o life_n be_v continue_v in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n though_o affliction_n be_v lay_v upon_o we_o during_o the_o reprieve_n and_o though_o such_o affliction_n do_v confess_o come_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o justice_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o lay_v on_o without_o a_o design_n and_o mixture_n of_o mercy_n and_o therefore_o as_o they_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n past_a so_o they_o be_v design_v as_o mean_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o by_o the_o wise_a counsel_n of_o our_o merciful_a and_o gracious_a god_n be_v employ_v chief_o indeed_o for_o our_o future_a reformation_n but_o at_o least_o for_o our_o future_a restraint_n and_o so_o be_v one_o and_o a_o great_a branch_n too_o of_o what_o we_o call_v restrain_v grace_n as_o therefore_o we_o take_v notice_n under_o our_o last_o head_n that_o the_o reprieve_n of_o man_n from_o the_o immediate_a execution_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n be_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o that_o so_o man_n life_n come_v to_o be_v continue_v notwithstanding_o his_o transgression_n so_o under_o this_o head_n we_o may_v observe_v that_o though_o sin_n during_o such_o continuance_n of_o life_n can_v be_v restrain_v by_o death_n yet_o the_o just_a merciful_a and_o alwise_a god_n have_v not_o even_o in_o such_o circumstance_n leave_v it_o without_o all_o restraint_n but_o have_v by_o affliction_n fit_v such_o a_o curb_n for_o it_o which_o notwithstanding_o the_o saviour_n purchase_n be_v a_o irrefragable_a proof_n of_o his_o justice_n but_o though_o it_o be_v so_o do_v in_o no_o wise_n encroach_v upon_o such_o purchase_n but_o rather_o promote_v the_o design_n of_o it_o for_o a_o life_n continue_v in_o order_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o condition_n by_o the_o performance_n of_o which_o man_n in_o and_z through_o his_o saviour_n may_v obtain_v salvation_n a_o life_n i_o say_v continue_v to_o such_o a_o purpose_n be_v more_o likely_a to_o answer_v to_o such_o purpose_n if_o its_o attempt_n after_o sinful_a commission_n be_v restrain_v than_o it_o can_v be_v be_v such_o attempt_v leave_v free_a and_o at_o large_a for_o which_o reason_n such_o restraint_n though_o it_o be_v cause_v by_o affliction_n do_v rather_o fall_v in_o with_o than_o control_v the_o design_n of_o our_o saviour_n purchase_n and_o though_o it_o be_v confess_v that_o such_o restraint_n be_v not_o so_o efficacious_a for_o the_o prevention_n of_o future_a sin_n as_o death_n without_o any_o reprieve_n have_v be_v for_o in_o the_o last_o case_n the_o prevention_n have_v be_v necessary_a whereas_o in_o the_o first_o it_o be_v at_o the_o most_o but_o possible_a yet_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v also_o that_o it_o be_v most_o wise_o suit_v to_o the_o circumstance_n of_o those_o about_o who_o it_o be_v employ_v and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o all_o restraint_n be_v design_v either_o to_o keep_v or_o to_o make_v they_o good_a it_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o either_o that_o it_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o choice_n whether_o they_o will_v improve_v it_o to_o either_o or_o both_o design_n or_o no_o for_o there_o can_v be_v no_o goodness_n at_o all_o without_o such_o freedom_n by_o all_o which_o we_o may_v at_o last_o understand_v that_o though_o affliction_n as_o well_o as_o death_n be_v the_o wage_n of_o sin_n and_o though_o god_n do_v not_o let_v the_o reprieve_a life_n of_o a_o sinner_n pass_v on_o without_o the_o token_n of_o his_o displeasure_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n without_o affliction_n yet_o that_o it_o be_v owe_v to_o our_o saviour_n that_o all_o such_o affliction_n be_v employ_v
and_o because_o none_o but_o such_o who_o do_v so_o shall_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n therefore_o it_o be_v no_o objection_n against_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n to_o say_v that_o his_o temporal_a death_n can_v expiate_v a_o eternal_a punishment_n because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o any_o such_o purpose_n and_o he_o do_v not_o do_v so_o because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o alone_o shall_v suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n that_o be_v he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o shall_v refuse_v and_o reject_v the_o only_a mean_n of_o salvation_n which_o he_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n by_o his_o death_n much_o more_o may_v be_v offer_v upon_o this_o occasion_n but_o this_o be_v sufficient_a in_o this_o place_n i_o shall_v therefore_o here_o add_v no_o more_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n i_o do_v not_o question_v but_o that_o the_o value_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n pardon_n and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o right_a reason_n and_o to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n for_o because_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n in_o the_o party_n forgive_v and_o because_o the_o lay_v the_o punishment_n which_o he_o deserve_v upon_o another_o be_v in_o effect_n a_o remission_n of_o that_o punishment_n to_o he_o and_o because_o last_o a_o remission_n of_o punishment_n to_o the_o party_n which_o deserve_v such_o punishment_n may_v be_v true_o account_v a_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n for_o pardon_v of_o sin_n to_o any_o party_n whosoever_o be_v neither_o more_o nor_o less_o than_o the_o release_v or_o free_v he_o from_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o his_o sin_n therefore_o if_o by_o what_o have_v be_v speak_v it_o have_v appear_v that_o the_o punishment_n due_a to_o our_o sin_n be_v without_o any_o injustice_n translate_v upon_o another_o and_o that_o upon_o such_o translation_n it_o can_v just_o be_v exaâ—â—ed_v of_o we_o than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o our_o sin_n be_v pardon_v so_o far_o forth_o the_o pardon_n be_v just_a and_o therefore_o so_o far_o as_o we_o have_v hitherto_o go_v we_o may_v true_o and_o rational_o conclude_v that_o that_o method_n in_o which_o the_o gospel_n discover_v our_o salvation_n to_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v do_v exact_o square_a hitherto_o assert_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o our_o saviour_n sacrifice_n for_o the_o expiation_n and_o pardon_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o bare_a pardon_n of_o sin_n upon_o any_o consideration_n whatsoever_o be_v those_o consideration_n never_o so_o valuable_a yet_o can_v never_o in_o reason_n or_o justice_n make_v out_o a_o gospel-salvation_n and_o therefore_o we_o lay_v it_o down_o at_o the_o beginning_n that_o as_o in_o order_n to_o a_o gospel-salvation_n there_o be_v first_o require_v a_o expiation_n and_o in_o consideration_n of_o such_o expiation_n a_o pardon_n of_o sin_n so_o there_o be_v also_o require_v a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n and_o the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n for_o because_o god_n law_n as_o every_o good_a law_n beside_o do_v consist_v of_o two_o part_n first_o the_o directive_n or_o what_o it_o require_v to_o be_v obey_v and_o second_o the_o vindictive_a or_o what_o upon_o disobedience_n it_o require_v to_o be_v suffer_v and_o because_o sin_n be_v the_o disobedience_n to_o or_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o so_o far_o as_o we_o have_v discourse_v of_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n so_o far_o we_o have_v only_o discourse_v of_o that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o do_v that_o we_o have_v not_o at_o all_o discourse_v of_o that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o upon_o our_o neglect_n to_o follow_v such_o direction_n god_n do_v for_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o forgive_v we_o the_o penalty_n which_o we_o incur_v by_o such_o our_o neglect_n and_o nothing_o more_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o by_o such_o a_o way_n of_o proceed_v all_o care_n of_o the_o directive_n which_o be_v indeed_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o law_n be_v throw_v away_o for_o because_o all_o man_n be_v sinner_n that_o be_v because_o none_o do_v obey_v the_o law_n though_o god_n upon_o valuable_a consideration_n do_v remit_v the_o punishment_n to_o some_o or_o all_o of_o those_o sinner_n yet_o still_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o duty_n enjoin_v by_o the_o law_n remain_v undo_v by_o all_o and_o i_o therefore_o say_v it_o be_v certain_a because_o it_o will_v notorious_o appear_v by_o what_o follow_v that_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v the_o pardon_n of_o the_o therefore_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o hereafter_o can_v never_o be_v sufficient_a for_o our_o obtain_v a_o gospel-salvation_n which_o include_v in_o it_o a_o eternal_a holiness_n and_o a_o eternal_a happiness_n as_o well_o as_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n now_o that_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n can_v neither_o in_o reason_n nor_o justice_n pass_v for_o our_o performance_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n will_v appear_v notorious_a from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o because_o forgiveness_n do_v imply_v in_o the_o very_a notion_n of_o it_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n and_o a_o desert_n of_o punishment_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o no_o man_n can_v be_v true_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o upon_o the_o same_o account_n to_o esteem_v a_o man_n innocent_a and_o yet_o a_o criminal_a must_v needs_o be_v absurd_a because_o it_o be_v a_o contradiction_n and_o then_o because_o in_o contradiction_n only_o one_o part_n can_v be_v true_a therefore_o so_o sure_a as_o we_o be_v that_o he_o who_o be_v true_o forgive_v must_v be_v a_o sinner_n so_o sure_o we_o be_v also_o that_o he_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v true_o suppose_v to_o be_v innocent_a and_o therefore_o when_o god_n forgive_v as_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o reason_n and_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v sin_n and_o be_v so_o express_v in_o general_a in_o the_o scripture_n so_o it_o be_v suppose_v in_o the_o same_o reason_n and_o the_o same_o common_a sense_n that_o he_o do_v forgive_v those_o sin_n to_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n do_v forgive_v we_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v in_o the_o law_n 2._o nor_o can_v we_o be_v so_o second_o because_o shall_v we_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v yet_o we_o can_v not_o by_o so_o do_v ever_o fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n for_o it_o be_v notorious_a in_o itself_o that_o the_o suffering_n what_o the_o law_n threaten_v be_v not_o the_o do_v what_o the_o law_n command_v now_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o that_o punishment_n which_o we_o have_v deserve_v can_v give_v we_o no_o
better_o a_o title_n to_o obedience_n than_o our_o suffering_n such_o punishment_n can_v have_v do_v have_v that_o punishment_n not_o be_v forgive_v and_o it_o look_v absurd_a at_o first_o view_n that_o gild_n shall_v consist_v in_o the_o neglect_n of_o obedience_n and_o that_o punishment_n shall_v be_v the_o desert_n and_o therefore_o in_o justice_n the_o effect_n of_o our_o gild_n and_o yet_o that_o obedience_n shall_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o our_o punishment_n that_o be_v that_o gild_n after_o one_o remove_v shall_v be_v the_o proper_a and_o in_o a_o manner_n natural_a because_o just_a cause_n of_o duty_n but_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o sure_a that_o it_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n because_o we_o be_v tell_v by_o god_n himself_o that_o there_o be_v a_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n which_o shall_v be_v eternal_a which_o yet_o will_v be_v impossible_a if_o the_o suffering_n of_o punishment_n be_v equivalent_a to_o a_o perfect_a obedience_n to_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n which_o because_o for_o the_o reason_n allege_v and_o for_o more_o that_o may_v be_v allege_v it_o can_v be_v therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o such_o punishment_n be_v so_o for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o punishment_n can_v do_v no_o more_o towards_o the_o make_v we_o obedient_a than_o the_o punishment_n itself_o can_v do_v shall_v we_o undergo_v it_o and_o therefore_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o our_o saviour_n have_v suffer_v in_o our_o stead_n do_v not_o of_o itself_o suppose_v we_o to_o have_v fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v imply_v nothing_o more_o in_o it_o than_o our_o freedom_n from_o that_o vengeance_n which_o the_o law_n have_v threaten_v and_o which_o we_o have_v deserve_v by_o our_o transgression_n of_o the_o direction_n of_o it_o and_o so_o do_v only_o free_v we_o from_o the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n but_o do_v not_o for_o that_o reason_n entitle_v we_o to_o those_o reward_n which_o the_o law_n promise_v to_o those_o who_o obey_v its_o direction_n now_o it_o be_v a_o very_a different_a thing_n to_o be_v bare_o free_v from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o be_v entitle_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o law_n because_o the_o case_n may_v real_o so_o be_v put_v as_o that_o a_o man_n may_v obtain_v a_o release_n in_o the_o first_o case_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v entitle_v to_o or_o possess_v the_o promise_n in_o the_o last_o and_o in_o all_o case_n let_v they_o be_v what_o they_o will_v yet_o still_o we_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o first_o can_v only_o in_o reason_n nay_o in_o nature_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n and_o that_o the_o last_o can_v only_o in_o strictness_n of_o law_n belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n and_o therefore_o that_o the_o first_o can_v be_v only_a matter_n of_o favour_n whereas_o the_o last_o may_v be_v matter_n of_o right_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n in_o the_o two_o case_n then_o let_v that_o difference_n be_v lodge_v where_o it_o will_v yet_o we_o be_v from_o thence_o assure_v that_o the_o case_n be_v not_o the_o same_o and_o therefore_o neither_o can_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n in_o our_o stead_n be_v any_o argument_n that_o we_o have_v fulfil_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v affirm_v by_o several_a learned_a man_n that_o we_o be_v sufficient_o entitle_v to_o eternal_a happiness_n by_o the_o bare_a pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o consideration_n of_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n because_o when_o we_o be_v treat_v by_o god_n with_o impunity_n we_o be_v at_o the_o same_o time_n treat_v as_o innocent_n and_o that_o he_o who_o be_v treat_v as_o a_o innocent_a by_o god_n himself_o who_o can_v be_v mistake_v in_o the_o case_n must_v therefore_o needs_o be_v so_o yet_o these_o man_n as_o they_o do_v not_o sufficient_o distinguish_v between_o a_o innocent_a and_o a_o saint_n so_o neither_o do_v they_o between_o impunity_n and_o a_o reward_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n suffering_n be_v meritorious_a of_o a_o reward_n to_o himself_o and_o so_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o yet_o they_o be_v only_o expiatory_a to_o we_o and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n for_o the_o utmost_a design_n the_o natural_a tendency_n and_o the_o only_a business_n of_o a_o expiation_n be_v to_o obtain_v a_o impunity_n for_o such_o who_o have_v deserve_v and_o therefore_o must_v in_o justice_n without_o such_o a_o expiation_n suffer_v punishment_n but_o neither_o scripture_n reason_n or_o justice_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o a_o purchase_n of_o impunity_n from_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o the_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n can_v be_v a_o purchase_n of_o that_o reward_n that_o be_v only_o due_a to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n in_o one_o word_n reward_n and_o punishment_n derive_v not_o only_o from_o different_a but_o from_o contrary_a principle_n and_o impunity_n have_v and_o that_o too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n a_o respect_n or_o relation_n only_o to_o punishment_n but_o none_o at_o all_o to_o reward_v and_o for_o that_o reason_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o impunity_n can_v have_v no_o concern_v with_o reward_n neither_o since_o then_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o pardon_n to_o those_o who_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n it_o be_v absurd_a in_o nature_n and_o reason_n to_o make_v it_o also_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o that_o reward_n which_o as_o it_o suppose_v no_o need_n of_o pardon_n so_o do_v by_o the_o law_n only_o belong_v to_o those_o who_o have_v obey_v the_o law_n so_o that_o a_o expiation_n do_v at_o the_o most_o but_o make_v a_o man_n innocent_a but_o do_v nothing_o to_o make_v he_o a_o saint_n for_o it_o only_o cancel_v his_o neglect_n of_o duty_n but_o do_v not_o do_v that_o duty_n for_o he_o which_o he_o have_v neglect_v by_o all_o which_o it_o appear_v 1._o that_o reward_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n 2._o that_o punishment_n do_v in_o propriety_n and_o justice_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o that_o expiation_n have_v no_o relation_n to_o the_o reward_n of_o obedience_n but_o that_o it_o only_o concern_v that_o punishment_n which_o without_o such_o expiation_n be_v in_o justice_n due_a to_o disobedience_n now_o because_o god_n have_v teach_v we_o not_o only_o that_o our_o sin_n shall_v be_v forgive_v in_o and_o through_o our_o saviour_n but_o that_o also_o in_o and_o through_o the_o same_o saviour_n we_o shall_v obtain_v a_o glorious_a reward_n and_o because_o as_o have_v appear_v in_o general_n reward_n do_v in_o reason_n and_o justice_n as_o proper_o belong_v to_o duty_n and_o obedience_n as_o forgiveness_n do_v to_o expiation_n therefore_o our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v upon_o what_o obedience_n such_o reward_n be_v ground_v for_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o because_o the_o distribution_n of_o such_o reward_n be_v lodge_v in_o god_n hand_n therefore_o the_o reward_n will_v be_v bestow_v just_o and_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a of_o that_o therefore_o we_o be_v far_o assure_v that_o it_o will_v be_v confer_v upon_o duty_n and_o obedience_n and_o indeed_o have_v in_o what_o go_v before_o see_v what_o provision_n god_n have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o order_n to_o the_o possibility_n and_o justice_n of_o man_n salvation_n and_o be_v satisfy_v that_o that_o provision_n which_o he_o have_v make_v for_o that_o purpose_n will_v not_o also_o fulfil_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n it_o must_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o provision_n he_o have_v make_v for_o the_o fulfil_n of_o such_o directive_n part._n for_o 1._o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o may_v therefore_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v fulfil_v one_o way_n or_o other_o because_o the_o law_n be_v god_n be_v in_o itself_o holy_a just_a and_o good_n and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n that_o it_o can_v be_v a_o indifferent_a thing_n to_o the_o ever-wise_a and_o most_o holy_a lawgiver_n whether_o a_o law_n which_o be_v so_o be_v obey_v or_o not_o for_o that_o will_v be_v in_o effect_n to_o cast_v off_o all_o regard_n to_o duty_n holiness_n and_o righteousness_n nay_o which_o be_v yet_o more_o because_o every_o just_a law_n must_v for_o that_o reason_n even_o because_o it_o be_v just_a design_v the_o obedience_n of_o they_o for_o who_o it_o be_v make_v i_o say_v because_o it_o
mankind_n beside_o yet_o by_o such_o communication_n it_o be_v so_o far_o particularise_v if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v as_o that_o in_o the_o estimation_n of_o the_o gospel_n those_o who_o enjoy_v such_o communication_n do_v become_v a_o part_n of_o himself_o and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o such_o people_n be_v in_o the_o scripture_n say_v to_o be_v member_n of_o his_o body_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o of_o his_o bone_n and_o that_o he_o be_v so_o often_o in_o the_o same_o scripture_n call_v their_o head_n and_o we_o may_v know_v that_o he_o himself_o do_v so_o account_v they_o because_o he_o reckon_v those_o kindness_n which_o be_v do_v to_o his_o distress_a people_n as_o do_v unto_o himself_o these_o thing_n then_o be_v so_o how_o do_v the_o scripture_n teach_v we_o to_o reason_n upon_o they_o in_o relation_n to_o our_o present_a business_n why_o as_o sin_n be_v the_o transgression_n of_o adam_n entail_v upon_o all_o his_o posterity_n because_o the_o covenant_n be_v make_v with_o he_o and_o with_o all_o his_o seed_n for_o all_o mankind_n as_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n speak_v in_o the_o like_a case_n be_v in_o the_o loin_n of_o adam_n in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o transgression_n so_o believer_n in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n be_v regenerate_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o so_o become_v the_o child_n of_o god_n the_o righteousness_n son_n of_o god_n and_o the_o heir_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o to_o this_o very_a purpose_n and_o in_o this_o very_a manner_n too_o if_o i_o be_v not_o very_o much_o mistake_v the_o apostle_n argue_v in_o the_o five_o to_o the_o roman_n and_o the_o nineteenth_o verse_n for_o as_o by_o one_o man_n disobedience_n many_o be_v make_v sinner_n so_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o one_o shall_v many_o be_v make_v righteous_a and_o we_o may_v safe_o pronounce_v it_o that_o the_o parallel_n of_o the_o apostle_n will_v be_v no_o parallel_n at_o all_o if_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n be_v make_v we_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o his_o obedience_n shall_v be_v so_o for_o so_o long_o as_o the_o action_n of_o one_o man_n be_v not_o the_o action_n of_o any_o other_o man_n so_o long_v it_o must_v and_o will_v be_v true_a that_o the_o obedience_n which_o be_v only_o pay_v by_o such_o action_n and_o which_o be_v therefore_o undoubted_o lodge_v in_o such_o action_n can_v be_v that_o other_o neither_o this_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o objection_n which_o may_v be_v put_v in_o more_o word_n but_o because_o i_o think_v the_o full_a force_n of_o it_o be_v sufficient_o express_v in_o what_o we_o have_v speak_v therefore_o it_o need_v not_o 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o clear_v this_o matter_n we_o observe_v first_o that_o the_o right_n which_o one_o person_n have_v in_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v make_v over_o or_o transfer_v to_o another_o person_n by_o the_o delivery_n of_o such_o thing_n to_o he_o provide_v that_o he_o who_o deliver_v it_o do_v some_o way_n or_o other_o signify_v that_o it_o be_v his_o mind_n by_o such_o his_o delivery_n to_o transfer_v such_o his_o right_n where_o we_o must_v take_v notice_n of_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o bare_a delivery_n of_o the_o thing_n without_o such_o signification_n do_v not_o alter_v the_o right_n in_o such_o thing_n for_o in_o such_o case_n the_o thing_n be_v only_o transfer_v natural_o but_o not_o legal_o the_o right_a in_o it_o be_v not_o transfer_v with_o it_o take_v the_o thing_n in_o a_o instance_n a_o man_n put_v a_o purse_n of_o money_n into_o another_o man_n hand_n who_o stand_v by_o he_o to_o hold_v it_o in_o this_o case_n the_o purse_n and_o money_n be_v actual_o and_o natural_o transfer_v from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o but_o though_o it_o be_v natural_o transfer_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o for_o all_o that_o legal_o transfer_v for_o the_o alteration_n of_o the_o possession_n do_v not_o in_o the_o case_n alter_v the_o right_n and_o so_o though_o the_o money_n be_v remove_v from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o yet_o the_o propriety_n in_o the_o money_n be_v not_o on_o the_o other_o side_n one_o man_n by_o deed_n of_o gift_n or_o some_o other_o legal_a and_o sufficient_a conveyance_n make_v over_o his_o right_n in_o the_o purse_n of_o money_n to_o another_o but_o still_o keep_v the_o money_n in_o his_o own_o possession_n in_o such_o a_o case_n though_o the_o money_n be_v not_o natural_o or_o local_o call_v it_o which_o you_o please_v transfer_v or_o make_v over_o to_o that_o other_o yet_o it_o be_v legal_o so_o for_o though_o the_o possession_n remain_v in_o be_v transfer_v by_o delivery_n must_v be_v something_o which_o be_v capable_a as_o our_o law_n speak_v of_o manual_a occupation_n for_o though_o the_o right_n to_o some_o thing_n may_v be_v transfer_v by_o delivery_n yet_o the_o right_n to_o other_o can_v be_v so_o transfer_v 2._o second_o therefore_o the_o right_n in_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v transfer_v from_o one_o person_n to_o another_o by_o deed_n or_o any_o proper_a and_o legal_a instrument_n of_o conveyance_n there_o where_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v such_o that_o the_o thing_n itself_o can_v be_v transfer_v thing_n then_o may_v be_v legal_o and_o rightful_o transfer_v to_o another_o though_o because_o it_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o manual_a occupation_n it_o can_v be_v transfer_v local_o or_o natural_o 3._o three_o where_o a_o thing_n not_o capable_a of_o manual_a occupation_n do_v so_o
the_o law_n have_v promise_v to_o such_o obedience_n 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o our_o make_v good_a our_o first_o proposition_n we_o must_v examine_v what_o qualification_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o fit_v any_o one_o to_o make_v such_o purchase_n and_o then_o inquire_v far_o whether_o such_o qualification_n either_o do_v or_o can_v belong_v to_o any_o other_o beside_o our_o saviour_n alone_o 1._o now_o the_o first_o and_o lead_v qualification_n in_o he_o who_o shall_v be_v fit_v for_o the_o purchase_n of_o a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o have_v incur_v who_o transgress_v the_o law_n be_v that_o he_o who_o make_v such_o a_o purchase_n must_v be_v one_o of_o the_o same_o kind_a with_o they_o to_o who_o the_o law_n be_v give_v that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n must_v be_v a_o man._n for_o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o man_n be_v break_v by_o man_n and_o therefore_o also_o the_o breach_n of_o it_o in_o the_o other_o from_o the_o penalty_n of_o sin_n must_v not_o therefore_o be_v a_o sinner_n himself_o because_o if_o he_o be_v so_o than_o he_o must_v by_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o even_o according_a to_o the_o tenor_n of_o that_o law_n which_o assign_v such_o penalty_n suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o he_o who_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o his_o own_o sin_n can_v therefore_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o at_o least_o in_o the_o present_a case_n he_o can_v because_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v the_o loss_n of_o life_n his_o own_o penalty_n exhaust_v the_o whole_a stock_n or_o possibility_n of_o his_o so_o suffer_v for_o he_o who_o have_v but_o one_o life_n and_o no_o man_n have_v more_o can_v pay_v that_o life_n but_o once_o and_o therefore_o if_o he_o lay_v it_o down_o for_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n have_v nothing_o remain_v to_o lay_v down_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o other_o 3._o he_o who_o be_v due_o qualify_v to_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n a_o release_n from_o the_o penalty_n of_o their_o sin_n must_v be_v a_o man_n who_o life_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n and_o the_o reason_n for_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o obvious_a because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v make_v no_o such_o purchase_n and_o the_o life_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v therefore_o make_v any_o such_o purchase_n because_o the_o death_n of_o no_o single_a man_n can_v make_v such_o a_o purchase_n for_o himself_o for_o what_o no_o single_a man_n death_n can_v do_v for_o himself_o that_o the_o death_n of_o all_o man_n can_v do_v for_o all_o for_o there_o be_v just_a the_o same_o proportion_n between_o all_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o all_o that_o there_o be_v between_o one_o man_n and_o the_o death_n of_o one_o beside_o suppose_v a_o man_n to_o be_v a_o transgressor_n of_o the_o law_n it_o look_v very_o absurd_a to_o affirm_v that_o the_o death_n of_o such_o a_o man_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o transgression_n can_v be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o release_n from_o such_o punishment_n for_o then_o the_o selfsame_a thing_n and_o that_o be_v his_o death_n will_v bear_v a_o quite_o contrary_a character_n for_o it_o will_v be_v both_o the_o wage_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o purchase_n of_o his_o ransom_n that_o be_v it_o will_v be_v the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o his_o freedom_n from_o the_o same_o vengeance_n every_o sinner_n therefore_o against_o the_o law_n must_v be_v a_o sufferer_n under_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n and_o that_o law_n which_o adjudge_v those_o who_o transgress_v it_o to_o death_n do_v not_o by_o so_o do_v design_n to_o return_v they_o to_o life_n for_o if_o it_o do_v then_o by_o inflict_v its_o sentence_n it_o must_v design_n to_o revoke_v that_o sentence_n and_o by_o make_v the_o punishment_n a_o release_n from_o the_o punishment_n must_v look_v like_o trifle_a and_o not_o like_o justice_n the_o loss_n of_o no_o sinner_n life_n then_o be_v of_o value_v sufficient_a to_o put_v a_o period_n to_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o sentence_n which_o the_o law_n pronounce_v against_o those_o who_o do_v transgress_v it_o and_o every_o man_n death_n in_o the_o course_n of_o the_o law_n have_v be_v eternal_a be_v there_o nothing_o else_o to_o remove_v it_o but_o his_o own_o strength_n that_o be_v in_o the_o present_a case_n but_o his_o own_o death_n for_o if_o the_o death_n of_o a_o dead_a man_n can_v do_v nothing_o for_o he_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o other_o of_o his_o power_n or_o merit_n can_v for_o in_o the_o case_n before_o we_o he_o can_v have_v no_o other_o merit_n of_o his_o own_o to_o restore_v he_o to_o life_n but_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n as_o we_o have_v see_v be_v none_o at_o all_o and_o to_o expect_v any_o relief_n from_o a_o dead_a man_n power_n be_v to_o expect_v relief_n from_o no_o power_n at_o all_o for_o death_n crush_v all_o the_o power_n of_o all_o man_n who_o it_o seize_v now_o this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o all_o man_n who_o die_v because_o they_o be_v sinner_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o safe_o conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n who_o be_v not_o a_o sinner_n shall_v undertake_v by_o his_o own_o death_n to_o make_v good_a the_o ransom_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n from_o death_n and_o after_o that_o shall_v make_v good_a his_o undertake_n i_o say_v if_o any_o man_n shall_v do_v this_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o his_o death_n or_o his_o life_n which_o you_o will_v be_v therefore_o of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o life_n or_o death_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n because_o he_o do_v by_o it_o make_v that_o purchase_n which_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v not_o do_v by_o they_o for_o in_o the_o present_a case_n the_o value_n of_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v true_o and_o just_o estimate_v by_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o purchase_n it_o can_v make_v because_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o purchase_n depend_v upon_o the_o allowance_n of_o the_o great_a and_o just_a god_n and_o then_o when_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o release_v man_n from_o death_n in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o his_o innocent_a saviour_n and_o when_o he_o be_v not_o so_o in_o consideration_n of_o sinful_a man_n be_v own_o death_n and_o when_o he_o do_v profess_o declare_v such_o his_o will_n in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o word_n and_o by_o the_o repeat_v attestation_n of_o matter_n of_o fact_n whereby_o several_a people_n have_v be_v raise_v from_o the_o dead_a in_o the_o name_n and_o by_o the_o profess_a power_n of_o the_o saviour_n i_o say_v when_o we_o find_v all_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v so_o as_o we_o do_v or_o at_o least_o easy_o may_v find_v they_o so_o to_o be_v we_o may_v from_o the_o whole_a conclude_v that_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o the_o death_n of_o all_o mankind_n because_o it_o can_v do_v that_o which_o the_o death_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n can_v do_v and_o that_o too_o by_o the_o allowance_n of_o god_n himself_o now_o from_o these_o proposition_n so_o lay_v down_o we_o may_v therefore_o conclude_v that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o only_o in_o our_o saviour_n set_v forth_o in_o the_o gospel_n 1._o because_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a in_o justice_n that_o the_o
be_v but_o type_n and_o shadow_n it_o be_v notorious_a for_o that_o very_a reason_n that_o they_o be_v not_o the_o reality_n and_o substance_n and_o that_o therefore_o the_o expiation_n do_v not_o belong_v to_o they_o take_v what_o we_o say_v in_o the_o apostle_n word_n and_o so_o it_o may_v be_v more_o satisfactory_a in_o the_o ten_o to_o the_o hebrew_n and_o the_o beginning_n for_o the_o law_n have_v a_o shadow_n of_o good_a thing_n to_o come_v and_o not_o the_o very_a image_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v never_o with_o these_o sacrifice_n which_o they_o offer_v year_n by_o tear_n continual_o make_v the_o comer_n thereunto_o perfect_a and_o after_o some_o other_o thing_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o conclude_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n that_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o blood_n of_o bull_n and_o goat_n shall_v take_v away_o sin_n and_o therefore_o though_o it_o be_v free_o grant_v that_o a_o remission_n of_o sin_n do_v usual_o follow_v upon_o the_o offering_n of_o those_o legal_a and_o ritual_a sacrifice_n yet_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o must_v be_v grant_v also_o that_o such_o remission_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o any_o real_a expiation_n that_o be_v make_v by_o those_o sacrifice_n but_o only_o from_o that_o expiation_n of_o which_o they_o be_v the_o type_n viz._n from_o the_o expiation_n make_v by_o the_o consummation_n of_o a_o thing_n 2._o but_o second_o the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n offer_v to_o god_n as_o a_o expiatory_a sacrâ—fice_n for_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v the_o expiatiâ—_n design_v sacrifice_n for_o thâ—_n expiation_n of_o sin_n 3._o the_o life_n of_o the_o creature_n offer_v tâ—_n god_n for_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n can_v never_o make_v such_o expiation_n because_o the_o be_v of_o far_o less_o value_n and_o that_o too_o not_o only_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n but_o also_o in_o thâ—_n estimation_n of_o those_o that_o offer_v they_o than_o thâ—_n live_v of_o those_o for_o who_o they_o be_v offer_v now_o it_o can_v never_o answer_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n to_o pay_v our_o creditor_n only_o a_o hundreâ—_o penny_n when_o we_o owe_v he_o a_o hundred_o pound_n and_o he_o who_o shall_v think_v that_o he_o can_v so_o discharge_v his_o debt_n may_v by_o the_o same_o measure_v come_v in_o time_n to_o reckon_v that_o he_o may_v discharge_v it_o for_o nothing_o i_o have_v speak_v something_o the_o large_a to_o these_o thing_n though_o perhaps_o it_o may_v seem_v needless_a partly_o because_o they_o have_v be_v a_o part_n of_o god_n own_o institute_v worship_n partly_o because_o they_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o religious_a worship_n of_o many_o nation_n at_o this_o day_n but_o chief_o because_o they_o have_v a_o relation_n to_o that_o great_a sacrifice_n which_o be_v the_o main_a design_n of_o all_o our_o discourse_n and_o this_o our_o design_n will_v still_o be_v farther_v if_o we_o consider_v in_o the_o 4._o four_o place_n that_o as_o neither_o man_n for_o himself_o nor_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v inferior_a to_o he_o can_v make_v any_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o creature_n above_o he_o now_o the_o most_o exalt_a creature_n that_o revelation_n have_v acquaint_v we_o with_o and_o we_o know_v nothing_o in_o this_o case_n but_o what_o we_o have_v from_o revelation_n be_v the_o angel_n and_o archangel_n and_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o satisfy_v that_o those_o glorious_a being_n can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n because_o it_o appear_v by_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n that_o they_o can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o such_o revelation_n that_o some_o of_o they_o have_v sin_v so_o we_o be_v in_o the_o same_o tell_v that_o those_o that_o have_v so_o do_v be_v reserve_v in_o everlasting_a chain_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n now_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n and_o sure_o everlasting_a chain_n and_o a_o fearful_a expectation_n of_o judgement_n do_v imply_v misery_n for_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v but_o i_o say_v our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n as_o not_o to_o free_v itself_o from_o it_o be_v it_o in_o its_o power_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o the_o same_o natural_a reason_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o true_a reason_n why_o the_o fall_a angel_n do_v not_o do_v so_o be_v because_o they_o can_v do_v so_o and_o if_o they_o can_v expiate_v their_o own_o sin_n we_o may_v be_v pretty_a well_o satisfy_v that_o they_o can_v expiate_v sin_n at_o all_o and_o we_o may_v be_v the_o rather_o so_o satisfy_v because_o we_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o they_o will_v in_o the_o case_n employ_v their_o best_a endeavour_n for_o themselves_o as_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o they_o love_v themselves_o best_o beside_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o case_n of_o mankind_n death_n be_v threaten_v as_o the_o penalty_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o we_o may_v be_v pretty_a well_o satisfy_v that_o without_o death_n no_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v for_o without_o blood_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o have_v some_o reason_n to_o believe_v that_o angel_n be_v not_o liable_a to_o death_n at_o least_o not_o to_o such_o a_o death_n to_o which_o man_n be_v obnoxious_a and_o therefore_o for_o this_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o the_o former_a we_o may_v pretty_a rational_o conclude_v that_o the_o angel_n be_v in_o no_o capacity_n to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o can_v do_v it_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v add_v to_o this_o head_n before_o i_o leave_v it_o and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o though_o the_o angel_n be_v very_o glorious_a and_o exalt_a creature_n and_o by_o the_o account_n we_o have_v of_o they_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v place_v in_o a_o much_o high_a scale_n in_o the_o creation_n than_o man_n and_o so_o be_v far_o above_o he_o yet_o still_o because_o they_o be_v creature_n they_o be_v therefore_o at_o as_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o god_n as_o man_n himself_o be_v for_o their_o distance_n from_o he_o be_v infinite_a and_o there_o be_v we_o know_v no_o degree_n in_o infinity_o now_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n and_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o because_o there_o be_v a_o infinite_a distance_n between_o god_n and_o angel_n as_o well_o as_o there_o be_v between_o god_n and_o man_n i_o say_v for_o these_o reason_n we_o can_v no_o more_o think_v the_o interposition_n of_o a_o angel_n effectual_a for_o make_v a_o atonement_n and_o expiation_n for_o sin_n than_o we_o can_v think_v the_o interposition_n of_o a_o man_n to_o be_v so_o and_o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v a_o sort_n of_o creature_n a_o thousand_o nay_o ten_o thousand_o or_o more_o time_n as_o much_o above_o angel_n as_o angel_n be_v above_o man_n yet_o because_o after_o such_o a_o supposition_n even_o this_o sort_n of_o creature_n be_v as_o much_o below_o god_n as_o man_n be_v and_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n if_o attempt_v by_o such_o creature_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n therefore_o we_o can_v think_v that_o the_o dignity_n of_o their_o station_n can_v contribute_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o towards_o the_o make_v their_o attempt_v expiation_n effectual_a and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o unquestionable_a proof_n
too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o that_o creature_n so_o different_a shall_v be_v under_o different_a law_n and_o that_o therefore_o neither_o their_o obedience_n to_o nor_o their_o transgression_n of_o those_o several_a law_n under_o which_o they_o be_v shall_v have_v any_o such_o concern_v or_o relation_n to_o one_o another_o as_o that_o one_o sort_n of_o creature_n shall_v in_o any_o case_n undergo_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o other_o sort_n of_o creature_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o absurd_a and_o unjust_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o a_o angel_n i_o say_v for_o the_o same_o reason_n we_o shall_v think_v it_o no_o less_o absurd_a and_o unjust_a that_o a_o angel_n shall_v suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o a_o man._n the_o thing_n may_v be_v make_v out_o in_o more_o word_n but_o it_o need_v not_o now_o these_o few_o remark_n be_v leave_v by_o the_o way_n to_o give_v perspicuity_n and_o strength_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n by_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n as_o that_o redemption_n be_v express_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n will_v appear_v from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o and_o first_o our_o saviour_n who_o by_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n undertake_v the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n be_v as_o real_o and_o very_o a_o man_n himself_o as_o be_v those_o who_o he_o undertake_v to_o redeem_v this_o be_v evident_a because_o he_o be_v all_o along_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n call_v man_n the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o the_o like_a as_o we_o have_v make_v it_o out_o already_o and_o this_o so_o far_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n to_o the_o law_n that_o 1._o as_o the_o law_n threaten_v the_o punishment_n to_o man_n alone_o and_o to_o no_o other_o creature_n so_o in_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o redemption_n man_n alone_o suffer_v such_o punishment_n and_o no_o creature_n beside_o 2._o and_o second_o as_o it_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n to_o the_o law_n because_o our_o saviour_n who_o suffer_v in_o order_n to_o such_o purchase_n be_v a_o man_n so_o it_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n because_o our_o saviour_n who_o suffer_v in_o order_n to_o such_o purchase_n be_v a_o innocent_a man._n it_o may_v perhaps_o at_o first_o sight_n look_v strange_a when_o i_o say_v that_o the_o purchase_n of_o redemption_n by_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n be_v accommodate_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n but_o the_o wonder_n will_v then_o vanish_v when_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o make_v it_o out_o that_o though_o a_o innocent_a man_n can_v without_o his_o own_o consent_n be_v just_o punish_v yet_o that_o with_o such_o his_o consent_n he_o may_v be_v so_o punish_v but_o because_o that_o belong_v to_o another_o place_n therefore_o in_o this_o i_o pass_v it_o by_o for_o that_o that_o i_o design_n at_o present_a be_v only_o to_o show_v that_o it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n that_o a_o criminal_a against_o the_o law_n shall_v expiate_v another_o man_n sin_n by_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n because_o the_o penalty_n which_o he_o suffer_v be_v the_o just_a demerit_n and_o wage_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o can_v by_o undergo_a the_o punishment_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n add_v any_o such_o desert_n to_o such_o his_o punishment_n as_o to_o make_v it_o meritorious_a of_o impunity_n to_o any_o other_o sinner_n as_o therefore_o under_o the_o last_o head_n we_o learn_v that_o he_o who_o by_o his_o punishment_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o another_o man_n must_v in_o reason_n and_o congruity_n be_v a_o man_n himself_o so_o under_o this_o head_n we_o may_v learn_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man_n likewise_o and_o so_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n will_v afford_v we_o a_o further_a congruity_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n in_o that_o that_o saviour_n be_v exhibit_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n not_o only_o to_o be_v a_o man_n but_o also_o to_o be_v a_o innocent_a man._n 3._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n by_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n as_o that_o saviour_n be_v a_o man_n will_v yet_o far_o and_o more_o notorious_o appear_v if_o we_o consider_v the_o first_o rise_n and_o formation_n of_o mankind_n according_a to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o it_o for_o there_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o general_a that_o god_n do_v of_o one_o blood_n make_v all_o nation_n of_o man_n for_o to_o dwell_v on_o the_o face_n of_o the_o whole_a earth_n in_o the_o seventeen_o chapter_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o then_o if_o we_o look_v back_o to_o the_o original_a creation_n of_o mankind_n and_o there_o inquire_v more_o particular_o how_o this_o be_v do_v we_o shall_v from_o thence_o be_v inform_v that_o god_n first_o make_v adam_n out_o of_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o after_o that_o he_o make_v eve_n out_o of_o adam_n both_o of_o they_o extraordinary_a and_o miraculous_a production_n and_o that_o then_o through_o all_o succeed_a out_o of_o the_o woman_n and_o according_o the_o first_o promise_n of_o redemption_n that_o god_n give_v to_o adam_n after_o he_o have_v sin_v be_v prophetical_o word_v when_o he_o tell_v he_o that_o and_o that_o the_o intimacy_n of_o such_o relation_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o the_o saviour_n and_o all_o mankind_n do_v derive_v from_o one_o single_a and_o common_a fountain_n and_o hence_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o one_o place_n that_o as_o by_o man_n come_v death_n there_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o wage_n of_o such_o sin_n by_o man_n come_v also_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a there_o be_v the_o redemption_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o purchase_n and_o more_o express_o still_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n speak_v the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o so_o many_o stumbling-block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o plain_a and_o honest_a christian_n 4._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o our_o saviour_n incarnation_n in_o order_n to_o his_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n do_v yet_o far_o appear_v in_o that_o by_o become_a man_n he_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o capacity_n of_o suffer_a death_n that_o be_v of_o suffer_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o those_o that_o shall_v transgress_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o do_v indeed_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o god_n veracity_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o threaten_v great_a vengeance_n in_o any_o law_n before_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o than_o he_o will_v execute_v after_o the_o transgression_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o prevent_v such_o transgression_n for_o god_n never_o yet_o threaten_v any_o peremptory_a and_o unconditional_a punishment_n in_o any_o law_n which_o he_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o his_o death_n and_o that_o too_o in_o our_o stead_n we_o see_v that_o all_o man_n and_o even_o those_o who_o hope_v for_o salvation_n by_o such_o his_o death_n do_v yet_o die_v what_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o case_n have_v puchase_v for_o we_o be_v not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o death_n and_o therefore_o that_o redemption_n from_o death_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n be_v to_o be_v accomplish_v after_o we_o have_v be_v dead_a by_o a_o resurrection_n a_o resurrection_n than_o be_v to_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o his_o death_n purchase_v for_o we_o not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o our_o death_n by_o such_o resurrection_n now_o as_o his_o death_n be_v necessary_a for_o such_o a_o purchase_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o such_o his_o death_n and_o he_o be_v therefore_o make_v of_o the_o same_o blood_n with_o all_o mankind_n that_o by_o shed_v that_o blood_n for_o mankind_n he_o may_v after_o his_o own_o resurrection_n restore_v the_o life_n of_o all_o man_n which_o have_v be_v forfeit_v by_o adam_n transgression_n so_o that_o as_o his_o death_n be_v the_o meritorious_a expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o as_o a_o resurrection_n be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o such_o his_o expiation_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v a_o necessary_a forerunner_n of_o such_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o before_o he_o can_v possible_o die_v for_o man_n and_o so_o purchase_v a_o redemption_n of_o man_n from_o death_n it_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n that_o he_o shall_v become_v man_n himself_o but_o then_o how_o his_o death_n come_v to_o be_v of_o so_o valuable_a a_o price_n as_o to_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o purchase_n we_o must_v leave_v to_o far_a enquiry_n for_o by_o that_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n so_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o his_o humanity_n shall_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o divinity_n and_o by_o both_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o so_o much_o they_o tell_v we_o no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n chap._n vi_o the_o divinity_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n necessary_a for_o the_o expitation_n of_o man_n sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o humanity_n some_o doctrinal_a inference_n a_o general_a proof_n that_o as_o our_o saviour_n do_v actual_o die_v so_o that_o he_o may_v just_o die_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n have_v therefore_o see_v that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v qualify_v by_o his_o incarnation_n to_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o and_o that_o such_o his_o qualification_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v how_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n come_v to_o be_v of_o such_o a_o value_n as_o to_o be_v just_o sufficient_a to_o make_v good_a such_o a_o expiation_n for_o because_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n if_o he_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man_n be_v but_o the_o death_n of_o a_o creature_n and_o because_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o its_o punishment_n in_o another_o creature_n be_v stead_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o that_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o it_o can_v than_o a_o creature_n may_v by_o its_o own_o punishment_n
be_v no_o security_n that_o any_o creature_n personal_a or_o natural_a holiness_n shall_v be_v eternal_a if_o therefore_o we_o shall_v bring_v our_o present_a business_n to_o this_o case_n and_o by_o compare_v one_o with_o the_o other_o take_v leave_n to_o judge_v of_o what_o may_v be_v by_o have_v see_v what_o have_v be_v we_o may_v take_v notice_n that_o if_o our_o saviour_n do_v nothing_o more_o for_o man_n salvation_n but_o only_o expunge_v the_o gild_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o so_o restore_v he_o again_o to_o his_o original_a innocence_n all_o this_o will_v warrant_v no_o more_o than_o that_o man_n shall_v by_o this_o mean_n have_v be_v restore_v to_o that_o innocence_n or_o holiness_n of_o which_o adam_n stand_v possess_v before_o his_o transgression_n but_o that_o this_o holiness_n shall_v be_v last_v and_o eternal_a we_o have_v not_o all_o this_o while_n any_o the_o least_o ground_n of_o warrant_n no_o nor_o of_o conjecture_n nav_n we_o may_v rather_o conclude_v that_o it_o will_v not_o be_v so_o because_o we_o know_v to_o our_o cost_n that_o adam_n be_v not_o so_o for_o i_o will_v ask_v whether_o this_o innocence_n or_o holiness_n be_v sufficient_a to_o make_v man_n happy_a if_o it_o be_v both_o answer_v and_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v then_o i_o will_v further_o demand_v whether_o it_o will_v secure_v that_o happiness_n to_o eternity_n if_o it_o will_v than_o it_o must_v be_v something_o more_o than_o a_o restoration_n of_o man_n to_o a_o state_n of_o a_o adamical_a holiness_n for_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o that_o first_o holiness_n can_v do_v no_o such_o thing_n if_o it_o will_v not_o than_o it_o will_v not_o answer_v to_o a_o gospel-salvation_n because_o such_o a_o salvation_n do_v imply_v in_o it_o everlasting_a happiness_n and_o everlasting_a happiness_n must_v as_o we_o have_v see_v be_v attend_v with_o everlasting_a holiness_n in_o one_o word_n therefore_o if_o as_o man_n happiness_n do_v depend_v upon_o his_o holiness_n so_o his_o everlasting_a happiness_n must_v depend_v upon_o his_o everlasting_a holiness_n then_o we_o may_v well_o reckon_v that_o that_o holiness_n of_o man_n which_o shall_v accompany_v eternal_a salvation_n must_v be_v a_o indefectible_a holiness_n that_o shall_v never_o fail_v and_o therefore_o who_o reward_n shall_v never_o cease_v and_o by_o this_o time_n we_o hope_v that_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o we_o have_v lay_v down_o and_o of_o what_o we_o design_v to_o make_v good_a may_v begin_v to_o appear_v which_o be_v 1._o that_o the_o chief_a design_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v into_o the_o world_n be_v to_o bring_v sinful_a man_n to_o a_o state_n of_o perfect_a holiness_n for_o by_o that_o man_n be_v chief_a happiness_n and_o which_o be_v yet_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o god_n original_a dominion_n and_o jurisdiction_n over_o man_n be_v provide_v for_o 2._o that_o a_o everlasting_a holiness_n be_v require_v to_o a_o everlasting_a happiness_n 3._o that_o such_o a_o holiness_n be_v none_o of_o man_n be_v own_o and_o that_o therefore_o 4._o it_o must_v come_v from_o some_o other_o and_o that_o that_o other_o must_v be_v god_n have_v therefore_o see_v by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v that_o a_o everlasting_a holiness_n be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o man_n be_v everlasting_a salvation_n and_o that_o such_o holiness_n must_v come_v from_o god_n let_v we_o proceed_v and_o by_o that_o light_n which_o his_o revelation_n have_v afford_v we_o in_o this_o case_n inquire_v what_o provision_n god_n have_v make_v for_o the_o furnish_n man_n with_o such_o a_o holiness_n in_o order_n to_o such_o his_o salvation_n and_o 1._o we_o be_v instruct_v by_o such_o revelation_n that_o god_n send_v his_o son_n our_o saviour_n into_o the_o world_n clothe_v with_o the_o same_o flesh_n with_o sinful_a man_n to_o instruct_v and_o direct_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n by_o his_o doctrine_n and_o by_o his_o example_n that_o upon_o this_o account_n he_o be_v call_v the_o light_n of_o the_o world_n for_o he_o make_v our_o duty_n plain_a and_o intelligible_a take_v off_o that_o veil_n from_o man_n understanding_n by_o which_o they_o be_v induce_v to_o believe_v that_o holiness_n do_v consist_v in_o outward_a wash_n in_o ceremony_n and_o formality_n and_o such_o other_o or_o mode_n or_o gesture_n which_o contain_v nothing_o of_o true_a holiness_n in_o they_o because_o they_o do_v not_o form_v our_o spirit_n to_o god_n likeness_n nor_o make_v we_o holy_a as_o he_o be_v holy_a and_o because_o he_o find_v man_n lade_v with_o sin_n he_o do_v thing_n be_v design_v for_o such_o a_o purpose_n by_o he_o and_o because_o they_o have_v in_o themselves_o a_o natural_a tendency_n to_o bring_v such_o design_n to_o pass_v and_o because_o last_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n do_v in_o the_o whole_a oeconomy_n of_o it_o proceed_v from_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n therefore_o these_o thing_n when_o sum_v up_o together_o under_o one_o denomination_n be_v call_v mean_n of_o grace_n these_o therefore_o and_o the_o like_a mean_n of_o grace_n and_o they_o too_o back_v and_o confirm_v by_o miracle_n our_o saviour_n make_v use_v of_o to_o engage_v man_n to_o practice_v and_o attain_v that_o holiness_n by_o which_o alone_o they_o can_v in_o justice_n be_v fit_v for_o salvation_n 2._o but_o then_o second_o we_o be_v instruct_v temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o what_o from_o his_o own_o wicked_a habitual_a and_o overrule_a practice_n every_o man_n fall_v short_a of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o his_o very_a best_a practice_n be_v corrupt_v with_o carelessness_n or_o inadvertency_n or_o wilfulness_n and_o all_o of_o they_o evil_a do_v not_o beget_v in_o he_o that_o holiness_n to_o which_o alone_a eternal_a no_o man_n do_v or_o can_v hearty_o and_o sincere_o desire_v any_o thing_n who_o do_v not_o also_o hearty_o endeavour_v to_o obtain_v it_o now_o a_o hearty_a desire_n and_o a_o hearty_a endeavour_n after_o holiness_n do_v if_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v open_a and_o enlarge_v the_o soul_n to_o admit_v and_o receive_v such_o holiness_n whenever_o god_n shall_v be_v please_v to_o bestow_v it_o and_o
