for_o he_o or_o lay_v down_o for_o he_o as_o he_o please_v if_o they_o threaten_v death_n that_o we_o be_v his_o either_o to_o live_v to_o he_o or_o to_o die_v for_o he_o which_o he_o please_v and_o that_o it_o be_v better_a for_o we_o to_o die_v for_o his_o truth_n in_o his_o service_n than_o to_o live_v to_o deny_v his_o truth_n to_o his_o dishonour_n and_o this_o be_v self-denial_n indeed_o to_o seek_v the_o honour_n of_o christ_n by_o the_o loss_n of_o all_o that_o may_v be_v dear_a unto_o we_o in_o this_o world_n many_o will_v be_v content_a to_o deny_v themselves_o in_o some_o thing_n here_o rather_o than_o open_o deny_v jesus_n christ_n they_o can_v be_v content_a to_o suffer_v a_o little_a for_o he_o as_o to_o suffer_v imprisonment_n awhile_o but_o not_o to_o suffer_v at_o a_o stake_n to_o run_v with_o the_o footman_n but_o not_o to_o contend_v with_o horse_n as_o be_v indeed_o notable_o observe_v 31._o mr._n baxt._n self-denial_n p._n 31._o a_o man_n may_v deny_v self_n for_o self_n in_o many_o particular_n and_o so_o may_v please_v self_n more_o than_o he_o deny_v it_o this_o be_v no_o true_a self-denial_n i_o will_v not_o be_v unfaithful_a to_o you_o and_o so_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o that_o you_o will_v not_o forsake_v all_o rather_o than_o christ_n forsake_v all_o i_o say_v for_o christ_n when_o you_o may_v be_v call_v to_o it_o if_o you_o be_v for_o keep_v back_o a_o part_n you_o do_v not_o yet_o deny_v yourselves_o yea_o you_o have_v deny_v christ_n already_o in_o your_o heart_n and_o therefore_o unless_o you_o be_v change_v have_v no_o ground_n to_o hope_v that_o christ_n will_v own_v you_o i_o know_v many_o will_v count_v this_o a_o hard_a say_n but_o how_o oft_o do_v jesus_n christ_n tell_v you_o as_o much_o that_o for_o christ_n that_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o forsake_v all_o or_o though_o we_o shall_v forsake_v all_o it_o will_v not_o prove_v we_o to_o be_v self-denying_a person_n if_o a_o man_n be_v willing_a to_o die_v in_o the_o maintenance_n or_o profession_n of_o the_o truth_n willing_a to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n in_o this_o cause_n to_o be_v enroll_v with_o the_o noble_a army_n of_o martyr_n to_o get_v a_o immortal_a name_n to_o have_v his_o memory_n honour_v when_o he_o be_v dead_a and_o go_v this_o be_v not_o true_a self-denial_n this_o will_v be_v die_v to_o one_o self_n and_o for_o one_o self_n not_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o for_o the_o lord_n thus_o you_o see_v how_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v learn_v to_o deny_v ourselves_o yet_o i_o must_v grant_v that_o self-denial_n be_v imperfect_a here_o as_o other_o grace_n and_o self_n be_v never_o full_o vanquish_v in_o this_o life_n it_o be_v oft_o make_v insurrection_n in_o the_o soul_n indeed_o it_o be_v a_o close_a enemy_n a_o enemy_n that_o lie_v very_o near_o we_o the_o holy_a man_n on_o earth_n be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o disturb_v and_o set_v upon_o with_o this_o enemy_n self_n but_o they_o be_v careful_a to_o watch_v against_o it_o they_o be_v fight_v it_o they_o oppose_v it_o wherever_o they_o meet_v with_o it_o and_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o look_v well_o to_o ourselves_o for_o we_o can_v have_v no_o further_o evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o grace_n in_o we_o than_o we_o have_v that_o we_o be_v sincere_o self-denying_a and_o have_v not_o only_o our_o judgement_n and_o conscience_n but_o also_o the_o prevail_a part_n of_o our_o will_n against_o base_a selfishness_n of_o sincerity_n and_o uprightness_n psal._n 37.37_o mark_v the_o perfect_a man_n and_o behold_v the_o upright_a for_o the_o end_n of_o that_o man_n be_v peace_n as_o the_o lord_n take_v pleasure_n in_o uprightness_n 1_o chron._n 29.17_o so_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o his_o
