his_o sense_n and_o all_o his_o reason_n to_o serve_v to_o that_o purpose_n as_o in_o who_o the_o ear_n of_o this_o present_a life_n only_o have_v devour_v and_o swallow_v up_o his_o sense_n and_o understanding_n the_o sensual_a man_n as_o s._n paul_n himself_o term_v he_o who_o be_v give_v whole_o to_o these_o sensible_a thing_n imbace_v and_o cast_v down_o his_o reason_n so_o far_o as_o to_o make_v it_o a_o bondslave_n to_o his_o sense_n and_o the_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n thereof_o and_o the_o reasonable_a man_n who_o live_v proper_o in_o spirit_n and_o mind_n who_o enter_v into_o himself_o to_o know_v himself_o and_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o to_o behold_v god_n make_v this_o life_n to_o serve_v to_o the_o atteynment_n of_o a_o better_a and_o use_v his_o sense_n but_o as_o instrument_n and_o servant_n of_o his_o reason_n after_o as_o any_o of_o these_o three_o power_n do_v reign_n and_o bear_v sway_n in_o man_n that_o be_v to_o wit_n after_o as_o a_o man_n yield_v himself_o more_o to_o one_o than_o to_o another_o of_o they_o so_o become_v he_o like_a unto_o the_o spirit_n the_o brute_n beast_n or_o plant_n yea_o and_o the_o very_a block_n and_o stone_n but_o it_o be_v our_o disposition_n even_o by_o leynd_a to_o be_v carry_v away_o by_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n and_o by_o the_o object_n which_o hem_v we_o in_o on_o all_o side_n but_o as_o for_o against_o our_o nature_n yea_o or_o beyond_o our_o nature_n our_o nature_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o now_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o have_v a_o soul_n whereby_o we_o live_v feel_v and_o understand_v and_o which_o be_v but_o one_o have_v in_o itself_o alone_o so_o many_o sundry_a power_n or_o ability_n for_o it_o will_v be_v demand_v of_o we_o by_o and_o by_o what_o this_o soul_n proper_o be_v and_o sooth_o if_o i_o shall_v say_v i_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v i_o shall_v not_o belie_v myself_o a_o whit_n for_o i_o shall_v but_o confess_v my_o own_o ignorance_n as_o many_o great_a learned_a man_n have_v do_v afore_o i_o and_o i_o shall_v do_v no_o wrong_n at_o all_o to_o the_o soul_n itself_o for_o since_o we_o can_v denyâ—_n the_o effect_n thereof_o the_o less_o that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o declare_v the_o nature_n and_o be_v thereof_o the_o more_o do_v the_o excellency_n thereof_o shine_v forth_o again_o it_o be_v a_o plain_a case_n that_o no_o thing_n can_v comprehend_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v great_a than_o itself_o now_o our_o soul_n be_v after_o a_o sort_n less_o than_o itself_o inasmuch_o as_o it_o be_v wrap_v up_o in_o this_o body_n in_o like_a wise_a as_o the_o man_n that_o have_v gyve_n and_o fetter_n on_o his_o foot_n be_v after_o a_o sort_n weak_a than_o himself_o nevertheless_o let_v we_o assay_v to_o satiffye_v such_o demand_n as_o well_o as_o we_o can_v and_o forasmuch_o as_o it_o be_v the_o image_n of_o god_n not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o government_n and_o maintenance_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o also_o even_o in_o the_o very_a nature_n thereof_o as_o we_o say_v heretofore_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n if_o we_o can_v express_v or_o conceyve_v what_o it_o be_v let_v we_o at_o leastwise_o be_v certify_v what_o it_o be_v not_o first_o of_o all_o that_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n be_v not_o both_o one_o thing_n thing_n but_o two_o very_o far_o differ_v thing_n and_o also_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o body_n it_o appear_v of_o itself_o without_o further_a proof_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o body_n or_o a_o part_n of_o the_o body_n it_o shall_v grow_v with_o the_o body_n as_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n do_v and_o the_o great_a that_o the_o body_n be_v the_o great_a also_o shall_v the_o soul_n be_v nay_o contrariwise_o the_o body_n increase_v to_o a_o certain_a age_n and_o then_o stay_v after_o which_o age_n be_v common_o the_o time_n than_o the_o soul_n do_v most_o grow_v and_o those_o that_o be_v strong_a of_o mind_n be_v common_o weak_a of_o body_n and_o the_o soul_n be_v see_v to_o be_v full_a of_o liveliness_n in_o a_o languisshiâ—g_a body_n and_o to_o grow_v the_o more_o in_o force_n by_o the_o decay_n of_o the_o body_n the_o soul_n than_o grow_v not_o with_o the_o body_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o the_o body_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o whereas_o i_o speak_v of_o grow_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o grow_v i_o mean_v the_o profit_v thereof_o in_o power_n and_o virtue_n as_o the_o body_n grow_v in_o greatness_n by_o further_a enlarge_n again_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o body_n it_o shall_v lose_v her_o strength_n and_o soundness_n with_o the_o body_n so_o as_o the_o maim_a in_o body_n shall_v therewith_o feel_v also_o a_o maim_n in_o his_o understanding_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o member_n whosoever_o be_v sick_a of_o any_o disease_n shall_v also_o be_v sick_a in_o his_o reason_n he_o that_o â—impeth_v or_o halt_v shall_v therewith_o haâ—â—_n in_o soul_n also_o the_o blind_a man_n soul_n shall_v be_v blind_a and_o the_o lame_a man_n soul_n shall_v be_v lame_a but_o we_o see_v contrariwise_o that_o the_o maim_a and_o the_o sick_a the_o cripple_n and_o the_o blind_a have_v their_o soul_n whole_a and_o sound_a and_o their_o understanding_n perfect_a and_o cléeresighted_a in_o itself_o to_o be_v short_a many_o a_o man_n die_v who_o body_n be_v sound_a and_o differ_v not_o a_o whit_n in_o any_o part_n from_o that_o it_o be_v when_o it_o be_v alive_a and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o both_o life_n move_v sense_n and_o understanding_n be_v out_o of_o it_o let_v we_o say_v then_o that_o in_o the_o body_n there_o be_v a_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o of_o the_o body_n but_o be_v a_o far_a other_o thing_n will_v remove_v that_o which_o a_o child_n can_v and_o that_o a_o child_n of_o two_o year_n old_a will_v go_v which_o thing_n a_o babe_n of_o two_o month_n old_n can_v do_v but_o he_o shall_v consider_v also_o that_o if_o the_o selfsame_o man_n or_o the_o selfsame_o child_n shall_v have_v a_o mischance_n in_o his_o leg_n or_o in_o his_o arm_n he_o shall_v thereby_o forgo_v the_o strength_n commencement_n of_o sense_n and_o move_v which_o exceed_v the_o plant_n and_o do_v put_v he_o in_o a_o readiness_n to_o be_v endue_v with_o sense_n as_o a_o beast_n be_v in_o this_o life_n he_o have_v sense_n and_o move_v in_o their_o perfection_n which_o be_v that_o property_n of_o a_o sensitive_a wight_n but_o yet_o beside_o these_o he_o have_v also_o a_o beginning_n to_o reason_n and_o understand_v which_o be_v a_o beginning_n of_o another_o life_n such_o as_o the_o sensitive_a wight_n have_v not_o &_o this_o life_n be_v to_o be_v perfect_v in_o another_o place_n in_o the_o life_n in_o stead_n of_o a_o light_n to_o the_o eye_n and_o like_o as_o in_o come_v into_o this_o world_n he_o come_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o another_o world_n so_o in_o go_v yet_o into_o another_o world_n he_o must_v also_o go_v out_o of_o this_o world_n he_o come_v out_o of_o the_o first_o world_n into_o the_o second_o as_o it_o be_v fail_v in_o nourishment_n but_o grow_v in_o strength_n unto_o move_v and_o sense_n and_o he_o go_v out_o of_o the_o second_o into_o the_o three_o fail_v in_o sense_n and_o move_a but_o grow_v in_o reason_n and_o understanding_n now_o see_v we_o call_v the_o passage_n mortal_a that_o be_v to_o say_v if_o he_o have_v no_o life_n he_o can_v not_o dispute_v of_o the_o mortal_a life_n neither_o can_v he_o speak_v of_o the_o immortal_a if_o he_o himself_o also_o be_v not_o immortal_a therefore_o let_v we_o go_v back_o retryve_v some_o man_n will_v say_v that_o the_o soul_n die_v with_o the_o body_n because_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n be_v but_o one_o thing_n and_o he_o beléeve_v that_o they_o be_v both_o but_o one_o because_o he_o see_v no_o more_o but_o the_o body_n this_o argument_n be_v all_o one_o with_o they_o which_o deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o a_o soul_n for_o in_o a_o dead_a body_n thou_o see_v the_o same_o part_n remain_v but_o thou_o see_v not_o the_o same_o do_n that_o be_v in_o it_o afore_o when_o a_o man_n be_v dead_a his_o eye_n see_v nothing_o at_o all_o and_o yet_o be_v there_o nothing_o change_v of_o his_o eye_n but_o while_o he_o be_v alive_a it_o see_v infinite_a thing_n that_o be_v divers_a the_o power_n then_o which_o see_v be_v not_o of_o the_o body_n yet_o notwithstanding_o how_o lyvely_a and_o quickesighted_a so_o ever_o the_o eye_n be_v it_o see_v not_o itself_o wonder_v not_o therefore_o though_o thou_o have_v a_o soul_n and_o that_o the_o same_o soul_n see_v not_o itself_o for_o if_o thy_o eyesight_n see_v itself_o it_o be_v not_o a_o power_n or_o ability_n of_o see_v but_o a_o visible_a thing_n likewise_o if_o thy_o soul_n see_v itself_o it_o be_v no_o more_o a_o soul_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o worker_n and_o quickener_n of_o the_o body_n but_o a_o very_a body_n unable_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n of_o itself_o and_o a_o massy_a substance_n subject_a to_o suffer_v for_o we_o see_v nothing_o but_o the_o body_n and_o bodily_a substance_n but_o in_o this_o thou_o perceive_v somewhat_o else_o than_o a_o body_n as_o i_o have_v say_v afore_o that_o if_o thy_o eye_n have_v any_o peculiar_a colour_n of_o it_o own_o it_o can_v not_o discern_v any_o other_o colour_n than_o that_o see_v then_o that_o thou_o conceyve_v so_o many_o divers_a body_n at_o once_o in_o imagination_n needs_o must_v thou_o have_v a_o power_n in_o thou_o which_o be_v not_o a_o body_n be_v it_o say_v they_o that_o outward_a send_v thereof_o or_o of_o the_o wholsomnes_n or_o unwholsomnes_n of_o food_n by_o the_o taste_n thereof_o or_o of_o the_o whotnesse_n or_o vehemency_n of_o a_o fever_n by_o feel_v the_o pulse_n yea_o and_o our_o proceed_v even_o into_o the_o very_a bowel_n of_o a_o man_n whether_o the_o eye_n be_v the_o quick_a of_o all_o sense_n be_v not_o able_a to_o atteyne_v sure_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o a_o more_o mighty_a power_n than_o the_o sense_n be_v and_o in_o very_a deed_n there_o be_v beast_n which_o do_v here_o see_v smell_v taste_n and_o feel_v much_o better_a and_o
