heart_n be_v knit_v to_o they_o and_o the_o league_n and_o combination_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v never_o break_v and_o part_v so_o that_o by_o this_o we_o may_v see_v why_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n may_v think_v he_o have_v no_o delight_n in_o sin_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o league_n between_o sin_n and_o the_o soul_n still_o and_o this_o hypocrite_n may_v thus_o continue_v all_o the_o while_n the_o sound_n of_o the_o stroke_n be_v upon_o he_o if_o haply_o his_o affection_n be_v stir_v after_o some_o sin_n then_o say_v conscience_n you_o remember_v what_o be_v do_v before_o you_o remember_v what_o you_o do_v such_o and_o such_o a_o time_n will_v you_o fain_o be_v in_o hell_n again_o i_o will_v arrest_v you_o for_o this_o one_o day_n say_v conscience_n and_o so_o his_o soul_n fly_v off_o from_o his_o curse_a distemper_n not_o that_o the_o union_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v break_v but_o only_o his_o corruption_n for_o the_o present_n be_v abate_v for_o act_v by_o this_o time_n you_o see_v the_o reason_n why_o i_o enter_v upon_o this_o point_n which_o be_v this_o to_o undermine_v the_o bottom_n that_o bear_v up_o of_o all_o these_o sort_n of_o person_n ever_o yet_o attain_v a_o true_a long_a desire_n after_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n you_o tell_v i_o in_o the_o beginning_n if_o i_o can_v prove_v this_o you_o will_v yield_v the_o day_n therefore_o take_v these_o truth_n home_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o reason_n and_o parley_v sound_o and_o thorough_o with_o your_o own_o heart_n after_o this_o manner_n why_o how_o far_o be_o i_o from_o heaven_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o yet_o open_v my_o eye_n and_o humble_v my_o heart_n and_o enlarge_v my_o soul_n if_o i_o never_o yet_o have_v a_o longing_n after_o a_o saviour_n what_o not_o desire_v heaven_n how_o then_o can_v i_o dream_v or_o think_v that_o god_n will_v show_v mercy_n to_o my_o soul_n in_o the_o pardon_n of_o my_o sin_n if_o no_o desire_n no_o christ_n no_o desire_n no_o heaven_n but_o i_o have_v no_o desire_n therefore_o no_o heaven_n no_o christ_n no_o happiness_n the_o lord_n settle_v these_o thing_n upon_o your_o soul_n that_o you_o may_v never_o give_v quiet_a to_o your_o heart_n nor_o rest_n to_o your_o soul_n till_o you_o find_v this_o sound_a desire_n wrought_v in_o you_o belove_a what_o will_v you_o do_v for_o heaven_n if_o you_o can_v so_o much_o as_o desire_v to_o come_v to_o heaven_n and_o happiness_n quest_n but_o here_o some_o will_v say_v this_o be_v a_o very_a strict_a course_n this_o be_v a_o very_a narrow_a passage_n indeed_o let_v we_o see_v how_o we_o may_v not_o be_v cozen_v in_o our_o condition_n nor_o deceive_v by_o rest_v in_o our_o performance_n etc._n etc._n ans_fw-fr i_o refer_v my_o answer_n to_o these_o three_o conclusion_n conclusion_n 1_o first_o thou_o must_v know_v that_o the_o remainder_n of_o those_o distemper_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v rest_v upon_o the_o merit_n of_o evil_a of_o punishment_n and_o make_v know_v a_o great_a good_a to_o the_o heart_n than_o ease_n and_o the_o removal_n of_o the_o outward_a plague_n and_o horror_n the_o
seek_v after_o he_o who_o her_o soul_n love_v and_o prize_v and_o from_o who_o she_o expect_v that_o good_a she_o need_v it_o ought_v to_o be_v so_o with_o our_o desire_n they_o must_v proceed_v only_o from_o the_o spark_n of_o the_o spirit_n the_o smoke_a flax_n god_n will_v not_o quench_v 12.20_o matth._n 12.20_o all_o flax_n of_o itself_o will_v not_o smoke_v but_o a_o spark_n must_v come_v into_o it_o and_o that_o will_v make_v it_o catch_v fire_n and_o smoke_n thus_o lay_v your_o heart_n before_o the_o lord_n and_o say_v good_a lord_n here_o be_v only_a flax_n here_o be_v only_o a_o stubborn_a heart_n but_o strike_v thou_o by_o thy_o promise_n one_o spark_n from_o heaven_n that_o i_o may_v have_v a_o smoke_a desire_n after_o christ_n and_o a_o long_a desire_n after_o grace_n that_o i_o may_v walk_v with_o more_o care_n and_o more_o conscience_n with_o thou_o hereafter_o use_v the_o mean_n thou_o have_v appoint_v for_o my_o good_a that_o they_o may_v at_o the_o last_o work_n unto_o my_o good_a this_o take_v notice_n of_o above_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o he_o that_o think_v to_o get_v a_o desire_n from_o himself_o will_v not_o labour_v to_o obtain_v from_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n therefore_o labour_n to_o use_v all_o mean_n and_o labour_n to_o see_v a_o weakness_n in_o all_o mean_n and_o expect_v this_o desire_n only_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n thus_o we_o see_v the_o mean_n how_o we_o may_v get_v this_o desire_n thus_o we_o see_v how_o the_o lord_n learn_v every_o faculty_n his_o lecture_n the_o mind_n have_v be_v enlighten_v we_o have_v do_v with_o that_o hope_n have_v be_v stir_v and_o desire_v quicken_v these_o we_o have_v likewise_o finish_v we_o come_v now_o in_o the_o four_o place_n to_o treat_v of_o two_o other_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n love_n and_o joy_n which_o because_o they_o be_v so_o near_o combine_v together_o both_o in_o nature_n and_o form_n as_o we_o shall_v hear_v hereafter_o therefore_o with_o they_o seem_v rather_o the_o effect_n that_o follow_v faith_n than_o to_o be_v the_o seed_n and_o spawn_n to_o bring_v in_o faith_n methinks_v these_o doubt_n shall_v not_o trouble_v any_o if_o they_o do_v but_o consider_v what_o we_o have_v speak_v already_o in_o the_o work_n of_o preparation_n but_o a_o little_a to_o take_v away_o these_o rub_n take_v notice_n of_o three_o ensue_a passage_n which_o will_v clear_v the_o way_n to_o that_o which_o afterward_o shall_v be_v speak_v passage_n 1_o know_v in_o the_o first_o place_n it_o be_v not_o my_o intendment_n to_o persuade_v any_o to_o think_v that_o sanctification_n be_v before_o justification_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v i_o conceive_v the_o thing_n be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o truth_n take_v sanctification_n in_o a_o narrow_a strict_a sense_n as_o it_o must_v be_v so_o conceive_v in_o this_o place_n neither_o can_v the_o doctrine_n which_o i_o have_v deliver_v if_o they_o be_v understand_v aright_o according_a to_o the_o upon_o i_o i_o have_v no_o power_n of_o myself_o but_o only_o receive_v it_o from_o the_o lord_n at_o the_o first_o convey_v in_o of_o the_o power_n of_o hope_n and_o desire_v and_o love_n and_o joy_n god_n communicate_v they_o unto_o i_o but_o in_o sanctification_n i_o work_v from_o a_o principle_n which_o i_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o power_n of_o grace_n which_o christ_n have_v communicate_v to_o i_o be_v call_v and_o sanctify_a and_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n so_o that_o the_o grace_n i_o now_o speak_v of_o usher_z in_o and_o lead_v the_o way_n for_o the_o come_n that_o will_v frame_v his_o heart_n anew_o his_o corrupt_a heart_n be_v rather_o trouble_v with_o it_o than_o any_o way_n delight_v in_o it_o and_o if_o humble_a and_o not_o enlighten_v be_v can_v of_o those_o that_o have_v it_o for_o if_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o have_v no_o good_a of_o himself_o and_o can_v receive_v no_o good_a but_o rather_o oppose_v it_o then_o if_o he_o have_v any_o save_a work_n wrought_v in_o he_o it_o be_v god_n free_a gift_n therefore_o first_o the_o lord_n meet_v with_o a_o poor_a sinner_n and_o reveal_v himself_o to_o he_o content_n of_o the_o world_n and_o he_o see_v more_o certainty_n in_o the_o good_a of_o the_o promise_n than_o in_o all_o the_o good_a thing_n here_o below_o and_o therefore_o he_o will_v rather_o lose_v all_o than_o the_o promise_n and_o will_v rather_o trust_v to_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o the_o promise_n than_o to_o any_o thing_n else_o beside_o though_o riches_n be_v never_o so_o out_o of_o the_o pit_n for_o a_o small_a matter_n but_o he_o will_v stand_v his_o ground_n as_o a_o man_n do_v in_o war_n and_o will_v undergo_v much_o trouble_n and_o stand_v stout_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n and_o yet_o though_o he_o be_v somewhat_o stout_a in_o his_o way_n yet_o his_o heart_n be_v naught_o too_o and_o that_o you_o may_v know_v he_o and_o that_o he_o may_v know_v himself_o let_v we_o do_v three_o thing_n first_o let_v we_o see_v what_o he_o can_v say_v for_o himself_o second_o wherein_o his_o falseness_n appear_v and_o the_o evidence_n of_o it_o three_o the_o difference_n between_o he_o and_o a_o believer_n indeed_o first_o what_o this_o man_n be_v and_o how_o far_o he_o go_v i_o can_v better_o plead_v for_o he_o than_o he_o can_v plead_v for_o practice_n but_o to_o believe_v be_v a_o closure_n of_o the_o heart_n with_o a_o entertain_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o truth_n and_o the_o give_a way_n of_o our_o soul_n thereunto_o now_o because_o man_n can_v see_v their_o faith_n therefore_o no_o man_n will_v yield_v but_o he_o do_v believe_v second_o man_n conceive_v that_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o take_v of_o mercy_n
