goodness_n as_o the_o perfection_n of_o our_o felicity_n and_o also_o to_o be_v accompany_v with_o action_n suitable_a thereunto_o and_o he_o that_o read_v the_o prayer_n with_o a_o ramble_a have_v without_o such_o due_a expression_n of_o devotion_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o his_o speech_n and_o action_n quite_o alter_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n and_o spoil_v the_o design_n of_o it_o every_o man_n of_o any_o sense_n can_v discern_v the_o indecency_n of_o read_v such_o word_n as_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o christ_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o with_o such_o a_o manner_n of_o speak_v as_o signify_v but_o little_a devotion_n and_o fervency_n of_o mind_n and_o so_o they_o may_v also_o of_o say_v the_o gloria_fw-la patri_fw-la and_o te_fw-la deum_fw-la &c_n &c_n without_o such_o cheerfulness_n of_o speech_n and_o reverend_a act_n of_o adoration_n as_o become_v the_o same_o neither_o can_v we_o think_v that_o we_o honour_n god_n by_o any_o word_n we_o speak_v if_o we_o do_v not_o appear_v fervous_a and_o devout_a in_o pronounce_v the_o same_o nor_o will_v it_o at_o all_o edify_v ourselves_o or_o other_o for_o word_n do_v not_o work_v here_o as_o spell_n and_o charm_n but_o as_o rational_a instrument_n that_o signify_v the_o belief_n and_o affection_n of_o our_o soul_n which_o they_o can_v do_v but_o by_o be_v so_o pronounce_v and_o accompany_v with_o fit_a action_n as_o aforesaid_a so_o that_o upon_o these_o reason_n the_o reader_n be_v oblige_v to_o the_o expression_n of_o devotion_n in_o his_o performance_n of_o this_o service_n but_o beside_o he_o that_o be_v careless_a in_o make_v such_o expression_n of_o devotion_n in_o read_v the_o prayer_n do_v very_o much_o to_o prevent_v the_o conversion_n of_o infidel_n and_o papist_n to_o excuse_v the_o nonconformity_n of_o all_o kind_n of_o separatist_n and_o to_o encourage_v the_o profane_a in_o their_o neglect_n to_o attend_v these_o sacred_a office_n to_o explain_v this_o i_o must_v entreat_v the_o reader_n to_o consider_v that_o notwithstanding_o the_o confusion_n of_o tongue_n there_o be_v one_o universal_a language_n understand_v by_o all_o mankind_n high_a and_o low_a the_o ignorant_a as_o well_o as_o the_o learned_a and_o those_o that_o know_v not_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n we_o speak_v or_o can_v well_o perceive_v whether_o we_o speak_v sense_n or_o nonsense_n yet_o by_o this_o can_v give_v account_n of_o what_o we_o say_v or_o do_v as_o to_o the_o general_a tendency_n thereof_o and_o this_o language_n consist_v in_o the_o tone_n of_o our_o word_n and_o mode_n of_o our_o action_n by_o these_o they_o know_v whether_o a_o man_n mean_v love_n or_o hatred_n anger_n or_o good_a pleasure_n honour_n or_o contempt_n in_o common_a conversation_n and_o so_o they_o may_v do_v also_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n they_o know_v by_o these_o whether_o a_o man_n be_v in_o the_o church_n mean_v the_o adoration_n of_o a_o god_n or_o a_o fantastic_a observation_n of_o person_n or_o thing_n there_o present_a whether_o he_o mean_v a_o natural_a delight_n in_o exercise_v his_o gift_n and_o natural_a power_n and_o in_o attend_v to_o the_o music_n of_o word_n voice_n or_o instrument_n for_o there_o be_v no_o great_a difference_n if_o no_o more_o be_v mean_v or_o a_o spiritual_a employment_n of_o his_o mind_n upon_o god_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o religion_n as_o his_o chief_a joy_n and_o this_o kind_n of_o language_n for_o so_o 〈◊〉_d here_o call_v it_o as_o it_o be_v understand_v most_o general_o so_o it_o work_v most_o powerful_o on_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n and_o dispose_v they_o to_o believe_v what_o it_o express_v more_o than_o any_o rhetoric_n of_o word_n can_v do_v and_o though_o these_o expression_n as_o well_o as_o that_o of_o word_n require_v some_o caution_n for_o the_o right_a understanding_n they_o and_o may_v be_v abuse_v by_o hypocrite_n to_o cheat_v and_o deceive_v the_o world_n yet_o since_o according_a to_o man_n understanding_n of_o they_o and_o till_o they_o be_v convince_v of_o the_o hypocrifie_n they_o do_v incline_v and_o affect_v their_o mind_n man_n be_v to_o account_v themselves_o concern_v to_o make_v such_o expression_n for_o their_o conviction_n and_o edification_n and_o that_o the_o rather_o because_o else_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n will_v be_v betray_v to_o those_o that_o lie_v in_o wait_n to_o deceive_v by_o such_o false_a appearance_n and_o it_o be_v not_o a_o thing_n arbitrary_a and_o at_o man_n liberty_n whether_o they_o will_v use_v these_o expression_n or_o not_o for_o since_o they_o be_v so_o significant_a of_o our_o adoration_n of_o god_n or_o fervency_n in_o our_o prayer_n to_o he_o and_o exultancy_n in_o his_o praise_n we_o must_v be_v oblige_v thereunto_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o command_v of_o worship_v god_n of_o so_o pray_v and_o praise_v as_o be_v worthy_a of_o he_o beside_o the_o many_o example_n of_o this_o in_o scripture_n and_o indeed_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n be_v so_o apt_a to_o be_v incline_v by_o these_o that_o they_o will_v scarce_o believe_v we_o true_o mean_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n except_o we_o express_v it_o by_o such_o sign_n now_o to_o apply_v this_o to_o the_o present_a purpose_n all_o nation_n according_a to_o that_o knowledge_n which_o natural_o they_o have_v of_o this_o have_v institute_v and_o practise_v such_o expression_n of_o their_o honour_n and_o respect_n unto_o the_o god_n they_o worship_v and_o the_o more_o the_o papist_n have_v decline_v from_o the_o substance_n of_o true_a piety_n the_o more_o they_o have_v endeavour_v to_o keep_v up_o the_o reputation_n of_o it_o by_o outward_a sign_n of_o devotion_n and_o a_o sect_n as_o they_o have_v former_o so_o do_v the_o still_o make_v the_o appearance_n of_o extraordinary_a devotion_n as_o mean_n to_o introduce_v the_o error_n and_o schism_n now_o take_v this_o for_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v part_n of_o the_o law_n write_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n that_o what_o ever_o be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v god_n be_v to_o bâ—_n worship_v and_o adore_v and_o that_o as_o thâ—_n name_v of_o god_n be_v great_a and_o dreadful_a so_o hiâ—_n worship_n shall_v be_v awful_a and_o serious_a and_o that_o they_o all_o undestand_v by_o the_o mean_v foremention_v when_o it_o appear_v to_o be_v so_o i_o say_v on_o such_o premise_n we_o may_v conclude_v that_o be_v our_o religion_n never_o so_o good_a neither_o papist_n nor_o sectary_n will_v ever_o be_v incline_v tâ—_n consider_v it_o nor_o bring_v to_o embrace_v iâ—_n while_o they_o perceive_v a_o defect_n of_o these_o expression_n of_o devotion_n in_o our_o most_o solemn_a office_n of_o divine_a worship_n and_o whilst_o theâ—_n think_v they_o outdo_v we_o in_o a_o matter_n they_o be_v so_o certain_a to_o be_v good_a and_o well-pleasing_a tâ—_n god_n and_o profitable_a to_o men._n and_o i_o believe_v there_o can_v scarce_o be_v assign_v a_o more_o probable_a cause_n then_o this_o of_o the_o great_a averseness_n both_o of_o papist_n and_o separatist_n to_o join_v in_o our_o common-prayerâ—_a for_o both_o these_o have_v great_a appearance_n oâ—_n devotion_n in_o their_o several_a way_n the_o papist_n in_o their_o frequent_a bow_v and_o other_o act_n of_o adoration_n the_o fanatic_n in_o their_o seem_a fervency_n and_o seriousness_n in_o extemporary_a prayer_n and_o these_o latter_a in_o who_o we_o be_v most_o concern_v be_v necessitate_v to_o some_o kind_n of_o seriousness_n and_o intention_n as_o that_o without_o which_o no_o man_n can_v pray_v in_o that_o way_n with_o any_o tolerable_a sense_n and_o method_n and_o many_o who_o with_o great_a intention_n and_o seriousness_n can_v scarce_o do_v either_o be_v the_o more_o oblige_v to_o a_o great_a fervency_n at_o least_o in_o show_n in_o call_v on_o the_o name_n of_o god_n with_o seem_a earnestness_n and_o to_o use_v his_o title_n and_o attribute_n over_o and_o over_o and_o all_o to_o cover_v the_o defect_n of_o their_o invention_n but_o this_o however_o look_v like_o the_o expression_n of_o a_o great_a devotion_n and_o be_v so_o understand_v by_o the_o unwary_a multitude_n if_o therefore_o they_o perceive_v no_o expression_n in_o our_o way_n that_o bear_v proportion_n to_o the_o same_o it_o be_v impossible_a but_o they_o will_v prefer_v
in_o these_o holy_a exercise_n of_o god_n worship_n which_o by_o the_o prevalency_n of_o false_a opinion_n and_o vicious_a practice_n be_v great_o decay_v and_o i_o have_v do_v it_o with_o full_a persuasion_n of_o mind_n but_o without_o contempt_n of_o any_o that_o be_v otherwise_o affect_v i_o pity_v all_o that_o will_v not_o make_v a_o through_o trial_n of_o the_o felicity_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o of_o this_o practice_n of_o holiness_n which_o be_v according_a to_o the_o example_n of_o the_o ancient_a and_o pure_a time_n and_o as_o purge_v from_o all_o superstition_n and_o fanaticism_n for_o such_o i_o think_v be_v that_o i_o recommend_v and_o i_o be_o the_o more_o move_v to_o this_o compassion_n by_o the_o experience_n i_o have_v of_o the_o good_a success_n of_o this_o practice_n in_o myself_o i_o be_v breed_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o piety_n in_o another_o way_n and_o endeavour_v to_o be_v devout_a therein_o as_o my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o i_o ought_v i_o converse_v with_o the_o wise_a and_o best_a i_o live_v with_o and_o have_v some_o interest_n among_o they_o to_o persuade_v i_o to_o a_o continuance_n in_o that_o way_n but_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o bring_v in_o another_o order_n i_o think_v it_o my_o duty_n to_o consider_v well_o before_o i_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o fix_a disobedience_n i_o think_v i_o can_v not_o express_v the_o honour_n i_o owe_v to_o my_o superior_n if_o i_o shall_v refuse_v to_o consider_v what_o be_v say_v for_o obedience_n to_o their_o law_n nor_o yet_o the_o love_n i_o shall_v have_v for_o communion_n and_o people_n in_o this_o book_n that_o they_o which_o conform_v may_v do_v it_o so_o devout_o as_o may_v he_o to_o the_o comfort_n of_o themselves_o and_o attract_v other_o to_o our_o communion_n and_o i_o have_v insinuate_v some_o argument_n to_o enforce_v the_o same_o as_o so_o brief_a a_o discourse_n will_v permit_v which_o with_o the_o former_a i_o recommend_v unto_o god_n blessing_n and_o a_o candid_a interpretation_n be_v resolve_v to_o make_v no_o more_o addition_n thereunto_o although_o it_o shall_v have_v the_o good_a hap_n to_o be_v print_v again_o i_o hope_v they_o will_v not_o their_o mind_n and_o life_n a_o preface_n concern_v divine_a worship_n the_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v a_o thing_n much_o talk_v of_o and_o that_o with_o great_a reverence_n by_o many_o who_o have_v not_o as_o i_o think_v such_o apprehension_n of_o it_o as_o they_o ought_v and_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n of_o some_o it_o be_v as_o much_o slight_v as_o if_o there_o be_v something_o of_o fanaticism_n in_o all_o pretence_n to_o devotion_n my_o design_n therefore_o in_o this_o preface_n shall_v be_v to_o beget_v right_a thought_n about_o it_o and_o a_o due_a esteem_n thereof_o as_o i_o become_v almost_o quite_o out_o of_o use_n among_o they_o i_o can_v imagine_v for_o my_o own_o part_n any_o other_o reason_n why_o these_o solemn_a action_n shall_v become_v so_o whole_o disuse_v for_o i_o can_v believe_v that_o any_o who_o be_v acquaint_v with_o what_o be_v write_v of_o the_o former_a or_o present_a custom_n of_o the_o world_n can_v be_v ignorant_a what_o the_o usage_n thereof_o have_v ever_o be_v and_o still_o be_v in_o worship_v whatever_o they_o call_v god_n nor_o do_v i_o ever_o hear_v it_o prove_v that_o their_o common_a sense_n do_v herein_o deceive_v they_o that_o these_o two_o word_n bow_v and_o worship_v be_v almost_o every_o where_n in_o scripture_n join_v together_o and_o those_o that_o have_v read_v ecclesiastical_a history_n or_o converse_v with_o any_o of_o other_o churebes_n even_o those_o that_o never_o be_v of_o the_o popish_a communion_n will_v find_v that_o it_o be_v not_o the_o papist_n only_a among_o christian_n that_o abound_v in_o these_o solemn_a act_n of_o adoration_n but_o that_o they_o ever_o be_v and_o still_o be_v use_v by_o all_o christian_n and_o by_o some_o as_o much_o if_o not_o more_o than_o by_o they_o except_o only_o those_o who_o i_o speak_v of_o who_o have_v forsake_v they_o on_o the_o account_n aforesaid_a certain_o there_o be_v some_o reason_n upon_o which_o this_o common_a consent_n be_v ground_v and_o for_o which_o this_o expression_n have_v ever_o be_v make_v by_o good_a man_n of_o the_o worship_n and_o honour_n they_o desire_v to_o give_v to_o almighty_a god_n and_o have_v ever_o be_v accept_v
