argument_n whereby_o they_o plead_v to_o defend_v their_o practice_n in_o cast_v off_o
so_o engross_v the_o truth_n that_o other_o may_v not_o in_o some_o point_n be_v right_a than_o they_o or_o that_o they_o may_v not_o be_v guilty_a of_o run_v too_o far_o in_o any_o one_o point_n either_o by_o the_o power_n of_o prejudice_n or_o heat_n of_o opposition_n or_o some_o other_o disadvantage_n temptation_n or_o imperfection_n this_o be_v such_o arrogancy_n as_o modest_a christian_n shall_v not_o be_v guilty_a of_o much_o less_o shall_v they_o be_v unwilling_a to_o hear_v and_o try_v whether_o it_o be_v so_o or_o not_o undoubted_o there_o be_v many_o difference_n that_o seem_v up_o to_o the_o congregation_n of_o those_o few_o that_o say_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o church_n stand_v by_o we_o be_v more_o holy_a than_o you_o in_o a_o word_n and_o a_o plain_a word_n some_o respective_a difference_n be_v import_v in_o the_o term_n 2._o as_o god_n be_v judge_n of_o the_o world_n according_a to_o his_o law_n so_o he_o have_v a_o sentential_a remission_n of_o sin_n or_o justification_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o term_n remission_n of_o sin_n do_v more_o proper_o signify_v the_o legal_a or_o donative_n remission_n and_o less_o proper_o the_o judicial_a sentence_n it_o be_v in_o strict_a sense_n the_o prerogative_n of_o a_o ruler_n as_o he_o be_v above_o all_o law_n to_o pardon_v the_o fault_n against_o the_o law_n and_o not_o of_o a_o judge_n who_o as_o such_o must_v be_v regulate_v by_o law_n yet_o the_o word_n pardon_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o the_o sentence_n too_o but_o contrary_o justification_n signify_v very_o fit_o both_o act_n legal_a and_o judicial_a but_o more_o full_o and_o strict_o the_o sentence_n than_o the_o grant_n and_o therefore_o justificatio_fw-la juris_fw-la &_o justificatio_fw-la judicis_fw-la be_v a_o most_o necessary_a currant_n distinction_n but_o justificatio_fw-la judicis_fw-la be_v the_o more_o proper_a phrase_n but_o remissio_fw-la juris_fw-la et_fw-la judicis_fw-la so_o it_o belong_v to_o he_o actual_o to_o punish_v or_o to_o remit_v punishment_n and_o thus_o his_o pardon_n be_v not_o to_o punish_v yet_o not_o simple_o not_o to_o punish_v but_o not_o to_o punish_v one_o that_o deserve_v it_o this_o i_o call_v for_o distinction_n sake_n executive_a pardon_n now_o i_o conceive_v that_o the_o word_n justification_n have_v principal_a respect_n to_o the_o obligation_n and_o sentence_n and_o less_o to_o the_o punishment_n but_o the_o word_n remission_n more_o emphatical_o connote_v the_o punishment_n than_o the_o obligation_n dissolve_v and_o yet_o the_o obligation_n more_o than_o the_o sentence_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o this_o reverend_a author_n do_v sometime_o look_v only_o at_o the_o executive_a remission_n in_o his_o consectary_n sometime_o at_o the_o legal_a remission_n and_o sometime_o he_o join_v they_o together_o as_o one_o and_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o this_o last_o be_v the_o full_a end_n and_o perfection_n of_o both_o the_o former_a and_o the_o former_a be_v both_o but_o mean_n to_o this_o therefore_o do_v god_n give_v we_o pardon_v and_o judge_v we_o pardon_v that_o we_o may_v escape_v the_o penalty_n and_o live_v the_o reverend_a author_n call_v this_o the_o ultimate_a term_n and_o the_o dissolve_v of_o the_o obligation_n the_o near_a which_o may_v admit_v of_o a_o double_a sense_n either_o as_o pardon_n more_o plain_o and_o to_o see_v such_o clear_a reason_n for_o a_o necessity_n of_o our_o daily_a pray_v for_o pardon_n yea_o for_o pardon_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n that_o be_v before_o pardon_v and_o to_o see_v providential_a castigatory_a punishment_n so_o well_o reconcile_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o christ_n satisfaction_n for_o the_o same_o sin_n and_o to_o see_v such_o full_a evidence_n for_o a_o necessity_n of_o holy_a fear_n &_o work_v out_o our_o savaltion_n yet_o without_o ascribe_v any_o merit_n unto_o man_n to_o see_v the_o reason_n of_o the_o necessity_n that_o the_o promise_n of_o our_o continue_a and_o final_a justification_n shall_v be_v on_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o perseverance_n and_o so_o that_o continue_a and_o final_a justification_n be_v but_o conditional_a and_o this_o not_o only_o consistent_a with_o the_o certain_a perseverance_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o also_o the_o ordinate_a rational_a mean_n of_o their_o perseverance_n to_o see_v we_o expect_v salvation_n as_o merit_a wage_n for_o our_o work_n this_o be_v to_o work_v legal_o but_o to_o labour_v by_o his_o strength_n to_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o believe_v repent_v to_o return_v unto_o and_o to_o keep_v with_o god_n in_o the_o duty_n of_o new_a obedience_n that_o so_o we_o may_v live_v and_o to_o expect_v from_o god_n free_a grace_n and_o mercy_n that_o in_o so_o do_v we_o shall_v live_v this_o be_v to_o work_v as_o a_o christian_a and_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n object_n but_o be_v it_o not_o the_o to_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o do_v any_o good_a duty_n for_o salvation_n as_o this_o latter_a be_v a_o thing_n unlawful_a so_o the_o former_a be_v a_o thing_n i_o be_o well_o assure_v not_o only_o lawful_a but_o also_o expedient_a and_o necessary_a in_o order_n therefore_o thereunto_o be_v it_o know_v 1._o in_o general_n that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o trust_v unto_o or_o rest_n upon_o our_o own_o good_a work_n duty_n or_o grace_n for_o salvation_n in_o any_o such_o sort_n as_o christ_n alone_o and_o his_o righteousness_n be_v to_o be_v trust_v unto_o or_o rest_v upon_o 2._o more_o particular_o be_v it_o know_v 1._o that_o we_o may_v not_o trust_v unto_o or_o rest_n in_o they_o as_o our_o legal_a righteousness_n i._n e._n such_o as_o for_o which_o the_o law_n of_o work_n will_v pronounce_v we_o righteous_a or_o as_o any_o part_n of_o our_o legal_a righteousness_n in_o conjunction_n with_o christ_n 2._o consequent_o hereupon_o we_o may_v not_o rest_v in_o they_o as_o thing_n that_o be_v absolute_o perfect_a and_o exact_o commensurate_a or_o answerable_a to_o the_o rigour_n of_o the_o law_n 3._o not_o as_o thing_n by_o which_o god_n justice_n be_v satisfy_v his_o wrath_n pacify_v or_o by_o which_o we_o make_v he_o a_o amends_o for_o breach_n of_o the_o first_o covenant_n 4._o consequent_o hereupon_o not_o as_o thing_n whereby_o in_o any_o strict_a or_o proper_a sense_n we_o do_v merit_v salvation_n we_o have_v indeed_o no_o work_n formal_o we_o which_o do_v make_v the_o reward_n to_o be_v of_o debt_n and_o not_o of_o grace_n in_o these_o respect_v we_o be_v to_o disclaim_v all_o our_o own_o work_n duty_n grace_n holiness_n and_o to_o trust_v unto_o or_o rest_n upon_o christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n whole_o and_o sole_o 2_o but_o in_o the_o second_o place_n be_v it_o know_v 1_o in_o general_n that_o because_o christ_n alone_o be_v to_o be_v rest_v upon_o for_o salvation_n in_o the_o foresay_a respect_n we_o have_v
