show_v that_o there_o be_v great_a temporal_a inconvenience_n in_o it_o that_o to_o observe_v such_o law_n in_o such_o a_o sense_n will_v be_v very_o injurious_a to_o man_n present_a interest_n and_o no_o dispute_v against_o experience_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o dangerous_a and_o fatal_a a_o neglect_n that_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o inquire_v into_o the_o cause_n and_o remedy_n of_o it_o for_o reason_n to_o expect_v such_o a_o indulgence_n for_o whatever_o their_o temptation_n be_v it_o be_v much_o easy_a for_o they_o to_o keep_v themselves_o innocent_a than_o it_o be_v for_o other_o man_n because_o they_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o forget_v it_o and_o yet_o they_o have_v very_o great_a occasion_n for_o it_o 1._o they_o be_v very_o apt_a to_o forget_v it_o their_o spirit_n be_v gay_a and_o brisk_a and_o they_o meet_v with_o such_o variety_n of_o entertainment_n as_o will_v not_o admit_v of_o
think_v they_o be_v safe_a to_o stumble_v and_o fall_v in_o the_o dark_a be_v a_o misfortune_n not_o a_o fault_n and_o will_v rather_o move_v pity_n and_o compassion_n than_o provoke_v revenge_n this_o make_v some_o man_n so_o regardless_o of_o knowledge_n they_o think_v god_n will_v judge_v they_o for_o no_o more_o than_o they_o know_v and_o all_o the_o good_a they_o be_v like_a to_o get_v by_o knowledge_n be_v to_o increase_v and_o aggravate_v their_o account_n i_o shall_v not_o enter_v into_o that_o dispute_n now_o which_o be_v nothing_o to_o our_o present_a purpose_n how_o far_o and_o in_o what_o case_n ignorance_n will_v excuse_v though_o i_o think_v it_o be_v very_o plain_a in_o general_n that_o as_o far_o as_o ignorance_n itself_o be_v excusable_a so_o far_o ignorance_n ignorant_a of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n and_o have_v entertain_v very_o gross_a imagination_n of_o the_o deity_n yet_o they_o be_v without_o excuse_n because_o god_n be_v to_o be_v know_v by_o reason_n and_o nature_n and_o therefore_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n who_o live_v in_o a_o world_n which_o have_v the_o visible_a mark_n of_o infinite_a wisdom_n and_o power_n on_o it_o can_v never_o be_v excuse_v for_o not_o know_v god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v nothing_o will_v excuse_v our_o ignorance_n of_o that_o which_o we_o may_v know_v and_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o know_v but_o if_o the_o to_o they_o that_o sit_v in_o darkness_n and_o in_o the_o shadow_n of_o death_n and_o to_o guide_v our_o foot_n into_o the_o way_n of_o peace_n will_v it_o not_o be_v a_o impudent_a thing_n for_o such_o man_n to_o plead_v ignorance_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n who_o will_v not_o look_v into_o the_o bible_n nor_o attend_v public_a instruction_n to_o learn_v their_o duty_n who_o have_v the_o mean_n and_o opportunity_n of_o knowledge_n but_o will_v not_o use_v they_o who_o take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n to_o be_v ignorant_a and_o to_o keep_v out_o of_o the_o way_n of_o knowledge_n which_o so_o often_o cross_v they_o that_o they_o have_v much_o ado_n to_o escape_v it_o whatever_o may_v be_v plead_v in_o excuse_n of_o the_o ignorance_n of_o heathen_n there_o can_v be_v no_o excuse_n for_o christian_n who_o have_v the_o most_o perfect_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o will_v not_o look_v into_o it_o this_o be_v a_o great_a contempt_n of_o god_n it_o be_v in_o effect_n to_o say_v to_o god_n depart_v from_o we_o for_o we_o desire_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o thy_o way_n 21_o job_n 14._o and_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o say_v which_o be_v the_o most_o provoke_a sin_n to_o despise_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n or_o to_o break_v his_o law_n not_o to_o think_v it_o worth_a our_o while_n to_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n or_o through_o the_o power_n of_o temptation_n to_o transgress_v their_o duty_n and_o this_o be_v the_o danger_n we_o be_v in_o if_o we_o neglect_v or_o reject_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n our_o ignorance_n will_v be_v our_o great_a crime_n it_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o excuse_v our_o wickedness_n that_o it_o will_v aggravate_v it_o for_o we_o choose_v to_o be_v ignorant_a that_o we_o may_v be_v wicked_a and_o therefore_o it_o concern_v we_o diligent_o to_o read_v and_o study_v the_o scripture_n and_o to_o attend_v upon_o the_o public_a ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o the_o private_a instruction_n and_o direction_n of_o our_o spiritual_a guide_n for_o since_o christ_n come_v from_o heaven_n to_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o have_v put_v the_o holy_a scripture_n into_o our_o hand_n which_o be_v a_o perfect_a rule_n of_o faith_n and_o manner_n and_o furnish_v we_o with_o all_o the_o advantage_n to_o increase_v in_o knowledge_n it_o be_v as_o dangerous_a a_o thing_n to_o be_v wilful_o ignorant_a of_o the_o gospel_n as_o it_o be_v to_o disobey_v it_o ii_o as_o man_n shall_v be_v judge_v for_o their_o ignorance_n so_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v for_o their_o infidelity_n this_o be_v so_o plain_a in_o scripture_n that_o it_o needs_o little_a proof_n our_o saviour_n express_o tell_v we_o he_o that_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o be_v on_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o god_n send_v into_o the_o world_n that_o the_o world_n through_o he_o may_v be_v save_v be_v not_o condemn_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v condemn_v already_o because_o he_o have_v not_o believe_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_o beget_v son_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o condemnation_n that_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o man_n love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_n because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a 3_o john_n 17_o 18_o 19_o this_o our_o saviour_n frequent_o inculcate_n on_o the_o jew_n that_o unless_o they_o believe_v on_o he_o they_o must_v die_v and_o perish_v in_o their_o sin_n and_o we_o know_v the_o jew_n be_v reject_v by_o god_n for_o their_o infidelity_n their_o temple_n and_o city_n and_o nation_n destroy_v by_o the_o go_v into_o all_o the_o world_n and_o to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n to_o every_o creature_n universal_o pronounce_v he_o that_o believe_v and_o be_v baptize_v shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o shall_v be_v damn_v
and_o impudent_a and_o be_v not_o so_o much_o concern_v to_o be_v private_a what_o at_o first_o they_o be_v ashamed_a the_o world_n shall_v know_v in_o time_n they_o think_v no_o shame_n a_o custom_n of_o sin_v though_o in_o private_a wear_v off_o the_o modesty_n of_o humane_a nature_n and_o when_o man_n forget_v to_o blush_v they_o despise_v reproach_n and_o censure_n and_o then_o publish_v their_o own_o wickedness_n and_o seek_v for_o retirement_n and_o privacy_n no_o long_o the_o most_o impudent_a sinner_n in_o the_o world_n be_v at_o first_o modest_a but_o if_o they_o can_v find_v any_o excuse_n to_o make_v a_o beginning_n how_o modest_a soever_o their_o beginning_n be_v they_o quick_o improve_v and_o lose_v the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o aversion_n to_o it_o by_o their_o repeat_v commission_n and_o then_o can_v bear_v the_o restraint_n of_o modesty_n and_o retirement_n and_o this_o show_v what_o little_a hope_n there_o be_v that_o secret_a sinner_n shall_v ever_o prove_v true_a penitent_n for_o the_o most_o impudent_a and_o harden_a sinner_n sin_v very_o secret_o at_o first_o and_o of_o all_o those_o sinner_n who_o make_v very_o modest_a and_o bashful_a beginning_n i_o doubt_v for_o one_o true_a penitent_a some_o hundred_o sin_n away_o all_o thought_n of_o repentance_n for_o the_o only_a effectual_a restraint_n upon_o humane_a nature_n be_v a_o awe_n and_o reverence_n for_o god_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o future_a judgement_n and_o man_n may_v sin_v away_o this_o in_o private_a as_o well_o as_o in_o public_a when_o once_o they_o conquer_v a_o reverence_n for_o god_n and_o for_o their_o own_o conscience_n which_o a_o custom_n of_o sin_v will_v do_v be_v it_o never_o so_o secret_a they_o will_v have_v little_a regard_n to_o what_o the_o world_n say_v of_o they_o they_o may_v fear_v humane_a punishment_n but_o they_o be_v sink_v below_o the_o sense_n of_o shame_n if_o ever_o god_n reclaim_v such_o man_n it_o must_v be_v either_o by_o some_o great_a and_o severe_a affliction_n which_o carry_v the_o mark_n of_o a_o divine_a vengeance_n on_o they_o or_o by_o discover_v their_o wickedness_n and_o expose_v they_o to_o public_a shame_n before_o they_o have_v lose_v all_o sense_n of_o it_o but_o if_o man_n sin_v secret_o and_o be_v very_o fortunate_a in_o conceal_v their_o sin_n they_o will_v never_o think_v it_o time_n to_o repent_v till_o they_o can_v sin_v no_o long_o and_o therefore_o since_o god_n see_v our_o most_o secret_a sin_n and_o will_v judge_v we_o for_o they_o let_v we_o maintain_v a_o constant_a awe_n for_o god_n in_o our_o great_a retirement_n let_v we_o remember_v that_o god_n be_v always_o present_a with_o we_o that_o he_o see_v we_o when_o no_o other_o eye_n see_v that_o he_o abhor_v our_o most_o secret_a sin_n that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a contempt_n of_o god_n to_o retain_v a_o reverence_n for_o man_n and_o to_o cast_v off_o the_o reverence_n of_o god_n to_o be_v ashamed_a that_o man_n shall_v know_v and_o see_v that_o wickedness_n which_o we_o be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o commit_v though_o we_o know_v god_n look_v on_o but_o then_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n we_o must_v remember_v that_o at_o the_o reward_n they_o aim_v at_o and_o all_o the_o reward_n they_o must_v expect_v but_o true_a religion_n do_v not_o court_v the_o applause_n of_o man_n a_o good_a man_n must_v set_v a_o good_a example_n to_o the_o world_n in_o his_o public_a conversation_n but_o such_o act_n of_o virtue_n as_o may_v be_v private_a he_o be_v content_v shall_v be_v know_v to_o none_o but_o god_n and_o his_o own_o conscience_n this_o be_v high_o acceptable_a to_o god_n for_o it_o be_v to_o do_v good_a only_o for_o god_n sake_n and_o that_o satisfaction_n we_o take_v in_o do_v good_a here_o be_v no_o mixture_n of_o secular_a end_n but_o god_n be_v the_o whole_a world_n to_o we_o that_o he_o see_v it_o be_v more_o than_o all_o humane_a applause_n though_o the_o whole_a world_n be_v the_o theatre_n we_o expect_v our_o reward_n from_o he_o and_o from_o he_o only_o for_o we_o let_v no_o body_n else_o know_v it_o which_o be_v such_o a_o perfection_n of_o obedience_n of_o faith_n of_o hope_n and_o trust_v in_o god_n as_o deserve_v the_o great_a reward_n those_o who_o industrious_o conceal_v the_o good_a they_o do_v from_o man_n can_v expect_v nothing_o from_o man_n for_o it_o neither_o praise_n nor_o reward_n and_o therefore_o can_v have_v no_o other_o motive_n to_o do_v good_a but_o the_o love_n and_o reverence_n of_o god_n and_o faith_n in_o he_o or_o the_o pleasure_n they_o take_v in_o do_v good_a for_o goodness_n sake_n which_o be_v such_o noble_a and_o divine_a principle_n of_o action_n as_o command_v reverence_n from_o all_o man_n when_o they_o be_v discover_v do_v great_a honour_n to_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o will_v procure_v great_a reward_n which_o be_v a_o mighty_a encouragement_n to_o the_o most_o secret_a virtue_n to_o the_o most_o secret_a act_n of_o devotion_n and_o charity_n that_o our_o father_n who_o see_v in_o secret_a will_v reward_v we_o open_o in_o the_o presence_n of_o man_n and_o angel_n vi_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o thought_n and_o though_o all_o man_n will_v confess_v this_o also_o yet_o few_o consider_v it_o good_a god_n can_v we_o look_v into_o one_o another_o thought_n how_o shall_v we_o blush_v with_o lust_n and_o entertain_v their_o fancy_n with_o all_o impure_a and_o unclean_a imagination_n the_o most_o affable_a and_o courteous_a man_n who_o word_n and_o behaviour_n be_v soft_a endear_n and_o oblige_v can_v yet_o cherish_v revengeful_a thought_n anger_n malice_n hatred_n and_o please_v themselves_o with_o the_o imagination_n of_o some_o tragical_a scene_n which_o they_o dare_v not_o act._n nay_o many_o time_n those_o who_o appear_v humble_a to_o a_o fault_n who_o seem_v as_o free_v from_o ambition_n as_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n who_o arrogate_v nothing_o to_o themselves_o nay_o seem_v to_o admire_v every_o body_n but_o themselves_o be_v yet_o very_o full_a of_o themselves_o swell_v with_o vain_a conceit_n of_o their_o own_o worth_n and_o merit_n and_o please_v themselves_o with_o their_o own_o desert_n and_o that_o the_o world_n take_v notice_n of_o their_o desert_n and_o then_o they_o consider_v how_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v reward_v and_o prefer_v and_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o choose_v very_o well_o for_o themselves_o and_o thus_o entertain_v their_o delude_a fanice_n with_o vain_a and_o empty_a scene_n of_o greatness_n and_o glory_n the_o pharisee_n think_v all_o this_o very_a innocent_a that_o to_o lust_n after_o a_o beautiful_a woman_n and_o please_v themselves_o with_o amorous_a and_o wanton_a imagination_n be_v no_o crime_n if_o they_o do_v
