which_o christ_n do_v be_v to_o satisfy_v for_o our_o nonpayment_n and_o disobedience_n 5._o so_o it_o make_v christ_n to_o have_v fulfil_v the_o preceptive_a part_n of_o the_o law_n in_o our_o sense_n as_o though_o i_o hold_v the_o contraty_a opinion_n thesis_n xii_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o plead_v the_o repeal_n of_o the_o law_n for_o our_o justification_n but_o must_v refer_v it_o to_o our_o surety_n who_o by_o the_o value_n and_o efficacy_n of_o his_o once_o offering_n and_o merit_n do_v continual_o satisfy_v explication_n i_o shall_v here_o explain_v to_o you_o in_o what_o sense_n and_o how_o far_o the_o law_n be_v in_o force_n and_o how_o far_o not_o and_o then_o prove_v it_o in_o and_o under_o the_o next_o head_n you_o must_v here_o distinguish_v betwixt_o 1._o the_o repeal_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o relax_n of_o it_o 2._o between_o a_o dispensation_n absolute_a and_o respective_a 3._o between_o the_o alteration_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o alteration_n of_o the_o subject_n relation_n to_o it_o 4._o between_o a_o discharge_v conditional_a with_o a_o suspension_n of_o execution_n and_o a_o discharge_v absolute_a and_o so_o i_o resolve_v the_o question_n thus_o 1._o the_o law_n of_o work_n be_v not_o abrogate_a or_o repeal_v but_o dispense_v with_o or_o relax_v a_o dispensation_n be_v as_o grotius_n define_v it_o a_o act_n of_o a_o superior_a whereby_o the_o obligation_n of_o a_o law_n in_o force_n be_v take_v away_o as_o to_o certain_a person_n and_o thing_n 2._o this_o dispensation_n therefore_o be_v not_o total_a or_o absolute_a but_o respective_a for_o 1._o though_o it_o dispense_v with_o the_o rigorous_a execution_n yet_o not_o with_o every_o degree_n of_o execution_n 2._o though_o the_o law_n be_v dispense_v with_o as_o it_o contain_v the_o proper_a subject_n of_o the_o penalty_n viz._n the_o party_n offend_v and_o also_o the_o circumstance_n of_o duration_n etc._n etc._n yet_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o mere_a punishment_n abstract_v from_o person_n and_o circumstance_n it_o be_v not_o dispense_v with_o for_o to_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o dispense_v with_o his_o satisfaction_n be_v by_o pay_v the_o full_a value_n 3._o though_o by_o this_o dispensation_n our_o freedom_n may_v be_v as_o full_a as_o upon_o a_o repeal_n yet_o the_o alteration_n be_v not_o make_v in_o the_o law_n but_o in_o our_o estate_n and_o relation_n to_o the_o law_n 4._o so_o far_o be_v the_o law_n dispense_v with_o to_o all_o as_o to_o suspend_v the_o rigorous_a execution_n for_o a_o time_n and_o a_o liberation_n or_o discharge_v conditional_a procure_v and_o grant_v they_o but_o a_o absolute_a discharge_n be_v grant_v to_o
none_o in_o this_o life_n for_o even_o when_o we_o do_v perform_v the_o condition_n yet_o still_o the_o discharge_n remain_v conditional_a till_o we_o have_v quite_o finish_v our_o performance_n for_o it_o be_v not_o one_o instantaneous_a act_n of_o believe_v which_o shall_v quite_o discharge_v we_o but_o a_o continue_a faith_n no_o long_o be_v we_o discharge_v than_o we_o be_v believer_n and_o where_o the_o condition_n be_v not_o perform_v the_o law_n be_v still_o in_o force_n and_o shall_v be_v execute_v upon_o the_o offender_n himself_o i_o speak_v nothing_o in_o all_o this_o of_o the_o directive_n use_v of_o the_o moral_a law_n to_o believer_n but_o how_o far_o the_o law_n be_v yet_o in_o force_n even_o as_o it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n because_o a_o utter_a repeal_n of_o it_o in_o this_o sense_n be_v so_o common_o but_o inconsiderate_o assert_v that_o it_o be_v no_o further_o overthrow_v no_o not_o to_o believer_n then_o be_v here_o explain_v i_o now_o come_v to_o prove_v thesis_n xiii_o if_o this_o be_v not_o so_o but_o that_o christ_n have_v abrogate_a the_o first_o covenant_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v 1._o that_o no_o sin_n but_o that_o of_o adam_n and_o final_a unbelief_n be_v so_o much_o as_o threaten_v with_o death_n or_o that_o death_n be_v explicit_o that_o be_v by_o any_o law_n due_a to_o it_o or_o deserve_v by_o it_o for_o what_o the_o law_n in_o force_n do_v not_o threaten_v that_o be_v not_o explicit_o deserve_v or_o due_a by_o law_n 2._o it_o will_v follow_v that_o christ_n die_v not_o to_o prevent_v or_o remove_v the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n so_o deserve_v or_o due_a to_o we_o for_o any_o but_o adam_n sin_n nor_o to_o pardon_v our_o sin_n at_o all_o but_o only_o to_o prevent_v our_o desert_n of_o wrath_n and_o curse_n and_o consequent_o to_o prevent_v our_o need_n of_o pardon_n 3._o it_o will_v follow_v that_o against_o eternal_a wrath_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n we_o must_v not_o plead_v the_o pardon_n of_o any_o sin_n but_o the_o first_o but_o our_o own_o non-desert_n of_o that_o wrath_n because_o of_o the_o repeal_n of_o that_o law_n before_o the_o sin_n be_v commit_v all_o which_o consequence_n seem_v to_o i_o unsufferable_a which_o can_v be_v avoid_v if_o the_o law_n be_v repeal_v explication_n when_o god_n the_o absolute_a sovereign_n of_o the_o world_n shall_v but_o command_v though_o he_o express_o threaten_v no_o punishment_n to_o the_o disobedient_a yet_o implicit_o it_o may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v due_a that_o be_v the_o offence_n in_o itself_o consider_v deserve_v some_o punishment_n in_o the_o general_a for_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n contain_v some_o general_a threaten_n as_o well_o as_o precept_n as_o i_o show_v before_o whether_o this_o dueness_n of_o punishment_n which_o i_o call_v implicit_a do_v arise_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o offence_n only_o or_o also_o because_o of_o this_o general_a threat_n in_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n i_o will_v not_o dispute_v but_o god_n deal_v with_o his_o creature_n by_o way_n of_o legal_a government_n and_o keep_v not_o their_o deserve_a punishment_n from_o their_o knowledge_n no_o more_o than_o their_o duty_n it_o be_v almost_o as_o necessary_a to_o be_v know_v for_o our_o incitement_n as_o the_o precept_n for_o our_o direction_n god_n law_n be_v perfect_a law_n fit_v to_o the_o attainment_n of_o all_o their_o end_n and_o by_o these_o law_n do_v he_o rule_v the_o world_n and_o according_a to_o they_o do_v he_o dispose_v of_o his_o reward_n and_o punishment_n so_o that_o we_o need_v not_o fear_v that_o which_o be_v not_o threaten_v and_o in_o this_o sense_n it_o be_v that_o i_o say_v that_o what_o no_o law_n in_o force_n do_v threaten_v that_o sin_n do_v not_o explicit_o deserve_v not_o so_o deserve_v as_o that_o we_o need_v to_o fear_v the_o suffering_n of_o it_o and_o upon_o this_o ground_n the_o three_o forementioned_a consequence_n must_v needs_o follow_v for_o the_o new_a covenant_n threaten_v not_o death_n to_o any_o sin_n but_o final_a unbelief_n or_o at_o least_o to_o no_o sin_n without_o final_a unbelief_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o old_a covenant_n be_v abrogate_a than_o no_o law_n threaten_v it_o and_o consequent_o 1_o our_o sin_n do_v not_o deserve_v it_o in_o the_o sense_n express_v nor_o christ_n prevent_v the_o wrath_n deserve_v but_o only_o the_o desert_n of_o satisfaction_n to_o the_o law_n whosoever_o will_v repent_v and_o believe_v in_o he_o to_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v justify_v through_o that_o satisfaction_n from_o all_o that_o the_o law_n do_v
