reason_n that_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v very_o well_o support_v with_o scripture_n before_o they_o be_v receive_v for_o article_n of_o faith_n or_o else_o our_o faith_n will_v be_v as_o very_a a_o concern_v transubstantiation_n but_o then_o i_o hope_v they_o will_v prove_v that_o it_o do_v so_o not_o expect_v that_o we_o shall_v take_v it_o for_o grant_v because_o they_o say_v it_o now_o not_o to_o insist_v upon_o those_o argument_n whereby_o our_o divine_n have_v so_o demonstrative_o prove_v that_o transubstantiation_n as_o explain_v by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n can_v be_v the_o sense_n evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n against_o the_o authority_n of_o scripture_n for_o i_o will_v never_o suppose_v that_o they_o can_v contradict_v each_o other_o and_o if_o there_o shall_v appear_v some_o contradiction_n between_o they_o i_o will_v be_v content_v at_o present_a without_o dispute_v that_o point_n to_o give_v it_o on_o the_o side_n of_o scripture_n but_o i_o will_v oppose_v the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n against_o any_o private_a man_n or_o any_o church_n exposition_n of_o scripture_n and_o if_o that_o exposition_n they_o give_v of_o any_o text_n of_o scripture_n as_o suppose_v this_o be_v my_o body_n contradict_v the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n i_o may_v modest_o require_v as_o plain_a proof_n that_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o text_n as_o i_o have_v that_o such_o a_o meaning_n be_v contrary_a to_o all_o sense_n and_o reason_n for_o though_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v not_o the_o rule_n and_o measure_n of_o faith_n yet_o we_o must_v use_v our_o sense_n and_o reason_n in_o expound_v scripture_n or_o we_o may_v quick_o make_v a_o very_a absurd_a and_o senseless_a religion_n now_o this_o show_v we_o what_o kind_n of_o proof_n we_o must_v require_v that_o transubstantiation_n be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n viz._n as_o certain_a proof_n as_o we_o have_v that_o transubstantiation_n be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n and_o therefore_o 1._o we_o must_v demand_v a_o self-evident_a proof_n of_o this_o because_o it_o be_v self-evident_a that_o transubstantiation_n contradict_v sense_n and_o reason_n every_o man_n who_o know_v what_o the_o word_n mean_n which_o i_o believe_v man_n may_v do_v without_o be_v great_a philosopher_n and_o will_v consult_v his_o own_o sense_n and_o reason_n will_v need_v no_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o transubstantiation_n contradict_v both_o now_o such_o a_o scripture-proof_n i_o will_v see_v for_o transubstantiation_n so_o plain_a and_o express_v and_o self-evident_a that_o no_o man_n who_o understand_v the_o word_n can_v doubt_v whether_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o they_o i_o mean_v a_o reasonable_a not_o a_o obstinate_a wilful_a and_o sceptical_a doubt_v now_o i_o believe_v that_o our_o adversary_n themselves_o will_v not_o say_v that_o this_o be_v my_o body_n be_v such_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n of_o transubstantiation_n i_o be_o sure_a some_o of_o the_o wise_a man_n among_o they_o have_v not_o think_v it_o so_o and_o the_o fierce_a dispute_n for_o so_o many_o age_n about_o the_o interpretation_n of_o those_o word_n prove_v that_o it_o be_v not_o so_o for_o man_n do_v not_o use_v to_o dispute_v what_o be_v self-evident_a and_o prove_v itself_o without_o any_o other_o argument_n now_o it_o be_v very_o unreasonable_a to_o require_v any_o man_n to_o believe_v transubstantiation_n against_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n that_o it_o be_v contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n without_o give_v he_o a_o self-evident_a proof_n that_o it_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o scripture_n which_o be_v to_o require_v a_o man_n to_o believe_v against_o the_o best_a reason_n and_o evidence_n 2._o we_o must_v demand_v such_o a_o scripture-proof_n of_o transubstantiation_n as_o can_v possible_o signify_v any_o thing_n else_o or_o else_o it_o will_v not_o answer_v that_o evidence_n which_o we_o have_v against_o transubstantiation_n for_o sense_n and_o reason_n pronounce_v transubstantiation_n to_o be_v natural_o impossible_a and_o therefore_o unless_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a to_o put_v any_o other_o sense_n upon_o scripture_n than_o what_o signify_v transubstantiation_n as_o it_o be_v to_o reconcile_v transubstantiation_n to_o sense_n and_o reason_n there_o be_v not_o such_o good_a evidence_n for_o transubstantiation_n as_o against_o it_o be_v the_o scripture-proof_n for_o transubstantiation_n so_o plain_a and_o evident_a that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o put_v any_o other_o sense_n on_o the_o word_n than_o i_o will_v grant_v that_o it_o be_v as_o impossible_a for_o those_o who_o believe_v the_o scripture_n to_o disbelieve_v transubstantiation_n as_o it_o be_v for_o those_o who_o trust_v to_o their_o own_o sense_n and_o reason_n to_o believe_v it_o here_o the_o difficulty_n will_v be_v equal_a on_o both_o side_n and_o then_o i_o shall_v prefer_v a_o divine_a revelation_n if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o prove_v such_o a_o revelation_n to_o be_v divine_a before_o natural_a sense_n and_o reason_n but_o i_o presume_v no_o man_n will_v say_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o put_v another_o and_o that_o a_o very_a reasonable_a interpretation_n upon_o those_o word_n this_o be_v my_o body_n without_o expound_v they_o to_o the_o sense_n of_o transubstantiation_n our_o roman_a adversary_n do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o these_o word_n be_v capable_a of_o a_o figurative_a as_o well_o as_o of_o a_o literal_a sense_n as_o when_o the_o church_n be_v call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n flesh_n of_o his_o flesh_n and_o bone_n of_o his_o bone_n it_o be_v not_o mean_v of_o his_o natural_a but_o his_o mystical_a body_n and_o thus_o when_o the_o bread_n be_v call_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n it_o may_v not_o signify_v his_o natural_a but_o sacramental_a body_n or_o his_o body_n to_o all_o the_o end_n and_o purpose_n of_o a_o sacrament_n now_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o good_a sense_n to_o be_v make_v of_o these_o word_n beside_o transubstantiation_n there_o can_v be_v such_o a_o necessity_n to_o expound_v they_o of_o transubstantiation_n as_o there_o be_v not_o to_o expound_v they_o of_o it_o for_o i_o do_v not_o reject_v scripture_n if_o i_o deny_v transubstantiation_n when_o the_o word_n of_o scripture_n do_v not_o necessary_o prove_v it_o but_o i_o renounce_v sense_n and_o reason_n if_o i_o believe_v it_o now_o though_o i_o be_v bind_v to_o renounce_v my_o sense_n and_o reason_n when_o they_o contradict_v scripture_n yet_o sure_o i_o be_o not_o bind_v to_o deny_v my_o sense_n and_o reason_n when_o they_o do_v not_o contradict_v scripture_n and_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v never_o contrary_a to_o scripture_n nor_o scripture_n to_o they_o when_o the_o word_n of_o scripture_n be_v capable_a of_o such_o a_o interpretation_n as_o be_v reconcilable_a both_o to_o sense_n and_o reason_n in_o such_o a_o case_n to_o expound_v scripture_n contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v both_o to_o pervert_v the_o scripture_n and_o to_o contradict_v reason_n without_o any_o necessity_n a_o unlearned_a man_n need_v not_o enter_v into_o a_o large_a dispute_n about_o transubstantiation_n let_v he_o but_o require_v his_o adversary_n to_o give_v he_o as_o plain_a evidence_n that_o transubstantiation_n impossible_a more_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n than_o the_o doctrine_n of_o transubstantiation_n be_v and_o than_o it_o be_v no_o argument_n against_o any_o doctrine_n or_o any_o exposition_n of_o scripture_n that_o it_o be_v absurd_a and_o impossible_a contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n for_o so_o transubstantiation_n be_v and_o if_o we_o may_v believe_v one_o absurd_a doctrine_n we_o may_v believe_v five_o hundred_o how_o absurd_a soever_o they_o be_v and_o then_o what_o defence_n have_v any_o man_n against_o the_o most_o monstrous_a corruption_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n be_v this_o the_o way_n to_o improve_v knowledge_n to_o destroy_v all_o the_o certain_a mark_n and_o character_n of_o truth_n and_o error_n and_o to_o leave_v no_o rule_n to_o reason_n of_o what_o he_o affirm_v nay_o though_o he_o teach_v such_o doctrine_n as_o appear_v to_o we_o most_o express_o contrary_a to_o sense_n and_o reason_n and_o scripture_n be_v no_o gospel-doctrine_n because_o it_o be_v not_o the_o way_n to_o make_v man_n wise_a and_o understand_a christian_n which_o be_v the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o to_o suspend_v the_o law_n must_v take_v place_n against_o our_o uncertain_a reason_n for_o we_o may_v reasonable_o conclude_v that_o god_n understand_v the_o reason_n and_o nature_n of_o thing_n better_a than_o we_o do_v instead_o of_o the_o natural_a notion_n and_o idea_n of_o our_o mind_n but_o i_o can_v never_o know_v that_o by_o revelation_n which_o contradict_v my_o natural_a knowledge_n which_o will_v be_v not_o only_o to_o know_v that_o which_o i_o have_v no_o natural_a knowledge_n of_o which_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o faith_n but_o to_o know_v that_o by_o revelation_n which_o by_o reason_n and_o nature_n i_o know_v can_v be_v which_o be_v to_o know_v that_o which_o i_o know_v can_v be_v know_v because_o i_o know_v it_o can_v be_v so_o that_o transubstantiation_n which_o contradict_v all_o the_o evidence_n of_o sense_n and_o reason_n be_v not_o the_o object_n of_o any_o humane_a knowledge_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v a_o gospel-revelation_n which_o be_v to_o improve_v and_o perfect_v not_o that_o my_o faculty_n be_v true_a and_o can_v i_o be_v persuade_v that_o my_o faculty_n be_v not_o true_a but_o deceive_v i_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o i_o judge_v most_o certain_a and_o
bondage_n but_o be_v this_o all_o that_o these_o word_n thou_o shall_v have_v no_o other_o god_n before_o i_o signify_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n indeed_o be_v suppose_v in_o they_o but_o the_o express_a word_n of_o the_o law_n be_v not_o for_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o lord_n jehovah_n but_o against_o the_o worship_n of_o any_o other_o god_n before_o he_o or_o beside_o he_o but_o according_a to_o our_o new_a expositor_n this_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o law_n though_o according_a to_o the_o express_a word_n it_o be_v the_o principal_a if_o not_o the_o whole_a meaning_n of_o it_o if_o this_o argument_n be_v good_a viz._n that_o idolatry_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o worship_n of_o other_o being_n beside_o the_o lord_n jehovah_n as_o supreme_a god_n than_o other_o god_n in_o this_o commandment_n must_v signify_v other_o supreme_a god_n and_o then_o the_o commandment_n run_v thus_o thou_o shall_v have_v no_o other_o supreme_a god_n before_o i_o now_o this_o be_v a_o very_a absurd_a sense_n because_o it_o suppose_v that_o man_n may_v believe_v and_o worship_n more_o supreme_a god_n than_o one_o for_o if_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o supreme_a god_n and_o by_o god_n in_o the_o commandment_n be_v mean_v supreme_a god_n than_o it_o be_v absurd_a to_o forbid_v any_o man_n to_o have_v other_o supreme_a god_n because_o no_o man_n can_v acknowledge_v two_o supremes_n it_o shall_v have_v be_v thou_o shall_v not_o have_v any_o other_o god_n beside_o i_o not_o god_n for_o though_o it_o have_v be_v possible_a for_o they_o to_o have_v acknowledge_v some_o other_o god_n to_o be_v supreme_a and_o reject_v the_o lord_n jehovah_n from_o be_v supreme_a yet_o they_o can_v not_o have_v other_o supreme_a gods._n but_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o god_n here_o forbid_v the_o worship_n of_o a_o plurality_n of_o god_n of_o other_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o can_v not_o all_o be_v supreme_a gods._n but_o suppose_v it_o have_v be_v any_o other_o god_n in_o the_o single_a number_n yet_o to_o understand_v this_o of_o a_o supreme_a god_n be_v very_o absurd_a because_o there_o be_v no_o other_o supreme_a god_n but_o the_o lord_n jehovah_n and_o those_o who_o worship_v but_o one_o supreme_a god_n worship_v he_o and_o none_o else_o for_o a_o supreme_a god_n be_v not_o to_o be_v point_v at_o be_v not_o to_o be_v distinguish_v by_o his_o person_n or_o feature_n as_o one_o man_n be_v distinguish_v from_o another_o indeed_o a_o prince_n may_v proper_o say_v to_o his_o subject_n you_o shall_v own_v none_o but_o i_o for_o your_o king_n because_o they_o know_v his_o person_n and_o can_v distinguish_v he_o from_o all_o other_o man_n but_o the_o jew_n never_o see_v god_n nor_o any_o likeness_n or_o similitude_n of_o he_o they_o be_v not_o acquaint_v great_a god_n because_o it_o be_v the_o great_a god_n they_o have_v their_o king_n and_o prince_n of_o god_n as_o mr._n selden_n tell_v we_o they_o call_v the_o sun_n as_o be_v the_o chief_a planet_n who_o direct_v and_o govern_v the_o influence_n of_o the_o rest_n not_o as_o the_o maker_n of_o the_o world_n as_o this_o author_n assert_n but_o those_o who_o direct_v their_o worship_n to_o a_o the_o true_a notion_n of_o idolatry_n in_o the_o first_o commandment_n be_v to_o worship_v some_o inferior_a being_n together_o with_o the_o supreme_a god_n it_o be_v a_o grosser_n sort_n of_o idolatry_n when_o man_n whole_o neglect_v the_o worship_n of_o the_o supreme_a god_n and_o worship_v some_o creature_n for_o their_o great_a and_o chief_a god_n and_o it_o be_v worse_a still_o when_o man_n worship_v bad_a spirit_n than_o when_o they_o worship_v good_a spirit_n together_o with_o the_o supreme_a god_n but_o it_o be_v evident_a this_o law_n condemn_v the_o worship_n of_o any_o inferior_a being_n though_o we_o do_v also_o worship_v the_o supreme_a god._n i_o shall_v give_v but_o one_o instance_n more_o of_o this_o nature_n and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o commandment_n
