justification_n sect._n 1_o have_v thus_o far_o show_v what_o work_v they_o be_v which_o the_o apostle_n in_o our_o text_n exclude_v from_o justification_n as_o unnecessary_a thereunto_o viz._n such_o work_v as_o be_v proper_a to_o the_o jew_n in_o contra-distinction_n to_o the_o gentile_n which_o be_v in_o scripture_n usual_o call_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n for_o about_o they_o do_v the_o controversy_n grow_v as_o we_o have_v see_v before_o all_o that_o i_o shall_v now_o add_v by_o way_n of_o use_n as_o to_o this_o matter_n shall_v be_v for_o caution_n to_o take_v heed_n how_o we_o oppose_v faith_n to_o work_n and_o that_o when_o we_o do_v so_o be_v we_o sure_a to_o keep_v the_o scripture_n ride_v which_o i_o have_v be_v now_o trace_v out_o it_o be_v true_a faith_n and_o love_n etc._n etc._n but_o i_o be_o not_o without_o much_o confidence_n that_o they_o be_v never_o oppose_v as_o faith_n and_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n be_v as_o if_o a_o man_n that_o have_v no_o love_n may_v be_v justify_v by_o his_o faith_n as_o he_o that_o work_v not_o or_o which_o have_v no_o work_n in_o our_o apostle_n sense_n may_v it_o be_v no_o where_n neither_o in_o word_n nor_o sense_n say_v but_o he_o that_o love_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v to_o he_o for_o righteousness_n but_o the_o contrary_a in_o substance_n be_v flat_o affirm_v by_o the_o apostle_n james_n chap._n 2._o beside_o other_o scripture_n as_o i_o shall_v god_n will_v come_v afterward_o to_o show_v and_o therefore_o i_o do_v think_v that_o our_o protestant_a writer_n have_v give_v too_o much_o advantage_n to_o the_o papist_n whilst_o in_o assert_v justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o without_o any_o work_n at_o all_o they_o have_v in_o the_o mean_a while_n chief_o if_o not_o only_o build_v this_o their_o assertion_n upon_o such_o scripture_n as_o my_o text_n with_o other_o of_o like_a nature_n which_o treat_v not_o of_o all_o work_n in_o general_a but_o of_o such_o as_o do_v belong_v unto_o the_o jew_n in_o special_a and_o therefore_o be_v usual_o call_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n or_o the_o deed_n of_o the_o law_n work_v of_o what_o law_n i_o pray_v you_o but_o of_o that_o law_n which_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v pertain_v to_o the_o israelite_n rom._n 9.4_o and_o which_o as_o the_o same_o apostle_n say_v also_o the_o gentile_n have_v not_o rom._n 2.12.14_o 1_o cor._n 9.21_o objection_n sect._n 2_o but_o when_o the_o apostle_n oppose_v this_o law_n that_o be_v give_v unto_o the_o jew_n unto_o faith_n and_o when_o he_o deny_v justification_n to_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o that_o law_n be_v it_o not_o all_o one_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v oppose_v faith_n unto_o work_n command_v in_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o same_o work_n of_o love_n justice_z and_o mercy_n that_o be_v enjoin_v in_o the_o gospel_n be_v also_o command_v in_o the_o law_n answer_n this_o indeed_o be_v a_o objection_n that_o deserve_v consideration_n but_o for_o answer_v take_v it_o thus_o though_o it_o be_v very_o true_a that_o the_o same_o work_n of_o love_n justice_z and_o mercy_n be_v enjoin_v both_o in_o law_n and_o gospel_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o when_o the_o apostle_n oppose_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n to_o faith_n that_o then_o he_o oppose_v gospel-work_n to_o faith_n likewise_o for_o these_o two_o reason_n 1._o because_o those_o work_n as_o they_o be_v enjoin_v the_o jew_n in_o the_o law_n be_v part_n of_o the_o first_o covenant_n but_o as_o they_o be_v enjoin_v in_o the_o gospel_n so_o they_o be_v part_n of_o the_o second_o covenant_n but_o now_o the_o law_n or_o first_o covenant_n in_o the_o letter_n of_o it_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n the_o thing_n promise_v in_o it_o be_v suspend_v not_o upon_o the_o condition_n of_o believe_a but_o of_o do_v but_o the_o man_n that_o do_v they_o shall_v live_v in_o they_o gal._n 3.12_o upon_o which_o account_n and_o in_o respect_n whereof_o the_o work_v even_o of_o love_n justice_z and_o mercy_n as_o enjoin_v under_o that_o covenant_n may_v possible_o be_v oppose_v to_o faith_n whereas_o the_o gospel_n or_o new_a covenant_n life_n as_o the_o scripture_n call_v that_o justification_n which_o be_v of_o the_o gospelkinds_n rom_n 5.18_o and_o do_v it_o not_o come_v to_o the_o same_o issue_n to_o say_v that_o faith_n without_o work_n will_v not_o justify_v and_o to_o say_v that_o justification_n without_o work_n will_v not_o save_v for_o be_v justification_n any_o thing_n else_o then_o a_o discharge_n or_o set_v a_o man_n free_a from_o condemnation_n and_o consequent_o bring_v he_o into_o a_o condition_n of_o life_n so_o that_o whether_o the_o defect_n lie_v in_o the_o faith_n that_o shall_v justify_v necessity_n of_o work_n unto_o salvation_n on_o which_o side_n soever_o it_o fall_v with_o the_o sense_n of_o which_o necessity_n to_o fill_v the_o heart_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v the_o thing_n i_o drive_v at_o in_o this_o discourse_n but_o that_o to_o grant_v work_v necessary_a unto_o salvation_n be_v all_o one_o in_o effect_n as_o to_o grant_v they_o necessary_a unto_o justification_n unfeigned_a desire_n and_o purpose_n to_o render_v unto_o the_o lord_n in_o love_n honour_n and_o service_n according_a to_o the_o benefit_n it_o expect_v to_o receive_v from_o he_o and_o that_o nothing_o but_o lack_v of_o opportunity_n hinder_v the_o real_a act_n and_o execute_v these_o desire_n and_o resolve_v with_o suitable_a endeavour_n doubtless_o that_o soul_n that_o faith_n be_v fruit_n to_o perfection_n they_o do_v not_o carry_v it_o quite_o through_o if_o they_o have_v a_o blade_n of_o profession_n yet_o they_o have_v not_o the_o ear_n of_o practice_n or_o if_o something_o of_o that_o yet_o they_o have_v not_o the_o full_a corn_n in_o the_o ear_n a_o sincere_a respect_n unto_o all_o the_o lord_n command_n but_o the_o thorn_n of_o some_o lust_n or_o other_o grow_v up_o with_o the_o word_n and_o choke_v it_o and_o overtop_n it_o have_v more_o interest_n in_o the_o heart_n than_o the_o word_n have_v draw_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n more_o to_o they_o than_o the_o word_n do_v as_o the_o thorn_n many_o time_n draw_v the_o nourish_a moisture_n of_o the_o ground_n more_o to_o they_o then_o the_o corn_n do_v that_o spring_v up_o with_o they_o and_o so_o prevent_v the_o perfect_a growth_n of_o the_o corn._n the_o word_n do_v grow_v in_o such_o man_n to_o a_o certain_a degree_n the_o word_n as_o it_o bring_v glad-tiding_n of_o salvation_n to_o sinner_n by_o the_o death_n and_o resurrection_n of_o jesus_n christ_n have_v some_o root_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o be_v receive_v with_o joy_n and_o as_o it_o promise_v salvation_n upon_o believe_v as_o they_o understand_v believe_v so_o it_o be_v a_o welcome_a word_n which_o they_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n let_v go_v and_o as_o it_o enjoin_v easy_a and_o cheap_a duty_n so_o far_o it_o have_v the_o heart_n to_o and_o thus_o far_o the_o word_n may_v grow_v up_o and_o the_o
thorn_n lust_n and_o sinful_a affection_n may_v grow_v up_o too_o and_o dwell_v together_o in_o the_o same_o man_n but_o then_o there_o be_v other_o word_n of_o the_o same_o lord_n and_o of_o the_o same_o gospel_n of_o salvation_n which_o put_v man_n upon_o deny_v themselves_o to_o please_v the_o lord_n and_o cross_v their_o own_o sinful_a inclination_n and_o will_n that_o they_o may_v fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n there_o be_v word_n that_o enjoin_v we_o to_o crucify_v the_o old-man_n with_o the_o affection_n and_o lust_n to_o mortify_v our_o member_n which_o be_v upon_o the_o earth_n to_o cut_v off_o the_o right_a hand_n and_o pluck_v out_o the_o right_a eye_n to_o put_v ourselves_o to_o the_o utmost_a extremity_n of_o suffering_n and_o distaste_v the_o flesh_n rather_o than_o to_o harbour_v any_o guest_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o distaste_n our_o dear_a lord_n but_o now_o here_o the_o word_n be_v encounter_v by_o sinful_a affection_n the_o love_n of_o man_n own_o self_n their_o ease_n their_o pleasure_n their_o reputation_n with_o man_n and_o for_o the_o maintenance_n and_o support_v of_o these_o the_o love_n and_o desire_v of_o riches_n take_v place_n with_o they_o and_o their_o desire_n and_o love_n to_o these_o put_v they_o upon_o many_o unlovely_a strain_n to_o compass_v they_o in_o a_o word_n they_o love_v to_o please_v and_o to_o be_v please_v of_o man_n and_o to_o have_v all_o thing_n go_v on_o smooth_o with_o they_o and_o here_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n and_o their_o will_n fall_v cross_a his_o honour_n to_o be_v by_o they_o uphold_v in_o a_o close_o follow_v of_o he_o and_o the_o uphold_v of_o their_o own_o honour_n among_o man_n clash_n christ_n spiritual_a interest_n and_o their_o carnal_a interest_n will_v not_o consist_v but_o one_o must_v give_v way_n if_o they_o will_v please_v the_o lord_n they_o must_v many_o time_n displease_v themselves_o and_o other_o too_o and_o to_o enjoy_v his_o love_n and_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n must_v be_v content_a to_o be_v without_o much_o and_o sometime_o to_o loose_v all_o those_o worldly_a accommodation_n which_o the_o flesh_n prize_v very_o much_o and_o however_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o word_n and_o lust_n may_v grow_v up_o together_o yet_o this_o part_n of_o the_o word_n and_o lust_n can_v remain_v in_o any_o power_n and_o operation_n in_o the_o same_o subject_n but_o will_v be_v fight_v and_o if_o the_o affection_n as_o a_o three_o party_n side_n with_o lust_n against_o the_o word_n or_o if_o more_o corditial_o adhere_v to_o they_o than_o to_o the_o word_n the_o word_n be_v present_o choke_v and_o overbear_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o the_o corn_n by_o thorn_n and_o bring_v no_o fruit_n to_o perfection_n these_o be_v the_o man_n and_o this_o their_o character_n who_o be_v the_o hearer_n and_o professor_n of_o the_o word_n of_o the_o gospel_n resemble_v by_o the_o thorny_a ground_n which_o as_o i_o intimate_v before_o go_v a_o step_n further_o than_o those_o that_o do_v believe_v for_o a_o time_n only_o and_o consequent_o must_v not_o only_o be_v such_o as_o do_v in_o a_o sense_n believe_v as_o the_o other_o do_v but_o also_o such_o as_o hold_v out_o and_o persevere_v in_o their_o faith_n unto_o the_o end_n neither_o probable_o be_v that_o the_o reason_n why_o their_o faith_n hold_v out_o rather_o than_o the_o other_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o faith_n of_o a_o better_a kind_n or_o constitution_n or_o strong_a than_o they_o but_o rather_o because_o it_o be_v not_o put_v to_o that_o stress_n and_o trial_n which_o the_o other_o faith_n can_v not_o endure_v it_o be_v very_o like_a that_o if_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o thorny-ground_n hearer_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o it_o by_o persecution_n as_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o stony-ground_n hearer_n be_v say_v to_o be_v his_o faith_n may_v give_v in_o and_o fail_v as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o for_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o stony-ground_n hearer_n faith_n fail_v he_o be_v because_o it_o be_v not_o root_v and_o ground_v in_o love_n he_o love_v his_o honour_n his_o estate_n his_o relation_n or_o at_o least_o his_o life_n more_o than_o christ_n which_o whosoever_o do_v can_v be_v his_o disciple_n or_o be_v deem_v worthy_a of_o he_o whatever_o his_o knowledge_n or_o faith_n otherwise_o may_v be_v and_o therefore_o when_o by_o the_o trial_n be_v the_o saviour_n and_o expect_v salvation_n by_o he_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n bear_v some_o good_a affection_n to_o he_o yet_o their_o love_n work_v strong_a to_o riches_n honour_n and_o pleasure_n &_o for_o their_o sake_n to_o way_n and_o thing_n by_o which_o these_o may_v be_v enjoy_v thence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o lust_n of_o these_o thing_n carry_v it_o against_o christ_n and_o his_o word_n who_o draw_v another_o way_n now_o because_o this_o sort_n of_o man_n may_v hold_v that_o dead_a faith_n which_o they_o have_v and_o the_o profession_n of_o it_o too_o
