repentance_n towards_o or_o unto_o god_n act._n 20.21_o the_o former_a be_v signify_v by_o the_o same_o apostle_n he._n 6.1_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n that_o be_v from_o sinful_a work_n to_o be_v do_v hereafter_o and_o therefore_o also_o such_o confession_n of_o sin_n as_o proceed_v from_o a_o godly_a sorrow_n do_v necessary_o imply_v a_o conversion_n or_o change_n of_o the_o will_n which_o if_o it_o be_v so_o radicate_v and_o fix_v as_o will_v prove_v effectual_a upon_o the_o trial_n which_o god_n only_o know_v be_v nothing_o less_o than_o a_o true_a repentance_n begin_v in_o original_a law_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o a_o precept_n only_o but_o a_o privilege_n peculiar_a to_o the_o gospel_n be_v a_o gracious_a dispensation_n and_o mitigation_n of_o the_o rigour_n be_v constancy_n express_v in_o three_o word_n steadfast_a unmoveable_a always_o the_o second_o be_v diligence_n and_o zeal_n signify_v by_o the_o word_n abound_v first_o to_o be_v steadfast_a and_o unmoveable_a be_v to_o stand_v fast_o in_o the_o faith_n and_o to_o be_v constant_a in_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n and_o so_o much_o be_v imply_v in_o the_o word_n work_v out_o your_o own_o salvation_n which_o as_o before_o be_v observe_v suppose_v the_o work_n already_o begin_v and_o yet_o remain_v to_o be_v perfect_v by_o a_o continue_a perseverance_n whereunto_o only_o the_o promise_n of_o salvation_n be_v make_v he_o that_o endure_v to_o the_o end_n shall_v be_v save_v mat._n 10.22_o and_o when_o the_o apostle_n say_v god_n will_v render_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o without_o doubt_n the_o safe_a course_n to_o secure_v the_o title_n itself_o which_o a_o few_o good_a work_n with_o the_o neglect_n of_o other_o will_v not_o do_v if_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o you_o and_o abound_v say_v s._n peter_n they_o make_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v neither_o be_v barren_a nor_o unfruitful_a a_o field_n or_o tree_n be_v judge_v barren_a and_o unfruitful_a though_o it_o do_v bear_v some_o fruit_n as_o suppose_v there_o and_o there_o a_o ear_n of_o corn_n or_o a_o apple_n if_o there_o be_v no_o proportion_n between_o the_o ground_n or_o the_o tree_n with_o the_o respective_a cost_n bestow_v upon_o they_o and_o the_o crop_n that_o they_o yield_v so_o certain_o will_v man_n be_v judge_v by_o the_o proportion_n of_o the_o ablity_n that_o god_n afford_v they_o to_o their_o good_a work_n else_o almost_o every_o man_n will_v be_v save_v because_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o man_n so_o bad_a but_o he_o do_v or_o have_v do_v some_o good_a work_n at_o least_o material_o good_a thus_o i_o have_v show_v at_o large_a from_o holy_a scripture_n only_o what_o that_o work_n be_v by_o which_o our_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v wrought_v out_o and_o shall_v finish_v my_o answer_n to_o that_o question_n with_o the_o addition_n of_o one_o advertisement_n more_o which_o be_v that_o none_o of_o this_o work_n can_v be_v do_v without_o the_o assistance_n of_o divine_a grace_n as_o we_o be_v teach_v by_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v my_o text_n for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n of_o which_o something_o more_o afterward_o at_o present_a i_o only_o observe_v this_o consequence_n from_o they_o agreeable_a to_o the_o question_n in_o hand_n viz._n that_o see_v there_o be_v such_o a_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o work_n it_o follow_v that_o whatsoever_o be_v necessary_a to_o obtain_v this_o grace_n must_v be_v equal_o necessary_a to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n see_v therefore_o that_o prayer_n hear_v reud_a and_o meditate_v on_o god_n word_n and_o the_o frequent_a participation_n of_o the_o holy_a eucharist_n or_o supper_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n institute_v by_o god_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o his_o grace_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o a_o christian_n shall_v diligent_o apply_v himself_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o these_o duty_n not_o only_o as_o good_a work_n but_o as_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n to_o enable_v he_o to_o do_v what_o ever_o else_o be_v require_v of_o he_o to_o work_v out_o his_o salvation_n but_o of_o these_o thing_n more_o hereafter_o in_o the_o application_n come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o three_o question_n viz._n what_o be_v mean_v by_o those_o word_n with_o manner_n of_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n and_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v imagine_v that_o there_o be_v any_o material_a difference_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o these_o two_o word_n though_o the_o latter_a of_o they_o do_v proper_o signify_v the_o effect_n the_o former_a chryst_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chryst_n for_o tremble_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o fear_n but_o here_o they_o be_v no_o other_o than_o synonymous_n expression_n the_o general_a use_n whereof_o be_v only_o to_o fortify_v and_o urge_v the_o same_o sense_n the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n will_v best_o be_v understand_v partly_o from_o the_o opposite_n of_o such_o a_o disposition_n as_o be_v thereby_o signify_v and_o partly_o from_o the_o use_n of_o the_o same_o word_n in_o other_o text_n of_o scripture_n now_o the_o direct_a opposite_n of_o fear_n and_o tremble_a be_v presumption_n and_o selfconfidence_n or_o vain_a confidence_n together_o with_o joc._n with_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chrysost_o in_o joc._n negligence_n and_o spiritual_a sloth_n fear_v and_o tremble_v be_v first_o oppose_v to_o presumption_n and_o selfconfidence_n and_o so_o signisy_n humility_n modesty_n and_o reverence_n from_o a_o humble_a sense_n of_o our_o own_o weakness_n aptness_n to_o neglect_n and_o inability_n to_o perform_v this_o work_n without_o the_o special_a assistance_n of_o divine_a grace_n withdraw_v it_o from_o we_o by_o our_o unprofitableness_n and_o so_o be_v leave_v to_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v neither_o be_v able_a to_o will_v nor_o to_o do_v it_o concern_v we_o to_o beware_v that_o we_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o resist_v he_o that_o we_o be_v always_o fearful_a of_o ourselves_o and_o careful_a not_o to_o neglect_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o he_o give_v free_o of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n have_v not_o bind_v himself_o to_o bestow_v it_o upon_o every_o one_o much_o less_o to_o continue_v it_o whether_o he_o will_v make_v use_n of_o it_o or_o no._n so_o these_o word_n do_v afford_v a_o just_a and_o weighty_a reason_n why_o we_o shall_v work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a because_o it_o be_v god_n work_n not_o only_o as_o command_v by_o he_o which_o be_v one_o reasonable_a consideration_n to_o move_v we_o to_o a_o reverend_a diligence_n in_o the_o performance_n but_o also_o as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v effect_v by_o his_o special_a grace_n without_o which_o it_o can_v never_o be_v do_v but_o i_o shall_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o the_o same_o word_n may_v have_v another_o sense_n which_o i_o find_v give_v by_o the_o greek_a chrysost_o s._n chrysost_o father_n and_o more_o general_o receive_v by_o modern_a interpreter_n viz._n as_o afford_v a_o argument_n of_o encouragement_n to_o the_o forementioned_a duty_n from_o a_o assurance_n of_o god_n effectual_a assistance_n that_o shall_v never_o be_v want_v to_o they_o that_o go_v about_o it_o with_o such_o humility_n and_o diligence_n as_o be_v signify_v by_o that_o fear_n and_o tremble_a for_o so_o may_v we_o be_v confident_a of_o this_o very_a thing_n that_o he_o that_o have_v begin_v a_o good_a work_n in_o we_o will_v perform_v it_o unto_o the_o and_o be_v no_o less_o please_v to_o he_o than_o advantageous_a to_o ourselves_o thus_o it_o appear_v that_o this_o receive_a sense_n of_o the_o word_n be_v not_o at_o all_o exclusive_a of_o that_o which_o be_v before_o mention_v but_o additional_a and_o agreeable_a to_o it_o thus_o much_o shall_v suffice_v for_o the_o explication_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o confirmation_n of_o the_o general_a doctrine_n that_o which_o remain_v be_v matter_n of_o application_n wherein_o we_o must_v have_v leave_n to_o speak_v plain_o and_o free_o in_o the_o just_a reprehension_n of_o divers_a sort_n of_o people_n for_o the_o notorious_a contempt_n or_o neglect_v of_o this_o so_o necessary_a a_o duty_n both_o in_o the_o matter_n and_o manner_n of_o it_o 1._o and_o first_o what_o shall_v we_o say_v to_o such_o person_n as_o act_v direct_o contrary_a to_o the_o matter_n of_o this_o precept_n be_v so_o far_o from_o work_v out_o their_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o there_o among_o they_o to_o who_o the_o gospel_n of_o salvation_n be_v preach_v and_o that_o do_v not_o pretend_v to_o any_o doubt_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o who_o notwithstanding_o do_v not_o only_o
