we_o be_v not_o that_o which_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v in_o christianity_n for_o if_o we_o we_o we_o shall_v find_v this_o disposition_n work_v in_o we_o to_o abound_v more_o and_o more_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n speak_v to_o the_o thessalonian_o 1_o thes_n 4.1_o we_o shall_v still_o find_v ourselves_o get_v up_o in_o spiritual_a strength_n look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n which_o be_v in_o part_n cure_v and_o recover_v out_o of_o some_o bodily_a distemper_n by_o how_o much_o the_o disease_n weaken_v the_o man_n strenthen_v as_o that_o lose_v of_o its_o power_n so_o he_o gain_v and_o get_v more_o in_o he_o even_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o that_o person_n which_o be_v bring_v out_o of_o his_o natural_a condition_n when_o the_o sinful_a corruption_n of_o nature_n be_v heal_v in_o he_o look_v how_o that_o do_v any_o thing_n decay_n so_o do_v grace_n flourish_v in_o he_o and_o increase_n as_o it_o be_v in_o those_o two_o opposite_n for_o the_o kingdom_n saul_n and_o david_n david_n wax_v strong_a and_o strong_a and_o the_o house_n of_o saul_n wax_v weak_a 2_o sam._n 3.1_o even_o so_o be_v it_o likewise_o here_o as_o grace_n weaken_v so_o corruption_n do_v more_o and_o more_o increase_n and_o as_o grace_n increase_v so_o do_v corruption_n loose_a of_o its_o strength_n these_o two_o they_o be_v like_o a_o pair_n of_o balance_n when_o the_o one_o go_v up_o the_o other_o be_v sure_a to_o go_v down_o and_o so_o contrary_o that_o heart_n which_o have_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n true_o and_o indeed_o wrought_v in_o it_o it_o will_v be_v desirous_a and_o endeavour_v after_o improvement_n and_o settlement_n of_o itself_o let_v none_o therefore_o plead_v weakness_n and_o justify_v and_o allow_v themselves_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o that_o be_v for_o it_o be_v not_o suitable_a to_o a_o christian_a temper_n the_o best_a christian_n that_o be_v they_o may_v have_v weakness_n in_o they_o but_o they_o do_v not_o content_v themselves_o with_o those_o weakness_n they_o have_v so_o much_o strength_n in_o they_o as_o to_o be_v sensible_a and_o apprehensive_a of_o their_o weakness_n and_o so_o much_o grace_n in_o they_o as_o to_o labour_n as_o soon_o as_o may_v be_v to_o come_v out_o of_o it_o and_o to_o gather_v strength_n and_o where_o we_o find_v it_o otherwise_o with_o ourselves_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o bewail_v ourselves_o and_o to_o be_v true_o humble_v for_o it_o as_o for_o those_o which_o have_v no_o strength_n at_o all_o they_o do_v not_o care_n for_o the_o renew_n of_o strength_n nay_o indeed_o they_o can_v they_o be_v uncapable_a of_o it_o the_o renew_n of_o strength_n do_v suppose_v the_o have_v of_o some_o strength_n already_o to_o be_v renew_v carnal_a and_o natural_a man_n which_o have_v no_o work_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n it_o be_v not_o weakness_n but_o wickedness_n and_o so_o to_o be_v account_v but_o where_o there_o be_v weakness_n there_o be_v in_o part_n some_o strength_n which_o be_v mingle_v with_o it_o and_o where_o there_o be_v this_o strength_n there_o be_v a_o endeavour_n to_o work_v out_o that_o weakness_n and_o to_o recover_v after_o some_o former_a abating_n and_o diminishing_n of_o grace_n in_o itself_o that_o be_v the_o second_o particular_a viz._n a_o christian_n disposition_n join_v with_o his_o duty_n they_o that_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n will_v renew_v their_o strength_n that_o be_v their_o inclination_n the_o three_o be_v their_o privilege_n what_o they_o may_v do_v or_o do_v indeed_o actual_o befall_v they_o they_o shall_v renew_v their_o strength_n that_o be_v this_o happiness_n belong_v unto_o they_o this_o be_v their_o state_n and_o condition_n and_o this_o indeed_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o proper_a sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o text_n to_o express_v thus_o much_o to_o we_o wherein_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n show_v we_o the_o difference_n between_o these_o and_o other_o in_o a_o way_n of_o opposition_n the_o youth_n shall_v faint_v christian_n as_o to_o spiritual_a strength_n first_o they_o have_v a_o change_n in_o quality_n another_o sort_n and_o kind_n of_o strength_n then_o what_o they_o have_v before_o conversion_n and_o second_o a_o change_n in_o quantity_n more_o strength_n then_o at_o their_o first_o conversion_n first_o i_o say_v there_o be_v a_o change_n in_o quality_n they_o that_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n shall_v renew_v their_o strength_n that_o be_v they_o shall_v have_v a_o new_a kind_n of_o strength_n bestow_v upon_o they_o over_o what_o they_o have_v before_o conversion_n as_o caleb_n have_v another_o spirit_n and_o saul_n another_o heart_n for_o we_o must_v know_v that_o even_o before_o conversion_n in_o natural_a and_o unregenerate_a person_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o strength_n which_o do_v appear_v in_o they_o and_o that_o also_o in_o reference_n to_o religion_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o strength_n as_o be_v here_o mean_v in_o this_o present_a text_n nor_o yet_o such_o as_o any_o be_v to_o satisfy_v and_o to_o rest_v themselves_o content_v withal_o to_o explain_v it_o a_o little_a unto_o you_o you_o may_v take_v it_o in_o these_o particular_n first_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o temper_n and_o natural_a constitution_n second_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o custom_n and_o religious_a education_n three_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o civility_n and_o moral_a principle_n each_o of_o these_o kind_n of_o strength_n there_o be_v and_o that_o also_o before_o conversion_n first_o i_o say_v there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o temper_n and_o natural_a constitution_n this_o be_v such_o as_o may_v go_v very_o far_o and_o a_o man_n may_v be_v able_a both_o to_o do_v and_o suffer_v very_o much_o by_o it_o this_o be_v that_o which_o do_v for_o the_o most_o part_n extend_v itself_o to_o the_o outside_n and_o form_n of_o religion_n and_o in_o those_o performance_n which_o belong_v to_o that_o man_n by_o a_o natural_a strength_n may_v be_v very_o much_o in_o they_o whether_o a_o strength_n of_o bodily_a frame_n or_o a_o strength_n of_o natural_a part_n but_o it_o be_v not_o this_o which_o be_v sufficient_a and_o yet_o it_o be_v that_o which_o many_o rest_n themselves_o in_o and_o be_v content_v withal_o the_o strength_n of_o wit_n and_o reason_n and_o understanding_n and_o memory_n and_o the_o like_a while_o their_o heart_n and_o will_n and_o affection_n have_v no_o save_a work_n at_o all_o upon_o they_o second_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o custom_n and_o religious_a education_n this_o it_o will_v go_v very_o far_o likewise_o many_o which_o have_v be_v pious_o educate_v and_o bring_v up_o and_o accustom_v to_o such_o and_o such_o performance_n they_o through_o use_n and_o exercise_n contract_n some_o kind_n of_o strength_n to_o themselves_o for_o the_o do_v of_o they_o and_o become_v strong_a in_o the_o outward_a bulk_n of_o religion_n this_o be_v such_o a_o strength_n as_o be_v in_o joash_n while_o his_o uncle_n jebojada_n live_v he_o do_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o right_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o the_o lord_n though_o afterward_o he_o depart_v from_o it_o and_o so_o it_o be_v also_o with_o many_o other_o beside_o they_o have_v nothing_o which_o do_v so_o much_o act_v they_o and_o put_v they_o forward_o to_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v good_a but_o as_o it_o be_v that_o which_o they_o have_v be_v always_o use_v and_o accustom_a unto_o three_o there_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o

wicked_a man_n first_o the_o darkness_n of_o condition_n answerable_a to_o the_o darkness_n of_o sin_n wicked_a man_n they_o abhor_v the_o light_n because_o their_o deed_n be_v evil_a they_o delight_v in_o work_n of_o darkness_n and_o now_o that_o light_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n yet_o they_o love_v darkness_n rather_o than_o light_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o gospel_n joh._n 3.19_o and_o guilty_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o youth_n in_o the_o time_n of_o age_n so_o there_o be_v other_o which_z be_v guilty_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o age_n in_o the_o time_n of_o youth_n malitia_fw-la supplet_fw-la aetatem_fw-la their_o wickedness_n it_o make_v up_o their_o year_n when_o they_o be_v defective_n now_o these_o also_o be_v as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o the_o sin_n of_o youth_n what_o ever_o sin_v man_n commit_v in_o the_o time_n of_o their_o youth_n they_o be_v to_o they_o youthful_a sin_n by_o way_n of_o denomination_n and_o so_o much_o brief_o of_o the_o first_o particular_a considerable_a in_o this_o first_o general_n viz._n the_o sin_n he_o sin_v of_o his_o youth_n the_o second_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o his_o sin_n which_o be_v express_v and_o propound_v in_o those_o word_n where_o it_o be_v say_v that_o his_o bone_n be_v full_a of_o they_o thus_o although_o it_o may_v be_v very_o well_o apply_v as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o gild_n as_o we_o shall_v hear_v more_o anon_o forasmuch_o as_o sin_n do_v as_o it_o be_v incorporate_v itself_o into_o wicked_a man_n and_o be_v as_o a_o part_n of_o their_o substance_n yet_o as_o i_o conceive_v in_o this_o place_n of_o this_o book_n his_o bone_n be_v full_a of_o it_o this_o word_n bone_n it_o may_v be_v take_v here_o in_o this_o text_n two_o manner_n of_o way_n either_o in_o a_o corporal_a sense_n or_o in_o a_o spiritual_a either_o proper_a in_o a_o literal_a or_o in_o a_o mystical_a if_o we_o take_v it_o in_o the_o next_o and_o literal_a sense_n corporal_o so_o it_o do_v denote_v the_o body_n and_o outward_a man_n if_o we_o take_v it_o in_o the_o remote_a and_o qualify_a sense_n spiritual_o so_o it_o do_v denote_v the_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o particular_o the_o conscience_n each_o of_o these_o be_v full_a etc._n etc._n first_o the_o bone_n that_o be_v the_o body_n and_o flesh_n and_o outward_a man_n take_v it_o literal_o there_o be_v many_o which_o in_o old_a age_n feel_v the_o sin_n of_o their_o youth_n in_o their_o bone_n according_a to_o this_o interpretation_n which_o mourn_v at_o last_o when_o their_o flesh_n and_o body_n be_v consume_v prov._n 5.11_o and_o which_o receive_v in_o themselves_o that_o recompense_n of_o their_o error_n which_o be_v meet_v as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v rom._n 1.27_o namely_o in_o regard_n of_o those_o disease_n which_o do_v attend_v their_o vicious_a course_n and_o hasten_v their_o bodily_a destuction_n there_o be_v some_o kind_n of_o sin_n which_o god_n do_v punish_v even_o in_o this_o present_a life_n and_o as_o they_o be_v commit_v with_o the_o body_n so_o be_v they_o avenge_v upon_o the_o body_n which_o be_v make_v the_o subject_a of_o punishment_n as_o it_o have_v be_v before_o of_o miscarriage_n and_o all_o little_a enough_o to_o take_v off_o such_o person_n from_o they_o as_o be_v addict_v and_o give_v up_o unto_o they_o second_o by_o bone_n here_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v not_o only_o the_o flesh_n but_o the_o spirit_n and_o more_o particular_o the_o conscience_n thus_o we_o shall_v find_v the_o phrase_n use_v in_o some_o other_o place_n beside_o of_o scripture_n as_o psal_n 6.2_o have_v mercy_n upon_o i_o o_o lord_n for_o i_o be_o weak_a o_o lord_n heal_v i_o for_o my_o bone_n be_v vex_v so_o psal_n 38.3_o there_o be_v no_o soundness_n in_o my_o flesh_n because_o of_o thy_o anger_n there_o be_v the_o remembrance_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o body_n neither_o it_o there_o any_o rest_n in_o my_o bone_n because_o of_o my_o sin_n there_o be_v the_o remembrance_n of_o sin_n in_o the_o soul_n so_o again_o psal_n 51.8_o make_v i_o to_o hear_v joy_n and_o gladness_n that_o the_o bone_n which_o thou_o have_v break_v may_v rejoice_v the_o broken-bone_n i._n e._n the_o break_a spirit_n and_o that_o end_n in_o the_o undertake_n and_o handle_v of_o it_o in_o the_o time_n of_o youth_n and_o tender_a year_n that_o so_o hereafter_o we_o may_v reap_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o timely_a and_o early_a be_v in_o the_o spirit_n within_o he_o and_o the_o one_o it_o be_v the_o counterpain_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o wax_n answer_v to_o the_o seal_n we_o may_v judge_n of_o the_o delight_n which_o a_o wicked_a person_n have_v in_o sin_n according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o a_o gracious_a person_n delight_v in_o goodness_n what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o those_o which_o be_v godly_a bethink_v themselves_o and_o to_o consider_v of_o their_o former_a miscarrige_n and_o to_o humble_a and_o to_o reform_v themselves_o this_o be_v the_o haste_n and_o cruelty_n of_o adversary_n as_o that_o they_o will_v not_o stay_v so_o much_o as_o for_o this_o we_o see_v here_o what_o cause_n there_o be_v for_o all_o man_n to_o take_v time_n while_o time_n serve_v to_o gather_v themselves_o together_o before_o the_o decree_n go_v forth_o to_o reform_v before_o judgement_n begin_v for_o if_o they_o once_o tarry_v till_o the_o beginning_n of_o it_o it_o will_v proceed_v and_o go_v on_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o eight_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n ver._n 9_o stranger_n have_v devour_v his_o strength_n etc._n etc._n the_o three_o be_v their_o miserable_a captivity_n in_o the_o next_o word_n stranger_n etc._n etc._n this_o i_o must_v not_o divide_v from_o the_o other_o lest_o to_o speak_v in_o the_o language_n of_o the_o text_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o a_o cake_n not_o turn_v especial_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o former_a do_v principal_o set_v forth_o their_o sin_n so_o this_o their_o punishment_n and_o yet_o if_o we_o please_v there_o be_v both_o part_n in_o it_o too_o this_o passage_n as_o well_o as_o the_o former_a carry_v a_o double_a emphasis_n with_o it_o both_o of_o ephraim_n sin_n and_o judgement_n and_o according_o we_o may_v look_v upon_o it_o first_o as_o a_o account_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o thus_o stranger_n have_v devour_v his_o strength_n that_o be_v they_o have_v so_o far_o mingle_v themselves_o with_o the_o abomination_n of_o the_o heath_n as_o that_o they_o have_v now_o lose_v the_o whole_a strength_n and_o marrow_n of_o true_a religion_n they_o have_v no_o spiritual_a life_n or_o vigour_n leave_v in_o they_o evil_a and_o corrupt_a compliance_n it_o eat_v out_o the_o strength_n of_o grace_n and_o make_v it_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o feeble_a than_o ever_o it_o be_v this_o we_o may_v see_v in_o divers_a instance_n in_o scripture_n for_o example_n take_v it_o in_o solomon_n who_o be_v before_o a_o wise_a man_n yet_o be_v seduce_v by_o strange_a wife_n we_o see_v what_o course_n he_o take_v in_o 1_o king_n 11.4_o it_o be_v say_v his_o wife_n turn_v away_o his_o heart_n after_o other_o god_n so_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v not_o perfect_a with_o the_o lord_n his_o god_n etc._n etc._n the_o same_o be_v the_o case_n likewise_o of_o many_o other_o professor_n of_o religion_n who_o though_o in_o time_n past_a they_o have_v be_v pretty_a zealous_a in_o good_a way_n yet_o according_a to_o the_o company_n they_o have_v fall_v into_o the_o society_n which_o they_o have_v join_v themselves_o with_o the_o interest_n and_o alliance_n which_o have_v be_v upon_o they_o have_v exceed_o decline_v and_o decay_v in_o spiritual_a thing_n this_o be_v therefore_o a_o good_a item_n to_o all_o to_o be_v cautelous_a in_o this_o regard_n that_o they_o do_v not_o even_o in_o this_o sense_n give_v their_o strength_n unto_o stranger_n by_o suffer_v any_o to_o cool_v they_o and_o to_o abate_v they_o and_o break_v they_o off_o from_o their_o former_a fervour_n in_o religion_n and_o prosecution_n of_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n very_o odious_a and_o distasteful_a to_o he_o for_o he_o require_v not_o only_o our_o service_n but_o the_o very_a strength_n and_o vigour_n of_o they_o and_o the_o profession_n and_o religion_n among_o they_o which_o they_o think_v to_o be_v their_o great_a strength_n and_o security_n and_o advantage_n and_o the_o supportment_n of_o they_o well_o let_v we_o look_v to_o it_o that_o we_o do_v not_o share_v with_o they_o in_o it_o lest_o in_o so_o do_v we_o provoke_v god_n to_o make_v they_o as_o so_o many_o scourge_n to_o we_o as_o it_o be_v here_o in_o before_o we_o we_o have_v two_o general_n part_v considerable_a of_o we_o first_o the_o sad_a and_o miserable_a condition_n of_o ephraim_n simple_o in_o itself_o second_o the_o aggravation_n of_o it_o be_v here_o and_o there_o upon_o he_o the_o aggravation_n of_o it_o from_o his_o own_o senslesness_n and_o stupidity_n in_o it_o that_o we_o have_v also_o in_o these_o he_o know_v it_o not_o we_o emphasis_n of_o aggravation_n in_o it_o their_o strength_n and_o their_o strength_n devour_v and_o devour_v by_o stranger_n there_o be_v the_o greatness_n of_o the_o good_a they_o be_v deprive_v of_o there_o be_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o deprival_n of_o it_o and_o there_o be_v the_o person_n by_o who_o each_o of_o these_o be_v very_o pertinent_a to_o the_o purpose_n and_o do_v well_o deserve_v our_o handle_n of_o they_o first_o the_o good_a they_o be_v deprive_v of_o that_o be_v here_o express_v to_o be_v their_o strength_n which_o carry_v a_o great_a matter_n in_o it_o and_o do_v imply_v either_o what_o it_o be_v real_o and_o indeed_o or_o else_o what_o it_o be_v according_a to_o their_o apprehension_n and_o estimation_n of_o it_o that_o which_o they_o look_v upon_o as_o their_o strength_n which_o they_o do_v reckon_v and_o value_v themselves_o by_o that_o be_v that_o which_o now_o upon_o their_o rebellion_n and_o trespass_v against_o he_o god_n do_v remove_v and_o take_v away_o from_o they_o he_o deliver_v their_o strength_n into_o captivity_n and_o their_o glory_n into_o the_o enemy_n hand_n as_o we_o find_v that_o expression_n use_v psal_n 78.61_o look_v whatever_o it_o be_v that_o wicked_a man_n make_v to_o be_v their_o reliance_n that_o will_v god_n the_o soon_a scatter_v and_o spoil_v and_o disappoint_v they_o of_o and_o look_v whatever_o it_o be_v which_o may_v be_v most_o advantageous_a to_o they_o that_o will_v he_o soon_o snatch_v away_o from_o they_o it_o be_v not_o any_o thing_n which_o he_o be_v here_o content_v to_o punish_v and_o exercise_v they_o in_o no_o but_o in_o their_o very_a strength_n itself_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v this_o because_o they_o just_a deal_n so_o with_o he_o god_n sit_v the_o punishment_n to_o the_o sin_n in_o this_o dispensation_n for_o we_o must_v still_o remember_v that_o these_o be_v both_o involve_v in_o one_o another_o and_o so_o we_o shall_v still_o handle_v they_o all-along_a in_o the_o prosecution_n of_o this_o scripture_n stranger_n have_v devour_v ephraim_n be_v strength_n as_o to_o matter_n of_o sin_v and_o so_o stranger_n do_v devour_v ephraim_n be_v strength_n as_o to_o matter_n of_o punish_v the_o one_o follow_v upon_o the_o other_o for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o expression_n be_v here_o carry_v in_o a_o a_o single_a person_n though_o indeed_o refer_v to_o a_o whole_a nation_n therefore_o we_o may_v if_o we_o please_v for_o the_o more_o orderly_a proceed_n in_o it_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o in_o both_o notion_n and_o so_o we_o shall_v both_o in_o the_o personal_a notion_n and_o in_o the_o national_a in_o reference_n to_o particular_a person_n as_o it_o be_v a_o censure_n upon_o such_o and_o such_o man_n single_o consider_v and_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o whole_a nation_n as_o it_o be_v a_o censure_n upon_o such_o and_o such_o a_o people_n consider_v at_o large_a first_o of_o all_o take_v it_o in_o the_o personal_a notion_n stranger_n have_v devour_v his_o strength_n and_o so_o it_o be_v more_o particular_o a_o censure_n upon_o such_o kind_n of_o person_n who_o have_v past_o the_o flower_n of_o their_o year_n in_o vanity_n and_o sinfulness_n that_o have_v now_o gray_a hair_n upon_o they_o here_o and_o there_o that_o be_v be_v enter_v into_o the_o list_n of_o old_a age_n and_o when_o they_o do_v reflect_v and_o look_v back_o upon_o their_o former_a time_n they_o find_v it_o to_o be_v spend_v in_o nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n and_o which_o have_v no_o affinity_n with_o he_o stranger_n have_v devour_v his_o strength_n that_o be_v have_v devour_v his_o youth_n the_o first_o pierce_v of_o the_o vessel_n that_o have_v be_v give_v to_o satan_n and_o to_o the_o world_n and_o lust_n if_o god_n will_v have_v any_o thing_n he_o must_v now_o be_v content_a with_o the_o very_a lees_n and_o dregs_o of_o all_o which_o have_v run_v out_o it_o may_v be_v twenty_o thirty_o forty_o year_n in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o think_v all_o this_o while_n of_o conversion_n to_o god_n they_o be_v a_o cake_n as_o yet_o not_o turn_v and_o their_o strength_n it_o have_v be_v devour_v by_o strange_a and_o exorbitant_a course_n this_o be_v a_o sense_n which_o may_v very_o well_o be_v fasten_v upon_o these_o word_n and_o according_o we_o shall_v take_v notice_n of_o they_o namely_o to_o show_v what_o a_o sad_a and_o lamentable_a thing_n it_o be_v for_o man_n to_o spend_v their_o youth_n and_o the_o strength_n and_o prime_n of_o their_o time_n in_o the_o way_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n do_v everywhere_o declaim_v against_o and_o do_v also_o provoke_v to_o the_o contrary_n to_o speak_v distinct_o of_o it_o there_o be_v these_o three_o evil_n in_o it_o first_o it_o be_v very_o disingenuous_a second_o it_o be_v very_o hazardous_a three_o it_o be_v very_o grievous_a and_o uncomfortable_a in_o the_o reflection_n upon_o it_o when_o man_n shall_v call_v themselves_o to_o a_o serious_a reckon_n and_o a_o account_n about_o it_o first_o i_o say_v it_o be_v very_o disingenuous_a when_o man_n shall_v give_v that_o to_o their_o lust_n which_o be_v due_a to_o god_n when_o man_n shall_v bestow_v their_o best_a upon_o vanity_n and_o reserve_v their_o worst_a for_o he_o how_o contrary_a be_v it_o to_o all_o ingenuity_n and_o good_a nature_n certain_o if_o we_o have_v any_o thing_n better_o than_o other_o to_o bestow_v one_o will_v think_v that_o god_n shall_v rather_o have_v that_o from_o we_o than_o any_o thing_n else_o as_o he_o be_v himself_o the_o best_a so_o he_o deserve_v the_o best_a from_o we_o the_o best_a of_o our_o time_n and_o the_o best_a of_o our_o strength_n and_o the_o best_a of_o our_o employment_n now_o to_o deter_v he_o to_o put_v he_o off_o with_o the_o worst_a when_o the_o other_o be_v go_v how_o sordid_a and_o unworthy_a be_v it_o curse_a be_v the_o deceiver_n which_o hathin_o his_o flock_n a_o male_a and_o vow_v and_o sacrifice_v unto_o the_o lord_n a_o corrupt_a thing_n say_v the_o prophet_n malachi_n in_o mal._n 1.14_o this_o be_v the_o case_n and_o condition_n of_o that_o person_n that_o refuse_v to_o give_v god_n his_o example_n be_v but_o very_o rare_a and_o scarce_o of_o this_o kind_n for_o any_o to_o be_v call_v into_o the_o vineyard_n at_o the_o last_o hour_n especial_o which_o have_v be_v call_v before_o and_o have_v refuse_v to_o come_v at_o that_o call_n and_o invitation_n of_o they_o indeed_o some_o person_n as_o have_v heretofore_o in_o the_o day_n of_o their_o youth_n be_v deny_v the_o opportunity_n of_o conversion_n and_o turn_n to_o god_n they_o have_v at_o last_o through_o his_o grace_n and_o goodness_n have_v the_o mean_n afford_v unto_o they_o whereby_o they_o have_v be_v wrought_v upon_o and_o convert_v but_o those_o which_o have_v
it_o also_o here_o with_o peter_n who_o fall_v from_o the_o three_o story_n in_o a_o spiritual_a sense_n by_o his_o threefold_a denial_n his_o spiritual_a life_n be_v still_o abide_v in_o he_o satisfy_v from_o this_o present_a passage_n and_o promise_n before_o we_o where_o it_o be_v signify_v of_o peter_n and_o so_o consequent_o of_o all_o other_o believer_n that_o when_o satan_n shall_v desire_v to_o have_v they_o and_o to_o sift_v they_o their_o faith_n shall_v not_o fail_v this_o point_n be_v not_o to_o be_v improve_v by_o we_o to_o security_n and_o presumption_n of_o spirit_n but_o to_o watchfulness_n and_o use_v of_o the_o mean_n because_o we_o hear_v that_o our_o faith_n shall_v not_o fail_v therefore_o to_o endeavour_v that_o it_o may_v not_o fail_v as_o indeed_o wherever_o god_n intend_v the_o one_o he_o work_v the_o other_o god_n never_o preserve_v any_o christian_n from_o have_v his_o faith_n to_o fail_v in_o he_o but_o he_o do_v withal_o stir_v up_o in_o he_o endeavour_n for_o the_o strengthen_n and_o confirm_v of_o his_o faith_n as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v and_o so_o as_o from_o whence_o he_o may_v assure_v himself_o that_o god_n will_v indeed_o bestow_v it_o upon_o he_o and_o so_o much_o may_v suffice_v to_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o these_o word_n consider_v absolute_o in_o themselves_o and_o as_o signify_v to_o we_o the_o safety_n of_o peter_n condition_n which_o be_v such_o that_o his_o faith_n shall_v not_o fail_v the_o second_o be_v to_o consider_v they_o respective_o and_o in_o their_o dependence_n upon_o the_o word_n before_o and_o so_o as_o signify_v to_o we_o the_o cause_n of_o peter_n safety_n because_o christ_n himself_o pray_v for_o they_o i_o say_v he_o have_v pray_v for_o thou_o that_o thy_o faith_n may_v not_o here_o be_v our_o advantage_n in_o this_o matter_n when_o we_o have_v christ_n himself_o pray_v for_o we_o that_o we_o have_v one_o pray_v for_o we_o who_o be_v sure_a to_o be_v accept_v in_o joh._n condition_n have_v not_o freewill_n not_o understand_v it_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o will_n but_o of_o the_o power_n of_o it_o and_o of_o the_o power_n of_o it_o not_o in_o a_o passive_a sense_n but_o in_o a_o active_a not_o with_o grace_n but_o without_o grace_n and_o grace_v not_o only_o exciting_a and_o move_v and_o assist_v but_o also_o change_v and_o heal_v and_o quicken_a to_o a_o good_a work_n not_o which_o be_v good_a only_o philosophical_o but_o good_a theological_o and_o for_o the_o do_v of_o this_o work_n not_o only_o as_o to_o the_o substance_n of_o the_o action_n but_o also_o as_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o performance_n the_o end_n and_o principle_n and_o all_o requisite_a circumstance_n and_o these_o circumstance_n consider_v not_o only_o according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o morality_n and_o which_o be_v to_o be_v sound_a even_o in_o heathen_a author_n but_o according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n and_o which_o be_v derive_v from_o the_o holy_a scripture_n i_o say_v a_o man_n that_o be_v at_o present_a out_o of_o christ_n and_o so_o still_o continue_v in_o this_o his_o state_n of_o nature_n have_v not_o any_o freedom_n of_o will_n thus_o explain_v remain_v in_o he_o to_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v good_a and_o so_o this_o speech_n of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n true_o fulfil_v without_o i_o you_o can_v do_v nothing_o this_o we_o now_o further_o as_o this_o be_v true_a of_o his_o faith_n at_o large_a and_o consider_v in_o general_a so_o be_v it_o true_a likewise_o of_o his_o faith_n more_o especial_o in_o reference_n to_o temptation_n in_o which_o sense_n we_o be_v now_o more_o particular_o to_o understand_v these_o present_a word_n i_o have_v pray_v for_o thou_o that_o thy_o faith_n fail_v not_o that_o be_v that_o thy_o faith_n fail_v not_o at_o such_o time_n as_o thou_o shall_v fall_v into_o temptation_n and_o when_o satan_n according_a to_o his_o desire_n shall_v set_v upon_o thou_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o particular_a scope_n and_o drift_n of_o the_o text._n and_o so_o again_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v by_o we_o in_o it_o first_o there_o be_v somewhat_o employ_v and_o second_o there_o be_v somewhat_o express_v that_o which_o be_v employ_v be_v this_o that_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n be_v a_o singular_a help_n in_o temptation_n that_o which_o be_v express_v be_v this_o that_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n they_o shall_v have_v their_o faith_n much_o uphold_v in_o such_o condition_n first_o we_o have_v this_o employ_v that_o a_o steadfast_a faith_n be_v a_o singular_a help_n in_o temptation_n this_o we_o draw_v from_o the_o occasion_n of_o these_o word_n which_o be_v here_o add_v by_o our_o saviour_n our_o saviour_n have_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o tell_v peter_n that_o satan_n have_v desire_v to_o have_v he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o they_o to_o sift_v they_o now_o in_o this_o verse_n he_o tell_v he_o thus_o much_o that_o he_o have_v pray_v that_o his_o faith_n shall_v not_o fail_v and_o he_o tell_v it_o he_o by_o way_n of_o encouragement_n now_o where_o do_v the_o encouragement_n lie_v namely_o here_o that_o his_o faith_n not_o fail_v he_o shall_v be_v therefore_o arm_v against_o satan_n assault_n and_o attempt_n upon_o he_o so_o that_o this_o i_o say_v be_v the_o scope_n of_o the_o text_n to_o signify_v to_o we_o the_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n in_o faith_n whereby_o you_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o quench_v all_o the_o fiery_a dart_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o so_o again_o in_o 2_o cor._n 16.13_o watch_v you_o stand_v you_o fast_o in_o the_o faith_n quit_v you_o like_o man_n be_v strong_a where_o it_o be_v suppose_v that_o if_o faith_n be_v but_o sure_a and_o steadfast_a in_o we_o every_o thing_n else_o will_v with_o we_o now_o the_o efficacy_n of_o faith_n in_o temptation_n be_v discernible_a in_o these_o particular_n first_o as_o it_o pitch_v we_o upon_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o god_n that_o which_o keep_v up_o a_o soul_n in_o temptation_n it_o be_v a_o almighty_a power_n it_o be_v a_o power_n which_o be_v above_o all_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n itself_o now_o such_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n alone_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n when_o he_o will_v arm_v we_o against_o principality_n and_o power_n etc._n etc._n he_o bid_v we_o to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o the_o power_n of_o his_o might_n eph._n 6.10_o be_v strong_a etc._n etc._n for_o we_o wrestle_v etc._n etc._n now_o this_o power_n it_o be_v improve_v by_o no_o grace_n so_o much_o as_o by_o faith_n we_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n ready_a to_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o last_o time_n keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n as_o the_o main_a cause_n and_o original_n of_o our_o preservation_n and_o withal_o keep_v through_o faith_n as_o apprehend_v and_o lay_v hold_n on_o this_o power_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o itself_o second_o faith_n help_v in_o temptation_n as_o it_o lay_v hold_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n it_o have_v please_v the_o lord_n to_o make_v many_o gracious_a promise_n to_o his_o servant_n in_o temptation_n for_o the_o sustain_n of_o they_o this_o be_v vigorous_a in_o we_o and_o as_o christ_n here_o himself_o pray_v for_o we_o so_o also_o to_o pray_v for_o ourselves_o that_o this_o may_v not_o fail_v in_o we_o that_o prayer_n of_o the_o disciple_n for_o themselves_o lord_n increase_v our_o faith_n it_o be_v that_o which_o be_v necessary_a for_o every_o christian_a and_o that_o especial_o in_o order_n to_o temptation_n that_o we_o be_v not_o vanquish_v and_o overcome_v by_o that_o and_o further_o here_o be_v that_o which_o may_v satisfy_v we_o in_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n himself_o towards_o we_o we_o may_v think_v it_o a_o strange_a deal_n with_o we_o that_o he_o suffer_v temptation_n sometime_o to_o befall_v we_o yea_o but_o here_o be_v that_o which_o make_v amends_o that_o he_o have_v provide_v also_o such_o a_o
