what_o he_o have_v purchase_v in_o satisfy_v the_o first_o covenant_n answ._n 1._o this_o mis-representeth_a god_n way_n of_o covenant_v who_o have_v not_o appoint_v our_o pay_v of_o a_o small_a rent_n as_o it_o be_v a_o penny_n to_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o right_n unto_o christ_n purchase_n but_o see_v christ_n become_v cautioner_n in_o our_o name_n to_o pay_v the_o debt_n he_o have_v heighten_v they_o above_o their_o own_o place_n which_o derogate_v to_o the_o way_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v lay_v down_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n for_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o exceed_v in_o reference_n to_o any_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o consider_v in_o itself_o whereas_o when_o faith_n be_v only_o respect_v as_o it_o apprehend_v christ_n it_o can_v be_v so_o consider_v for_o it_o not_o but_o over_o one_o congregation_n and_o to_o say_v that_o he_o have_v power_n and_o jurisdiction_n over_o other_o preaching-officer_n and_o so_o be_v not_o a_o preaching-officer_n of_o the_o low_a degree_n and_o that_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o other_o inferior_a preaching-officer_n which_o necessary_o imply_v that_o that_o bishop_n be_v of_o the_o low_a degree_n if_o i_o say_v these_o thing_n implicate_v not_o we_o can_v tell_v what_o do_v for_o the_o one_o thing_n say_v he_o have_v none_o under_o he_o the_o other_o say_v he_o be_v not_o one_o of_o the_o low_a neither_o will_v any_o have_v this_o to_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o inferior_a order_n to_o be_v institute_v after_o the_o apostle_n day_n over_o which_o these_o bishop_n be_v to_o govern_v for_o 1._o it_o must_v be_v make_v out_o that_o there_o be_v a_o appointment_n in_o the_o word_n for_o institute_v of_o such_o a_o officer_n which_o be_v not_o then_o in_o the_o church_n 2._o it_o will_v yet_o follow_v that_o during_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n this_o bishop_n do_v discharge_v the_o office_n of_o presbyter_n and_o so_o be_v the_o low_a preaching-officer_n in_o the_o church_n and_o that_o therefore_o the_o contradiction_n will_v have_v be_v still_o obvious_a in_o that_o time_n and_o they_o have_v be_v liable_a unto_o this_o same_o argument_n 3._o if_o they_o have_v then_o any_o jurisdiction_n over_o presbyter_n it_o behove_v to_o be_v a_o non-ens_a while_o they_o have_v no_o be_v and_o that_o for_o many_o year_n which_o look_v not_o like_o christ_n way_n in_o give_v talent_n to_o man_n and_o indeed_o when_o all_o be_v consider_v see_v these_o bishop_n do_v nothing_o but_o what_o we_o allow_v ordinary_a minister_n to_o do_v and_o have_v the_o same_o qualification_n appoint_v for_o they_o and_o the_o same_o place_n in_o the_o church_n to_o wit_n to_o be_v next_o before_o to_o deacon_n and_o have_v only_a charge_n of_o particular_a congregation_n and_o such_o like_a it_o will_v be_v most_o safe_a to_o conclude_v they_o to_o have_v be_v bishop_n and_o presbyter_n in_o the_o sense_n that_o former_o we_o lay_v down_o and_o so_o we_o leave_v any_o further_a consideration_n of_o this_o author_n concern_v the_o way_n of_o covenant_v with_o god_n and_o of_o a_o sinner_n obtain_v justification_n before_o he_o this_o last_o epistle_n direct_v to_o the_o church_n of_o laodicea_n do_v contain_v a_o short_a sum_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o god_n way_n of_o engage_v sinner_n to_o he_o it_o will_v therefore_o be_v meet_a to_o take_v some_o more_o particular_a consideration_n thereof_o for_o here_o 1._o we_o have_v man_n describe_v in_o his_o sinful_a condition_n â—s_v miserable_a naked_a poor_a and_o withal_o blind_a and_o ignorant_a of_o the_o same_o 2._o we_o have_v the_o remedy_n propose_v to_o wit_n gold_n and_o white_a raiment_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n which_o be_v the_o great_a promise_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n as_o the_o mid_n lead_v to_o the_o enjoy_v of_o god_n 3._o there_o be_v the_o condition_n on_o which_o this_o be_v offer_v that_o be_v believe_v express_v under_o the_o term_n of_o buy_v open_v to_o he_o hear_v his_o voice_n etc._n etc._n 4._o there_o be_v motive_n whereby_o the_o acceptance_n of_o this_o offer_n upon_o such_o term_n be_v press_v and_o that_o both_o from_o the_o of_o the_o same_o of_o such_o sort_n may_v be_v the_o polygamy_n of_o several_a godly_a man_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o to_o be_v justify_v at_o least_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o extent_n thereof_o in_o all_o as_o to_o be_v so_o ordinary_a to_o have_v so_o many_o wife_n to_o have_v they_o of_o such_o consanguinity_n as_o sister_n etc._n etc._n of_o such_o sort_n may_v be_v the_o error_n which_o be_v maintain_v by_o many_o of_o the_o godly_a in_o the_o primitive_a time_n concern_v meat_n day_n etc._n etc._n which_o not_o be_v know_v by_o they_o to_o be_v sin_n can_v be_v say_v explicit_o to_o have_v be_v repent_v of_o yet_o that_o they_o be_v impenitent_a it_o can_v be_v say_v under_o this_o also_o comein_a many_o matter_n of_o fact_n which_o be_v forget_v not_o observe_v or_o consider_v as_o appear_v from_o psal._n 19_o lord_n purge_v i_o from_o secret_a sin_n the_o last_o be_v to_o be_v account_v necessary_a to_o pardon_v to_o wit_n that_o they_o be_v penitent_a but_o the_o first_o to_o wit_n that_o repentance_n shall_v be_v explicit_a with_o respect_n to_o every_o particular_a sin_n they_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v esteem_v necessary_a in_o this_o absolute_a sense_n distict_v 2._o repentance_n be_v either_o actual_a and_o that_o for_o particular_a sin_n as_o when_o peter_n repent_v of_o his_o denial_n and_o david_n of_o his_o murder_n etc._n etc._n or_o it_o be_v interpretative_a and_o virtual_a as_o when_o a_o man_n be_v hearty_o affect_v for_o such_o and_o such_o a_o particular_a sin_n and_o for_o the_o corrupt_a inclination_n and_o body_n of_o death_n that_o be_v in_o he_o that_o be_v the_o seed_n of_o all_o although_o there_o be_v some_o particular_a sin_n which_o be_v either_o not_o know_v to_o he_o to_o be_v such_o or_o be_v not_o actual_o in_o his_o mind_n and_o so_o can_v be_v particular_o and_o actual_o repent_v of_o yet_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o virtual_o he_o do_v repent_v of_o the_o same_o because_o 1._o he_o do_v repent_v of_o all_o sin_n in_o the_o root_n and_o seed_n thereof_o and_o he_o may_v well_o be_v construct_v to_o repent_v of_o and_o to_o loathe_v all_o the_o branch_n and_o member_n when_o he_o be_v serious_o humble_v under_o the_o impression_n of_o the_o indwelling_a root_n and_o body_n of_o death_n 2._o because_o he_o repent_v of_o the_o sin_n which_o be_v know_v to_o he_o upon_o the_o account_n which_o be_v common_a to_o all_o sin_n as_o sin_n to_o wit_n its_o dis-conformity_n to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o may_v well_o be_v construct_v to_o repent_v virtual_o of_o all_o the_o sin_n he_o be_v guilty_a of_o because_o that_o which_o be_v the_o essence_n and_o form_n to_o speak_v so_o of_o every_o sin_n be_v detest_v by_o he_o as_o it_o be_v be_v consider_v appretiative_o that_o be_v when_o sin_n be_v see_v and_o acknowledge_v and_o though_o there_o be_v no_o such_o intense_a sorrow_n or_o so_o sensible_o affect_v the_o heart_n yet_o sin_n be_v account_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v sorrowed-for_a and_o the_o heart_n be_v weight_v that_o its_o sorrow_n be_v not_o deep_o and_o the_o person_n reckon_v itself_o so_o far_o under_o the_o body_n of_o death_n as_o it_o can_v be_v answerable_a to_o its_o light_n in_o the_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n this_o last_o may_v have_v the_o native_a effect_n of_o repentance_n to_o wit_n the_o humble_v of_o the_o sinner_n etc._n etc._n without_o the_o former_a therefore_o at_o least_o the_o former_a be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a mark_v here_o that_o the_o use_n of_o this_o distinction_n be_v exceed_o different_a from_o the_o use_n which_o papist_n make_v thereof_o to_o wit_n for_o support_v of_o a_o ruinous_a inherent_a righteousness_n whereof_o repentance_n be_v a_o part_n and_o because_o they_o can_v find_v it_o in_o that_o intensnesse_n as_o may_v stand_v before_o justice_n therefore_o they_o coin_v a_o sort_n of_o appretiative_a repentance_n which_o to_o they_o be_v a_o desire_n and_o endeavour_v in_o the_o uttermost_a degree_n possible_a to_o attain_v the_o former_a that_o so_o they_o may_v underprop_v the_o other_o that_o be_v like_o toruine_n or_o put_v this_o in_o its_o room_n but_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n here_o for_o as_o we_o understand_v the_o appretiative_a repentance_n it_o be_v to_o commend_v grace_n and_o humble_v we_o the_o more_o but_o as_o they_o do_v it_o be_v to_o support_v work_n and_o can_v never_o give_v a_o conscience_n quietness_n because_o it_o be_v still_o defective_a even_o in_o what_o it_o may_v attain_v whereof_o we_o possible_o shall_v say_v somewhat_o elsewhere_o dist._n 4._o repentance_n may_v be_v consider_v as_o prevalent_a and_o take_v up_o the_o whole_a man_n and_o thus_o it_o carry_v with_o it_o a_o sutablnesse_n in_o a_o man_n affection_n and_o action_n as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o david_n psal._n 51._o or_o it_o may_v be_v consider_v as_o in_o the_o renew_a part_n which_o may_v be_v lament_a such_o sensible_a evidence_n to_o other_o or_o it_o may_v be_v any_o sensible_a change_n to_o the_o person_n itself_o yet_o may_v there_o be_v real_a repentance_n indeed_o before_o god_n this_o may_v be_v say_v of_o solomon_n of_o who_o repentance_n and_o pardon_n we_o can_v doubt_v as_o also_o of_o asa_n yet_o have_v the_o lord_n leave_v they_o in_o his_o word_n under_o such_o a_o cloud_n that_o their_o change_n have_v not_o be_v at_o least_o very_o discernible_a for_o we_o find_v these_o high_a place_n that_o be_v build_v by_o solomon_n continue_v unremoved_a for_o many_o geneâ—â—tions_n thereafter_o which_o do_v certain_o show_v that_o his_o repentance_n have_v not_o have_v so_o palpable_a a_o change_n before_o man_n as_o that_o of_o manasses_n have_v and_o this_o be_v order_v by_o the_o lord_n in_o deep_a wisdom_n partly_o for_o a_o chastisement_n of_o their_o backslide_n partly_o to_o terrify_v other_o from_o the_o way_n of_o decline_a and_o partly_o to_o make_v all_o man_n sober_a and_o spare_v to_o pass_v sentence_n upon_o the_o state_n of_o other_o however_o their_o condition_n may_v look_v before_o man_n when_o they_o be_v remove_v for_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v the_o sovereign_a and_o infallible_a decision_n of_o their_o state_n to_o wit_n whether_o they_o be_v penitent_n and_o believer_n or_o not_o leave_v unto_o himself_o alone_o who_o have_v a_o can_v agree_v to_o neither_o member_n therefore_o it_o can_v be_v admit_v it_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o the_o redeem_a who_o praise_n for_o they_o be_v all_o absolute_o redeem_v and_o make_v king_n and_o priest_n to_o god_n etc._n etc._n nor_o will_v it_o agree_v to_o the_o past-by_a multitude_n of_o the_o un-redeemed_n that_o be_v contradistinguish_v from_o the_o former_a because_o first_o the_o place_n do_v assert_v the_o actual_a enjoyment_n of_o friendship_n with_o god_n and_o be_v make_v king_n and_o priest_n etc._n etc._n to_o be_v the_o proper_a fruit_n of_o christ_n blood_n and_o purchase_n and_o not_o the_o have_v of_o these_o thing_n make_v possible_a upon_o a_o condition_n as_o be_v former_o lay_v down_o second_o because_o that_o past-by_a multitude_n be_v express_o contradistinguish_v from_o the_o redeem_v and_o these_o who_o partake_v of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n purchase_n and_o therefore_o the_o one_o be_v call_v the_o redeem_v the_o other_o may_v be_v call_v non-redeemed_n and_o they_o be_v distinguish_v from_o and_o oppose_v to_o the_o other_o here_o not_o by_o any_o distinction_n simple_o found_v upon_o the_o effect_n of_o christ_n death_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o one_o be_v make_v king_n and_o priest_n and_o the_o other_o not_o but_o it_o look_v to_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n procure_v these_o effect_n and_o make_v they_o certain_a to_o must_v be_v such_o who_o be_v no_o way_n redeem_v for_o what_o must_v be_v say_v of_o the_o one_o as_o to_o redemption_n by_o christ_n blood_n must_v be_v deny_v of_o the_o other_o for_o thus_o not_o to_o be_v among_o the_o redeem_v be_v indeed_o to_o be_v un-redeemed_n this_o will_v strong_o militate_v against_o any_o who_o shall_v restrict_n this_o conditional_a redemption_n to_o the_o visible_a church_n for_o that_o will_v make_v upon_o the_o one_o side_n two_o class_n of_o such_o as_o be_v redeem_v to_o wit_n some_o absolute_o and_o some_o conditional_o to_o be_v such_o whereas_o the_o text_n do_v acknowledge_v but_o one_o and_o it_o will_v also_o constitute_v two_o class_n of_o the_o un-redeemed_n to_o wit_n some_o that_o be_v without_o the_o visible_a church_n and_o conditional_a covenant_n and_o some_o that_o be_v within_o whereas_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o these_o within_o the_o church_n who_o belong_v not_o to_o christ_n be_v equal_o contradistinguish_v from_o the_o redeem_v with_o other_o that_o be_v without_o in_o the_o three_o place_n this_o opinion_n will_v not_o be_v find_v consistent_a with_o reason_n draw_v from_o the_o scripture_n as_o 1._o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o christ_n satisfaction_n and_o intercession_n must_v be_v of_o equal_a extent_n see_v they_o be_v both_o part_n of_o his_o priestly_a office_n and_o it_o be_v his_o satisfaction_n that_o regulate_v to_o say_v so_o his_o intercession_n now_o it_o be_v clear_a in_o scripture_n that_o christ_n intercession_n be_v qualify_v by_o god_n decree_n of_o election_n therefore_o he_o pray_v joh._n 17._o for_o these_o who_o god_n have_v give_v he_o whereby_o it_o be_v not_o only_o imply_v that_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v for_o the_o world_n which_o be_v not_o give_v he_o but_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o conditional_a satisfy_n for_o and_o redeem_v of_o all_z than_o we_o can_v say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o conditional_a pray_v for_o all_o and_o we_o can_v say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o conditional_a intercession_n for_o all_o see_v he_o do_v so_o express_o and_o absolute_o exclude_v the_o reprobate_a world_n from_o his_o prayer_n and_o upon_o that_o imply_v ground_n because_o god_n do_v not_o own_v they_o as_o he_o and_o have_v not_o give_v they_o to_o the_o mediator_n to_o be_v own_v and_o redeem_v by_o he_o therefore_o he_o do_v solemn_o
be_v former_o observe_v therefore_o it_o must_v be_v something_o that_o can_v no_o otherways_o be_v procure_v but_o by_o christ_n purchase_n and_o according_a to_o what_o be_v say_v it_o be_v not_o purchase_v to_o any_o reprobate_n though_o it_o be_v necessary_a for_o their_o obtain_n of_o any_o benefit_n of_o christ_n purchase_n therefore_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v redeem_v for_o at_o most_o it_o say_v that_o they_o be_v redeem_v upon_o a_o condition_n which_o they_o can_v never_o possible_o perform_v and_o this_o will_v infer_v that_o they_o be_v not_o redeem_v at_o all_o for_o a_o peremptory_a exclusive_a conditional_a offer_n where_o the_o condition_n be_v impossible_a and_o know_v to_o be_v so_o to_o the_o offerer_n be_v equipollent_a to_o a_o absolute_a refusal_n as_o suppose_v one_o will_v offer_v to_o relieve_v another_o from_o bondage_n or_o to_o pay_v their_o debt_n for_o they_o upon_o condition_n and_o no_o otherways_o that_o such_o a_o person_n shall_v at_o once_o drink_v up_o the_o whole_a sea_n that_o offer_n so_o circumstantiate_v can_v not_o be_v look_v upon_o otherways_o but_o as_o a_o absolute_a refusal_n again_o if_o he_o have_v not_o purchase_v faith_n to_o they_o then_o there_o be_v no_o save_v grace_n purchase_v to_o they_o and_o if_o neither_o faith_n nor_o any_o save_a grace_n be_v purchase_v to_o they_o it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o say_v that_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o such_o for_o who_o no_o save_a grace_n be_v purchase_v five_o we_o say_v further_o if_o all_o man_n be_v conditional_o redeem_v then_o we_o must_v say_v that_o all_o the_o midse_n necessary_o concur_v in_o the_o work_n of_o redemption_n for_o make_v of_o it_o complete_a must_v be_v conditional_o purchase_v also_o for_o as_o by_o the_o acknowledge_a ground_n that_o be_v call_v absolute_a redemption_n wherein_o faith_n and_o all_o the_o midse_n be_v absolute_o purchase_v so_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o in_o this_o conditional_a redemption_n all_o these_o midse_n must_v be_v conditional_o purchase_v for_o the_o end_n and_o midse_n be_v in_o one_o bargain_n where_o the_o one_o be_v purchase_v the_o other_o be_v purchase_v so_o where_o the_o one_o be_v absolute_o purchase_v the_o other_o be_v so_o also_o and_o therefore_o where_o the_o one_o be_v conditional_o purchase_v the_o other_o must_v be_v so_o also_o but_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o the_o midse_n to_o wit_n faith_n regeneration_n and_o other_o grace_n be_v conditional_o purchase_v because_o this_o will_v be_v the_o sense_n thereof_o that_o christ_n have_v
