place_n that_o as_o neither_o man_n for_o himself_o nor_o the_o creature_n that_o be_v inferior_a to_o he_o can_v make_v any_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n so_o neither_o can_v the_o creature_n above_o he_o now_o the_o most_o exalt_a creature_n that_o revelation_n have_v acquaint_v we_o with_o and_o we_o know_v nothing_o in_o this_o case_n but_o what_o we_o have_v from_o revelation_n be_v the_o angel_n and_o archangel_n and_o we_o may_v be_v therefore_o satisfy_v that_o those_o glorious_a being_n can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n because_o it_o appear_v by_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n that_o they_o can_v never_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o such_o revelation_n that_o some_o of_o they_o have_v sin_v so_o we_o be_v in_o the_o same_o tell_v that_o those_o that_o have_v so_o do_v be_v reserve_v in_o everlasting_a chain_n to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o great_a day_n now_o our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n and_o sure_o everlasting_a chain_n and_o a_o fearful_a expectation_n of_o judgement_n do_v imply_v misery_n for_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v but_o i_o say_v our_o natural_a reason_n tell_v we_o that_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o misery_n as_o not_o to_o free_v itself_o from_o it_o be_v it_o in_o its_o power_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o the_o same_o natural_a reason_n do_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o true_a reason_n why_o the_o fall_a angel_n do_v not_o they_o love_v themselves_o best_o beside_o we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o case_n of_o mankind_n death_n be_v threaten_v as_o the_o penalty_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o we_o may_v be_v pretty_a well_o satisfy_v that_o without_o death_n no_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v for_o without_o blood_n there_o be_v no_o remission_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o have_v some_o reason_n to_o believe_v that_o angel_n be_v not_o liable_a to_o death_n at_o least_o not_o to_o such_o a_o death_n to_o which_o man_n be_v obnoxious_a and_o therefore_o for_o this_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o the_o former_a we_o may_v pretty_a rational_o conclude_v that_o the_o angel_n be_v in_o no_o capacity_n to_o expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o therefore_o they_o can_v do_v it_o one_o thing_n more_o i_o will_v add_v to_o this_o head_n before_o i_o leave_v it_o and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o though_o the_o angel_n be_v very_o glorious_a and_o exalt_a creature_n and_o by_o the_o account_n we_o have_v of_o they_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v place_v in_o a_o much_o high_a scale_n in_o the_o creation_n than_o man_n and_o so_o be_v far_o above_o he_o yet_o still_o because_o they_o be_v creature_n they_o be_v therefore_o at_o as_o great_a a_o distance_n from_o god_n as_o man_n himself_o be_v for_o their_o distance_n from_o he_o be_v infinite_a and_o there_o be_v we_o know_v no_o degree_n in_o infinity_o now_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n and_o to_o god_n alone_o and_o because_o there_o be_v a_o infinite_a distance_n effectual_a for_o make_v a_o atonement_n and_o expiation_n for_o sin_n than_o we_o can_v think_v the_o interposition_n of_o a_o man_n to_o be_v so_o and_o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v a_o sort_n of_o creature_n a_o thousand_o nay_o ten_o thousand_o or_o more_o time_n as_o much_o above_o angel_n as_o angel_n be_v above_o man_n yet_o because_o after_o such_o a_o supposition_n even_o this_o sort_n of_o creature_n be_v as_o much_o below_o god_n as_o man_n be_v and_o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n if_o attempt_v by_o such_o creature_n be_v to_o be_v make_v to_o god_n therefore_o we_o can_v think_v that_o the_o dignity_n of_o their_o station_n can_v contribute_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o towards_o the_o make_v their_o attempt_v expiation_n effectual_a and_o we_o know_v and_o that_o too_o by_o unquestionable_a proof_n
reason_n of_o man_n tenure_n and_o subjection_n six_o as_o we_o may_v suppose_v the_o forbid_v tree_n to_o have_v stand_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o garden_n from_o the_o nine_o verse_n of_o the_o second_o chapter_n of_o genesis_n so_o a_o tree_n so_o place_v be_v by_o its_o very_a situation_n a_o very_a fit_a and_o proper_a thing_n to_o be_v make_v use_n of_o for_o such_o a_o purpose_n upon_o the_o express_a word_n of_o it_o so_o it_o be_v moral_a if_o we_o consider_v what_o be_v imply_v in_o it_o and_o therefore_o as_o the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a transgression_n of_o the_o law_n be_v the_o eat_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n so_o the_o couch_a immorality_n of_o such_o transgression_n be_v a_o usurpation_n upon_o god_n prerogative_n in_o this_o low_a world_n and_o a_o encroachment_n upon_o the_o reserve_a right_n and_o demean_n of_o the_o supreme_a lord_n the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n then_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o god_n command_n but_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o imply_v law_n be_v a_o sin_n against_o his_o natural_a and_o supreme_a right_n the_o first_o be_v a_o sin_n because_o it_o do_v what_o god_n have_v express_o forbid_v the_o last_o be_v implicit_o forbid_v because_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v a_o sin_n though_o god_n do_v not_o express_o forbid_v it_o the_o first_o be_v therefore_o only_o unlawful_a which_o be_v not_o express_o contain_v in_o the_o law_n 3._o such_o punishment_n so_o threaten_v against_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o express_a law_n be_v express_v absolute_a and_o peremptory_a adam_n then_o do_v therefore_o fatal_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n because_o he_o sin_v against_o a_o express_a prohibition_n which_o be_v ratify_v by_o a_o absolute_a peremptory_a and_o express_v threat_n for_o god_n may_v therefore_o be_v think_v to_o be_v oblige_v by_o his_o truth_n to_o punish_v adam_n transgression_n according_a to_o the_o express_a threat_n of_o the_o law_n threaten_n of_o a_o express_a penalty_n antecedent_n to_o the_o commission_n of_o the_o crime_n can_v only_o be_v proper_a there_o where_o there_o be_v a_o express_a law_n command_v a_o duty_n whereas_o man_n have_v never_o by_o his_o reason_n know_v that_o it_o have_v be_v a_o sin_n to_o eat_v of_o any_o fruit_n which_o kind_o offer_v itself_o to_o his_o view_n and_o natural_a inclination_n if_o such_o fruit_n have_v not_o be_v forbid_v by_o some_o express_a law_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_a it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o penalty_n of_o such_o law_n shall_v be_v express_v too_o 5._o as_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o moral_a duty_n which_o be_v only_o imply_v in_o the_o law_n be_v rather_o make_v by_o way_n of_o information_n than_o by_o way_n of_o peremptory_a threat_n and_o absolute_a denunciation_n therefore_o god_n be_v oblige_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o such_o penalty_n only_o by_o his_o justice_n but_o not_o at_o all_o by_o his_o veracity_n if_o then_o there_o be_v a_o mean_v provide_v to_o satisfy_v such_o his_o justice_n without_o the_o rigorous_a will_v just_o save_v we_o from_o the_o punishment_n peremptory_o threaten_v to_o adam_n viz._n the_o loss_n of_o life_n execute_v upon_o he_o and_o all_o mankind_n by_o release_n we_o from_o it_o after_o we_o have_v suffer_v it_o and_o from_o a_o future_a and_o eternal_a punishment_n express_o reveal_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o christian_n and_o probable_o also_o after_o the_o fall_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n believe_v by_o the_o patriarch_n and_o by_o god_n church_n among_o the_o jew_n by_o prevent_v it_o chap._n i._n the_o scripture_n do_v most_o express_o assert_v that_o mankind_n be_v redeem_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n or_o to_o the_o method_n of_o his_o proceed_n in_o the_o like_a case_n to_o employ_v great_a mean_n to_o bring_v his_o purpose_n to_o pass_v where_o less_o may_v be_v sufficient_a punishment_n be_v the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n a_o objection_n to_o this_o position_n answer_v and_o as_o we_o have_v ground_v what_o we_o have_v say_v in_o the_o introduction_n upon_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n which_o have_v acquaint_v we_o how_o sin_n and_o the_o punishment_n of_o it_o death_n enter_v into_o the_o world_n so_o in_o what_o be_v to_o follow_v concern_v the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n both_o from_o sin_n and_o punishment_n we_o shall_v take_v our_o rise_n from_o revelation_n likewise_o not_o only_o because_o we_o have_v know_v nothing_o of_o the_o matter_n but_o by_o revelation_n but_o also_o because_o in_o the_o present_a case_n revelation_n be_v undoubted_o the_o best_a guide_n of_o our_o reason_n for_o reason_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v guide_v best_a by_o that_o without_o the_o guidance_n of_o which_o reason_n itself_o be_v confess_o blind_a and_o we_o be_v very_o sure_a that_o it_o become_v all_o those_o who_o acknowledge_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n i_o say_v it_o become_v they_o in_o modesty_n and_o deference_n to_o the_o author_n and_o in_o prudence_n for_o their_o own_o more_o certain_a conduct_n rather_o to_o endeavour_v to_o bring_v their_o reason_n to_o comply_v with_o the_o revelation_n than_o to_o bring_v the_o revelation_n to_o comply_v with_o their_o reason_n and_o therefore_o that_o we_o ourselves_o may_v practice_v what_o we_o can_v but_o judge_v to_o be_v best_a in_o the_o practice_n of_o other_o we_o shall_v lay_v the_o groundwork_n of_o all_o that_o be_v to_o follow_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o st._n peter_n in_o the_o four_o of_o the_o act_n and_o the_o twelve_o verse_n neither_o be_v there_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o the_o verse_n as_o in_o the_o ten_o verse_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o impotent_a man_n be_v make_v whole_a by_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o beginning_n and_o that_o he_o be_v make_v whole_a by_o him_n that_o be_v by_o jesus_n christ_n in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o verse_n those_o who_o profess_o and_o avow_o make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o evacuate_v the_o purchase_n of_o our_o saviour_n merit_n and_o blood_n do_v to_o that_o purpose_n start_v if_o not_o a_o impertinent_a yet_o a_o very_a saucy_a question_n which_o be_v whether_o or_o no_o god_n can_v not_o have_v save_v sinful_a man_n by_o some_o other_o mean_n than_o by_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n will_v alter_v
and_o his_o law_n he_o will_v be_v unwise_a also_o and_o therefore_o 6._o last_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o that_o description_n that_o we_o meet_v with_o of_o it_o in_o god_n word_n do_v full_o assure_v we_o that_o he_o have_v no_o such_o design_n in_o his_o counsel_n as_o to_o throw_v away_o his_o law_n to_o gratify_v his_o enemy_n with_o impunity_n from_o all_o which_o reason_n and_o as_o god_n do_v in_o the_o gospel_n promise_v pardon_n of_o sin_n there_o must_v be_v some_o previous_a condition_n that_o must_v be_v observe_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n and_o what_o share_v our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o performance_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o such_o condition_n we_o shall_v learn_v hereafter_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n before_o we_o dismiss_v this_o chapter_n we_o must_v not_o dissemble_v that_o it_o may_v be_v surmise_v and_o therefore_o also_o that_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o though_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o alsolute_a gospel-pardon_a that_o yet_o there_o may_v be_v a_o arbitrary_a gospel-pardon_a and_o that_o there_o be_v some_o expression_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o lean_a that_o way_n and_o may_v at_o least_o incline_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n but_o because_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o pardon_n can_v come_v from_o god_n but_o what_o be_v just_a and_o because_o we_o know_v that_o arbitrary_a justice_n be_v only_o one_o branch_n of_o arbitrary_a power_n and_o therefore_o be_v in_o reality_n no_o justice_n at_o all_o for_o it_o be_v only_o a_o resolute_a determination_n of_o the_o will_n without_o any_o reason_n for_o such_o determination_n therefore_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v belong_v to_o god_n for_o all_o his_o action_n be_v limit_v and_o bound_v by_o his_o holiness_n that_o be_v by_o the_o eternal_a rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n and_o he_o only_o therefore_o will_v what_o he_o please_v because_o he_o neither_o do_v not_o can_n please_v to_o will_v any_o require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o holiness_n negative_o the_o several_a way_n how_o such_o expiation_n can_v be_v make_v from_o whence_o a_o inference_n of_o the_o doctrine_n assert_v with_o some_o practical_a inference_n have_v in_o the_o first_o chapter_n make_v it_o good_a that_o misery_n and_o death_n that_o be_v in_o one_o word_n that_o vengeance_n be_v as_o the_o just_a so_o also_o the_o necessary_a wage_n of_o sin_n and_o in_o the_o second_o that_o the_o gospel_n itself_o hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o either_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n our_o next_o proposition_n must_v be_v that_o because_o the_o gospel_n in_o this_o very_a case_n be_v the_o revelation_n of_o god_n will_n and_o because_o the_o will_n and_o counsel_n of_o god_n in_o that_o gospel_n reveal_v be_v the_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n that_o therefore_o man_n sin_n be_v to_o be_v pardon_v though_o not_o by_o a_o absolute_a or_o arbitrary_a forgiveness_n and_o then_o because_o it_o must_v for_o that_o reason_n be_v pardon_v some_o way_n or_o other_o it_o will_v be_v our_o next_o business_n to_o inquire_v what_o that_o way_n be_v for_o by_o such_o enquiry_n it_o may_v perhaps_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o gospel-truth_n and_o that_o too_o agreeable_a to_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o salvation_n in_o any_o other_o but_o in_o jesus_n christ_n alone_o and_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n under_o heaven_n give_v among_o man_n whereby_o we_o must_v be_v save_v and_o here_o because_o the_o gospel_n promise_v no_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o we_o do_v from_o thence_o in_o the_o first_o place_n conclude_v that_o the_o pardon_n must_v be_v conditional_a so_o we_o must_v in_o the_o next_o place_n inquire_v what_o that_o condition_n or_o what_o those_o condition_n be_v upon_o which_o this_o pardon_n be_v to_o be_v obtain_v now_o if_o in_o order_n to_o our_o more_o rational_a and_o satisfactory_a resolution_n of_o this_o enquiry_n we_o do_v first_o look_v into_o the_o gospel_n there_o to_o inform_v ourselves_o what_o a_o gospel-salvation_n mean_n we_o may_v from_o thence_o learn_v that_o it_o do_v contain_v in_o it_o two_o thing_n whereof_o the_o first_o be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o the_o second_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o eternal_a happiness_n and_o in_o order_n to_o the_o obtain_n of_o these_o two_o thing_n as_o we_o shall_v see_v more_o full_o in_o the_o far_a prosecution_n of_o this_o matter_n two_o other_a thing_n be_v in_o the_o gospel_n require_v 1._o a_o expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o 2._o a_o restitution_n to_o our_o lose_a holiness_n for_o as_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o second_o proposition_n that_o though_o the_o gospel_n do_v allow_v a_o pardon_n yet_o because_o it_o do_v not_o allow_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n that_o therefore_o something_o will_v be_v require_v in_o order_n to_o such_o a_o pardon_n so_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o our_o first_o proposition_n that_o because_o punishment_n for_o sin_n be_v necessary_a therefore_o some_o punishment_n be_v that_o what_o it_o will_v at_o present_a must_v be_v suffer_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o then_o if_o in_o the_o progress_n of_o our_o discourse_n it_o shall_v appear_v that_o in_o consideration_n of_o any_o such_o punishment_n so_o suffer_v the_o gospel-pardon_a of_o our_o sin_n do_v afterward_o ensue_v then_o such_o pardon_n may_v be_v so_o far_o ascribe_v to_o such_o punishment_n as_o that_o our_o gild_n and_o the_o vengeance_n due_a to_o such_o our_o gild_n may_v be_v true_o esteem_v to_o be_v expiate_v by_o it_o now_o in_o order_n to_o find_v out_o what_o punishment_n it_o be_v that_o can_v make_v such_o a_o expiation_n we_o shall_v first_o inquire_v what_o punishment_n can_v do_v it_o and_o because_o repentance_n do_v not_o so_o whole_o consist_v in_o action_n but_o that_o it_o must_v have_v something_o of_o suffer_v mix_v with_o it_o therefore_o in_o pursuit_n of_o our_o design_n let_v our_o first_o negative_a proposition_n be_v this_o 1._o that_o our_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n can_v never_o make_v out_o a_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n for_o though_o repentance_n for_o our_o sin_n be_v a_o gospel-condition_n require_v of_o we_o without_o which_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel-expiation_n yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v by_o our_o repentance_n make_v out_o that_o expiation_n for_o sin_n which_o be_v by_o the_o gospel_n necessary_a for_o our_o salvation_n for_o beside_o that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n repentance_n so_o exact_a and_o complete_a as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o all_o sin_n while_o he_o live_v and_o so_o after_o all_o he_o must_v remain_v a_o sinner_n as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v i_o say_v beside_o that_o his_o very_a manner_n of_o go_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o be_v by_o death_n be_v a_o demonstrative_a proof_n that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o his_o sin_n because_o we_o may_v most_o certain_o conclude_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o then_o expiate_v and_o so_o neither_o pardon_v when_o god_n himself_o lay_v on_o the_o penalty_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n for_o when_o god_n give_v his_o law_n to_o mankind_n in_o their_o universal_a father_n and_o representative_a adam_n we_o know_v that_o he_o ratify_v such_o law_n by_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n and_o we_o know_v also_o that_o every_o man_n let_v he_o be_v as_o pemtent_a as_o can_v be_v suppose_v do_v still_o suffer_v that_o penalty_n and_o we_o may_v from_o thence_o also_o know_v that_o for_o that_o reason_n no_o man_n repentance_n can_v so_o far_o expiate_v his_o sin_n as_o to_o free_v he_o from_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v to_o it_o by_o the_o law_n and_o then_o from_o the_o whole_a we_o may_v conclude_v that_o if_o any_o man_n be_v save_v because_o he_o be_v a_o true_a penitent_n he_o must_v be_v save_v by_o some_o other_o expiation_n than_o by_o such_o his_o repentance_n forasmuch_o as_o his_o repentance_n can_v at_o the_o most_o but_o qualify_v he_o to_o be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o such_o expiation_n 2._o as_o man_n repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o voluntary_a punishment_n for_o sin_n can_v so_o neither_o can_v his_o profess_a punishment_n which_o we_o may_v call_v his_o legal_a punishment_n for_o sin_n expiate_v his_o sin_n and_o so_o
too_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o that_o creature_n so_o different_a shall_v be_v under_o different_a law_n and_o that_o therefore_o neither_o their_o obedience_n to_o nor_o their_o transgression_n of_o those_o several_a law_n under_o which_o they_o be_v shall_v have_v any_o such_o concern_v or_o relation_n to_o one_o another_o as_o that_o one_o sort_n of_o creature_n shall_v in_o any_o case_n undergo_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o other_o sort_n of_o creature_n and_o therefore_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n that_o we_o shall_v look_v upon_o it_o as_o absurd_a and_o unjust_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o a_o angel_n i_o say_v for_o the_o same_o reason_n we_o shall_v think_v it_o no_o less_o absurd_a and_o leave_v by_o the_o way_n to_o give_v perspicuity_n and_o strength_n to_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n by_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n as_o that_o redemption_n be_v express_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n will_v appear_v from_o these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o and_o first_o our_o saviour_n who_o by_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n undertake_v the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n be_v as_o real_o and_o very_o a_o man_n himself_o as_o be_v those_o who_o he_o undertake_v to_o redeem_v this_o be_v evident_a because_o he_o be_v all_o along_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n call_v man_n the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o the_o like_a as_o we_o have_v make_v it_o out_o already_o and_o this_o so_o far_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n salvation_n to_o the_o law_n that_o 1._o as_o the_o law_n threaten_v the_o punishment_n to_o man_n alone_o and_o to_o no_o other_o creature_n so_o in_o the_o purchase_n of_o the_o redemption_n man_n alone_o suffer_v such_o punishment_n and_o no_o creature_n beside_o 2._o and_o second_o as_o it_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n to_o the_o law_n because_o our_o saviour_n who_o suffer_v in_o order_n to_o such_o purchase_n be_v a_o man_n so_o it_o accommodate_v the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n because_o our_o saviour_n who_o suffer_v in_o order_n to_o such_o purchase_n be_v a_o innocent_a man._n it_o may_v perhaps_o at_o first_o sight_n look_v strange_a when_o i_o say_v that_o the_o purchase_n of_o redemption_n by_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n be_v accommodate_v to_o the_o rule_n of_o justice_n but_o the_o wonder_n will_v then_o vanish_v when_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o make_v it_o out_o that_o though_o a_o innocent_a man_n can_v without_o his_o own_o consent_n be_v just_o punish_v yet_o that_o with_o such_o his_o consent_n he_o may_v be_v so_o punish_v but_o because_o that_o belong_v to_o another_o place_n therefore_o in_o this_o i_o pass_v it_o by_o for_o that_o that_o i_o design_n at_o present_a be_v only_o to_o show_v that_o it_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n that_o a_o criminal_a against_o the_o law_n shall_v expiate_v another_o man_n sin_n by_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n because_o the_o penalty_n which_o he_o suffer_v be_v the_o just_a demerit_n and_o wage_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n he_o can_v by_o undergo_a the_o punishment_n of_o his_o own_o sin_n add_v any_o such_o desert_n to_o such_o his_o punishment_n as_o to_o make_v it_o meritorious_a of_o impunity_n to_o any_o other_o sinner_n as_o therefore_o under_o the_o last_o head_n we_o learn_v that_o he_o who_o by_o his_o punishment_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o another_o man_n must_v in_o reason_n and_o congruity_n be_v a_o man_n himself_o so_o under_o this_o head_n we_o may_v learn_v that_o he_o must_v be_v a_o innocent_a man_n likewise_o and_o so_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n will_v afford_v we_o a_o further_a congruity_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n in_o that_o that_o saviour_n be_v exhibit_v to_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n not_o only_o to_o be_v a_o man_n but_o also_o to_o be_v a_o innocent_a man._n 3._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reasonableness_n of_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n by_o the_o suffering_n and_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n as_o that_o saviour_n be_v a_o man_n will_v yet_o far_o and_o more_o notorious_o appear_v if_o we_o consider_v the_o first_o rise_n and_o formation_n of_o mankind_n according_a to_o that_o account_n which_o the_o scripture_n give_v we_o of_o it_o for_o there_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o general_a that_o god_n do_v of_o one_o blood_n make_v all_o nation_n of_o man_n for_o to_o dwell_v on_o the_o face_n of_o the_o whole_a earth_n in_o the_o seventeen_o chapter_n of_o the_o act_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o then_o if_o we_o look_v back_o to_o the_o original_a creation_n of_o mankind_n and_o there_o inquire_v more_o particular_o how_o this_o be_v do_v we_o shall_v from_o thence_o be_v inform_v that_o god_n first_o make_v adam_n out_o of_o the_o earth_n and_o that_o after_o that_o he_o make_v eve_n out_o of_o adam_n both_o of_o they_o extraordinary_a and_o miraculous_a production_n and_o that_o then_o through_o all_o succeed_a generation_n he_o form_v all_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n out_o of_o both_o or_o such_o succeed_a pair_n which_o proceed_v from_o both_o to_o a_o understand_a man_n as_o miraculous_a though_o a_o more_o ordinary_a production_n than_o that_o of_o the_o first_o man_n and_o woman_n so_o that_o all_o mankind_n be_v by_o the_o scripture-account_a of_o the_o thing_n a_o continue_a propagation_n of_o the_o blood_n of_o adam_n branch_v out_o through_o the_o several_a dissemination_n of_o all_o succeed_a man_n and_o woman_n from_o his_o day_n to_o this_o present_a time_n now_o our_o saviour_n as_o he_o be_v man_n take_v part_n of_o this_o flesh_n and_o blood_n so_o the_o scripture_n and_o by_o do_v so_o become_v a_o part_n of_o that_o common_a blood_n out_o of_o which_o all_o the_o particular_a man_n in_o the_o world_n be_v and_o always_o have_v be_v make_v as_o well_o as_o he_o he_o stand_v therefore_o in_o as_o near_o a_o relation_n to_o all_o mankind_n as_o can_v possible_o be_v make_v by_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n and_o that_o relation_n may_v well_o be_v grant_v to_o be_v very_o near_o because_o it_o be_v that_o very_a relation_n which_o the_o several_a part_n of_o a_o thing_n by_o continue_a derivation_n the_o same_o have_v to_o one_o another_o and_o so_o far_o the_o relation_n of_o our_o saviour_n to_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n be_v in_o all_o circumstance_n exact_o the_o same_o with_o that_o relation_n which_o every_o other_o man_n have_v to_o every_o other_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v something_o peculiar_a to_o our_o saviour_n in_o his_o become_a man_n out_o of_o the_o woman_n and_o according_o the_o first_o promise_n of_o redemption_n that_o god_n give_v to_o adam_n after_o he_o have_v sin_v be_v prophetical_o word_v when_o he_o tell_v he_o that_o the_o seed_n of_o the_o woman_n shall_v break_v the_o serpent_n head_n and_o therefore_o as_o adam_n be_v in_o the_o scripture_n call_v the_o first_o man_n because_o he_o be_v form_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n so_o our_o saviour_n be_v call_v the_o second_o man_n in_o the_o same_o scripture_n because_o he_o be_v form_v out_o of_o the_o woman_n that_o be_v he_o be_v the_o first_o man_n after_o his_o kind_a as_o adam_n be_v in_o he_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n and_o design_n then_o as_o we_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n that_o god_n counsel_n and_o merciful_a purpose_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n be_v very_o early_o for_o that_o counsel_n must_v needs_o be_v so_o that_o be_v in_o a_o manner_n cotemporary_a to_o man_n first_o sin_n as_o the_o immediate_a discovery_n of_o that_o counsel_n to_o man_n upon_o the_o commission_n of_o that_o sin_n do_v make_v it_o appear_v so_o some_o glimpse_n of_o that_o counsel_n do_v to_o i_o seem_v to_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o the_o scripture-account_a of_o man_n creation_n for_o when_o god_n tell_v we_o in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o have_v so_o order_v the_o creation_n propagation_n and_o dissemination_n of_o mankind_n that_o though_o their_o number_n be_v to_o we_o innumerable_a yet_o we_o do_v for_o all_o
that_o know_v that_o they_o all_o come_v from_o one_o single_a fountain_n that_o be_v from_o one_o single_a man_n and_o so_o that_o they_o be_v all_o but_o so_o many_o rivulet_n from_o that_o fountain_n and_o when_o moreover_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o our_o saviour_n be_v one_o of_o those_o rivulet_n for_o though_o our_o saviour_n be_v only_o to_o be_v make_v of_o the_o woman_n yet_o because_o the_o woman_n be_v make_v out_o of_o the_o man_n therefore_o our_o saviour_n do_v by_o the_o woman_n derive_v from_o the_o same_o one_o single_a person_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o mankind_n i_o say_v when_o we_o consider_v all_o this_o methinks_v it_o be_v no_o hard_a matter_n to_o conceive_v that_o god_n himself_o do_v in_o his_o word_n lie_v the_o groundwork_n of_o man_n redemption_n by_o a_o saviour_n if_o i_o may_v be_v allow_v so_o to_o word_n myself_o in_o that_o near_a and_o intimate_a relation_n which_o our_o saviour_n by_o become_a man_n have_v to_o all_o mankind_n beside_o and_o that_o the_o intimacy_n of_o such_o relation_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o the_o saviour_n and_o all_o mankind_n do_v derive_v from_o one_o single_a and_o common_a fountain_n and_o hence_o we_o be_v tell_v in_o one_o place_n that_o as_o by_o man_n come_v death_n there_o be_v the_o sin_n of_o adam_n and_o the_o wage_n of_o such_o sin_n by_o man_n come_v also_o the_o resurrection_n of_o the_o dead_a there_o be_v the_o redemption_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o purchase_n and_o more_o express_o still_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n speak_v the_o same_o apostle_n in_o the_o same_o chapter_n the_o fifteen_o of_o the_o first_o to_o the_o corinthian_n for_o as_o in_o adam_n all_o die_v so_o in_o christ_n shall_v all_o be_v make_v alive_a and_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n again_o in_o the_o five_o to_o the_o roman_n and_o the_o eighteen_o verse_n therefore_o as_o by_o the_o offence_n of_o one_o judgement_n come_v upon_o all_o man_n to_o condemnation_n even_o so_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o one_o the_o free-gift_n come_v upon_o all_o man_n unto_o justification_n of_o life_n in_o all_o which_o text_n and_o several_a other_o that_o may_v be_v name_v it_o be_v notorious_a that_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n be_v so_o ascribe_v to_o the_o second_o adam_n the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n as_o the_o sin_n and_o death_n of_o mankind_n be_v ascribe_v to_o the_o first_o man_n adam_n and_o i_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n but_o that_o those_o hint_n which_o the_o scripture_n do_v frequent_o offer_v to_o we_o of_o our_o saviour_n take_v the_o humane_a nature_n in_o order_n to_o our_o redemption_n of_o his_o take_a part_n of_o the_o same_o flesh_n and_o blood_n with_o we_o of_o his_o be_v our_o brother_n and_o the_o like_a i_o say_v i_o do_v not_o at_o all_o question_n but_o that_o when_o serious_o consider_v they_o may_v mighty_o assist_v and_o facilitate_v both_o our_o conception_n and_o belief_n of_o the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o our_o saviour_n incarnation_n death_n resurrection_n in_o one_o word_n of_o that_o redemption_n which_o he_o by_o be_v make_v one_o with_o mankind_n by_o take_v their_o nature_n upon_o himself_o have_v purchase_v form_n they_o and_o may_v mighty_o conduce_v to_o the_o remove_n of_o those_o difficulty_n which_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n have_v throw_v as_o so_o many_o stumbling-block_n in_o the_o way_n of_o plain_a and_o honest_a christian_n 4._o the_o wisdom_n justice_n reasonableness_n and_o congruity_n of_o our_o saviour_n incarnation_n in_o order_n to_o his_o purchase_n of_o man_n redemption_n do_v yet_o far_o appear_v in_o that_o by_o become_a man_n he_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o capacity_n of_o suffer_a death_n that_o be_v of_o suffer_v that_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n have_v denounce_v against_o those_o that_o shall_v transgress_v it_o for_o it_o be_v a_o gross_a mistake_n and_o do_v indeed_o bring_v a_o scandal_n upon_o god_n veracity_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o threaten_v great_a vengeance_n in_o any_o law_n before_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o than_o he_o will_v execute_v after_o the_o transgression_n that_o so_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o prevent_v such_o transgression_n for_o god_n never_o yet_o threaten_v any_o peremptory_a and_o unconditional_a punishment_n in_o any_o law_n which_o he_o have_v not_o or_o when_o the_o time_n come_v he_o will_v not_o as_o certain_o execute_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v say_v god_n the_o threaten_v we_o see_v be_v peremptory_a and_o the_o execution_n we_o find_v be_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o all_o sinner_n die_v and_o i_o can_v in_o the_o least_o doubt_n but_o that_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n a_o eternal_a punishment_n will_v be_v the_o certain_a vengeance_n upon_o a_o final_a impenitence_n but_o that_o be_v not_o so_o direct_v to_o my_o present_a purpose_n and_o therefore_o here_o i_o pass_v it_o by_o but_o to_o confirm_v what_o i_o be_o now_o upon_o i_o say_v that_o god_n do_v not_o pardon_v the_o death_n threaten_v in_o his_o law_n against_o sin_n no_o not_o in_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o his_o death_n and_o that_o too_o in_o our_o stead_n we_o see_v that_o all_o man_n and_o even_o those_o who_o hope_v for_o salvation_n by_o such_o his_o death_n do_v yet_o die_v what_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n in_o this_o case_n have_v puchase_v for_o we_o be_v not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o death_n and_o therefore_o that_o redemption_n from_o death_n which_o be_v the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n be_v to_o be_v accomplish_v after_o we_o have_v be_v dead_a by_o a_o resurrection_n a_o resurrection_n than_o be_v to_o make_v good_a the_o purchase_n of_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o his_o death_n purchase_v for_o we_o not_o a_o freedom_n but_o a_o release_n from_o our_o death_n by_o such_o resurrection_n now_o as_o his_o death_n be_v necessary_a for_o such_o a_o purchase_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o such_o his_o death_n and_o he_o be_v therefore_o make_v of_o the_o same_o blood_n with_o all_o mankind_n that_o by_o shed_v that_o blood_n for_o mankind_n he_o may_v after_o his_o own_o resurrection_n restore_v the_o life_n of_o all_o man_n which_o have_v be_v forfeit_v by_o adam_n transgression_n so_o that_o as_o his_o death_n be_v the_o meritorious_a expiation_n of_o sin_n and_o as_o a_o resurrection_n be_v the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o such_o his_o expiation_n so_o his_o incarnation_n be_v a_o necessary_a forerunner_n of_o such_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o before_o he_o can_v possible_o die_v for_o man_n and_o so_o purchase_v a_o redemption_n of_o man_n from_o death_n it_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n that_o he_o shall_v become_v man_n himself_o but_o then_o how_o his_o death_n come_v to_o be_v of_o so_o valuable_a a_o price_n as_o to_o make_v so_o glorious_a a_o purchase_n we_o must_v leave_v to_o far_a enquiry_n for_o by_o that_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o as_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v die_v the_o death_n of_o a_o man_n so_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o such_o his_o humanity_n shall_v be_v unite_v to_o the_o divinity_n and_o by_o both_o it_o will_v appear_v that_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n to_o destroy_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o that_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o so_o much_o they_o tell_v we_o no_o more_o than_o what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o reason_n chap._n vi_o the_o divinity_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n necessary_a for_o the_o expitation_n of_o man_n sin_n as_o well_o as_o his_o humanity_n some_o doctrinal_a inference_n a_o general_a proof_n that_o as_o our_o saviour_n do_v actual_o die_v so_o that_o he_o may_v just_o die_v for_o the_o expiation_n of_o sin_n have_v therefore_o see_v that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n be_v qualify_v by_o his_o incarnation_n to_o make_v a_o expiation_n for_o sin_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o himself_o and_o that_o such_o his_o qualification_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o law_n of_o justice_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n and_o wisdom_n our_o next_o enquiry_n must_v be_v how_o such_o his_o sacrifice_n come_v to_o be_v of_o such_o a_o value_n as_o to_o be_v just_o sufficient_a to_o make_v good_a such_o a_o expiation_n for_o because_o the_o death_n of_o a_o innocent_a man_n if_o he_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man_n be_v but_o the_o death_n of_o a_o creature_n and_o because_o no_o creature_n can_v by_o its_o punishment_n in_o another_o creature_n be_v stead_n expiate_v the_o sin_n of_o that_o other_o creature_n for_o if_o it_o can_v than_o a_o creature_n may_v by_o its_o own_o punishment_n
if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v absolute_o just_a and_o necessary_a then_o how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o god_n do_v in_o his_o counsel_n design_n and_o in_o his_o wisdom_n appoint_v a_o saviour_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n for_o in_o order_n of_o nature_n the_o design_n of_o pardon_n must_v be_v antecedent_n to_o thâ—_n design_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n be_v as_o it_o be_v laâ—_n down_o both_o just_a and_o necessary_a god_n design_n of_o pardon_n go_v counter_a to_o this_o law_n shall_v seem_v to_o be_v unjust_a for_o how_o can_v he_o justâ—_n design_n to_o pardon_v that_o which_o in_o justice_n anâ—_n necessity_n he_o stand_v oblige_v to_o punish_v now_o to_o this_o several_a thing_n may_v be_v answer_v as_o 1._o first_o that_o god_n do_v never_o design_n 〈◊〉_d pardon_n sin_n but_o only_o in_o and_o through_o a_o saviour_n and_o how_o far_o such_o his_o design_n undeâ—_n such_o a_o restriction_n and_o limitation_n be_v juâ—â—_n be_v very_o much_o the_o business_n of_o that_o part_n of_o thâ—_n discourse_n which_o in_o its_o place_n be_v to_o follow_v anâ—_n therefore_o must_v not_o be_v forestall_v here_o 2._o that_o notwithstanding_o a_o saviour_n yeâ—_n god_n do_v never_o pardon_v any_o sinful_a creature_n all_o the_o sinner_n that_o we_o know_v be_v the_o falâ—_n angel_n and_o men._n what_o the_o scripture_n acquaint_v we_o with_o concern_v the_o first_o we_o know_v well_o enough_o and_o among_o such_o thing_n 〈◊〉_d know_v also_o that_o it_o give_v we_o a_o account_n 〈◊〉_d the_o punishment_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o as_o foâ—_n man_n those_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v save_v aâ—_n last_o in_o consideration_n of_o their_o saviour_n merit_n do_v yet_o in_o this_o world_n suffer_v loss_n anâ—_n cross_n and_o pain_n and_o disease_n and_o death_n all_o which_o be_v undoubted_a punishment_n of_o sinâ—_n and_o for_o the_o rest_n who_o shall_v by_o a_o final_a impenitence_n reject_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o saviour_n purchase_n beside_o the_o calamity_n which_o they_o suffer_v in_o common_a with_o the_o good_a in_o this_o world_n the_o scripture_n do_v acquaint_v we_o sufficient_o with_o their_o doom_n in_o the_o next_o so_o that_o if_o it_o may_v be_v a_o argument_n that_o punishment_n be_v the_o necessary_a reward_n of_o sin_n because_o all_o sinner_n have_v do_v and_o shall_v suffer_v punishment_n then_o god_n design_v of_o a_o saviour_n for_o mankind_n in_o order_n to_o their_o pardon_n do_v not_o take_v off_o the_o force_n of_o such_o argument_n because_o notwithstanding_o such_o his_o design_n and_o such_o saviour_n no_o sinner_n whatsoever_o do_v or_o ever_o will_v go_v unpunished_a 3._o but_o then_o three_o it_o be_v a_o mistake_n that_o the_o salvation_n of_o man_n from_o punishment_n be_v the_o immediate_a and_o direct_a design_n in_o god_n counsel_n of_o send_v a_o saviour_n for_o as_o we_o shall_v see_v hereafter_o see_v chap._n 12._o the_o business_n of_o our_o saviour_n come_v be_v to_o bring_v back_o mankind_n to_o his_o father_n kingdom_n who_o have_v be_v draw_v into_o a_o revolt_n from_o his_o dominion_n and_o jurisdiction_n by_o the_o solicitation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o have_v thereby_o put_v a_o slight_a upon_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o king_n of_o all_o the_o world_n and_o so_o in_o some_o sense_n lessen_v the_o extent_n of_o his_o kingdom_n now_o those_o who_o our_o saviour_n shall_v so_o bring_v back_o to_o their_o allegiance_n by_o restore_v they_o to_o their_o lose_a holiness_n shall_v indeed_o be_v save_v but_o then_o their_o salvation_n be_v a_o consequence_n of_o their_o return_n to_o holiness_n and_o so_o be_v not_o proper_o the_o design_n of_o god_n send_v a_o saviour_n but_o the_o consequence_n of_o the_o success_n of_o such_o design_n chap._n ii_o the_o gospel_n hold_v forth_o no_o such_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a or_o unconditional_a pardon_n no_o nor_o yet_o a_o arbitrary_a pardon_n the_o next_o and_o second_o proposition_n offer_v to_o be_v make_v good_a in_o order_n to_o our_o main_a design_n be_v this_o that_o the_o gospel_n hold_v out_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o we_o as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n of_o sin_n which_o proposition_n i_o therefore_o lie_v down_o here_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v introductive_a to_o some_o thing_n which_o be_v to_o follow_v but_o also_o to_o obviate_v the_o conceit_n of_o those_o man_n who_o think_v they_o do_v sufficient_o wipe_v away_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n may_v without_o any_o more_o ado_n pardon_v such_o our_o sin_n by_o his_o free_a grace_n 1._o but_o in_o the_o first_o place_n we_o can_v but_o take_v notice_n that_o what_o god_n may_v do_v and_o what_o he_o have_v declare_v he_o will_v do_v be_v two_o very_a different_a and_o distinct_a thing_n though_o therefore_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o god_n may_v grant_v we_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n yet_o if_o in_o those_o very_a revelation_n in_o which_o he_o have_v discover_v to_o we_o his_o intention_n of_o pardon_v we_o he_o do_v express_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v so_o it_o will_v be_v proper_a and_o modest_a in_o we_o to_o acquiesce_v in_o what_o he_o so_o tell_v we_o rather_o than_o to_o raise_v in_o our_o imagination_n conceit_a possibility_n which_o do_v direct_o contradict_v such_o his_o declaration_n 2._o but_o second_o he_o who_o bring_v we_o the_o gospel-dispensation_n in_o order_n to_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n do_v in_o that_o dispensation_n require_v our_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o such_o our_o pardon_n now_o if_o repentance_n be_v a_o condition_n of_o the_o pardon_n then_o for_o that_o reason_n alone_o the_o pardon_n can_v be_v absolute_a because_o a_o absolute_a pardon_n be_v a_o inconditional_a pardon_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o same_o pardon_n shall_v be_v a_o conditional_a and_o a_o inconditional_a pardon_n too_o 3._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n of_o sin_n fight_v direct_o against_o all_o that_o we_o have_v say_v under_o our_o last_o head_n concern_v the_o necessary_a justice_n of_o punishment_n and_o therefore_o till_o all_o that_o be_v wipe_v away_o we_o may_v upon_o those_o ground_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o sort_n of_o pardon_n for_o it_o look_v a_o little_a too_o harsh_a and_o that_o too_o to_o natural_a reason_n to_o tell_v we_o that_o god_n will_v be_v reconcile_v to_o the_o enemy_n of_o his_o nature_n and_o that_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o mere_a mercy_n and_o compassion_n and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o his_o be_v so_o he_o will_v throw_v away_o all_o consideration_n of_o his_o justice_n which_o in_o this_o case_n we_o may_v adventure_v to_o call_v his_o natural_a displeasure_n 4._o if_o we_o shall_v suppose_v or_o allow_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n then_o we_o must_v also_o allow_v that_o it_o may_v be_v the_o same_o thing_n whether_o a_o man_n have_v be_v the_o best_a or_o the_o worst_a man_n in_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o a_o absolute_a forgiveness_n in_o the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v extend_v to_o the_o one_o as_o to_o the_o other_o for_o let_v what_o reason_n soever_o be_v assign_v why_o it_o may_v not_o and_o that_o very_a reason_n be_v it_o what_o it_o will_v will_v prove_v the_o forgiveness_n not_o to_o be_v absolute_a for_o that_o forgiveness_n can_v be_v so_o that_o be_v limit_v or_o restrain_v by_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o 5._o a_o absolute_a pardon_n do_v throw_v a_o slur_n upon_o god_n wisdom_n no_o less_o than_o it_o do_v so_o upon_o his_o justice_n for_o the_o law_n be_v his_o against_o which_o we_o have_v transgress_v and_o he_o have_v in_o that_o very_a law_n threaten_v vengeance_n upon_o such_o as_o shall_v transgress_v it_o if_o after_o the_o transgression_n he_o shall_v grant_v a_o absolute_a pardon_n to_o such_o transgression_n he_o will_v by_o such_o a_o pardon_n as_o much_o void_a and_o annul_v the_o law_n as_o he_o have_v by_o his_o threaten_v establish_v and_o confirm_v it_o and_o so_o it_o may_v come_v to_o the_o same_o pass_n as_o to_o the_o final_a event_n whether_o he_o have_v make_v any_o law_n or_o no._n for_o what_o be_v the_o difference_n not_o to_o make_v a_o law_n and_o not_o to_o execute_v it_o and_o therefore_o st._n paul_n pointblank_o to_o our_o purpose_n tell_v we_o in_o the_o three_o to_o the_o roman_n the_o fifth_z and_o six_o verse_n that_o if_o god_n shall_v not_o execute_v vengeance_n he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o that_o also_o he_o can_v not_o judge_v the_o world_n and_o we_o may_v add_v that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o be_v unrighteous_a but_o consider_v the_o contrariety_n that_o will_v be_v between_o his_o practice_n
world_n be_v restore_v to_o that_o holiness_n which_o be_v lose_v by_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o law_n and_o because_o no_o man_n shall_v be_v complete_o and_o actual_o justify_v till_o he_o be_v so_o restore_v 2._o because_o the_o expiation_n of_o our_o sin_n by_o our_o saviour_n and_o by_o consequence_n the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n by_o god_n be_v not_o absolute_a but_o conditional_a and_o because_o some_o of_o those_o condition_n upon_o which_o such_o pardon_n do_v depend_v be_v to_o be_v perform_v by_o we_o such_o be_v our_o repentance_n conversion_n and_o the_o like_a and_o because_o last_o our_o condition_n in_o this_o world_n be_v such_o that_o there_o will_v of_o necessity_n be_v require_v time_n for_o our_o performance_n of_o such_o condition_n therefore_o we_o do_v conclude_v that_o as_o our_o saviour_n have_v purchase_v for_o we_o such_o condition_n in_o order_n to_o our_o redemption_n so_o have_v he_o also_o purchase_v for_o we_o a_o long_a term_n in_o which_o we_o may_v perform_v such_o condition_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o denunciation_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o transgression_n of_o it_o be_v in_o the_o day_n thou_o eat_v thereof_o thou_o shall_v sure_o die_v and_o in_o strict_a justice_n and_o reason_n the_o punishment_n be_v then_o to_o be_v inflict_v when_o it_o become_v due_a and_o it_o then_o become_v due_a so_o soon_o as_o the_o law_n be_v break_v for_o be_v it_o not_o due_a then_o it_o will_v never_o become_v due_a at_o all_o now_o because_o we_o find_v and_o that_o too_o by_o experience_n that_o notwithstanding_o not_o only_a we_o sinner_n be_v reconcile_v to_o god_n by_o the_o suffering_n death_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n and_o so_o be_v pardon_v for_o our_o sin_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o if_o there_o be_v any_o injustice_n in_o the_o case_n that_o injustice_n must_v be_v either_o ascribe_v to_o god_n to_o our_o saviour_n or_o to_o ourselves_o now_o there_o can_v possible_o be_v any_o injustice_n in_o we_o because_o we_o be_v pure_o passive_a in_o the_o case_n for_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o we_o be_v forgive_v and_o that_o be_v as_o far_o as_o we_o be_v concern_v most_o certain_o we_o be_v so_o they_o who_o deny_v his_o expiation_n the_o purchase_n of_o his_o blood_n and_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n in_o
with_o god_n will_v yet_o in_o spite_n of_o these_o and_o a_o multitude_n of_o other_o express_a declaration_n to_o the_o contrary_a still_o allow_v our_o saviour_n to_o be_v no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a man._n now_o it_o be_v free_o confess_v that_o if_o the_o case_n be_v so_o than_o his_o single_a death_n will_v be_v no_o valuable_a compensation_n for_o the_o death_n of_o all_o the_o sinner_n of_o the_o person_n suffer_v must_v needs_o add_v a_o immense_a value_n to_o such_o his_o suffering_n and_o by_o so_o do_v must_v make_v they_o more_o than_o adequate_a to_o the_o gild_n of_o all_o mankind_n and_o though_o this_o of_o itself_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o the_o present_a objection_n yet_o if_o we_o do_v but_o recollect_v some_o few_o thing_n that_o have_v be_v speak_v to_o and_o make_v good_a already_o we_o may_v still_o be_v far_o satisfy_v that_o the_o objection_n against_o the_o value_n of_o his_o suffering_n in_o order_n to_o the_o expiation_n of_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n will_v be_v of_o no_o force_n at_o all_o if_o we_o do_v consider_v therefore_o that_o because_o our_o saviour_n take_v on_o he_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o angel_n that_o he_o do_v therefore_o die_v for_o man_n and_o not_o for_o angel_n if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o fall_v angel_n be_v leave_v without_o any_o hope_n of_o escape_n from_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o final_a judgement_n which_o man_n be_v not_o if_o we_o consider_v that_o the_o vengeance_n which_o the_o fall_a angel_n shall_v then_o suffer_v will_v never_o work_v out_o their_o redemption_n or_o forgiveness_n and_o that_o for_o that_o very_a reason_n because_o that_o vengeance_n shall_v be_v eternal_a if_o we_o consider_v that_o neither_o will_v eternal_a vengeance_n death_n of_o one_o and_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporal_a death_n neither_o yet_o will_v do_v that_o which_o all_o the_o eternal_a death_n in_o the_o world_n can_v not_o do_v that_o be_v it_o will_v reconcile_v sinner_n to_o god_n and_o from_o he_o obtain_v their_o pardon_n and_o that_o upon_o that_o single_a account_n it_o be_v of_o more_o value_n in_o his_o signt_n than_o the_o death_n he_o require_v that_o if_o our_o brother_n offend_v we_o we_o that_o be_v we_o the_o offend_v shall_v go_v and_o tell_v he_o his_o fault_n so_o that_o though_o the_o injury_n be_v do_v not_o by_o we_o but_o to_o we_o yet_o we_o must_v make_v the_o first_o step_v towards_o a_o reconciliation_n now_o a_o man_n of_o a_o worldly_a reason_n will_v in_o this_o case_n be_v apt_a to_o cry_v out_o what!_o must_v i_o begin_v to_o give_v myself_o satisfaction_n be_v this_o sense_n or_o justice_n do_v not_o he_o do_v the_o injury_n and_o be_v not_o the_o whole_a reparation_n to_o come_v from_o he_o but_o god_n thought_n be_v not_o as_o man_n thought_n nor_o his_o way_n as_o man_n way_n and_o therefore_o though_o your_o enemy_n begin_v the_o injury_n yet_o if_o he_o command_v you_o must_v begin_v the_o reconciliation_n and_o if_o god_n do_v not_o only_o begin_v the_o reconciliation_n in_o the_o case_n before_o we_o but_o also_o suffer_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v complete_a it_o all_o the_o inconvenience_n that_o will_v follow_v from_o it_o will_v be_v that_o god_n can_v do_v more_o than_o man_n for_o he_o can_v do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v not_o unjust_a and_o any_o thing_n that_o 2._o for_o second_o our_o saviour_n be_v as_o we_o have_v already_o make_v it_o out_o a_o middle_a person_n between_o god_n and_o man_n a_o mediator_n in_o his_o person_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o office_n as_o he_o be_v not_o so_o man_n but_o that_o he_o be_v god_n so_o he_o be_v not_o so_o god_n but_o that_o he_o be_v man._n and_o then_o if_o we_o add_v that_o as_o man_n he_o suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n so_o much_o may_v be_v allow_v now_o because_o so_o much_o have_v be_v prove_v already_o and_o indeed_o strict_o and_o close_o speak_v it_o be_v man_n not_o god_n who_o suffer_v in_o the_o person_n of_o our_o saviour_n for_o god_n we_o be_v sure_a be_v utter_o and_o in_o his_o own_o nature_n incapable_a of_o any_o such_o thing_n as_o that_o be_v which_o we_o call_v suffer_v so_o far_o forth_o therefore_o as_o the_o objection_n furmise_n that_o we_o take_v god_n to_o have_v suffer_v so_o far_o the_o objection_n be_v mistake_v and_o lay_v wrong_n but_o yet_o 3._o because_o god_n and_o man_n be_v personal_o
and_o because_o none_o but_o such_o who_o do_v so_o shall_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o gospel_n suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n therefore_o it_o be_v no_o objection_n against_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n death_n to_o say_v that_o his_o temporal_a death_n can_v expiate_v a_o eternal_a punishment_n because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o any_o such_o purpose_n and_o he_o do_v not_o do_v so_o because_o he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o alone_o shall_v suffer_v eternal_a punishment_n that_o be_v he_o do_v not_o suffer_v death_n for_o those_o who_o shall_v refuse_v and_o reject_v the_o only_a mean_n of_o salvation_n which_o he_o purchase_v for_o mankind_n by_o his_o death_n much_o more_o may_v be_v offer_v upon_o this_o occasion_n but_o this_o be_v that_o justice_n which_o concern_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n and_o if_o upon_o our_o neglect_n to_o follow_v such_o direction_n god_n do_v for_o any_o reason_n whatsoever_o forgive_v we_o the_o penalty_n which_o we_o incur_v by_o such_o our_o neglect_n and_o nothing_o more_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o by_o such_o a_o way_n of_o proceed_v all_o care_n of_o the_o directive_n do_v forgive_v those_o sin_n to_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v obey_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n upon_o the_o account_n that_o god_n do_v forgive_v we_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v in_o the_o law_n 2._o nor_o can_v we_o be_v so_o second_o because_o shall_v we_o undergo_v the_o punishment_n which_o the_o law_n threaten_v yet_o we_o can_v not_o by_o discourse_n and_o which_o because_o we_o have_v promise_v so_o to_o do_v we_o must_v now_o speak_v to_o apart_o and_o by_o themselves_o 1._o and_o first_o it_o be_v object_v against_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n righteousness_n that_o such_o his_o righteousness_n which_o be_v mean_v in_o the_o present_a case_n be_v his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n and_o that_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n do_v consist_v in_o the_o conformity_n of_o his_o action_n to_o the_o law_n his_o obedience_n therefore_o be_v lodge_v in_o his_o action_n unless_o his_o action_n can_v be_v make_v we_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o his_o obedience_n shall_v be_v so_o for_o so_o long_o as_o the_o action_n of_o one_o man_n be_v not_o the_o action_n of_o any_o other_o man_n so_o long_v it_o must_v and_o will_v be_v true_a that_o the_o obedience_n which_o be_v only_o pay_v by_o such_o action_n and_o which_o be_v therefore_o undoubted_o lodge_v in_o such_o action_n can_v be_v that_o other_o neither_o this_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o objection_n which_o may_v be_v put_v in_o more_o word_n but_o because_o i_o think_v the_o full_a force_n of_o it_o be_v sufficient_o express_v in_o what_o we_o have_v speak_v therefore_o it_o need_v not_o 1._o now_o in_o order_n to_o clear_v this_o matter_n we_o observe_v first_o that_o the_o right_n which_o one_o person_n have_v in_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v make_v over_o or_o transfer_v to_o another_o person_n by_o the_o delivery_n of_o such_o thing_n to_o he_o provide_v that_o he_o who_o deliver_v it_o do_v some_o way_n or_o other_o signify_v that_o it_o be_v his_o mind_n by_o such_o his_o delivery_n to_o transfer_v such_o his_o right_n where_o we_o must_v take_v notice_n of_o two_o thing_n first_o that_o bare_a delivery_n of_o the_o thing_n without_o such_o signification_n do_v not_o alter_v the_o right_n in_o such_o thing_n for_o in_o such_o case_n the_o thing_n be_v only_o transfer_v natural_o but_o not_o legal_o the_o right_a in_o it_o be_v not_o transfer_v with_o it_o take_v the_o thing_n in_o a_o instance_n a_o man_n put_v a_o purse_n of_o money_n into_o another_o man_n hand_n who_o stand_v by_o he_o to_o hold_v it_o in_o this_o case_n the_o purse_n and_o money_n be_v actual_o and_o natural_o transfer_v from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o but_o though_o it_o be_v natural_o transfer_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o for_o all_o that_o legal_o transfer_v for_o the_o alteration_n of_o the_o possession_n do_v not_o in_o the_o case_n alter_v the_o right_n and_o so_o though_o the_o money_n be_v remove_v from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o yet_o the_o propriety_n in_o the_o money_n be_v not_o on_o the_o other_o side_n one_o man_n by_o deed_n of_o gift_n or_o some_o other_o legal_a and_o sufficient_a conveyance_n make_v over_o his_o right_n in_o the_o purse_n of_o money_n to_o another_o but_o still_o keep_v the_o money_n in_o his_o own_o possession_n in_o such_o a_o case_n though_o the_o money_n be_v not_o natural_o or_o local_o call_v it_o which_o you_o please_v transfer_v or_o make_v over_o to_o that_o other_o yet_o it_o be_v legal_o so_o for_o though_o the_o possession_n remain_v in_o the_o donor_n yet_o the_o right_n be_v transfer_v to_o and_o therefore_o be_v in_o the_o donee_n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o this_o case_n be_v that_o that_o thing_n who_o right_a be_v transfer_v by_o delivery_n must_v be_v something_o which_o be_v capable_a as_o our_o law_n speak_v of_o manual_a occupation_n for_o though_o the_o right_n to_o some_o thing_n may_v be_v transfer_v by_o delivery_n yet_o the_o right_n to_o other_o can_v be_v so_o transfer_v 2._o second_o therefore_o the_o right_n in_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v transfer_v from_o one_o person_n to_o another_o by_o deed_n or_o any_o proper_a and_o legal_a instrument_n of_o conveyance_n there_o where_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n be_v such_o that_o the_o thing_n itself_o can_v be_v transfer_v by_o delivery_n and_o such_o a_o thing_n for_o instance_n be_v a_o privilege_n for_o we_o may_v bestow_v upon_o another_o a_o privilege_n which_o of_o right_o belong_v to_o ourselves_o and_o by_o so_o do_v may_v give_v he_o a_o right_n in_o such_o privilege_n though_o we_o can_v so_o put_v he_o in_o the_o possession_n of_o it_o as_o we_o can_v do_v of_o a_o ring_n or_o a_o garment_n such_o a_o thing_n then_o may_v be_v legal_o and_o rightful_o transfer_v to_o another_o though_o because_o it_o be_v not_o capable_a of_o manual_a occupation_n it_o can_v be_v transfer_v local_o or_o natural_o 3._o three_o where_o a_o thing_n not_o capable_a of_o manual_a occupation_n do_v so_o
other_o sort_n of_o natural_a philosophy_n they_o have_v be_v very_o well_o satisfy_v and_o content_v without_o that_o new_a and_o uncouth_a article_n of_o their_o christian_n faith_n other_o instance_n may_v be_v produce_v to_o show_v that_o gross_a foolery_n and_o corruption_n have_v creep_v into_o religion_n at_o this_o door_n whereas_o a_o due_a consideration_n that_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v a_o covenant_n and_o the_o treat_v of_o it_o as_o such_o will_v acquaint_v we_o much_o better_a with_o the_o nature_n and_o engage_v we_o more_o effectual_o to_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o but_o this_o useful_a remark_n be_v leave_v in_o this_o place_n we_o proceed_v 2._o the_o second_o objection_n therefore_o against_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o saviour_n obedience_n to_o believer_n in_o order_n to_o their_o obtain_v the_o promise_a reward_n of_o the_o covenant_n stand_v thus_o that_o suppose_v that_o our_o saviour_n do_v provide_v for_o the_o directive_n part_v of_o the_o law_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o that_o he_o do_v also_o fulfil_v the_o vindictive_a part_n by_o his_o death_n in_o such_o case_n there_o do_v therefore_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o superfluity_n in_o his_o provision_n because_o shall_v his_o obedience_n alone_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o we_o shall_v by_o that_o mean_n be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o then_o there_o have_v be_v no_o need_n of_o his_o death_n to_o expiate_v our_o sin_n because_o than_o we_o shall_v have_v have_v no_o sin_n to_o be_v expiate_v and_o that_o which_o may_v add_v some_o strength_n to_o what_o be_v thus_o allege_a be_v this_o that_o our_o saviour_n pay_v that_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n the_o obedience_n so_o pay_v be_v pay_v before_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o course_n of_o thing_n it_o shall_v seem_v that_o it_o may_v be_v impute_v before_o his_o death_n and_o in_o the_o course_n of_o justice_n without_o it_o for_o when_o by_o such_o imputation_n we_o be_v once_o entitle_v to_o his_o righteousness_n the_o plea_n of_o his_o death_n in_o order_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o happiness_n must_v needs_o be_v useless_a and_o superfluous_a now_o though_o it_o may_v seem_v indeed_o that_o thing_n may_v have_v go_v so_o if_o we_o only_o have_v a_o regard_v to_o the_o order_n of_o time_n yet_o if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o order_n of_o reason_n and_o justice_n we_o shall_v easy_o perceive_v that_o they_o can_v not_o for_o we_o can_v by_o any_o estimation_n of_o justice_n whatsoever_o be_v reckon_v righteous_a so_o long_o as_o our_o gild_n lie_v upon_o we_o and_o when_o once_o by_o our_o sin_n we_o have_v make_v ourselves_o guilty_a such_o gild_n must_v needs_o lie_v upon_o we_o till_o it_o be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o expiate_v now_o because_o we_o have_v already_o and_o full_o make_v it_o out_o that_o it_o neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v expiate_v any_o other_o way_n than_o by_o the_o death_n of_o our_o saviour_n therefore_o the_o death_n of_o such_o saviour_n must_v in_o the_o order_n of_o justice_n first_o expiate_v such_o our_o gild_n before_o we_o can_v possible_o be_v entitle_v to_o a_o perfect_a righteousness_n for_o who_o can_v put_v a_o clean_a thing_n into_o a_o unclean_a it_o be_v neither_o agreeable_a to_o the_o method_n of_o wisdom_n or_o justice_n so_o to_o do_v and_o therefore_o we_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o it_o can_v be_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o most_o wise_a and_o just_a god_n no_o we_o know_v well_o enough_o because_o we_o be_v tell_v so_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o our_o saviour_n first_o die_v for_o our_o sin_n and_o after_o that_o rose_n again_o for_o our_o justification_n and_o we_o know_v moreover_o that_o when_o god_n have_v once_o give_v forth_o his_o law_n though_o have_v a_o exact_a obedience_n be_v pay_v to_o it_o the_o vengeance_n of_o it_o which_o be_v only_o conditional_o threaten_v have_v never_o be_v execute_v for_o the_o justice_n and_o execution_n of_o such_o vengeance_n do_v entire_o depend_v upon_o our_o transgression_n yet_o after_o we_o have_v transgress_v the_o law_n the_o execution_n of_o such_o vengeance_n be_v as_o necessary_a as_o be_v the_o happiness_n promise_v if_o we_o have_v not_o transgress_v it_o for_o vengeance_n do_v by_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o law_n stand_v in_o the_o same_o relation_n to_o sin_n as_o happiness_n do_v to_o obedience_n the_o first_o become_v our_o due_a in_o case_n we_o neglect_v our_o duty_n the_o last_o in_o case_n we_o perform_v it_o and_o the_o distribution_n both_o of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o must_v as_o necessary_o follow_v upon_o our_o performance_n or_o non-performance_n of_o those_o condition_n to_o which_o each_o of_o they_o do_v stand_v respective_o engage_v as_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o god_n to_o love_v holiness_n and_o hate_v wickedness_n one_o part_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o be_v in_o justice_n to_o be_v provide_v for_o as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o and_o then_o if_o neither_o the_o punishment_n of_o man_n can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n nor_o the_o imperfect_a obedience_n of_o man_n on_o the_o other_o and_o if_o our_o saviour_n undertake_v for_o man_n sake_n to_o supply_v man_n defect_n then_o there_o be_v the_o same_o necessity_n in_o justice_n that_o he_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o vindictive_a part_n of_o it_o by_o his_o death_n that_o there_o be_v that_o he_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o directive_n part_v of_o it_o by_o his_o obedience_n and_o therefore_o as_o neither_o his_o obedience_n not_o his_o death_n have_v be_v necessary_a no_o nor_o his_o incarnation_n neither_o upon_o which_o such_o his_o death_n and_o such_o his_o obedience_n do_v depend_v but_o i_o say_v as_o neither_o his_o obedience_n nor_o his_o death_n have_v be_v necessary_a if_o man_n have_v obey_v the_o law_n himself_o so_o upon_o man_n transgression_n of_o the_o law_n they_o both_o become_v necessary_a because_o as_o we_o have_v already_o see_v man_n punishment_n be_v in_o justice_n as_o necessary_a upon_o his_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n as_o his_o obedience_n be_v upon_o god_n promulgation_n of_o the_o law_n and_o therefore_o when_o our_o saviour_n undertake_v to_o save_v sinful_a man_n that_o be_v man_z who_o have_v transgress_v the_o direction_n of_o the_o law_n and_o man_n who_o lie_v expose_v to_o the_o vengeance_n of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v necessary_a in_o order_n to_o his_o do_v so_o just_o that_o he_o shall_v have_v a_o regard_v to_o one_o part_n of_o the_o law_n as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o other_o that_o be_v that_o he_o shall_v fulfil_v the_o vindictive_a by_o his_o death_n and_o the_o directive_n by_o his_o obedience_n and_o have_v he_o not_o do_v both_o one_o part_n of_o the_o law_n at_o least_o have_v be_v neglect_v and_o so_o the_o redemption_n have_v not_o be_v just_o by_o which_o we_o may_v by_o this_o time_n understand_v that_o there_o be_v no_o superfluity_n in_o his_o provide_v for_o man_n salvation_n both_o by_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n and_o by_o the_o suffering_n of_o his_o death_n for_o that_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v account_v superfluous_a in_o the_o do_n of_o any_o thing_n whatsoever_o without_o which_o such_o thing_n can_v be_v do_v just_o now_o as_o in_o our_o answer_n to_o the_o former_a objection_n we_o make_v good_a not_o only_o the_o
