because_o every_o child_n of_o god_n can_v attain_v to_o abraham_n faith_n and_o to_o a_o full_a persuasion_n and_o therefore_o all_o such_o as_o have_v but_o the_o begin_n of_o faith_n must_v not_o be_v discourage_v for_o thou_o may_v be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n with_o thy_o little_a faith_n if_o thou_o bewail_v it_o and_o be_v diligent_a to_o attain_v to_o strong_a faith_n endless_a &_o unspeakable_a be_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o this_o behalf_n he_o pardon_v manifold_a doubt_n distrust_n and_o unbelief_n to_o they_o that_o bewail_v it_o and_o desire_v to_o increase_v in_o temporal_a blessing_n this_o must_v not_o seem_v strange_a for_o to_o make_v it_o plain_a there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o blessing_n promise_v in_o the_o scripture_n viz._n principal_a and_o less_o principal_a the_o principal_n be_v christ_n god_n and_o man_n the_o redeemer_n of_o mankind_n with_o righteousness_n and_o life_n eternal_a in_o he_o this_o be_v the_o main_a &_o principal_a blessing_n now_o upon_o this_o there_o follow_v blessing_n less_o principal_a which_o be_v also_o promise_v as_o well_o as_o the_o principal_a and_o these_o be_v meat_n drink_n clothing_n health_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o be_v promise_v we_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o they_o be_v for_o our_o good_a in_o christ_n and_o by_o christ_n all_o these_o be_v promise_v to_o this_o purpose_n paul_n say_v all_o the_o premise_n in_o he_o 1._o be_v yea_o and_o amen_n not_o only_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v yea_o and_o amen_o that_o be_v a_o thing_n grant_v and_o accomplish_v but_o all_o other_o temporal_a blessing_n this_o be_v so_o now_o mark_v what_o follow_v when_o true_a faith_n lay_v hold_v on_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a blessing_n then_o withal_o it_o apprehend_v all_o other_o temporal_a blessing_n necessary_a they_o be_v all_o apprehend_v in_o and_o with_o the_o principal_n it_o be_v say_v of_o abraham_n 4._o that_o by_o his_o very_a justify_n faith_n he_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n will_v give_v he_o a_o son_n when_o he_o be_v a_o hundred_o year_n old_a it_o be_v not_o a_o diverse_a faith_n noah_n by_o the_o same_o faith_n 11._o whereby_o he_o be_v save_v believe_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v preserve_v and_o his_o household_n in_o the_o flood_n in_o like_a manner_n by_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n we_o believe_v our_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n in_o christ_n &_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o that_o god_n will_v give_v we_o necessary_n meat_n drink_n cloth_n one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n lay_v hold_v first_o on_o the_o main_a and_o principal_a promise_n and_o then_o on_o the_o less_o principal_a this_o point_n must_v be_v mark_v and_o this_o point_n remember_v first_o mercy_n than_o providence_n first_o the_o principal_a blessing_n and_o then_o the_o temporal_a every_o man_n say_v he_o look_v to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n when_o he_o die_v and_o it_o be_v well_o but_o we_o must_v add_v this_o we_o must_v live_v by_o faith_n too_o we_o must_v lead_v our_o life_n by_o the_o same_o faith_n by_o which_o we_o look_v to_o be_v save_v after_o this_o life_n and_o we_o must_v depend_v on_o god_n providence_n as_o certain_o for_o these_o necessary_n as_o we_o do_v upon_o his_o mercy_n for_o our_o salvation_n we_o must_v not_o live_v by_o sense_n or_o reason_n but_o by_o faith_n how_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v you_o shall_v see_v afterward_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o we_o to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n when_o we_o die_v if_o we_o do_v not_o live_v by_o faith_n he_o that_o can_v cast_v himself_o upon_o god_n providence_n for_o the_o necessary_n of_o this_o life_n can_v much_o less_o cast_v himself_o on_o god_n mercy_n for_o the_o salvation_n of_o his_o soul_n so_o much_o for_o the_o second_o point_n three_o christ_n give_v we_o here_o a_o note_n and_o mark_v whereby_o we_o may_v try_v our_o faith_n whether_o it_o be_v a_o save_a faith_n or_o no_o true_a or_o feign_a great_a or_o little_a for_o he_o give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o the_o more_o man_n be_v distract_v with_o worldly_a care_n the_o less_o be_v their_o faith_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v plain_a the_o more_o man_n care_n be_v the_o less_o their_o trust_n be_v in_o god_n providence_n and_o the_o less_o their_o trust_n be_v in_o god_n providence_n the_o less_o faith_n in_o his_o mercy_n for_o their_o salvation_n so_o that_o where_o worldly_a care_n bear_v rule_v there_o be_v no_o faith_n in_o god_n providence_n as_o long_o as_o man_n be_v in_o prosperity_n they_o think_v they_o have_v great_a faith_n but_o in_o poverty_n and_o affliction_n their_o faith_n be_v try_v for_o then_o common_o the_o hart_n be_v swallow_v up_o with_o grief_n and_o fear_n he_o that_o can_v rest_v on_o god_n providence_n for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n how_o shall_v he_o rest_v on_o god_n mercy_n in_o the_o pain_n of_o death_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o reproof_n 31._o therefore_o take_v no_o thought_n say_v what_o shall_v we_o eat_v or_o what_o shall_v we_o drink_v or_o wherewith_o shall_v we_o be_v clothe_v these_o word_n be_v a_o repetition_n of_o the_o commandment_n deliver_v in_o the_o 25._o verse_n and_o here_o the_o commandment_n now_o to_o the_o word_n therefore_o take_v no_o thought_n etc._n etc._n these_o word_n tend_v to_o this_o end_n not_o to_o breed_v idleness_n or_o carelessness_n in_o any_o but_o as_o i_o declare_v in_o the_o 25._o verse_n therefore_o i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o far_o forth_o we_o may_v care_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n and_o where_o it_o must_v end_v first_o it_o it_o grow_v from_o stature_n to_o stature_n and_o so_o this_o be_v a_o reason_n from_o the_o like_a as_o man_n by_o take_v care_n can_v increase_v his_o stature_n one_o cubit_n no_o nor_o any_o thing_n at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v in_o luke_n so_o he_o can_v by_o take_v care_n increase_v his_o worldly_a state_n or_o better_o it_o this_o be_v the_o sum_n and_o substance_n of_o this_o reason_n and_o it_o be_v very_o forcible_a and_o effectual_a to_o make_v we_o use_v moderate_a care_n and_o to_o move_v we_o to_o put_v away_o distrustful_a care_n so_o much_o as_o for_o necessary_n for_o we_o can_v no_o more_o increase_v our_o maintenance_n by_o take_v care_n than_o we_o can_v increase_v our_o stature_n by_o it_o which_o be_v impossible_a to_o any_o creature_n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o verse_n now_o let_v we_o see_v what_o doctrine_n and_o instruction_n arise_v from_o the_o word_n all_o our_o labour_n care_n and_o industry_n be_v altogether_o vain_a &_o unprofitable_a consider_v a_o part_n from_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o his_o providence_n ps._n 127._o all_o the_o pain_n that_o man_n take_v for_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n be_v but_o lose_a labour_n without_o god_n blessing_n the_o plant_a and_o waterer_n be_v nothing_o 3._o if_o such_o excellent_a man_n as_o they_o be_v that_o be_v the_o founder_n of_o the_o church_n labour_v in_o vain_a without_o god_n blessing_n much_o more_o we_o this_o be_v the_o first_o point_n which_o teach_v we_o one_o special_a duty_n always_o to_o commend_v our_o labour_n to_o god_n by_o prayer_n to_o offer_v they_o up_o to_o he_o that_o he_o may_v bless_v they_o because_o without_o this_o all_o our_o care_n and_o labour_n be_v in_o vain_a second_o as_o god_n by_o his_o decree_n &_o counsel_n set_v down_o what_o shall_v be_v every_o man_n stature_n so_o he_o have_v set_v down_o in_o his_o decree_n what_o shall_v be_v every_o man_n success_n and_o worldly_a state_n good_a or_o bad_a better_a or_o worse_o god_n have_v decree_v it_o &_o set_v it_o down_o and_o it_o be_v unchaungeable_a as_o a_o man_n stature_n be_v when_o he_o be_v come_v to_o his_o full_a height_n this_o conclusion_n christ_n will_v teach_v we_o here_o we_o can_v make_v our_o worldly_a state_n better_o or_o worse_o as_o we_o will_v we_o can_v be_v high_a or_o low_o at_o our_o pleasure_n but_o we_o must_v have_v that_o stature_n and_o state_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v look_v what_o success_n he_o have_v appoint_v shall_v be_v and_o must_v be_v we_o can_v alter_v it_o by_o cark_n and_o care_v this_o serve_v to_o teach_v we_o to_o depend_v upon_o god_n and_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o in_o our_o lawful_a labour_n for_o the_o success_n of_o they_o this_o overthrow_v diverse_a fond_a opinion_n first_o that_o by_o art_n and_o skill_n a_o man_n may_v prolong_v his_o natural_a life_n and_o make_v a_o supply_n when_o he_o be_v come_v to_o his_o end_n this_o be_v false_a for_o if_o a_o man_n can_v make_v himself_o high_a nor_o alter_v his_o stature_n he_o can_v enlarge_v his_o life_n for_o of_o the_o two_o that_o be_v the_o easy_a viz._n to_o increase_v his_o stature_n rather_o than_o to_o lengthen_v his_o life_n beyond_o the_o natural_a period_n therefore_o man_n can_v do_v this_o by_o all_o his_o art_n or_o wit_n he_o can_v piece_n out_o his_o life_n and_o refrain_v his_o spirit_n as_o ecclesiastes_n speak_v the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n must_v be_v separate_v indeed_o art_n may_v preserve_v life_n till_o his_o natural_a end_n but_o when_o that_o be_v come_v no_o art_n can_v prolong_v it_o second_o the_o opinion_n that_o witch_n and_o sorcerer_n can_v transform_v themselves_o and_o pass_v through_o keye-hole_n be_v false_a if_o they_o can_v do_v this_o viz._n add_v one_o cubit_n to_o their_o stature_n much_o less_o can_v they_o do_v that_o if_o they_o can_v add_v so_o much_o to_o their_o stature_n how_o can_v they_o change_v and_o abolish_v nature_n if_o they_o can_v increase_v nature_n they_o can_v change_v it_o into_o a_o other_o kind_n though_o satan_n have_v many_o illusion_n yet_o he_o can_v by_o all_o his_o skill_n turn_v a_o man_n body_n into_o a_o beast_n and_o it_o be_v a_o forgery_n to_o say_v that_o nabuchadnezzers_n body_n be_v change_v into_o a_o beast_n but_o only_o he_o have_v a_o frenzy_n and_o become_v like_o a_o beast_n three_o they_o be_v deceive_v and_o deceive_v that_o say_v they_o can_v by_o art_n turn_v base_a metal_n into_o better_a as_o brass_n into_o gold_n a_o creature_n of_o one_o kind_n into_o a_o other_o if_o this_o be_v not_o possible_a viz._n to_o add_v one_o cubit_n &c_n &c_n no_o more_o be_v that_o likewise_o we_o must_v remember_v that_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o creator_n and_o a_o man_n can_v no_o more_o do_v they_o than_o he_o can_v increase_v his_o own_o stature_n which_o he_o can_v never_o do_v if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o we_o can_v add_v etc._n etc._n then_o it_o be_v false_a which_o the_o papist_n teach_v that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v glorify_v and_o justify_v and_o increase_v his_o glory_n in_o heaven_n by_o his_o work_n he_o can_v do_v it_o for_o it_o require_v a_o great_a power_n to_o increase_v glory_n in_o heaven_n then_o to_o increase_v the_o stature_n of_o the_o body_n as_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o god_n to_o give_v stature_n and_o to_o increase_v it_o so_o it_o be_v his_o work_n to_o give_v glory_n and_o to_o increase_v it_o and_o if_o man_n can_v do_v that_o which_o be_v less_o in_o nature_n how_o shall_v they_o do_v that_o which_o be_v above_o nature_n 28_o and_o why_o care_v you_o for_o raiment_n learn_v how_o the_o lily_n of_o the_o field_n do_v grow_v they_o be_v not_o weary_v neither_o spin_v the_o meaning_n be_v and_o do_v not_o care_n for_o raiment_n the_o interrogation_n still_o have_v the_o force_n of_o a_o negation_n or_o prohibition_n and_o here_o he_o repeat_v the_o commandment_n before_o deliver_v in_o the_o 25._o verse_n yet_o not_o altogether_o but_o by_o piecemeal_o he_o part_v it_o and_o prove_v it_o and_o urge_v it_o point_n by_o point_n what_o shall_v be_v his_o meaning_n to_o take_v this_o course_n in_o handle_v this_o heavenly_a doctrine_n he_o show_v himself_o here_o to_o be_v the_o doctor_n of_o the_o church_n and_o prove_v himself_o a_o faithful_a teacher_n therefore_o not_o content_a only_o to_o propound_v his_o doctrine_n lest_o it_o shall_v take_v no_o fruit_n or_o profit_n in_o the_o hearer_n he_o urge_v it_o point_n by_o point_n that_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v set_v a_o edge_n to_o teach_v other_o whether_o they_o be_v minister_n master_n or_o father_n every_o teacher_n have_v his_o duty_n enjoin_v he_o first_o to_o teach_v the_o will_n of_o god_n second_o to_o set_v it_o on_o a_o edge_n so_o here_o christ_n give_v example_n and_o teach_v by_o his_o own_o practice_n first_o he_o command_v than_o he_o confirm_v and_o urge_v it_o by_o piecemeal_o and_o then_o he_o repeat_v the_o commandment_n diverse_a time_n so_o much_o for_o the_o manner_n and_o form_n of_o teach_v now_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o word_n as_o they_o lie_v in_o order_n and_o why_o care_v you_o for_o raiment_n etc._n etc._n these_o word_n must_v have_v the_o same_o exposition_n that_o the_o 25._o verse_n
permit_v the_o fall_n but_o now_o the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v without_o repentance_n and_o the_o man_n that_o be_v a_o believer_n shall_v never_o be_v move_v psal._n 15._o though_o the_o nature_n of_o grace_n be_v such_o that_o it_o may_v be_v lose_v yet_o god_n give_v the_o second_o grace_n to_o the_o first_o and_o thereby_o it_o be_v make_v sure_a that_o it_o shall_v not_o and_o it_o be_v thus_o why_o may_v we_o not_o love_n and_o serve_v god_n and_o serve_v mammon_n too_o some_o man_n flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v serve_v god_n &_o yet_o set_v their_o heart_n to_o seek_v riches_n too_o and_o therefore_o they_o think_v that_o they_o may_v seek_v earthly_a riches_n &_o heavenly_a riches_n both_o together_o and_o that_o one_o do_v not_o hinder_v a_o other_o but_o that_o one_o may_v have_v both_o treasure_n in_o earth_n and_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n here_o therefore_o christ_n meet_v with_o this_o carnal_a conceit_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o prove_v it_o to_o be_v impossible_a that_o one_o man_n shall_v practice_v both_o these_o thus_o you_o see_v how_o this_o verse_n do_v depend_v on_o the_o former_a and_o this_o will_v the_o better_o appear_v if_o we_o seek_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n etc._n etc._n it_o may_v seem_v at_o the_o first_o to_o be_v otherwise_o for_o both_o in_o reason_n and_o also_o by_o experience_n one_o servant_n may_v serve_v two_o diverse_a master_n as_o we_o see_v one_o factor_n may_v and_o do_v well_o serve_v diveser_fw-ge merchant_n therefore_o how_o can_v this_o be_v that_o christ_n say_v here_o some_o answer_n it_o thus_o that_o the_o word_n must_v be_v conceive_v after_o this_o manner_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v two_o diverse_a or_o contrary_a master_n as_o for_o example_n when_o one_o shall_v say_v come_v and_o a_o other_o shall_v say_v come_v not_o when_o two_o master_n be_v thus_o contrary_a &_o diverse_a in_o their_o mind_n and_o will_n one_o servant_n can_v serve_v both_o and_o so_o these_o word_n carry_v a_o holy_a truth_n but_o this_o clause_n of_o diverse_a and_o contrary_a be_v not_o express_v therefore_o i_o say_v further_o that_o this_o sentence_n be_v a_o common_a proverb_n among_o they_o now_o in_o a_o proverb_n if_o it_o be_v usual_o or_o general_o true_a though_o it_o hold_v not_o always_o if_o it_o have_v effect_v ordinary_o it_o be_v enough_o as_o no_o prophet_n be_v honour_v in_o his_o own_o country_n that_o be_v usual_o and_o common_o it_o be_v so_o so_o this_o proverb_n be_v true_a ordinary_o and_o thus_o this_o sentence_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o a_o familiar_a proverb_n usual_a and_o common_a among_o the_o jew_n which_o christ_n take_v for_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o speech_n now_o it_o follow_v for_o either_o he_o shall_v hate_v the_o one_o that_o be_v as_o he_o be_v a_o master_n or_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o shall_v love_v the_o other_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o commandment_n in_o that_o he_o do_v embrace_v it_o and_o perform_v it_o or_o else_o he_o shall_v lean_v to_o the_o one_o this_n be_v a_o illustration_n of_o the_o former_a word_n for_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v how_o shall_v he_o be_v know_v to_o love_n or_o hate_v they_o the_o answer_n be_v thus_o love_n will_v cleave_v to_o the_o one_o and_o contemn_v the_o other_o that_o be_v a_o servant_n be_v know_v to_o love_v his_o master_n in_o his_o commandment_n first_o if_o he_o cleave_v unto_o he_o second_o if_o he_o give_v himself_o as_o a_o servant_n to_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o commandment_n and_o he_o will_v despise_v the_o other_o that_o be_v he_o will_v neglect_v his_o commandment_n thus_o he_o testify_v his_o love_n or_o hatred_n by_o omit_v and_o neglect_v or_o by_o perform_v and_o practise_v the_o commandment_n enjoin_v he_o now_o the_o word_n that_o follow_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o mammon_n be_v the_o application_n of_o the_o argument_n you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o riches_n treasure_n profit_n gain_n a_o man_n can_v serve_v god_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o get_v and_o lay_v up_o riches_n it_o be_v not_o say_v you_o can_v serve_v god_n and_o have_v riches_n for_o abraham_n joseph_n &_o job_n serve_v god_n and_o yet_o have_v riches_n but_o thus_o you_o can_v serve_v god_n &_o serve_v riches_n that_o be_v give_v yourselves_o to_o seek_v they_o and_o set_v your_o heart_n upon_o they_o thus_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n be_v plain_a and_o now_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o word_n will_v the_o better_o appear_v the_o objection_n be_v this_o why_o may_v we_o not_o do_v both_o viz._n lay_v up_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n and_o in_o earth_n the_o answer_n be_v no_o man_n can_v serve_v two_o master_n but_o god_n and_o mammon_n be_v two_o master_n therefore_o you_o can_v serve_v both_o these_o the_o proposition_n be_v confirm_v by_o a_o reason_n which_o be_v add_v and_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o scope_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o verse_n now_o see_v what_o doctrine_n natural_o arise_v hence_o first_o it_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v that_o christ_n do_v here_o set_v down_o what_o it_o be_v to_o serve_v god_n a_o thing_n that_o every_o man_n speak_v much_o of_o yet_o a_o thing_n that_o few_o know_v and_o few_o do_v practice_v therefore_o in_o a_o word_n it_o be_v this_o to_o serve_v god_n be_v to_o love_v he_o and_o to_o cleave_v unto_o he_o and_o he_o serve_v god_n that_o do_v these_o two_o for_o the_o first_o every_o man_n will_v say_v that_o he_o
