only_o of_o charity_n but_o of_o opinion_n and_o judgement_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o fundamental_o in_o which_o as_o i_o say_v all_o the_o factious_a corinthian_n or_o most_o of_o they_o accord_v but_o other_o beneficial_a truth_n which_o union_n how_o can_v so_o many_o judgement_n independent_a of_o one_o another_o attain_v but_o by_o all_o of_o they_o retain_v the_o same_o doctrine_n of_o their_o pastor_n or_o pastor_n 4_o if_o these_o point_n wherein_o the_o reform_v recede_v from_o the_o authority_n of_o superior_a council_n be_v not_o very_o necessary_a though_o not_o fundamental_a how_o can_v a_o separation_n for_o they_o be_v justify_v but_o if_o necessary_a why_o shall_v we_o say_v that_o god_n require_v not_o a_o unity_n of_o faith_n in_o they_o 5_o again_o as_o faith_n and_o charity_n secure_v not_o our_o salvation_n if_o we_o be_v guilty_a of_o some_o other_o vice_n adultery_n &c_n &c_n so_o they_o do_v not_o secure_v it_o if_o there_o be_v any_o denial_n of_o obedience_n where_o it_o be_v due_a especial_o to_o the_o church_n disobedience_n towards_o who_o be_v in_o a_o more_o special_a manner_n disobedience_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o god_n himself_o and_o why_o may_v not_o this_o then_o endanger_v we_o if_o god_n have_v provide_v teacher_n to_o keep_v we_o in_o the_o same_o judgement_n and_o we_o to_o the_o great_a hurt_n both_o of_o the_o church_n and_o of_o ourselves_o too_o by_o these_o division_n will_v every_o one_o follow_v his_o own_o judgement_n especial_o since_o
all_o her_o tradition_n or_o doctrine_n from_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o scripture_n our_o saviour_n promise_n etc._n etc._n deliver_v there_o and_o then_o to_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v god_n word_n or_o infallible_a because_o this_o be_v one_o of_o her_o tradition_n or_o doctrine_n be_v grant_v even_o by_o some_o of_o the_o roman_a writer_n to_o be_v a_o circle_n see_v dr._n do_v affirm_v that_o the_o scripture_n be_v prove_v to_o be_v god_n word_n from_o the_o church_n testimony_n or_o from_o tradition_n only_o where_o both_o these_o scripture_n and_o church-infallibility_a be_v deny_v neither_o can_v be_v prove_v by_o the_o other_o till_o one_o be_v either_o suppose_v as_o true_a or_o prove_v by_o some_o other_o medium_n which_o medium_n be_v receive_v to_o be_v tradition_n and_o if_o so_o than_o i_o say_v there_o can_v be_v no_o more_o certainty_n that_o the_o church_n be_v infallible_a than_o that_o certainty_n which_o lie_v in_o universal_a tradition_n 2._o and_o second_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v for_o scripture_n which_o be_v suppose_v to_o be_v infallible_a because_o god_n word_n yet_o if_o they_o be_v 24._o prove_v only_o by_o the_o same_o tradition_n to_o be_v god_n word_n all_o the_o certainty_n that_o i_o have_v of_o their_o infallibility_n be_v also_o from_o universal_a tradition_n for_o the_o conclusion_n can_v have_v no_o more_o evidence_n than_o the_o premise_n or_o proof_n have_v again_o suppose_v i_o be_v without_o tradition_n infallible_o certain_a that_o such_o book_n be_v god_n word_n yet_o can_v i_o not_o for_o all_o this_o quit_v the_o dependence_n upon_o tradition_n in_o some_o point_n at_o least_o of_o my_o faith_n for_o my_o faith_n be_v ground_v not_o on_o the_o bare_a word_n but_o sense_n of_o those_o book_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o same_o word_n be_v divers_a especial_o since_o the_o sense_n of_o no_o one_o text_n must_v oppose_v the_o sense_n of_o any_o other_o and_o hence_o scripture_n most_o clear_a in_o their_o expression_n by_o reason_n of_o other_o scripture_n as_o seem_o clear_a that_o express_v the_o contrary_a notwithstanding_o this_o clearness_n become_v very_o ambiguous_a and_o that_o in_o some_o necessary_a point_n of_o faith_n as_o appear_v in_o those_o many_o controversy_n concern_v their_o sense_n some_o of_o which_o contest_v doubtless_o be_v in_o very_o necessary_a point_n and_o matter_n of_o faith_n to_o know_v therefore_o among_o these_o which_o be_v the_o true_a sense_n as_o suppose_v in_o the_o controversy_n about_o the_o sacred_a trinity_n grace_n and_o free_a will_n justification_n etc._n etc._n upon_o which_o first_o know_v i_o must_v ground_v my_o faith_n i_o be_o no_o way_n help_v by_o know_v that_o the_o writing_n be_v god_n word_n here_o therefore_o though_o the_o scripture_n for_o the_o word_n shall_v not_o yet_o my_o faith_n for_o their_o sense_n will_v have_v a_o dependence_n upon_o and_o repair_v unto_o universal_a tradition_n and_o wherever_o the_o sense_n be_v doubtful_a to_o i_o as_o the_o scripture_n may_v be_v doubtful_a to_o one_o where_o perspicuous_a to_o another_o the_o chief_a certainty_n i_o can_v have_v for_o that_o sense_n which_o my_o faith_n ought_v to_o embrace_v will_v be_v from_o the_o universal_a church-tradition_n now_o concern_v this_o universal_a tradition_n therefore_o on_o which_o tradition_n as_o the_o final_a assurer_n of_o the_o scripture_n or_o of_o the_o church_n infallibility_n the_o act_n of_o faith_n must_v rest_v let_v it_o be_v grant_v 1._o first_o without_o dispute_v whether_o it_o be_v absolute_o infallible_a because_o it_o be_v needle_n to_o the_o state_v of_o our_o business_n that_o there_o be_v in_o it_o certainty_n upon_o or_o assurance_n sufficient_a to_o ground_v a_o firm_a faith_n upon_o for_o though_o it_o be_v willing_o assent_v to_o that_o tradition_n be_v in_o its_o nature_n a_o relation_n of_o a_o thing_n give_v not_o nor_o can_v give_v we_o such_o a_o assurance_n as_o that_o we_o know_v the_o contrary_a thereof_o to_o be_v absolute_o impossible_a for_o it_o be_v not_o absolute_o impossible_a for_o all_o man_n in_o the_o world_n from_o the_o begin_n thereof_o till_o this_o time_n to_o have_v lie_v in_o every_o thing_n they_o have_v say_v but_o yet_o he_o be_v no_o ordinary_a madman_n that_o upon_o this_o nonimpossibility_n will_v believe_v no_o relation_n at_o all_o only_o because_o it_o be_v not_o absolute_o impossible_a that_o they_o may_v err_v and_o himself_o hit_v the_o right_n yet_o 1._o we_o book_n thereof_o depend_v on_o the_o certainty_n of_o tradition_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v impious_a to_o affirm_v that_o we_o have_v not_o a_o sufficient_o sure_a ground_n of_o that_o knowledge_n of_o good_a and_o evil_n upon_o which_o our_o eternal_a happi_n nes_z be_v to_o be_v acquire_v or_o misery_n sustain_v or_o that_o god_n have_v not_o leave_v a_o undoubtable_a evidence_n of_o those_o truth_n whereby_o we_o be_v to_o direct_v our_o life_n to_o that_o end_n for_o which_o he_o have_v create_v we_o but_o this_o can_v be_v assign_v no_o other_o at_o least_o to_o most_o man_n than_o tradition_n therefore_o it_o be_v the_o interest_n of_o all_o christian_n as_o well_o those_o who_o submit_v themselves_o only_o to_o the_o scripture_n as_o those_o who_o submit_v also_o to_o the_o particular_n as_o whether_o such_o or_o such_o a_o book_n of_o scripture_n be_v god_n word_n or_o be_v write_v by_o a_o heavenly-inspired_n author_n whether_o such_o a_o particular_a point_n of_o faith_n be_v to_o be_v state_v thus_o or_o so_o whether_o such_o be_v certain_o the_o meaning_n of_o some_o particular_a place_n of_o scripture_n here_o i_o say_v where_o there_o be_v contradiction_n and_o doubt_n between_o party_n few_o there_o be_v who_o will_v offer_v to_o plead_v such_o assurance_n from_o the_o spirit_n as_o that_o they_o can_v be_v mistake_v but_o labour_v to_o inform_v themselves_o as_o well_o as_o other_o the_o best_a they_o can_v from_o other_o reason_n and_o indeed_o do_v the_o spirit_n thus_o always_o bear_v witness_n to_o itself_o have_v we_o any_o such_o internal_a assurance_n ordinary_o for_o extraordinary_a assurance_n of_o it_o happen_v to_o some_o great_a saint_n of_o god_n in_o very_a many_o thing_n i_o deny_v not_o i_o mean_v not_o of_o the_o be_v lay_v for_o a_o ground_n that_o all_o true_a faith_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n yet_o we_o must_v by_o scripture_n or_o in_o thing_n doubtful_a by_o the_o church_n traditionary_a
