a_o kind_n of_o holy_a poetry_n even_o as_o grammar_n will_v be_v a_o necessary_a help_n to_o translate_v the_o psalm_n into_o english_a so_o poetry_n will_v be_v requisite_a to_o translate_v the_o english_a into_o verse_n and_o such_o kind_n of_o help_n though_o they_o be_v not_o express_o command_v by_o god_n yet_o we_o look_v at_o they_o as_o warrant_v by_o necessary_a consequence_n from_o necessary_a warrant_n of_o such_o mean_n as_o do_v natural_o and_o necessary_o lead_v to_o those_o end_n and_o without_o which_o those_o end_n without_o a_o miracle_n can_v be_v otain_v we_o speak_v therefore_o of_o such_o mean_n and_o help_v of_o worship_n forbid_v in_o this_o commandment_n not_o which_o do_v natural_o and_o necessary_o help_v forward_o the_o same_o though_o remote_o but_o of_o then_o for_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a that_o all_o the_o people_n shall_v join_v in_o voice_n as_o well_o as_o in_o heart_n in_o the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n it_o be_v therefore_o necessary_a they_o shall_v know_v beforehand_o the_o same_o set_a form_n of_o word_n in_o which_o they_o shall_v all_o join_v and_o see_v a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n in_o psalm_n be_v necessary_a it_o please_v the_o preach_v and_o public_a prayer_n as_o in_o sing_v this_o or_o that_o form_n be_v necessary_a in_o neither_o a_o set_a form_n be_v necessary_a in_o both_o the_o people_n can_v sing_v with_o the_o minister_n unless_o what_o be_v sing_v be_v represent_v to_o they_o in_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n nor_o can_v they_o join_v in_o prayer_n or_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n preach_v unless_o the_o matter_n of_o pray_v or_o preach_v be_v convey_v to_o they_o in_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n answ_n you_o confound_v a_o form_n of_o word_n understand_v and_o a_o set_a form_n it_o be_v true_a no_o man_n can_v join_v in_o prayer_n or_o attend_v unto_o the_o word_n preach_v unless_o the_o matter_n of_o prayer_n or_o preach_v be_v convey_v in_o a_o form_n of_o word_n understand_v but_o yet_o form_n of_o word_n according_a to_o the_o present_a occasion_n which_o he_o never_o hear_v before_o as_o in_o a_o set_a form_n which_o he_o hear_v every_o day_n disc_n but_o you_o demand_v be_v a_o minister_n able_a to_o express_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o people_n or_o the_o doctrine_n of_o salvation_n in_o a_o form_n of_o word_n devise_v and_o study_v by_o himself_o and_o be_v he_o not_o able_a by_o meditation_n and_o study_n to_o dictate_v and_o compose_v a_o psalm_n to_o be_v sing_v by_o the_o people_n as_o occasion_n require_v and_o if_o so_o be_v not_o a_o stint_a form_n of_o sing_v devise_v by_o man_n a_o arbitrary_a help_n to_o he_o and_o so_o forbid_v answ_n 2._o many_o a_o good_a minister_n that_o be_v able_a to_o express_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o people_n or_o the_o doctrine_n of_o salvation_n in_o a_o form_n of_o word_n devise_v and_o study_v by_o himself_o be_v not_o able_a so_o to_o dictate_v and_o compose_v a_o psalm_n to_o be_v sing_v by_o the_o people_n each_o several_a occasion_n no_o though_o he_o shall_v meditate_v and_o study_v hard_a for_o it_o poetry_n be_v not_o every_o good_a scholar_n faculty_n nor_o the_o pen_n of_o holy_a psalm_n the_o skill_n of_o every_o good_a minister_n nor_o be_v it_o require_v that_o it_o shall_v for_o see_v the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v already_o dictate_v and_o compose_v to_o our_o hand_n divers_a form_n of_o psalm_n for_o all_o occasion_n it_o will_v be_v superfluous_a for_o minister_n to_o take_v up_o their_o meditation_n and_o study_n about_o the_o invent_v other_o form_n though_o they_o have_v gift_n fit_a for_o it_o and_o therefore_o if_o such_o as_o have_v the_o skill_n to_o pen_v psalm_n do_v nevertheless_o sing_v the_o form_n of_o psalm_n set_v and_o compose_v by_o david_n and_o other_o prophet_n as_o they_o can_v be_v say_v therein_o to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o invention_n of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n institution_n so_o neither_o can_v they_o be_v say_v to_o sin_n upon_o the_o other_o respect_n which_o you_o mention_v because_o they_o use_v a_o help_n to_o they_o not_o necessary_a whereas_o other_o that_o want_n their_o skill_n do_v lawful_o use_v david_n psalm_n because_o such_o a_o help_n to_o they_o be_v not_o arbitrary_a but_o necessary_a no_o no_o we_o do_v not_o approve_v of_o that_o distinction_n between_o arbitrary_a and_o necessary_a in_o that_o sense_n to_o that_o purpose_n in_o that_o sense_n i_o say_v for_o i_o here_o see_v you_o work_v upon_o a_o equivocation_n in_o this_o word_n necessary_a for_o there_o be_v a_o double_a necessity_n speak_v of_o in_o this_o case_n a_o set_a form_n of_o worship_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v necessary_a either_o through_o sinful_a defect_n in_o man_n who_o shall_v be_v
able_a but_o be_v not_o to_o conceive_v a_o form_n of_o worship_n of_o themselves_o or_o else_o through_o the_o nature_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o worship_n itself_o which_o can_v be_v perform_v but_o in_o a_o set_a form_n whatsoever_o the_o gift_n of_o man_n be_v in_o this_o latter_a sense_n not_o in_o the_o former_a be_v the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n in_o a_o set_a form_n necessary_a for_o unless_o a_o psalm_n be_v express_v in_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n and_o so_o set_v before_o the_o people_n all_o the_o people_n can_v join_v in_o voice_n as_o well_o as_o heart_n sing_n and_o praise_v god_n together_o in_o the_o same_o word_n we_o admit_v of_o no_o necessity_n of_o any_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n or_o other_o worship_n in_o the_o former_a sense_n as_o concern_v such_o man_n unfit_a to_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o want_v gift_n to_o conceive_v a_o prayer_n according_a to_o the_o present_a occasion_n but_o a_o set_a form_n of_o psalm_n we_o allow_v as_o necessary_a in_o the_o latter_a sense_n as_o necessary_a by_o consequence_n from_o divine_a institution_n for_o if_o sing_v of_o psalm_n be_v as_o it_o be_v of_o divine_a institution_n and_o if_o psalm_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o spiritual_a poetry_n and_o therefore_o to_o be_v put_v into_o verse_n if_o it_o be_v also_o of_o divine_a institution_n that_o all_o the_o people_n shall_v join_v as_o well_o in_o voice_n as_o in_o heart_n in_o sing_v of_o psalm_n and_o that_o in_o a_o language_n know_v and_o understand_v by_o themselves_o than_o it_o will_v be_v requisite_a and_o necessary_a by_o divine_a institution_n for_o he_o that_o institute_v the_o end_n institute_v the_o necessary_a mean_n that_o lead_v to_o the_o end_n that_o in_o our_o english_a church_n the_o psalm_n be_v translate_v into_o english_a verse_n or_o metre_n and_o receive_v of_o the_o church_n in_o a_o set_a form_n that_o so_o all_o the_o people_n may_v join_v with_o one_o voice_n and_o heart_n to_o praise_v the_o lord_n together_o in_o the_o same_o word_n but_o there_o be_v not_o the_o like_a necessity_n of_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n in_o prayer_n for_o in_o prayer_n as_o have_v be_v say_v there_o be_v no_o more_o require_v of_o the_o people_n then_o when_o they_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o minister_n to_o go_v along_o with_o he_o in_o heart_n and_o in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o prayer_n to_o answer_v with_o one_o accord_n in_o voice_n amen_n and_o so_o whatsoever_o be_v require_v of_o the_o people_n by_o divine_a institution_n for_o join_v in_o prayer_n be_v full_o attain_v without_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n in_o prayer_n which_o can_v be_v attain_v in_o sing_v without_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n in_o psalm_n disc_n it_o be_v say_v of_o prayer_n christ_n have_v give_v gift_n to_o his_o minister_n for_o preach_v and_o pray_v have_v he_o not_o for_o the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n also_o if_o it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o christ_n as_o some_o affirm_v that_o they_o shall_v use_v a_o form_n of_o prayer_n devise_v by_o other_o be_v it_o not_o a_o dishonour_n likewise_o if_o they_o shall_v use_v a_o form_n of_o sing_v devise_v by_o other_o answ_n it_o have_v be_v answer_v above_o that_o though_o god_n have_v give_v gift_n to_o his_o minister_n for_o preach_v and_o pray_v yet_o he_o have_v not_o give_v to_o many_o the_o gift_n of_o indite_v psalm_n also_o and_o yet_o neither_o be_v it_o any_o dishonour_n to_o christ_n nor_o sinful_a defect_n in_o his_o minister_n that_o he_o have_v not_o so_o furnish_v they_o see_v he_o himself_o have_v sufficient_o furnish_v they_o with_o all_o set_a form_n of_o psalm_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o his_o prophet_n divine_o inspire_v for_o the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n and_o it_o be_v no_o dishonour_n to_o christ_n or_o his_o minister_n that_o they_o shall_v take_v up_o form_n of_o word_n devise_v by_o he_o for_o his_o own_o worship_n disc_n if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o necessity_n of_o a_o set_a form_n of_o psalm_n as_o be_v pretend_v because_o some_o minister_n be_v not_o enable_v of_o themselves_o to_o furnish_v the_o necessity_n of_o the_o church_n it_o shall_v rather_o exempt_v they_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o sing_v psalm_n then_o give_v liberty_n to_o a_o devise_a form_n for_o it_o be_v a_o rule_n in_o divinity_n that_o against_o a_o general_a negative_a precept_n no_o particular_a affirmative_a can_v be_v lawful_a unless_o that_o particular_a be_v warrant_v in_o scripture_n etc._n etc._n but_o against_o this_o suppose_a general_n negative_a precept_n forbid_v all_o devise_a help_n and_o furtherance_n in_o god_n worship_n there_o be_v no_o particular_a warrant_n allow_v it_o in_o sing_v of_o psalm_n answ_n it_o be_v not_o a_o suppose_a but_o a_o real_a negative_a precept_n that_o general_o forbid_v all_o devise_a help_n and_o furtherance_n in_o god_n worship_n mean_v help_n and_o furtherance_n devise_v by_o man_n without_o warrant_n from_o the_o word_n for_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o proper_a true_a meaning_n of_o the_o second_o commandment_n as_o have_v be_v show_v above_o but_o we_o deny_v that_o set_v form_n of_o psalm_n record_v in_o scripture_n as_o help_n and_o furtherance_n devise_v by_o man_n but_o give_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o though_o the_o translation_n of_o the_o psalm_n both_o in_o english_a and_o in_o verse_n be_v by_o man_n yet_o not_o without_o warrant_n from_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o have_v command_v that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v dwell_v in_o we_o plenteous_o teach_v and_o admonish_v one_o another_o in_o psalm_n and_o hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n coloss_n 3.16_o who_o have_v also_o command_v that_o we_o shall_v sing_v with_o understanding_n 1_o cor._n 14.15_o which_o the_o people_n can_v not_o do_v wisdom_n of_o god_n have_v provide_v as_o necessary_a help_n for_o the_o furtherance_n of_o sundry_a part_n of_o god_n worship_n the_o scripture_n can_v be_v translate_v into_o our_o mother_n tongue_n without_o the_o help_n of_o grammar_n nor_o the_o psalm_n into_o verse_n and_o metre_n without_o the_o help_n of_o poetry_n nor_o sing_v without_o the_o help_n of_o music_n natural_a music_n at_o the_o least_o and_o therefore_o these_o kind_n of_o help_n we_o make_v use_v of_o as_o not_o be_v mean_n of_o worship_n devise_v or_o suggest_v by_o the_o wit_n or_o will_n of_o man_n but_o as_o they_o be_v indeed_o prepare_v and_o ordain_v according_a to_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n by_o god_n and_o so_o not_o fall_v under_o the_o general_a negative_a precept_n which_o forbid_v all_o humane_a invention_n and_o injunction_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n disc_n now_o whether_o the_o pretend_a necessity_n of_o a_o set_a form_n shall_v exempt_v from_o the_o general_a negative_a precept_n forbid_v devise_v form_n or_o from_o the_o affirmative_a precept_n of_o sing_v psalm_n let_v they_o judge_v who_o put_v the_o exception_n answ_n we_o doubt_v not_o to_o judge_v it_o safe_a to_o obey_v the_o affirmative_a precept_n of_o sing_v psalm_n in_o a_o set_a form_n of_o word_n though_o translate_v into_o english_a and_o into_o verse_n by_o man_n because_o set_v psalm_n be_v ordain_v of_o god_n and_o their_o translation_n into_o english_a verse_n be_v necessary_o employ_v and_o warrant_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o yet_o nevertheless_o we_o do_v not_o pretend_v any_o necessity_n to_o exempt_v any_o such_o set_a form_n from_o the_o general_a negative_a precept_n which_o fall_v under_o the_o prohibition_n of_o it_o for_o these_o the_o negative_a precept_n do_v never_o intend_v to_o prohibit_v you_o need_v not_o therefore_o to_o wonder_v as_o you_o do_v in_o the_o follow_a word_n
